Duolingo Lesson Plan

This Duolingo lesson plan is designed to help educators implement the digital tool into their instruction

Learning languages in schools comes in many different forms. In pre-kindergarten and elementary classes, there are often translated words at centers around the room. In middle and high school, students often have the opportunity to choose a language as an elective. Bilingual schools and classrooms also integrate foreign languages into daily instruction. 

Regardless of the format in which language is being introduced, Duolingo offers an exciting technology-based platform for students to improve their foreign language skills. Thanks to the game-based format of Duolingo, students will be encouraged to continue to use the app.

This sample lesson plan is focused on using Duolingo to support students' development of their foreign language skills.

Learning Objective : At the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 

• Identify at least 10 vocabulary words in a foreign language 
• Speak at least 3 conversational phrases 

Setting Up Duolingo For The Class

Create an introduction to Duolingo with Google Slides and screenshots so students can get a sense of how you want them to engage with the app. With the free teacher account, you can set up a class for your students and all of their interactions within Duolingo will be connected. 

Once you have set-up a classroom and added your students, create an assignment, which is an easy automated process in the Duolingo teacher site. The assignments are a combination of the interactive activities within the app, such as listening to stories, practicing conversational phrases, and matching what is heard to what is written. You must also choose how long you want students to engage in the app, which will dictate how long each unit takes to complete. 

Add the link to your class Duolingo to your LMS, and your students can quickly go into the assignment. Students will be prompted in English first, then can move through the different language learning activities. 

Be sure that students have headphones so they do not get distracted with other students’ engagement with Duolingo. If you choose to have students repeat words and phrases, try to space them out in the classroom as much as possible. 

You will also be able to monitor student progress and see what areas they need more support in through the analytics through reports that Duolingo provides.

Connecting to Other Lessons 

Instead of having students go through random modules to improve their foreign language speaking and listening skills, you may want to connect the lesson to other lessons students are engaged with. For example, with a Google Earth Social Studies lesson focused on landforms, students can choose a language that is connected to the country where the landform was located to learn related vocabulary.  Or with a Storybird Writing lesson focused on fictional storytelling, students can try to use learned foreign language conversational sentences within the story.  

Duolingo Support for Teachers? 

Duolingo offers a wide range of support for teachers as you incorporate the use of the app into your lessons, including activity templates, a guidebook, and a robust help center. 

If you would like to connect with other teachers for peer support, there is a Duolingo Educators Facebook group, for which the link is available on the Duolingo site. 

What if Students Are On Different Ability Levels? 

The great thing about Duolingo is that the content is offered at the introductory, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. 

If you have students who need more time with the concepts, have them repeat modules before moving on to more difficult ones. For students whose language skills are more developed, encourage them to move on to more advanced modules. Also, because you will set-up the lesson by time, a student who is more advanced can easily move on to other concepts while students who need more time work on their items.  

Duolingo is a fun learning tool that can be used for students to start or build their language experiences. Give it a try and see how your students’ develop their language skills.

6 easy ways to incorporate Duolingo into your classroom

It’s no question that teaching is hard, and great teachers are irreplaceable. That’s why every feature and update that we launch at Duolingo for Schools is meant to make educators’ lives easier, and students’ learning more fun and effective. Here are some easy ways to get started with using Duolingo in the classroom. Teachers: make sure to add your students to a classroom at schools.duolingo.com so that you can create assignments and follow along with their progress!

Assign a game as homework: Instead of printing out worksheets and exercises, assign specific Skills that align with your curriculum for students to practice on Duolingo (we’ll handle the grading!). For an added challenge, and to personalize student learning, set an XP goal for them to meet by practicing with any activity they choose. Our research shows that Duolingo is an effective way to gain proficiency in a new language, and we have a wealth of teaching and learning experts dedicated to creating and improving our courses!

Turn XP into extra credit: Our experience points, or XP, make it fun to set up class-wide competitions or challenge individual students. Use XP assignments as extra credit to reward students for practicing language learning on their own time, or give extra points to individuals or teams that win time-based XP challenges.

Warm up cool down with bellringers: Those first five minutes of class can always feel a bit chaotic—and those last five can carry an angsty “watching the clock” energy. Use Duolingo at the beginning or end of class by setting a specific goal for students to complete during these times. This will help everyone settle in, or out, with some fun learning activities!

