Earning a Doctorate in Management

Doctoral degrees in management prepare students for careers in organizational leadership. Students who wish to pursue a management doctorate can choose from two specific degrees. The doctor of philosophy, or Ph.D., is a research-oriented degree geared toward learners who plan to work in academia. A doctor of management, on the other hand, focuses more on practical competencies and benefits those seeking advanced management roles. Rather than attending courses on-campus, students may prefer to earn a doctorate of management online.

The doctor of management leads to several high-profile career paths. Certain top executive roles, such as chief operating officers , typically hold an advanced degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that a Ph.D. may be required for top executives in education management, such as college presidents and school superintendents . Additionally, postsecondary teachers who lead management courses at four-year colleges and universities may need a doctoral degree in their field of instruction. Based on BLS data, top executives and postsecondary teachers each earn median annual salaries at more than twice the national average.

Back to School Rankings

Accreditation refers to an evaluation that colleges and universities undergo to demonstrate standards of quality education. Most employers prefer to hire candidates with degrees from accredited institutions. Other colleges and universities also use accreditation status to determine whether a student's previous coursework qualifies for transfer credits. Additionally, students who wish to qualify for federal student aid must attend schools with nationally recognized accreditors.

Colleges and universities may receive one of three types of accreditation . Regional accreditation is normally reserved for academic, not-for-profit, and state universities. On the other hand, for-profit and vocational schools generally receive national accreditation. Students should note the differences between regional and national accreditation, as many regionally accredited institutions will not accept credits from schools that are nationally accredited. Lastly, specialized or programmatic accreditation is granted to specific degree programs or sub-colleges dedicated to certain fields, such as law, medicine, and education.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversees accrediting agencies recognized by 'professional and state licensing authorities' without federal recognition. These include 60 regional, national, and programmatic accrediting organizations , as well as roughly 3,000 degree-granting postsecondary institutions. CHEA reviews accredited institutions every 3-10 years, and evaluates them based on a review process that takes key principles like quality assurance, advocacy, and inclusion into account. The U.S. Department of Education oversees federally recognized accrediting organizations and maintains a list of active and inactive regional, national, and specialized accreditation providers.

A Ph.D. in management online program represents a significant financial investment for most prospective students. Most of these degree programs carry a total cost of $20,000-$51,000, depending on the institution. In order to alleviate these high costs, many students turn to financial aid in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships.

Those earning a doctorate in management can choose from multiple federal student loan options. In order to qualify for any form of federal student aid, candidates must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This online form uses the applicant's financial history and current income to determine qualifying amount.

In addition to student loans, those seeking a doctorate in management may qualify for grants and scholarships. Unlike loans, most grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid. Students may find these opportunities through their higher education institution, public and private companies, nonprofit foundations, religious groups, and other non-academic organizations.

Key Myths About Online PhD in Management

Many people choose an online PhD in management for the wrong reasons. By learning about key myths, you can make an educated decision about enrolling in the right program.

Debunked: An impressive number of accredited colleges and universities give out doctoral degrees in management remotely. While some institutions with less than satisfactory reputations also offer online degrees, they are hardly the majority.

Debunked: Online doctoral programs are just as complex and diverse as their offline counterparts. You get access to the same courses, the same professors, and the same learning opportunities.

Online PhD students need to meet all the requirements of a regular PhD program. Just because you don’t need to attend offline classes doesn’t mean you are free to miss parts of the program. You still have to write a dissertation and defend it.

Debunked: There isn’t any difference between an online and offline degree. If you are getting an online PhD in management in an accredited institution, it is exactly the same as an offline degree in the same institution. When deciding whether to give you a job, an employer won’t differentiate between these two degrees.

Debunked: If you are getting an online PhD in management in a certain institution, it costs as much as the respective offline program. The cost may vary from college to college, but don’t expect to save just because your program is remote. Meanwhile, instead of travel expenses, you may face additional costs, such as a comfortable desk, chair, laptop, and fast internet.

Debunked:  While getting an online education means that you need to have excellent discipline, it definitely doesn’t involve learning entirely on your own. You will get the same assistance as you would online. It will just be arranged in a remote format.

