To learn more about the course expectations, please review the Capstone Syllabus .

How to Register

Capstone closed.

Capstone Options

Psychology BA majors may select between three experiences, including a research laboratory capstone (PSY 3901W), individual interest capstone (PSY 3902W), and community engagement capstone (PSY 3903W). The course you choose will determine the specific requirements and expectations associated with your capstone experience.

Watch the video at the top of the page to and read the descriptions below to learn more about the Psychology Capstone Course and which track is most suitable for you:

Capstone in Psychology - Research Laboratory: PSY 3901W

The research lab project allows you to take full advantage of the abundance of psychological research happening right here in the Department of Psychology. In this option, you will draw from your experience in a faculty research lab ( PSY 4/5993 ) to help develop the topic of your capstone paper for the PSY 3901W class. This option requires you to secure a laboratory research experience in a faculty member's lab for PSY 4/5993 credits (3 credits minimum) either the semester prior to or concurrently with your PSY 3901W enrollment. Because research lab positions are not guaranteed, we recommend BA students only select this option if they already have a PSY 4/5993 position secured.

Before class begins: Arrange to assist in the lab of a faculty member through PSY 4/5993.

Capstone in Psychology - Individual Interests: PSY 3902W

The individual interest project involves developing a project that relates to your personal or occupational interests; it includes extra reading or contact with people working in your area of interest. The most common way to satisfy this requirement is to read a book written by a psychologist for a general audience or to interview at least three professionals working in your area of interest. Other ideas may be discussed with the course instructor.

Before class begins: You do not need to take any action prior to the start of the individual interest capstone.

Capstone in Psychology - Community Engagement: PSY 3903W

Interested in connecting your studies of psychology to important issues in your local community? The Center for Community-Engaged Learning  provides you with the opportunity to work onsite at a nearby community organization for approximately four hours each week throughout the semester. You will then draw from this community experience to help identify the topic of your capstone paper for the PSY 3903W class.

Before class begins: You do not need to take any action to find a community placement site until you receive an email from the Center for Community-Engaged Learning staff but you are welcome to get started early. You will receive the email either right before the term begins or within the first week of class. It will contain detailed instructions on how to move forward with the community site placement process, which involves being given access to a database filled with service positions. Otherwise, feel free to reach out to the Center before the semester starts if you would like to get started early.

2022 Capstones

By Christine Cornwell

This capstone explores and highlights the key ingredients that foster self-efficacy and build the character strength of perseverance, especially in children of primary age. By understanding how these positive psychology concepts relate to each other, this capstone discovers that children can achieve a life of excellence when they believe they can and choose to persevere despite difficulties and failures. Further, this capstone demonstrates why a story is the most compelling way to engage and connect with children. Through the power of story, a positive psychology children's picture book and story-related activities will bring the concepts to life in a fun, fantastical, and fictional way. These applications aim to introduce and familiarize children with valued skills to build a stronger sense of self-efficacy and develop their character strengths that societies and cultures around the world value and consider worthwhile cultivating.

By Kimberly Dickman

The empirical evidence of the incredible power of touch to both ameliorate the negative and to bolster the positive is undeniable. From Harlow’s monkeys to the Romanian orphans, the lack of touch is shown to impact the quality of life and the ability to live. Research on tactile therapy with premature babies has shown the potent impact of touch on growth, development, and connection. This paper proposes that touch be included in the science of applied positive psychology. Though there are factors such as sexual violence and contagious diseases that caution us from physically engaging with others, we cannot allow these nuanced factors to stop us from investigating a potential arena for well-being, thriving, and living a good life. A call for future empirical research and positive interventions with touch will be presented in this paper.

By Mark O’Brien

Background: Posttraumatic growth (PTG)—positive changes that people may experience in the aftermath of highly distressing experiences—has been observed in survivors of a variety of events but has not been previously studied among people who have caused accidental death or injury (PCADIs). In addition, questions remain about the role, in PTG, of changes in the assumptive world and the relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support.

Method: Participants (N = 528), included PCADIs (n = 44) and a non-trauma comparison group (n = 484), who completed the Primals Inventory and measures of personality, anxiety, and depression. PCADIs (n = 43) also completed measures of PTG, PTG behavioral changes, social support, and life satisfaction.

Results: Modest levels of PTG commensurate with survivors of other relevant forms of distress were observed. Results demonstrated significant differences between primal world beliefs Good, Safe, Enticing, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable in PCADIs and non-trauma survivors as well as significant positive relationships between PTG and the primals Good, Safe, Alive, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable and between PTG and reported behavior changes related to PTG, but no significant relationships were found between PTG and distress, PTG and social support, or PTG and personality traits Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, or Agreeableness (though a significant negative relationship was observed between PTG and Neuroticism).

Conclusions: PCADIs may experience PTG that both influences and is influenced by primal world beliefs, but the hypothesized relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support were not observed. Additional studies with larger PCADI populations may find these relationships exist at a statistically significant level. And future research should aim to develop interventions addressing the distress and growth potential of this population.

