You can very quickly and very easily add your Facebook Reviews tab on your official page. Just complete these straightforward steps:

  • Log in to your account and go to your business Facebook page ;

Option 1: Copy the reviews page URL

To get your Facebook Reviews link, you have to follow two simple steps:

  • Log in to your Facebook page —start by logging into your Facebook account and navigating to your official business page;
  • Add ‘/review’ to your page URL —find the browser address bar, click at the end of it, and then simply type ‘/review’ after your page URL;
  • Copy the URL to share it —simply copy the entire string you see in the address bar for future use. For instance, https://www.facebook.com/embedreviews/reviews is EmbedSocial’s Facebook Reviews page link – as shown below:

  • Utilize the Facebook login URL ->  www.facebook.com/login/
  • Put a redirect to your reviews page by adding “next” ->  www.facebook.com/login/?next=
  • Convert your page URL into the corresponding equivalent in HTML and add it after the “next” component ->  https://www.facebook.com/login/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fembedreviews%2Freviews%2F

As you can see, it’s not complicated at all! Just replace the colon (:) with %3A and the slash (/) with %2F. That way, whenever the customer logs in to their account, they’ll be redirected to your reviews page. Works like a charm every time!

How can your customers leave you Facebook reviews?

Since the introduction of the ‘Recommendations’ review system, your clients will no longer have to select a number of stars to describe your products and/or services. They only have to navigate to your page’s ‘Reviews’ tab or follow the above ‘Reviews’ link.

Over the last few years, Facebook has joined the ranks of Yelp and Google as one of the most important resources for local businesses .

In fact, an increasing number of potential customers look at Facebook recommendations prior to considering reviews from Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other traditional review websites. Facebook was second only to Google in some of the most recent surveys of customer online recommendation engagement .

For this reason, it has become increasingly essential that local businesses take their Facebook presence seriously.

In 2019, Facebook changed its rating system from a star-based system (similar to Google) to a recommendation system . In this system, people can either recommend a business or not, similar to Facebook’s famous “like” system.

Because of this, you should consider “reviews” and “recommendations” synonymous on Facebook.

In this guide, we will show you how to create a Facebook business page, how to turn on Facebook recommendations, and how to monitor and respond to these recommendations in a way that will improve your online reputation and ensure that you are using Facebook in the most effective and beneficial way possible.

Creating a Facebook Business Page

The first step to boosting your business’s online presence through Facebook is, of course, creating a Facebook page. In order to create a Facebook business page, you must have a personal Facebook account through which the business page can be managed. Assuming that you already have a personal Facebook account, creating your business page is simple enough.

There are two ways to go about it.

Option 1 : Creating your Business Page from the Facebook landing page .

If you’ve ever looked closely at the Facebook home page, you’ll notice that there is a small link at the bottom of the page that says, “Create a page for a celebrity, band, or business.”

Click on that link to get started.

After clicking that link, you’ll be taken to a page where you can choose which type of page to create. Click on the “Get Started” button under the “Business or Brand” category.

At this point, Facebook will prompt you to log in to your personal account.

After you enter your email address and password you can get started building your business page. 

The first information you need to provide is the name of your Business Page and its category. Facebook has a wide variety of categories available, including some as specific as “Smoothie Bar” or “Raw Food Restaurant.”

Once you select the proper category, your page will be created and you can move onto customization.

Option 2: Creating your page from the dashboard of your personal Facebook account .

If you’re already logged into your personal Facebook account, you can also access the page creation menu from the regular Facebook dashboard.

There should be a button that says “Create” in the top menu bar to the right of your profile picture.

Click on that button and a dropdown menu will appear. 

The first option in that dropdown menu is “Page.”

Click on that button and it will take you directly to the Page creation screen. Once you are there, click on the “Business or Brand” option and give your page a name and category.

Your new Business Page will be created and ready to customize!

Customizing your Business Page and Allowing Recommendations

Once your page is created, the first thing you should do is upload a profile picture and cover photo for your business. Facebook recommends a profile picture of 170x170 px and a cover photo of 820x312 px.

Many businesses choose to display their logo here, but the choice is ultimately up to you. 

After your profile picture and cover photo are selected, you should write a short description for your business and perhaps an introductory post.

Customizing your Business Page and Allowing Recommendations

Facebook is engineered to walk you through these steps with an easy-to-follow tutorial throughout the page creation process. 

Once all the details are in place, it is important to ensure that your page is accepting Facebook recommendations. This should be the default option for most pages, but it is always good to check and ensure that your customers can give you feedback and boost your online reputation. To enable Facebook recommendations, click on the “Settings” tab in your page dashboard.

Once you are in Settings, click on the “Templates and Tabs” section on the left-hand side of the page.

The “Templates and Tabs” section allows you to add and remove the different sections on the left-hand menu that your guests see when they visit your Facebook page, such as “Events”, “Photos”, and “Offers”.

Make sure that “Reviews” is listed as an available tab. It appears that Facebook still uses the term “Reviews” for the recommendations tab on your page. When setting up your account if you are presented with the option to show a “Recommendations” tab, select that. The effect will be the same.

If it’s not, switching your Template to “Business” should automatically add “Reviews” as an option. You can also add “Reviews” yourself using the “Add a Tab” button at the bottom of the screen.

The three horizontal bars at the edge of each tab allow you to sort the menu.

If you’d like, you can move “Reviews” up to either the top or near the top so that your customers always see it when they go to your Facebook page. 

Facebook Recommendations

With recommendations enabled and your Facebook business page personalized and ready to go, you should be ready to receive customer feedback and recommendations.

In this next section, we will talk about what those reviews look like as they come in and how to maximize your Facebook recommendations to improve your online reputation, attract new customers, get more reviews and keep your existing customers coming back.

Your Facebook Star Rating

As we mentioned in the introduction, in 2019 Facebook changed their rating system from a “reviews” style system to a “recommendations” system.

Facebook also added other features to the recommendation system, including the ability to tag recommendations and add photos to recommendations to give them more context.

Despite the fact that customers are not actually assigning individual star ratings anymore, Facebook will still calculate an overall star rating for your business based on the average number of people who recommend your business.

This rating will appear directly above the number of “likes” that you have, on the right-side of the page.

You must receive a certain number of recommendations before Facebook will calculate an overall star rating, although the exact number of recommendations that you need has never been explicitly revealed by Facebook.

Individual recommendations will come directly into your notifications as they are received, but they are also accessible by clicking on the box that includes your overall star rating.

Once you are on the review screen, you can sort your various recommendations either by “most helpful” or “most recent” to see what your customers are saying about your business.

The “most helpful” determination is based on the amount of feedback other customers gave to the review, most notably based on how many “likes” each review received.

Your customers can access the page that lists all your public recommendations in the same manner, by clicking on the overall rating on the right-hand side of your page. When they do so, Facebook will automatically display recommendations from their Facebook friends and colleagues first, if any exist.

Certain reviews may not be visible to everyone, as Facebook’s privacy settings allow customers to choose who is able to see their posts. For example, they can allow the Public to see their review, or only their Facebook friends.

We will touch on this again later on.

When recommendations come in, they will say either that a customer “recommends” or “does not recommend” your business.

If it is a positive recommendation, a red star will be displayed close to the name of the person leaving the recommendation.

