  STEP 1: Submit All Parts of the Common Application

The Common Application is a multipart process that includes submission of the Common Application, the Pepperdine Questions, and Pepperdine Writing Supplement. All parts must be submitted through the Common Application website. Be sure to review your Common App dashboard to ensure that all parts have been submitted successfully.

  STEP 2: Submit Official High School Transcripts

 official high school transcripts or official exam reports.

• Please include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit.
• Pepperdine is committed to ensuring all students are evaluated fairly, therefore transcripts from each high school attended must be sent directly to Pepperdine University for evaluation. Grades transferred or translated from a previous school onto a current transcript are not accepted. If your current high school is within the United States, the U.S. high school may submit a copy of the original official transcript they received from a previous school.
• If transcripts are not in English, English translations should be included.
• Students from educational systems with external exams (i.e. (I)GCSE/AS results, CBSE Board exams, etc.) should submit certified external exam results in addition to internal marks to finalize the high school transcript requirement.
• Students who have completed A levels must request the official exam results from the testing agency (i.e. CIE, Edexcel, AQA) to be sent directly to Pepperdine.
• Students who have completed an IB certificate of diploma, must request the official exam results from the IB organization (IBO) to finalize their high school transcript requirement and be considered for advanced standing credit.
• If applicable, students must submit official transcripts from any dual enrollment college.
• If your school official has already submitted your transcript via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. Instead, please verify that these items were submitted on the School Forms tab in the Common Application system.
• If an applicant is discovered to have falsified their academic documentation, Pepperdine University reserves the right to deny admission or dismiss the student from course study.

Please note that upon graduation, a final high school transcript must be submitted to ensure high school graduation has been achieved and for advanced standing credit evaluation.

  STEP 3: Submit Official SAT I or ACT Scores (Optional)

For the 2021-22 academic year, submission of SAT or ACT scores is optional for all international applicants, including US citizens who are completing their secondary education outside of the United States. Please note, this is an updated policy in response to the sharp decline of exams offered due to COVID-19 and is subject to change for future terms.

Although we do not require test scores, you have the option to submit either official test scores through the testing agency or self reported test scores through our test score form. Once your application has been processed, you will receive access to the Pepperdine Applicant Portal where you can access the test score form. If test scores are self-reported at the time of application, official test scores will be required upon admission to Pepperdine. Please note that self-reported test scores will only be accepted through Pepperdine's test score form. Test scores reported on the Common Application or transcripts will not be accepted.

If you choose to submit scores, the International Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. We will use the highest composite score from among each test that you've taken. This is called super scoring. There is no limit to the number of test scores you may submit to us for your application.

NOTE: When taking the SAT/ACT, if you have used a different name (e.g. nickname, middle name, etc.) or a different email address from the one used for your Common Application, you MUST notify our office by sending an email to [email protected] , so that your test scores are appropriately matched to your record..

  STEP 4: Submit One Academic Recommendation

The Academic Letter of Recommendation must be from a core subject (math, science, English, history, foreign language) teacher or counselor who is familiar with the applicant's academic standing.

Include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.

Ways to Submit Academic Letter of Recommendation

Option A: Pepperdine Recommendation Form Use this form to submit a request for your recommender to complete your recommendation.

If a recommender is going to submit a recommendation letter through the mail or a Pepperdine recommendation form, you are still required to "assign" and fill in the information on the Common Application. The information needed is the name of your recommender, title, and email address. Tell your recommender to ignore the Common App form, and we will manually link the recommendation letter (sent by mail or via a Pepperdine recommendation form) to your application file.

You must have all areas in the Common Application "assigned" in order to submit your application. Be aware that the "teacher" and "other recommender" both have to be assigned by you. If these recommenders have not been assigned, you will not be able to submit your application. The "other recommender" will not accept recommendations that are peer or family members.

Option B: Common Application Recommendation Form Once in the Common Application, select "My Colleges" in the left-hand menu, and then "Assign Recommenders." Enter the required information for the form. Please note: you will need your recommender's name, position title, email address, and work phone number to complete the form. Your recommender will then be contacted and invited to submit your recommendation through the Common Application system. If your recommender has already submitted your recommendation via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. Instead, please verify that these items were submitted on the School Forms tab in the Common Application system.

Please note: In order for Pepperdine to receive your recommendation, you must correctly assign your recommender to your Pepperdine application.

Option C: Hard Copy Letters We prefer that recommendations be submitted online using an option above. However, if you are unable to use our forms, written recommendations or traditional letters can be mailed to the address below. Please make sure that the person completing your recommendation includes your first name, last name, current school, city, and state. Include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.

