Internships - Internships Become Resume Builders During Pandemic

Internships Become Resume Builders During Pandemic

GLOBAL-LOCAL INITIATIVES | The global COVID-19 pandemic presented LMU students with international experiences they didn’t expect. As the world adapted to life with a prevalent, highly contagious and deadly virus, Study Abroad programs were modified to offer meaningful learning opportunities.

The daily challenges were many – communicating virtually, and across mixed time zones, while navigating cultural differences – but they were met with a spirit of resilience and purpose.

“The experience of having a virtual global internship, especially during this pandemic,” said Jennifer Ramos, associate professor of political science and international relations, “has helped students gain real-world knowledge and skills that will serve them well in meeting and adapting to future challenges.”

After the pandemic forced the cancellation of the summer 2020 programs, the LMU Study Abroad team worked quickly, in collaboration with LMU Career and Professional Development and select partners around the world, to establish remote formats for a Global Internship Program for summer session II. This intensive program placed students with international companies and organizations and provided academic components of cultural learning, in addition to LMU’s professional development modules, mentoring, and career guidance.

“We had a cohort of 22 students participate last summer,” said Lisa Loberg, director of LMU’s Study Abroad, a Global-Local Initiatives program. “They successfully navigated the virtual work environment and an international setting; they now have something very unique for their resume.”

The students, representing LMU’s Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, College of Business Administration, College of Communication and Fine Arts, Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering, and School of Film and Television, filled internships in six countries. The program partners included: Institute for American Universities, Foundation for International Education, School for International Training: World Learning, and The Beijing Center, placing students at the Jordan Health Aid Society, World Wildlife Fund, the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategic Plan (PEMB), and Film Doo, among others.

Cristina Pedler ’22, an international relations major, was connected with Institute for American Universities and did her internship with PEMB. She first connected with LMU Career and Professional Development to confirm her enrollment in the one-unit summer course and was paired with a mentor, Noemi Morell, during the virtual internship experience. Pedler and her classmate, Mariana Estrada ’21, also an international studies major, and their group chose to research the future of retail in the face of e-commerce.

“Together we met and discussed the trajectory of our research,” Pedler said. “We conducted research on three different metropolitan areas and compared their infrastructure and response to COVID-19 to Barcelona’s. I studied New York, and my other group members studied Los Angeles and Rome. We consolidated our research into a presentation to our supervisor at the end of our internship on Aug. 1, 2020.”

Estrada said, “I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed learning about Barcelona and creating new ideas to possibly help their retail and e-commerce in the years to come, all from home. I most proud of my group’s motivation throughout the weeks of research and our ability to collaborate and present our shared ideas. Covid made it very difficult for some of us to contribute some days and stay positive!”

Pedler said she is proud of the work she and the group accomplished. “We dove into an assignment that was very new to us – and to anyone, because not very many people have researched the effects of a global pandemic on retail activity before,” she said. “I appreciate the guidance of IAU and PEMB during the course of my first international remote internship, and am excited to visit the office in Barcelona when I am permitted safe international travel.”

She added that the nature of virtual internships is very different from an on-the-ground experience, especially with time zone differences across the ocean that “add an additional layer of complexity in communicating in a timely manner, especially when it comes to dealing with communication lags or misunderstandings from language barriers.”

Estrada said, “I loved learning about how different all companies and countries are in the work aspect, because it shows how important it is to know the various work environments that exist in the world.”

lmu resume help

When interviewing candidates for employment or vetting candidates for graduate or professional school, interviewers often request references and letters of recommendation. Good references can elevate a potential candidate to a top choice candidate.

Letters of Recommendation

A letter of recommendation is a letter to a potential employer, organization, or program that emphasizes your strengths and casts your professional attitude or work ethic in a positive light.

A reference is a statement given by a person (known as a “referee”) to a potential employer, organization, or program. In giving a reference, the referee will share positive information about your former employment, internship, research, volunteering or other experiences.

Most of the time, you do not need to submit references when applying for positions. If the employer does ask you for references (usually toward the end of the interview process), list them on a separate sheet resembling your resume format.

The employer, organization, or program to which you are applying will tell you how many letters you need to submit. The number of letters can range from one (1) to as many as six (6), with the typical number being two (2) or three (3).

