Malayalee From India Movie Review: Nivin Pauly Shines With His Earnest Performance In A Film Which Feels A Bit Long To Be Impactful!

If you enjoy nivin pauly's performances and are okay with a somewhat disjointed storyline, it might be worth a watch for its sporadic feel-good moments.

The story revolves around Gopi, portrayed by the charming Nivin Pauly , a carefree wanderer in a quaint Kerala village. His friend Malgosh, played by Dhyan Sreenivasan, shares similar beliefs and ideologies. A misunderstanding leads to Gopi and Malgosh throwing a petrol bomb at the home of opposition party members. Although Gopi is unaware of Malgosh’s intentions, the public perceives them as acting together. Fearing for his safety, Gopi decides to flee to the Middle East. The film gracefully follows Gopi’s journey, revealing the myriad adventures he encounters there.

Malayalee from India Movie Review: Script Analysis

“ Malayalee From India ” offers a spirited yet disjointed cinematic experience buoyed by Nivin Pauly’s charismatic portrayal of Gopi. The film traverses through many themes, including comedy, political satire, and social messaging, but struggles to find a harmonious balance. While Pauly’s comedic timing alongside Dhyan Sreenivasan adds vitality to the narrative, the script’s erratic shifts between genres and themes hinder its coherence. The inclusion of astute political observations and occasional moments of genuine emotion provide glimpses of potential, but these bright spots are overshadowed by the overall disjointedness of the storyline. The inclusion of fortune telling and Muthappan (the personification of the Hindu god) reassuring a Muslim woman that everything is going to be okay, and she is also Muthappan’s child, offers commentary on Kerala’s unique social conditions, where Hindu deities are worshiped by followers of other religions and vice versa, or Nivin Pauly’s family relationship with their neighbor, a Muslim grandmother. Despite its earnest intentions, “Malayalee From India” falls short of realizing its full potential.

Malayalee from India Movie Review: Star Performance

The cast’s performance in “Malayalee From India” seems to be a mixed bag. Nivin Pauly shines as Gopi, bringing energy and comedic timing to the film. Dhyan Sreenivasan also contributes generously to Malgosh’s comedic moments. Deepak Jethi’s portrayal of a Pakistani character alongside Nivin Pauly adds genuine emotion to certain scenes. However, Anaswara Rajan’s character has faded into the background, failing to significantly impact the plot. While standout performances exist, the need for more character development and engagement is a drawback for some cast members.

Regarding direction, Dijo Jose Antony seems to have showcased remarkable self-awareness in “Malayalee From India,” particularly his ability to blend humor with astute political observations. Rojin thomas’s family drama is out on amazon prime video..

Rojin Thomas’s Home promises a heart-warming experience and achieves both a heart-warming and seat-warming experience. The Malayalam drama on Amazon Prime Video comes in at an extended two hours and 41 minutes, delivering feel-good vibes, observational comedy and homilies about life and family.

The storytelling is as unhurried and old-fashioned as the hero, a techno-illiterate man who has fallen behind in the age of the smartphone and social media. Oliver (Indrans) lives with his father (Kainakary Thankaraj), wife Kuttiyamma (Manju Pillai) and son Charles (Naslen) in Thiruvanthapuram. Oliver’s older son Anthony (Sreenath Bhasi) is a filmmaker struggling to complete his second movie.

Suffering from writer’s block, easily distracted by the pings and beeps emanating ever so often from his phone, and anxious about his impending marriage to girlfriend Priya (Deepa Thomas), Anthony fails to notice his father’s fumbling attempts to reach out to him. Anthony’s dismissive attitude towards the nondescript and frequently tongue-tied Oliver is in stark contrast with his admiration for Priya’s high-achieving father Joseph (Sreekanth Murali).

Wounded by his son’s open contempt and Charles’s occasional sneering, Oliver pours out his woes to his hypochondriac childhood friend Suryan (Johny Antony). Oliver’s attempts to master the mysteries of the smartphone lead to a series of misadventures that are embarrassing for Anthony but revelatory for Oliver.

Thomas’s screenplay plays out like a limited-episode series crunched into a movie. Home attempts to reach a meeting point between rootedness and individualism, personal contact and the new-fangled but distancing seductions of the smartphone.

Gentle comedy about human foibles is balanced with folksy wisdom about the importance of family ties. Oliver Twist’s journey of self-discovery and his own back story (including the one about his unusual name) prove that he is more hip than square, despite what his son thinks.

