1. industry overview.

Players in the Solar Water Heater installation industry basically install solar water heater systems as part of general residential and commercial contracting services. These operators are contracted either directly by the customer or by solar marketing companies that arrange buyers for solar thermal systems and contract an industry operator to carry out the work.

If you are an observer of the Solar Water Heater Installation industry, you will agree that the industry has very low barriers to entry. Companies with knowledge of plumbing and general construction can enter the industry with relative ease.

Successful operators should have a working knowledge of the systems they are installing as well as building codes and state-specific incentives. This information is widely available and does not require a specialized technical background to understand.

The largest barrier to entry for new participants is lacking a proven track record of installing solar water heater systems. This barrier can be overcome relatively easily by initially providing installation services at a discount to gain a foothold in the market. Notably, this strategy will pressure profit margins and may preclude entry by companies with limited capital resources.

The Solar Water Heater Installation industry is indeed a large industry and pretty much active in countries such as United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Australia and Canada et al.

Statistics has it that in the United States of America alone, there are about 786 registered and licensed solar water heater installation companies scattered all across the United States responsible for employing about 1,783 people and the industry rakes in a whooping sum of $188 million annually. The industry is projected to grow at 3.1 percent annual growth within 2012 and 2017. It is important to state that there is no establishment in this industry that has the largest market share.

A recent report published by IBISWORLD shows that the Solar Water Heater Installation industry had an erratic past five years. The industry’s saving grace was an assortment of both federal and state solar investment tax credits (ITCs), which subsidized the cost of solar water heater installations.

Over the next five years, revenue growth is forecast to grow as corporate profit increases and technological advances continue to make solar water heaters more economical than natural gas. Nonetheless, regulatory policies that have been so favorable for the industry remain uncertain in light of an unresolved federal budgetary deficit, limiting overall revenue growth.

Some of the factors that encourage entrepreneurs to start their own solar water heater installation business are that the business is profitable, and it can be started with minimal capital and employees.

By defining a strong and compelling USP and value proposition, you can differentiate your solar water heater business and effectively communicate the benefits of your product to customers. This will help attract and retain customers, ultimately leading to the success and profitability of your business.

Develop A Pricing Strategy And Financial Projections

Developing a pricing strategy is essential for the success of your solar water heater business. It involves determining the cost of manufacturing and selling your product, as well as considering market demand and competitive pricing.

Here are some important considerations when developing your pricing strategy:

  • Calculate the cost of materials, labor, production, and installation to determine the total cost of each unit.
  • Consider competitor prices to ensure your pricing is competitive and attractive to customers.
  • Factor in any additional costs such as marketing, sales commissions, and overhead expenses.
  • Decide whether to offer different pricing tiers based on product features or customer segments.

Once you have determined your pricing strategy, you can then move on to creating financial projections for your business. Financial projections are crucial for understanding the potential profitability and growth of your solar water heater business.

Here are some steps to consider when creating your financial projections:

  • Estimate your sales revenue based on the projected number of units sold and your pricing strategy.
  • Forecast your expenses, including manufacturing costs, marketing expenses, employee salaries, and overhead expenses.
  • Calculate your gross profit by subtracting your total costs from your sales revenue.
  • Consider any financing options or loans that may be necessary to start and sustain your business.
  • Regularly review and adjust your pricing strategy and financial projections based on market changes and business performance.
  • Consider offering special promotions or discounts to incentivize customers and drive sales.
  • Consult with an accountant or financial advisor to ensure your financial projections are accurate and realistic.