Many professionals avoid getting a doctorate degree because they don’t have time to attend offline classes. Meanwhile, online education is surrounded by myths. Having a clear understanding of what getting an online PhD in management entails can help you make the right choice.

Things to Consider When Choosing for a PhD in Management Online

When you choose the best online PhD in management program, you need to keep a few things in mind:

Not all online PhD programs are created equal. You need to review the format to understand whether it suits your plans, availability, and schedule. If you are currently working, you may need to discuss the program format with your employer.

  •       Live classes – you would need to attend real-time online classes and sessions with the faculty. Virtual classrooms can be highly useful for structuring your program and arranging your time.
  •       Recorded format – you can gain access to recorded information and consultations at any convenient time. This provides excellent flexibility but requires discipline and time management skills.
  •       Hybrid – this type of format includes both live and offline participation. It may be useful for better immersion into the program but requires more flexibility on your part.

If you’ve never taken online classes before, you may want to ask other students about the pros and cons of these formats for PhD in management.

A school’s accreditation should be one of the first things you should ask about when getting an online PhD in management. This can have an impact on the quality of your education as well as employment opportunities in the future.

In the United States, six agencies can provide accreditation. All of them are officially accepted by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education. These agencies are:

  •       Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE)
  •       Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  •       Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  •       Northwest Commission on Colleges and University (NWCC)
  •       Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  •       WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

If the university or college you choose for getting your doctoral degree is accredited by one of these organizations, you don’t have to worry about issues with the diploma in the future.

When choosing the best program for your PhD studies, you need to check the requirements. Some programs may require you to have a master’s degree while others can settle for a bachelor’s degree and specific experience.

You would definitely need to provide your academic records to enroll in any program. Each school sets its own standards for these records. Some can accept a GPA of 3.0 while others don’t look at applicants with a GPA of less than 3.7.

Next, you would need to submit a research proposal that can demonstrate your existing knowledge and plans for your dissertation. Before submitting this proposal, consider consulting colleagues, professors, or even potential supervisors.

Some programs may need you to take a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) exam to test your knowledge. Sometimes, a school can ask you to take additional entrance examinations.

You would also need to present a resume. A well-designed resume can help the university understand how motivated you are to get a PhD. It can also provide important information about your previous research, accomplishments, and experience.

If you feel that you aren’t meeting the school’s requirements in the best way possible, you may want to add letters of recommendation to your application. You can get these letters from teachers, professors, and employers (if your work is related to management).

Don’t hesitate to ask for these letters from your professors, advisors, and supervisors. They can play a major role in the decision to accept you to a program.

Your personal statement is another factor that can have a major influence on the decision about your admission. Take the time to describe your previous research and your desires for further research in the field.

You may also need to talk about your career and how getting a PhD can help advance it. A personal statement is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impression without relying on academic records and test scores.

Once you choose a program and submit all the required documents, the school may decide to arrange an interview. For online programs, the interview can be remote. It’s an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your desire to study in a particular school and the goals you want to accomplish.

During the interview, you would likely need to answer questions about your personal skills and qualities, plans for your PhD project, research experience, and academic achievements. Interviewers may also ask you why you choose a particular university. Be ready to give clear and genuine answers.

Find your degree.

online phd in management

A management degree is essentially a one-way ticket to job security, a comfortable salary, and the opportunity to shine as a leader in your chosen field. A manager is tasked with overseeing (or managing) a group of employees. It sounds simple but there is a lot that goes into filling this role. You may be responsible for managing promotional endeavors at your company, evaluating employee productivity, holding your employees accountable for hitting their targets, and more. A management degree will prepare you to step into a management role in the industry you choose and that is just the first step. There are typically plenty of opportunities to advance your career from within a company as well.

There are a lot of ways you can customize your management degree, too, in order to tailor your studies to your field of expertise. Programs are offered across a wide variety of disciplines including Public Administration, Healthcare, Sports Management, Engineering, Information Technology, Human Resources, and more. The most common management degree programs are in business and many universities will offer additional concentrations. Some concentrations you may be able to choose from are things like Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Multinational Management, Supply Chain and Operations Management, or Marketing/Advertising/PR Management.

