For anyone interested (with an OBDeleven device) it's now possible to code 'Presentation mode' for the IQ Matrix lights. I've tried it on my EU spec car, and it works flawlessly.

It looks like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cuivr9_9kQs

https://www.youtube.com/embed/VnRRBYVIPCE

DISCLAIMER: Please be careful with these settings. I'm not a professional, and the following may or may not work for your specific car.

Quote   To Enable it you need to do the following when connected via OBDeleven: Release the hood/bonnet Select Control Unit 4B. Do an SFD unlock (unless you set it to automatic). Following setting are all Adaptions under 4B. Switch on: Presentation mode (This may already be Enabled). Presentation run dynamic AFS light (this will tilt the headlights up and down) (This may already be Enabled). Reference run activation effect (this will switch on the animation as seen above). Set reference run start condition to Motor start (or similar). Ignition can cause problems. In the end: Relock SFD (Or just be bland like me and let SFD time out, it doesn't matter).

Thanks

👍 just wondered if it’s an interesting pattern 😁 be great if you could code your own pattern in.    here’s the RS3 light patterns

Last one sounds scary to me

so if there is a problem with the light, the car won’t start ?

Sounds good, I will try this - thanks for posting.

Lol no no, it just means the 'trigger' for the reference run is 'Engine start'.

What does this look like from the front (outside of car)?

The Rs3 has a very cool start up sequence in the lights spelling RS3

Check the two videos in the topic post.

Sorry, I meant what do the actual headlight themselves look like when doing this.

Ah, uhmm.. well I'm guessing it's hardly noticeable in the lights themselves. But I'll see if i can make a video of it when it's convenient.

MK7.5 OEM LED Headlights Retrofit

  • Thread starter AWD4416
  • Start date Jan 25, 2020

Ready to race!

  • Jan 25, 2020

presentation run dynamic afs light

  • Junction Light - Enable with dynamic cornering, also works with turning with fog
  • City Light - Patterned enable on speeds less than 20 MPH or when turning
  • Country Lights - Default light pattern
  • Motorway Light (Highway light) - Patterned enable on speeds greater than 70 MPH
  • Updated module 4B Coding to fix errors, added City Lights, Highway lights, and High Beam Assist
  • Updated module 09 to include High Beam Assist
  • Added coding for module A5 and High Beam Assist
  • Added Light Assist settings
  • This is a Next Level Retrofit that requires money, time, plenty of patience, and at times prayer
  • Disconnect your battery before messing with anything electrical
  • I’m not responsible if you screw up your car
  • I am open to answering any questions to the best of my ability
  • The LED lights are sort of non-serviceable, so the housing already has the bulb
  • There are 3 versions of the LED lights, 8IT, 8IU, 8IX (US version with amber reflector are based on this model)
  • Only the 8IU is capable of full dynamic light assist (dual beams that dynamically adjust)
  • The lights require two modules. One controls the power and the other the vertical/horizontal axis
  • The modules have firmware specific to the type of light they are being used on (in case you source your parts second hand like I did)
  • One headlight was sourced from someone that said it was new but never installed. It had the proper modules attached. I'm no sure if new lights ship this way so please confirm.
  • The light modules are program by the 4B module. So, if you did like me and got a used module coded for the wrong vehicle (or a virgin one) it needs the proper firmware and parameters loaded to actually work
  • Parameters/firmware can only be loaded by VCP or ODIS
  • Someone posted a link on the vortex “Shop manuals for MK7.5,” this manual is better than the one in the erwin.vw.com site which requires paid access
  • 3Q0907338C – 4B Multifunction module
  • 8W0972420A - 4B Multifunction module wire terminal
  • 7P5941572A - Main Power LED Module (1 for each light)
  • 8V0907399D - LED Control Unit Module (1 for each light)
  • N10708601 - Screws for the modules (I got some from Lowes that have the same thread and cut them to size)
  • M5 bolts/washer/locking nuts - I think I went with 12mm bolt length
  • 5GM941077A [5GM941059A - old] – GTI US - Left LED Headlight
  • 5GM941078A [5GM941060A – old] – GTI US - Right LED Headlight

  • Terminal removal tool set – needed to re-pin the cables
  • Body panel tools – makes taking panels off easy
  • Soldering iron/solder
  • Heat shrink assorted set – to properly protect splices (I started with electrical tape but this is better)
  • Tesa Tape 51036 – to wrap your engine wires (one roll should be enough)
  • Tesa Tape 51608 – to wrap your in-cabin wires (one roll should be enough)
  • Torx bit set – I think T40 and T30 are the ones I used but get a set if you don’t have one
  • 5 AMP mini fuse – for the headlights (1 per light)
  • VAG Connector Removal Tool – makes taking the headlight plugs off easier
  • OBDeleven/VCDS/VCP/ODIS – to reprogram module 9, 19, and 4B
  • VCP – if you source parts from ebay from random cars like I did, you will need VCP to load the proper firmware and parameters (apparently ODIS can do this)
  • Screw drivers/sockets/scissors/a good playlist

I saw your posts on the OBDeleven forums - seriously, incredible work!! And awesome write up. I doubt a VW dealer would even attempt this. I have a question for you about coding.. How are you able to set the market parameter in 4B long coding to “ece” and not get errors? Is it due to different parameters you installed on the light control modules?