The stories we tell can shape our lives and our experiences. Unfortunately, many African American adolescents are often subjected to stereotypes and one-sided deficit narratives that can become self-fulfilling prophecies undermining their achievement, aspirations, and well-being. However, the college admission process offers an intervention opportunity to help these students tell a different story—their story. In this paper, the author presents an analysis of the threats and opportunities inherent in the college admission process and a literature review on topics aligned to three pillars—beliefs, belonging, and becoming. The paper concludes with the application plan for an intervention that leverages the college admission essay and essay-writing process to reframe beliefs and shape positive personal narratives. Inspired by research from narrative psychology, social psychology, and positive psychology, OurStory challenges dominant deficit narratives and aims to improve academic outcomes, college matriculation rates, and adolescent flourishing and well-being.

In people with cystic fibrosis, a genetic, progressive disease with a shortened life expectancy, depression rates have been measured at twice the global average, which is concerning because depression is itself a risk factor for people with chronic illnesses. This empirical study aims to assess 1) how positive views in the form of optimism, hope, or positive primal world beliefs in people with cystic fibrosis compared to the general population, and 2) whether positive views correlate with better health and greater well-being in people living with cystic fibrosis. A cross-sectional design was employed using validated psychology questionnaires to determine levels of well-being in people with CF (n = 117) compared to control groups (n = 88, n = 599). Independent T-tests and ANCOVA data showed that positive views in the form of optimism, hope and primals in people with cystic fibrosis are similar to those of the general population. Linear regression models showed that optimism, hope and primals did not correlate with FEV1, the standard metric for measuring lung function. Data suggests that positive views about the future and the world can co-exist with elevated rates of depression and are independent from physical health metrics. Further research could assess if cultivating positive views could reduce levels of depression in people with cystic fibrosis.

This comprehensive assignment is your chance to showcase the knowledge and skills you’ve accumulated throughout your educational tenure. Here, we’ll delve into what makes a great capstone project and provide some inspiring ideas to help you find your ideal topic.

🎓 Understanding the Capstone Project

First, let’s define what a capstone project is. It’s a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience within your field of study. This task can take various shapes, from case studies and research papers to performances and exhibits, and its nature largely depends on your academic discipline.

The project’s ultimate aim is to engage you in critical thinking and problem-solving, contributing to your field in meaningful ways.

🎯 How to Choose a Perfect Capstone Topic: A Comprehensive Guide

Picking the perfect topic for your capstone project is a journey rather than a simple choice. A well-chosen topic fuels your passion, keeps you motivated, and showcases your academic growth. Here’s a comprehensive step-by-step guide to make the journey smooth and rewarding:

  • Discover Your Academic Passion: What excites you in your field of study? Look back on your academic journey. Reflect on courses that kept you hooked or career objectives that drive you. This passion could ignite the spark for your capstone project.
  • Understand the Importance: Your capstone topic should be significant, with the potential to add to or enhance existing knowledge in your field. It should align with industry trends, meet contemporary needs, and lend fresh insights or a unique viewpoint.
  • Scope it Right: Your capstone project should be an exhibition of your academic prowess, but it shouldn’t be overwhelmingly broad. Conversely, it shouldn’t be so specific that it limits your exploration. Strike a balance between ambition and feasibility.
  • Embark on a Preliminary Expedition: Early stage research is a stepping stone to solidifying your topic. Dig into existing literature and debates. This understanding can aid in sculpting your approach, ensuring your project brings something new to the table.
  • Welcome Perspectives: Share your thoughts with your mentor or colleagues. They can offer valuable feedback, suggest alternate angles, or highlight any potential roadblocks. An outside perspective often brings clarity.
  • Measure the Practicality: Last but certainly not least, check the feasibility of your chosen topic. ake a moment to evaluate the resources, time, and competencies needed to successfully complete your project. Aspiring high is commendable, yet it’s crucial to stay grounded and realistic.

Remember, your capstone topic should be a torchbearer of your intellectual curiosity, paving the way for deep research and substantial contribution to your field. Choose wisely and let your journey to knowledge be an exhilarating one.

importance of capstone courses

Capstone courses are part of university curricula and are strategically designed to prepare students for a seamless transition from academia to the workforce. They may include research endeavors and theses. However, each has a distinct focus and purpose.

These projects often highlight practical applications and skill enrichment, making them more aligned with professional practice (often done as a group project).

On the other hand, research and theses contribute to the academic body of knowledge, delving deeper into theoretical aspects. Bridging this knowledge gap is essential to empowering students with the understanding needed to make informed decisions about their final-year assessments.

In a broader context, a capstone project is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. It provides a platform to reflect on academic journeys, apply acquired knowledge to real-world scenarios, and develop problem-solving skills. By addressing tangible challenges, learners enhance their readiness for the professional world.

The benefits of capstone projects extend beyond academic prowess. They empower students to navigate complex, work-related issues, through practical experience and fostering a deeper understanding on a particular subject.

This synthesis of knowledge and practical application enriches the graduate student's educational experience and typically involves graduates with a skill set essential for success in their higher education.

Capstone Project vs. Capstone Course

Although the terms "capstone project" and "capstone course" are often used interchangeably, it's necessary to understand their differences:

A  capstone project   is an independent assignment that encapsulates students' academic learning and demonstrates their proficiency in a specific discipline or field.