Thomas treats deep wounds with a bandage that has a smiley stuck on it. A less cheerful movie might have been more harsh on Anthony, who often comes off as being obnoxious to Oliver. Even Anthony’s girlfriend suffers the blast of his disdain – a situation that resolves itself without any damage to Anthony.

With compromise rather than confrontation in mind, Home focuses on creating relatable situations and amplifying the excellent chemistry between the ensemble set of actors. The movie’s hero is unmistakably Indrans, one of cinema’s finest chameleons.

Indrans’s superlative performance is both understated and attention-grabbing, minimalist in gesture and expression and maximalist in impact. The rest of the cast is on a roll too, helping Home reach its destination despite its numerous detours.

Home movie review: Indrans' Malayalam film is a charming relationship drama

Malayalam cinema is quietly making an impact with its simple stories. At a time when filmmakers are running behind stars to make pan-Indian cinema; Malayalam industry is betting its money on close-to-heart stories.

Rojin Thomas’s Home, which joins the list of recent feel-good Malayalam movies like Vikruthi and Android Kunjappan, works its magic with a simple story of a technology-challenged father, desperately trying to bond with his sons in the digital age. Home is a charming relationship drama but is too sweet at times making it slightly unbearable. However, it does leave you with a smile on your face with some lovely moments.

Home follows the relationship between Oliver Twist (Indrans) and his elder son Anthony Oliver Twist (Sreenath Bhasi) over a period of a few weeks. Anthony, a filmmaker basking in the success of his debut film, is struggling to write his second movie. With an ultimatum from his producer, he comes home, a place where he wrote his first script, to find some spark. Anthony’s father is over the moon to see his son back home, and his excitement knows no bounds as he goes around telling his friends about Anthony’s next project with a superstar. With constant pressure from the producer to complete the project, Anthony’s relationship with his family falls apart while his father tries his best to keep everything afloat.

What really works in the favour of Home is its simplistic storytelling. It doesn’t boast of a great storyline, but it manages to tug at heartstrings with a plot that’s peppered with some lovely moments and a heartwarming twist. The film does get needlessly long but it makes up for the length with some great performances from the lead cast. Veteran actor Indrans breathes life into the character of the father, who’s stuck between pleasing his sons and getting more comfortable with social media. Indrans makes this a great family drama with his effortless performance and the scenes between the members of the family are highly relatable. Sreenath Bhasi is equally good as the wayward filmmaker-son.

The film does touch upon sensitive themes like discussing meeting a psychologist, and how it’s not something to be ashamed about. There’s also a sub-plot about social media being both a boon and a bane. It’s a film you won’t mind recommending and it makes for a lovely watch with your family.

Bramayugam review: Mammootty’s intense performance and the Black-and-White format offer a unique viewing experience

Bramayugam stays true to its tagline — “A ge of Madness” . Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, the Malayalam movie is shot in Black-and-White to offer a new experience to the audience.

Bramayugam has all the elements of an experimental film.

Thanks to its out-of-the-box formula, this Mammootty-starrer will become a point of discussion in the Malayalam industry.

Without much delay, let’s see how the movie fares:

Bramayugam is set in the 17th century in South Malabar area of Kerala.

Thevan (Arjun Ashokan) and Koran (Manikandan Achary) lose their way in a dense forest.

An untoward incident happens in the forest, and Thevan reaches an old dilapidated house owned by Kodumon Potty (Mammootty), a mysterious character.

A house help played by Sidharth Bharathan lives in the house along with Kodumon Potty.

Thevan feels that Kodumon Potty performs black magic.

A cunning person, Kodumon Potty treats Thevan as his guest. But he wants to keep him as a slave in his house.

Potty is aware of Thevan’s background too.

Thevan belongs to a backward caste (Panan). He is a good singer. His song sessions with Kodumon Potty and the latter’s crooked ideas to keep Thevan in his house make for an engaging watch.

The dice game played between Thevan and Kodumon Potty gives the notion that Potty is trapping Thevan.

Till the interval, confusion prevails as to why Kodumon Potty does not allow Thevan to leave his house. He even tells him stories of how he killed other guests who entered his house.

After the interval, the plot gets a new twist. The identity of Kodumon Potty and Sidharth Bharathan’s maid character gets a new dimension. They have their missions.

Post-interval, the fights among the three characters keep the viewers engaged.

