When we achieve, we usually do so because others have helped. Your speech of appreciation is the gift or acknowledgment you give in return for what was given you.

When is a thank you speech appropriate?

Any time is good to say thank you! However, a more formal speech of thanks could fit any of these occasions.

Generally the decision to leap to your feet and give a thank you speech is not spontaneous. You will likely have some forewarning and time to consider exactly what you want to say and who you want to mention.

Deciding on the content

Cover these three content areas and you'll be fine.

  • WHO are you thanking? Note their names in ranking order- the most important first.
  • WHAT are you thanking them for? Be specific rather than general. Naming what you are grateful for gives your thanks more meaning.
  • WHAT did their gift of time, expertise, encouragement, money... mean to you? Again, be specific. This is your chance to publicly give credit where it's due, to compliment, to praise. Take it.

Writing your speech

When you've sorted out who you wish to mention and what for, you are ready to begin writing.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

1. Introduction/opening

In your introduction or opening give the reason for the occasion and why it is you're going to thank everyone. What you say, and how you say it, will set the tone for the remainder of the speech.

Depending on the number of people on your 'thank you/appreciation' list and the amount of time you have, consider including a small story about the lead-up making this event possible. A well-chosen personal anecdote will always go down well because it lets those listening share your experience more deeply.

In the body of your speech, start at the top of your list of people to thank and work your way through it. Take care to give the most important people the most time.

For those whom you want to mention but don't have enough time to make individual acknowledgments consider grouping them according to function.

The person giving this speech is thanking an organization for giving him an award.

Tips to help you get your thank you speech right

Many people make the assumption that once they've got the words of their speech sorted, they're set to go.

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

Giving yourself several  rehearsals, firstly by yourself and then in front of  friends or family, will help enormously. Click the link for detailed information about  how to rehearse effectively .

For the condensed and shortened version covering good rehearsal practice follow the points below.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues.  It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

  • to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
  • for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again. 

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few  more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone.  If it's too short, add more detail.  Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

Write the main points of your thank you speech on cue cards. Good notes will keep you on track while ensuring you cover everything you want to like, for instance, the name of every person you want to thank and why.

Additionally, you also need to anticipate what sort of questions the audience will ask of you. This will ensure you are not caught off guard at the moment. Finally, don’t forget to take pauses after each question. Make sure you comprehend the question and express gratitude to the person who asked it.

These phrases work well in thank-you emails:

It's hard to find the perfect words to express your gratitude in a thank you email. The right approach, however, can make your thank you email sincere and meaningful.

Professional thank you emails are the most sincere form of expressing gratitude. They’re also a great way to rekindle conversations/start a long-term professional relationships with people, especially online. Before writing your thank you email, it helps to know the reason for the email (feedback, consultation, providing work), the result you are after (jobs, growth, referrals), and the next steps that you expect the recipient to do.

There are multiple situations wherein you would send this email: After getting helpful tech support, after a meaningful event or workshop, after getting a favor from a colleague, recieving guidance from a mentor, after a purchase or after getting feedback. Here is the format:

Subject: Thank You for Your Support Dear [Recipient's Name], I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the support you've provided. Your assistance has been invaluable to me during this time. Your expertise and timely responses have greatly contributed to the progress and success of our project. It's a pleasure working with someone so dedicated and knowledgeable. Thank you once again for your unwavering support. I look forward to our continued collaboration.

Time is a luxury. If someone reserves that time to meet you or converse with you—show them you respect them and want to continue these meetups. 

For showing up in a physical meeting

The key in this email is to not sound too pushy by sending a lengthy essay. Show them you paid attention by outlining the important points.

Writing a thank you speech can be intimidating. It is challenging to remember all of the people who have helped you along the way. If you recently reached a personal, spiritual or career milestone, you may be wondering how to compose a ‘thank you’ speech. A ‘thank you’ speech needs to identify all of the people you are thankful for, as well as the specific things you are thankful for and their personal or professional meaning to you. While ‘thank you’ speeches are relatively straightforward, they can be tricky to write, especially if the list of people to thank is very large or very small.

Prioritizing Your Thank You List

Step 1 Make sure you have a complete list.

