Essay on Teachers Day

Teachers’ Day in the United States is not just a day; it is a celebration of the heart, soul, and essence of education. It is a day dedicated to acknowledging the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the futures of their students and, by extension, the future of the nation. Celebrated on the first Tuesday of the first full week of May, National Teacher Appreciation Day, as part of Teacher Appreciation Week, offers a moment for students, parents, and the community to express gratitude and recognize the dedication, hard work, and impact of teachers.

Historical Context and Significance

The origin of Teachers’ Day in the United States dates back to 1953 when Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. This advocacy underscored the importance of recognizing the valuable contributions teachers make to society. Over the years, the celebration has evolved, and today, it is observed for an entire week, known as Teacher Appreciation Week. This expansion signifies a growing acknowledgment of the extensive contributions teachers make beyond the classroom.

The Role of Teachers in Education

The teaching-learning tradition has long held a centre stage in India’s lineage of developing knowledge systems. This system was conducive to the holistic personality growth of the student and ensured knowledge became a lived experience for him rather than remaining merely theoretical. The teacher was a worshipped figure then and continues to be a respected figure in today’s times as well.

Since time immemorial India has produced a number of gems who have strengthened India’s place in history and earned the awe of the people from across the globe. In his words , “Teachers should be the best minds in the country”. His birthday is celebrated as the Teachers’ Day every year in India to mark his wisdom, knowledge and contribution in the development of the country and its students, the future citizens.

History of Teachers’ Day

In 1962, the students and friends of Dr Radhakrishnan came together and requested to celebrate his birthday. Glad though he was, the great teacher and philosopher wanted this day to be held in greater importance than his birthday only. So he asked the enthusiastic people to celebrate the day as nationwide Teachers’ Day as teachers are, after all, one of the pillars of the society. Everyone agreed upon this proposal and since then, this day is observed as the Teachers’ Day in India.

He believed that the right kind of education as delivered by a teacher can help in eradicating numerous societal problems and superstitious culture that prevails among a significant number of people to date. He wanted a thorough change in the education system as existing in the country by opting for a deeper connection between the teacher and student and changing the way of teaching too. He emphasized on the fact that a teacher and a student must have a good understanding and relationship that should help in imparting and gaining knowledge.

It was his belief that teachers lay the foundation for the future and hold utter responsibility for how good a citizen a student turns out to be. Teachers’ Day is not only a showcase for the acknowledgement towards teachers, but it also implies the recognition of the hard work the teachers put in for the holistic development of the students.

Teacher’s Day Celebration in India

This day is celebrated with utter respect and excitement by the students of all ages. Students look forward to this day with a lot of anticipation. Students showcase their performances and teachers get delighted by them. Often, the students bring gifts to their favourite teachers as a token of appreciation and respect. The day does not only hold importance for students but the teachers also. They are once again reminded of how appreciated they are by the students. No official classes are held on this day in schools, colleges or universities.

Dr. Sarvapali Radhakrishnan was an exceptionally great teacher and philosopher. We must carry forward his torch and fulfil our responsibilities towards our teachers with utter respect and humbleness. Dr. Radhakrishnan breathed his last on 17 th April 1975. But his legend is still alive and every year through the celebration of Teachers’ Day in India, he and his philosophies are remembered time and again.

Long Essay on Teachers Day 8 (1300 Words)

Teacher’s Day in India is a very important annual event to applaud and recognize our teachers for their exceptional and extraordinary work. The Teacher’s Day is also a good medium for students to express their love and respect for their teachers. It is celebrated on 5 th September every year with great enthusiasm by the students across the whole nation. Teacher’s Day falling on 5 th September of every year is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the first vice-President and second President of India and also was a distinguished scholar and excellent teacher. We celebrate this day just to remember him and pay him tribute for his great acts and achievements.

Teachers Day is not about only those teachers who have taught us in Schools, Colleges or any other Institution but it is also about all those people who have ever taught us something valuable.

Why do We Celebrate Teacher’s Day?