If the employer, organization, or program wants more than one letter, choose recommenders who can highlight different skills or strengths, or who can reflect on different kinds of work or study.

Employers, organizations, and programs typically ask for three (3) references. A good rule of thumb is always to have three (3) referees available to speak on your behalf.

Select people who are able to provide first-hand examples of your expertise, character, and work ethic. Examples include professors, academic advisors, graduate assistants, internship/work supervisors, professors, coaches, or community leaders.

You may ask the same people who are writing letters of recommendation to give you a reference.

Your recommender needs to know you well enough to compose a meaningful letter. We suggest that you meet with the writer, in person, to ask

  • whether the writer knows you well enough to be a recommender, and
  • whether the writer can draft a positive letter on your behalf

References typically come from faculty members or professionals in your field. You may choose to request references from previous supervisors, academic advisors, or faculty who can speak to your knowledge of a relevant field.

Use professional references (faculty, supervisors, academic advisors, etc.) rather than personal references (a friend’s parent, an uncle, your immediate family). Ask your reference if they are comfortable being listed and communicate if/when they may expect outreach from a potential employer or admission counselor. Be sure to verify their correct information (name, contact information, title, company or institution) before listing in any document or submitting online.

Depending on your comfort level with the individual, you may choose to visit, call, or email. Ask them respectfully if they are willing to be your reference, and wait for their reply; don’t just assume they will say yes.

Someone may decline to be your request because they feel they don’t know you well enough, or because they would not be able to provide a glowing recommendation of you. Keep in mind that you want a good reference, so if someone says no, it is probably for the best.

Get in touch with your recommenders as early as possible!

  • If you are requesting letters from faculty, we recommend that you make an appointment to meet with them at least two months before the deadline for submitting the letter
  • It takes time to write a good letter, and recommenders are often writing for many people
  • Please review the “How-to” Guide for requesting letters of recommendation. This guide includes an ideal timetable for faculty

It is important to call or write potential referees to get their permission to list their names before you give their names to an employer, organization, or program. Referees do not like surprise telephone calls! If you are requesting a reference by email from someone you haven’t seen in a while (such as a past professor), jog their memory by naming the context where you met. You can even say why you are asking them, e.g., “I really learned a lot about XYZ in your course.”

If the person says “yes,” ask what contact information (work vs. home) the referee would like to use.

People writing letters of recommendation appreciate it when you follow the steps below:

  • Make an appointment to talk in person with your recommender
  • Explain your goals and why you would like the person to be one of your recommenders
  • Give the person information about the position(s) for which you are applying
  • Give the person a copy of your transcript, a resume, a copy of related coursework or projects, and/or a copy of a research paper to assist the person in commenting on your strengths
  • Bring any official forms for the recommendation — along with stamped, addressed envelopes for convenience if the application asks for a recommendation by mail

Ask if you may share the following information to help your referee give a good reference:

  • Information about the position(s) for which you are applying
  • Your goals, including why you would like the person to be one of your referees
  • Discuss your strengths, weaknesses, leadership skills, and communication abilities with all references.
  • Copies of your resume, related coursework or projects, and/or a research paper to assist your referee in commenting on your strengths
  • Make sure you like what they have to say about you, otherwise you may need to obtain additional references.
  • Fill out this  request for letter of recommendation to help you identify why you are choosing a recommender and to give the person critical information about your request
  • Give your references a time frame for when you will be conducting your job search and how soon you will need the letters of recommendation. Keep references updated on the progress of your job search and be sure to thank them for their support.
  • Review the  LinkedIn Learning tutorial on asking for a recommendation

As you progress through the interview process, be sure to keep your references apprised of your interview status. Regardless of whether or not you were successful in obtaining the position, be sure to thank your references for their assistance.

Your list of references should be in a separate document from your resume. Sample Reference Sheet

How do you prepare a references document?

