Research Proposal Template FAQS

What types of research proposals can this template be used for.

The proposal template follows the standard format for academic research projects, which means it will be suitable for the vast majority of dissertations and theses (especially those within the sciences), whether they are qualitative or quantitative in terms of design.

Keep in mind that the exact requirements for the introduction chapter/section will vary between universities and degree programs. These are typically minor, but it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Is this template for an undergrad, Master or PhD-level proposal?

This template can be used for a research project at any level of study. Doctoral-level projects typically require the research proposal to be more extensive/comprehensive, but the structure will typically remain the same.

How long should my research proposal be?

The length of a research proposal varies by institution and subject, but as a ballpark, it’s usually between 1,500 and 3,000 words.

To be safe, it’s best to check with your university if they have any preferences or requirements in terms of minimum and maximum word count for the research propsal.

How detailed should the methodology of the proposal be?

You don’t need to go into the fine details of your methodology, but this section should be detailed enough to demonstrate that your research approach is feasible and will address your research questions effectively. Be sure to include your intended methods for data collection and analysis.

Can I include preliminary data or pilot study results in my proposal?

Generally, yes. This can strengthen your proposal by demonstrating the feasibility of your research. However, make sure that your pilot study is approved by your university before collecting any data.

Can I share this template with my friends/colleagues?

Yes, you’re welcome to share this template in its original format (no editing allowed). If you want to post about it on your blog or social media, we kindly request that you reference this page as your source.

What format is the template (DOC, PDF, PPT, etc.)?

The research proposal template is provided as a Google Doc. You can download it in MS Word format or make a copy to your Google Drive. You’re also welcome to convert it to whatever format works best for you, such as LaTeX or PDF.

Do you have templates for the other chapters?

Yes, we do. We are constantly developing our collection of free resources to help students complete their dissertations and theses. You can view all of our template resources here .

The MIT thesis template in LaTeX

The latex template.

The current MIT thesis template was developed in 2023, using up-to-date LaTeX coding, to meet the current formatting requirements of the MIT Libraries. The title and abstract pages are automatically laid out from information provided by the user. This template includes options to use a variety of fonts, and it is compatible with either pdfTeX or unicode engines such as luaLaTeX. When using LaTeX formats dated November 2022 or later, the resulting pdf file meets the PDF/A-2b archivability standard. A standard TeX Live installation includes all other packages required by the template.

This template was written by John Lienhard at the request of the MIT Libraries.

  • Documentation: Documentation for the template is available in pdf format here .
  • Download: The most current LaTeX files for this template are distributed through the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN): https://ctan.org/pkg/mitthesis Download
  • Overleaf.com: A copy of the thesis template is also present in Overleaf.com's template gallery, here . Overleaf includes all the packages in TeX Live, so no additional downloads are needed. Learn more about Overleaf at MIT .

Specifications for MIT theses

The formatting requirements for MIT theses are set by the MIT Libraries, as described at this url: http://libraries.mit.edu/archives/thesis-specs/ . Questions regarding these specifications should be directed to [email protected] .

The original LaTeX 2.09 template was written by Stephen Gildea in the late 1980s (also in CTAN, here ). That template was edited by many later students, leading to the files archived here.

LaTeX has changed greatly since the original MIT thesis template was written. LaTeX 2.09 was replaced by LaTeX2e in 1994. New engines were developed, particularly pdfTeX during the 1990s and Unicode-aware engines in the decades that followed. Many packages and fonts were developed to accompany the original platform, particularly after 2000; and major updates to the LaTeX kernel began in 2018. Over the years, the MIT Libraries have changed the required format several times, especially as electronic thesis submission has become the norm. The original template served MIT well; but by the early 2020s, it was substantially out of date. That situation motivated the creation of this new template.

Proposal Template

A proposal template is a LaTeX file that can be used to prepare the scientific justification of an ALMA proposal. It is not mandatory to use LaTeX: other formats, such as Word, Pages, etc can also be used as long as they can be turned into a pdf file and use at least 12pt characters. The pdf format is required to attach the justification to the proposal prepared in the Observing Tool (OT).

Regardless of format, the justification has to adhere to the maximum total number of pages, which is 4 for Regular, DDT, ToO, Phased Array, and mm-VLBI proposals, and 7 for Large Program proposals, where six pages should be allocated to the science case (as in previous cycles), and at least one page  should be allocated to an anonymized management plan, which was a separate document in previous cycles. Both page limits include  figures , tables and references . For more information, please see the ALMA Proposers Guide . For Large Programs, a one-page non-anonymized Team Expertise document needs to be uploaded separately in the OT.

For clarity, we provide two templates, corresponding to each of the page limits:

Download zip file containing the 4-page Template  for Regular, DDT, ToO, Phased Array, or mm-VLBI proposals

Download zip file containing the 7-page Template  for Large Program proposals only   (just 6 pages for the science case, see above)

NIH Grant Proposal

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides grants to researchers wishing to fund their research projects. The lengthy application requires a great deal of information regarding the proposed research and this template is meant to make the process easier by creating the document structure required for the application and providing examples of typical content. The template is primarily meant for the Specific Aims, Research Plan and Bibliography sections of the grant application but other parts (e.g., Budget Justification) can be created as additions to this template or subsequently created in a word processor.

Description

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides grants to researchers wishing to fund their research projects. The lengthy application requires a great deal of information regarding the proposed research and this template is meant to make the process easier by creating the document structure required for the application and providing examples of typical content. The template is primarily meant for the Specific Aims, Research Plan and Bibliography sections of the grant application but other parts (e.g., Budget Justification) can be created as additions to this template or subsequently created in a word processor. The author recommends making the Aims, Research Plan, and Bibliography all in one document and then splitting it up using your preferred method. The entire grant must have a shared, unified Bibliography and the components are submitted separately, generating the grant in one document ensures consistency in formatting and citations. Of course, you are responsible for making sure that you have all the required documents for your grant submission and this template is to facilitate formatting the Aims, Research Plan, and Bibliography in a consistent manner.

