Job Search in Denmark Part 3: Your Danish cover letter, plus LinkedIn, plus two magic words

In the era of online applications, face-to-face networking, and LinkedIn profiles, the Danish cover letter is a bit of a lost art.

Probably your future employer will ‘meet’ you via one of these other channels before they ever read the letter that is supposedly introducing you.

But it’s still worth writing, because it’s a chance to set the experience on your cv in the context of the job on offer.

For example, I met a woman who had spent her entire career in the telecom industry – and really wanted to try something else. Although her cv showed one telecom job after another, her cover letter was a great place to explain why she was applying for a job in a different industry and how her experience could be useful there.

A good cover letter is particularly useful if you’re a new arrival in Denmark, a new graduate, or going for a job that isn’t an obvious fit with what you’ve already done.

Keep it short Your letter should be short , direct, and with no mistakes in grammar and spelling. Even if your future job is not in the communications industry, a flawless cover letter gives you a chance to show you care about thoroughness and care about quality, both of which are points of pride in Denmark. (I recommend fiverr.com , where native speakers will proofread your English or Danish for as little as US$5)

Three short paragraphs should be enough to describe who you are and why you want this particular job with this particular company.

If you’re newly arrived in Denmark, you can also use your cover letter to explain why you chose this place over others. Danes love their country and are proud of it; it certainly won’t hurt to show that you like it too, and are not just an opportunist who will take a job anywhere if it offers a good paycheck.

The traditional Danish letter style dispenses with annoying salutations like “Dear Sirs/Madams”. Instead, it has a subject line on top, a bit like an email. You can use this to your advantage. A line like Skilled juggler with 2 decades of experience in circus acrobatics is certainly a more eye-catching start to a letter than the old-fashioned “To Whom it May Concern.”

But first… Let’s scroll back for a minute, though. As I said, the cover letter is probably not your first encounter with an employer.

Many Danish job ads contain the phone number of the hiring manager, who is often the exact person you will be working for if you get the job.

This is an opportunity for you to call, introduce yourself, and ask an intelligent question about the job. (Yeah, an intelligent question – nothing that’s already in the job description or something you can find out on the company’s website.)

Please, please find a quiet room where your future employer can hear what you are saying – I have had people call me from train stations with trains whizzing by, or from coffee shops with Beyoncé’s latest hit pumping in the background.

Approach the hiring manager along these lines: “This is (your name here). I understand that you’re the hiring manager for the (job name), and I’m interested, but I have a couple of questions. Is now a good time?”

Assuming the hiring manager is not halfway through her lunch or on her a way to a meeting, you can then take 5-10 minutes of her time with a few questions that are directly relevant to the position, such as the team structure, travel requirements or management responsibilities.

Please ask about things that relate to the work at hand, not whether you can get off early on Fridays because you play tennis or if its OK that you already have vacation planned for the company’s busiest season.

If the answers (and the boss) are to your liking, you can reference the conversation in the first paragraph of your cover letter. Just to make sure the contact is fresh in her memory, I recommend sending your application within 24 hours of having spoken to the hiring manager.

But even before that… Before your cover letter, and before you approach a hiring manager, you should have your LinkedIn profile in order. When it comes to social media, Danes use Facebook mostly for social purposes and are indifferent about Twitter, but they love LinkedIn.

Anyone who is serious about doing business and finding a job in Denmark should polish his or her LinkedIn profile like a diamond.

An excellent business profile photo, as we discussed in Job Hunting in Denmark Part 2: Putting together your Danish cv is a must. Your job title should be packed full of the kind of search words recruiters will type in when they’re looking for someone like you – the more specific, the better.

(I get so mad when I see someone just write “Engineer.” No, you’re an Environmental Engineer specializing in Wastewater Purification .)

When it comes to the jobs you’ve had, don’t just list your title and dates of employment. Go into details about the projects you’ve worked on and the products, materials and teams you’ve worked with. Tell a little story about your time on the job and what you learned there. Unlike a cv, LinkedIn profiles don’t have to be a dry collection of bullet points.