Assess Legal And Regulatory Requirements

Before starting a business in the solar water heater industry, it is crucial to assess the legal and regulatory requirements that must be met. Ignoring these requirements can result in hefty fines, penalties, or even the shutdown of your business. Here are some important considerations:

  • Obtain necessary permits and licenses: Research and identify the permits and licenses required to operate a solar water heater business in your area. This may include building permits, environmental permits, or specific licenses for installation and maintenance of solar equipment. Contact your local government agencies to acquire the necessary paperwork and ensure compliance.
  • Comply with building codes and zoning regulations: Familiarize yourself with local building codes and zoning regulations that pertain to solar water heater installations. Ensure that your business operations and equipment installations adhere to these requirements to avoid any legal issues.
  • Understand safety and electrical regulations: Solar water heaters involve electrical components, and it is essential to comply with safety and electrical regulations. Ensure that your installations meet industry standards and comply with all necessary codes to provide safe and reliable systems to your customers.
  • Stay updated on rebates and incentives: Some regions provide financial incentives or rebates for the installation of solar water heaters. Research and stay updated on any available programs to inform your customers and potentially attract more business.
  • Consult with a legal professional: To ensure full compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, consider seeking advice from an attorney or legal expert specializing in the renewable energy industry.
  • Stay informed about evolving regulations: Solar energy regulations can change over time. Stay updated on any regulatory changes and adjust your business practices accordingly.
  • Maintain documentation: Keep thorough records of all permits, licenses, and compliance documentation. This will be useful for future reference and potential audits.

Define The Business Structure And Obtain Necessary Permits And Licenses

Defining the business structure is an essential step in establishing a solar water heater business. It determines the legal and financial responsibilities of the company and affects factors such as taxes, liability, and ownership. Determine whether your business will operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation. Consult with a business attorney or a professional specializing in small business structure to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option and select the most appropriate structure for your business.

Once the business structure is defined, it is crucial to obtain the necessary permits and licenses. Research the local, state, and federal regulations governing the manufacturing, marketing, and selling of solar water heaters. Specific permits and licenses may vary depending on the location, so it is essential to conduct thorough research and comply with all regulations.

  • Obtaining a business license: Research the requirements for obtaining a business license in your jurisdiction. Contact the local city or county office responsible for business licensing and inquire about the specific permits needed for operating a solar water heater business.
  • Obtaining manufacturing permits: If your business involves manufacturing solar water heaters, you may need permits specific to manufacturing operations. These permits ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Contact the appropriate regulatory agencies or local authorities to understand the requirements for obtaining manufacturing permits.
  • Obtaining sales permits: As a direct sales business, it is crucial to obtain the necessary permits for selling solar water heaters. These permits might include a sales tax permit, a vendor's license, or a resale certificate. Check with your state's department of revenue or taxation for the specific permits required in your area.
  • Obtaining contractor's licenses: If your business includes installation services, it may be necessary to obtain contractor's licenses or certifications. These licenses demonstrate your expertise and compliance with industry standards. Research the licensing requirements for contractors in your state and ensure that your company meets all the necessary qualifications.

Tips for obtaining permits and licenses:

  • Start the process early: Permit and license applications can be time-consuming, so it is advisable to initiate the process as soon as possible.
  • Gather all required documentation: Be prepared with all the necessary documentation and information when submitting permit and license applications. This may include business identification documents, financial statements, and legal agreements.
  • Consult with professionals: Seek guidance from legal and regulatory experts to ensure compliance with all requirements. Consulting with attorneys specializing in business law or professionals familiar with the solar industry can provide valuable insights and assistance throughout the licensing process.
  • Maintain compliance: Once permits and licenses are obtained, it is essential to adhere to all regulations and promptly renew any licenses or permits that have expiration dates.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes: Regulations surrounding solar water heaters may evolve over time. Stay informed about any changes in the industry and adjust your business practices accordingly to remain compliant.

Establish A Marketing And Sales Strategy

Once you have identified your target market and customer needs, conducted market research and competitive analysis, and determined the feasibility and profitability of your solar water heater business, it's time to establish a robust marketing and sales strategy. This strategy will help you effectively promote your products and services, generate leads, and convert them into loyal customers.

1. Define your target audience: Clearly define who your ideal customers are based on demographics, location, and specific needs. This will help you tailor your marketing efforts and ensure that your message resonates with the right people.

2. Craft a compelling value proposition: Determine the unique selling points of your solar water heaters and clearly articulate them to your target audience. Highlight the benefits they will experience by choosing your products and explain how your solutions differ from your competitors.