Doctorate Degrees in Management

Despite the massive growth in management as a career field, there are few options for advanced education. Your best option is generally to earn a Doctor of Business Administration. However, degrees like Doctor of Management, or a PhD in Project Management do exist. A doctorate degree in management is going to put you ahead in an increasingly competitive job market and could also prepare you to teach the next generation of leaders in business.

Doctorate programs in management are advanced programs that dive deep into management and leadership theory, business operations, and often include a research component. For this ranking, we focused specifically on management programs and not DBA programs as a whole. There are plenty of online options if you’d like to earn a general DBA, which would also prepare you for a career in management. Many of these are hybrid programs that would require you to come to campus sometimes on occasion, or sometimes as much as ten times per academic year.

With a doctorate in management, you would have better opportunities for career advancement. You could work conducting research for the field, as a professor at a college or university, as part of a government agency, in an executive position in the corporate world, or create your own business as an independent consultant. This advanced academic preparation will ensure that you’re ready for anything your professional life throws at you — or anything you want to aspire to become.

Earning an Online Doctorate Degree in Management

While there are a lot of hurdles that come with earning an advanced degree, you can do it and it is definitely worth it. Online education programs are not going to solve all of your problems but the opportunity to study at a distance makes a doctorate in management so much more accessible. By choosing to study online, you can allay your fears of having to relocate or juggle work and school. That is because you can complete your coursework wherever you have an internet connection and often, you can login and work on your classes at any time of the day or night that works for you.

Another benefit of online education is that there are typically fewer costs associated with it because there are not as many fees to pay and you won’t be living on a college campus. Online students are often still eligible for financial aid, scholarships, and a host of amazing student services offered by the institution they are digitally attending. If an online doctorate in management seems like a good fit for you, check out the programs we’ve ranked below. All of the schools featured were ranked according to the following.

Methodology

Ranking the best online doctoral programs in management began with compiling a list of all of the schools that offered at least one such program, either in a fully-online or hybrid delivery format. We also made sure to include only those schools that are based in the United States, hold proper accreditation, and do not operate with a for-profit model. The schools that met our initial ranking criteria were then scored out of a possible 300 points. The scores were calculated using the following factors.

  • Freshman Retention Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Graduate Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Affordability (⅓ of final score)

Once each school had a final score, we ranked them according to that number. Some schools that may have otherwise ranked could have been omitted due to insufficient information being available or according to their own wishes. We do not award preferential treatment to any institution, at any time, for any reason.

All of the information used to compile scores and discuss the programs was taken from the schools’ own websites whenever it was available. In the event that we couldn’t find what we were looking for, additional resources such as the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. News & World Report , Niche.com, and Collegedata.com were used.

There are several different types of management degree, and the type that you pursue has to do with the field that you want to enter. If you want to focus specifically on project management, you would pursue a project management degree. You can also choose to add an area of concentration to your degree. The concentration you choose will tailor your education to the career you’d like to obtain in the future after you graduate. Finance management, information systems management, and marketing management are all things that you could consider. Every field needs managers, and there is likely a degree program that will fit your academic needs to fill that role. These programs are designed to give you all of the knowledge that you need to truly take the reigns and manage a business.

What Can You Do With a Management Degree?

Another thing that makes management so versatile is that there is not one business in the nation that doesn’t require managers. You can use electives, minors, or even entire degree specializations or additional certificates to tailor your program of study to fit the industry that you would like to work in. Risk manager, social media manager, management consultant, and production manager are just some of the positions you would be qualified for with a management degree.

Of course, every organization and every field are going to have their own set of requirements that they have when it comes to filling roles in their businesses. However, here is a look at some common jobs you could get with a management degree.

Production managers are in charge of planning and coordinating manufacturing processes. You could see yourself designing jobs to fit a certain budget, managing teams of people as they do the hands-on production work, ensuring that targets are being met according to the allotted time frame, and more. Textile processing and food production are common industries that employ people in this position.