If it is a negative review, or a “does not recommend,” the star will be gray.

Currently, Facebook does not allow you to delete a recommendation or review on your page.

However, you can report the recommendation, and Facebook may remove it if it violates one of their policies . 

To report a recommendation, click on the three dots on the right-hand side of the recommendation. A dropdown menu will appear; select the option “Find Support or Report Recommendation.”

Facebook will determine whether or not to remove the content.

Usually, Facebook will only remove it if it contains spam or abusive content. They will not remove a recommendation simply because it is a negative or unfavorable to the business.

Can Other People Comment on Facebook Recommendations?

Yes, people aside from the business and the original recommender are able to comment on Facebook recommendations.

When this happens, it is usually friends or associates of the original recommender, although sometimes it is other customers or random bystanders.

This is important to remember when you craft your responses.

Hidden Facebook Recommendations Exist, But They Do Not Affect Your Star Rating.

Customers can potentially leave you a recommendation that you are unable to see or interact with.

Because of Facebook’s privacy settings, your customers are able to decide whether or not to make the recommendation public, or only available to their chosen friends and colleagues.

Facebook will not use these private recommendations in calculating your star rating. It may be a good idea to remind satisfied customers to make their recommendation public so that it will count toward your Facebook star rating and improve your overall online reputation.

Now that your business is collecting recommendations, how do you answer them?

What is the best way to interact with customers online?

The most important thing to remember is that you should reply to every recommendation, whether positive or negative, and ensure that every customer feels heard and accommodated. There are a few different guidelines to answering recommendations which we will discuss now.  

Answering Positive Recommendations

When customers leave a positive recommendation, they are sharing their appreciation for the work you are doing.

The best response is to share your appreciation for them in return.

Thank the customer for taking the time to leave you a recommendation and let them know that you are grateful for their business. A good response would include the name of the customer, a short note of appreciation, and perhaps an invitation to work with them again in the future.

The customer will be notified as soon as you respond, through their Facebook notifications.

In the response example above, the customer is addressed by name and the salesperson who assisted the customer is also named and congratulated.

This is a great example of personalization, which is essential to a good positive recommendation response.

Writing a personal response ensures that the customer knows that you read their recommendation, and that you appreciate it. 

Keeping with the theme of personalization, it is important to avoid robotic or canned responses. There is a temptation to rely on response templates, particularly when a recommender is satisfied and not looking for confrontation, but it is relatively easy for customers to see through this.

Instead, it is best practice for businesses to personally respond to every recommendation and ensure that each customer feels heard.

Answering Negative Recommendations

When a customer does not recommend your business on Facebook, it can be tempting to jump straight to the defense.

Remember that your customer is likely looking for an outlet to express frustration and a defensive response may prompt further negative reactions.

This can quickly spiral out of control.

On Facebook in particular, it is very important to keep unseemly fighting or negativity out of the public eye. Regardless of how unreasonable the negative commentary, the most essential aspect of a negative recommendation response is moving the conversation out of public view.

A great response will express genuine concern for the customer’s feelings and offer another outlet for the customer to have their concerns addressed.

Providing a phone number is usually the best practice, but an email address can do as well.

Showing compassion and giving contact information ensures that the customer feels heard and takes the first step towards moving the conversation outside the view of the broader public. What the public does see is a responsive and accommodating business who doesn’t ignore negative feedback but instead addresses the concerns of their customers directly. 

It is nearly impossible to prevent all negative recommendations and there is some indication that you wouldn’t want to even if you could .

However, every business can change how they respond to negative feedback. Doing so will help ensure that your loyal customers stay loyal, and that potential customers see your business in the best light.

Everything You Need to Know about Facebook Reviews

Are you a local business that gets reviews?  Reviews can be very powerful to draw in new customers.  Recent studies have shown that 88% of people trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations .  That’s HUGE!

Also Reviews show up much more prominently on mobile devices which is when people are near your location.   Allowing people to leave a review for your location on Facebook is a good idea and gives social proof to potential customers.

UPDATE:  Facebook Reviews are available for any type of Page.  All you need to do is to add the Review tab to your Page.  I think Reviews can be a valuable form of social proof for any type of business.

Here is everything you need to know about Facebook Reviews.   **This article contains updates from the original post.

1.  How to Enable Reviews or turn them off

The Ratings and Reviews feature (where you see the star rating on the main Facebook page) is available for any type of Page. For many types of Pages, the Reviews tab is on by default, reviews and star ratings are displayed. However, you can hide the Reviews tab if you want.

First go to to the Settings section on your Facebook Page and select Edit Page from the left sidebar.

Next scroll down to the Reviews section and make sure the Tab is set to On.  You may have to add a tab if you don’t see the Reviews tab there. Note that you can also get the direct URL address of your Reviews tab here to send to your customers.

If you turn the Reviews off and then back on later, all the previous Reviews you have received will still be there.

2.  Responding to Reviews

As a Page owner, respond to the reviews by either Liking the review or posting a comment.  Do this for both positive and negative reviews.

3.  Deleting a Negative Review (Spoiler Alert: You Can’t)

Many Page owners wonder how they can delete a negative review.  In general, this is not a good practice – it’s better to respond to a negative review so that people who are looking at the reviews see that if there is a problem with your product or service, you care enough to correct the situation.

If you have a negative review, respond thoughtfully and try and take the situation offline (ask if they can give you a call or send an e-mail).  If you correct the situation, you can always ask the reviewer to post an update or even edit or delete the review.

If there is a text review along with a star rating, you can Report the Post to Facebook.  They will then decide if the review doesn’t meet their community guidelines and take it down if that is the case.  (And of course, I wouldn’t want to report this nice review)

Report a review to Facebook

Remember that reviews can be an indication of a real problem in your business if you are getting too many negative reviews.  Look at negative reviews as an opportunity.

You could also try and message the reviewer to see if they would take the review down.  Only the person who posted a review or Facebook can remove a review.

If you don’t want reviews to display at all, you can uncheck the box to display reviews but all the reviews that you have received will still remain if you enable them again in the future.

4.  Reviews and Featured Videos

When you enable Reviews and the Map on your Facebook Page, the map shows up in the about section on the left sidebar along with the reviews.

When you have the map enabled, you can’t have a Featured Video that shows up in your About section on your left sidebar.  So that is one downside is that your Featured Video doesn’t show up as prominently but it’s much better to make it easy to find out your location.

Great question Mauro – unfortunately there is no way to “share” the review other than to cut and paste it into a Status update – maybe a “thanks for this great review that just came in from Jane” type of thing. You could also link to the Review tab. Or you could take a screenshot of it and send it out as a photo update. Hope that helps spark some good ideas!

Facebook now allow people to post anonymous star ratings. Um; not everything I need to know. As a photographer, I check in and post photos with locations. Recently, FB started asking me to write reviews and if I don’t, it keeps asking me again and again, nonstop, sometimes every 10 minutes. How can I turn this off; it’s driving me crazy?!?

