Hey everyone! I'm applying for the Bryan Cameron Scholarship this year, but I'm kinda stuck on the essay prompts. Could somebody maybe give me some pointers on how to tackle them or even share their own essays? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! It's great that you're applying for the Bryan Cameron Scholarship. While I cannot share specific essays, I can definitely offer you some general advice and guidance for tackling the essay prompts.

First, familiarize yourself with the values and principles that the scholarship emphasizes: leadership, community involvement, academic achievement, and sports. Make sure your essays reflect your connection to these values.

Next, let's talk about some strategies for the different types of essay prompts you might encounter:

1. Personal Statement

This is usually an opportunity to showcase your background, values, and life experiences. Tell a compelling story that highlights your growth, passion, and character. Don't simply list your accomplishments; focus on one or two experiences that made a significant impact on your personal development.

2. Leadership Experience

Describe a specific experience that demonstrates your leadership skills, whether it was in school, sports, community service, or any other area. Share the challenge you faced and how you addressed it, as well as your learnings and the impact of your actions.

3. Community Involvement

Explain how you've contributed to your community, and why it's important to you. Highlight a project or initiative you were involved in and the impact it had on others. Show the significance of the experience and how it shaped you.

4. Academic Achievement / Goals

Discuss your past academic achievements and how they relate to your future goals. Mention what motivated you to choose your intended major/career path, and how your experiences have prepared you for success in college and beyond.

5. Sports Involvement

Share a meaningful experience related to sports, whether it's playing on a team or learning valuable lessons from sports. Explain the specific impact sports have had on your personal development, leadership skills, and values.

- Be honest, authentic, and introspective.

- Avoid cliches and generic statements.

- Stay focused and have a clear, coherent structure.

- Edit and revise your essays to ensure clarity and conciseness.

As you work on your essays, keep in mind that the scholarship committee is looking for applicants who demonstrate strong leadership, community involvement, and academic excellence. Good luck with your application!

Cameron Impact Scholarship for Class of 2023

The application for the Cameron Impact Scholarship (run by the Bryan Cameron Education Foundation) opened for the high school class of 2023 on Feb 1. It’s a four-year full-ride awarded to “10-15 exceptional high school students” each year. I’m opening this thread for applying juniors like me to discuss the scholarship – and maybe for past applicants/winners to offer advice?

How important, or critical, is community service / volunteer for this scholarship? What type of work were done by previous winners?

You can find information about previous recipients on scholars tab on the website. I believe once you start the application, there is more information about what the previous recipients did.

I made an applicant account and don’t see any additional information about past winners. I could’ve sworn there was a bio for each scholar when I looked with no account several months ago… I’ve heard that Cameron Impact Scholars tend to have extremely impressive community service achievements, though, which isn’t a surprise considering that 10 or 15 are selected from a pool of 3,000.

I’d imagine things on the scale of high-level and ongoing volunteer work, fundraising large amounts of money, beginning or substantially contributing to some sort of effort/initiative with impact at or beyond the community level, et cetera. The eligibility statement just says applicants must “Show proven excellence in extracurricular activities, be motivated leaders with a strong work ethic, [and] demonstrate active participation in community service and/or civic minded arenas” in addition to the other more quantitative criteria.

From what I remember, these kids made a significant impact in their community. They weren’t passive participants but were movers and shakers. They identified a problem and they figured out a way to solved it. Their impact was significant.

I know the Class of 2022 Recipients were just posted but the bios were taken out. Were any of you able to find outside information on the recipients’ ECs?

Wayback Machine to the rescue – I found an archived version of the page for the Class of 2021, with bios included .

I wonder if they took the bios down because they don’t want people to self-select (self-deselect, rather) and not even apply because of how impressive past winners have been. That might suggest that they’re looking for more variety, which wouldn’t be a surprise given the clear equity-and-inclusion emphasis on the website. In any case, I figure my chance of succeeding if I apply is much better than my chance if I don’t, in which case I obviously won’t be selected. I’d give that same advice to anyone reading this: why not give it a try and see what happens?

Good luck to everyone applying to this, I applied last year in the early round but was rejected. Thought I had comparable stats to those who had received it based on the bios. I know some people who had CRAZY profiles (legit nonprofits/educational initiatives adopted in several schools across the country, ivy-level awards and extracurriculars, leadership on the national level, etc) and they were flat out rejected. I looked at the Class of 2022 bios before they took them down, and it seems like there is a wide variety of people picked. Obviously you cannot tell everything from what you just see online, but there were a couple people that had normal extracurriculars and then one somewhat impactful passion project. Nothing insane, and if they posted a chance me on here for an ivy league school I can almost guarantee they would have been told no chance.

I think what they are looking for is passion, and they can tell that some of the extracurriculars are engineered/insincere. The passion projects I saw, the winners had personal connections in some way and it seemed a lot more genuine and humble…if that makes sense.