As it is clear from its name, Teacher’s Day is a day of Teachers. According to Hindu Scripts, ‘Brahma’ is the creator of the Universe. In the same way, a teacher is the creator of the future of the Nation. A teacher is a person who never leaves teaching and keeps educating the youngsters throughout his/her life. S/He performs his/her duty with full honesty and dedication just to make his/her pupils successful and the success of his/her pupils is the actual success of the teacher.

For a good teacher, teaching is not just a profession, a service or a job but s/he regards education as a pillar of the Nation. We can never get over their beneficences so we celebrate the Teacher’s Day just to pay them respect and make them understand how valuable they are for us.

Origin of Teacher’s Day

Teacher’s Day which is celebrated across the country to mark the contribution of the Teachers and tribute to them is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 th September 1888. He was an Indian Philosopher and Statesman who also served as India’s 1 st Vice-President and 2 nd President. He was honoured with several awards including Bharat Ratna in 1954, Knighthood in 1931, and Order of Merit in 1963.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had also served as a teacher and professor during his early career. He was loved and highly respected by his pupils. He was elected the 2nd President of India on 14 th May 1962. While serving as the President in 1962, some of his friends and Students requested him to celebrate his Birthday every year as “Radhakrishnan Day”, as they wanted to pay him tribute every year for his service and achievements. Dr. Radhakrishnan denied celebrating 5 th September as his birthday, instead he requested them to celebrate 5 th September as Teacher’s Day saying “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day”.

Since then the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan is being celebrated as the Teacher’s Day. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan wanted the students of India to understand the importance of their Teachers and always pay them respect that is why his birthday is celebrated as the Teacher’s Day every year.

Teacher’s Day Celebration

On 5 th September, Teacher’s Day is celebrated all across the Nation with great enthusiasm and respect for the teaching community. The most of the excitement can be seen among the students of pre college schools. They eagerly wait for the day to celebrate and tribute their teachers.

Various kinds of social and cultural events and especially acts based on teachers are organised in Schools and Colleges on this day. The preparation starts few days before the Teachers Day. The students prepare speeches and poems dedicated to their teachers and perform them on the stage. They also prepare some beautiful gifts, greeting cards and flowers for their teachers.

Also many quizzes, essay competitions and other such events are organised by authorities. The celebration usually starts with cutting of cake by the teachers. It is not necessarily done in every institution but most of the institutions, Schools and Collages do so. Students also bring presents for their favourite teachers. Teachers accept the gift and respect of their students and fill them with their love and blessings. Students also decorate their School and Classroom beautifully to surprise their Teachers. The excitement for teacher’s day and the love and respect for their teachers can clearly be seen in the eyes of every student.

Importance of Teacher’s Day

Importance of Teacher’s Day in our life depends completely upon the importance of Teachers in our life.

If you are a student then you know very well what a teacher is. A teacher teaches us, guides us, amends our mistakes, scolds us when necessary and also punishes us too, but deep in our heart we all know that he is trying to make us civilized and successful by policing and improving our positive sides. To pay them high respect and follow their every direction should be our utmost aim at this age forgetting all other things. Celebrate the Teacher’s Day to pay respect to your teachers.

If you are a successful person, either employed or a businessman, then undoubtedly you understand very well the importance of a teacher and his contribution in your successful life. All that you have achieved till date and also what you will achieve in future is just because of the knowledge given to you by your teachers. The Teacher’s Day is very important for you and it brings you the chance to thank your teacher and show your love to them.

Relation between an Ideal Teacher and Student

The bonding between a teacher and his pupils is a very important and sacred part of Indian Culture. Our history is the proof of it. A student is like a bud of flower which has not bloomed yet and the Teacher is the gardener. S/He nourishes it, cares for it, and helps it in growing and smelling the entire Garden.

A good teacher is always dedicated towards developing his/her students. S/He works on making him/her able to fight and survive in the fast moving world. It does not matter if s/he lives in a hut or a small room but s/he becomes much happier to see the success of his/her students.

A student must understand the purpose of teacher and s/he can pay him/her teachers respect only by applying their teachings in life and making them feel proud. Instead of being rich and successful being a good citizen and responsible person obliges the teachers most.