AWD44161 said: I've heard of other users having errors after changing to ECE. I'm not sure if they did basic settings followed by acknowledge bacis settings after changing the long coding. Its a hard requirement if you change the long coding. I did flash my 4B and loaded the parameters from VCP like you mention so that could also be the difference but it does work if I set it to NA. However, last time i had it set to NA, the lights didn't move as much. Click to expand...

After some further testing, the (ENG124607-Reference_Run_Activation_Effect) seems to use the matrix leds from the high beam to create a start-up effect. Looks very nice, but after some further thinking, this may 'blind' traffic during startup... Will do some further testing during the weekend, and if potentially disturbing to others will again disable.

Adaptive headlights

Here you will find useful information and handy tips relating to AFS headlamps, which stands for Advanced Front Lighting System.

The classic low beam is in fact a compromise solution, and it's not without its weaknesses. Thanks to its new light functions, the Advanced Front Lighting System (AFS) eliminates the rigid boundaries of the low beam, thereby significantly improving visibility in the dark and in poor weather. HELLA's VarioX technology forms the basis for this. On this page you will find out which new light functions have been made possible by AFS and what advantages they bring.

Important safety note The following technical information and practical tips have been compiled by HELLA in order to provide professional support to vehicle workshops in their work. The information provided on this website is intended for use by suitably qualified personnel only.

Variable light functions

VARIABLE LIGHT FUNCTIONS : BASIC PRINCIPLES

The automotive lighting technology industry has been working to ensure optimal illumination of traffic areas for many years. On the one hand, the road and its surroundings should be illuminated as brightly as possible, so that the driver can safely recognise objects in the traffic area. On the other hand, other road users and the driver themselves should not be dazzled. As such, one of the focal areas for HELLA's lighting technology specialists is to figure out the best way to reconcile, or even eliminate, the conflicting objectives of ensuring excellent illumination while eliminating glare for both the driver and other road users.

The classic solution is switching between high beam and low beam. While the high beam provides a light distribution optimised for illuminating the road, the low beam is a kind of compromise solution to avoid glare. Therefore, the combination high beam/low beam does not represent the optimal state-of-the-art solution when it comes to safety during nighttime driving. A simple, obvious improvement in adverse weather conditions would be to equip the vehicle with special auxiliary headlamps, such as fog lamps, which can be turned on or off by the driver according to the situation. The next step would be to not implement these additional lighting functions as individual auxiliary headlamps, but to integrate them into the main headlamps and to make the switch between various light distributions automatic. This is the basic concept of AFS headlamp systems (Advanced Front Lighting System).

ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS : FUNCTION

Advanced frontlighting system (afs).

The low beam is merely a compromise solution between all partial light distribution options. Therefore, the Advanced Front Lighting System was developed as a dynamic lighting system that allows for the best possible illumination of the road according to speed and steering angle. To implement it, a VarioXÂŽ projection module with a rotating cylinder between light source and lens is required. The cylinder is characterised by the fact that it has varying contours and can also rotate around its own longitudinal axis. A stepper motor turns the cylinder to the required position within milliseconds.

The town light, which is activated at speeds up to 55 km/h, features a horizontal cut-off line to minimise glare for other road users. The wide illumination of the area in front of the vehicle also makes it easier to detect pedestrians at the side of the road.*

COUNTRY LIGHT

The country light is activated between 55 and 100 km/h and is similar to conventional low beam light distribution . The VarioXÂŽ module generates an asymmetric light distribution so that glare for oncoming traffic can be avoided. The cut-off line is raised in order to illuminate the left edge of the road more and to achieve a greater range.*

HIGHWAY LIGHT

The highway light is activated at speeds above 100 km/h. The range of the light distribution is adapted to high curve radii at high speeds.*

The high beam of the AFS works like a conventional high beam, But does not require the driver to take action to avoid exposing other road users to excessive glare.

BEND LIGHTING

The Advanced Front Lighting System also has a dynamic bend lighting function. Depending on the steering angle, the headlamps also swivel by up to 15° and allow optimised illumination of the bend.

ADVERSE WEATHER LIGHT

The adverse weather light creates a wider dispersion of the light to improve visibility in rain, fog, or snow. This feature also reduces far-field illumination to minimise reflective glare affecting the driver’s own vehicle.