Hi Andrea, I’m trying to get reviews on my facebook App page. I have enabled reviews in the settings. User can click and write their reviews (and choose the number off stars) but somehow they are not able to save the review (clicking ‘done’ does not result in an action). How does Facebook decide which reviews are “Most Helpful”? We really need to know this, because 95 of our 105 reviews are 5-star reviews. but two of the negative reviews are classified by Facebook as “Most Helpful”. Hi Kelsey, unfortunately no one has so far sent any suggestions. However, we believe that getting people to comment on posts may cause these posts to be categorized by Facebook as “Most Helpful”. Also Reviews show up much more prominently on mobile devices which is when people are near your location. Allowing people to leave a review for your location on Facebook is a good idea and gives social proof to potential customers.

In late November 2023, we received reader mail that asked about a specific Facebook rumor. According to the emails, the rumor was about Facebook posts that claimed that typing an "@" symbol in a comment box, selecting the word "highlight" from a pop-up menu and then submitting the comment would allow a user to see which friends had been lurking on their profile or page more than anyone else.

The gist of this rumor was that this supposed "@" and "highlight" method would produce a small list of Facebook friends, perhaps family members, close friends and maybe even anyone who was secretly and romantically attracted to the user.

'Type @ in the Comments'

One version of this rumor was shared as follows: "Type @ in the comments and then click highlight to see who’s always checking your profile. If it turns blue you got page watchers."

A Facebook rumor claimed that the @ symbol and the word highlight would show page or profile watchers.

It's Not Real

However, here's the truth: This rumor is false. While users who post photos and videos to Facebook stories and Instagram stories truly are able to see who has viewed their content, there's no truth to the idea that there's a secret way to find out which users have specifically been looking at a Facebook profile.

It's Also Not Possible

As the social media company once noted on its own official help center website, "Facebook doesn't let people track who views their profile." Also, third-party apps don't provide this functionality, either, according to the page.

The Legitimate Reason @highlight Exists

To test the "@" and "highlight" rumor, we chose a Facebook post (a scam post that falsely claimed investors on "Shark Tank" endorsed keto weight loss gummies) and simply typed out "@highlight." Before posting the comment, a menu popped up that listed various Facebook pages that included the word "highlight" in them. Near the bottom of the list, "@highlight" was mentioned with the words, "Some friends might receive notifications."

A Facebook rumor claimed that the @ symbol and the word highlight would show page or profile watchers.

Upon selecting the "@highlight" feature with the words about friends receiving notifications and then posting the comment, the "@highlight" text turned blue and turned into a link. Clicking on this link simply led to a Facebook page that displayed pending friend requests. The link did not display any current Facebook friends who might be repeatedly viewing a user's profile. (The URL that the "@highlight" link led to was facebook.com/find-friends/browser .)

As for the "@highlight" comment feature itself, Distractify.com published in October 2023 that its legitimate purpose is to allow users "to highlight a particular post by increasing its size and visibility." We reached out to Facebook for more details and will update this story if we receive a response.

Why Some Users Shared the Rumor

Aside from the innocent users who were sharing the viral posts because they believed the false rumor, the Rick's Daily Tips website reported that some profiles and pages were also spreading the "hoax" in order to boost engagement via likes, comments and shares. In theory, this strategy would potentially attract more users to help a profile or page grow with followers, perhaps making it valuable enough in the future to be sold to scammers. The original creator of the profile or page also might opt to use it to create malicious posts or ads that violate Meta's policies, writer Rick Rouse added.

As a general rule, we don't recommend placing blind trust in viral copy-and-paste posts that describe supposed secrets of Facebook's functionality. Such dubious rumors have been spread for the nearly two decades of the social media platform's existence, such as the false claim that copying and pasting a specific block of text will help a user to remove ads and display more content from friends. These kinds of rumors simply aren't true.

Internet Connection Types Explained -- and Ranked Best to Worst

Not all internet is the same. Here's what separates each internet connection type, why it matters and how to tell what kind of connection you have.

When comparing internet providers in your area , you're most likely checking available speeds and pricing along with the fine-print details like data caps and equipment fees. There's another factor to consider that is equally as important but easy to overlook: the connection type, or what technology your internet service provider uses to send internet to your home. We at CNET have encountered them all and can tell you first-hand the difference the connection type can make .

ISPs use wired or wireless connections (or a mix of the two). Wired connection types -- meaning a wire is connected directly to your home -- include  fiber-optic , coaxial cable and copper (DSL) internet. Satellite internet , fixed wireless and the increasingly popular 5G home internet round out your potential wireless internet options.

So what's the difference between them all? This guide will walk you through the different types of internet connections that may be available in your area, how they work and what limitations you can expect from them. Connection types are listed in order of most to least recommended.

Locating local internet providers

Fiber internet: The best, but least available

Fiber-optic internet uses long, thin strands (fibers) of glass or plastic to send data as light signals. The result is speed and reliability that are superior to other connection types.

Fiber-optic can deliver download speeds as fast as 10 gigabits (10,000 megabits per second) or higher -- fast enough to download a 2-hour movie in HD in less than a minute -- but you're likely to find max download speeds around 1,000 to 5,000Mbps from most fiber-optic providers.

Upload speeds , which are essential for working and learning from home, uploading to videos to social media and gaming online, are also significantly faster with fiber-optic service and typically mirror download speeds. No other connection type can deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds like fiber-optic internet.

Pricing for the ultraspeedy plans can easily run you $100 or more per month, but most providers also offer slower speed tiers (if speeds of 100 to 1,000Mbps can be considered  slow ) for $40 to $90 per month. Other connection types may present slightly lower introductory prices, depending on the available providers in your area, but when you take into account the speeds you get for the price you pay, you're likely to find the best value with fiber internet.

Availability is the only real disadvantage with fiber. Laying enough fiber-optic cables to connect entire cities and regions is a huge logistical challenge , and with lots of competition and red tape to cut through, it's been slow going for any of the major service providers to expand coverage to underserved areas. Consequently, fiber internet is only available to around 40% of US households and primarily those in urban areas, according to the Federal Communications Commission .

Cable internet delivers a connection to your home via copper coaxial cable -- the same as traditional cable TV.

Cable internet: Your standard connection

Cable internet lacks the full speed potential and reliability of fiber-optic service, but it's much more widely accessible. Cable is one of the most common types of internet connections -- available to nearly 90% of US households -- and you'll often find it bundled with TV packages . That makes sense, because cable internet uses the same coaxial connections as cable TV. 

Though not as speedy as fiber internet, cable internet service is still one of the fastest connection types. Most cable providers offer a variety of speed options, including a gigabit plan with download speeds around 940Mbps. Upload speeds are a much different story, however, as few cable internet providers deliver upload speeds above 50Mbps. Speed reliability can also be a concern with cable internet as the connection type is susceptible to network congestion and slowed speeds, especially during peak usage times.

Cable internet pricing varies quite a bit among providers, but cable is, for the most part, one of the more affordable internet connection types. You can get a broadband connection from providers like Astound, Mediacom and Xfinity starting at around $30 per month or less. Spectrum, another big name in cable internet, has a higher starting price at around $40 per month but comes with max download speeds of 300Mbps.

This portable Netgear Nighthawk mobile router takes an incoming 5G signal and broadcasts it out as a Wi-Fi network your nearby devices can use to get online. If you wire it to a dedicated Wi-Fi router, the connection can cover a wider area.

5G home internet: A growing wireless alternative

Mobile internet is largely designed for your phone, but as the technology improves and speeds increase, 5G mobile connections are becoming more practical for home internet use. 