  • Who helped you become the person you are today?
  • Who offered you the most encouragement?
  • What specific contributions are you thanking people for?
  • Who gave you the time of day when you really needed help?
  • Who offered valuable expertise at crucial moments?

Step 2 Start ordering your list.

  • For instance, under the category expertise, you could rank individuals from most to least important contributions of expertise to the project or award you are giving the speech for.

Step 3 Determine the top ranked people.

  • For instance, a ‘thank you’ speech at a wedding should be no longer than three minutes long.

Composing Your Speech

Step 1 Outline the structure of your speech.

  • In 1985, Sally Field spoke from the heart in her Oscar thank you speech. She said, “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now you like me!”
  • In 1970, at the age of 61, John Wayne was genuine about how long it took him to win, upon accepting the award for best actor for the role of one-eyed Rooster Cogburn. He said, “Wow! If I’d known that, I would have put the patch on 35 years ago.”

Step 4 Express humility.

  • For instance, you could say: “I am so humbled by this honor.”
  • You could also use humor. For instance, when George Clooney won best supporting actor in 2006 but lost the best director award, he drew on his self-deprecating humor. He said, “Well, it looks like I’m not winning best director…”

Step 5 Avoid verbosity.

  • If it is a short ‘thank you’ speech, it is often best to skip the intro entirely. The audience will know why you are giving the speech, so follow the example of Abraham Lincoln who always skipped the introduction.

Step 7 Write about the most important people on your list.

  • Once you have written about the most important individuals, you can always edit the speech later for concision.
  • Budget your time for each person. Remember that if you spend too much time on any one person, you may not be able to get to others who still really need to be thanked.
  • If your speech needs to be really short, you could say: "I would like to thank Charley, my wonderful husband for supporting me through the long nights. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to my beautiful daughters, Kiera and Emily. Mommy can play more now. To Jeff Goldstein of Caracas, for feeding my crew; to Jake, Mindy, Paul, and Gwen for staying up so late, so we could get it right..."

Step 8 Finish composing the body of your speech.

  • To recognize people by function, you could say, “I also want to thank everyone who brightened up this long journey with good humor, such as John, Johnny, Arjen, Peter, Ann, Zoe, etc.”
  • So, for example, you might say: "And for the catering, thanks to Joe, Mike, Mindy, and Jeanette."

Step 9 Compose a conclusion.

  • “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice (Meister Eckhart)
  • “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
  • “I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks” (William Shakespeare)

Timing, Memorizing and Practicing Your Speech

Step 1 Time your speech.

  • You could try using online script timers to get a rough sense of your speech time. However, you should still practice with a real timer because everyone speaks at a slightly different pace.

Step 2 Write keywords or phrases on note cards.

  • You could dress up in the clothes you will be wearing at the event.
  • Try practicing the speech at the event location to get more comfortable.

Can I just say “thanks” in my email response?

If someone says thank you, you can send a simple “thanks” back. But if you’re taking the time to email, adding some extra information makes the email more personal and professional. 

When should I send my thank you email response?

If you’re going to send a thank you email response, do it as soon as possible. Ideally, you’ll do it the same day and certainly within 24 hours. Any later than that, and your recipient may wonder why you bothered.

How to say "you're welcome" professionally in an email

The art of saying thank you often involves not saying thank you at all. That’s right, thank you is a throwaway word that doesn’t express much emotion.

OK, if someone thanks you for taking out the garbage, there’s no need to go over the top, but even “I appreciate your email” is better than a bog-standard “thanks”.

Here are some alternatives you can use. (While some may use thanks, they’re not “thank you”, so they still count!)

  • I appreciate your message
  • Your message means a lot to me
  • Thanks for the kind words
  • Glad I could help
  • It’s great to know I’ve made a difference
  • It’s my pleasure!
  • No need to say thanks; it’s what I do

These are just a few examples of how to say thanks without saying thanks. You can see some more examples below or develop your own. 

Your replies must reflect the context. You can be less formal when responding to thanks from a friend, for example, than your boss or MD.

"Thank you" email response format

The core of any thank you response email is the same, with these four essential parts:

Subject line

We normally suggest considering your signature, but since this person has emailed you before, they’ll know who you are, so don’t worry about it.

Let’s delve into each section in more detail.

This is easy; as you’re responding to the email thread, just click reply, and you’ll use the same one!

