A home for their hearts.

A friend of mine who is a former kindergarten teacher whom homeschools her granddaugher is using Investigations in Number Data and Space. She said she used it when she taught and loves it. I loved her review of it but she told me it would be to hard for me to teach without training. She said that Envision Math would be the closer thing to it and easy to teach. So if you have used Envision math what did you think of it? I'm wanting something that teaches my dc to love math and not fear it. Would Envision math do that?

Well, the program she apparently loves is TERC Investigations, which is generally loathed by many. Just google "TERC Investigations criticism" or "TERC Investigations reviews" and you'll turn up a LOT of harsh critiques. I've heard less about EnVision, but none of it was good either.

Hmm I'll have to do some research on that. Can you tell me what you have heard about enVision?

I just know I heard some vague mentions of people saying it wasn't good, but I don't know for sure. A quick google search gave me... Some anecdotal reviews of Envision are here (scroll down past the one for Everyday Math) and they're all negative. But looking around, there were a number of positive homeschool reviews like this one .

Since it's mostly a school program, you might try asking on the afterschooling board?

My kids use enVision in school. If you search this forum, you will see some threads on it in the afterschool sub forum. It's an O.K. program. It borrows very heavily from SM (even bar diagrams) and certainly teaches conceptual understanding. On the negative side, it attempts to show different ways of approaching math and not focus on one. This was most apparent for me during addition. While SM focused on making tens, enVision dabbled in everything, including making doubles. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but can be confusing for some. My biggest problem with enVision is the lack of challenging work. Since it's done for classroom use, the level of difficulty is adjusted toward the middle and doesn't serve strong students well. I wouldn't use it for homeschool. We afterschool with SM and BA and MEP.

Most kids in my son's second grade classroom use fingers to count. I don't know if this is normal or a poor reflection of the program or just plain bad teaching.

My sister works for a public school and was able to get me K-6th of Envision math for free. I looked at it but decided to only use it as a supplement. It seemed to jump around a lot and doesn't give near enough practice.

umsami

My kids' charter school used both Envision Math and Saxon. (They had math twice/day). While I liked certain things about it, neither my sons or I were a real fan of Envision. IMHO while Envision might be OK for bricks-and-morter, if you're thinking about homeschooling, there are lots of better choices out there. Right Start, Real Singapore Math, CLE, Math-U-See, Math Mammoth, Miquon, Etc. :)

I have taught for over 30 years. Our school purchased the envision math program for the sum of over 10 thousand dollars. We are a small private school and did not have the money for this foolish investment. We jumped onboard bc they claimed to cover and teach the new cc standards. Their videos introducing each lesson also appealed to us. Kids like animation, right?

Sadly. Their customer service is lacking. I kept getting switched around. No one could answer my question about logging in. Their cd videos are lame. My students (kdg) say "seriously"? They do not like them. Weird vocabulary, weak, shallow lessons, poor if any connection from classroom work to that nights homework.

We thought we had done our research. This is a very poor program. Parents, students, teachers, & administration all very disappointed, confused, and unhappy.

Oh! After the initial outlay of the thousands it cost my class over 600 dollars for the student materials again this year. That was for one classroom.

We thought we were disappointed in Saxon but envision is weaker, more lame and very user unfriendly to students, teachers, and parents.

Sorry. I own no stock in other programs. Simply trying to spare even one school our pain.

trulycrabby

I purchased the 4th grade Envision Math Common Core Textbook and Student Workbook because the local school uses it and I wanted to see what they were doing. It's not horrible but it's not great, either. It's loosely based on Singapore Math, a fair number of ambiguous questions that DH and I were scratching our heads over (we are both very strong in math), and not enough practice problems for the concepts that are taught. I used it for one or two lessons like prime numbers, but nothing else. If you use it, I suggest you purchase the student workbook because it is better than the book.

I agree with umsami there are lots of better choices for homeschooling curriculum and second her suggestions for curriculum.

Savvas Learning Company Introduces the Newly Updated enVision Mathematics 2024

Nation’s best-selling math series made even better with more real-world learning experiences to make math meaningful to students.

PARAMUS, NEW JERSEY — Savvas Learning Company , a K-12 next-generation learning solutions leader, introduced its newly updated enVision Mathematics series with many exciting enhancements inspired by feedback from math teachers, including brand-new family engagement resources to support student learning at home.

enVision © 2024 , the newest edition of Savvas Learning Company’s highly-effective and best-selling math series for grades K-12, is now packed with even more student-centered activities that engage learners in real-world, meaningful math, along with a variety of new instructional support tools to save teachers time while offering them flexibility for lesson planning.