3. Develop a comprehensive marketing plan: Create a roadmap that outlines the various marketing channels you will utilize to reach your target market. Consider online advertising, social media, content marketing, search engine optimization, email marketing, and traditional advertising methods. Prioritize the channels that are most likely to reach your target audience effectively.

4. Build a strong online presence: In today's digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. Develop a professional website that showcases your solar water heaters, their features, and customer testimonials. Leverage social media platforms to engage with your audience, share valuable content, and promote your products. Consider creating informative blog posts, videos, and webinars to establish yourself as a thought leader in the industry.

5. Establish partnerships: Collaborate with relevant organizations and industry influencers to expand your reach. Seek partnerships with home improvement retailers, green building associations, and energy efficiency organizations. These partnerships can provide access to their customer base and create opportunities for cross-promotion.

  • Offer incentives for referrals: Encourage your existing customers to refer others to your business by offering rewards or discounts.
  • Provide exceptional customer service: Establish a reputation for excellent customer service by promptly addressing inquiries, offering support, and maintaining open lines of communication.
  • Attend trade shows and industry events: Participate in relevant trade shows and industry events to showcase your products, network with potential customers, and stay updated on the latest trends and innovations.
  • Utilize customer testimonials: Share success stories and testimonials from satisfied customers to build trust and credibility in your brand.
  • Consider strategic advertising: Invest in targeted online advertising campaigns to reach your specific target audience more effectively.
  • Monitor and evaluate your marketing efforts regularly: Track the performance of your marketing campaigns, analytics, and customer feedback to identify areas for improvement and refine your strategy.

Create An Outline Of The Business Plan Framework

Creating a clear and organized outline of your business plan is essential for ensuring that all important aspects are covered and that your plan is cohesive and easy to follow. Here are some key considerations to include in your business plan framework:

  • Executive Summary: Provide an overview of your business, including its mission, vision, and goals.
  • Company Description: Describe your company, including its structure, legal status, and key personnel.
  • Market Analysis: Conduct a thorough analysis of your target market, including customer needs, competitors, and market trends.

  • Sales and Marketing Strategy: Outline your plan for reaching and engaging with customers, including sales channels, marketing tactics, and customer acquisition strategies.
  • Financial Projections: Present financial forecasts for your business, including revenue projections, expenses, and profitability.
  • Operations and Production Plan: Explain how your solar water heaters will be manufactured, distributed, and installed.
  • Management and Organizational Structure: Provide information on the management team and organizational structure of your company.
  • Risk Analysis: Identify potential risks and challenges that may affect the success of your business and outline contingency plans.
  • Implementation Plan: Outline the steps you will take to execute your business plan, including timelines and milestones.
  • Keep your outline concise and clear, highlighting the most important points of each section.
  • Use bullet points or subheadings to organize your outline for easy navigation.
  • Ensure that each section flows logically and supports the overall narrative of your business plan.
  • Include relevant data and research to support your claims and projections.
  • Consider seeking feedback from mentors, advisors, or industry experts to refine your business plan framework.

In conclusion, writing a business plan for a solar water heater involves careful analysis and planning. By following the nine steps outlined above - identifying the target market and customer needs, conducting market research and competitive analysis, determining feasibility and profitability, defining the unique selling proposition and value proposition, developing a pricing strategy and financial projections, assessing legal and regulatory requirements, defining the business structure and obtaining necessary permits and licenses, establishing a marketing and sales strategy, and creating an outline of the business plan framework - you can set yourself up for success in the solar water heater industry. Solar water heaters -- sometimes called solar domestic hot water systems -- can be a  cost-effective way  to generate hot water for your home. They can be used in any climate, and the fuel they use -- sunshine -- is free.

How They Work

Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which have circulating pumps and controls, and passive, which don't.

Active Solar Water Heating Systems

There are two types of active solar water heating systems:

  • Direct circulation systems Pumps circulate household water through the collectors and into the home. They work well in climates where it rarely freezes.
  • Indirect circulation systems Pumps circulate a non-freezing,  heat-transfer fluid  through the collectors and a  heat exchanger . This heats the water that then flows into the home. They are popular in climates prone to freezing temperatures.