I would also suggest taking a ton of time on your essays and doing the regular round (do they still have 2 rounds? Last year there was early and then regular) if your essays aren’t up to par. I don’t think it really makes that much of a difference applying early vs not in terms of selection. From writing a ton of college essays this cycle, my writing has improved dramatically. I went back and looked at my Cameron essays and they were alright, but nothing special by any means. A lot of my current college essays are a lot better and actually reflect my personality! If I had to do it all over again I would have applied regular. It also gives you more time for achievements/awards…I had a national award I received in July and they never got a chance to see it because they sent out the finalist/rejection emails the last week of June!

I do think there is some merit to the community service idea––that they try and pick people that have done a lot of community service. Some of the winners in their bios seemed to have passion projects/initiatives that were more service oriented, which goes in line with what I said earlier about being genuine. The ones with the people I know who applied just seemed like they were trying to quantify everything too much, and their nonprofits/initiatives were not really “helping” other people. They were impactful in a way, but not from a service perspective if that makes sense.

Just my two cents.

I spoke to one of the 2022 winners and they mentioned that some of this year’s Scholars had a lot more ECs/awards than their bios might suggest, since they were told to shorten their personal descriptions (ostensibly to avoid scaring off potential applicants). They also said that the majority of the 2022 recipients had already been early admitted to top institutions like Harvard, Stanford, etc. (it is almost astonishing how predictive this scholarship is for HYPSM admissions) so there is no doubt that they are all supremely qualified. Of course, even though some of the recipients are especially impressive, I’m sure a few distinguished themselves mainly via essays/LORs or the finalist interview. I scanned the list of finalists as well, and as everyone on this thread has mentioned there are some RSI kids and Harvard/Stanford early admits I recognized on there who did not end up being picked for the scholarship. I think what they look for is one massive passion project corroborated by recommenders, and the winners generally seemed to have published research, media recognition, and/or national/international awards. None of them are really underwhelming by any means if you Google their names and look more closely at what they’ve done. Of course I don’t know too much about this process or the exact criteria but you should make sure your essays reflect your personality well and that you think carefully about who you request your LORs from!

Also one more thing I do want to add: stats really don’t matter too much for this scholarship. Though you may definitely be ruled out if your numbers are questionably low, a 4.0 and 1600 won’t get you very far, it seems (and I see multiple people on the list of unsuccessful finalists who I know have perfect grades/scores). You probably need a 3.9+ UW and 1500+ to be competitive and the rest boils down to your ECs, personal qualities, and essays. The entire focus of the scholarship is impact, so your academic performance only serves to shield you from immediate disqualification. They also try to pick a few winners from underrepresented regions so you may get a slight boost if you live in a state without too many applicants. None of this is confirmed as I’m not on the selection committee but based on my observations it seems to hold up.

I have a child who is a past winner. I think what you are saying is spot on and excellent advice.

AMAZING! It looks like a fabulous opportunity - not just financially but from a support network as well. I just submitted my application and am crossing my fingers!!

For anyone following along, the Early Application deadline is in just over a month – May 20 at noon PT! Still working on my application. I need to start asking for letters of rec if I’m gonna make the early deadline…

Now just under two weeks until the early deadline! Anyone else aiming to get their app in by then?

I submitted mine! good luck!!

Just got mine in – 12 hours and change 'til the early deadline!

Did you guys get receipts of submitting?

Nope. The website FAQ seems to suggest that there aren’t receipts for application submissions – it says applicants “are welcome to verify with our admin at [email protected] ” but that might take a while since I’m sure they’re swamped with emails. (Worth noting also that application updates can be sent to that same address and will be added to your file if you’re still in the running.)

good luck! I hope we are all still in the running!!

I just got a receipt the other day.

Applicants must demonstrate not only outstanding academics but also exceptional involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership roles.

  • We award 75-100 Finalist Interviews each year. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed in two pools - early and regular.  The Interview slots filled in the Early Application Round determine the number of Interview slots that we have available for Regular Round Applicants; and
  • Statistically the odds of receiving a finalist interview are typically higher in the Early Pool than the Regular Pool.

What does the Cameron Impact Scholarship cover?

The Cameron Impact Scholarship is intended to cover the full tuition and ‘qualified educational expenses’ (as defined by the Internal Revenue Service) at the recipient’s chosen collegiate institution. ‘Educational expenses’ vary amongst higher institutions, but the Scholarship is intended to cover tuition, fees, and books. The Cameron Impact Scholarship does not cover Room and Board.

How many scholarships are awarded each year?

10-15 Cameron Impact Scholarships are awarded each year.

Will I be notified of my status even if I am not selected for an interview?

What if i am planning to do a gap year between high school and college.

Applicants who wish to take a Gap Year are welcome to apply to the Cameron Impact Scholarship. We do, however, request that you apply with the graduating high school class that you would be attending your first year of college with. So if you were to take a gap year, apply by May or September of your Gap Year. We also find that it is additive to the Application if you describe what you have done with your Gap Year.

May I submit my transcript or recommendations after the deadline?

Our deadlines are hard ones, and any incomplete Applications will NOT be reviewed. We do not accept any late Transcripts or Recommendations. If any information is missing for the Early Application Deadline - your submission will automatically roll to the Regular Applicant Pool.

Is the scholarship need-based?

