How to Start a House Painting Business in India?

Starting a house painting business in India offers a colourful pathway to becoming your own boss. With the real estate market booming, there’s never been a better time to dive into this vibrant industry. It’s not just about having a knack for colours; it’s about turning that passion into profit.

You’re probably wondering where to begin. From understanding the market dynamics to acquiring the right tools and skills, starting your painting venture requires a well-thought-out plan. Let’s brush up on the essentials and lay the foundation for a successful house painting business in India.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Researching the market dynamics.

Before diving into the colourful world of house painting, understanding the market dynamics is crucial for turning your business ideas into successful ventures. The real estate boom in India presents numerous business opportunities, especially in the house painting sector. However, discerning the potential return on investment (ROI) and the initial outlay required is pivotal.

Analyzing ROI

The ROI in a house painting business can be quite appealing. Typically, the profit margin can range significantly depending on several factors such as the area you operate in, the quality of services you offer, and how well you manage your expenses. To ensure a favourable ROI, you’ll need to focus on offering exceptional service, smart marketing, and efficient operations.

Initial Investment Required in INR

Starting a house painting business doesn’t require a hefty initial investment, making it an attractive option for many budding entrepreneurs. Here’s a rough breakdown:

Choosing the Right Area

Selecting the right area to start your business will heavily influence your success. Urban regions with growing residential projects offer vast opportunities. Meanwhile, focusing on areas with older homes could provide a consistent demand for repainting services. Conducting detailed market research in your chosen area helps identify your target market and competition level, bringing you one step closer to launching a successful house painting business.

Remember, each step you take towards understanding market dynamics fuels your journey to start a business with a strong foundation.

Acquiring the Right Tools and Equipment

When you’re diving into the world of business opportunities, especially within the house painting sector, having the right set of tools and equipment is paramount. This step isn’t just about filling your inventory; it’s an investment in your business’s efficiency and the quality of service you offer.

Firstly, a comprehensive list of essential painting tools will set the foundation. This typically includes ladders, brushes, rollers, paint trays, and drop cloths. Yet, to differentiate your service and tackle a variety of projects, investing in power tools such as sprayers and power washers might be necessary. Not only do these tools save time, but they also ensure a flawless finish, which in turn, can significantly boost your business’s reputation.

Initial Investment in Tools

While the investment in high-quality tools may seem steep initially, it’s crucial for your business’s long-term ROI. Here’s a rough estimate of the initial investment required for basic and advanced painting equipment:

Remember, selecting the right equipment is not just about purchasing; it’s about strategic investment. Opt for durable, versatile tools that can handle various projects. This approach not only enhances your operational efficiency but also minimizes future expenditures on repair and replacement.

Moreover, exploring business ideas within the house painting sector in different areas can greatly influence your tools selection. Urban regions with contemporary residential projects might necessitate advanced painting techniques, whereas rural or older urban areas might often require more preparation and repair tools.

Developing Essential Painting Skills

Starting your house painting business in India not only presents exciting business opportunities but also requires you to refine and develop your painting skills. Mastering the technical aspects of painting and understanding the nuances of different surfaces and materials are crucial to your success and can significantly impact your ROI.

Firstly, investing in a comprehensive training program or apprenticeship can propel your business forward. The investment required for such training varies but expect to spend around INR 20,000 to INR 50,000 depending on the depth and length of the program. This initial investment in your skills ensures you provide quality services, which is essential in areas with high competition.

Practical experience is also invaluable. You might start small, taking on minor projects in your locality to gain experience. This hands-on approach allows you to understand various aspects of the business, from client management to on-site problem solving.

Incorporating the following skills is essential:

  • Surface preparation : Including sanding, patching, and priming.
  • Paint application techniques : Brush, roller, and sprayer methods.
  • Understanding of materials : Knowing the best paints and finishes for different environments.

By focusing on these areas, you lay a solid foundation for your house painting business, ensuring you’re well-prepared to take on projects of varying complexities. Remember, the quality of your work speaks volumes and can open doors to new business opportunities across India.

Establishing a Business Plan

Creating a robust business plan is a critical step when you’re looking to start a house painting business in India. This plan not only sets the foundation for your venture but also attracts investors and guides you through the initial stages of your business. A thorough business plan covers various aspects such as ROI, initial investment, market analysis, and operational planning.

Initial Investment and ROI

Before jumping into the painting business, you’ll need to determine the initial investment required. This investment covers equipment, materials, licensing, and marketing expenses. In India, starting a small-scale house painting business can require an initial investment of:

Your ROI (Return on Investment) hinges on your business model, service quality, and marketing strategies. Generally, with quality work and solid marketing, you can expect to start seeing profits within the first year.

Deciding the Area of Operation

Considering the vastness of India and its diverse housing styles, selecting the right area of operation is pivotal. Urban areas offer more business opportunities due to higher demand but also present stiffer competition. On the other hand, rural areas might have less competition but require extensive travel. Analyzing your local market will help you choose the best area to start your house painting business.

Remember, whether you’re seeking lucrative business ideas or exploring various business opportunities , laying out a detailed business plan is your first step to start a business successfully. Understanding your initial investment, projecting your ROI, and choosing your area of operation are crucial components of your planning process.

Promoting Your Painting Venture

After setting up the foundation of your house painting business, it’s time to dive into the world of marketing to harness business opportunities . Your promotional strategies are critical in positioning your venture in the competitive market and securing a profitable ROI.

Initially, invest in a robust digital presence . Creating a user-friendly website highlighting your services, portfolio, and customer testimonials can set you apart. Leverage social media platforms to connect with your target audience, share before and after project photos, and engage with potential customers. Remember, digital marketing is both cost-effective and broad-reaching, making it an essential tool in your promotional arsenal.

Consider local advertising methods as well, like distributing flyers in neighbourhoods, partnering with local hardware stores, or sponsoring community events. These strategies not only provide direct contact with potential clients but also establish your presence within the community.

Your promotion’s success directly impacts your ROI . The more efficiently you can attract and convert leads, the higher your returns will be. Keep a close eye on your marketing expenses and the quality of leads generated to ensure you’re investing wisely. Budget allocation towards marketing in your initial business plan should be strategic, aiming to maximize visibility and credibility without draining resources.

Engaging in SEO to enhance your website’s visibility on search engines is another key strategy. Incorporate relevant keywords, like “ business ideas ” and “ start a business ,” into your website content to attract organic traffic and increase your business’ online findability.

By tactically promoting your painting business and maximising the use of digital platforms alongside traditional methods, you’ll not only capture business opportunities but also pave the way for a sustainable and profitable venture.