A good bond between a teacher and a student has always led to success and fame. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was the political Guru of Mahatma Gandhi who asked Gandhi ji to return from South Africa and serve his Nation. It was Chanakya who guided Chandragupta Maurya to fight against Nanda Dynasty with the help of which Chandragupta Maurya established Maurya Dynasty.

Thus a good relation between a teacher and his student always has the power to change the history of the world.

So we have come to know that the Teacher’s Day is a very important day in the life of every person because every individual of the nation whether, young or old, has been a student some day. We must celebrate this day with zeal and respect to express our gratitude towards our teachers. It is not necessary to give them heavy and costly gifts but just a sense of utmost respect is enough to make them happy. A student and teacher’s relation is the most important thing in our nation that needs to be maintained for a long time to make the nation leader of the world.

Photo Essay: Portlanders Young and Old Celebrate Earth Day With Making Earth Cool

Under the pomp and ceremony of a costume parade on a beautiful spring day lay a deep reservoir of disquiet for what the future might hold..

essay teachers day celebration

On Saturday, a parade of Portlanders marched from Sunnyside Environmental School through quiet inner Eastside residential blocks, celebrating Earth Day with the pageantry of handmade costumes and musical accompaniment from Portland’s own Unpresidented Brass Band.

Led by a decommissioned fire engine, the procession of approximately 200 people—most dressed as animals and plants—drew neighbors and diners out to watch the passing spectacle.

The event was organized by climate crisis-focused art collective Making Earth Cool , Portland Youth Climate Strike, Sunnyside Environmental School, and Extinction Rebellion PDX (a local chapter of the global nonviolent civil disobedience movement), among others.

At the parade Angela McIlvain, Mel Shea, and Nora Colie—wearing their respective ensembles as a globe with sunglasses "Earthy," a yellow flower "Dandy," and a pink wildflower "Clover"—emphasized the importance of this event being a multigenerational gathering and celebration. Under the pomp and ceremony of families in costumes and the communal celebration of Earth on a beautiful spring day, lies a deep reservoir of disquiet for what the future might hold.

“The youth are going to experience a lot more climate change than we have,” Shea told the  Mercury . “There is an anxiousness to it, and we hope to help people not feel alone.”

A History of Moscow in 13 Dishes

Jun 06 2018.

War, hunger, and some of the world’s great doomed social experiments all changed the way that Moscow eats.

Moscow, the European metropolis on Asia’s western flank, has always been a canvas for competing cultures. Its cuisine is no different. The ancient baselines of winter grains, root vegetables, and cabbage acquired scaffolding from both directions: eastern horsemen brought meat on sticks, western craftsmen brought pastries, and courtly French chefs came and drowned it all in cream.

History has a place on the plate here, as well: war, hunger, and some of the world’s great doomed social experiments from Serfdom to Communism to Bandit Capitalism all changed the way that Moscow eats. So in the spirit of all of those grand failures, we—a Russian chef and an American writer—will attempt here to reduce the towering history of this unknowable city to 13 dishes, with some Imperial past but a special emphasis on the more recent decades of culinary paroxysms as Moscow emerged from its Soviet slumber.

Olivier Salad

To visualize the long marriage between French and Russian cuisines, picture Peter the Great, on a diplomatic sojourn to Paris in 1717, a “ stranger to etiquette ”, meeting the 7-year-old boy-king Louis XV and lifting him in the air out of sheer elán. These things were simply not done, and yet, there they were. Peter’s joyful (and often envious) fascination with all things French took hold, among other places, in the kitchen. He brought French chefs back to his palaces, and then the lesser nobility followed suit, and when the first restaurants emerged in Moscow, they also spoke French. The Hermitage Restaurant, which was open from 1864 until history intervened in 1917, had a Francophone Belgian named Lucien Olivier as a chef, and he made a salad that was a perfectly unrestrained combination of French flavors and Russian ingredients: grouse! Veal tongue! Proto-mayonnaise! The ingredients now tend toward the pedestrian—boiled beef, dill pickles, various vegetables all bound with mayonnaise—and it has become a staple of Russian cuisine, especially on New Year’s. And yes, if you’ve ever seen the lonely Ensalada Rusa wilting behind the sneezeguard of a Spanish tapas bar, that is supposed to be a successor to the Olivier. But in Moscow, you should eat Matryoshka ’s version, which is not the original recipe but has some of that imperial richness: crayfish, quail, sturgeon caviar, and remoulade, all under a translucent aspic skirt, for 990₽ ($16).