* The listed speeds may differ according to the manufacturer.

AFS headlamp systems make it possible to achieve discrete predefined light distributions. The adaptation of the light distribution is dependent on the vehicle speed, the road type, and weather conditions, which represents an enormous improvement over conventional vehicle lighting technology.

As such, HELLA's engineers all agree on one thing: The ideal way to implement such a situation-dependent automatic headlamp system is to use the VarioXÂŽ module. This allows a single xenon light source to generate up to five different light distributions: Besides conventional low beam and high beam, this allows for town, highway, and adverse weather lights with the same headlamp module.

VARIOXÂŽ TECHNOLOGY

The VarioXÂŽ technology is based on the projection principle. Between the light source and the lens, there is a spinning free-form cylinder that can be rotated around its longitudinal axis. The outer surface of the cylinder has different contours that allow the generation of different light distributions on the road. These contours, as well as the entire geometry of the cylinder can be adapted to OEM specifications.

In order to implement AFS systems and camera-based light functions , the VarioXÂŽ module is combined with a special swiveling module. It it extraordinarily quiet and offers not only a high swivel speed and precise positioning, but also a compact design and low swivel mass.

There is an adaptation available to leave the fog lights on when you select high beams. You can also have the fog lights on when DRLs are on. There are also “Scandinavian DRLs” where your tail lights are on with the DRLs, like on many Volvos. Useful in rainy/snowy climates like mine. You can also defeat all the NHTSA locks that prevent you from making adjustments to settings while the vehicle is in motion. I have a Mark 8 GTI, but I think these would work on your cars as well. EDIT: My car is a GTI-S, so no light bar. Don't know about that.

EDIT: My car is a GTI-S, so no light bar. Don't know about that. Click to expand...

I'm not talking about VIM, I didn't do that, nor will I. Go to module 5F, hit adaptations, then the two categories you want are "NHTSA_Properties" and "Locked menus." Change everything from "blocked" to "not blocked." There's about 25 of them, and the locked menus are in subcategories such as "FB_Media1" or "FB_Vehicle5" or FB_NAV2." Nothing bad happens. Cheers, Tom

Any updates on worthwhile things to do with OBDeleven?

It is driving me nuts that if I am on a phone call and nav speaks it can't be heard. I would love to find some modifications to change this behavior. I may play with the "gain" settings inside the multimedia section and see if i can figure something out. "Voice Operation for telephone.. Apple device" stock is "not installed"

Anyone have a full list of what can be done on the Golf R? I’ve seen the page on the OBDEleven website but also hearing about stuff beyond just that

Sorry for the old thread revival. It looks like the Mk8 doesn't have an active coding thread like the Mk7/6? Currently, I'm looking for coding comfort window closing with the remote but adaptations are not worded the same as the Mk7 so I was looking for someone to confirm which settings. Thanks.

  • I can close my trunk with my keyfob by holding the trunk button (it must be held until the trunk lid makes its initial latch).
  • The heated seats have been adjusted to the following: high/level three for five minutes (default was ten) then goes to level two for ten minutes (the factory coding left it in that mode), and finally goes to level one and stays there. I still cannot figure out how to set the heated seats to OFF once the ignition is turned off.
  • Massaging seat highest intensity has been set to 95%, the default was ~83%
  • No more seat belt chime
  • I haven't tested it yet, but the NAV entry warning "at speed" has been disabled
  • Hold lock button on keyfob and all windows (and sunroof) close. Hold unlock button and front windows (and sunroof) open.
  • Adaptive brake lights are enabled
  • Adjust the timer on the massaging seats, any entry over 600s produced an error - "out of range".
  • There weren't any options I could find to have the adaptive high-beams come on by default
  • Open and/or close trunk with driver's door button
  • Forget all HVAC setting when car is turned off, reset heated steering wheel (to off), reset heated seats (to off), etc.

The station is decorated with a large number of the picturesque cloths executed in style of socialist realism in fresco technique. The fresco ÂŤHoliday in KievÂť, made in 1953 was practically destroyed in 2010, due to an accident during nearby constructing works. While the fresco recovery, restorers revived its original appearance that had gone through many changes since its creation.

Ploshad Revolutsii

Famous dog at Ploshchad Revolyutsii Metro Station

The station was opened on March 13, 1938. The most interesting feature of the station is 76 bronze figures, situated in niches of 18 arches. This peculiar gallery of images of Soviet people, aimed to personify force and power of the country, its glorious past and bright future. One of the bronze sculptures — a dog that accompanies a frontier guard — is believed to bring good luck if you touch its nose.

The station’s decoration is devoted to development of agriculture in the USSR. Light marble and bas-reliefs by sculptor G. I. Motovilov decorate poles of the station. Famous smalt panel «Mothers of the World» by A. N. Kuznetsov is situated in the lobby.