Embarking on your journey to start a house painting business in India requires more than just an eye for colour and a steady hand. It’s about strategically positioning your business in the market and leveraging both digital and traditional marketing methods to attract and retain customers. By establishing a strong digital presence and engaging with your local community, you’re laying down the foundations for a sustainable and profitable venture. Remember to keep a close eye on your marketing expenses and the quality of leads you’re generating. With the right approach to promotion, you’re not just painting houses; you’re crafting a successful business story. How does a painting business make money?

A painting business typically makes money by charging clients for their services. One target audience for this type of business could be homeowners who want to upgrade the interior of their homes. They might hire the business to paint their entire house, or maybe just a few rooms. Businesses with commercial properties may also use such services to refresh the look of their offices and retail spaces. Restaurant owners may be another target audience, as they may need to have decorations and paints that match the overall restaurant atmosphere.

Creating a distinctive painting brand is a pivotal step in setting your business apart from the competition. It involves crafting a unique identity that resonates with your target audience and reflects the quality and style of your services. Consider the following tips to build a strong brand for your painting business:

  • Define Your Brand Personality: Decide on the personality and tone of your brand. Whether it's professional, creative, friendly, or luxurious, ensure that it aligns with your target clientele and differentiates you from competitors.
  • Choose a Memorable Name and Logo: Your business name and logo are often the first things potential customers will notice. Select a name that is easy to remember and a logo that is simple yet impactful, making sure both are a good fit for your brand persona.
  • Establish Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Determine what makes your painting service special. It could be your eco-friendly materials, exceptional craftsmanship, or unique color consultation process. Highlight this USP in your marketing efforts.
  • Create a Consistent Visual Theme: Use consistent colors, fonts, and imagery across all marketing materials, your website, and social media platforms. This consistency helps in building brand recognition and trust with potential customers.
  • Engage with Your Audience: Develop a voice for your brand that speaks directly to your customers. Engage with them through social media, content marketing, and customer service to foster a community around your brand.

How to come up with a name for your painting business?

Naming your painting business can be an exciting yet daunting task. You want the name to be creative and reflect the essence of your business while still being professional. One way to come up with a name is to create a list of words that represent what you do and then combine them together to make something unique. Another idea is to use a play on words, such as adding “Painting” or “Artist” after a punny phrase. Once you have selected your name, it is important to do research on the internet to ensure it is not too similar another business out there. Lastly, be sure the name is easy for potential clients to remember so they can find you easier in their searches.

  • Offer pricing structures: Develop various pricing options such as per square foot, per room, or a flat rate for certain services to accommodate different customer needs.
  • Include value-added services: If you offer unique services like color consultation or eco-friendly paints, consider these as premium services in your pricing.

Industry Analysis

The residential painting industry provides painting services to recolor houses and apartments. This market is typically segmented into interior house painting and exterior house painting services. The market can be further segmented into painting services for new homes vs repainting services. Painting businesses can stand out in the market by providing all of these services.

In recent years, the market has been negatively affected by COVID. Many people lost their jobs, so they did not have the extra income needed to spend on painting or other contractor work. However, the industry has been making a comeback since the pandemic ended. The unemployment rate has lowered significantly, meaning many people have disposable income for contractor services again. Furthermore, the housing boom in 2021 has led to many new homeowners needing painting and other contracting services. As such, there is a large demand for residential painting services once again.

O’Reilly Brothers House Painting will face competition from other companies with similar business profiles. A description of each competitor company is below.

This company helps offices and other establishments update their spaces by providing repainting and other interior design services. They have many loyal clients and showcase a large gallery of previous projects on their social media. Many businesses have sworn by Riverside’s services, and the company’s reputation has skyrocketed simply through word-of-mouth marketing.

River City Painting Inc.

Painting And More has achieved this goal, as the company is consistently given positive reviews and is usually the first painting service residents think of when they need a painting job done. Painting businesses are often funded through small business loans. Personal savings, credit card financing and angel investors are also popular forms of funding.

What are the Steps To Start a Painting Business?

Starting a painting business can be an exciting endeavor. Having a clear roadmap of the steps to start a business will help you stay focused on your goals and get started faster.

1. Develop A Painting Business Plan - The first step in starting a business is to create a detailed painting business plan that outlines all aspects of the venture. This should include potential market size and target customers, the services or products you will offer, pricing strategies and a detailed financial forecast.

2. Choose Your Legal Structure - It's important to select an appropriate legal entity for your painting business. This could be a limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks so it’s important to do research and choose wisely so that your painting business is in compliance with local laws.

3. Register Your Painting Business - Once you have chosen a legal structure, the next step is to register your painting business with the government or state where you’re operating from. This includes obtaining licenses and permits as required by federal, state, and local laws.

4. Identify Financing Options - It’s likely that you’ll need some capital to start your painting business, so take some time to identify what financing options are available such as bank loans, investor funding, grants, or crowdfunding platforms.

5. Choose a Location - Whether you plan on operating out of a physical location or not, you should always have an idea of where you’ll be based should it become necessary in the future as well as what kind of space would be suitable for your operations.

6. Hire Employees - There are several ways to find qualified employees including job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed as well as hiring agencies if needed – depending on what type of employees you need it might also be more effective to reach out directly through networking events.

7. Acquire Necessary Painting Equipment & Supplies - In order to start your painting business, you'll need to purchase all of the necessary equipment and supplies to run a successful operation.

8. Market & Promote Your Business - Once you have all the necessary pieces in place, it’s time to start promoting and marketing your painting business. This includes creating a website, utilizing social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, and having an effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. You should also consider traditional marketing techniques such as radio or print advertising.

Creative Ideas to Start a Painting Business in India

Business of wall painting process step by step in india.

The first thing to do is think about your thoughts and reflect on your talents. Think about what you have learned about painting. Do some preliminary work on your walls to test your skills and make some corrections based on your feedback.

Even if your skills are excellent in painting, you should consider a formal course in painting. You can also take an internship to develop your skills and understand how a painting business runs. If you don’t have any experience in painting, then you should concentrate on the most important elements like:

  • Learn to promote your expertise in the marketplace.
  • Painting on different platforms such as canvas walls, wallpapers, artistic pillars, etc.
  • Find out the secrets of special effects to make the painting appear professional.
  • Learn to mix colours to get the best results through doing experiments.
  • Develop special capabilities to compete against others.

A professional painting class can do all of this for you. So, make sure you sign up for an art course that you like unless you are looking to be your guru to earn high profits.