One of the most straightforward career paths you could choose with your management degree is to go into management consulting. Management consultants use their academic background to analyze a business and help it to improve. You could even be involved in helping build a business from the ground up. You would be tasked with offering objective advice on things like corporate strategy, business structure, operations procedures, and more. This is a research-oriented job where you would collect and analyze data from businesses and synthesize that data into actionable advice.

Marketing management, social media management, non-profit management, and several other positions are available to you once you’ve earned your degree in management.

What Can I Do With a Doctorate or PhD in Management?

online doctoral programs, online phd programs, dba programs, management online, online dba, doctor of management, online doctorates in management

Management consulting is one of the most common positions for those with a PhD in Management. This is because companies trust management consultants to be completely self-sufficient. They do not typically report to anyone, and they are in charge of doing what they are hired to do without much oversight at all. In addition, the future of a business is literally in the hands of the management consultant that they hire. Businesses rely on the expert advice that these consultants provide, so the higher your level of education is, the more likely you are to be able to land such a job. This position is sometimes also called a management analyst. It is a very research-driven job. The fundamental research skills you will gain while earning your management PhD are invaluable for this type of work.

You could work as a high-level executive for a company. You could see yourself in charge of the organizational development and direction of a corporation or designing company policies and strategies that keep things moving towards the targets that a business has set for itself. Working as a C-Level executive takes a lot of knowledge, expertise, and experience. A doctorate degree in management will certainly give you all of that and more.

Another obvious option that is sometimes overlooked is that a PhD is the perfect preparation to teach at a college or university, even for managers. You could also become an economist, a market research analyst, and so much more. A PhD in Management is a very widely applicable degree.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Doctorate Online

A business professional working on their online doctorate degree during their lunch break

From heightened career advancement opportunities to increased salary potential, there are many reasons why people are choosing to earn doctorate degrees in 2024. Thanks to the proliferation of online doctorate programs, working professionals no longer have to press pause on their jobs to attend classes or complete coursework. Instead, tens of thousands of American professionals each year are rising to meet the growth in doctoral and professional-level occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), such occupations are projected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026, which is faster than the 7-percent average projection for all occupations.

If you are interested in earning a doctoral degree, you may have questions such as “Are online doctoral degrees respected?” or “Do I need to earn my degree from an accredited institution?” Discovering the answers to those questions can help you determine whether an online doctorate is a good fit for helping them achieve their professional and personal goals.

Pros of Online Doctorate Programs

Online doctoral programs provide students with a long list of benefits. While some may come to mind immediately — the ability to complete coursework from your home office or a breakroom at work, for example — others are less obvious but equally meaningful. Consider several positive elements of both the experience and impact of earning an online doctoral degree.

Flexibility

For the average working professional, spare time is a precious commodity. Between personal and professional obligations, an in-personal doctoral program with a rigid class schedule is often a non-starter. The university administrators designing the best online doctoral degree programs understand the time constraints for aspiring students and intentionally offer creative solutions that enhance the lives of professionals rather than burden them.

The flexibility of an online doctoral program empowers professionals to continue building their careers as they earn their degrees. This flexibility helps the calendar stay manageable and allows students to integrate what they are learning into their jobs in real time.

Saving Time

Gone are the days when pursuing a doctorate necessarily meant relocation, residency, or refraining from full-time work. While some individuals will find that a cross-country move for in-person coursework or an all-in approach to academic life best fits their doctoral pursuit, most working professionals are looking for a different path. An online doctoral program offers such individuals a time-savvy approach to further education. There’s no time spent commuting, walking to class, or learning the nuances of a new city and campus. Instead, the online delivery model brings education into the professional’s existing home, workplace and routine.

Instead of a rush hour drive from the office to an evening lecture, the out-of-class time commitment is simply the opening of a laptop. Frantically looking for parking to make it to a professor’s office hours on time is replaced with a virtual meeting link. Through an online program, students are empowered to make the most of their hours and can devote time and energy to their work, personal life and school.

