At the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics

Thesis and Capstone Projects

A thesis or capstone project is a requirement for every graduate student at MIT.

The project needs to be practical, relevant, and address a problem of great interest to industry or other entities with supply chain challenges. These projects are performed with a sponsoring company, NGO, government agency, or trade association. 

Students bid on projects in September, are matched with projects, partners, and SCM project advisors, and begin working with sponsoring companies shortly afterward. Residential cohort (SCMr) students visit sponsoring companies in October and have weekly calls with project sponsors throughout the academic year.

• Since projects usually require 9 months to complete, SCMb students must do some work at home before arriving on campus – see detailed timeline info below.

In December, students prepare a one-slide “e-poster” outlining their project, and present their work-in-progress at the MIT SCALE Supply Chain Expo at the end of January.

In May, students submit completed projects and present their work to the CTL community and project sponsors. Students may be asked to travel to sponsoring companies in June to present their project and findings to management.

Project Process for Blended Pathway Students

Because SCMb students are on campus for only 5 months they must begin working on their projects in advance. Here is the sequence of work tasks:

Before Applying

• Project Topic: SCMb candidates should think about what kind of supply chain problem they want to work on. They will need to create a convincing two page description of their proposed project. They should think about what kind of an entity might wish to partner with them and what kind of data they will need to perform this project. 

The Application (November to May) 

• All students will complete a capstone project as a component of the program. Projects may be offered by the academic program or proposed directly by applicants. Projects proposed by applicants needs to be practical, relevant, data driven, and address a problem of great interest to industry or other entities with supply chain challenges. These projects are performed with a sponsoring company, NGO, government agency, or trade association.
• Applicants must submit a two page (1000 words) project proposal. Although preferred, this proposal does not require any commitment or discussion on the part of your sponsor. If admitted to the program you will have the option to expand on your proposal to be considered toward the completion of your degree.
• You must impress upon the review committee with the importance of your project to supply chain management and convince them that you can complete the project in a timely manner. Projects will require up to 4 months of remote pre-work prior to enrollment, plus additional time once enrolled in the on campus program.
• Describe the problem including what challenges, industries, markets, products, geographies, processes, etc. are involved?
• What organization or kind of organization will you seek to partner with you on this project?
• How do you propose to gain the cooperation of this kind of organization?
• What methodology would you use to study this problem?
• What types of data will you need to perform this project?
• How do you propose to obtain the data you need for this project?
• If accepted, what pre-work can you do before coming to campus? 
• Can you complete this project in a 9-month time frame, both remote and on campus?

Once Admitted but Before Arrival on campus (August to December)

• Expanded Project Proposal – provide a more detailed description including research question, project scope, methodology, data required, and timing.
• Sources of Data – describe where the data will come from for your quantitative analysis. Show proof that such data exists and that you can get access to it.
• Letter from Sponsor (if collaborating with an entity) – provide a note from any sponsoring entity demonstrating that they intend to provide data and work with you on this project.
• Complete the edX  Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python  course.

Arrival at MIT (first week of January)

• SCMb students arrive a week ahead of the rest of the SCM and SCALE students for orientation
• Students work on their project, attend career development workshops, writing classes, and leadership seminars.

SCALE Connect Expo (January) and Spring Semester – February to May

• SCMb students follow the same project schedule and due dates as the SCMr students

MIT SCM Symposium (May)

• SCMr and SCMb students present the final results of their projects in a day-long event.

He also worked as adjunct faculty around 10 universities . He also worked as a Mechanical Engineer of Jamuna Fertilizer Company, Bangladesh for around seven years. He obtained BSc in Mechanical Engineering degree from RUET (erstwhile BITR) on dated November 27, 1993 with First Class and 8th position, MSc in Mechanical Engineering degree from BUET on dated December 28, 1996 and MBA degree from BOU in 2004. He completed a Diploma in Computer Science and Applications, a PGD in Human Resource Management and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing Management. This paper is dedicated to Arthur Geoffrion, who serves as role model of a great researcher, educator, and practitioner. We believe that research, teaching, and practice are becoming increasingly disengaged from one another in the OR/MS ecosystem. This ecosystem comprises researchers, educators, and practitioners in its core along with end users, universities, and funding agencies. Continuing disengagement will result in OR/MS occupying only niche areas and disappearing as a distinct field even though its tools would live on. To understand the reasons for this disengagement better and to engender discussion among academics and practitioners on how to counter it, we present the ecosystem's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. In Humanitarian Logistics we have:

Humanitarian logistics services

Logistics service provision in the humanitarian context is significant. It represents the first category of services procured by humanitarian organizations. Both commercial and humanitarian logistics providers co-exist in this billion-dollar industry. However, research in this topic is rather scant. How different types of service providers collaborate, how different services integrate to create a seamless supply chain and which service provision model adapts better to the humanitarian context are some of the questions that need further attention.

Crisis preparedness

Logistics for people in the move, temporary settlements, migration logistics

Forced displacement is one of the biggest humanitarian challenges faced by the international community in the 21st century. At the end of 2022, 62.5 million people remained internally displaced because of conflict and violence, and 8.7M as a result of disasters. In spite of great advances on humanitarian logistics research, little has been done regarding the logistics required during migration (people on the move) or for temporary settlements.

Humanitarian logistics in conflict and complex emergencies

Conflict zones provide particular challenges for humanitarian operations. The principle of neutrality can be tricky to uphold amid shifting frontlines and global political pressures. At the same time, access and security are important practical considerations for logistics in these areas. Siege warfare in particular makes effective humanitarian logistics a matter of life and death.  

Circular economy and waste management in humanitarian logistics

Humanitarian logistics, from the frequent use of air freight to the abundance of plastic packaging, can take a toll on the environment, particularly in the vulnerable places it aims to reach. Our research in this area explores circular economy practices for humanitarian supply chains, for example waste management approaches for field hospitals.  

In Supply chain risk resilience & security we have:

Resilient freight transport systems

Even outside of issues like the Suez Canal blockage in 2021 that receive abundant media coverage, there are many disruptions to freight transport systems that affect global supply chains. From low water levels to cyber attacks, our research in this area focuses on increasing the resilient of freight transport systems to allow the more efficient flow of goods.  

Security of supply

Security of supply is fundamental to the societal resilience of a country. Preparedness, and the mitigation of supply chain disruptions support security of supply in many different sectors. This topic further contributes to comprehensive security.

Supply chain risk management

• especially with regards to cascading disasters, overlapping ones, and their incident evolutions

Medical logistics / medical supply chains

Logistics and supply chain management were much highlighted as a backbone to the functioning of public health care during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are not only important for e.g. vaccine distribution and related cold chains but also in regular health care provision, whether concerning pharmaceuticals, medical devices, or the deployment of emergency medical teams and entire field hospitals. Recently, more attention is also paid to environmental considerations in medical supply chains across a variety of topics, from waste management to product and packaging design for circularity, to sustainable energy solutions for medical cold chains.

Sustainable and circular procurement

Procurement management has a unique ability to contribute to the CE agenda. Our research in this area focuses on procurement strategies that emphasize sustainability and circular economy principles, aiming to minimize environmental impact and promote the efficient use of resources.  

Sustainable innovative last mile distribution

Increasing number of last mile deliveries has negative externalities. Research that takes both multiple stakeholder perspective and integrated innovative technologies and business  is needed to overcame  these challenges both in urban and rural contexts. 

Technologies and solutions for circular, resilient or sustainable supply chains

Solving real world challenges requires real world solutions, that are implemented by the organizations facing the challenges. Trough developing a deep understanding of solutions that organizations implement in order to become circular, more resilient and/or sustainable, we reach a deeper understanding of how the challenges could be addressed. Ideally the research would focus on a technological/managerial solution, its implementation and impact. 

Those who have completed a university level Master’s degree can apply to Hanken for doctoral studies. Doctoral students (i.e., doctoral researchers, PhDs) may study for the degree Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) or for the degree Doctor of Philosophy.