Komsomolskaya

Mosaic panels from smalt and valuable stones, created according to sketches of the Lenin Award winner Pavel Corin, represent famous Russian commanders and weapons of different eras.

Novokuznetskaya

Roof mosaic at Novokuznetskaya Metro Station

The station was opened on November 20, 1943. Its name was originally written through a hyphen: ‘Novo-Kuznetskaya’. The interior of the station is rich with decorating elements. The idea of creative force and power of Soviet people, its remarkable victories in the Great Patriotic War found realization in architectural design of station. The perimeter of the escalator arch is decorated with bronze sculptures by the sculptor N.V.Tomsky.

Novoslobodskaya

Novoslobodskaya Metro Station

Novoslobodskaya station was opened on January 30, 1952. It was called after Novoslobodskaya street, where the station is situated. 32 original stained-glass windows from multi-colored glass, framed with steel and gilded brass and the famous mosaic panel ÂŤWorld peaceÂť, situated at the face wall the station, are made by sketches of Pavel Dmitriyevich Corin.

Dostoyevskaya

Portrait of Fyodor Dostoyevsky at Dostoyevskaya Metro Station

Dostoevskaya is comparatively new station, opened on June 19, 2010. It is situated at Suvorovskaya Square. Russian writer Fedor Dostoyevsky was born and lived in this district of Moscow. Therefore, the station bears his name and features scenes from his works «Crime and Punishment», «The Idiot», «Demons», «The Brothers Karamazov». Artist Ivan Nikolaev, the author of the decoration, said that depicting scenes of violence shows depth and tragedy of Dostoevsky’s work.

2. General information about Moscow metro

Metro working hours, navigation, wi-fi.

The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30 am until 1:00 am. The precise opening time varies at different stations according to the arrival of the first train, but all stations simultaneously close their entrances and transitions to other lines at 01:00 am for maintenance. The minimum interval between trains is 90 seconds during the morning and evening rush hours. Each line is identified according to an alphanumeric index (usually consisting of a number), a name and a color. Voice announcements in Russian refer to the lines by name and by numbers in English. A male voice announces the next station when traveling towards the center of the city or the clockwise direction on the circle line, and a female voice – when going away from the center or the counter-clockwise direction at the circle. The lines are also assigned specific colors for maps and signs.

Free Wi-Fi is called MT_FREE and available on all 14 lines (inside the trains).

Using Metro services is frequently the fastest and the most efficient way to get from one part of the city to another. But during daytime Moscow Metro stations are usually overcrowded so if you want to just enjoy the beauty of the underground, it’s better to visit it late in the evening.

MCC and MCD

Since 2016 The Moscow Metro is connected to two new types of rail transport. The first one is MCC – Moscow Central Circle. It has 31 stations around the city with changes to metro stations (most of them require to walk a few minutes via the street). The second one is MCD, Moscow Central Diameters, a system of city train services on existing commuter rail lines in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. MCD has several lines, they’re being marked as D1, D2 etc. Changing to both MCC and MCD from the Metro is free when your journey is within the city. Both MCC and MCD lines exist on all of the Moscow Metro maps.

Interesting facts about Moscow metro

213 people were born in the metro during the World War II, when it was used as a bomb shelter.

There are 76 bronze sculptures of workers, peasants, soldiers, sailors, etc. at Ploshchad Revolyutsii station. There is legend connected with this station. To pass any examination successfully, a student should touch the bronze dog’s nose («the Frontier Guard with a Dog» sculpture). You can easily understand high popularity of this legend by looking at the polished nose of the dog.

It is said that some of the magnificent mosaics at several central stations, for example the «World Peace» mosaic at Novoslobodskaya, were made with the pieces of enamel and smalt, taken from the famous Christ the Savior Cathedral, before it’s destruction.

As any other dungeon the Moscow metro, has its own ghosts. The most famous one is the old lineman. He is not dangerous and usually hides into the wall, when people appear. The ghostly metro train is much more dangerous. It appears after midnight at the Circle Line and consists of old-time carriages. It sometimes stops at the stations and opens its doors, and then goes back into the darkness. It is said that the souls of Stalin’s prisoners, perished during the building of the metro are locked in the train forever.

3. Moscow Metro tickets

1 or 2 trips.

You can buy tickets in ticket offices or in automatic ticket machines. Passes for 1 or 2 trips are the most expensive. They sold only in ATM and cost 55 and 110 rubles (€0.55 and €1.10) respectively.

More than 2 trips

All the other kinds of tickets are available in the ticket offices. Tickets for bigger amount of trips are more profitable.