OK, if you want to, you can start a whole new email thread, but there is no need. 

If you’re emailing someone you know, so there’s no need to be overly fussy and formal. Don’t worry about using “Dear”. Instead, you can use something like “hello” or “hi”.

You don’t need to go into massive amounts of detail when responding to a thank you email unless you want to.

The body copy should express your thanks (obviously), but you can also use it to provide some extra relevant information.

Let’s say a customer expresses their thanks for something you’ve done; why not ask them to leave a review on your Trustpilot?

Or if your manager thanks you for something you’ve done, highlight some of the other things you’ve done (and then arrange a meeting to discuss your raise!

Or, in another example, you can reply to a recruiter thank you email with a request to stay in touch about new opportunities.

There’s no need to overthink your sign-off. A simple “kind regards”, “many thanks”, or “speak soon” will suffice.

How to reply to a “thank you” email professionally examples

It is correct to say “Thank you for your email” to express gratitude for the sender’s message. For example, if you submit a service request on a website, the reply might say, “Thank you for your email. A representative will respond shortly.” In business use, this interjection acknowledges that you received the message.

What Does “Thank You for Your Email” Mean?

“Thank you for your email” is a polite way to express gratitude to the sender of a specific electronic message. Let’s examine the meaning of the individual words in this phrase.

“Thank you” is a common expression of gratitude. It is a minor sentence derived from the full sentence, “ I thank you .” Like most minor sentences, “thank you” omits the subject because it is clear that the speaker is the subject.

“Thank you” and “thanks” both express gratitude, but they are not necessarily interchangeable. “Thanks” is suitable for personal and informal conversation, while “Thank you” is a polite expression that is appropriate in formal and business correspondence ( source ).

More importantly, regardless of its delivery channel, an email has a specific sender and a targeted recipient (or group of recipients). 

How Do You Use “Thank You for Your Email”?

“Thank you for your email” is a minor sentence you would write to a specific person in direct response to a particular email. As a minor sentence, “Thank you for your email” only makes sense when you use it in context. This is because the context supplies the information that minor sentences leave out.

In this case, you are omitting the subject “I” to form the minor sentence. But because you are the writer, the recipient understands that you are the one who is expressing gratitude.

Similarly, because you are saying “Thank you for your email” to a specific person, that person understands that he or she is the recipient of your gratitude, represented by the object “you” in your sentence.

The prepositional phrase “for your email” adds the rest of the context. Since you are thanking the person for an email, you would only use this phrase in response to an email that the other person sent you. Typically, you would use “Thank you for your email” as a direct and immediate response to the other person’s message.

When Can You Use “Thank You for Your Email”?

You may say “Thank you for your email” in response to the initial message of a new conversation. Use it when you wish to acknowledge your receipt of a message or when you wish to establish a polite tone for the discussion.

Automatic Contact Form Responses

When you visit a commercial website, you can probably find a link that says “Contact us.” On most commercial sites, this link directs the user to a form you must fill out and submit.

By thanking someone for raising a concern, you are committing to take the sender’s concern seriously and work toward a resolution. Furthermore, it shows that you do not wish to argue with the other person or dismiss his or her concern.

Using “Thank You for Your Email” in a Full Sentence

As a minor sentence, “Thank you for your email” expresses a complete idea when delivered in context. However, there are ways to add other useful information when it is helpful to do so.

When you are responding to a concern or complaint, you might add a clause to summarize the issue:

  • Thank you for your email about your missing package.
  • Thank you for your email about the broken light.

Other times, you might give the user insight into what steps you are taking next or suggest that they take:

  • Thank you for your email ; I have forwarded it to our maintenance manager.
  • Thank you for your email . Please call me to discuss this matter.

When Not to Use “Thank You for Your Email”

Do not use “Thank you for your email” in casual conversations, during an ongoing discussion, or in places where the sender and recipient are not clearly understood.

“Thank you for your email” works nicely in response to an initial message, but it is out of place once a conversation has progressed. For example, if your exchange with the complaining customer develops into a continuing dialogue, it would not be appropriate to thank the customer for subsequent emails in the exchange.