1) Choose Your Field of Expertise and Create an Outline of Your Business Plan

There are various methods and techniques for painting that you can experiment with based on the area of specialisation. Many common painters can be hired without or with no skills when looking at a regular painting in a house.

Artists can also be hired who specialise in their area of art, such as:

  • Mural Painting: It’s a form of art directly affixed to the ceiling, wall or any other permanent surface. The artwork is painted on large canvases that you can hang on the wall. You can also paint them directly on the walls.

2) Create a Plan

You must develop the plan for your painting business once you’ve mastered the professional expertise. It is essential to begin your painting business in a department where you can master your skills by gaining knowledge.

For instance, if you’re an expert in a particular kind of painting, then your business needs to be focused on more than just painting. Also, you must plan the marketing necessary to launch your business.

3) Design Your Talking Points

It is also important to consider the kind of promotional materials your sales pitch will include in terms of information. Why should a potential customer choose your business over other options?

Build out a diagnostic sales strategy focused on educating your client on the ways your painting business differs from the typical painting contractor. Guarantees, customer reviews, warranties and screening of the painter should be at the forefront of your sales pitch so that your client is aware of how they’re reducing risk and getting the most value out of your business. Now, let’s know which equipment is necessary to buy.

4) Paint Equipment to Buy

If you are a professional, you must have all the most modern equipment to begin your painting business in India. If you have a tight budget, you can afford all the required equipment, including window trolleys, brush sets, stools, ladders, etc.

Do not compromise on the quality of your paint material. If you can afford it, look into a new painting method. You can include this using computer programs and painting various materials using spray painting equipment, etc. If you lack financial support in the paint business, there are two effective ways to overcome it. You can either look for a partnership or look through the best government loans in India .

5) Register Your Company

A registered business that has the name of a brand offers many benefits. Art pieces can positively impact when you’ve created the brand you want to be. You can build your brand by naming your company or the art style you sell.

The registration of your business can aid in the business process since your company will grow.

6). Find Worthy Partners

In terms of actually getting clients, we suggest locating the nearby businesses that are most popular with your prospective customers.

You need to get on the top 100 list of influential people within your local community to help with lead generation and referrals.

Consider targeting the most successful commercial realtors, property managers and B2B service firms such as gutter installation, roofers, flooring contractors, etc. Make your list as small as 100, and stay in touch with them via mail, texts, email or social media, in-person visits or networking. Be sure to adhere to a buy-or-die stance.

7) Establish the Shop

Setting up your own painting business is a lot of work. It would help if you met people who share your interests and are also involved in this industry. It is essential to build your network of people in the business. At first, you might have to offer your work at a cheaper cost. If you focus on starting the income, you may even have to work on a project or two for somebody else.

It is essential to create your own painting business to advertise yourself and create an image for your painting business name that customers will remember for its high quality and efficiency.

8) Your Presence Through Social Media

Social media users are always eager to search for items they enjoy, and they are tagged with them. There are numerous sites on Facebook and Twitter adored by users worldwide who are focused on something different and fascinating to the masses.

You can also create your profile with your company name on various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc. and share photos of your painting projects. In short, you need to show off the charming rooms you’ve painted and convert anybody who is half-planned about getting a home painted.

You can also include specifics about your painting expertise and offer discounts if somebody wants to get four-plus rooms painted.

Being in direct contact with your client is among the most effective ways to grow your business, as it creates confidence in the customers in your service.

Word of mouth is the most reliable method of advertising that works extremely quickly from one individual to the next.

Considering the “less investment and more income” factor, starting a painting business seems a very appealing business idea. Most importantly, you don’t face a lot of hassle as you do with many similar business ideas.

You don’t need any heavy investment either. Once you get your painting business up and running, you can advertise in various ways and expect quick customers. What Is a Business Plan?

A painting business plan is a document detailing how to start a painting company, the business goals, services, and how the contractor plans to reach their goals.

painting business plan example

Along with focusing on your painting company’s goals, it’s helpful to include other information, such as the painting services you plan to offer, your process for how to bid a paint job , and any competitive differentiators that set up a part in the local market.

Think of your business plan as a written outline about your painting company startup that you can share with other individuals, companies, or investors who want to join your business venture.

It is essentially a pitch about why someone would want to be involved with your painting company and how it will benefit them by detailing everything from team structure to financial projections.

Sections of a Painting Business Plan

Remember that as the business owner, you get to decide what to and what not to include in your painting business plan. If a section doesn’t make sense for your business or aligns with your growth goals, don’t feel forced to leave it in.

Determine which sections make the most sense for your painting company’s needs. To create a comprehensive business plan, consider including the following sections:

1. Executive Summary

At the beginning of the business plan, you want to provide a short summary of who your painting business is and why it will be successful.

  • This is where you would provide any company details you have, including your painting company mission statement, leadership team, employees, location(s), service area, and any other basic business details.

2. Company Description

Here you will outline who your painting company is and discuss your purpose.

  • What problems do you help your customers solve?
  • What makes you stand out from similar competitors in the market?
  • What expertise and training does your team of painting contractors have?

Use the company description section as a place to brag about yourself a little bit and highlight what makes your painting business stand out from others.

3. Market Analysis

Anyone can say they will become a painting contractor , but you need the numbers to back up that claim. Analyzing your local market and performing competitor research will help uncover your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses.

In doing so, you can determine where you need to excel and how your painting company can outshine the competition. Determine what they are doing well, what they are struggling with, and what you can do better.

4. Organizational Structure

Having a clearly defined organizational structure ( 1 ) is a crucial aspect of any business — especially if you are looking to get funding or investments.

  • Create an org chart that outlines the company structure, detailing who is in charge of all business operations down to the painting contractors who are out in the field executing the job.

5. Painting Services

Provide a menu of service offerings that you plan to offer to your customers.

  • Do you plan to offer residential painting? If so, are you focusing on new development jobs led by contractors, or are you appealing to the homeowner crowd?
  • Will you bid on commercial painting leads?
  • Do you only offer single-room paint jobs or whole-home jobs as well?
  • Is your team equipped to handle interior and exterior paint jobs?

Use this section to outline your service offerings and explain how they will benefit your target customer base.

6. Marketing and Sales

While your painting company’s marketing strategy should be fluid to align with the current market, this section will describe your high-level plan for attracting new business and retaining existing customers when word of mouth alone isn’t sufficient.

  • What is your plan to increase the leads coming in?
  • How do you plan to close those leads and convert them into customers?
  • Is there a strategy to make your existing sales repeat customers?

Provide an insight into the traditional marketing and digital marketing strategies you plan to employ.