“Savvas has always been focused on providing educators the highest-quality math curriculum combined with the most flexible resources to make teaching easier, a commitment that has made enVision the nation’s most popular math program used in thousands of classrooms everywhere,” said Bethlam Forsa, CEO of Savvas Learning Company. “With new features centered around students and more supportive resources for both home and classroom, enVision offers an innovative curriculum that helps educators teach with confidence and engages students with hands-on, problem-based learning.”

enVision Mathematics provides comprehensive, standards-based content to support all students in developing deep conceptual understanding, procedural skill, and fluency, with relevant application opportunities to become college- and career-ready. The nationally recognized series — including enVision Mathematics © 2024 Grades K-5 , enVision Mathematics © 2024 Grades 6-8 , and enVision A|G|A © 2024 Algebra 1 | Geometry | Algebra 2 — features problem-based learning, performance tasks, and visual instruction, providing students multiple ways to learn.

Accessible on the newly enhanced Savvas Realize, the K-12 education industry’s most innovative learning management system, enVision offers the flexibility of digital, print, and blended instruction, and provides educators with the tools they need to personalize learning for all students. A selection of new features includes:

  • Student-Led Learning Activities: High-interest, hands-on math projects, like the new “Let’s Investigate!” digital lessons, add to an array of multimedia lessons and project-based learning activities, including 3-Act Math Modeling , Pick a Project , and STEM Projects , that invite every student’s input to build a collective understanding of new ideas.
  • Flexible Teacher Support: Embedded teacher support and meaningful professional development are built right into the program, while new, ready-made instructional materials for each lesson make teacher preparation time quick and easy.
  • Family Engagement Resources: Shareable digital resources for every lesson are specifically designed to empower families with easy-to-understand topic previews and lesson summaries, along with worked-out homework examples, learning videos, and suggestions for math practice at home.
  • Personalized Student Practice: The new Savvy Adaptive Practice delivers just-right math instruction and personalized practice automatically in real time, allowing students to review prerequisite concepts or accelerate forward as they practice.

Savvas also announced that its Savvas Math Screener and Diagnostic Assessments (MSDA) tool, for use with enVision Mathematics K-8, now includes mid-year and year-end growth assessments to help educators monitor student progress and skills proficiency throughout the school year. Easily administered via Savvas Realize, the MSDA offers data-driven insights with standards-based instructional content recommendations to help teachers tailor instruction and address students’ individual learning needs. District-level report visualizations also make monitoring district assessment administration and student performance easy and efficient.

With its unique and proven instructional design, enVision offers comprehensive vertical alignment from kindergarten through Algebra 2, ensuring schools and districts meet student and teacher needs with one trusted program. Educators like Josh Robertson, secondary curriculum and instruction director for the Houston County School District in Alabama, agree: “One of the reasons I like enVision is that it’s a consistent program in all the K-12 classrooms across our district. That’s invaluable for our students.”

“Our district has had great success with enVision Math ,” Robertson continued. “We have seen a significant increase in the rigor of the material being taught, and with that, an increase in student achievement. The curriculum is rigorous yet supportive, as it builds the level of rigor into the lesson. The program also provides our students with engaging material and opportunities for collaboration as well as challenge problems and activities. With enVision , the possibilities are really endless with what our students can do.”

enVision Math Information and Resources Department of Academics | East Brunswick Public Schools

Alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) is mandated in the State of NJ. All children in East Brunswick Public Schools participate in a rigorous standards-based mathematics program. Mathematics instruction across the grade levels includes a balanced approach, with conceptual understanding intertwined with fact fluency and problem-solving skills.

East Brunswick Public Schools adopted enVision Math  for Grades K-6 in Fall 2022. enVision was created by award-winning authors and researchers - two of whom were NCTM presidents. Others have written many books and have sat on the NCTM board. enVision Math is a top-rated program on edreports and sits on an award-winning platform . The goal of enVision Math is to have every child achieve grade-level standards while developing an appreciation for mathematics reasoning and thinking. It has a range of resources to meet a large variety of learners.

There are many ways to solve a problem and one of the goals of the program is to have students use a method that is meaningful and makes sense to them - while refining approaches to move toward efficiency. The trajectory of learning generally moves from concrete to representations then abstract. In fact, every lesson moves through these stages.