If you do, the customer might think that the response is coming from a different person who was not involved in the initial exchange or that the company representative hasn’t been paying attention. In either case, an out-of-place “Thank you” will probably have the opposite effect from what you intended.

Remembering that our definition of “email” refers to communication with a specific sender and recipient, you wouldn’t say “Thank you for your email” on a message board or comment thread where anybody can contribute.

Public forums such as message boards are useful places to discuss with many people at once, and another user might provide a helpful link or a beneficial insight. But you wouldn’t thank the other user for their email because a post in a public space is not an email.

You also wouldn’t use “Thank you for your email” in personal or informal conversations. Doing so might come across as cold and detached. So, if a friend sends you a text or even an email to wish you well or follow up on a situation you’ve previously shared, an informal “thanks” is more appropriate.

What Can You Use Instead of “Thank You for Your Email”?

Below are common variations of “Thank you for your email” and suggestions for tailoring your response to your specific situation.

Here are some equivalent phrases that are suitable for business or other formal writing:

  • Thank you for contacting us.
  • Thank you for your message.
  • Thank you for your inquiry.

Many companies add specific details to their automated responses:

  • Thank you for contacting Member Services.
  • Thank you for submitting a missing order claim.

In casual conversation and personal discussions, you can use informal alternatives:

Without having interjections in our grammatical toolbox, we might end up writing very clumsy-sounding responses, such as:

  • Unfortunately, I can’t answer your message today, but I will when I return next week.

Most promotions include a raise. So, you may also want to thank your boss for the raise.

The primary reason for the note is thanking for the promotion, so adding “Thank you for the raise” may be sufficient. 

You can read the thank your boss for the raise messages, which may help you add wording to include the raise in your message. I have also included some examples below to help you say thank you for a raise and a promotion.

Short and Sweet Can Work

A short note that only says “Thank you for the promotion.” may be enough if you don’t have anything else you want to say.

A longer message may better show your appreciation. However, only saying “Thank you for the promotion.” is better than not expressing your gratitude at all.

And remember to stick to the topic. Leave out unnecessary flattery. 

Writing an Email or a Handwritten Note

Writing a thank you email for a promotion is fine in an office setting. 

If you can hand your boss a notecard in person or leave it on their desk, you may want to make the extra effort to handwrite a note.

However, asking your boss for their home address is not good workplace etiquette. If they work in another office location, you could mail a note or letter to them at that location. 

Don’t Mention Dollar Amounts

I don’t recommend mentioning any actual dollar amounts or percentages of your promotion or raise. You don’t know who else may see your note (even if sent via email).

Leaving out the amount will help keep any monetary increases confidential if other teammates happen to see your note.

Protests over the war in Gaza erupted on Columbia University’s campus last week and have sparked demonstrations at other universities across the country.

The demonstrations appear to be growing in the face of intense crackdowns involving local law enforcement, as well as growing political scrutiny. And they have once again, made top universities the locus around which America litigates questions about the US’s support of Israel amid its deadly war in Gaza, free speech, antisemitism, and anti-Muslim discrimination — and a convenient target for political elites looking to make a point . For example: Lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson , visiting Columbia’s campus this week.

The demonstrations intensified in the wake of recent congressional hearings on antisemitism on campus and amid an uptick in both antisemitism and anti-Muslim sentiment in the US. And they have spread across the country, including at Yale University , New York University , the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , Miami University in Ohio , and Temple University in Philadelphia , among other campuses.

At Columbia, Yale, the University of Texas-Austin, Emerson College, the University of Southern California, and New York University, students have faced mass arrests as administrators seek to quell the unrest. As of Friday, more than 500 people, including faculty like Noëlle McAfee at Emory University and Sinan Antoon of NYU , have been arrested . In an echo of previous protest movements — including those on universities in the mid-20th century , as well as more recent demonstrations for civil rights — protests at some schools , including the University of Texas , appear to be growing in response to police crackdowns on protesters.

The protests are calling on universities to divest from firms that they contend profit from Israel’s war and occupation in Palestine , more than six months after the start of the war and as the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 34,000 . Some groups at universities that conduct military research, like New York University , are also requesting their schools end work contributing to weapons development as well.

Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protests have become a prominent feature on college campuses since Hamas ’s October 7 attack on Israel . They reached a fever pitch in December when the presidents of Harvard, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania gave controversial testimony before Congress about campus antisemitism, both real and hypothetical .