There’s a type of expression around bottling things—bottled lightning, summer in a jar, etc.—that feels very apt here. What exactly is bottled with vareniye (jam)? A lot more than just fruit. These jams, which tend to be thinner than western varieties—with whole berries or fruit chunks in syrup—are bottled with a lot of Russian identity. There’s the Russian love of countryside. Deep dacha culture of summer cottages and personal orchards. Traditional naturopathy (raspberry vareniye taken with tea will fight fever). And above all, friendship is bottled here— vareniye made from the overabundance of fruit at one’s dacha is the most typical Russian gift, real sharing from real nature, even in the often-cynical heart of Europe’s largest megacity. Visitors who are short on lifelong friendships in Moscow can pick some up fine vareniye at any Lavka Lavka shop (we recommend the delicate young pine cone jam) or, curiously enough, at many Armenian stores.

Borodinsky Bread

essay teachers day celebration

The clinical-sounding title of Lev Auerman’s 1935 classic Tekhnologiya Khlebopecheniya ( Bread Baking Technology) doesn’t promise scintillation. But Auerman’s recipe for rye bread changed Russian bread forever. An older legend had it that the bread was baked dark for mourning by a woman widowed in the battle of Borodino in 1812, but the real birth of the bread came from Auerman’s recipes. A modification on sweet, malted Baltic breads, Auerman’s Borodinsky bread was 100% rye and used caraway or anise. The recipe has evolved a bit—today it is 80% rye and 20% wheat high extraction flour and leans more on coriander than caraway. But its flavor profile (sweet, chewy) as well as its characteristic L7 mold —a deep brick of bread—has made it easily identifiable as the traditional, ubiquitous, every-occasion bread of Moscow. You can buy it everywhere, but the Azbuka Vkusa high-end markets have a reliably good sliced version.

Buckwheat Grechka

Look closely at those Russians who have followed their money to live in London, or are vacationing in Cyprus or Antalya. See the slight melancholy that not even cappuccinos or sunshine can erase. It’s not because Russians are gloomy by nature; it’s probably because there is no real grechka outside of Russia and Ukraine, and that is devastating. Buckwheat grain and groats— grechka (or grecha in Saint Petersburg)—are deep in the culture. It’s a wartime memory: May 9 Victory Day celebrations feature military kitchens serving buckwheat like they did at the front. It’s a little slice of Russian history that lies somewhere between oatmeal and couscous. In Moscow, eat it at Dr. Zhivago with milk (180₽/US$2.90) or mushrooms (590₽/US$9.50), and rejoice.

Mimoza Salad

essay teachers day celebration

This fantastically expressive egg-and-canned-fish salad is a testament to Soviet ingenuity—it’s the ultimate puzzle to make a drastically limited food chain sparkle—and the universal human thrill of layering foods. The geological creation starts with a base layer of fish, then layers of grated cooked potato, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, grated carrots, sweet onion, diced egg whites and then capped with a brilliant yellow crumble of boiled egg yolk. It sits there on the plate, dazzling like the flowering mimosa tree it is named after. The taste? Well, it’s comfort food. Pick some up to go at any Karavaev Brothers location —the excellent deli chain sells it for 650₽ (US$10.40) a kilo.

It seems odd, almost impossible, to imagine a time in Russia before shashlik. It’s meat on a stick, something that all humans should have had on the menu since at least the time of Prometheus. But shashlik as we know it know—cubes of marinated meat cooked with vegetables over a mangal grill—didn’t really take off in Russia until the early 1900s. And due to a lack of suitable meat in much of the Soviet era (there were no meat cattle herds, only dairy), we’re starting the clock on shashlik in the late Soviet period. Despite its relatively recent (re)appearance, it is now the ubiquitous grill phenomenon of Russia, a welcome ritual of summer.