7. Funding Request

If you are asking for funding or plan to in the future, you will need to provide an outline of your funding requirements. Explain how much money you are requesting and details on how those funds will be distributed and used over the next few years.

8. Financial Projections

Including financial projections for your painting company is an effective way to demonstrate that your business will succeed.

If you are an established company, you can fill out this section with existing financial statements or cash flow statements for the last few years to demonstrate your painting company’s profitability .

  • Use this section to forecast where you expect the company to be financially five years from now.
  • It can be helpful to break up your projections by quarters so you can easily determine if you are on track to meet your projections.
  • Include revenue projections and expenses such as insurance, advertising, taxes, property leases, etc.

9. Appendix

At the end of your painting business plan, you should add any supporting documents for the information you’ve provided. This can include resumes for your leadership team, licenses, credit histories or bank statements, and other contracts.

Does My Painting Company Need a Business Plan?

Starting a company in the painting trade is an exciting process — but it often comes with a lot of headaches. Even though you may want to dive right in, it’s vital to set up your business for success from day one.

Creating a solid business plan is one of the most effective ways to prepare your business for any challenges or obstacles you face.

While a business plan isn’t necessarily a mandatory requirement, it is a step that shouldn’t be glossed over.

  • It’s a valuable tool that you and your leadership team can continue to use to stay focused and on track toward your painting company’s goals.
  • Not only does a painting company business plan make your vision clear to yourself, as well as possible investors, but provides many additional benefits as well:

Business Growth

Every successful painting company starts with a good foundation. Diving in without a well-thought-out plan might be okay initially, but without concrete revenue goals and essential business details sorted out, you’re doing your painting business a disservice.

  • Creating the core strategy of your painting company will help accelerate your growth because you will have clear benchmarks that need to be met.
  • If you aren’t meeting these benchmarks, you’ll know that your business plan might need to be adjusted.

And on the other hand, you might surpass these benchmarks and be able to reach your goals more quickly because of the clear path you laid out for yourself. Taking the time to create a painting business plan ensures you have a roadmap to success.

Depending on the growth goals you have for your new painting venture, you may need additional funding to achieve them.

  • By creating a solid business plan for your painting company, you’re demonstrating to investors and loan providers that you understand the growth trajectory of your business.
  • No investor or loan provider will want to invest in a business that isn’t financially stable.
  • Writing up a business plan allows you to share your ideas and goals for your painting company.

Business Decisions

As a business owner, you need to be able to make essential business decisions. Whether dealing with a significant fluctuation in painting leads or facing a labor shortage, you must be prepared to deal with situations even when you have little prior experience.

  • A business plan enables you to make strategic business decisions because you will know your most recent forecasting information and trajectory toward your goals.
  • You can be a confident owner of a painting business, knowing that you have a solid business plan in place to back up your decision-making.

WHY YOU NEED A BUSINESS PLAN FOR YOUR PAINTING COMPANY

Time spent thinking strategically about all aspects of your painting business will help you save time and money—and increase your chances for success.

Sample business plan.

Q: “Why Do I Need a Business Plan to Start a Painting Company?”

Business plan sections:.

  • Executive Summary: This first section should describe the core of what your company is, its mission, what you’re selling, your business objectives and how you will measure success and eventually grow. You can dive deeper into this initial thinking in our guide to naming your painting business .
  • Company Description: This section should provide detailed information about your company: Who owns it? Where is it located? Do you have employees? What problem will your company solve? Do you have any competitive advantages? Who will your customers be?
  • Services Offered: Beyond painting interiors and exteriors, what specialty services do you offer? Is there a particular skill set or specialized focus worthy of promoting that can differentiate your business? “Consider a specialty like decorative, decks, restoration, plaster repair. There's less competition, so you can stand out more,” explains Tony Severino of Professional Painters in La Grange, Illinois. “A specialty of ours is painting kitchen cabinets, and people will pass our name around for that.
  • Competitive Market Analysis: Learning about your immediate market is an ongoing endeavor. Consider these questions: Who are your main competitors, and roughly how much business do they handle? How are you different from, and hopefully better than, them? Do you see any market themes or trends? Where is there an unmet need in your market that you can fill?
  • Strategy and Implementation Summary: This section explains how you will deliver the services you’ve outlined above. How will you roll out your services for launch? How will you attract business to your new company? How will you execute on that work?
  • Management Summary and Staffing: In this section, don’t worry about years down the road—focus on what you need now to get off the ground. If you haven’t already, this is a good time to decide whether your business structure will be classified as an LLC, an S-corporation or a partnership. Are you doing all the work yourself for the time being? Do you have a business partner or a family member or friend who’s helping you out? Do you have subcontractors you’ll bring in and manage or part-time or full-time employees you’ll hire to help run your small business?
  • Financial Plan and Growth: Being prepared is key to maximizing your success. Consider the following: What will it cost to launch your new business? What financial resources do you need, and will you need a loan from family or a bank? How do you plan to expand beyond your existing customer base, and how will you manage that additional work as well as the additional expenses involved? If you get more business than you can manage, how will you handle that? How will you weather business continuity challenges, like storms or pandemics?

Straight out of college, Carmelo became a franchisee for the painting company College Pro. He realized exterior vinyl painting was something that was missing in the industry. He started digging into why and found that the standard paint production process just doesn’t work for vinyl application.

Carmelo started asking why additives weren’t added on site to adjust to weather conditions, and he kept hearing the same thing:

That’s just how it’s always been done.

He decided to reimagine the process and formulate his own paint. Spray-Net was born, and today he makes around $21 million per year selling painting franchises and training the franchisees. There are now more than 130 Spray-Net locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Learn about the painting industry

Though car painting and artistic painting can be viable business options, in this guide, we’ll be covering house painting businesses.

Starting a house painting business requires startup costs between $50 and $35,000, depending on the type of painting business and whether you have the tools and equipment to start painting.

Painting companies that need a shop could cost much more than $35K because you’ll need to put a deposit on the space, remodel, and furnish the space. That’s why many people consider starting a painting business from home. Costs will vary based on the region.

The basic painting supplies, like brushes, drop cloths, extension poles, paint trays, and rollers, aren’t that expensive. The main costs will be a vehicle, business formation, and insurance when you first start. You’ll save a lot of money if you already have a vehicle.

Yes, painting business owners can make great money, but it depends.

According to business research firm IBIS World, the average painting company makes about $140K per year with a 6.9% profit margin, which isn’t very good. Successful professional painters can make much more though. Carmelo told us about Spray-Net’s earnings.