With this internet connection type, a cell carrier such as T-Mobile or Verizon sends 5G signals in all directions. Many are picked up by cellphones, but for home internet, a router receives those signals and turns them into a home connection. It's a great way to get broadband without the need for running a line to your home or in some cases, dealing with the companies that have run those lines -- ISPs are notorious for low customer satisfaction ratings .

If you're living in a city or another area with strong cellular infrastructure, you might be able to connect over 5G, with providers like Verizon offering speeds up to 1Gbps . You'll also find cellular internet plans that use LTE, the previous generation of technology, or a mix of LTE and 5G.

When shopping for mobile internet for home use, it's probable that you will only have one or two plans to choose from with a flat rate for whatever speeds are available at your address. T-Mobile offers a single 5G plan ($60 per month for download speeds ranging from 72 to 245Mbps), while Verizon offers two ($50 or $70 per month for download speeds ranging from 50 to 300Mbps or 85 to 1,000Mbps, respectively).

Notable cellular internet providers

Fixed wireless internet: also wireless, but with a few strings attached.

Another wireless internet option -- but one that may come with more steps and equipment while delivering slower speeds and less data -- is fixed wireless. Similar to 5G, fixed wireless providers send internet signals over the air. But unlike 5G, you'll need a mounted receiver with a direct line of sight to the nearest tower to receive those signals. Hills, trees, buildings or other obstacles nearby can distort or outright block your connection.

Fixed wireless internet speeds often range from 5 to 50Mbps. There are many variables that can affect the quality of the incoming signal, including distance from a local tower, so your available speeds may vary. Regardless of the speeds you can get, expect flat-rate pricing or around $50 per month. Plans also typically come with a monthly data cap of 200 to 300GB, depending on the provider.

Though fixed wireless has traditionally been a rural internet option, the connection type is rapidly expanding in metro areas thanks to providers like Google Fiber and Starry Internet. Instead of beaming services to individual residences, these providers send internet signals to entire buildings, such as an apartment complex, then run service to individual units via an Ethernet cable. These providers are capable of delivering speeds much faster than traditional fixed wireless service with gigabit speeds available in select areas.

DSL internet: A last resort before satellite

DSL (that's "digital subscriber line") is a fixed connection most popular in areas without access to cable or fiber internet. With DSL, your connection to the internet runs through copper phone lines. it's similar to dial-up service in that regard, but DSL is significantly faster than dial-up and won't tie up your phone line. 

DSL internet is best for those in rural communities looking for a somewhat reliable and affordable internet connection. While it does lack the speed potential of pretty much every other internet type, it is typically a cheaper and sometimes faster alternative to satellite internet. Since DSL uses existing phone lines to deliver service, availability is high and providers can keep prices relatively low.

With satellite internet, your connection comes from radio-equipped satellites in Earth's orbit. You'll need a dish to receive the signal.

Satellite internet: When there are no other options

Satellite internet is the most widely available type of internet because it doesn't rely on ground-laid infrastructure like cables, cellular towers or line-of-sight antenna connections. Instead, you'll use a mounted dish to connect with geostationary satellites orbiting miles overhead. If you have a clear view of the southern sky, there's a pretty good chance that there's a satellite provider willing to install a dish and offer you service, for a price.

On average, today's satellite internet providers offer speeds that typically vary from 12 to 100Mbps. In most cases, that makes it a suitable option for smaller households who want to stream video, browse the internet and update social media. 

New satellite providers -- namely Elon Musk's Starlink network , which began expanding service in select areas the last few years and  Amazon's Project Kuiper  -- are promising to bump those speeds up by using low Earth orbit satellites that are closer to the ground. That means that the signal doesn't need to travel as far, which also makes for a reduction in latency, or lag.

Increased competition in the satellite internet industry may help bring costs down for the consumer. Currently, satellite internet is the most expensive internet connection type, by far. Starting prices for satellite internet are around $60 per month, but that's often for slow speeds and low data allowances. If you want faster speeds or more data, satellite internet can quickly get up to $150 to $200 per month, and equipment fees will add another $15 or so to your monthly bill.

So which kind of internet connection is right for you? It depends on several factors. The first thing to think about is your typical usage, and how much speed you really need . If you plan to surf the web and check email only, you can get away with a slower connection, but smaller households with users who stream videos, play games online, or upload files for work or school will ideally want access to download speeds of at least 100Mbps.

Costs are another key factor, obviously. Some providers bundle their various services to offer you a discount , but be aware that the promotional pricing might not last as long as the service contract. In that case, you'll pay more for the same service during the second year, for example.

In the end, the biggest factor is likely beyond your control and that's your location. Some parts of the US have lots of options for getting online, while others hardly have any options at all. 

Whatever choices are available to you, understanding the different technologies at play will help you know what to expect before you sign up.

Satellite internet may have the ability to deliver 100Mbps download speeds, but the 20Mbps upload speed is a difficult threshold to cross, meaning satellite internet does not meet the requirements of a broadband connection in many cases.

What does Meta AI do? The latest upgrade creates images as you type and more.

All the big tech companies are trying to best each other with the ‘Hey, look what our artificial intelligence can do now’ updates, and on Thursday, Facebook parent company Meta rolled out its latest upgrade in a version called Llama 3 . 

Unlike previous Llama releases, Llama 3 has its dedicated website (meta.ai), where you can use the tool for free. It’s a riff on the ChatGPT formula – no charge, go and talk to it and see what it can do for you. The catch, of course, is that you log into it with a Facebook account. 

“Big day here. We're releasing the new version of Meta AI, our assistant, that you can ask any question across our apps and our glasses,” Meta Platform CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement sent to USA TODAY. “We built it into the search box right at the top of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, so anytime you have a question, you can just ask it right there. We're also releasing a bunch of unique creation features. Meta AI now creates animations and creates high-quality images so fast that it generates and updates images for you in real-time as you're typing.” 

Some of my friends already see the “Ask Meta AI anything prompt” at the top of their search feeds, but it hasn’t shown up in any of mine yet. Meta upgrades typically roll out in this way, though; some people get them right away, while others have to wait a bit.  

Will it change your life in any way? Absolutely not. Do you care about it? Maybe. Let’s dive in. 

What does Meta AI do?

The most interesting thing I’ve seen it do so far is to generate realistic-looking animated characters and images that update while you’re still typing in the prompts. 

Just type what you want to see, and the image begins to generate as you type. Here’s an example: You want to see a curly-haired girl flying a dragonfly? Type “curly girl,” and it’s there. As you can see in the example above, the image continues to adapt to fit your narrative as you’re typing. The only limitation is your imagination. It’s like you can choose your own adventure but with no scary consequences. 

What’s really cool about real-time image generation is that it doesn’t wait for the entire prompt to be written. Instead, it starts to “see” each object as you write about it and adjusts the final image in real time. This requires powerful hardware and software, which is fascinating to watch in action.

What could possibly go wrong? 

It’s a great time waster and obviously a very powerful tool. We’ll have to see if Meta’s lewd content filters are up to snuff, however, as that’s a problem that plagued similar tools from Microsoft, Midjourney, and all the rest. 