When employers, organizations, or programs ask you for references, they want you to give them a written reference sheet. follow the steps below:

  • Start your references document by duplicating the heading from your resume: name, telephone number, email, and LinkedIn URL
  • Write the word “REFERENCES” centered under your heading
  • Write the name, title, company or school, phone number, and email address for each reference; list in alpha order by last name
  • You may center your references on the page or align them with the left hand margin
  • Remove from your resume "References Available Upon Request" and create a separate document for your references
  • Save your reference sheet as a separate document to be uploaded or attached if applying online
  • Organize your documents so that your reference sheet follows your resume; cover letter, resume, and reference is the appropriate order
  • Be sure to upload or email in a PDF and review document beforehand

  • Tips for Personal Statement

Photo of LMU Campus

A graduate school Personal Statement is a document that conveys the motivating factors behind your desire to earn a graduate degree. This is an opportunity for applicants to highlight the perspectives and personal experiences that make you unique. While specific details required will vary based upon program, in all instances the Personal Statement is the admission committee’s attempt to better understand the applicant beyond academic and professional history. Before submitting your Personal Statement please review your desired program’s admission requirements, as some programs provide specific questions for applicants to answer in their Personal Statement.

Things to consider when writing your Personal Statement:

It is important to detail your reasons for pursing a master’s degree at your desired school of choice. Why that program? How can that program/university help you achieve your career goals? Avoid general statements, typically there is a personal story behind your decision to apply to graduate school.

Display your dedication and understanding of the career field you are interested in. Why are you drawn to this profession and what contributions could you add? Have an opinion of the current landscape of your desired career.

Graduate school is typically a collaborative process where students work closely with program faculty. Reviewing program faculty interests and analyzing how your interests align showcase a strong personal connection to the program.

Meticulously proofread your document before submitting. Analyze your writing style, grammar, punctuation, format, structure, flow, logical sequence of information, organization of information, etc.

Technology can be frustrating, especially in online learning. In a sea of computer applications (apps) and learning platforms, as well as hardware options (e.g. computers, tablets, video cameras, microphones), any number of issues can arise. The trick is to be prepared – take some time to review your technology needs before your course begins, and know when and how to contact Tech Support when problems arise.

LMU provides around the clock Tech Support, and our help desk colleagues will do their best to support you when you hit a wall with your technology. Contact information is listed at the bottom of this page.

Properly Prepare

Before you begin your course or program at the Center, it is recommended that you take some time to survey the tools you are using. Online learning requires all of us to be proactive in tending to our technology needs. The better prepared we are, the more familiar we are with tools we are using, the easier it will be to resolve issues when they arise.

Here are some things to consider:

  • First and foremost, is your contact information (most notably your email address) listed correctly? You can confirm this through your registration confirmation (if you registered online) or your student record in MyLMU.
  • Have you set up or reactivated your MyLMU account? Are you able to login and access the tools you need without difficulty?
  • Is the operating system (OS) for your computer or device up to date? Most problems arise when users are running apps, such as Zoom, on an older OS that may lack required security features. Please refer to the manufacturer specifications of your computer or device on this matter.
  • Have you installed the latest version of the online learning app (e.g. Zoom) and Internet browser (e.g. Chrome, Safari, Firefox) on your computer or device? Again, software companies issue regular updates to computer applications to keep up with security and user needs as they evolve.
  • If you have plugged in and are using an external video camera or microphone (meaning you are not using those that are built in), have you confirmed the compatibility of those plug-ins with your computer? Have you installed the appropriate software or “drivers”, if prompted, that allow those plug-ins to work on your computer?
  • Is your computer or device fully charged? Can you connect it to a power source when and if needed?
  • Do you have an adequate Internet connection, either through an ethernet cable or Wifi. Is the Wifi signal strong and secure? If you are using a shared WiFi (meaning more than one person or device is logged on), is the connection strong enough for your needs?
  • Have you tested your app ahead of time, perhaps with a friend, a fellow student, or a Tech Support team member?

There may be other factors to consider as you prepare for your online class or workshop, and we invite you to be in contact with Tech Support ahead of time with any questions you may have.

When your course begins, be sure to discuss “connectivity procedures” with your instructor. It’s important for all courses to outline and review procedures in the event you should suddenly become disconnected.

Contacting Tech Support

Technical support is provided by the  LMU Information Technology Services (ITS) service desk (or help desk, as it is also called).

