Water is the basis of lives living on earth. But without a proper condition of water, there must be a bad effect on all types of lives as well. As it is becoming worse because of the pollution and the climate change, water conservation is the perfect way to improve the quality of water as well as to balance the current and future water needs. To get through the water conservation, we should know the importance, the goal and how we can conserve the water. In the present scenario management and distribution of water has become centralized. People depend on government system, which has resulted in disruption of community participation in water management and collapse of traditional water harvesting system. As the water crisis continues to become severe, there is a dire need of reform in water management system and revival of traditional systems. Scientific and technological studies needs to be carried out to assess present status so as to suggest suitable mitigative measures for the revival of traditional system/wisdom.

Rainwater harvesting and conservation in principle is a simple technique of catching and holding rainwater where it falls such as rooftops, land surface or rock catchments using simple techniques such as jars and pots as well as more compound technique for instance underground check dam. These techniques usually found in Asia and Africa arises from practices engaged by primeval civilization within these regions and still performs as a major source of drinking water supply in rural areas. Effectiveness of the rainwater harvesting depends on appropriate design of the systems. Be it storage or a recharge structure, an inappropriately planned system will guide to operational problems, thereby raising the operation and maintenance cost. This research study mainly focous on design of rain water harvesting system at Sir Padamapat Singhania University(SPSU), Udaipur. This also includes the design of recharging dug wells or abandoned bore well. This facility will collect water from roof top and carry it all the way up to recharge dug well or abandoned bore well. Running cost of the facility is almost trivial. Water harvested from the roof catchments usually is of acceptable quality for household requirements. Depending upon household requirement water collection capacity can be increased as needed within the available catchment area.

Subsistence rain-fed agriculture has been widely practiced for many centuries in Ethiopia and this sector has been highly dependent on rainfall. Thus, rainfall remains the crucial component of the weather elements for improving agricultural productivity. Extreme climatic conditions and high inter-annual or seasonal variability of this weather element could adversely affect productivity, because rainfall controls the crop yields and determines the choice of crops that can be grown. One of the reasons for low crop production in semi arid areas is marginal and erratic rainfall exacerbated by high runoff and evapotranspiration losses. Rainfall in terms of amount and frequency in a growing season is essential for planning and management of agricultural practices. To avert this problem, the successive Ethiopian government (from the time of Aksumite kingdom to the present) and the local community practiced different water harvesting techniques. The in-situ and ex-situ rainwater harvesting techniques have shown significant impact on improved soil moisture, runoff and ground water recharge; and increased agricultural production, which in turn reduces risks and deliver positive impacts on other ecosystems. Besides, rainwater harvesting has a potential of addressing spatial and temporal water scarcity for domestic consumption, agricultural development and overall water resources management. High water loss through seepage, lack of awareness and being very labor intensive to irrigate the whole fields by pumping the water manually from the pond and applying directly to the crop has been the main challenges of adopting harvested water technologies.

This study documents techniques used by communities to improve indigenous rain water harvesting in the villages of Mpalanga and Chipanga A. Through questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews, data on community’s willingness to accept and adapt the improved techniques was collected. The study also conducted analysis of soil types, local and non-local materials such as logs, grasses, cement as well as open spaces surrounding houses and their potential into suiting to improved techniques of rainwater harvesting. The study revealed that community in two villages harvest rain water traditionally by hanging pieces of clothes on the edge of the flat roof tops to collect and drain water into the bucket placed on the ground. They also collected runoff in open spaces surrounding their houses as well as digging shallow wells in river banks during dry season. Although the techniques are not widely utilized, the villagers came up with improvement strategies of cementing the roofs or covering it with the plastic materials as well as constructing cisterns for harvesting runoff. This study concluded that with the proposed improvement, indigenous rain water harvesting techniques have the potentials to improve water availability for domestic and agricultural production in Bahi district specifically in Mpalanga and Chipanga A villages.

2) Surangaas

Surangas are traditional water harvesting system only used in Kasargod district of south Indian state of Kerala. The soil found in this region is hard laterite which is favorable for the construction of suranga (cave). Suranga is like a horizontal cave excavated in hilly terrain of the area, through which water oozes out and is thus collected in a pond. Though, this method is locally being used since centuries, it is sadly now gradually being replaced by bore wells.

Taankas are part of a traditional rainwater harvesting method practiced in the western state of Gujarat. Taankas are basically underground reservoirs with a capacity of storing thousands of liters of rainwater. Presently there are around ten thousand household in Gujarat’s capital city of Ahmadabad those are using taankas to meet their everyday water requirements. Water stored in a taanka is sealed against sunlight and therefore remains fresh for years.