ÂŤ90 MinutesÂť ticket

A ticket «90 minutes» is valid for one trip on the metro and an unlimited number of trips on surface transport within this time. It costs 65 rub (€0.65).

The ÂŤTroykaÂť card

You can also use «Troyka» – refillable card to pay for travelling on all kinds of public transport – metro, buses, trolley-buses, trams, monorail and blue minibuses. With «Troyka» one trip costs 35 rub (€0.35).

people walking through Red Square in Moscow

The most famous landmarks in Moscow—like Red Square (above), the Kremlin, Lenin’s mausoleum—all stand for the might of the state, and form the heart of the city.

Moscow: Opulent, Overwhelming, and Pulsing With Power

Living in Moscow can be terrifying and mesmerizing, says author.

MOSCOW — If Carl Sandburg’s Chicago was “ stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders ,” Moscow is “City of the Big Automobile”: tempestuous, loud-horned, insanely hurried, and engorged on wealth—only New York has more billionaires—highlighting Russia ’s status as a hydrocarbon-endowed erstwhile empire of fantastical dimensions. (You can jet eastward from Moscow nine and a half hours nonstop without leaving Russia.)

In a land where many acquired their apartments from the state, cars billboard social rank like nothing else. There is nothing subtle about this. Rich Muscovites shove their opulent rolling stock in your face. Drivers lord it over lesser beings plodding about on foot. For a long time, cars would honk as they approached intersections, rarely slowing down, and scattering pedestrians like chickens—or even, to bypass bottlenecks, swerving up onto the pavement. (In recent years, with stricter laws and higher fines, the roads and sidewalks have become safer, but barreling down streets the wrong way is still distressingly common.)

Drivers suffer, too: With all the traffic jams, getting from one end of the city to the other by car can take hours.

I’ve called Moscow home for the past 22 years. Even with the crisis in Ukraine , and Vladimir Putin’s ever more authoritarian rule, I haven’t seriously thought of leaving. I came of age here , started writing here, met my wife here, wrote three books about Russia here (and four others as well), witnessed armed conflict here, was robbed here (twice), and have been terrified here and mesmerized here.

In short, I found my life here and have few regrets. I visited first as a tourist in 1985 but settled for good in July 1993, fresh from the peripatetic adventure I’d undertaken for Siberian Dawn (my first book)—an 8,325-mile (13,398-kilometer) trek by truck, train, boat, and taxi from Magadan, on the frozen Sea of Okhotsk, across Siberia, southern Russia, and Ukraine to Poland.

people dancing in nightclub in Moscow

Sunday night is gay night at Propaganda, one of the city’s most popular clubs. Western economic sanctions haven’t slowed Muscovites down much.

Exhausted from my months-long wanderings, but enamored of Russian history, literature, and language, I settled in the capital at a chaotic time of anti- Yeltsin demonstrations, mass impoverishment (aka “free-market reforms”), mafiya shootouts, and, above all, threats of civil war that would end with the Kremlin sending tanks to shell reactionary opponents holed up in the parliament.

Power statement.

Moscow, I sensed then, was as it is now: pulsing with power and anarchic energy, always on the qui vive, the one place in Russia that mattered for the rest of the world. It’s no coincidence that its most famous landmarks—the Kremlin, Red Square, Lenin’s mausoleum—all stand for the might of the state, and form the heart of the city.

The main thoroughfares leading to them were conceived not for Ferraris and dolce vita –style frolicking but for T-90 tanks and military parades. Such parades embodied ambitions rooted in more than a thousand years of Eastern Christianity (and later transmuted into a zeal for messianic communism).

For centuries, after the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453, Orthodox believers, having lost their spiritual capital, looked to Moscow, as the sayings go, as “Guardian of the Faith” and as the “Third Rome, and a fourth there shall never be.” Russia’s sense of destiny has always intrigued me and anchored me here.

So in 1993 I rented, for just $150 a month, a cramped, one-room flat just off Novocheryomushkinskaya Street in a decent area in Moscow’s gritty, semi-industrialized southeast. The city was still mostly Soviet in exterior, dark in spirit, peopled by young and old angered by the collapse of the Soviet Union, by limitless ranks of corrupt police and officials, by grifters and fortune-seekers and woebegone pensioners.

Moscow rush hour from high up on Peking Hotel

Friday night rush hour as seen from the top of the Pekin Hotel demonstrates the truth of Jeffrey Tayler’s opinion that Moscow is the “City of the Big Automobile”: tempestuous, loud-horned, insanely hurried, and engorged on wealth.

Lonely, I wrote all day, consoling myself by gazing out my picture window onto a birch- and poplar-studded park, where leaves began turning gold in already chilly mid-August. (Summers were shorter then.)