The focus is on individual research, problem-solving, or creative endeavors, providing a medium to demonstrate the knowledge acquired as students finish their studies. A capstone project is part of a course (think of it as a final assignment).

A  capstone course   contains a broader coursework and educational experience. It is an entire course (like any other) in which students incorporate and apply their knowledge gained throughout a program. It often requires students to collaborate on projects, engage in discussions, and participate in various activities. It can take longer to complete and varies depending on the institution.

Examples Across Various Majors

Students across different degree programs engage in multifaceted capstone experiences at the end of their college careers. These experiences can vary widely, from individual research to collaborative group endeavors, reflecting the essence of their academic achievements.

For example, in fields such as political science, students may delve into a senior thesis, conducting extensive research and showcasing their critical thinking skills.

Alternatively, within literature courses, the last capstone course may involve a comprehensive literature review, illustrating the culmination of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course of the degree program.

Many capstone courses extend beyond conventional research papers, requiring you to work on a final project addressing a real-world problem. This collaborative effort and practical method, which can be conducted in small groups, emphasizes teamwork, a significant amount of research, and a strong work ethic (fundamental skills that prepare students for the workplace).

In addition to meeting the degree program and requirements, these capstone experiences often involve a final exhibition, allowing students to present and demonstrate their problem statement to professors, other students, peers, and sometimes even external stakeholders.

A capstone course experience serves as a bridge to graduate degrees or even doctorates, honing research capabilities that are essential for success and develop the necessary skills for potential employers.

Capstone Project Process

As Jolanta Burke and Majella Dempsey highlight in their Practical Guide for Students Book , commencing a capstone project is like constructing a house:

Firstly, you must establish solid foundations, much like a house, ensuring reliability. Then, continue learning and enhancing your skills to build it. Once armed with the necessary skills and information, the next step is to decide on the materials, devise a plan of action, and follow through until the house—your project—is complete and ready for use.

Just as a house requires a robust foundation, a capstone project initiates with meticulous planning. This phase encompasses defining content, goals, and methodologies, ensuring the project demonstrates most capstone courses.

For instance, if your project revolves around human-centered design, identify a problem, such as a shortage of shelters in a city, and conduct research. Then, the person and approach to solving this problem should be determined, perhaps by studying the owner of an existing shelter and identifying gaps in current approaches.

While delving into extensive research, it's crucial for students to hone academic capabilities by studying other courses and examining what has already been done about the specific problem. Seeking input from people, professors, and TAs are invaluable. Once enough material, like a literature review or interviews, is gathered, present it to your professor for feedback before progressing.

Pre-Execution

Jus like choosing construction materials for a house, students must decide on materials and formulate a detailed action plan, meeting degree or course requirements. This phase demands careful consideration of methodologies and strategies, emphasizing material determination—whether it's an app, a history psychology project, or any other course. Craft a structured plan and present it as a proposal before delving deeper into the subject.

The final stage involves executing the plan and completing the project, demonstrating the capstone experience. The research project needs to be prepared for use, showcasing the culmination of efforts.

Presentation

The presentation serves as the grand reveal of the completed project. A well-structured project and a compelling pitch, typically required, is essential to demonstrate its readiness for use.

This approach ensures a seamless transition from planning to execution, essential for success in capstone courses and the culmination of their academic journey.

capstone project group work- group of students

The preparatory nature of these projects makes students discover what they enjoy the most, what comes easily, and the potential to find areas of improvement. The benefits are crucial for student' personal and professional development, providing a real connection between academic knowledge and real-world application.

Gaining Skills and Experiences

Capstone projects showcase the skills and experiences accumulated throughout a student's educational journey. From research prowess to critical thinking and effective communication, the project culminates in these proficiencies, bringing them to the student's forefront.

Practical Transition to the Next Phase

Capstone projects are vital in preparing students to transition to the professional world or advance in academic pursuits. It's a practical initiation into college career, familiarizing students with the challenges and responsibilities they'll encounter in their future careers or advanced degrees at other schools.

Initiation of Work or Advanced Studies

Working on a capstone project program allows students to navigate the complexities they'll encounter in their chosen field. This experiential learning program equips them with valuable insights and the confidence and adaptability required to transition to the professional world or pursue advanced degrees.

Holistic Development for Future Success

Capstone projects contribute significantly to students' and major programs' holistic development, ensuring they are academically qualified and possess the practical skills demanded by prospective employers for their future endeavors.

graphs and data to examine challenges and tips

Here are some potential burdens and some capstone journey strategies that have helped me throughout my projects during school.

Choosing a Subject:

  • Challenge:  Defining the size of your capstone project can be daunting. I recommend balancing ambition with feasibility. For example, if you are trying to help dog shelters, maybe focus on how to prevent owners from abandoning them by educating dog owners. In the case of a more research-based project, look at the literature review of your research focus and build upon what has already been investigated.
  • Strategy:  Begin with a clear project scope and revisit the risks regularly. Prioritize key objectives to avoid complicating your project, and focus on a single issue .