Regarding guardrails, most high-profile AI image generators from Microsoft and others have blacklisted keywords that allow them to generate images of famous people like movie stars and high-profile politicians. The data sets these models use typically don’t include “normal people,” so typing your friend’s name into the AI isn’t going to produce anything that looks like them. 

There are always ways around these guardrails, though. Devoted users will likely figure out how to get certain celebrities to appear in images or even create NSFW (not safe for work) content using the system, which is something all the other AI image generators have been fighting against since day one. 

Meta AI for searching and winning arguments with friends

What about generating fake images that people think are real, like of politicians during the upcoming elections? I’m going to get back to that in a second, but first, here are a few other things the company says the new Meta AI can do: 

◾ Act as a personal assistant. “We believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free – and it’s available in more countries across our apps to help you plan dinner based on what’s in your fridge, study for your test, and so much more,” the company wrote in a statement. I see this as a way to win arguments with people on the apps and in real life. 

◾ Enable more powerful search. You can now use Meta AI “in feed, chats, search and more across our apps to get things done and access real-time information, without leaving the app you’re using,” the company says. 

◾ Create faster and more tailored images. "You can create album artwork for your band, decor inspiration for your apartment, animated custom GIFs, and more.”

During a video call demonstration earlier this week, a Facebook spokesperson said he expects people to use Meta AI “for fun and to be more social.”

To me, that means they’re trying to make Facebook more fun for more than just our parents and make Instagram more interesting so that young people don’t keep ditching it for TikTok. (Harsh, but kind of true, even though Facebook still has around three billion active users per month, which is about a third of the world’s population, according to digital marketing site Social Surge .)

Llama 3 will be available in 12 countries, including Canada, Australia, and South Africa, all of which are getting Meta’s AI for the first time. 

Is Meta AI safe? 

Llama 3 is the next generation of Meta’s open-source large language model. It’s similar to ChatGPT , which is about to unveil its upgraded model, GPT-5 . Models like these power AI-based apps such as chatbots, image generators, and virtual assistants. 

Upgrading from Llama 2 (launched in July 2023 ) to Llama 3 should mean more accurate responses, more human-like conversations, and a broader knowledge base for AI apps that use it. Meta wasn’t the first to debut an ultra-powerful artificial intelligence model – that honor, of course, went to OpenAI with ChatGPT – but it’s been working feverishly to catch up. Large language models like ChatGPT and Llama are incredibly versatile and can be used for many things. They are the brains behind AI chatbots, developer coding tools, automated writing assistants, and many other tools that are growing more ubiquitous by the day. 

Building a large language model ( LLM) of your own means being able to power the next generation of mega-powerful user-friendly apps, and that’s something that Meta is obviously interested in. It launched Llama 2 in July of last year and its successor is already here, which tells you everything you need to know about how many resources Meta is pouring into the project. 

Llama 3’s power comes from the AI’s even larger foundation of data, which Meta has plenty of. The company tells me that Llama 3 draws from the vast pools of information generated by people who use the company’s products. However, it promises that personal and private information isn’t fed to its language models. 

That’s a heartwarming promise, but can they ensure no sensitive information finds its way into one of these AI data sets? Not if history tells us anything, and that’s the cost of using social media. 

Can a chatbot using Llama 3 technology be used for nefarious purposes? Can it pretend to be you or someone you know? Could it effectively “deep fake” your online identity , allowing a scammer to tarnish your name or worse? 

Meta says that such a scenario isn’t possible thanks to various safeguards, but when we signed up for Facebook over a decade ago, we never could have guessed that one day, our content would feed AI. Wrestling with that reality might not sit well with many of Facebook’s longtime users. 

Specifically, Meta says they won’t let any “public figure” get used in the image or video generation. If you type in someone’s name, it might generate what a computer thinks a person with that name might look like, but that would not necessarily be accurate. 

It also has several NSFW safeguards built-in to protect against porn, racism, and other problems plaguing generative AI, but we have no idea how well those guardrails work. 

Why is Meta investing so much in AI?

Meta is doing this because having a large language model like Llama 3 means you can add new features to your apps, like adding AI to the search features on Facebook and Instagram. It adds a layer of smarts and can reduce friction between users and the apps they like.

By building its own high-powered AI, Meta can also sell licenses to companies that want to use it for their projects. ChatGPT runs on the same licensing business model, where access to AI is granted to companies and their users for a specific fee. Meta stands to make a lot of money with an LLM in various ways, including advertising (think auto-generated ads that appeal to you, specifically) and selling access to this AI. 

Facebook has one of the largest stockpiles of any company's data, thanks to more than a decade of user-generated content in the form of posts, comments, replies, and so on. This data trains Llama in how humans talk and makes connections between words and objects, places, and concepts. The smarter it gets, the more helpful it should be.

That’s the theory, but I’ve been covering tech long enough to be skeptical at best.

In a prologue included with the CD booklet, Swift describes the album as "a detailed rewinding / For the purpose of warning / For the sake of reminding."

Swift frames "Poets" as a debrief of an ill-fated love affair, "a mutual manic phase" in the wake of a breakup — torrid, brief, yet creatively fruitful. "A smirk creeps onto this poet's face," she writes. "Because it's the worst men that I write best."

"Poets" is the first set of all-new songs that Swift has released since her breakup with Joe Alwyn, whom she dated for about six years before their split made headlines last April . Shortly after, she was linked to The 1975 frontman Matty Healy .

The follow-up to Swift's record-breaking 2022 album "Midnights" echoes the commercially favored pop-forward sound of its predecessor, with much of the album produced by Swift's longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff . Aaron Dessner, who worked extensively with Swift on sister albums "Folklore" and "Evermore," produced the remaining chunk of songs.

Two hours after the album's release, Swift surprised fans with "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," which contains 15 additional songs . However, for the purposes of our review, the standard-edition tracklist will be treated as the primary, cohesive body of work.

Antonoff has caught a lot of flack from music critics and other skeptics for doubling down on his signature sound and failing to innovate, particularly when it comes to his creative partnership with Swift. It is objectively hilarious that Swift released "1989 (Taylor's Version)" in October with a direct request to stop speculating about her personal life , only to name her new album after a song that invites us to speculate about her personal life — specifically her (alleged) fling with Matty Healy last spring.

"You left your typewriter at my apartment / Straight from the tortured poets department," Swift sings in the song's opening line, perhaps confirming her album title was inspired by a caption from Healy's now-deleted Instagram, " Gay Poets Society ." (I can't think of anyone else in Swift's social circle who's gleefully pretentious enough to carry around a typewriter.) "You smoked, then ate seven bars of chocolate," she sings later, likely a nod to The 1975's breakout hit " Chocolate ."

Not only does "The Tortured Poets Department" invite speculation, but in the bridge, it even names names.

"You told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen," Swift sings. Note: Her friend Lucy Dacus (of boygenius fame) was filmed dancing with Healy at The Eras Tour . The second name almost certainly refers to Antonoff, who also coproduced The 1975's latest album, " Being Funny In a Foreign Language ."

"Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be," Swift adds in a teasing lilt. "'Cause we're crazy." No kidding!

This song is surely meant to be over-the-top corny and tongue-in-cheek amusing, and it succeeds on both counts. Even the title is an inside joke.