The first anti-Yeltsin violence began in late September, and the shelling of the Supreme Soviet (the parliament left over from communist decades) came in early October, followed by a two-week, dusk-to-dawn curfew, automatic gunfire in the night, snipers haunting rooftops, cries to halt, and screams in the blackness outside my window. No sign yet of the transformative, glittering bacchanalia to come.

I kept my head down and worked on my book. Adjusting was difficult. I was born in Washington, D.C.; the often menacing, rawhide environs of Moscow intimidated me. Even without the threat of tank fire, the city can still have this effect, at least on newcomers.

Pride of the City

At rush hour, to enter the cheap but majestic, efficiently run metro in the center, you pass through the turnstile and are swept into a crowd thronging toward one of the three rapidly moving escalators. You ride down into an arch-ceilinged tunnel so long and deep that stations served as bomb shelters during WWII. Uniformed attendants at the bottom hector passengers through loudspeakers—“Take that purse off the handrail! You there, no running!” Until recent years, bloodied street bums and scar-faced drunks would take refuge from the weather on station platforms.

subway escalators in Moscow

Russians launched the first satellite, dog, and man into space, but ask Muscovites what they take the most pride in, Tayler writes, and chances are they’ll say the metro.

Yet the metro cars were, and still are, broader and cleaner than anywhere else I’ve been. Trains run every minute or two and rarely break down. Russians launched the first satellite, dog, and man into space, but ask Muscovites what they take the most pride in, and chances are they’ll say the metro.

Street life in Moscow has never been for the faint of heart. Construction work at times diverts pedestrians off the sidewalks into traffic. Speeding, honking motorcades carrying the president and other officials may disrupt traffic, with officers in accompanying police escort cars shouting at drivers through loudspeakers to clear the way, and fast! (Putin has taken to moving about by helicopter, or working at his residence outside the city, so this problem is diminishing.)

In times past, brigades of ill-tempered, scarved old women swept courtyards with stick brooms. Nowadays, this duty is performed by (generally cheerful) young immigrant Uzbeks and Tadzhiks, living reminders of the devastating invasions from the east seven centuries ago, and refugees from the poverty and repression still reigning in formerly Soviet Central Asia.

The migration has not gone down well with many Muscovites, and ethnically motivated riots have occasionally broken out. “Ponayekhali tut” (people have poured in from everywhere), Muscovites love to say. Once, they meant folks from the provinces, but now from almost anywhere in the old U.S.S.R.

Moscow’s north-central districts are more prosperous and habitable, so I eventually moved there, to an apartment between Belorussky Station and the Mayakovskaya metro station . Here, tranquil parks and playgrounds and Soviet-era buildings predominate, once prestigious but now outshined by new edifices elsewhere in town. (The Rublyovka area in Moscow’s west boasts some of the world’s highest-priced real estate.)

Tverskaya street with military guards

Army guards in Tverskaya Street stand ready to oversee the crowds at the Kremlin Zorya, the international military band performances on Red Square.

My change of address put me in close proximity to power: The Kremlin’s red-brick ramparts are just a half-hour walk down Tverskaya Street , which was once stately and imposing but these days is lined with trendy shops and tony restaurants.

Being in the center has had its downsides, though. The protests that erupted in 2011 after tainted elections to the State Duma hit my neighborhood hard. Riot troops arrived in transport trucks and parked just north of Triumfal’naya Square , where for several frigid December nights they clashed with furious crowds. I could hear sirens from my windows.

For Many Fleeing Venezuela’s Chaos, New Trouble in Brazil

Until not long ago, destitute homeless folk from the provinces managed to break open our building’s coded entrance door and pass the night in our stairwell. One day, just across the street, I passed a corpse in rags lying in the middle of the parking lot. No one paid it much mind.

The demonstrations have died out, but one day a year is anything but quiet here. On May 9, the Victory D ay parade passes near my building, proceeds down Tverskaya Street, and crosses Red Square, featuring nuclear missiles on trailers and rumbling tanks and goose-stepping platoons, just as in Soviet times. From my balcony I’ve watched jet fighters and bombers roar past in formation just above the rooftops. Muscovites hardly notice them. Fireworks, always spectacular, come in the evening; these, Muscovites do notice.

a woman tending to homeless man's injured leg in Moscoqw

Volunteer Tatyana Sveshnikova tends to a homeless man. Hundreds of the homeless freeze to death on city streets in the winter.

Cycle of the Seasons

The seasons dramatically affect life in the city. Fall and winter are now more clement, but they still can be rough on Muscovites, breeding a sort of cabin fever. But, in any case, summers always compensate.