Time Management:

  • Challenge:  Capstone projects often overlap with other academic commitments. Time management becomes paramount.
  • Strategy:  Create a detailed timeline, allocating specific tasks to manageable time frames. Regularly reassess and adjust as needed.

Research Roadblocks:

  • Challenge:  Conducting extensive research may lead to information overload or difficulty finding relevant sources.
  • Strategy:  Define research questions early. What is the project doing? For whom? In what builds upon? Utilize academic databases and seek guidance from mentors for targeted resource discovery.

Team Dynamics (if applicable):

  • Challenge:  Group projects may need help coordinating schedules, differing work styles, or conflicting ideas.
  • Strategy:  Establish clear communication channels, set expectations from the beginning, and address conflicts promptly.

Master's in Clinical Counseling Psychology > Capstone

  • Plan of Study
  • Alumni Careers

Students admitted to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology Program have the option of completing either a clinical-counseling capstone project or a master's thesis in order to fulfill their degree requirements. Details about the thesis option are available on the Thesis website . The Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project procedures are explained below.

In order to complete the capstone project in a timely manner, students should begin researching appropriate topics during their first year of graduate study. Students should solicit a Clinical-Counseling Psychology faculty member as their project chair no later than the end of spring semester of the first year. In the early stages of the project, the student and faculty member typically work together to develop an appropriate topic. It is recommended that students review what is being published in current clinical and counseling psychology journals for potential capstone project topics.

By the start of the fall semester of the second year, students should complete the  CLINICAL-COUNSELING CAPSTONE PROJECT CHAIR and TOPIC  form, which identifies both the project chair and topic. The form also includes an override request for PSY 490 Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project. The Project Chair form is an interactive Word document that should be completed on a computer and printed. Students and faculty members should sign and date the Project Chair form, which should then be submitted to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology Program coordinator. When the Project Chair form is approved by the coordinator, the Graduate Programs Office will notify students when they can register for PSY 490.

Students will work with their project chair to further develop the topic. Students must write a capstone project paper. When the paper is nearly complete, students and their project chair should solicit another Clinical-Counseling Psychology faculty member as the project reader. The project chair and reader should independently evaluate the capstone project paper. The project chair, in consultation with the reader, must approve the project paper before the student can schedule an oral defense of the capstone project. If the project chair identifies any changes to the capstone project paper, the student must complete these changes and submit a revised capstone project paper to the project chair and reader for a second evaluation.

The capstone project requires student to write an intensive theoretical paper, research review, or position paper on an emerging topic or issue of contemporary relevance. The project must be at least 30 pages long, excluding references. The project must address the relevance of the topic in the following areas:

  • Foundations of behavior (normal and/or abnormal)
  • Assessment and measurement
  • Applications to therapy
  • Relevant ethical and professional issues
  • Cultural considerations and relevance to special populations
  • Research challenges and needs

For example, a student may be interested in panic disorder. The project might address how panic disorder is assessed and diagnosed, what form the behavior takes and its etiology, how panic disorder is treated, any relevant ethical or professional issues in the assessment and treatment of panic disorder, future research directions needed, and cultural differences in the assessment and treatment of panic disorder. Some of these domains would require more depth than others given the project's topic, but all of the domains must be addressed in a satisfactory manner in the capstone project before it is defended.

After receiving approval from the project chair, students must defend their capstone project in a public forum. The project chair and reader will be in attendance along with any members of the University academic community who are interested in the project's topic. The department encourages graduate students to attend a capstone project defense in order to observe the process.

The capstone project should be defended at a time that is mutually agreeable to the student, project chair, and reader. The capstone project must be defended between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session (i.e., excluding University holidays, final exams week, or semester breaks). When an acceptable time has been determined, students should contact the Graduate Programs Office to reserve a room. The Graduate Programs Office will notify the students when a room has been reserved. Students also need to inform the Graduate Programs Office which faculty member is the project reader.

At least one week before the defense date, students must submit to the Graduate Programs Office by 12:00 p.m. (Noon) a printed copy of the capstone project. Students must also provide a copy of the project to the project chair and reader; the copy may be printed or sent electronically, depending on the preferences of the project chair and reader. The Graduate Programs Office will announce the scheduled defense to the department's graduate students and faculty members. The capstone project defense will also be posted on the University Events website and on the bulletin board across from the department's office. Students must also complete the OUTCOME OF CLINICAL-COUNSELING CAPSTONE PROJECT DEFENSE  form. Students should take this Defense form to their project defense.

During the defense, the project chair and reader will assess the student’s understanding of the issues raised in the capstone project. Students are expected to summarize their project and answer questions from individuals at the defense. When the discussion has ended, everyone should leave the room except for the project chair and reader. The project chair and reader will discuss the quality of the written and oral components of the capstone project. When the deliberations are complete and a decision has been reached, the student will be asked to return to the room. If the defense is approved by the project chair and reader, the student has passed the defense and the project is complete. The project chair and reader should sign the Outcome of the Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project Defense form. The project chair should submit the signed Defense form to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology coordinator. After the student passes the defense, the final project (incorporating any required changes communicated to the student during the defense) must be submitted electronically to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology coordinator.

