ANALYSIS ON CLARITY AND CORRECTNESS OF GOOGLE TRANSLATE IN TRANSLATING AN INDONESIAN ARTICLE INTO ENGLISH

The objective of this study is to analyze the aspects of clarity and correctness in Google Translate’s ability in translating an Indonesian article from English into Indonesian. This research refers to qualitative research. Data used in this research is a published Indonesian article which is translated into English by using Google Translate. Based on the analysis, the researcher concludes that Google Translate is a machine translator, but there is always going to be potentially less clarity and correctness at the end of the translation product such as in Indonesian articles into English. Because English grammar is a complicated thing to be learned, people perhaps cannot expect more that machine translator understands every aspect of the way human beings communicate with each other. That is why the answer about the clarity and the correctness of Google Translate is that it still has a way to go before it can consistently, clearly, and correctly translate the language without errors. In the clarity aspect, there is still no clarity in English translation by Google Translate, even it translated the language word-for-word. In the correctness aspect, it refers to the mechanical rule in writing which is related to grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Some examples of non-correctness are related to grammar and punctuation errors. Machine translators have come a long way in a short amount of time, but some features still lack good translation such as in aspects of grammar and punctuation.

Google Translate is a free and practical online translation service that allows millions of people around the globe to translate words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs into an intended target language. However, in 2015, some Google Translate users in Indonesia, filed complaints, asserting that the machine was often inaccurate, speculating that it could only translate languages at the micro-level of words and phrases, rather than complete sentences or paragraphs. This research works to examine the accuracy as well as the shortcomings of Google Translate, in the context of English to Indonesian translations, in order to critically engage the complaints made by Google users. For the purpose of this study, 80 English sentences were translated using Google Translate and assessed for accuracy using a table adapted from Memsource criteria. Both the original sentences and their translated versions were analyzed using a sentence pair matrix to determine the machine’s failings and areas fo...

This study is intended to analyze errors made by Google Translate in translating Eliza Riley’s Return to Paradise short story. The method is qualitative descriptive. The data are collected by comparing the translation of Google Translate with that of a professional translator. The errors are analyzed based on Mossop’s revision parameters. The findings show that Google Translate failed to recognize idiomatic expressions which caused fatal errors in the target text; errors in word choice that caused word translated out of context; and illogical sentence at the target text caused by cultural difference. As a conclusion, Google Translate may be useful to help translate few words, phrase, and particular sentence in general, and also gives a general comprehension in translating text. However, it may not give an adequate result as a fine translation product. Keyword: google translate, error analysis, Mossop’s revision parameters

Since the advent of the 21st century, there have been a lot of developments and new technologies have been introduced which have made life more convenient and simple. Although not appropriate for all situations, machine translation (MT) is now being used by many translators to ease their work. Many others use MT to get a quick grasp of foreign text that they would not understand. The quality of Google Translate depends on the number of human translated texts searched by Google Translate. Therefore, the quality of the translation has been considered far from perfection. Thus in order to evaluate the quality of machine translation, error analysis has been suggested to be conducted. This paper presents the results of a research study focusing on the types of Google translation errors found in the English translation of procedural text. The purposes of this paper are (i) the results of English-Indonesian machine translation, categorizing errors in machine translation into 3 types: semantic errors, syntax errors and morphology errors, and (ii) to describe the dominant kind of translation error produced by Google Translate. This study revealed that The most frequently occurring errors were form category of sematic (i.e., 44 errors out of 97 or 45.36%). Syntax errors ranked second (i.e. 34 errors out of 97 or 35.05%) and morphology errors ranked third (i.e., 19 errors out of 97 or 19.59%).

Translation Studies Research Development in Indonesia

thesis translate in indonesia

This paper is an overview on the development of Translation Studies (TS) research in Indonesia from 2008 to 2018. The study aims to discover whether the TS research conducted by the students of ten Indonesian universities has followed the present trends of TS research in the world. The data were obtained from the final papers (undergraduate theses, Master’s degree theses, and doctoral theses) of the universities having translation programs in Indonesia, particularly on Java and Bali Islands. The titles of the final papers were analyzed to obtain a general idea of what topics of TS research are usually investigated by Indonesian university students. The results show that most of the topics are categorized into text analysis and translation (product-oriented research), and very few belong to the process-oriented research, participant-oriented research, and other themes. This leads to the conclusion that TS research in Indonesia has not yet developed well and has not varied according to the international TS research progress.

STUDENTS’ STRATEGIES IN TRANSLATING AN ENGLISH TEXT INTO BAHASA INDONESIA : A case study at the English Education Department of FPBS UPI Bandung

This case study investigated translators’ translation strategies or procedures, problems and solutions in translating an English text into bahasa Indonesia. The study involved six English students of the seventh semester at English program FPBS of UPI. A qualitative approach, particularly descriptive study, was employed in this study, with two data collection techniques: documentation and interview. The analysis of students’ strategies in translation used the theory from Vinay and Darbelnet (in Munday, 2001; in Venuti, 2004) and Newmark (1988). This analysis mainly focused to answer the research question about the procedures applied by the students in their translations. Meanwhile, the data from interviews were analyzed to discuss the problems encountered by the students in translating the task and also the solutions they used in handling the problems. The study revealed that the students employed sevenne procedures of translation from Vinay and Darlbelnet (1965) and Newmark (1988) to translate the units of the text, that are Shift or Transposition (20.6%), Couplet (18.83%), Literal translation (15%), Borrowing or Transference (12.5%), Reduction (12%), Expansion (10.16%), Paraphrase (6%), Naturalization (3.83%), and Modulation (0.16%). There were similar units translated with the same strategies, and some were translated with different strategies. It was also found that the students encountered difficulties in lexical aspect in doing translation. The difficulties were caused by the limitation of students’ competences. Besides the different strategies applied for the same units of text, the students also had different ways to solve the same problems they deal with in their translation activity.