Unfortunately, lyrics like "We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist" and "I scratch your head, you fall asleep / Like a tattooed golden retriever" will haunt me until the day that I die. I can already see disparaging tweets about "Kidz Bop (Taylor's Version)" in my mind's eye. This is worse than the "sexy baby" fiasco .

Especially with its typical Antonoff production, this song sounds like an AI-created "Midnights" parody. Swift is right about one thing: This is definitely not the Chelsea Hotel.

"My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" would be right at home on "1989 (Taylor's Version)."

"My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" sounds exactly like the vault tracks from "1989 (Taylor's Version)" — which, you guessed it, were accused of sounding eerily similar to "Midnights" songs.

To be fair, I love all the "1989" vault tracks (especially " Is It Over Now? "), so this isn't necessarily a knock in my book. But it does mean that "My Boy" fails to stand out. It relies on a fast-dulling formula.

"Down Bad" is the "Slut!" sequel no one expected.

There were rumors The 1975 was meant to be featured on " Slut! " and Healy is even listed as a cowriter in some physical copies of "1989 (Taylor's Version)." (He met Swift a decade ago, around the time the album was originally written.)

Healy's contributions to the song were apparently erased after fans condemned their relationship last year . We assumed it would go down as a glitch in her legacy. But as always, Swift gets the last word .

Where Swift once sighed, "If they call me a slut, you know it might be worth it for once," now she fumes, "Fuck it, I was in love. So fuck you if I can't have us."

Both songs confront the disconnect between Swift's polished public image and her salacious desires, as well as the intersection of romance and delusion.

On "Down Bad," this album starts to pick up steam. Antonoff's sparkly synths and Swift's breezy vocals persist, but we're teased with a slice of her brain that's enthrallingly unhinged.

"So Long, London" illustrates the agony of a drawn-out goodbye.

In terms of sequencing, "Poets" is like the anti-"Midnights." Where the latter was front-loaded with album highlights, "Poets" kicked off by testing my loyalty. The first 16 minutes or so had me seriously concerned.

"So Long, London" marked a key turning point in my listening experience — a blessed wellspring of trust in Swift's vision.

Dessner's influence is immediately felt in the song's slow-burn pacing. As a production team, Swift and Dessner excel at creating tension and building toward catharsis. (Think "Exile," "Champagne Problems," " Would've, Could've, Should've ," etc.) "So Long, London" is another such success story.

Swift's lyrics mirror the production, mounting with urgency as the seconds tick away — as if her love is crumbling in real time.

"I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free," she sings, her voice heavy with grief. "You swore that you loved me, but where were the clues? / I died on the altar waiting for the proof."

"But Daddy I Love Him" is a scorched-earth song where Swift really comes alive.

Last year, I wrote an article encouraging Swift to criticize her own fans , particularly those with an intense fixation on her personal life. At the time, this felt like a pipe dream. Swift has long embraced a laissez-faire approach to fan behavior, even when it's been obviously invasive, homophobic , or even threatening .

Now, my request doesn't seem so far-fetched. "But Daddy I Love Him" is the closest Swift has ever gotten to scolding parasocial Swifties, many of whom were vocal about their distaste for Healy .

After cracking some jokes at their expense ("I'm having his baby / No I'm not! / But you should see your faces"), Swift goes absolutely scorched-earth in the bridge.

"God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what's best for me," she spits. "Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I'll never see / Thinking it can change the beat of my heart when he touches me."

The song plays like a grown-up, jaded version of "Love Story," where societal pressures and family feuds are no match for Swift's wildest whims. And she goes all-in: "But Daddy I Love Him" is the longest song on the album, stuffed with Shakespeare-level dramatics.

"Fresh Out the Slammer" is a fascinating tale of freedom and lust.

"Fresh Out the Slammer" kicks off with an Orville Peck-esque electric guitar, adopting a vintage Western-rock vibe. After flipping off her audience in the previous track, this feels like the ideal moment for Swift to assume the role of an outlaw.

The song title, a euphemism for getting out of jail, works in this context, with Swift using the phrase to evoke her newfound single status. She's recently left a relationship and she's eager to "run back home" to an old flame.

This is juicy on many levels when compared to the timeline of Swift's love life (at least, the timeline the public is privy to). But speaking broadly, this song is juicy no matter who it's about. Swift revels in her long-sought freedom, justifying her rebound with a loaded shrug: "I did my time."

I don't know the intimate details of Swift's love life, but I do know one thing. If you ever compare your relationship to jail time, my hope is that you'll run — as fast and as far away as possible.

"Florida!!!" includes a potent feature from Florence + the Machine.

"Florida!!!" is a fascinating outlier on this tracklist. The lyrics are rich yet cryptic, boasting clear traces of Florence Welch's creative touch.

Welch is a painfully underrated lyricist, so I'm thrilled she was given a proper feature on this album. (We all remember what happened with Lana Del Rey's wasted vocals on "Midnights.") I can only imagine that Swift heard recent Welch cuts like "King" and " Girls Against God " and thought to herself, "I wish I wrote that."

"Florida!!!" is ambiguous with its bottom line, but with a song that sounds this cool and spooky, it's hard to care if the story has a moral. Swift sings of a town that "reeks of driving myself crazy," while Welch fantasizes about getting drunk and drowning her exes in a swamp. "Is that a bad thing to say in a song?" they harmonize with a knowing smile, all but winking at the listener.

Welch infuses a jolt of mystic, curious energy into Swift's modern-pop diarism. Their duet is a fever dream, full of hedonistic pursuits and hallucinations. It's perfectly placed at the album's midway point, foreshadowing a descent into madness in its latter half. Both women succumb to Florida's charms like they're following a siren song — and they're beckoning us to follow.

"Guilty as Sin?" is somehow sad and horny at the same time.

For those who'll accuse this album of barely addressing Swift's longest public relationship, allow me to enter the first verse of this song into evidence: "My boredom's bone-deep / This cage was once just fine / Am I allowed to cry? / I dream of cracking locks / Throwing my life to the wolves, or the ocean rocks / Crashing into him tonight."

In just a few lines, Swift offers a more poignant portrayal of the " seven-year itch " than I have ever heard or read. In reality, falling out of love is a sluggish and bitter process.

Swift copes with this phenomenon by projecting her carnal cravings onto a clean, blank slate — a man who hasn't disappointed her yet.

"Someone told me, 'There's no such thing as bad thoughts, only your actions talk,'" she continues. "We've already done it in my head / If it's make-believe / Why does it feel like a vow / We'll both uphold somehow?"

To put it bluntly, these lyrics are bonkers. I cannot believe Swift committed these thoughts to paper, recorded them in a studio, submitted them to her label, and then released them into the world. She has been horny in her music before ("Dress," "Maroon") and she's been audacious in her music before (the entirety of "Speak Now"), but given her current level of fame, this is unprecedented.

To be clear, I mean that in a positive way. I'm eating this up. After all, Swift's been warning us for years that she's the maddest woman this town has ever seen . She had a marvelous time ruining everything, haven't you heard?

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is an obvious standout.

Swift loves a self-righteous battle cry ("I Did Something Bad," "The Man," "Vigilante Shit"), but this might be the first time she's gotten it exactly right. Backed by warlike drums, Swift lays siege to the celebrity machine.