The company makes $10,420 per hour. First-year franchises make around $500K [in] revenue per year, while older franchises average $1.2M. Gross margin is 59.44%.

That means first-year painting business owners can take home over $100K in net profit. The older franchises are making about 2.5 times that. We came to these numbers by multiplying the revenue by the gross margin and then subtracting 40% (20% for taxes and 20% for additional business costs).

Painter in blue coveralls and a hard hat holding a sign that reads "licensed"

Make sure to ask a licensed attorney about the requirements in your location, but most states require contractors to be licensed and insured. Make sure to register as a contractor if it is required in your location.

At a minimum, you should carry $1M per occurrence or $2M in lifetime general liability insurance to protect against damage done to clients’ property. In addition, you’ll probably need workers’ compensation and commercial automotive insurance.

You’ll want commercial painting equipment when you start a painting company. Some of the equipment you’ll need includes:

  • Drop cloths
  • Extension poles
  • Paint trays
  • A truck or van
  • Painters tape

Spray-Net has additional painting equipment requirements, including sprayers and mixers, which are necessary to mix and spray the paint on location.

Their painting process is patent protected, so if you want to use their painting equipment you’ll need to buy a Spray-Net franchise.

Get ready to learn how to start a painting business.

You’ll need to learn how to paint professionally to avoid making mistakes that cost you time and money. Potential customers expect you to protect their property and don’t want to request touchups after you declare the job done.

Make sure to develop painting skills, like:

  • Protecting the space
  • Knowledge about acrylic, latex, and oil paints
  • Using primers for interior painting (some exceptions apply)
  • Properly using paint brushes, rollers, and sprayers
  • Scraping, sanding, and patching
  • Applying an even coat
  • Cutting paint

And don’t forget to always paint a room from top to bottom.

This article is a good start for understanding the market and financial viability of a painting company. You’ll want to do more research to understand whether a painting business will be successful in your area.

Research the number of local painting businesses and their reputations, pricing, and services. You’ll also want to know how many area homeowners there are, or the number of potential commercial clients.

Understanding how others market their painting companies will help you manage your painting business so you can differentiate your marketing strategy from the rest of the pack.

Painting business plans help you, lenders, and your employees understand the company’s values, unique value propositions, and intended operations.

You can make a simple one-page business plan just to help you keep your business on track, or you can create a more extensive business plan for when you apply for business loans.

Carmelo told us:

I was young and gung-ho and didn’t have a plan. But now, I warn people [that] failing to plan is planning to fail.

You’ll need a professional name for your painting business. Your business name will be how people recognize the business. It should be fun, easy to spell, and identifiable as a painting company.

You should look up your painting company name ideas on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website and other search engines to make sure the business name is available. Then you’ll want to choose your business structure and register your business.

Painting contractors will need to register their painting business with their Secretary of State and potentially their local government. You have a few business structure options when starting a painting business, but the most common types are a limited liability company or sole proprietorship.

A limited liability company makes your painting business a unique entity (as long you keep your personal and professional finances separate). This prevents you from being personally liable if something occurs within the business. There are also tax benefits to a business being a separate entity.

Meanwhile, a sole proprietorship is a business structure where you and the house painting business are one entity, which means if an accident happens, your personal assets can be taken to reimburse the client or employee.

Learn more in our guide to business structures .

Many locations require you to become a licensed painter when starting a painting business.

A painter’s license is just a business license that requires you to prove you have the insurance your area requires you to have. The best insurance to cover everything is often a business owner’s policy, but we’ll discuss insurance more below.

There may be other requirements, including testing or job experience, depending on the location.

You’ll need a business bank account to keep your personal and business expenses separate. You can choose to get a business bank account from:

  • Brick-and-mortar banks: These banks are local to you, have higher probabilities of approving loans, and are easier to deposit cash.
  • Online-only business banks: A business owner can benefit from an online bank with lower fees and higher interest rates on savings, but it’s harder to deposit cash and get a loan.

UpFlip’s business insurance article on a laptop

A successful painting business needs insurance to protect the business owner, their employees, and their commercial and residential painting clients. You might be wondering, what insurance does a self-employed painter need?

The small business insurance you need when starting a painting business is:

  • General liability insurance: This coverage protects you if your painting company accidentally damages or hurts a non-employee. It is typically a $1M per occurrence or $2M for a lifetime policy, but some local governments or commercial clients may require higher limits.
  • Workers compensation insurance: You’ll want this in case anyone gets hurt on the job. It will cover their injuries and their wages as long as they weren’t negligent or intoxicated. This is mandatory in nearly every state.
  • Unemployment insurance: This insurance protects workers who get laid off. It’s required by law in every state.
  • Commercial auto insurance: You’ll need separate car insurance for your business vehicles.

Many of these can be combined into one plan with a business owner’s policy. You can learn more in our business insurance guide .

When you’re ready, we suggest going to Simply Business to get quotes from the largest insurance companies in the world.

At this point, you have a business entity, business license, and insurance. You can operate your own business, but what services are you going to offer, and how will you price painting jobs to establish positive cash flow?

To give you an idea, we’ll cover Spray-Net’s services and pricing.

Spray-Net offers three main services:

  • Exterior painting: They have spray coatings that work on exterior vinyl, stucco, brick, and doors or glass windows.
  • Kitchen cabinet painting: Spray-Net offers indoor services, as well, such as cabinet painting.
  • Roof re-granulating: I wouldn’t think to hire painting contractors if my roof has issues, but Spray-Net paints roofs and says the painting job adds 15 years to the life of the roof. Check out their explainer video below.

They price each job either by the square foot or the number of cabinets. They also provide an online estimator so potential customers can get an idea of how much the job will cost.

Their average ticket for a painting job is $5,815, which puts it between the cost of replacing and standard repainting. They offer warranties nearly three times longer than most residential painting companies.

Before you start a new painting business, you should probably look at their professional painting work. You might want to consider their franchise business model to make more money painting houses.

As we stated earlier, when you start a painting company, you’ll need:

  • Truck or van
  • Paint brushes
  • Booties for your shoes
  • Respirators

You can get these at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or any paint supply store.

You’ll need a good accountant and bookkeeper to keep your financials in order and help you comply with taxes. Ask other business owners in your area who they prefer.

Jobber home page on a tablet

You’ll need software to run your own painting company. Here’s some of the essential software:

  • Website: You’ll want to build a website. Which means you’ll need a domain name from somewhere like GoDaddy .
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) system: You’ll also need to have a CRM to manage all your customers. Small business owners tend to like Jobber or Housecall Pro .
  • Accounting software: You’ll want to get QuickBooks to manage your small business’s finances and payroll. A small business owner can make themselves an employee to receive a weekly paycheck.
  • Payroll processor: A modern small business will need to accept credit cards, which means you’ll need a payment processor like Square .