From work devices to résumés: Resources to help you navigate a layoff

From tesla to amazon, more layoffs could be on the horizon. here’s how to prepare for your next interview..

lmu resume help

Nearly four months into 2024, companies are still cutting costs. Tesla, Amazon and Apple are among the latest big companies to cut jobs. The near future could bring more.

Many employers are still downsizing because of overly optimistic projections, consumers’ changing habits, technological advances such as generative artificial intelligence , and macroeconomic pressures. Whether your job has been cut or you worry you could see a layoff soon, there are several things you can do to get a head start on your next steps. Job experts suggest that it’s never a bad idea to be prepared.

“These layoffs are being driven by a return of pre-pandemic employment levels,” said Brett House, a professor in the economics division at Columbia Business School.

When it comes to layoffs, most are hitting the tech and financial sectors, House said, with major employers such as Microsoft, Salesforce, Google and Meta slashing thousands of jobs within the past year. Tesla joined the group this week, announcing plans to cut more than 10 percent of its global workforce. Earlier this month, Amazon said it’s laying off hundreds of employees who work on its physical stores technology and sales and marketing teams in its cloud computing division. And for the first time since the pandemic, Apple is making its first big cut, laying off more than 600 workers in California.

The announcement comes after a slew of layoffs at the beginning of the year. Companies including Google, Amazon, Walmart, Morgan Stanley, Disney, Wall Street giant BlackRock and San Francisco-based gaming company Unity reduced head count within the first several weeks of the year.

Overall, the labor market is strong, and hiring has continued despite the cuts, House said. Layoffs will probably continue as companies adjust, but barring a major event, such as a recession, House expects the big cuts to die down later this year.

For workers facing a potential layoff or for those who already have been cut, the stress of job hunting can be overwhelming. Help Desk can assist you in navigating the process, such as by informing you of what to do before returning your work devices, helping you prepare for an AI interview, and offering best practices for getting noticed by your next employer.

LMU-DCOM Honors Anatomical Donors at Memorial Service

Harrogate, Tennessee , April 15, 2024

By: Dakota Makres

donor memorial service

The Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) hosted its annual Donor Memorial Service on April 13 at the Harrogate campus.

“Each year, the LMU-DCOM Anatomical Donation Program honors our gracious donors and their final act of service to health professional education and research during the Donor Memorial Service,” said Dr. Adam Kolatorowicz, executive director of the anatomical donation program.

During the two years each donor is part of the anatomy program, LMU trains nearly 1,000 future physicians, 400 Physician Assistants, more than 150 Doctors of Physical Therapy, 150 Doctors of Occupational Therapy, 160 Doctors of Dental Medicine and 100 science graduate students, including PhDs and Masters of Anatomy.

Students shared how the important gift of donorship impacted both the Anatomical Donation Program and their personal journeys to becoming a healthcare professional. Following the service, family members were encouraged to meet the students and learn more about the impact their loved ones have made on the next generation of healthcare professionals.

In addition to LMU-DCOM student doctors, several other programs at LMU use the anatomy lab including Physician Assistant, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Dental Medicine, Doctorate of Anatomical Education, Master of Science and undergraduate/high school dual enrollment programs.

The Donor Memorial Service underscores the core values of the LMU-DCOM Anatomical Donation Program of Respect: Treat donors and their families with care and reverence, Integrity: Adhere to the highest legal and ethical standards, and Professionalism: Follow professional codes of conduct governing health care, education and research.

NJ Transit Northeast Corridor resumes limited service with canceled trains

  • Published: Apr. 16, 2024, 6:34 a.m.
  • Jeff Goldman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Limited service has resumed on NJ Transit’s heavily traveled Northeast Corridor line Tuesday morning after train service was suspended for hours due to overhead wire problems in Metuchen.

NJ Transit announced the resumption of service between Trenton and Rahway around 5:30 a.m. Service was suspended around 6 p.m. Monday, disrupting the evening commute for thousands.

Several trains have already been canceled this morning despite service resuming.

Amtrak, which owns and operates the Northeast Corridor tracks said the delays were caused by overhead power issued. Amtrak service resumed at 2 a.m., but multiple trains have been canceled due to equipment issues.