There are long-term time savings for online doctoral degree earners as well. Students enrolled in online programs often earn their degrees more quickly than their peers enrolled in in-person programs. The efficient approach to time in online doctoral programs not only allows students to leverage their schedules during the program but after as well, as they graduate ready to make the most of their time in the workplace.

Personalized Learning

One of the most beloved features of online doctoral programs is the personalized learning approach. Through both live and asynchronous instruction, students have access to multiple educational modes. Individuals who learn best through reading, for example, can access transcripts for online courses, while those who benefit from writing out their thoughts may find discussion forums especially useful.

Additionally, the best online doctorate degree programs pair students with faculty mentors — who, because of the virtual nature of the program, can live anywhere in the country — who work and research in fields specific to the student’s interests.

Maximized Networking

Online doctorate programs empower working professionals to expand their networks significantly. By connecting with fellow students throughout the country, students enrolled in online doctorates have the opportunity to cultivate a more diverse community of like-minded professionals who are collectively working toward the greater good. The insight, perspective and experiences of individuals from various backgrounds can help students develop a national, and even global, lens for viewing their work, relationships and impact.

While an in-person educational experience can facilitate good conversation, an online platform creates a greater opportunity for diversified discussion. A principal working in education in a rural area, for example, may be enrolled in an online doctorate of education course with a superintendent in a major city. A business consultant who serves an aging client base may form a connection with an analyst focused on young professionals. Relationships like these can be mutually enriching, expanding perspectives and providing ample opportunity for collaboration, sharing advice and encouraging lifelong learning.

Cons of Online Doctoral Programs

While the online doctoral experience is overwhelmingly positive, there are a few factors for aspiring students to bear in mind. By asking the right questions about themselves and the programs they are considering, doctoral hopefuls can find the best fit for their educational futures.

Net-Based Networking

While virtual networking has tremendous potential for cultivating an expansive, diverse community, some prefer in-person interaction. For working professionals who find digital communication or relationship-building difficult or uncomfortable, the networking element of online doctoral programs may be challenging.

Credibility Concerns

Whether or not online degree programs are respected is an important issue for individuals considering a doctorate. The most critical question is whether or not an accredited institution issues a degree. Students who earn degrees — whether online or in-person — from accredited institutions can feel at ease about the credibility of their program. When a trusted accrediting body gives a program its stamp of approval, that means it meets high educational standards.

There are several accrediting bodies in the United States, many of which focus on certain types of degree programs or regions of the country. AACSB, for example, accredits business schools. The scope of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) includes distance and correspondence education for eleven states and Latin America.

Time Management

Personalized learning, asynchronous instruction and virtual coursework mean that online doctoral students must create schedules and establish the structure for working toward their degrees. Individuals who struggle with time management or self-discipline may find that an in-person educational experience provides them with the rigor and boundaries they need to succeed academically.

Best Hybrid and Online DBA Programs—2024

April 1, 2024

online dba programs degrees

A DBA, or Doctorate of Business Administration, is a terminal degree for those aiming to become leading professionals in business. This degree offers training in business analytics and research methods, supporting executives, managers, consultants, and educators as they explore important contemporary questions in the field. Better yet, professionals can become doctors of business administration online (or through hybrid formats), which can be perfect for those who already hold full-time jobs. Continue reading for a DBA overview, as well as a list of the 20 best online DBA programs/DBA degrees in the U.S.

What’s the difference between a DBA and a PhD?

First of all, it’s important to distinguish between the DBA and the PhD, both terminal and doctoral degrees.

DBA programs are fairly flexible, designed for professionals who plan to work full-time jobs while enrolled. Most DBA programs, whether in-person, hybrid, or online, require students to complete about 60 credits (this may vary widely) in approximately 3 years. During the first two years, DBA candidates take courses and participate in residencies to receive core class requirements. The third year is often completely remote, allowing more space for working on the capstone or dissertation. So, if you’re looking for a lower-residency program that will enhance your success as a business professional, a DBA could be an excellent option.

While a DBA’s flexibility makes it ideal for those with full-time jobs, a PhD is best for those who wish to be full-time students while enrolled. While a DBA usually takes 3-years to complete, a PhD usually requires 5-years of residency in a program. This degree tends to be better suited for those seeking academic careers in teaching and scholarship.