  STEP 5: Submit Proof of English Proficiency

International first-year applicants must submit proof of English proficiency, which may be demonstrated by one of the following:

• SAT I Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 600 and above
• ACT Reading score of 24 and above
• TOEFL iBT (or TOEFL iBT Home Edition) score of 85 and above - *Please note that Pepperdine does not accept TOEFL "MyBest Scores" 
• C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency) of 186 and above
• Duolingo English Test score of 120 and above
• IELTS (or IELTS Indicator) overall score of 6.5 and above
• A "B" or better in a transferable English Composition course (not ESL) at an accredited US college or university
• A "C" or better on the UK system AS or A-Level English Exams (not ESL), or Hong Kong system HKALE English Exam
• The ELS Language Centers' Master level 112 class with a grade of B or higher

  STEP 6: English Proficiency Supplements - Optional

In order to further demonstrate English communication skills, international applicants may submit interviews from InitialView or Vericant.   STEP 7: Monitor Your Application and To-Do Lists

Monitor your application to-do lists via the Pepperdine Applicant Portal to verify that items have been received by the OISS. There will be a delay between submission of an item and reflection in your Applicant Portal to-do list. Do not send multiple copies of the same item. This will cause delay of processing your file. We recommend verifying on your Common Application account and with your school that all materials have been submitted in a timely manner. 

  STEP 8: F-1 Visa Application Process

Pepperdine University renders the I-20 after students accept their offer of admission by submitting their Enrollment Form and Tuition Prepayment (Deposit). Please refer to the ISD form on our International Student Portal for further information regarding obtaining your Pepperdine I-20.

Pepperdine University is a private research Christian university near Malibu, California. There are over 40 areas of study for undergraduates to pursue, including two certificates. The largest academic divisions for undergraduates include business, communication, social science and natural science. Over half of Pepperdine students study abroad at some point. 

Outside of the classroom, there are 14 Division I sports, and the Volunteer Center offers extensive opportunities for students to participate in service. 

In the 2018-2019 admissions cycle, Pepperdine received 13,721 applications and admitted 4,241 students for an acceptance rate of 31%. This is essentially a “why this school” essay, but with an emphasis on the religious aspects of the school. To write this essay, you’ll need to have a grasp on how your own faith fits into your life so that you can discuss what you’ll bring to Pepperdine.

The first part of this prompt, however, is much simpler: why are you interested in attending Pepperdine? The more specific you are, the more genuine your interest seems. The best way to do this is to find a few aspects of Pepperdine that appeal to you, like programs and clubs, and describe why those are important to you. 

For example: 

• Your involvement with your church at home might lead you to want to continue that kind of work at college, and the Student-Led Ministry Service would appeal to you. 
• If you’re passionate about filmmaking—and maybe incorporating your faith with your film—you might be interested in the Sundance IGNITE club, where you can learn how to prepare for a career in film. 
• Students interested in pursuing a career in law might be interested in the Certificate in Conflict Management, where they could enroll in courses in Pepperdine’s law schools to supplement their undergraduate classes. 

You’ll have to do some research into Pepperdine to find those specific programs—whether academic or not–that interest you. If possible, try to incorporate your faith into at least one of these programs, like the Student-Led Ministries, since the prompt specifically notes that Pepperdine is a Christian university. 

The second half of the prompt is how you’ll contribute to conversations of faith on campus. This is a little more complicated, but there are several ways you could think about it. 

• What unique religious experiences have you gone through that caused the development of your perspectives? Did you turn to faith after some sort of trauma, like a death in the family or a serious injury? Did you travel to a place where you had the opportunity to delve deep into your connection to religion?
• Do you have some unique way of practicing your religion? Pepperdine is a Christian university, but perhaps you feel that you can better understand Christianity by learning about and engaging with other religions. 
• Maybe you’re fairly new to religion and still questioning and challenging—your contributions to conversations might be very different from that of other students, but you would be able to push people to think about things in a way they hadn’t before.
• You might not be a Christian at all, but your experiences with a different religion might allow you to engage in more thoughtful conversations about the differences in faiths and beliefs. 

Overall, the way you contribute to conversations of faith is really a commentary on how your faith is a part of you. It’s how you think about or practice your faith. You can also refer back to the programs and groups at Pepperdine that appeal to you. There, you could bring your own personal faith and beliefs to the student body. By pointing that out, Pepperdine can see that you’ve thought about how to combine your faith with your life on campus. 

The ultimate point of this essay is to show to Pepperdine that you are genuinely interested in the school, and have put some thought into how your faith will fit in with the Pepperdine community at large. You’ll accomplish this by pointing out specific details about both Pepperdine and your unique perspective on faith, which will show us how you plan to find your place at the school. 

 A liberal arts education challenges you to think critically, reflect purposefully, and broaden perceptions. Describe ways in which you seek to step outside of your comfort zone and challenge the worldviews you hold. (50-300 words)

Stepping out of your comfort zone can mean a lot of things to different people—you could literally be stepping out of your comfort zone by going somewhere or doing something you’ve never done before. You could also mentally and emotionally step outside of your comfort zone, by confronting fears or thinking about something you haven’t wanted to think about before. 