Successful businesses require marketing to grow. Most small businesses in the service industry will use a combination of digital marketing and print marketing.

Carmelo explained:

We started by knocking on doors. Then when we painted town hall [and got news coverage for it], which created more jobs.

Then he expanded to digital marketing and traditional marketing.

We spend $3-4M across the system, but you should spend about 10% of your revenue on marketing. Facebook and Google are best. Then you’ll want to add [NextDoor].

Many people want to focus on branding, but Carmelo has other advice about how to start your own painting business.

Facebook and Google gets you in the door—then tell people about your brand [while you are providing a quote].

Once you hit the point of diminishing returns on ads, it’s time to start making YouTube videos. Another marketing technique that helps drive customers to your own painting business is appearing on business shows.

DragonDen (similar to SharkTank) reached out. I originally said no, but after a few times, decided to do it. The business was so crazy Microsoft thought our server was broken.

Next, you’ll want to get your first job.

UpFlip’s cheap business cards review article on a desktop computer

A house painting company can use all kinds of techniques to get that first customer. Carmelo preferred going door to door.

You might want to practice painting pitches before you start providing quotes for painting houses. Carmelo used the one below when starting a painting company.

I noticed [this thing wrong on the house]. Did you know we can fix it for $X?

After explaining the hows and whys, Carmelo continued:

I’ll give you a quote, then give us a call anytime. We’ll be in the neighborhood, so you should see us around.

It might help to bring some painter’s business cards. We cover the places you can get low-cost house painting business cards in our inexpensive business card guide .

Carmelo went on to explain:

Customer service is the biggest thing. There is a luck component to business. It’s a lot of hard work, but sometimes it’s just a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

For instance, when we got the town hall job, it was because we painted the house of a person working there. I strategically priced it to get the job for publicity. Then we got the press to cover it.

You’ll also want to be careful about how much you take on at first. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is growing your painting business too fast. Carmelo explained:

We grew so fast that I stopped paying attention to the numbers. We reached a point where I wasn’t able to pay for payroll, and I had to change that.

Before you hire employees or subcontractors, you’ll need to make sure to document your processes so you can teach them. As Carmelo said:

It’s especially important to [document everything] if you have ambitions to scale.

This can include creating videos explaining everything you do on a job, typing your processes out, creating interactive tutorials, or all of the above. Carmelo explained one method he uses for documenting the processes for his specialized services:

We put a QR code on every paint can for the painting business pro to learn how to use it effectively.

Unless you want a really small painting company that just covers your salary, you’ll need employees or subcontractors. That means you’ll need a payroll processor. You’ll also need to do interviews and background checks.

I base my hiring decisions based on whether I like them. If I don’t, I’m not going to like working with them. The other stuff I can teach.

You can learn more about hiring straight from a recruiter in our hiring how-to .

Now you know how to become a house painter. Want to skip all the learning about how to get painting contracts, the average cost of painting a room, and advertising painting services?

What Are Side Hustles?

  • Make Extra Money With Your Side Hustle Idea [/su_note]

Get ready to find a side hustle idea to get paid and control your own schedule.

Side hustles are ways to make extra money during time away from your full-time job. A survey from Insuranks found that 93% of Americans had a side hustle in 2022. The most common side hustle jobs were:

  • Taking online surveys
  • Selling items online
  • Freelancing
  • Selling used clothes
  • Working a part-time job

That doesn't mean these are the best side jobs, but they are what most people end up doing.

Nick told us:

[su_quote]Look for a small niche with high margin profit. They have to get you where you want to be. If they don't, they are no good.[/su_quote]

Throughout this article, we refer to several data sources. The way they interact can make the math look a little funny, so let us break it down a bit. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is normally the best source for data on salaries, and we refer to those numbers in some of the sections below. All revenue data was pulled from IBIS World . Typically, revenue will be three to five times payroll . In some scenarios, we use freelance data available from Upwork.com that shows the earnings of the best freelancers in each industry. Self-employed people will normally make somewhere between freelancer wages and average annual revenue. The tech sector is a bit like the wild, wild West, and a freelance developer may have three or four full-time jobs .

#1. Sell Items Online

Man working on laptop

• Average Annual Revenue: $60K-$120K • Average Profit Margins: 5-15% • Startup Cost: $100-$10K • Time To Revenue: 30-90 days • Annual Market Growth Rate: -9.3% • Best for: Thrifters, collectors, hobbyists and craftsmen

Start selling online if you are interested in the second most popular side hustle. The hustle income can either be a profit or a loss. If you're selling items, the profit is the cost minus the sales price. Used items will normally be at a loss if you paid full retail. That means you can deduct it from your taxes (this is not legal advice).

If you start reselling, it can help make a great living. Find out about the best things to resell online.

#2. Dropshipping Business

• Average Annual Revenue: $36K-$50K • Average Profit Margins: 5% • Startup Cost: $150-$500 • Time To Revenue: 1-3 months • Annual Market Growth Rate: 25% • Best for: Those with marketing and eCommerce skills

The dropshipping business model partners with a supplier who ships the products directly to customers. That means you don't spend money on inventory until someone buys the products.

This is one of the best side hustle ideas because you can sell online without inventory. Consider items like electronics, clothes, home goods, and accessories.

According to Dripshipper, a dropshipping business can make $1,000 to $3,000 per month with just 10 to 15 hours each week. You can make even more if you go full time. Just ask Ryan Hogue how he's made millions with dropshipping .

#3. Sell Your Used Clothing

• Average Annual Revenue: $60K-$120K • Average Profit Margins: 5-15% • Startup Costs: $100-$1K • Time To Revenue: 30-90 days • Annual Market Growth Rate: -9.3% • Best for: Shoppers and collectors, fashionable entrepreneurs, women with strong sales skills

Both adults and kids tend to outgrow clothing. As long as it's in good condition, you can find someone to buy it from you. You can start your own online store on eBay or Etsy and make some extra money from the clothes you don't need.