Possibilities for enrollment in an online or hybrid DBA program

Enrolling in an online or hybrid DBA program is best for students who plan to work full-time while pursuing the degree. However, even these DBA programs vary in flexibility when it comes to scheduling. Many programs offer some combination of these models:

  • Synchronous online programs (or partially-synchronous programs) require students to log in at certain times for lectures and discussions, so they are useful for students with schedules that allow for some regular course commitments.
  • Asynchronous programs allow students to fully schedule their coursework on their own time, which can be especially convenient for those with full-time jobs and packed schedules.
  • Hybrid programs require students to occasionally show up on campus, for example, to attend in-person residencies on weekends. These programs are useful for students who have busy schedules but can make enough time to commit to campus visits. Most of the schools listed below involve at least some aspects of hybrid learning.

Continue reading for examples of online and hybrid DBA programs that offer courses in a range of formats.

11) Johnson & Wales University (Providence, Rhode Island)

This program focuses on ethically addressing business challenges. Students complete 54 credits throughout 18 courses, focusing on one 8-week course at a time. There are no residency requirements, though students continuously engage with faculty online, making it a flexible-yet-supportive option.

12) University of Missouri, St. Louis—College of Business Administration (St. Louis, Missouri)

This cohort-based program is also quite flexible, since students only make two visits to campus over the course of three years. Those with 10-20 years of management experience who seek to advance a professional career are encouraged to apply.

13) University of North Alabama—College of Business (Florence, Alabama)

This is a hybrid program, primarily online with monthly on-campus sessions. It involves 54 required credits, and students are expected to complete most coursework the first two years while working on their dissertation the third.

18) University of Rhode Island—College of Business (Kingston, Rhode Island)

How to Decide if an MBA Is Worth it

Understand your financial and career goals before enrolling in an MBA program.

A master's degree in business administration can be a great asset when looking for jobs but applicants should weigh the commitment of this opportunity.

Key Takeaways

  • Earning an MBA is always a significant time investment.
  • Consider career goals and costs before enrolling in an MBA program.
  • An MBA may lead to salary, promotion or job market benefits.

An MBA is a game changer for many professionals – a way to build specialized skills, make salary gains and valuable professional connections, or even change careers.

But it's not the right fit for everyone. Before committing to graduate business school to pursue a master of business administration degree, it's important to consider the time commitment, costs, potential return on investment and your personal career goals, experts say.

"You don't do it because you don't have anything else to do," says Sue Oldham, associate dean of MBA operations at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management in Tennessee. "You are doing it because you really want this career pivot and you want to be doing something different."

What to Consider Before Applying to an MBA Program

Time commitment.

A full-time MBA program typically takes two years, although accelerated full-time programs can take a single year. Executive and part-time MBA programs, designed for professionals who are attending school while working a full-time job, vary in length depending on how many credits a student takes each semester. Online and hybrid programs are also options, but every pathway to an MBA is a significant time investment.

Students should consider whether it's the right "season of life" to commit to an MBA program, Oldham says.

"Are you at a place in your life where you can step out of the workforce for two years (for a full-time MBA) and invest in yourself like that?" she says. "I think that's why part-time MBA programs are a much better option for people that are like, 'Listen, I can't take two years off. I've got to work. I've got a family. I've got a mortgage.'"

Academic Needs

Before applying, build a list of schools that meet your educational requirements, such as location, class size and academic tracks that align with your career goals.

"Unless you are definitely bound and determined and headed toward one of the very few slots available at the Ivys , the world is at your disposal for what you need and want," says Jeanne Allen, founder and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Education Reform, which focuses on expanding educational opportunities.

Allen says some non-Ivy League colleges and newer MBA programs may offer "a better service – they are better priced; they are accelerated in terms of graduating; they are personalized to your needs; they are often competency-based. And that's going to get you your best education."

Experts advise visiting prospective programs virtually or in person , especially while classes are in session.