Passive Solar Water Heating Systems

Passive solar water heating systems are typically less expensive than active systems, but they're usually not as efficient. However, passive systems can be more reliable and may last longer. There are two basic types of passive systems:

  • Integral collector-storage passive systems These consist of a storage tank covered with a transparent material to allow the sun to heat the water.  Water from the tank then flows into the plumbing system. These work best in areas where temperatures rarely fall below freezing. They also work well in households with significant daytime and evening hot-water needs.
  • Thermosyphon systems Water is heated in a collector on the roof and then flows through the plumbing system when a hot water faucet is opened. The majority of these systems have a 40 gallon capacity.

Storage Tanks and Solar Collectors

Most solar water heaters require a well-insulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank.

Three types of solar collectors are used for residential applications:

  • Flat-plate collector Glazed flat-plate collectors are insulated, weatherproofed boxes that contain a dark absorber plate under one or more glass or plastic (polymer) covers. Unglazed flat-plate collectors -- typically used for  solar pool heating  -- have a dark absorber plate, made of metal or polymer, without a cover or enclosure.
  • Integral collector-storage systems Also known as ICS or  batch  systems, they feature one or more black tanks or tubes in an insulated, glazed box. Cold water first passes through the solar collector, which preheats the water. The water then continues on to the conventional backup water heater, providing a reliable source of hot water. They should be installed only in mild-freeze climates because the outdoor pipes could freeze in severe, cold weather.
  • Evacuated-tube solar collectors They feature parallel rows of transparent glass tubes. Each tube contains a glass outer tube and metal absorber tube attached to a fin. The fin's coating absorbs solar energy but inhibits radiative heat loss. These collectors are used more frequently for U.S. commercial applications.

Solar water heating systems almost always require a backup system for cloudy days an

d times of increased demand.  Conventional storage water heaters  usually provide backup and may already be part of the solar system package. A backup system may also be part of the solar collector, such as rooftop tanks with thermosyphon systems. Since an integral-collector storage system already stores hot water in addition to collecting solar heat, it may be packaged with a  tankless or demand-type water heater  for backup.

Selecting a Solar Water Heater

Before you purchase and install a solar water heating system, you want to do the following:

  • Estimate the cost and energy efficiency of a solar water heating system
  • Evaluate your site's solar resource
  • Determine the correct system size
  • Investigate local codes, covenants, and regulations .

Also understand the various components needed for solar water heating systems, including the following:

  • Heat exchangers for solar water heating systems
  • Heat-transfer fluids for solar water heating systems

Installing and Maintaining the System

Solar

The proper installation of solar water heaters depends on many factors. These factors include solar resource, climate, local building code requirements, and safety issues; therefore, it's best to have a qualified solar thermal systems contractor install your system.

After installation, properly maintaining your system will keep it running smoothly. Passive systems don't require much maintenance. For active systems, discuss the maintenance requirements with your system provider, and consult the system's owner's manual. Plumbing and other conventional water heating components require the same maintenance as conventional systems. Glazing may need to be cleaned in dry climates where rainwater doesn't provide a natural rinse.

Regular maintenance on simple systems can be as infrequent as every 3–5 years, preferably by a solar contractor. Systems with electrical components usually require a replacement part or two after 10 years. Learn more about  solar water heating system maintenance and repair .

When screening potential contractors for installation and/or maintenance, ask the following questions:

  • Does your company have experience installing and maintaining solar water heating systems? Choose a company that has experience installing the type of system you want and servicing the applications you select.
  • How many years of experience does your company have with solar heating installation and maintenance? The more experience the better. Request a list of past customers who can provide references.
  • Is your company licensed or certified? Having a valid plumber's and/or solar contractor's license is required in some states. Contact your city and county for more information. Confirm licensing with your state's contractor licensing board. The licensing board can also tell you about any complaints against state-licensed contractors.

Improving Energy Efficiency

After your water heater is properly installed and maintained, try some additional  energy-saving strategies  to help lower your water heating bills, especially if you require a back-up system. Some energy-saving devices and systems are more cost-effective to install with the water heater.