Kodumon Potty tries to deceive the other two by throwing tantrums. Does he win the battle? This is the crux of Bramayugam .

In Bramayugam , there are some references to old Malayalam films like Adharvam (1989) and Anandabhadram (2005).

In Adharvam , Mammootty played a person who studied “ Atharva Veda” .

In Anandabhadram , Manoj K Jayan played Digambaran, a black magician.

Bramayugam also has some visuals similar to the 2022 movie Kumari , where satan and ghosts appear, and there is an old house with haunting stories of the past.

Rahul Sadasivan’s making and Shehnaz Jalal’s cinematography are the USPs of the movie.

Rahul Sadasivan’s story and TD Ramakrishnan’s dialogues are apt in sequences related to Satanic verses.

The detailing of the story and the mystery behind the three major characters offer the audience an edge-of-the-seat experience.

Sound plays a crucial role in the film. Christo Xavier has done a wonderful job here. The background music elevates the mystery surrounding the story.

The art direction deserves appreciation for the setting and particularly the mysterious house.

Bramayugam is a different movie in Mammootty’s career spanning more than 40 years. The actor’s willingness to do negative characters at this age shows how much he loves experimenting despite his Superstar status.

Mammootty, as Kodumon Potty, delivers a stellar performance. His mannerisms, dialogue delivery, and wicked laugh give goosebump moments to the viewers.

He will certainly score another hit with Bramayugam after Kannur Squad (2023), Kaathal-The Core (2023), and Yatra 2 (2024).

Arjun Ashokan, as Thevan, is really good. The actor plays a serious character in the film. His combination scenes with Mammootty have come out well.

Sidharth Bharathan is impressive as the house help of Kodumon Potty. This is the career-best performance of the young actor-director.

Amalda Liz, as the witch, is the only female character in Bramayugam . She has no dialogue and gets the least screen time, but she leaves an impact.

Manikandan Achari, too, gets less screen space in the flick but is good.

Bramayugam is an experimental movie shot in Black and White. Mammootty’s power-packed performance and Rahul Sadasivan’s making make it a must-watch.

Antakshari Movie Review: Ingeniously constructed game of suspense

Who knew that some of your favourite Malayalam songs (even the feel-good ones) could be associated with disturbing images of murder, uncomfortably menacing atmosphere and nail-biting tension? Filmmaker Vipin Das has pulled off precisely that with his new film Antakshari , and to brilliant effect, I must add. The title evokes a fun, pleasing game of music, but the film uses this game to register the exact opposite reaction. Yes, it is fun, alright, but of the terrifying kind. Antakshari also indulges in another act of association: a motor vehicle is made significant in a way that no other vehicle-centric thriller has done before. And when you add a host of stand out characters and sub-plots, the result is an ingenious masterwork of suspense that should please genre enthusiasts.

Antakshari does something interesting with its screenplay. It plays out images from the past and present simultaneously -- and seamlessly too. This refusal to inform us of the timeline of each event works to the film's advantage. It only lets us know which is which towards the end. With this approach, one naturally wonders why certain characters and events are introduced and then put aside for a while. But if you are patient enough to handle a little bit of meandering behaviour, you'll find the film to be a rewarding experience. A while back, the Spanish filmmaker Oriol Paulo, who specialises in suspense, did something similar with his brilliant eight-episode series, El Inocente ( The Innocent , 2021). While Antakshari doesn't follow the exact same structure, it adopts a similarly introduce-ignore-reintroduce format to keep things intriguing. It takes a sufficient amount of time to immerse you in one character's world before moving on to another and then another, before setting up the central puzzle and leaving us to figure out how everything fits in, right until the penultimate moment.

Saiju Kurup is cast aptly as Das, an upright, Antakshari -loving circle inspector. One of his seniors assumes that his parents named him thus because they expected him to turn into another Yesudas. He has a thing for songs, enough to earn him a nickname like 'The Singing Policeman' or something, but he is no  ganagandharvan . But Das is no softie, as he would prove later on numerous occasions. When he gets a call from a mysterious caller who lets him know that he, too, likes  antakshari , Das is unsettled. From this phone call, which arrives just minutes after Das' introduction, the film doesn't let go of the uneasy momentum it has just established. It manages to sustain it -- and crank it up when necessary -- till we get up to the finale.

