Our National Game Hockey

Field Hockey is the National Sport of our Country. The designation of ‘National Sport’ is either designated on the basis of the popularity of a Game, or on the basis of the Game’s historical background. Hockey has a long-standing rich legacy, and this fact also gives this Sport the credibility of being the ‘National Game’ of our Country, India. Added to this, another obvious reason for designating this Sport as the National Sport of the Country, for the pride that is always evoked by the Countrymen.

In order to play this Game, this Game is required to be conducted either on plain grass or on a mat-like material called the turf. India displayed phenomenal performance in Hockey at various International forums during the 1920-1950s period and this was yet another reason for accepting this Game as a National Sport in this Country.

Playing field Hockey is a popularly played Sport in our Country, which is played by forming teams. This Game is played on grass, on artificial or watered turf, or on synthetic fields. The team has ten players in total and a Goalkeeper.

Hockey is played with a curved stick in the form of the letter ‘J’. The aim here is to move the ball forward to the Goal post with the curved end of the stick and thereby scoring a Goal. The strikers who play this Game are exceptionally skilled at hitting the targets, this will help them to shoot their shots successfully and make them enter the Goal post. While the Goalkeeper gets the responsibility of hurdling and stopping the Goals so that they can stop the opposite team from scoring.

Hockey is a Sport that requires a lot of practice and dedication. The Game is played usually on a rectangular field, and this is considered to be an outdoor Sport. The Goalkeeper stands near the Goal post wearing a heavily padded jersey and helmets also with a curved Hockey stick. The Goalkeeper is required to wear protective suits because the ball, striking with the Hockey stick, rushes towards the Goal post at a highly accelerated speed, if the Goalkeeper does not wear a padded suit this may cause severe injuries to the Goalkeeper.

The Game starts with a toss between the captains of the two distinct teams. The captain who wins the toss will either select his side of the field where his team will play or he chooses to pass. The Game is played for 75 minutes in a single session. There are two rounds of each thirty-five minutes and one break in between the two sessions. The interval time is used for medications, strategic planning, also for treatment.

This was where a crude form of hockey was initially played. This was around 4000 years ago and 1000 BC respectively. There is also evidence available in museums that show that hockey was also played by Greeks, Romans and Indians centuries ago. Our country has created a stellar record in the field of hockey after winning six Olympic gold medals and various matches in a row. The time when India won various hockey matches in a row is termed as the golden period of hockey (the period between 1928 and 1956). The famous player of the golden era was Dhyan Chand, and because of his outstanding achievements, he is known as the magician of hockey.

History and Origin of Hockey

Hockey is an ancient game played in India from years back. It is played with a hockey stick and ball. It was in Ireland before 1272 BC, and before 600 BC. It was played in ancient Greece during the East. Hockey has many forms; For example, field hockey, ice hockey, sledge hockey, roller hockey, road hockey, etc. Nowadays, field hockey is commonly played. Ice hockey is the exact opposite of field hockey, which is played on the icy plains of Canada and North America.

equipment needed to play hockey

Playing hockey safely requires stance devices, namely helmets, neck guards, shoulder pads, knee pads, elbow pads, jaxtraps with cup pockets, and protective cups (for men's genitals). Cup for defense), hockey stick, and a ball.

form of hockey

Other forms of hockey (which are derived from hockey or its predecessors) such as; Air Hockey, Beach Hockey, Ball Hockey, Box Hockey, Deck Hockey, Floor Hockey, Foot Hockey, Gym Hockey, Mini Hockey, Rock Hockey, Pound Hockey, Power Hockey, Roussel Hockey, Stacker Hockey, Table Hockey, Under Water Hockey, Unicycle Hockey, etc.

future of hockey in india

As we all know, the really good time of the game of hockey has passed since the golden age in India. This is due to the lack of interest in hockey and the lack of qualified players, as well as the lack of necessary facilities to the youth to keep the sport regular in future. Looks like it will never end and the golden age of hockey will return because of the love, respect and respect people have for hockey. However, to bring back the golden age of hockey in India requires more efforts, dedication and support from the Indian government. Indian Hockey League is planning to implement some impressive strategies to increase the hockey teams (8 teams by 2016 and 10 teams by 2018). In the coming three seasons (6 match tournament from 2016 to 2018) there is a favorable agreement between Indian Hockey and Australian Hockey.

Hockey is the national sport of India. It is only said that however, it has not been officially announced yet. Now it is our responsibility to bring back the golden era of hockey and make it officially declared a national sport. For this, the children should be encouraged by the teachers, parents and the government along with promoting them to the high level by providing them all the facilities from the time of school.

500 Words Essay on Indian Sports

India, a country with a rich cultural and historical heritage, has a diverse sports landscape. The country’s sports spectrum ranges from traditional games, such as kabaddi and kho-kho, to international sports like cricket, football, and hockey. This essay delves into the evolution, current status, challenges, and future prospects of Indian sports.

Historical Overview

India’s sports history is as old as its civilization. Ancient texts like the Mahabharata and Ramayana depict the existence of sports like chariot racing and archery. During the medieval period, wrestling and polo gained popularity. The colonial era introduced modern sports such as cricket, football, and hockey, with cricket eventually becoming a national obsession.

Current Scenario

Cricket is undoubtedly the most popular sport in India, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) being a global phenomenon. However, other sports are also gaining traction. The Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League (football) have successfully increased the popularity of their respective sports. The government’s ‘Khelo India’ initiative aims to promote a sports culture at the grassroots level.

International Achievements

India’s performance in international sports events has been a mixed bag. The country has produced world-class cricketers, and the national team has bagged multiple World Cups. In hockey, India has a record eight Olympic gold medals. However, India’s performance in the Olympics has been underwhelming, with notable exceptions like Abhinav Bindra’s gold in shooting and P.V. Sindhu’s silver in badminton.

Despite the progress, Indian sports face numerous challenges. Infrastructure and training facilities are often inadequate, especially in rural areas. There is a lack of a robust sports culture, and academic pressure often sidelines sports. Corruption and mismanagement in sports bodies have also hampered growth.

Future Prospects

The future of Indian sports looks promising. The success of leagues like IPL and ISL suggests a market for diverse sports. Government initiatives like ‘Fit India’ and ‘Khelo India’ aim to foster a sports culture. Moreover, with increased international exposure and better training facilities, Indian athletes are poised to make a mark on the global stage.

Indian sports, with its rich history and growing popularity, is at a crucial juncture. While challenges persist, the increasing recognition of sports’ importance and the growing aspirations of young athletes signify a bright future. It is hoped that with sustained efforts, Indian sports will continue to evolve and achieve greater heights on the global platform.