Tensions reignited last week after Columbia president Nemat Shafik gave congressional testimony that, per the Associated Press, focused on “fighting antisemitism rather than protecting free speech.” Students erected tents on Columbia’s main lawn to show solidarity with Gaza. Then Shafik took the controversial step of calling in the police to arrest those involved.

That contentious decision wasn’t just jarring to Columbia students particularly because of the university’s history , but also sparked outrage among onlookers both at the site and on social media.

The controversy at Columbia and other campuses has illustrated how universities have struggled to uphold their dual commitments to free speech and protecting their students during a fraught political moment when more young people sympathize with the Palestinian cause than with the Israeli government. Concerns about antisemitism at the protests (often attributed to students, but largely perpetrated by outsiders according to anecdotal reporting) also piqued national attention; amid this all, Columbia University switched to remote learning on April 22 — which also happened to be the first day of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

“Calling the police on campus is such a breach of the culture of a college or university,” Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, which is representing arrested Columbia students, told Vox. “To do so in response to nonviolent student protest is beyond the pale, and it really undermines the standing of the university in the eyes of a broad swath of the population as a place of free, open, and robust dialogue and debate.”

What’s actually happening on college campuses

It all started at Columbia, where students pitched more than 50 tents on the lawn in what they called a “ Liberated Zone ” on April 17. But the tents stayed up only about a day and a half before Shafik intervened. “The current encampment violates all of the new policies, severely disrupts campus life, and creates a harassing and intimidating environment for many of our students,” she wrote in an April 18 letter to the Columbia community.

The police arrived shortly thereafter to arrest students for trespassing and removed more than 100 protesters, tying their hands with zip ties. Some have also been suspended and removed from student housing.

In the days since, pro-Palestinian student groups on other university campuses have staged similar protests in solidarity with their counterparts at Columbia. Students have also erected encampments at Yale, Harvard University, the University of Michigan, New York University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.

A total of 47 students were arrested at Yale on Monday, and more than 150 were arrested at New York University overnight Tuesday. On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed Texas police to the UT-Austin campus, where they arrested 34 including a journalist. Boston police also arrested 108 people at a protest led by Emerson College students who linked arms tightly and raised umbrellas. Four officers were injured while trying to break up the crowd.

A lot of the national attention has focused less on the protesters’ demands or the US-Israeli relationship — and the destruction of Gaza — and more on allegations that the protests are inherently antisemitic for criticizing Israel, or that specific antisemitic incidents have occurred. Shafik announced that all Columbia classes would be virtual on Monday (and now hybrid through the end of the academic year ) to provide a “reset” on the conversation and in light of students’ safety concerns — Rabbi Elie Buechler, a rabbi associated with Columbia University’s Orthodox Union Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus, had urged hundreds of Orthodox Jewish students to go home and urged them to stay there for their safety.

“I cannot but agree that this is motivated by trying to pacify congressional members who are trying to interfere in the running of this university and, at this point, all universities,” Marianne Hirsch , professor emerita of English and comparative literature and the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender at Columbia University, said at a press conference in front of Shafik’s house Tuesday.

Student protests on Columbia’s campus have been nonviolent so far. Representatives from the New York Police Department said during a press conference Monday that there had been some incidents in which Israeli flags were snatched from students and unspecified hateful things said. But they said that there have not been any reports of Columbia students being physically harmed or any credible threats made against individuals or groups associated with the university community ahead of the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

The police only enter Columbia’s campus when asked, given that it is a private university. They have established off-campus “safe corridors” where officers are stationed and will intervene in incidents involving harassment, threats, or menacing behavior — which does not constitute protected speech under the First Amendment.

However, a video surfaced over the weekend of what appeared to be masked pro-Palestinian protesters outside of Columbia’s gates shouting , “The 7th of October is going to be every day for you,” at Jewish students. It’s not clear whether those shouting were affiliated with the university.

Just after the video was circulated, President Joe Biden issued a statement: “This blatant Antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous — and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country.”

That statement served as a “blanket condemnation of the Columbia protests,” said Matt Berkman , an assistant professor of Jewish studies at Oberlin College. It failed to distinguish those featured in the video who may not have been affiliated with the university from the vast majority of student protesters, who based on many different accounts , have been peaceful.