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" contains some all-timers in Swift's storied catalog of one-liners: "You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me" is a personal favorite, but every lyric lands like a bomb or a punchline: "Put narcotics into all of my songs / And that's why you're still singing along."

This song is everything that "Reputation" wanted to be: darkly funny, sharply observed, vulnerable, sinister, and formidable at every turn.

"I was tame, I was gentle, 'til the circus life made me mean / Don't you worry folks, we took out all her teeth! / Who's afraid of little old me?" Swift wails in the chorus, before adding coyly: "Well, you should be."

Indeed, if that question is coming from Swift, the answer is me. I am terrified of this woman for making me feel so demented and powerful with a five-minute package of pop melodies.

"I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)" depicts Swift at a crossroads in her relationship.

As its title suggests, "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)" begins to reveal the cracks in Swift's feverish love story. "The smoke cloud billows out his mouth like a freight train through a small town," she sings to open the song. "The jokes that he told across the bar were revolting and far too loud."

Although she spends the rest of the song pledging to "fix him," balking at any suggestion that she might be out of her depth, Swift's doubts taint the whole affair.

In a stroke of surreal brilliance, Swift paints her unlikable lover as an old-school cowboy — cruising down a Texas highway, hands calloused from his trusty pistol — calling back to her lawless behavior in "Fresh Out the Slammer."

"Loml" is the most heart-wrenching song on the tracklist.

"Loml" sees Swift reflecting on a doomed relationship, retracing her steps, watching helplessly as the "love of my life" becomes the "loss of my life."

"You shit-talked me under the table / Talking rings and talking cradles / I wish I could unrecall / How we almost had it all," Swift sings in the show-stopping bridge. "Dancing phantoms on the terrace / Are they secondhand embarrassed / That I can't get out of bed? Because something counterfeit's dead."

These questions recall " The 1 ," the opening track on "Folklore," which Swift began to perform on The Eras Tour after her breakup with Alwyn was made public.

"The 1" is all about existential probes and what-if doom spirals, all about "digging up the grave another time." In "Loml," Swift falls back into her old patterns: "Still alive, killing time at the cemetery / Never quite buried."

"Loml" is the only song on "Poets" that made me cry on the first play.

I'll admit I'm surprised there aren't more songs like this on this tracklist. But a love that burns, crackles, and explodes is much easier to obsess over (and write pop songs about) than a love that decays, resurrects, and dies again. That's what makes the painful precision of "Loml" even more impressive. Swift's grave-plotting memory is her greatest asset as a lyricist.

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" is extravagant, self-referential, and exhilarating.

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" might be the most pop-forward fit of maximalism on this entire tracklist. Against all odds, it's an album highlight.

This is a masterful exposé of a carefully constructed spectacle. Swift depicts her onstage performance as a kind of perverse wish fulfillment: "All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting, 'MORE!'" (Fans will recognize this imagery from the "Folklore" standout "Mirrorball," which Swift performed acoustically on the opening night of The Eras Tour.)

We don't have time to unpack all the revelations in this song, but suffice it to say that "Broken Heart" succeeds as a satire, a confession, and an indictment of sexist double standards ("Lights, camera, bitch, smile!"), all at the same time.

Women in pop music are expected to refract sequin stars, hit their marks, fake it 'til they make it — even when they wanna die — while men are permitted to show up in T-shirts, stand still, and lip-sync . If this song makes you uncomfortable, it's probably meant to.

In the outro, Swift leaves little room for ambiguity, exclaiming deliriously: "I'm miserable! And no one even knows!" It's campy and it's vicious. She lands the punchline, but it feels more like she's twisting the knife.

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" is a classic Swiftian takedown.

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" is alive with malice, full of deliciously specific anecdotes: "You tried to buy some pills / From a friend of friends of mine / They just ghosted you / Now you know what it feels like." If someone had written that lyric about me, I'd be forced to fake my own death and start fresh with a new identity. And that's just the first verse. The bridge is positively lethal.

If you're surprised by the proficiency of this takedown — all for a man who was "gone by the morning" — may I remind you of Swift's magnum opus, " All Too Well ," which she reportedly wrote about a three-month relationship that blew up in her face.

This is where Swift thrives as a songwriter: the interpretive limbo between possibility and security; the yearning for what could've been; the aftermath of short-lived bliss, when all that's left is the future you once imagined.

"The Alchemy" is open to interpretation.

Much like "Mastermind," the closing track on "Midnights," "The Alchemy" could be interpreted as a love song or a metaphor for Swift's career .

"What if I told you I'm back? / The hospital was a drag / Worst sleep that I ever had," she sings in the first verse, poking fun at her own propensity to spin painful experiences into albums.

Indeed, the chorus plays like a tongue-in-cheek nod to Swift's dominance in the industry: "Ditch the clowns, get the crown / Baby, I'm the one to be," she winks. "Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?" She manages to toe the line between cheeky and sincere, tipping her hat to the fans who transformed her life and put her on the throne.

"Clara Bow" draws a parallel between Swift and the first "It Girl."

"Clara Bow" joins Swift's collection of songs about the peculiar experience of fame. (Think: "The Lucky One," "The Last Great American Dynasty," "You're On Your Own, Kid," etc.) To hear her tell it, Swift felt stardom beckon from a very young age, almost like an invisible string was tying her to the stage.

In the song, Swift dreams of glory and promises to be "dazzling." She even name-drops Stevie Nicks and her mysterious moonlit magic . But she also allows for a sliver of regret in retrospect: "Only when your girlish glow flickers just so / Do they let you know / It's hell on earth to be heavenly."

As the song winds down, Swift adds her own name to the succession of Bow and Nicks, doubling as the observed and her own observer. It's a fitting end to an album full of pomp and performance.

Here's the thing: Swift knows that people will pore over the details of this album to dissect her romantic travails. I'm as guilty as anyone else, and I know it's not a noble practice. It's an obsessive storm Swift is willing to weather to do what she loves for a living.

But Swift did not become as big and beloved as she is because of that storm. In fact, I would argue she's successful in spite of it. 

Most people are not chronically online Easter egg hunters. Most people do not play Swift's music in the car, in the shower, or in a dark room after a bad day, over and over for years, because they crave the details of her latest breakup.

We don't listen to Swift's music because it necessarily is true. We listen because it feels true. She writes about characters we recognize and experiences we've lived, blowing everything out of proportion in the way we wish we could. The size of Swift's platform is directly proportional to the bigness of her feelings, whatever or whoever may have provoked them.

That said, don't let the "tattooed golden retriever" (the man or the lyric) distract you from the truth. Corny as some moments may be, this is a marvelously deranged pop album.

Despite the rough start, Swift builds incredible momentum from track four onwards, tossing out confessions and confronting hecklers with a tearaway, absurd kind of zeal.

Of course, there are still mid-tempo synths and simple earworms by the fistful. This is hardly new sonic territory — nor would I praise the album as an artistic risk — but "The Tortured Poets Department" is bolder and more berserk than Swift's previous pop achievements. "1989" was a tricky pivot at the time, but Swift still made sure to play by the radio's rules, sticking to traditional song structures and repetitive hooks. More recently, "Midnights" gestured toward interesting themes but ultimately felt thin.