Much of Russian cuisine has borrowed heavily from Central Asia and further east over the millennia ( pelmeni anyone?), but plov is a striking example of an entire eastern dish making its way directly into Russian households. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and upheaval in many Central Asian Soviet Republics, mass economic migration to Moscow took off in the late 80s and early 90s. Central Asians today are the lifeblood of the Moscow labor force (part of up to 10-12 million Central Asian migrants living in Russia), and plov—rice steamed in stock with meat and vegetables—has jumped from the migrant communities to the homes of Muscovites everywhere. It has developed an unfortunate reputation for being a food that even finicky kids will eat, so there is a lot of harried domestic plov being made. But you can get a fully expressed Uzbek version at Danilovsky Market, online at plov.com , or at Food City—the surf-and-turf Tsukiji of Moscow.

The Big Mac

essay teachers day celebration

So many of the difficulties in American-Russian relations come down to one foundational attitude problem: The Americans (that’s half of this writing duo) were incredibly, distressingly smug through the entire fall of the Soviet Union. We mistook Soviet failure for an American victory, and that made all the difference. What does that have to do with a Big Mac? Well, when Russia’s first McDonald’s opened on Pushkinskaya in 1990 and 5000 people turned out to wait in line for the first taste of America, we back home in the states mistook it for culinary and commercial superiority. But there was something more complicated happening: Russians had been denied Western goods for so long and with such force that any outside identity was much-needed oxygen. And the long-term victory, as McDonald’s has continued to thrive in post-Soviet Russia, really belongs to the local franchise, which used higher-quality ingredients than in the U.S. and created a chain that was successful not because of its American identity but because of its Russian modifications. We wouldn’t recommend eating at any McDonald’s, especially not when there is Teremok for your fast-food needs, but having a soda in the original location is one way to sit and ponder the sin of hubris. And to use the free toilet and Wi-Fi.

The crown jewel of Levantine meat preparations, perhaps the single greatest street meat in the world: Shawarma. It first came to Moscow with a shawarma joint across from the Passazh mall, opened in the early 90s by Syrian cooks who dazzled masses with their sizzling, spinning, spiced meat emporium. Lines that stretched into the hundreds of people weren’t uncommon in those heady early days. And even though the original spot closed many years ago, Moscow shawarma only grew from there, mutating into the beast it is today, where you’re likely to find chicken, cabbage, mayo and a thin tomato sauce all combining to make the Levant a distant memory.

Fish Tartare aka Sashimi

One result of the aforementioned American smugness is that the West seemed surprised at how rapidly 1990s Russia assimilated some of the most hardcore capitalist traits, including but not limited to conspicuous consumerism. Moscow’s new elite was very, very good at that. What could be more conspicuous that recreating a restrained, exclusive seafood cuisine from Japan in the chaotic, landlocked megacity of Moscow? The very improbability of high-end sushi and sashimi in Moscow fueled much of its allure, and even though the trends have moved on from sushi, you can still tell the emotional attachment that the oligarch class has to those formative wastes of money. Sumosan restaurant started in Moscow back in 1997 and has since expanded to Monte Carlo and Londongrad , where they serve a dish that they call Fish Tartare, among others, in their restaurants and through their private jet catering service.

Blue Cheese roll

If the early elite sushi restaurants in Moscow were the frivolous edge of a food phenomenon, then Yakitoriya , a chain which started in the late 1990s, democratized it with affordable sushi rolls geared to local tastes. The Blue Cheese Roll, available now on their menu, seems like the apex (or nadir) of the Russianized roll: salmon, smoked eel, cucumber, cream cheese, Blue Cheese sauce. It might not be Jiro’s dream, but a true Russian middle class, one that can work honestly, earn meaningful salaries, and have a freaky sushi roll at the end of the week just like the rest of us—that’s something worthing dreaming for. Blue Cheese Roll, Yakitoriya, 417₽ (US$6.70)