The Cameron Impact Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship. It is open to all applicants who meet the GPA and citizenship requirements, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation or any other background factors.  Integrity, intelligence, motivation, work ethic, and willingness to serve others are the strongest indicators of a worthy educational investment.   We will never ask you any personal or familial financial information. Financial need is not taken into consideration in our evaluation process.

If I am not awarded the Cameron Impact Scholarship, are there other merit-based programs that I should explore?

There are! While we are honored to award a significant number of merit-based scholarships each year, we recognize that there are many deserving candidates out there whom we are not able recognize through our program alone.

While we do not claim to have an exhaustive list of all merit-based opportunities, we are making an effort to familiarize ourselves with other programs that are worth pursuing. Please see the “Other Resources” page on our site.

Can I save my application and come back to edit it later?

NO . Unfortunately, our system does not allow you to save an application and return to edit it at a later time. In an effort to prevent loss of information, we always recommend that you save responses in Word or a similar program until you are ready to submit your Application.

My school does not use a 4.0 scale – how do I calculate my GPA?

The Cameron Impact Scholarship requires a minimum unweighted GPA of a 3.7 or higher. If your school does not calculate on a 4.0 scale - you may convert your GPA according to the following scale:

Are there word limits to the essay prompts?

YES. All word limits are clearly noted in the Application. The Selection Committee will not review a response beyond the allowable word limits.

  • One must be from someone who has made a significant impact on your life. (This may be a school affiliated personnel if they fit under the 'impactful' umbrella for you. Please do not include a recommendation from a parent or legal guardian).

May I submit more than two Recommendations?

NO . If we receive more than two recommendations, we will only review the first two in the order that they are received.

Can my Recommendation writers submit the Recommendations directly to the Foundation?

I forgot to submit my transcript and/or recommendations with my application. what should i do now, i am receiving an error message when i try to submit my application. what do i do.

If you receive any error messages- please make sure you have all of your information saved in Word or a similar program to prevent loss of data. Error messages are most commonly due to an embedded cookies issue on your web browser. The easiest solution is to try an alternative browser altogether (if you were using Safari, try Chrome, etc). Another solution would be to disable cookies and clear your history.

This is a very common issue for applicants who are using school computers.

***IMPORTANT: Applicants are strongly advised to submit their application well in advance of the final deadline. The Foundation assumes no responsibility for an applicant’s technical submission issues encountered on the final due date.

I have an update I would like to share with the Foundation – may I update my application?

Did my application go through, my reference was unable to provide a recommendation by the deadline- what should i do.

We do not offer any extensions. Please remember to give your References plenty of time to complete a Recommendation.

Keep on reading to learn more about how you can nail the very first sentence and start your essay off right!

Engage the reader with the first sentence

No matter what type of essay you are writing, you will want to ensure that the very first line grabs the attention of the reader. One of the biggest mistakes that students make when starting their essay is simply restating the prompt. This is bland and boring.

Now, you might be wondering, “how do I engage the reader with the very first line of my essay?”. The good news is that there are several ways that you can do this that are very simple to do.

Put the reader in your shoes.

Alternatively, you can choose to start your essay by placing the reader right in your shoes and show them something from your life. Appeal to the senses and show the reader what you see, hear, smell, or taste. These specific details will help your essay come to life and make it even more memorable.

Scholarship essay introduction example

Next,  we’ll look at a specific example of how you can open up your essay. Let’s say you are applying for the Questbridge scholarship program . One of the essays that you will be asked is:

We are interested in learning more about you and the context in which you have grown up, formed your aspirations, and accomplished your academic successes. Please describe the factors and challenges that have most influenced you. How are they shaping your future aspirations?

You might be tempted to rephrase the question and start your essay with something like:

“I have grown up in a rural context and this has formed my aspirations and allowed me to accomplish academic success…”

This is generic and will not engage your reader at all.

Instead, what if you started off your essay with something like this:

“I look outside my bedroom window and see Henry, my favorite chicken, pecking at something in the dirt.”

Makes a big difference, right? As a reader, you are probably wondering: why does this person have chickens outside their bedroom window? Why did they name this particular chicken Henry?

Keep the ending of your essay in mind as you write the opening

While crafting your opening, be open to ideas about how to close your essay. There is no need to stress about the ending now, but being mindful of effective ways to end an essay is always a good idea. Say you are opening your scholarship essay with Henry the chicken. Is there a way for Henry to make an impactful appearance at the end of the essay to close things out in a way that perfectly wraps everything up? The key is for the essay ending to be meaningful and memorable for the reader.

There is always the option of going back and crafting an engaging opening after your essay is written. Simply write your main idea where the first paragraph would be to guide you as you write. After, go back when your creative juices are flowing, and craft the amazing opening (and closing) that your scholarship essay deserves!

Final thoughts

As shown, there are many questions that we as readers will have after reading an engaging essay opening such as the one just shared; We want to learn more about the student who is writing this essay. After all, as a writer trying to stand out in a pile of essays, that is our main goal.

We hope that you have a better understanding of how to start a scholarship essay so you can maximize your chances of winning scholarships!