The best way to write this essay would be to tell a story. Show us you stepping outside of your comfort zone and challenging your own beliefs. Telling us this story will allow you describe how you push your comfort zone. Here are some examples: 

• You might not be a particularly athletic person, but you decided to try out for your local basketball team. Even though you had always felt like someone had to be inherently athletic, you were able to practice and learn until you were proud of your achievements. 
• For someone who isn’t very comfortable in social situations, stepping out of their comfort zone might involve making an effort to join new clubs at school and having conversations with strangers. 

The more description and detail you can offer in this story, the better we can see how you leave your comfort zone and try something new. Discuss what you did to step outside of your comfort zone—like joining a sport or a new club, and then how it changed you—like learning how to play a sport, or becoming more comfortable talking to strangers. 

It’s important that we not only see the literal change, but also the emotional and mental changes. Did becoming comfortable talking to strangers help you be more comfortable with yourself? Did learning how to play a sport help you gain self-confidence in your abilities? Let us see all of the positive ways this impacted you.

Pepperdine University has released its 2021-2022 essay prompt. Applicants to Pepperdine’s Class of 2026 are asked to answer a 500-word prompt that reads, “Pepperdine is a Christian university where all are welcomed and encouraged to challenge each other in the pursuit of truth. Students, faculty, and staff members from all backgrounds participate in conversations of faith inside and outside of the classroom. Considering that Pepperdine is a Christian university, why are you interested in attending and how would you contribute to conversations of faith on campus?”

So, basically, it’s a Why College essay with a dollop of faith. Because, yes, faith is an important component of a Pepperdine education and the admissions committee wants to know that you wish to attend Pepperdine for the right reasons. But do keep in mind that one does not need to be of the Christian faith to earn admission to Pepperdine and, in fact, Pepperdine’s admissions committee seeks to admit students of the Jewish faith and the Muslim faith as well. They just want to see that you appreciate a faith-based education irrespective of your own personal faith.

How to write the pepperdine supplement essay, school supplements.

The Pepperdine essay supplement asks you to dig into something very personal: your relationship with faith and religion. In concert with your Common Application essay , it's a great way to show that you belong at this university. 

Pepperdine is a Christian university where all are welcomed and encouraged to challenge each other in the pursuit of truth. Students, faculty, and staff members from all backgrounds participate in conversations of faith inside and outside of the classroom. Considering that Pepperdine is a Christian university, why are you interested in attending and how would you contribute to conversations of faith on campus? (300 - 500 words ) 

Exploring Faith

If your Christian faith is important to you, don't hesitate to talk about it in a straightforward way. Admissions readers will appreciate knowing that your values align with those of the school. However, you shouldn't assume that being Christian is enough! Make sure you research specific ways that you could join "conversations of faith" at Pepperdine.

• First, think about how you engage in conversations of faith already. Do you participate in works-based ministries? Do you write poems or songs exploring your faith? Perhaps you have thought deeply about balancing your scientific research interests with religion.
• Then, think about ways you might want to engage in these conversations going forward. As you brainstorm, try exploring Pepperdine’s website. Look for opportunities that interest you, and take notes! For example, you might be interested in exploring faith in the classroom through the unique Faith and Vocation minor, participating in faith-based extracurriculars like the Campus Ministry, or attending the Convocation Series.

But what if you’re not religious, or not Christian? What’s the best way to tackle the Pepperdine supplement essay?

Your goal here should be to show why a Christian university would be a beneficial environment for you, while demonstrating that you can treat the religious beliefs of others with respect.

• First, think about an experience where you reflected on faith or learned about it. For example, maybe you had a friendly debate with a religious friend that gave you a new perspective. Or maybe you love history and you’re fascinated by the role of faith in historical conflicts.
• Then, research how you might engage in conversations of faith at Pepperdine as a non-Christian. For example, maybe you’re looking forward to joining the Interfaith Student Council to foster an inclusive community.

Choosing a Structure

The Pepperdine supplement essay has a flexible word count, so a variety of different structures will work. If you have a particularly powerful story to tell about a "conversation of faith," you might want to take the full 500 words and utilize the Journey structure.

However, for most students, a more straightforward structure will be appropriate.

• Start by summarizing your answer to the prompt. For example: "As a _____ who ____, I know that Pepperdine's faith-based environment will allow me to _____."
• Move on to describing how you are already engaging in "conversations of faith."
• Then, take advantage of your research to talk about the specific ways you will participate in "conversations of faith" on campus.
• If you have room, finish by imagining your future self, at Pepperdine and beyond, enriched and empowered by "conversations of faith."