On "Poets," Swift doesn't exactly break with her well-established, commercial-friendly conventions — but she does toy with her audience in interesting ways.

There's depth and texture in these songs, even shades of the guitar-forward rock sound that many fans crave. It's a pop album without an obvious radio hit. Swift's lyrics are surprisingly meta, packed with fourth-wall breaks and self-aware pouts. Her vocal delivery is varied, passionate, often performative. She shrieks and snarls and deploys a whisper that's dripping with lust, such that we've rarely heard. For a pop star with Swift's relish for mass appeal, this album almost sounds bloodthirsty by comparison.

"The Tortured Poets Department" won't be everyone's cup of tea. It's chaotic, verbose, and full of words that scream "I own a thesaurus."

It still works, because Swift is in on the joke.

At the end of the day, I'd rather have a sensitive and self-indulgent album than one that's trying too hard to be pretty and perfect. I can't relate to the woman looking statuesque onstage, with her polite grin and sequined silhouette. But I can relate to the woman who bares her teeth when the crowd demands, "MORE!"

As temperatures rise, panel efficiency and production begin to drop. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat will affect your solar panel output and longevity. 

The most popular types of solar panels are crystalline. These panels offer the highest efficiency and energy production . The two types of crystalline panels are monocrystalline and polycrystalline . 

Monocrystalline (mono) solar panels have higher efficiency and energy output . Efficiency indicates the amount of sunlight your panels can absorb and convert to solar energy . The higher a panel’s efficiency rating , the better its power production . Monocrystalline panels have high efficiency ratings of 15% to 21%.

Solar panels are rated by the amount of power they can produce in ideal conditions , typically around 1,000 watts per square meter. However, in real-world conditions, they usually only produce 200 to 300 watts per square meter. Most residential solar panels produce between 1 and 3 kilowatts (kW) of power. That might not sound like much, but it’s enough to power a small home or business. 

Panel size and the cells’ efficiency determine the power ratings . For example, a standard solar panel may be rated at 200 watts, while a more efficient panel may be rated at 400 watts.

An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th ( now streaming on Max ) finds director Marc Levin and longtime producing partner Daphne Pinkerson returning to a story they visited in 1996, for NBC documentary Oklahoma City: One Year Later . The new doc is a deeper retrospective that pieces together the narrative of Timothy McVeigh’s bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building in 1995, killing 168 people. Levin also broadens the perspective, looking into the origins of the type of modern right-wing extremism that birthed McVeigh – and asserts, quite compellingly, that the nastiest domestic terrorist on record wasn’t a “lone wolf,” but rather a piece of a larger cabal. 

AN AMERICAN BOMBING: THE ROAD TO APRIL 19TH : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Kathy Sanders remembers the morning of April 19, 1995 in great detail. She sang her grandsons awake, fed them breakfast and drove them to the daycare center in the Oklahoma City federal building. Not long thereafter, her son, at the time off duty from his job as a police officer, spotted his nephew among a line of dead children. He wanted to hug the boy and say goodbye but was stopped. This was a crime scene, he was told. The body was evidence. We see disturbing archival footage of people staggering, bleeding, away from the decimated building; officials cradle injured children, taking them to get medical assistance. The media jumped to a big, dumb conclusion that this horror was the result of Islamic terrorism. We see President Bill Clinton ask the American people to let the investigation play out before pointing fingers. Then we see Clinton, today, saying he thought from the beginning that the attack had a lot of the hallmarks of domestic terrorism, the likes of which he saw brewing among militias while he was governor of Arkansas.

We likely already know the bare bones of the rest of the story: McVeigh, oddly, was already in custody for driving without a license plate and carrying an unlicensed gun. He was tried, convicted and, in 2001, executed by lethal injection, showing no remorse. His motive was to start an American revolution – among his final words, he called himself the winner of this conflict, because the tally was McVeigh 168, the U.S. government 1. From here, Levin interviews journalists, family members of victims, lawyers involved in McVeigh’s case, numerous government officials and even a former right-wing extremist, assembling a much bigger picture to contextualize the bombing.

Levin jumps back to 1983, labeled on screen as the “first wave.” In the wake of President Carter’s ban on exporting crops to Russia, farmers took a significant financial hit; President Reagan subsequently vetoed a bailout package, essentially leaving them to suffer. The seeds of anti-government discord were planted, and militias began to form, rallying around white supremacist and Christian fundamentalist ideologies. By the ’90s, the militia movement coalesced in tragic events in Ruby Ridge, Idaho and Waco, Texas, both notable for the U.S. government’s bungled attempts to end stalemate sieges with heavily armed extremists; the former resulted in high-profile conspiracy charges that the defendants successfully fended off, and the latter found McVeigh in attendance as 80 people in the Waco compound died as it burned. McVeigh was galvanized, but so were many others. By the time Levin gets to the “third wave,” we see images from the Jan. 6 resurrection. It’s all part of the same mosaic of modern American history.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: It’s surely not a stretch to say An American Bombing is a spiritual predecessor to HBO’s Jan. 6 doc Four Hours at the Capitol .

Performance Worth Watching: Sanders has been steadfast in her insistence that McVeigh did not act alone, that the government wasn’t diligent in trying only McVeigh and one accomplice, Terry Nichols. She even went so far as to correspond with Nichols while he was in prison, as she found comfort in forgiveness.

Memorable Dialogue: Bud Welch, who lost his daughter in the bombing, famously fought against giving McVeigh the death penalty, and even reached out to McVeigh’s father to offer comfort. Why? “The day that our parents die, we go to the hilltop and we bury them,” he said. “The day our children die, we buy them in our hearts. And that never goes away.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: There’s a clearer, sharper argument to be made than what Levin posits in An American Bombing . The film covers a lot of ground – the origins of the modern white supremacist movement, the emotional fallout from the bombing, the U.S. government’s inability to land a solid blow against domestic extremism – but sometimes feels like its handful of narrative threads are shuffled together, and could be edited down to finer points that make stronger statements. 

But the film is nevertheless informative and eye-opening in its retrospective scrutiny of a true American tragedy. Levin reveals a strong sense of disillusionment among military veterans who return from war – in McVeigh’s case, the Gulf War – with no job or sense of purpose, and a likely case of PTSD. Most interesting are the interviews with Kerry Noble, the former extremist who provides insight that confirms and expounds upon many of our assumptions about Christian right-wing militias (he shares an anecdote about how his particular group of wackos wanted to target a church that functioned as a safe space for gay people, but he changed his tune when he ended up seeing them as fellow Christians); Noble could be the focus of a separate documentary. 

Levin tick-tocks through McVeigh’s life and misdeeds, shows us how the right-wing media trendsetters had been grousing about Democrats taking their guns for decades before the slew of mass shootings in recent years, and frequently returns to Sanders and Welch so the film balances emotional and intellectual approaches. The overall story touches on racism, religion, capital punishment, cults and the proliferation of weapons in America – too much to cover in 106 minutes. But the film eventually lands on two assertions: Journalist Mike Boettcher puts it bluntly when he says the bombing was a sign for America to “wake up.” And Clinton says McVeigh’s statements and reasoning “literally sound like the mainstream today.” 

Our Call: STREAM IT. Cluttered as An American Bombing can occasionally be, it’s nevertheless convincing in its intent.