Gather the groups: Does your class thrive on collaborative exercises, or on competition? Students can race against the clock to see who can get the most XP, or divide into teams for some friendly competition. Get ideas for activities from our Pinterest and Teachers Pay Teachers pages, or by joining our Educator Community on Facebook .

Call for reinforcement: Don’t have time to go back and review everything you’ve taught, or even just the material that you know your students need to revisit? We’ve been there. Use Duolingo to assign specific Skills that students need to practice that aren’t part of your regularly scheduled program.

Reward with learning: Duolingo’s gamefied interface makes learning exciting and fun. It can actually function as a reward to allow students who have completed their in-class assignments or other work to “play” Duolingo! Offer “Duolingo time” as a reward when you have students who have earned it!

Using duolingo french in your classes.

If you haven’t yet tried out Duolingo French, you might want to take a look. I’ve been using it this year with my classes and I’ve found it to be a useful addition to our weekly routine. It’s easy to use and your students will enjoy the gamified aspects of learning – some of my students who won’t do any other assignments will participate in the Duolingo ones.

How to use Duolingo French

You will need to visit the schools version of Duolingo to set up your classes. You’ll choose the language and give each class a name. To add your students, you can send them the link and they can join Duolingo, or if they already have it they can join your class by clicking on the link and logging in with their existing account. This works on both mobile devices and computers.

Once they’ve joined your class, they’ll be asked whether they are starting from scratch or if they’ve already studied some French. Obviously with level 1, they will start from scratch. You can allow them to test into the appropriate unit, but beware that some students are good at guessing or will use an online translator – and this will place them into a much more advanced level than they are ready for. This can make it frustrating once they start doing the lessons, so maybe mention to them that they will only be causing trouble for themselves by doing this.

You can now assign activities to your students. With the new Duolingo French path, you can’t assign specific lessons or skills. They hope to have that function working in January 2024. Until then, you can just assign an XP goal. I assign 50 points per week. Since each Duolingo French lesson earns between 10-15 points, they need to do only one lesson per day to meet that goal. If they do well on a lesson, they can get bonus points, so they might only need to do four lessons each week instead of five.

I find that the gamification in Duolingo gets some of my students involved who otherwise wouldn’t be. They get instant feedback, and they can see their progress as they move through each lesson and the path. There is a variety of activities – speaking, reading, listening and writing. You can make a leaderboard for your classes – Duolingo displays one for each class within the teacher dashboard – to encourage them to earn points.

What else does Duolingo French offer besides the lessons?

In the past, you had to look for the little stories in order to do them. Now, the stories are built into the path. This means that as students do the lessons, the stories will pop up as part of their regular assignments. The stories are cute, short stories that are based on the vocabulary and structures learned in the lessons. They include questions, so students will need to pay attention to the sentences they are reading for both comprehension AND the structure of the language.

At some times, Duolingo offers a classroom quest. Your students can work together as a class to win prizes. A target number of points is set and the points earned each week go towards a classroom swag pack or other prizes.

Another good thing about using Duolingo in schools is that once your students have a schools account (meaning that they’ve joined a teacher’s class), they will have unlimited hearts – no more running out of chances to pass a level! This will carry over to any language they study, so if you have students learning another language, they will also be able to use it for languages other than Duolingo French.

Duolingo French podcasts – a great resource for intermediates

If your students are in level 2 or higher, I suggest trying out the Duolingo French podcasts . These are an amazing resource, and every episode is quite interesting. They are a combination of English and French – the narrator speaking English and the guest subject speaking French. The level is intermediate, and with the narrator helping to restate tricky sections in English your students won’t get lost. There are more than 80 episodes at this point on a variety of topics.

The podcasts feature guests from all over the French-speaking world, so your students can have the chance to hear a variety of accents. Some of them are about culture, others are about regular people doing interesting things. Each episode stands on its own, except for season 8. Season 8 is a 6-part series that should be listened to in order.

If you’d like to try the Duolingo French podcast and take it further with your students, or supply them with more scaffolding, I have a series of activities to accompany season 11, the current season. Each lesson has pre-listening activities to prepare students with the vocabulary they will need and post-listening activities to check for comprehension and practice the vocabulary.