Check the interview we've done with Vlad, who makes over $60K a month with his Etsy shop:

This side hustle includes a broad range of skills in high demand. Side hustlers love becoming freelancers because they will normally make more hourly than they do at their full-time jobs. You'll spend your own time:

  • Finding clients
  • Freelance Writer
  • Graphic Designer
  • Online Tutor
  • Data Analyst
  • Affiliate Marketer
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Getting paid for each project

[su_quote]Anything online is normally a great side hustle.[/su_quote]

Freelance work landed at #4 on our Top 5 list (above), and we take a deeper dive here. Many people in the U.S. do freelance work. If you're missing out on the growth in this industry, you might regret it because Upwork and Zippia show:

  • $1.35 trillion of the U.S. economy goes to freelancers (Upwork).
  • 57% of freelancers are happy with their earnings compared to 42% of employees (Upwork).
  • $28 an hour is the average billable rate (Zippia).
  • 30% of Fortune 500 Businesses hire freelancers (Zippia).
  • 70% of small businesses hire freelancers (Zippia).
  • The total addressable freelance market could be as high as $5 trillion.

The statistics in the following sections are pulled from an Upwork search of jobs and using the search “Upwork best [Job]” where [Job] is in the subheading.

As you consider the following, keep this pro tip from Nick in mind:

[su_quote]Any side hustle where you have to sell your time isn't going to be the most profitable. If you do these you want to tie your services to an up-and-coming SaaS project so you can master it and develop a reputation for being the best source of information about it.[/su_quote]

There are many ways to make money, but you probably don't want to take on another full-time job (or even a part-time gig that conflicts with your busy schedule). That's where side hustles come in!

You can spend as much or as little time and money as you want to meet your financial goals. One of the best ways to see which side hustle makes the most sense for you is to look at what people advertise online.

This can provide great hints about current opportunities. For instance, social media displays online business ventures and other endeavors for creative types worldwide.

You might also notice specific products and services showing up consistently in online ads. When you do, start researching the way these companies approach their business and what makes their offerings desirable.

They Are Known as…Side Hustle Legends

Take all your expenses and sort them by cost. Then celebrate when you eclipse another expense. Eventually you'll get to where your side hustle covers your costs and then you get closer to leaving your job.[/su_quote]

painting business plan in india

Who Are the Major Players in the Restaurant Industry?

  • Darden : The parent company of Olive Garden and Longhorn Steakhouse makes nearly $9 billion per year and nearly 10% profit margin. Figure out how to open a restaurant that emulates their business strategy and you’ll be a happy restaurant owner.
  • Chipotle : The leader in the fast food industry has made a lot of gains over the years. It has surpassed both McDonald’s and Chick-Fil-A to have 2.2% market share. Chipotle makes around $7 billion and keeps growing, but their profit margin slightly lags the fast food industry .
  • Hakkasan Group : A nightclub and bar operator that owns multiple Vegas hotspots earns more than $360 million dollars but has a lousy 2.4% profit margin.

Step 3. Identify Your Ideal Target Market

  • Generation : Understanding which generations are more likely to eat at a restaurant can be helpful. For instance, getting younger generations to try new cuisines might be easy, while asking them to spend $200 on fine dining might not be.
  • Gender : Women tend to be more likely to view food-based social media and blogs. If you can get them interested, you have a good chance of getting their significant other to try your food.
  • Location : Do people tend to travel to eat at a restaurant or do they want something closer to their house? Depending on the location and type of restaurant, the answer varies.
  • Wealth : If you’re trying to sell a premium experience, you’ll need to be in a premium neighborhood and market your restaurant opening to those that can afford it.
  • Buying Preferences : You’ll want data like frequency of eating out, preferred means of payment, time of day more likely to eat, and what social media influencers they follow.

  • Government programs : Check the SBA site to see if there are grants for opening a restaurant. Then apply to see if you qualify.
  • Small business loans : You might qualify for a small business loan especially if you are a franchise. Try our preferred lender, National Business Capital .
  • Home equity loan : A home equity loan is a great way to get enough funds to start your restaurant, but many restaurants fail. If yours fails, you lose your home.
  • Business partner: Many amazing chefs open their first restaurant because they were approached by a business partner.
  • Friends and family : People who trust you and believe in your mission may be willing to help you get started.
  • Crowdfunding : See if you can get retail investors to fund your company.
  • Credit cards : You might use credit cards to fund part of a small restaurant, but most people don’t have a half a million credit line on their card. You’ll probably need other ways to fund your new restaurant in addition to a credit card.

You can sell them to your friends and family members, or in some cases, you can even open up a shop in the local area.

When you run out of paper towels and free window cleaner, you can easily buy more after the first job.

If you really want to get creative, use a squeegee and develop your own cleaning products that you can sell to your clients.

As a teen, this is great because it combines low costs with lots of opportunities to increase your skill set.

Running a laundry service is a great way to make money, and it can be very profitable. A ton of people are too busy to do their laundry and would be happy to have someone come to their home and do it for them.

As your business grows, you can get a location where customers can just drop off the clothes on the way to work and pick them up on the way home.

You’ll need more than one washer and dryer to have a location with drop-offs to serve the client, though. You will most likely have to buy or rent them from a company that provides laundry equipment for entrepreneurs.

You will also need to get the supplies, such as detergent, fabric softener, bleach, and other things needed for washing clothes. After you have purchased the necessary supplies, start marketing to more people in the area.

Check out our interview with Ferndale Laundry to find out how lucrative a laundromat can be.

Make sure you have a little radio with the ice cream man music playing, and your job’s done.

All the kids will rush your ice cream, and you’ll be ready for your next journey to the grocery store. If you want to hire your friends to work jobs at other parks, the growth can compound quickly!

Penske plans auburn hills paint factory for special edition mustangs, broncos.

Kurt Nagl

Kurt Nagl is a reporter covering manufacturing — particularly the automotive industry's transition to electrification, the impact on the supply base and what it means for the state — as well as the business of law. Before joining Crain’s Detroit Business, he reported in Iraq and China and for various publications in Michigan.

Penske

Penske Vehicle Services plans to invest $6 million and add up to 130 jobs in Auburn Hills for a custom paint factory for new special edition vehicles by Ford Motor Co. and possibly other automakers.

The company intends to build out a “state-of-the-art vehicle painting facility” in a 115,000-square-foot building within a supplier park near I-75 and M-59, according to a site plan submitted to the city.

Site developers Dembs Development Co. and Schostak Brothers & Co. Inc. are seeking approval for tree removal and a special land use permit, which the Auburn Hills planning commission is scheduled to consider Wednesday. The 10-acre site is zoned for technology and research, but the Penske plant would involve light industrial use.

Penske Vehicle Services, a subsidiary of Bloomfield Hills-based Penske Corp., is looking to use the building for its paint film program after winning contracts with Ford to customize special edition Mustang and Bronco models, according to details submitted to the city.

Penske Automotive Senior Vice President Tony Pordon told Crain's that while nothing has been finalized, the expectation would be to open the facility in the first part of 2025.

