  • Specifics to you. When and if you do contact these companies, and you are in a niche industry (or a common one), you can ask specifically what they have done in the past to help someone with a similar background as yours. If, as an example, you're in the technology industry, you may find a company with a resume writer who has a great track record of finding employment for upper-level executives in that industry.

When starting from scratch, you'll go section by section, entering your education, employment history, hobbies and interests, professional skills, languages and references. Resume.com provides question prompts and tips for guidance, as well as career-specific examples you can add if you're struggling to find the right words. You can also choose to forgo any of these sections, rearrange sections and add custom ones depending on what you need. As you update and save each section, you can see how it will appear on the page on your resume preview to the right. You can also change the template, font style and size, or spacing at any time and see it update in real-time in the preview. 

Once you're done, you can download your new resume (in PDF, DocX, RTF or TXT format), create a custom URL or print it out. Resume genius.

The website Resume Genius says you can "make a professional resume in 12 minutes." We tested it out and indeed had a solid first draft of an easy resume completed in about 10 minutes. Resume Genius takes you step-by-step through the process, prompting you with questions about your education and work experience to help you fill out the applicable sections. Resume Genius is particularly helpful because you can search for a job and see prewritten text for the description that you can add or edit. When finished, you can easily toggle between different templates to see what looks best for the final product. You also have the option to directly share your resume with Indeed or Resume Library. 

The site can also help you build cover letters and curriculum vitae. After you input all your information, you can choose different layout styles and colors. It's easy to move through, but you have to do it in order and fill in all the information before continuing. Resume Genius also offers examples of resumes, CVs and cover letters for specific jobs, as well as recommended jobs near you. You can download the resume you create for $3 (which starts a 14-day trial for Resume Genius Pro), or $8 (which kicks off a monthly subscription plan). However, if you fail to cancel your trial before the 14 days are up, you'll be billed $25 every four weeks ($95 annually), according to the site. 

On Trustpilot at the time of this publication, the site has 4.8 out of 5 stars based on more than 38,000 reviews. Note that if you register on the site, Resume Genius does collect personally identifiable information and may share it with third parties for advertising and other purposes, according to its privacy policy. The account deletion process is buried in the Terms of Service . According to Resume Genius, complete data erasure can take up to 30 days, but they may retain "certain information in accordance with privacy laws."

Nancy, I wanted to let you know that I was selected for USDA SES CDP. There were over 650 applicants and in the end USDA selected 78 participants for the SES CDP. There will be 4 cohorts of 19/20 members and I’m in the first cohort. We were notified in late July and orientation for the first cohort was August 3 and 4. Our first class at American University starts tomorrow. There will be a total of 8 week long courses over the next 11 months. I will be done with this coursework on June 22nd. From rejected ECQs to SES: I was very pleased with your service. The ECQs I initially submitted were rejected by OPM. I contacted your company since I only had one more opportunity with OPM. My writer Lee did a good job enhancing my ECQs to meet OPM’s standards. He provided candid feedback as he worked to improve my written narratives. Bottom line: although not accepted for the first position I applied for with the ECQs and TQs CareerPro drafted, I was interviewed and accepted for the second position–and the ECQs and TQs sailed through OPM with no edits/questions at all (something the hiring director for my office said she had not seen in her 10 years there). I have now started my new position. While I consider myself a reasonably good writer, the ECQ’s and TQ’s I produced on my own were simply not good enough. If you’ll allow me to shift gears for a minute, I’d like to tell you what this means to me.

I’m told by some that transition is supposed to be a joyful time: they’re wrong.  It’s terrifying, confusing, and painful.  I’m a firm believer in defining the moments in my life, but I cannot deny that Master Sergeant H—-, United States Air Force defines me.  Just contemplating laying aside the uniform taps a well of emotion that is indescribable.  For so long that it seems like forever, the mantle ‘Airman’ has informed my thoughts, my actions, my speech, and my being.  Therein lies the rub.

When I look at all my [evaluations] and whatnot, I just can’t think, ‘let’s translate these experiences into KSAs’.  When I look at those documents I think about laughter and tears, friends found and friends lost, good times and the suck.  I know there’s some skills in there, there has to be, but right now, all it is to me is visions of dear friends, family really, and a life.  That’s not particularly helpful in writing a resume.

So, thank you for doing such a great job of translating all of the gibberish into something useful for an organization.  I couldn’t have done this.  I think this will open many doors for me.

Barbara, I am presently in the running for two targeted positions and should hear this week after two interviews.