The film makes the best use of his lighter and more serious side. It also shows that Saiju can be a great leading man if provided with great material. Priyanka Nair is effective as Das' better half, who is prone to stammering when panic grips her. Kottayam Ramesh gets a significant chunk of the screentime as a repulsive, prejudiced cop who should've been kicked out of the force long ago but has somehow managed to hold on. Sudhi Koppa plays a newly joined officer who eventually becomes an ally to Das. Sudhi is to Antakshari what Ganesh Kumar was to Commissioner .

Yes, Antakshari has enough spine-chilling moments to put it on the Top 10 lists; however, when everything is done and dusted, the traumatic and oppressive circumstances of the characters create a bigger impact than the final revelation. The film is explicit when it needs to be while keeping other things implicit. I liked this approach because the latter opens up a space for discussions. (Unlike in the recent SonyLIV release Salute , Antakshari does both well. I understood perfectly well why some things were left unsaid. It all makes sense in the end.) And I know for sure that Antakshari will become a talking point in the coming weeks.

Antakshari evoked not just those 80s Malayalam thrillers with distressing flashbacks but also some of the memorable serial killer chillers from recent Korean cinema. Antakshari is at its most disturbing when it goes back to the past to reveal the events that caused certain characters to behave the way they do now. (Trigger warning: sexual violence) I can see why the makers opted for a direct OTT release. Given the potency of its material, Antakshari would be more apt for viewing at home than on the big screen. Not that I'm against the latter, but in this day and age where people book tickets to an A-rated movie without checking the certificate and later complain that the film is not family-friendly, the OTT release is the wiser option. (You know what's funnier? People complaining about the content of A-rated direct-to-OTT releases without checking the certificate.)

My favourite moment in Antakshari is a long, scary sequence that has Das in the woods at night, armed with just a torchlight, in the hope of confronting the killer. But -- no spoilers here -- the villain wants to play Antakshari first. He behaves like a ghost, with his voice wafting in the air, in different places and with varying decibels. After the film concluded, I asked myself if I would go back to all the classic songs the villain sang without thinking of him. It will be tricky, I imagine. At least I'm glad that I have neither owned a motorcycle nor sold it to anyone. Hell, I can't even imagine buying one now after watching Antakshari .

The NEET UG Admit Card 2024 has been released by NTA. Download now for the upcoming NEET 2024 exam

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has made the admit cards for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 available on its official website, neet.ntaonline.in. The NEET UG 2024 is scheduled to take place on May 5 from 2 PM to 5:20 PM.

With their credentials, including application number, date of birth, and other details, candidates can download their NEET UG 2024 hall tickets in preparation for the forthcoming exam.

NEET UG Admit Card 2024: How to Download

Step 1: Visit either neet.ntaonline.in or exams.nta.ac.in/NEET, the official NEET UG website.

Step 2: Search the homepage for the NEET admit card 2024 download link  and click on it.

Step 3:Enter the security code that appears on the screen along with your application number, password, or birthdate. 

Step 4:  The NEET hall ticket will show up on the screen once you’ve entered the necessary details. 

Step 5: Verify every detail, including the exam venue, schedule, address, and personal data. 

Step 6: Lastly, download your NEET UG 2024 admit card.

Malayalam movie 'Paradise' bags Audience Jury Award at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival

Malayalam film 'Paradise', starring Darshana Rajendran and Roshan Mathew, clinched the Audience Jury Award at Spain's 23rd Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival. Directed by Prasanna Vithanage and co-written by Prasanna and Anushka Senanayake, 'Paradise' weaves a story of emotion, struggle, and resilience. Produced by Newton Cinemas and presented by Mani Ratnam under Madras Talkies, it stands as the inaugural Indian film entirely shot in Sri Lanka.

The audience award is conferred by pre-selected members of the audience, chosen from among the feature films showcased in the Official Feature Films Section of the festival. The award was received by the director at the closing ceremony of the festival. Sri Lankan author Prasanna Vithanage's 10th directorial venture, features a cast, including Darshana Rajendran, Roshan Mathew, Shyam Fernando, and Mahendra Perera.

The crew, including Rajeev Ravi handled cinematography, A. Sreekar Prasad was the editor, Tapas Nayak was the sound designer, and K (Krishna Kumar) was the music director. The trailer of the film was released by Mani Ratnam and is the debut collaboration between Mani Ratnam and Madras Talkies within the Malayalam film industry. Recipient of more than 30 international awards, 'Paradise' is the 10th feature directorial of Prasanna Vithanage.