If either the defense or responses to the questions during the defense are not satisfactory, the student must schedule a second defense for a later date. If the student does not pass the second oral defense, then the student will not be able to complete the project, which is a master's degree requirement.

Students who have completed all course work and practica, but are still working on a capstone project, must maintain continuous enrollment until they successfully defend their project. Students must register for one credit of PSY 490 each fall and spring semester until the capstone project is successfully defended. Registration for PSY 490 in the summer is required only when a student expects to defend the capstone project and complete the degree by the end of the summer semester. Students should contact the Graduate Programs Office at [email protected] to request an override for PSY 490.

What is a Capstone Project in College?

A woman in a yellow shirt working on her college capstone project

The capstone project in college is the apogee, or completion marker, of a student's coursework leading to the culmination of their program with a degree in their chosen field of study. The original definition of a capstone focuses on the actual stone placed at the top of a wall or building, marking the successful completion of the structure. It's a significant and celebrated piece of architecture, considered to be the most important of an entire construction project.

"(Capstone projects are) the apex of all a student's work done throughout their college career," said Dr. Jeff Czarnec , a social sciences adjunct online and on-campus at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Retired after 23 years in law enforcement, Czarnec served as an associate dean of criminal justice and social sciences at SNHU for nearly a decade. He now leverages his extensive background to teach social sciences, enriching the academic experience with his practical insights.

When entering a capstone course, there's an expectation that you have all the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful.

Dr. Thomas MaCarty, associate dean of social sciences programs at SNHU

You have the opportunity to pick a research topic that is of interest to you and run with it. "After having to write research papers in all of their courses prior to (the capstone), the task is not one to dread, but to enjoy. It is their time to shine as students and to enjoy the journey," MacCarty said.

A capstone course is more than a potential degree requirement. It can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge mastery and creative thinking, which may help you stand out to potential employers.

What is Involved in a Capstone Project?

Dr. Jeff Czarnec, a social sciences adjunct at SNHU

Each university, program and instructor may have different requirements — or models — for a capstone project. According to Czarnec, a general design might first include selecting a topic of interest that the instructor will approve.

Czarnec said that, depending on the program, a capstone may include anything from a video presentation or an architectural model to an art exhibit or short film; however, it almost always includes a paper demonstrating an introduction, theory, evaluation, research and individual issues relevant to the proposal.

"Students are expected to be ready to enter the world as professionals in their field upon completion of the capstone course," said MacCarty.

The time it takes to complete a capstone project usually depends on the course's length. If you're in an undergraduate online program at SNHU, for instance, your capstone course would take eight weeks to complete, Czarnec said.

Capstone courses are research-based, and you can choose your topic early on, allowing you more freedom to conduct research  independently. Capstone topics usually align with a program's specific disciplines, too.

For example, in the social sciences realm, "our focus is on human behavior and cognition, which may be different from a capstone course in business or STEM," MacCarty said.

Find Your Program

Types of capstones.

There are many types of capstone projects that you could consider, and they vary from learner to learner, Czarnec said. "Some will investigate issues or phenomenon that they are familiar with either professionally, personally or courtesy of a discipline-related source, such (as) a police or human services agency," he said.

In a nutshell, a rough outline of a capstone, according to Czarnec, may look something like this:

  • Select a topic and have it approved by the instructor
  • Evaluate relevance to the proposal
  • Perform necessary research
  • Present results in the agreed-upon fashion

Czarnec said that if you're looking for a capstone topic, you may consider focusing on an area you're passionate about or you could also try to ask you instructor for some assistance. For example, Czarnec said that he can act as a guide, mentor, editor and research resource for his students to help them focus and narrow their search for a capstone topic.

Are Capstone Projects Difficult?

"Not necessarily," said Czarnec. "It does force you to be efficient and very specific to topic. No fluff. Straight forward. Razor sharp."

The capstone is more of an opportunity to catch your breath, he said, and to retrace and pull up what you have learned in a more stress-free environment .

"It helps validate students as learners," Czarnec said.

Depending on the major and course requirements, there may be opportunities to connect with outside contacts, not only to assist with the capstone project research and problem statement but also to provide a networking community .

"Not every research project is, nor should they be, the same," Czarnec said. "Everyone has a different approach."

What is the Difference Between a Thesis and a Capstone Project?

A blue and white icon of a pencil writing on lines

A capstone is similar to a thesis in that the starting point involves the strengths needed for a thesis or dissertation work. For example, you may need to consider the skeletal structure of research and form your theory, hypothesis and problem statement.

"While a capstone is certainly a scholarly piece of work and does share some aspects of a thesis, the time and detail that is required of a master's thesis is greater," MacCarty said.

A capstone paper may be 25 pages, whereas a thesis could be 100 or more. If you choose to further your education beyond a bachelor's degree, the capstone project could be an invaluable tool in preparing for a graduate thesis.

Capstone Projects are About Your Success

Capstones of all programs are leading you to the end game, Czarnec said. The goal is to develop you into a well-rounded thinker who can pull their work together in a coherent, articulate, well-organized fashion while considering the demands of the profession or vocation you're interested in.