The enVision Math program was fully implemented as it was created and in all grades at once to provide fidelity to the implementation and in order to provide simultaneous professional development. We are confident the enVision Math program is a better fit for our students than our previous program. The District initiative of meeting the needs of all learners can best be achieved by ensuring high-quality programs and instruction are occurring in all classrooms, every day.

Parents and Guardians, please watch this video to learn about the resources you can use at home to support your child.

On the Savvas website, the Savvas Parent's Corner provides additional helpful resources and guides, such as the How-To Videos for Students & Parents and Learning at Home: 7 Tips for Parents .

Teachers and parents are important partners in learning. If there are any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Math Screener and Diagnostic Assessment (MSDA)

Students in grades 3-6 will take a math screener and diagnostic assessment that will help their teachers determine a baseline level of math performance. The Math Screener and Diagnostic Assessment will identify skills gaps and help teachers target instruction.

Successmaker

On Sept 5th, a representative from Savvas, the company that owns enVision, trained a core group of teachers to use an intervention program aligned with enVision called Successmaker. Successmaker is research-based and designed to adapt and provide practice skills based on individual student needs, generate detailed reports on student growth, and highlight areas of intervention. The Savvas representative will continue to train and support teachers throughout the school year.

Students in grades 3-6 will take a math screener and diagnostic assessment (MSDA) that will help their teachers determine a baseline level of math performance. These results will inform Successmaker and the program will provide problems and topics that are differentiated to each student’s individual math performance and needs. A pilot group in grades 3-6 will be using Successmaker , an online practice tool for skill additional reinforcement.

Classroom Instruction

Click the questions below to reveal the answers. Click 'More' to see additional questions in this category.

How much math instructional time are the students receiving daily?

The introduction of the day’s lesson happens during the Visual Learning Bridge segment of the lesson between the introductory Solve & Share activity and prior to the Assess & Differentiate segment. Teachers will build off the day’s Solve & Share which introduces the day’s learning objective via a problem-solving and sharing approach and then use the Visual Animation Plus video to help teach through examples in the student workbook. The small group Teacher Table work then builds upon the daily lesson based on the collected student data where a differentiated approach ranging from support to enrichment is used. On average, using the Split Classroom model, students are in whole group instruction for approximately 20 minutes and then rotate between partner work and the Teacher Table for 20 minutes each for the remainder of the teaching block. For the Student Rotation Model, students are in whole group instruction for approximately 15 minutes and then rotate between individual work, partner work, and the Teacher Table for 15-minute rotations each for the remainder of the teaching block.

How does this program help my child with special needs?

One of the great things about enVision math is the wealth of resources and activities that are available for student support. Teachers have access to a variety of resources based on individual student needs and can assign them digitally or in paper format. In addition, any enVision resource is editable which allows teachers to better tailor an activity to the particular academic needs of their students.

How will individual student learning gaps be addressed?

As we have always done in the District, teachers collect and use classroom data to guide their daily lessons, build their student groups, and inform their instruction. Students within a classroom that require additional support to fill in any learning gaps will work with the classroom teacher during the Assess & Differentiate segment of the class to help address these gaps. In addition, since daily homework can also be differentiated, students may be given support or reteaching resources to help address any learning gaps that the classroom teacher may have observed.

Can teachers spend more time on a lesson if the students are having difficulty?

While the District has a suggested timeline for each grade level, teachers may need to alter their plans based on collected student classroom data. This may mean spending more time on a lesson if the data shows that students need more work with its content or less time than originally planned if a lesson goes faster than originally planned. In both cases, teachers have a wealth of resources and activities to choose from within the enVision math program that allows for student academic needs ranging from support to enrichment. Teachers can choose from these resources and personalize them to their students based on the classroom data that has been collected.

Extra Practice

There are a wealth of print and online resources and practice problems available for each grade level, many of which are available in your child’s print workbooks or online through their student account. It is always a good idea to contact your child’s classroom teacher if you are looking for additional resources or practice for your son or daughter and they can point you in the right direction. Any additional practice done will not affect your child’s grade at HUES or progress toward the grade-level standards in grades K-4.

Will this program be supported by Kumon, Math Genie, etc.?

Any other support programs for math that are standards-based would be supported.

Will there be summer advancement/remediation opportunities?

East Brunswick does not currently offer summer advancement opportunities at the elementary level but does have support programs in place for math and ILA for those students who qualify.