Then, during the pink-orange gloaming of the lingering northern evenings, Moscow’s central boulevards become impromptu fashion runways, with wasp-waisted women on high heels striding along gracefully but assertively, often in the company of hulking young men. Groups of teens take advantage of the warmth and stand around in courtyards, drinking beer or vodka and smoking, shouting, and laughing, often until late.

a very fancy restaurant in Moscow

In the Turandot restaurant, musicians playing Mozart add a touch of tone to the glitzy scene. Conspicuous consumption has fueled Moscow's ascent into the ranks of the world's most expensive cities.

In my neighborhood, in the 1990s and 2000s, they were Russians; these days, they’re mostly Central Asians. Bars and restaurants, once frequently disturbed by drunken carousers, are now as civil as anywhere (and, with the ruble’s devaluation vis-à-vis the dollar, much less expensive, at least for hard-currency holders), and many offer dining outside on verandas.

Nevertheless, one of my steady haunts throughout the year is a friendly cafĂŠ restaurant many blocks south, Mayak , a favorite with actors, journalists, and the intelligentsia. No balcony there, but inside peals of laughter and moderate prices.

Whatever one thinks of Putin, Moscow has evolved and progressed during his 15 years at Russia’s helm. The 1990s phantasms of cataclysm and revolt have receded; even the Ukraine crisis has hardly ruffled the city.

More and more, in public places once dour Muscovites smile and treat one another with a politesse that was rare a decade ago. A new generation is growing up studying English and traveling abroad. The formerly ubiquitous rude Russian salesclerk is mostly gone, with affable warmth toward customers increasingly the rule.

a woman walking past a Dior store in Moscow Russia

A shopper scythes through bitter cold to get to a boutique on Red Square. Tayler, who has called Moscow home for 22 years, says the seasons dramatically affect life in the city.

Yet images from my trans-Russian odyssey of 1993 remain embedded in my mind, reminding me that Moscow is at once Russian yet not entirely representative of the rural, conservative hinterland beyond its bounds that stretches from the borders of Europe all the way to the Bering Strait.

To get a taste of this other Russia, I often visit the Tret’yakov Gallery . There, I lose myself in wonder before the paintings of Ilya Repin (in particular “ A Religious Procession in the Province of Kursk ”) and Isaak Levitan, whose landscapes (including “ Above the Eternal Peace ” and “ Golden Autumn ”) take me back to pastoral realms of soft light and slow-moving rivers, of onion-domed churches rising above birches and pines, of timeless peace.

But alongside these works hang others depicting the epochal tragedy of Russian history that has been, and remains, autocracy’s true legacy. Vasily Surikov’s “ Morning of the Streltsy Execution ” and “ Boyarynya Morozova ” come to mind. Both canvases show events relating to the rise of Peter the Great, the Moscow-born ruler who turned Russia from an obscure regional power into a continental power the world still has difficulty understanding and reckoning with. Winston Churchill summed up Russia as “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

If anyone, foreign or Russian, ever solves the enigma, he or she will do so in Moscow. Hence, I stay.

The Red Square, Kremlin and St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow at night Š Mordolff / Getty Images

One of the world’s largest cities, Moscow is a true metropolis whose ancient neighbourhoods are interspersed with newly built high-rises, inhabited by people from all over the former Soviet Union.

It’s also the city of rings: the innermost is the Kremlin itself; further away are the former defensive rings, Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring; still further are the Third Ring Road and the MKAD, which delineates the city’s borders. There’s an ongoing joke that Moscow Mayor is the Lord of the Rings. Most sights are contained within the Garden Ring, although for some more authentic neighbourhoods one has to venture further out. To help you explore Moscow’s diversity, we picked our favourite ’hoods – but this list is by no means exhaustive.

Evening view of Moscow's Red Square from the Kremlin towards St Basil's Cathedral

The Red Square and around

It can be argued that Moscow, or even the whole of Russia, starts at the  Red Square  – it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor. After standing in line to check out Lenin’s granite  mausoleum , go to GUM , Moscow's oldest department store. Full of luxury shops, it’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov. Apart from architectural wonders, GUM has several places to eat including the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 where you can sample mysterious-sounding delicacies such as the ‘herring in a fur coat’.

On the opposite side of GUM, Kremlin ’s walls and towers rise above the Red Square. Walk through the Alexander Garden  and past the grotto to the Kremlin’s entrance. It’s a treasure trove for any art and history lover: ancient gold-domed churches, icons galore and the resting place of Moscow tsars.

On the other side of the Red Square is Moscow's symbol,  St Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored domes. Right behind it is the newly built Zaryadye Park , which showcases flora from all over Russia; another attraction is the floating bridge jutting out above the embankment and the Moscow river. A glass pavilion nearby hosts Voskhod , a space-themed restaurant with dishes from all 15 former Soviet Union republics. It’s a perfect spot for a classy evening meal and there’s often live music.