If you’re American, have you ever wondered why tacos took over middle America but sopes remain virtually unknown? It’s curious how a country can assimilate some foods from their neighbors and but remain blissfully ignorant of others. That may explain what took place two years ago in Moscow, when the city seemingly discovered, as if for the first time, the bagged awesomeness that is khinkali , a soup dumpling from Russia’s southern neighbor Georgia. It became very trendy very quickly, and khinkali joints sprouted across Moscow like griby after a rain. But it wasn’t just that dish: what they were serving was a bit of the imagined southern, sybaritic lifestyle of the Caucasus, as promised in restaurant names like Est’ Khinkali Pit Vino ( Eat Khinkali Drink Wine ). Your best bets are at the stately Sakhli , around 100₽ (US$1.60) per soft, fulsome dumpling, or the more modernized Kafe Khinkalnaya on Neglinnaya Street , 100₽ (US$0.80) a dumpling.

We have named burrata—yes, that Italian alchemy of cheese and cream—the Perfect Dish of Moscow 2018, if only because it is the Dish of the Moment, ready to be enjoyed at the height of its faddishness now, and equally ready to be replaced when the city decides to move on. An Octopus Took My Camera, and the Images Changed the Way I See the World

A colorful illustrated collage of animals, sea creatures and a person, intertwined.

By Craig Foster

Mr. Foster’s film, “My Octopus Teacher,” won the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2021. He wrote from Simon’s Town, South Africa.

I was gifted with a new way of seeing the day I got mugged underwater. I had been filming creatures living in the Great African Sea Forest off the coast of South Africa about a year ago when my camera was grabbed straight out of my hands by a young octopus thief. Wrapping her arms around her bounty, she zoomed backward across the ocean floor.

This was not the first time I’d found myself at the mercy of an eight-armed robber. A couple of years earlier, another curious octopus stole the wedding ring off my wife’s finger, never to be recovered. Octopuses love novel shiny things. Peering into their dens, I’ve found earrings, bracelets, spark plugs, sunglasses and a toy car with a revolving cylinder that the octopus spun round and round with its suckers.

As I wondered how to get my camera back without alarming my young friend, something surprising happened. She turned the camera around and began to film my diving partner and me.

The intriguing images she captured — videos of her own arms draped over the camera lens with our bodies in the background — had a profound effect on me. After many years filming octopuses and hundreds of other animals that call the Sea Forest home, for the first time I was seeing the world — and myself — from her perspective.

We must have looked strange to her in our masks and with our underwater flashlights. But in that moment I remembered that despite all our technology, we are not so different from our animal kin. Every breath of air, every drop of water, every bite of food comes from the living planet we share.

Monday is Earth Day, and I am tempted to ask myself how humanity can save our wild planet and undo the devastation we have unleashed upon the natural world. Where I live, in the Cape of Good Hope, I am privileged to be surrounded by nature, but we are grappling with pollution and dwindling numbers of shellfish, fish, raptors and insect species. Worldwide, we are at a tipping point with an estimated 69 percent decline in wildlife populations.

When I consider the vast network of living creatures on earth, it’s clear that “saving the planet” is the wrong goal. Unless earth gets obliterated by an asteroid or experiences some similar catastrophic event, the planet could go on for several billion years. But without the biosphere that makes it possible for us to eat and breathe, humanity could not survive.

The question we should be asking is what caused the precipitous increase in species loss and what can we do to reverse it. To me, it all started when we disconnected from our wild origins. While agricultural and technological revolutions have enabled massive population growth and innovation , they have also instilled the belief that we can control nature, that our planet is an infinite resource to be mined for our advancement, comfort and entertainment.

Today 56 percent of the world population lives in urban areas, a percentage expected to grow to nearly 70 percent by 2050 . That means that more than half of us are cut off from reminders that we are still part of nature and utterly dependent on its health. It’s only when something truly devastating happens, like the recent flooding in Dubai, that we remember that even the greatest human advancements can be brought to a standstill by nature’s power.

I am not calling for us to leave all modern comforts behind, just pleading for us to get to know nature better, rather than try to “save” her.

In the past decade I have taken more than 4,000 dives in the Sea Forest. My encounters with mollusks, sharks and jellyfish there have convinced me that there is much we will lose if we do not value the tremendous abundance of life on earth.