"Spend some time getting to know the students, the alumni and the staff at the various schools, because I always think culture really matters and each school has its own unique culture," Oldham says. "You have to figure out what that school's culture is and say, 'Does this mesh with who I am, the way I learn and the way I want to work?'"

Return on Investment

According to the 2023 Corporate Recruiters Survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council, the organization that designs and administers the GMAT, MBA graduates had the highest median earning potential in the U.S. among business school graduates, with an estimated median starting salary of $125,000 in 2023. Hiring is expected to remain stable over the next five years.

To decide whether an MBA program offers good return on investment , consider tuition costs and potential starting salaries – which most schools track – and calculate the salary-to-debt ratio. The return on investment is calculated by dividing the average salary and signing bonus of recent grads by the average student debt of those who borrowed.

Per GMAC's 2023 Enrolled Students report – which surveyed more than 660 enrolled business graduate students or recent graduates in 36 countries – 90% of respondents rated the overall value of their graduate business degree as "good," "excellent" or "outstanding." In addition, median total compensation increased by one-third after graduate business training, with greater increases for full-time MBA students, according to the study.

The question is, "do you see the degree helping to advance your salary, your work experiences and your opportunities to make a difference, in the sense of being able to pay that (debt) down so that's not some overwhelming burden?" says Sean Schrader, an MBA student in his final year at the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business and president of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students.

Postgraduation, he plans to study abroad before pursuing more graduate education in law school . Schrader's ultimate goal is to work in public and government service.

"A lot of people would say, 'Why would you want to get an MBA if you're more interested in government?'" he says. "That can be a fair point. But I think that the MBA gives you a lot of skills that are very relevant in almost any environment."

Benefits of an MBA

Skill and career development.

The best MBA programs help you develop entrepreneurial habits, Allen says. "They build your ability to move, develop and manage programs in more innovative ways. It's not so much about what skills (you gain), it's about what kind of learning is going to best set you up for an increasingly complex, technologically sophisticated society, where just about anybody can start a business, manage or create a product."

Andrew Walker, director of research analysis and communications at GMAC, says MBA candidates want to graduate with problem-solving, communication, data interpretation and leadership skills, among others.

"Employers say things like patience, data analytics and strategy are the most important skills that graduate management education alumni can have and bring to their organizations," he says. "And these skills are only going to grow in importance in the next five years or so. There is a lot of alignment with the type of skills that candidates are looking for out of business school and what employers are looking for, which to us (means) a lot of business schools really are on the right track with what they are teaching alumni to be successful."

With full-time programs in particular, students graduate "better prepared to work in a culturally diverse organization," Oldham says.

Even more valuable is that MBA programs also teach certain hard skills, says Daniel Snow, director of MBA programs at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Business in Utah.

"I think that a lot of people out there think that an MBA program is about ticking boxes on a series of skills," he says. "And while our program and other top programs do give you those skills, the really important differentiator is when you come out of an MBA program with managerial judgment. You can look at a messy situation that hasn't been contemplated in your textbooks, find the core of the problem and then you can go after that problem leading an organization."

An MBA may bring salary, promotion or job market benefits. But "if you think you're going to get an MBA and it's automatically catapult you into a CEO job, that's a bad reason to get an MBA," Allen says. "It can't necessarily do that and doesn't. It all depends on who you are."

Success with an MBA "really is (about) what you put into it and whether or not it helps you advance things that you already can do, but you want to take it to another level completely," she says. "It doesn't teach you business. It builds a mindset and an understanding of business culture and exposure to what's happening in the world of business that you don't necessarily get just by reading on your own."

A New Professional Network

Experts say an MBA also helps students expand their professional networks and build new connections that may broaden their opportunities and advance their career goals .

Networks vary by school, and experts recommend considering that in your research. Some MBA programs have alumni living around the world, for instance, while others are more localized.

"It's not just quality, but where do you want to go live your career geographically?" Snow says. "The quality of the people that you are going to be around is related to the network. ... You don't want to just be some place where you are not going to be pushed. You want to be around people who are going to really push you, that are excellent, that are striving to do the same things that you are doing."