In a video address Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also misleadingly characterized the protests, falsely claiming that “antisemitic mobs have taken over leading universities” in a video address and compared them to rallies held in Germany during the rise of the Nazi party.

“Pro-Israel activists are clearly invested in painting everyone at Columbia, whether inside or outside the gates, with the same broad brush,” Berkman said.

On Tuesday, a student draped in an Israeli flag spoke to reporters from within the fenced-in area of the encampment. Jewish students who have been suspended from Columbia and Barnard stated that they had celebrated a Passover Seder within the encampment at a press conference.

There are antisemitic incidents in the United States, which represent real danger to Jewish communities and individuals — and they have increased since the Hamas attacks on October 7.

In December, the Anti-Defamation League reported that antisemitic incidents had increased by nearly 340 percent since then . Complicating its data, however, is the fact that the ADL’s annual audit of antisemitic assaults, vandalism, and harassment also includes in the latter categories some anti-Zionist activism. Removing all Israel-related incidents from their count, America has a smaller but still big problem: Non-Israel-related antisemitic incidents still rose by 65 percent compared to 2022, per their data .

Columbia students aren’t alone in facing broad accusations of antisemitism. Students at Yale, the Ohio State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and others have all been called out by the ADL for engaging in Palestine solidarity protests as well as for specific incidents of antisemitism. Nor are they alone in facing arrest; NYU students and faculty and students at Yale have also been arrested .

Police involvement in the protests — particularly on New York City campuses — has been met with backlash, particularly from university faculty and activists.

Veronica Salama, who as a staff attorney at NYCLU is part of the team defending these students, told Vox that Shafik called the police as part of her emergency powers — but in doing so violated university policy. Vox has reached out to Columbia for comment and will update with its response.

According to an email obtained by Vox, university administration originally set a deadline of midnight Tuesday night to reach an agreement to dismantle the encampment; if none is reached, the email said, the administration “will have to consider alternative options for clearing the West Lawn and restoring calm to campus.” That deadline has been repeatedly extended, however.

What’s behind the protests?

In many ways, the demands of the protesters have been overshadowed by the controversy.

At Columbia, the protesters belong to a coalition, Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), which formed in 2016 to demand Columbia and Barnard College disclose investments in and divest — or remove from its investment portfolio — from Israeli and American companies and institutions that support Israel, citing its wars in Gaza and oppression of Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory.

The coalition’s demands are of a piece with the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement started by Palestinian civil society groups in 2005. BDS cites as its inspiration the anti-apartheid activists of the 1980s who targeted South Africa’s apartheid government with boycotts.

While that movement wasn’t decisive in bringing down that government, it was successful in alienating the apartheid government from major global players like Barclays bank, the Olympics , and the International Cricket Conference , forcing countries and international institutions to confront their complicity in South Africa’s racist policies.

In addition to divestment from “companies profiting from Israeli apartheid,” CUAD has a list of five other demands, including a call for an immediate ceasefire from government officials including President Joe Biden , and, importantly, an end to the dual degree program that Columbia has with Tel Aviv University.

These demands echo those of student groups at other colleges and universities. NYU student activists are also demanding the university shut down its Tel Aviv campus and “divest from all corporations aiding in the genocide,” including weapons companies , and ban weapons tech research that benefits Israel .

Critics allege that BDS and anti-Zionism are at their core antisemitic , arguing that BDS delegitimizes Israel and “effectively reject[s] or ignore[s] the Jewish people’s right of self-determination, or that, if implemented, would result in the eradication of the world’s only Jewish state, are antisemitic,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The nature and tenor of the campus anti-war protests has been at the forefront of both media coverage and congressional hearings on antisemitism and campus free speech. But administrative response to them — particularly calling the police and issuing suspensions — has added a new dimension to the debate.

It’s all part of a broader fight over free speech and antisemitism on college campuses

Universities have struggled to balance their goals of protecting free speech and combatting antisemitism since the outbreak of war in Gaza, which has proved a political minefield.

In December, a trio of university presidents who testified before Congress were accused ( if not fairly ) of being too permissive of free speech in the face of antisemitism or being too legalistic in their explanations of their situation.