We do this first by protecting biodiversity hot spots and by restoring degraded ecosystems; the enormous regenerative power I see every day in nature is what gives me hope for the future. It also means learning from and supporting Indigenous people who protect 80 percent of the world’s biodiversity and who have, over millenniums, developed many innovative ways to live with the land and sea. One promising example of partnership is a recent grant from the National Science Foundation to support collaboration between Indigenous ecological knowledge and Western science.

Activities that cause long-term destruction of the sea and earth, such as strip mining , deep sea mining and industrial trawling, need to be halted immediately. Farming methods have to change, with greater emphasis on soil recovery and regeneration . We must continue to find alternatives to fossil fuels and push for a worldwide reduction in the production and use of plastics.

But each of us has a role to play, too; it starts with challenging ourselves to reconnect with the wild. So much of our modern world seems designed to tame us: to dull our minds, to separate us from the natural world, to convince us that what will help us survive is more consumption.

Like my octopus friends, we fill our houses with shiny new things. But our piles of stuff are much bigger and the cost of acquisition much greater.

We can break free of this tame conditioning. When we dedicate even just a few minutes per day to observing wild creatures on their own terms, in their own homes, regardless of where we live, we connect with the concept of biodiversity not simply on an intellectual level but also on an emotional level. We see the world differently — and ourselves, too.

How strange it is that one silly primate can see itself as separate from all those it shares this world with. What might happen if we remembered we are a part of this wild world — and let that understanding and humility guide every choice we make?

Craig Foster is a co-founder of the Sea Change Project and the author of the forthcoming “Amphibious Soul: Finding the Wild in a Tame World.” His film “My Octopus Teacher” won the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2021.

Earth Day: How a senator’s idea more than 50 years ago got people fighting for their planet

Millions of people around the world will pause on Monday, at least for a moment, to mark Earth Day. It’s an annual event founded by people who hoped to stir activism to clean up and preserve a planet that is now home to some 8 billion humans and assorted trillions of other organisms.

Here are answers to some common questions about Earth Day and how it came to be:

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EARTH DAY?

Earth Day has its roots in growing concern over pollution in the 1960s, when author Rachel Carson’s 1962 book “Silent Spring,” about the pesticide DDT and its damaging effects on the food chain, hit bestseller lists and raised awareness about nature’s delicate balance.

But it was a senator from Wisconsin, Democrat Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea that would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons onto the southern California coast in 1969. Nelson, after touring the spill site, had the idea of doing a national “teach-in” on the environment, similar to teach-ins being held on some college campuses at the time to oppose the war in Vietnam.

Nelson and others, including activist Denis Hayes, worked to expand the idea beyond college campuses, with events all around the country, and came up with the Earth Day name.

WHY WAS APRIL 22 CHOSEN FOR EARTH DAY?

A history of the movement by EarthDay.org, where Hayes remains board chair emeritus, says the date of the first Earth Day — April 22, 1970 — was chosen because it fell on a weekday between spring break and final exams and the aim was to attract as many students as possible.

IS EARTH DAY A REAL HOLIDAY?

It’s not a federal holiday. But many groups use the day to put together volunteer events with the environment in mind, such as cleanups of natural areas. You can see a list of events worldwide , or register your own event, at EarthDay.org.

FILE - Activists display prints replicating solar panels during a rally to mark Earth Day at Lafayette Square, Washington, April 23, 2022. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe, File)

HAS IT HAD AN IMPACT?

It has. The overwhelming public response to the first Earth Day is credited with adding pressure for the U.S. Congress to do more to address pollution, and it did, passing landmark legislation including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. More broadly, it’s seen as the birth of the modern environmental movement. In later years, Earth Day expanded to become a truly global event. It now claims to have motivated action in more than 192 countries.

In 2000, Earth Day began taking aim at climate change, a problem that has grown rapidly more urgent in recent years.

WHAT’S THE THEME THIS YEAR?

This year’s Earth Day is focusing on the threat that plastics pose to our environment, with a call to end all single-use plastic and find replacements for their use so they can quickly be phased down.