The focus and intent of a capstone should be to create an effective device to assess and measure all that you've learned throughout your program in an aggregate fashion so you can demonstrate your life-long vocational skills in a nice, neat package.

"My goal is for students to leave the program confident about their skills and abilities," said Czarnec.

MacCarty said that capstone courses should be structured to support your success in fulfilling program requirements and allow you the opportunity to showcase your academic abilities and skills gained throughout your degree program.

A degree can change your life. Choose your program  from 200+ SNHU degrees that can take you where you want to go.

Psychology Capstone

PSY 498/499: PROJECT CAPSTONE

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Project Capstone?

The undergraduate capstone experience is designed to bring reflection and focus to the whole of your college experience. It encourages you to integrate facets of your interests with important concepts from Psychology.

Capstone is a culminating college experience that focuses on features of your interests and requires the use of skills, methodology, and knowledge you have learned throughout your undergraduate curriculum in Psychology.

What are the goals of the Project Capstone?

  • To help you  critically reflect  on,  review  the scientific basis for, and  integrate  what you have learned and accomplished as a psychology major.
  • To  prepare you f or graduation and create a bridge between school and career.
  • To  explore  the cultural, social, and ethical impact of  psychological application  on your community and your daily life.
  • To provide you with a  professional experience  that will enhance your  career portfolio .

How many hours do I need?

The Project Capstone isNOTmerely a matter of putting in some volunteer hours or community service. The Project Capstone requires careful consideration and considerable planning. You need to develop clear learning objectives that provide the basic foundation for your capstone experience. The planning process occurs  during  the PSY 498 class.

What do you do in PSY 498, the Project Capstone?

In PSY 498 you complete your Capstone Portfolio and develop your Capstone Plan. The Capstone Portfolio is composed of a critical analysis of a research proposal (from PSY 225/325 graded with comments), a critical analysis of a pop psychology book, a resume, and a Career Exploration and Statement of Personal/Professional Goals paper. The Capstone Plan is a paper that details your capstone plan; it includes learning objectives, a summary of where you will be and your responsibilities during the capstone experience, and possible ethical considerations. You are also required to have a contract signed by you, your capstone site supervisor, and the capstone professor.

In PSY 498 you also learn what is expected while you are completing your capstone and what is required for your Capstone Presentation. During your capstone experience it is important that you engage in continuous critical analysis and that your analyses are documented regularly. All of which is covered in PSY 498.

What do we do in PSY 499?

A Professional Presentation that articulates the overall goal and objectives of your capstone experience. You also critically evaluate your classmates’ capstone presentations.

When can I get started on my Project Capstone?

Once you have completed a well-thought out capstone plan, obtained a signed contract, AND received approval from your capstone professor,  during PSY 498 . ANY hours completed without a plan and prior approval do not count towards your required 100 hours.

How does the order of PSY 498 & 499 work?

It is best to have at least ONE full term in between PSY 498 & 499. Completing the required hours can often prove to be a major challenge to students in capstone.

When can I take PSY 499, Project Capstone?

Enroll in PSY 499 when you are within no more than 10 hours of completing the required 100 hours is highly advised. You will NOT be able to present your capstone experience until ALL hours are completed.

What do I do for my Project Capstone?

All is explained and discussed in PSY 498. You basically have a choice of either a project or an internship. Most students engage in an internship, however, there are opportunities for projects in our community. Again, all is explained in PSY 498.

IMPORTANT NOTES for Project Capstone

  • You cannot enroll in capstone unless you have successfully completed both PSY 225 & PSY 325. The capstone sequence is designed for you to complete during your senior year.
  • It is assumed that each student entering the PSY 498 Project Capstone has discussed the two capstone options; Research and Project,  with his or her advisor . ALWAYS have a discussion with your advisor regarding which capstone is best for you. Your advisor knows your interests and academic goals. He or she can assist you in making the decision.

PSY 498/499: RESEARCH CAPSTONE

What is the Research Capstone?

Capstone is a culminating college experience that guides you to reflect upon, integrate, and synthesize the knowledge and skills learned during your academic years and to prepare for graduation and your career.

What are the goals of the Research Capstone?

  • To initiate the process of planning and preparing for post-college work/career.
  • To provide you with  research experience  that will further prepare you for graduate research studies or for research and program evaluation conducted in various work settings.
  • To further develop a sensitivity to ethical issues in psychology, especially in conducting research.

What do you do in PSY 498 & 499, the Research Capstone?

In PSY 498 & 499 you plan and conduct a research project.Although different instructors may organize the two terms slightly differently, typically in the first term (498) you will select a research topic, review the literature of published empirical research and write a research proposal paper (which includes your literature review). You will also initiate your application to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the ethical use of human subjects in your research.Either during the interim term between 498 & 499 or during the second term (499), you recruit subjects, collect and analyze the data, and finally during 499, write a research report and present your research in a poster session.(A few students who are doing their research capstones in conjunction with their work in the research labs of particular psychology faculty or in conjunction with their McNair project might be granted variations in the scheduling of components of the research capstone, but discussion with and approval by the capstone teacher is required before initiating the capstone portion of this collaborative project.)