Use this template at your own risk. It conforms to the guidelines (as of 2013 when the template was created) but uses larger fonts for section headings and linespace than minimally required; you can squeeze more content into other formats, but the author believes this is a good balance of white space and text density for a 12 page proposal.

Some notes on the bibliobraphy: the original template the current template was adapted from did not use BibTeX; but instead used the \begin{thebibliography} environment; and then entered the bibliography in this file which can be distracting and overly complex. Instead, this template uses a BibTeX file and the nihunsrt.bst bibliography style written by Elana J Fertig. If you currently have your reference library in Endnote only, you can use Endnote to export it as a BibTeX file. In order to include the PMC and PubMed ID (which the nihunsrt.bst recognizes as PMC = field); you need to change the output style of BibTeX Export file in your Endnote library. With BibTeX Export style selected, go to Edit->Export Styles->Edit “BibTeX Export” …. under Templates, go to “Journal Articles,” add this entry: — | `PMC = `{PMCID}, ….. Then export — existing Endnote library to a BibTeX file that you can use. Unfortunately, you will have to manually enter the Key that defines each entry (e.g., Tatro2013). In the future, if you download the citation files from PubMed as BibTeX exports, it will contain the field. But if you need to migrate from a massive Endnote library, this process is necessary. Note also that Endnote exports “government documents” as @misc on the BibTeX file; and the nihunsrt.bst doesn’t handle this well; fix this by changing the article type to @article and for the Author field, put the Department, Agency (e.g., Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) which authored the report.

NeurIPS 2024 Call for Competitions

Communications Chairs 2024 2024 Conference

We are glad to announce the eighth edition of the competition track at NeurIPS 2024 . Through this call, we solicit competition proposals on topics of interest to the NeurIPS community.

We especially encourage submissions with a clear scientific question and from fields with a positive societal impact promoting causes that use AI to help disadvantaged communities. Besides societal impact, we seek proposals in areas where machine learning can positively influence other scientific, technological, or business domains. We hope that interesting competitions will attract a significant cross-section of interdisciplinary and diverse communities to our NeurIPS 2024 competition track.

Technological advances in our field can have the potential to disproportionately hurt marginalized sectors in society — including people of color, people from working-class backgrounds, women, and LGBTQ people. Hence, we strongly encourage proposals that address these problems, especially from researchers with these identities or who are members of other marginalized or under-represented communities.

Proposals should highlight an inclusiveness plan to promote diverse participation among both the organizing team and competitors. Separate recognition tiers to incentivize broad participation, such as recognizing top submissions from high school students or other participant groups are encouraged.  Organizers are encouraged to collaborate with affinity groups to host on-site bootcamps and other initiatives aimed at promoting diversity of participation.

NeurIPS 2024 will be hosting a dedicated Competition Track, where results will be presented and discussed by participants and organizers. The Competition Track is currently planned to be held in person at NeurIPS . Similar to last year, we request that the competition analysis paper be submitted to the NeurIPS 2025 D&B track; there will be no separate proceedings. Further details on the organization will be released in the following months.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

Competition proposals must both be submitted via OpenReview at: https://openreview.net/group?id=NeurIPS.cc/2024/Competition_Track

Note: Newly created profiles in OpenReview can take up to two weeks for approval, please plan accordingly

Please carefully follow the provided Latex template when preparing proposals.

Note that the guidelines and template have been updated from last year.

To reduce the reviewers’ workload, we will accept only 8 page submissions.

REVIEWING AND SELECTION PROCESS

A competition program committee will be formed, consisting of experts on both machine learning and challenges organization. Each proposal will be reviewed by members of the program committee. The factors that will be considered when evaluating proposals include:

  • Scientific relevance and Task(s): competitions should be motivated by clear scientific questions and curiosity. Impact, originality, and relevance to the NeurIPS community will all be considered. Tasks that include humanitarian and/or positive societal impact are highly encouraged, although other topics relevant to the NeurIPS community are also welcomed. If humanitarian projects are submitted, the involvement of the community in question is strongly desired, and “parachute science” is strongly discouraged.
  • Evaluation Protocol: Feasibility of the task chosen, baseline availability, sufficient data for training and testing algorithms to solve the proposed task, soundness of the evaluation criteria, and clarity and fairness of the competition rules will all be evaluated.
  • Logistics: The competition schedule, plan for attracting competition participants, and experience and diversity of the organizers will all be considered. The specific plan for attracting competition participants, including groups under-represented at NeurIPS, will be important during the review process.

PROCEEDINGS

This year, there are new publication requirements for competition reports co-authored by both organizers and participants. Similar to last year, accepted competitions in 2024 will be required to submit their post-competition analyses as papers to the 2025 NeurIPS D&B track (next year). In order to ensure that the competition proposal and results are consistent, reviewers in 2025 will have access to the 2024 proposals. To minimize experimental bias, any deviations from the proposal will need to be justified.

IMPORTANT DATES (anywhere on earth)

  • Competition proposal submission deadline: March 27, 2024
  • Acceptance notification: April 17, 2024
  • 2023 Competition track: December 9-14, 2024

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Competition organizers should propose a timeline for running the competition to ensure participants have enough time to contribute high-quality entries. It is recommended that competitions be launched in May and completed by the end of October 2024 at the absolute latest.

Competition organizers that require help or suggestions regarding competition platforms for running the competition can contact the competition chairs for advice.