People chilling out at a pond in central Moscow on a summer day

Patriarch’s Ponds

The Patriarch’s Ponds (aka Patriki) is a historical neighbourhood, celebrated in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita . Located right off Tverskaya street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare, Patriki recently became the city’s most happening quarter. It has some of the most elegant architecture, including several buildings by art-nouveau genius Fyodor Shekhtel. Narrow streets here have a cozy feel, with recently widened sidewalks and bike lanes. In the summer it becomes party central.

Start by checking out free exhibitions or one of the cutting-edge performances at the experimental theatre Praktika . But make no mistake, the neighbourhood’s main attraction are its bars and restaurants. Patriki’s residents are well-off Russians and expats, so it’s no wonder that  Moscow’s recent culinary revolution started here. Uilliam’s , one of the pioneers of this foodie movement, still rules over the scene with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Also try AQ Chicken  for everything chicken-related, Patara  for a taste of Georgian cuisine, and Cutfish for some great sushi. Finish your gastronomic tour with original cocktails at Pinch or the Moscow outpost of NYC restaurant Saxon+Parole .

Old red-brick buildings of the former Arma factory in Moscow

Around Kursky train station

For a long time, Kursky train station was surrounded by semi-abandoned factories and the area was best avoided. It all changed in the late 2000s, when a dilapidated wine factory was turned into Winzavod , a mecca for fans of contemporary art. Today these red-brick buildings are occupied by some of Moscow’s leading galleries. After taking in all the art, pop in the small wine bar Barrell  for a glass from burgeoning wineries of Russia’s south or grab a bite at Khitrye Lyudi  cafe.

Right next to Winzavod is Artplay , another refurbished factory full of design and furniture shops and large exhibition spaces.  It’s also home to  Pluton , one of the latest additions to Moscow’s dance scene. Other Pluton residents are the multimedia art gallery Proun  and another lunch option,  Shanhaika , with authentic Chinese cuisine.

A short walk away is Arma, where a cluster of circular gas holders has been turned into offices, restaurants and clubs including Gazgolder  (it belongs to one of Russia’s most famous rappers, Basta). Apart from hip-hop concerts, Gazgolder organises regular techno parties that sometimes go non-stop from Friday to Monday.

Colourful facade and onion-shaped domes of a Russian Orthodox church in Moscow

If you’re interested in religious architecture, Taganka is the place to go. First of all, see the old Moscow at Krutitskoye Podvorye – one of those places where nothing seems to have changed in centuries. The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but in the 16th century it became the home of Moscow metropolitans and most of the surviving buildings are from that epoch. Take a tour of the grounds, and don’t miss the interior and icons of the Assumption Cathedral.

Your next stop is the Rogozhskoe settlement of ‘old believers’, a branch that split from Russian Orthodoxy in the 17th century. The settlement is dominated by an 80m-tall bell tower. The yellow-coloured Intercession Church, built in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has an important collection of icons. Next to the church grounds is the popular Trapeznaya cafeteria, with Russian food cooked using traditional recipes – a perfect spot for lunch.

A short ride away is Andronikov Monastery, which today houses the Rublyov Museum  in the old monks’ quarters. There’s a great collection of ancient Orthodox icons although none by Andrei Rublyov, who was a monk here in the 15th century. The main attraction at the monastery is the small Saviour’s Cathedral, considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow.

Finish the day at the craft-beer cluster around Taganskaya metro station. Varka offers both Russian and imported labels, with the Burger Heroes stand serving arguably the best burgers in town. Craft & Draft looks more like a respectable old-fashioned pub, with decent food, 20 beers on tap and a hundred types of bottled brews.

Elaborate facade with statues and balcony on a mansion in Moscow

Khamovniki is Moscow’s ancient textile district, named after the word kham  (a type of cloth). Two main thoroughfares, Ostozhenka and Prechistenka, cut through the neighbourhood parallel to each other. The former turned into the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ of Moscow in the 1990s, with the highest real-estate prices and some of the best examples of new Russian architecture, while the latter is still mostly lined up with impressive 19th-century mansions.

Khamovniki is somewhat of a literary quarter, as several museums devoted to Russia’s best-known writers – among them  Leo Tolstoy , Alexander Pushkin  and Ivan Turgenev – popped up here during the last century. There’s also plenty to see for an art lover. The  Multimedia Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions by some of the best photographers from all over the world, as well as contemporary art. Several galleries, including RuArts  and Kournikova Gallery , have also found home in Khamovniki.

When you’ve had your fill of literature and art, stop by Gorod Sad on Ostozhenka, an outpost of a local health-food chain, and order dishes such as pumpkin soup or grilled vegetables salads. Afterwards, head to Dom 12 , which is located just off Ostozhenka street. This restaurant and wine bar is frequented by the city’s intellectuals and its schedule includes lectures, book presentations and film screenings, while in the summer guests migrate to a lovely courtyard.