Dispersed throughout the two terms you will also prepare a “post-graduation preparation” portfolio that will include documents such as a professional goals plan, resume, knowledge and skills vita, and practice at job searching.

When can I get started on my Research Capstone?

Although most students formally begin the process during the term they are taking PSY 498-Research, it is a good idea to start thinking about your research topic beforehand. That might involve doing brief literature searches to determine some of the existing research in the topic and thinking critically about how feasible it would be to conduct your selected research project . “Feasible” means taking into consideration 1) that you are an undergraduate student working within a limited time frame (approximately 4 – 5 weeks for recruiting subjects and collecting data), while also meeting your other school demands, 2) that your topic is one that probably does not involve psychopathology (e.g., major depression, eating disorders) or therapy, and 3) that your subjects are adults (18 yrs. and older). Some instructors of 498/9-Research may have a limited range of topics (e.g., learning, memory, & cognition or positive psychology) they are willing to supervise for the course.Talking to the instructor before registering for the course will aid in getting you enrolled in the appropriate research capstone to match your interests.

Are PSY 498 & 499 - Research taken in consecutive terms?

Instructors for the Research Capstone vary in their schedule for enrollment in 498 & 499. Some may require the two courses to be consecutive terms (e.g., fall and winter).Others may organize the course to have a full term in between PSY 498 & 499 (e.g., fall and spring terms).

Psychology Senior Capstone

Every senior at Washington College must complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE), an independent project that is the culmination of their undergraduate studies.

Within the Psychology department the SCE can take two forms.

  • The majority of students elect to conduct the data-driven thesis where they test their research question by collecting and analyzing data from human participants or with the use of animal models.
  • Other students elect the theoretical review option. Here, students answer their research question through a critical analysis and evaluation of the existing literature.

Every SCE begins with conceptualizing of a research question which must be a novel exploration.

Seniors are given the autonomy to select their own research question based on the gaps they discover in the literature regarding their topic of interest.

Advisors do not require students to conceive of research projects similar to their own areas of interests. Instead, advisors are meant to guide seniors through their research discovery process regardless of topic. This allows students to explore any area of psychology that they are excited about and that would best prepare them for their future education or career.

Moreover, our students are conducting high-caliber projects independently. At other colleges and universities where students have an option to complete a thesis, it is frequently only the honors students who are selected, or the project is conducted as a team project.

Allowing every student the opportunity to conduct all aspects of an independent research project sets our students ahead of their peers on the path to success in graduate school and beyond.

The Psychology SCE is a year-long process and is graded by the SCE advisor based on the following criteria:

  • 10% Fall Progress toward the SCE (meeting deadlines with solid products submitted)
  • 10% Senior Assessment
  • 20% Poster Defense (graded by two faculty members, one of which is the SCE advisor)
  • 20% Process (turning in well-written drafts, incorporating feedback, acting as independently as possible, etc.)
  • 40% Final Written Thesis

The Psychology SCE is graded as any other course and gets factored into each student’s grade point average.

Students begin their preparation for the SCE during Junior Seminar, which is held during the spring semester of their junior year. During their weekly meetings, students are provided information about the two thesis options, encouraged to explore literature in the area of their interest, formulate a research question, and present their topic and methodology ideas in a public format.

Students are paired with a faculty advisor during the second half of junior seminar. From then onward, students work one-on-one with their faculty advisor to solidify their research question and methodology and gain advice regarding statistical analyses (for data-driven projects) and manuscript preparation. The department has set deadlines throughout the fall and spring semesters to ensure that students consistently make progress throughout the senior year.

Students with a dual major in Psychology and another discipline who wish to pursue an integrative capstone project should declare this intent early in the first semester of their senior year (or even during the junior year) and secure an agreement from the relevant departments and faculty mentors before commencing their capstone project. The department cannot guarantee that an integrated project acceptable to both departments can be implemented in all instances.

To add depth to your project, consider investigating how short-term memory affects our ability to perform everyday tasks, such as following directions or remembering phone numbers. Choosing the Right Psychology Capstone Project Topic

Capstone courses in psychology are designed to help students demonstrate their mastery of essential ideas, improve their capacity to conduct independent research and ensure they are completely prepared to join the profession as practitioners upon completion of their academic studies. The research presented in the thesis or dissertation is completely original, advances the state of knowledge, and has practical application.

Suppose a bachelor’s thesis is a qualifying work that attests to the student’s overall professional and systematic preparation. In that case, the thesis requirements for a bachelor’s, a specialist’s, and a master’s degree will vary significantly in terms of their content and level of justification. Its familiarity with specialized literature, ability to extrapolate from recent scientific investigations and mathematical prowess are all relevant considerations. Completing a graduate-level psychology course demonstrates the student’s professional competence and systematic understanding of the discipline.

An accomplished bachelor’s thesis might be used as the cornerstone of a seminar on the psyche of the expert. While this doesn’t prove mastery of any research method, it might validate knowledge in that area. However, a master’s thesis is required to show the employment of rigorous scientific procedures and cutting-edge research equipment because of its status as a qualifying work.