Now, some universities seem to be changing their tack.

Shafik called in the police on protesters despite Columbia’s longstanding reputation as a bastion of free speech . The University of Southern California recently canceled the commencement speech of its pro-Palestinian valedictorian over campus safety concerns. And now NYU has also instituted a police crackdown on protesters.

Private universities, like many of those experiencing protests today, have long maintained policies that protect free speech similarly to the First Amendment: permitting anything up to genuine threats of violence and threatening behavior that would warrant punishment or even referrals to the criminal system. But the last six months have seemingly made many of them question not just when and where a threat begins, but also maybe even those commitments to students’ free speech more broadly. And complicating this all is a years-long history of pro-Palestinian activists saying they face targeted harassment .

Alex Morey , director of campus rights advocacy for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, said that if Columbia wants to remain committed to free speech, it has an obligation to apply its speech policies in an equitable manner that is unbiased against any particular viewpoint and to ensure that students currently facing disciplinary action are offered due process.

“Columbia providing due process, while fairly and consistently applying its viewpoint-neutral speech policies, will be absolutely mandatory here if Columbia wants to start back on the right path,” Morey said.

Prohibiting students from camping out or blocking entrances or exits is “all above board” if applied uniformly, Morey added. But schools should see calling the police to enforce any such policies as a last resort, said Frederick Lawrence , the former president of Brandeis University and a lecturer at Georgetown Law.

“I understand the very strong desire to protect the safety of all the students involved,” he said. “At the end of the day, the presumption should be in favor of free speech and free expression, and there are exceptions to that, but [starting] with that presumption often brings a lot of clarity to these vital decisions.”

Sophia Bush Thanks Fans for ‘Kindness’ After Coming Out as Queer: ‘Courage is Contagious’

Sophia Bush is thanking her fans and followers for the support she received after coming out as queer and confirming her relationship with USWNT alum Ashlyn Harris .

“Ever-evolving + still weird,” the Chicago P.D . alum, 41, captioned a behind-the-scenes video of her Glamour shoot via Instagram on Friday, April 26.

She continued, “Thank you for the kindness, vulnerability, and the stories and journeys of your own so many of you have shared. Courage is contagious. Here’s to a life in progress.”

Fans, friends and celebs were quick to comment on Bush’s post, with her fellow “Drama Queens” podcast cohost and former One Tree Hill costar Hilarie Burton Morgan writing, “Love you love you love you,” while Harris, 38, said,”You’re perfect.”

A separate social media user added, “What a WOMAN, what a SHOOT, what an incredible human being. You are PHENOMENAL and a force to be reckoned with. You’re going to help so many other humans feel like they can breathe again too.”

Bush came out in a self-written cover story for Glamour published on Thursday, April 25, which marked the first time she commented on her romance with Harris. She also denied that she cheated on her ex-husband, Grant Hughes .

“As I came into myself, I already felt it was my home. I think I’ve always known that my sexuality exists on a spectrum,” Bush wrote. “Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer. I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.”

She continued, “I finally feel like I can breathe. I don’t think I can explain how profound that is. I feel like I was wearing a weighted vest for who knows how long. I hadn’t realized how heavy it was until I finally just put it down.”

Bush was married to Hughes, 42, for a little more than one year before the John Tucker Must Die actress filed for divorce in August 2023. By October of that year, she was romantically linked to Harris after they bonded amid their respective splits.

Harris was previously married to U.S. soccer star Ali Krieger , whom she wed in 2019. The exes are parents to two children: daughter Sloane, 3, and son Ocean, 20 months.

In her essay, Bush also addressed the “blatant lies” and “accusations of being a homewrecker” amid her and Harris’ divorces, maintaining that the allegations made against her were untrue.

Though Bush said her coming out journey was “long and thoughtful and exhaustive” and one that she didn’t want to share on social media in real time, she said her parents are fully supportive of her and who she loves.

“After the news became public, my mom told me that one of her friends called her and said, ‘Well, this can’t be true. I mean, your daughter isn’t gay,’” Bush wrote. “My mom felt that it was obvious, from the way her friend emphasized the word, that she meant it judgmentally. And you know what my mom said? ‘Oh honey, I think she’s pretty gay. And she’s happy.’”