Penske might also use the building for its wet painting program, which involves disassembling parts of a vehicle, such as doors and hoods, for a custom paint job — think black stripe down the middle of a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 or a Lincoln Navigator Black Label series topped with a black roof. Plans include about 6,000 square feet for office space as well.

In addition to low-volume paint operations, the space could also be used for customizing show cars, modifying EV products, addressing quality holds, vehicle retrofit and prototype assembly.

Per site plans, Penske expects to process around 32 vehicles each day to start, with the expectation of up to 60 vehicles per day. The plant is expected to operate on two shifts, staffing 75 employees before ramping up to 130. It would join the other dozen locations around the U.S. and Canada, including two already in Auburn Hills, housing similar operations.

A paint shop was not the original vision for the spec building at 2150 Executive Hills Court. The empty plot was approved for development in April 2019, and a shell was erected within a year.

“The facility was initially proposed to house a high-tech research and development company utilizing an equal mix of office and laboratory/shop space,” according to a memo submitted with the site plan. “However, Dembs/Schostak has been unable to secure a tenant with those specifications over the past four years due to changes in how many companies utilize office space since the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Schostak and the city ran into similar trouble with the former Palace of Auburn Hills site. The property was pegged as a research and technology park, touted for its access to metro Detroit’s main throughfares. Now, the property is set for a $278 million, 960-job parts sequencing factory servicing the nearby General Motors Orion Assembly. Piston Group, the country’s largest Black-owned auto supplier, was tapped to operate the plant, marking a homecoming of sorts for Vinnie Johnson , the former “Bad Boy”-era Detroit Pistons guard turned auto supply titan.

At the proposed paint factory, Penske is anticipating business growth into two additional Ford models and other OEM vehicles, the site plan said.

Ahead of the planning commission’s vote Wednesday, the plan received a thumbs-up from the police and fire department, engineering consultant OHM Advisors and the city of Auburn Hills’ woodland consultant, contingent on the developer providing 176 trees and paying $199,120 into the city’s tree fund to satisfy an ordinance.

Apple’s New iPad Ad Leaves Its Creative Audience Feeling … Flat

An ad meant to show how the updated device can do many things has become a metaphor for a community’s fears of the technology industry.

The silhouettes of four people in front of a bright screen advertising iPads.

By Tripp Mickle

Tripp Mickle has been writing about Apple since 2016.

The trumpet is the first thing to be squished. Then the industrial compressor flattens a row of paint cans, buckles a piano and levels what appears to be a marble bust. In a final act of destruction, it pops the eyes out of a ball-shaped yellow emoji.

When the compressor rises, it reveals Apple’s latest commodity: the updated iPad Pro.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, posted the advertisement, called “Crush,” on Tuesday after the company held an event to announce new tablets. “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created,” Mr. Cook wrote, adding, “Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.”

Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create. pic.twitter.com/6PeGXNoKgG — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) May 7, 2024

For decades, Apple has been the toast of the creative class. It has won over designers, musicians and film editors with promises that its products would help them “Think Different.”

But some creators took a different message from the one-minute iPad ad. Rather than seeing a device that could help them create, as Mr. Cook suggested, they saw a metaphor for how Big Tech has cashed in on their work by crushing or co-opting the artistic tools that humanity has used for centuries.

The image was especially unnerving at a time when artists fear that generative artificial intelligence, which can write poetry and create movies, might take away their jobs.

“It’s unusual in its cruelty,” said Justin Ouellette, a software designer in Portland, Ore., who does animation work and is a longtime Apple product user. “A lot of people see this as a betrayal of its commitment to human creative expression and a tone deafness to the pressures those artists feel at this time.”

Apple didn’t respond to requests for comment.

It was the latest in a series of recent promotional slip-ups by a company that is widely considered to be a marketing juggernaut. Its marketing of the Apple Vision Pro , released in January, struggled to help that device break through with many customers. Last year, Apple was criticized for making an awkward sketch that cast Octavia Spencer as Mother Earth , lording over a corporate meeting about the company’s effort to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Apple has been regarded as an advertising visionary since the 1980s. Its “ 1984” Super Bowl commercial to introduce the Macintosh computer is among the most famous commercials ever made. The ad, which was developed by the Chiat/Day agency, showed an actor throwing a sledgehammer through a screen projecting the face of a “Big Brother” figure that was meant to be a metaphor for IBM.

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 after 12 years away, he sought to reclaim its marketing magic. Together he and Lee Clow, the advertising creative behind the “1984” spot, developed the “Think Different” campaign. It paved the way to the famous “Get a Mac” spots, featuring a Mac and PC , and the original iPhone ad , which showed people in classic films and television shows picking up a phone and saying, “Hello.”

Apple’s marketing pitched its products as easy to use. It billed PCs and Android phones as devices for business executives working on spreadsheets, while Macs and iPhones were tools for film editors, photographers and writers.

But Apple’s advertising has been uneven over the last dozen years or so. It yanked a 2012 campaign that showcased its Apple Store “geniuses” on planes. Critics dismissed a subsequent spot, “Designed by Apple in California,” as “ lame .”

In the wake of those hiccups, Mr. Cook shifted oversight of advertising from Phil Schiller, the company’s longtime head of marketing, to Tor Myhren, a former president and chief creative officer at Grey, the ad agency that created the E-Trade baby.

Under Mr. Myhren, who joined in 2016, Apple has developed some of its ads with its own creative team and others in collaboration with an outside agency, Media Arts Lab. It has been recognized at the Cannes Lions Awards, the leading event for the ad industry, for a spot on AirPods called “Bounce,” which showed a man bounding off the sidewalk as he listened to music. Last year, Apple was named Creative Brand of the Year because of its “R.I.P. Leon” ad, in which a man sent an iPhone message saying a lizard in his care had died, then deleted it when the lizard suddenly rolled over off its back.

Mr. Myhren and Media Arts Lab didn’t respond to requests for comment about who was behind the “Crush” spot.

Michael J. Miraflor, the chief brand officer at Hannah Grey, a venture capital firm, said on X that Apple’s ad had effectively offended and turned off its core customer base, achieving the opposite of what it had done with its “1984” commercial.

“It’s not even that it’s boring or banal,” Mr. Miraflor wrote . “It makes me feel … bad? Bummed out?”

Tripp Mickle reports on Apple and Silicon Valley for The Times and is based in San Francisco. His focus on Apple includes product launches, manufacturing issues and political challenges. He also writes about trends across the tech industry, including layoffs, generative A.I. and robot taxis. More about Tripp Mickle