Selecting the right psychology capstone project topic is crucial for your project’s success. The best capstone project ideas align with your interests and career goals. Whether you’re interested in short-term memory, social anxiety, depression, or capstone psychological services, ensure the topic you choose sparks your curiosity and offers ample scope for research.

When choosing your topic, consider how the habits formed during your academic journey can influence your choice. For instance, a short-term or long-term memory project could be a good fit if you’ve developed a keen interest in how the brain forms and retrieves memories.

Consider the controlled process of research and the basic structure of your project. This includes creating a title page, abstract, introduction, method section, results, discussion, and references.

Also, think about the potential negative impacts of your chosen topic. For instance, if you explore how social anxiety impacts academic performance, consider the ethical implications of your research and how you’ll ensure the privacy and well-being of your participants.

Definition and How to Choose a Great Topic for Capstone Project

First, let’s start by explaining what is a capstone project. By definition, it is a culminating and integrative academic experience that students undertake typically in their final year of study. It is designed to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and competencies gained throughout a program of study. Capstone projects vary across disciplines and institutions, but they generally require students to apply what they have learned to address a real-world problem, conduct original research, or create a significant project.

capstone project

Here are key components and steps to consider when choosing a great capstone project topic:

Relevance to Your Field of Study:

Choose a topic that aligns with your major or specialization. The capstone project should showcase your expertise and knowledge in your chosen field.

Personal Interest:

Select a topic that genuinely interests you. Your enthusiasm for the subject will sustain your motivation throughout the project, making the experience more rewarding.

Real-World Application:

Consider topics that have practical implications in the real world. This could involve addressing a problem, proposing a solution, or conducting research that has the potential to make a meaningful impact.

Identify a Gap or Problem:

Look for areas in your field where there might be gaps in knowledge or existing problems that need solutions. Your capstone project can contribute to filling these gaps or solving identified problems.

Feasibility:

Assess the feasibility of your project. Consider the resources, time, and access to data or materials that you will need. A feasible project is one that you can realistically complete within the given time frame and with the available resources.

Faculty Expertise:

Check if there are faculty members with expertise in your chosen area of interest. Having a mentor who is knowledgeable about your topic can provide valuable guidance and support.

Interdisciplinary Approach:

Explore the possibility of integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines if it enhances the depth and breadth of your project. Interdisciplinary projects can be particularly innovative and impactful.

Current Trends and Issues:

Stay updated on current trends, issues, and debates in your field. Choosing a topic that is relevant to contemporary discussions can make your project more engaging and meaningful.

Project Scope:

Define the scope of your project clearly. A well-defined and focused project is more likely to be successful than one that is too broad or vague.

Consult with Advisors:

Seek advice from your academic advisors or mentors. They can provide valuable insights, help you refine your ideas, and ensure that your project meets the academic standards of your institution.

Remember, the capstone project is not only a demonstration of your academic abilities but also an opportunity to explore, innovate, and contribute to your field of study. What is a Capstone?

Capstones are final courses that draw upon your entire ALM scholarly training to produce a faculty- or student-directed academic research project worthy of a Harvard degree.

Student-directed capstones require you to come up with a topic and make a case to your research advisor as to why the topic is worthy of investigation. The project represents your academic passion and professional interest. Once the topic is approved, you craft a capstone proposal--a research plan--where you outline the topic, share the background reading you've done to understand the topic, and state the research design and methods.

Faculty-directed capstones are semester-long academic seminars lead by an instructor, who brings together all the key learning outcomes of the field of study in a structured syllabus. The instructor may present a list of topics from which you can choose or you may work on the same project as other students. You could work in a team or on your own.

Prework. Most capstones require you to participate in either a noncredit capstone proposal tutorial or a 4-credit, graded precapstone course the semester right before capstone registration (no earlier). The guided prework in either the tutorial or course sets the foundation for academically strong capstones.

The following ALM fields require student-directed capstones:

  • Digital Media Design
  • Global Development Practice
  • Journalism  *
  • Museum Studies
  • Sustainability

* All fields require the Capstone Proposal Tutorial, except Journalism.

The following ALM fields require faculty-directed capstones:

  • Anthropology
  • Biotechnology
  • Creative Writing and Literature
  • Data Science
  • Government
  • International Relations
  • Math for Teaching
  • Information Management Systems
  • Software Engineering

How do I choose between a thesis and a capstone?

Some programs have the option to pursue either the thesis or capstone track., a thesis is the more appropriate choice if:.

  • You want to earn a PhD or other advanced degree later on
  • You want the experience of writing for a publication
  • You want to work individually with a Research Advisor and Thesis Director
  • You are more self-directed, are good at managing projects with little supervision, and have a clear direction for your work
  • You have a project that requires more time (9-12 months) to pursue than can be done in a single class

The Capstone route is the more appropriate choice if:

  • You want to focus on a smaller-scale project that highlights your technical skills to a current or future employer
  • You want to work with a client or supervisor on a real-world project that can address a pressing business need
  • You want more input on your project from fellow students and other instructors;  you prefer to work in a community instead of alone
  • You want more structure to your project, including more internal milestones and due dates