LinkedIn even has a great ‘portfolio’ feature to put up documentation of some of the work you’ve already done – photos, newspaper articles, videos, short project summaries, whatever you’ve got.

It helps make your work experience come alive and seem more concrete, particularly if most of it consists of work done outside of Denmark.

Writing updates helps establish your name LinkedIn also allows you to post short Facebook-style updates, which you can use to share information about what’s going on in your field.

These posts put your name in the news feeds of all the great new industry contacts you built up during Looking for jobs in Denmark Part 1: Fine-tuning your approach to the Danish job market . They keep your name fresh in their minds so they remember you when a job needs to be filled. If you’re a gifted writer, you can even do longer LinkedIn blog post about some topic of interest in your business. This helps establish you as a local ‘expert.’

There’s a good chance your future employer will find you via your LinkedIn profile. Even if he doesn’t, he’ll probably look at your profile after he reviews your cv and cover letter.

A great profile could prompt him to call you for a meeting, which is what we’ll discuss in our posting on The Danish Job Interview .

Two magic words When I give presentations to job-hunters in Denmark , I tell them there are two words you can add to your cover letter that will virtually guarantee that it will be carefully read.

What are those two words?

The name of someone you know who already works at the company.

Of course, you should only use a current employee’s name with his or her permission, and ask each time you use it. There’s always the chance that your contact and this particular hiring manager may be bitter enemies, or that a company is so vast (say, Novo Nordisk) that a recommendation from a scientist won’t have much impact on the hiring of an accountant.

But if your contact is the same or a similar department, knows the company’s culture and priorities, and thinks you’re a good fit, the hiring manager will at least take the time to look through your application and see if she agrees.

At the very least, she’ll feel she might have to explain to her co-worker why she doesn’t agree. Denmark is a little job market, so people are careful not to offend their business contacts.

That means your letter and cv will get a little extra attention.

No more than one page long, your cover letter should outline why you are the right person for the position. Rather than simply listing your CV merits, try to make connections between what the company asks for in the job listing and your own skills and experience. This is your chance to show the employer why you are the best person for the job. The primary purpose of your job application is to make the employer want to meet you for a job interview. A cover letter is often just as important as a CV in Denmark when you apply for a job. It is important to write a cover letter specifically tailored for each position you apply for. How to Write a Cover Letter

What do danish recruiters expect, when reading your application.

Recruiters look for the perfect match to their vacant job. It is your task to make sure that the recruiter understands how you match the requirements. We have gathered a few essential points from recruiters and hiring managers in Denmark that we will share with you.

How to Identify and Respond to Keywords in a Job Advertisement

The responsibilities and requirements or qualifications sections are usually the core of the job ad. Recruiters spend time identifying the main qualifications needed. They map out existing skills in the team to find out if one or more skills are lacking. A new employee could very likely bring missing skills to the company or the team. Therefore, recruiters spend time making sure that the job ad reveals what to expect from the job. The company wants to attract the right person with the right skills, - someone who will be happy in the job and hopefully stay in the company for a longer period of time. Recruiters communicate this to you by use of  keywords  in the job ad. Now it is your job to help the recruiter understand that you have the right qualifications, by doing the following:

• Identify the key requirements – the necessary skills – and respond to them carefully. You might want to list the requirements into two groups: hard and soft skills. Hard skills are teachable and measurable abilities that are easy to quantify such as your degree or certificate, machine operating or the ability to use computer programs. In Denmark, recruiters expect you to start with mentioning the hard skills. E.g. if you are an engineer, you will want to mention that as soon as possible. After you have mentioned the hard skills, you can focus on the soft skills. Soft skills are subjective skills that are hard to quantify. They are also known as people skills or interpersonal skills. Soft skills are the traits that mark who you are as a colleague or employee such as communication skills, team work ability or your role as a team leader. Please note: in your cover letter, recruiters expect you to not just mention the skills. Instead, you are meant to demonstrate that you possess a skill by sharing examples of when you used it. It is OK if you do not meet all of the qualifications listed in the job ad. If you meet just some of the qualifications, you can still apply for the job, provided that you can convince the reader that you match these completely. Ideally, you should demonstrate this by using specific examples from your previous work experience. It will be worth your while to mention and identify comparable or transferable skills or experiences. For example, if the job requires R programming skills, you can state that you are proficient in Python and by knowing this you will quickly be able to learn.
• Remember to include your motivation in your cover letter. Generally speaking, Danish employers believe that if you like your job and if you feel happy when at work, you will perform better. Try to think about these questions: • Why are you applying for this specific job? If you can state that you really like working with certain tasks, please do so. • Why do you think you are a good match to the job? • Why do you want to work for this particular company? Remember: Do not focus on what you can gain from being hired, but what the company can gain from hiring you . Try to put yourself in the shoes of the recruiter. Do you match the key elements of the job? Is it easy for the recruiter to see how you match the requirements? Have you explained your motivation for applying for the job? If you can answer yes to these three questions, you are well on your way.

Here Are Six Guidelines on How to Make Your Cover Letter Stand Out From The Crowd

• Explain what you have to offer: See things from the employer’s perspective. Focus on what you can offer. Let them know your competences, also the soft competences that are relevant for the job, and especially the ones, which may be more special in Denmark than in your home country (e.g. your language skills). Besides your professional competences, such as technical or economic skills, be sure to include your social competences, such as negotiation or teaching skills, and last but not least your personal competences which round up your profile. In Denmark, it is essential to show a complete picture of yourself: an employer will be interested not only in your diplomas, but also in your personality and your interests. In short: what drives and motivates you.
• Address the criteria in the job ad: Describe how you fulfil the criteria specified in the ad. Be specific when you translate your experiences and personal qualities to match the job criteria. If in doubt – simply answer the key words from the job ad.
• Include your motivation: Tell the employer why you are interested in the job, and be precise in explaining your motivation for wanting this job. Most employers believe that if you really like your job, you will perform better which benefits the company.
• Find a suitable style: Write your application in a style that matches the type of company you are addressing. For instance, your style will be more informal and creative when applying for a job at an advertising agency than a financial institution.
• Write with clarity and precision: Avoid long and complex sentences. Use shorter paragraphs and break up your application in sections. An application should be no longer than one A4 page.
• Avoid mistakes: Always check your application for language errors – particularly if you are not writing in your mother tongue. If possible, get another person to proofread your application carefully. Mistakes suggest sloppiness and no employer responds positively to that.

Once a popular Viking getaway, now an unforgettable tourist destination. Denmark is officially one of my top destinations! However, to experience its rich history, incredible culture, and picture-perfect towns, you might need a Denmark Schengen Visa.

Here's the catch:

Out of personal experience, I've learned that the visa application process is not as simple as other Schengen Visa applications. So, if you're planning to apply for your Denmark Schengen/Tourist Visa, I suggest you stick around.

In this post, I'll cover the Denmark Tourist Visa application, requirements, and potential problems you might run into.

Let's get right to it:

The Denmark Tourist Visa At First Glance

Before you can apply for your visa, there are a few things you need to consider. First, I'll briefly discuss key points about the Denmark Tourist Visa. Later, I'll cover the required documents and the exact steps you need to take when applying for the Denmark Tourist Visa.

What Is The Denmark Tourist Visa?

In more formal terms, the Denmark Tourist Visa is a travel authorization that allows you to visit the country for tourism purposes. So basically, you need this type of visa to visit Denmark for sightseeing, vacation, visiting relatives, etc. Other terms used for this type of visa include:

The Denmark Schengen Visa

The Short-Stay Visa

The Short Term Visa

The 90 Day Visa

Whatever you decide to call this visa, you should know that it only allows you to visit Denmark for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This is commonly known as the 90/180 Schengen Rule.

A benefit of the Denmark Tourist Visa is that you can visit other European Countries within the Schengen Area . These Schengen Countries include:

Austria , Belgium , Czech Republic , Denmark , Estonia, Finland, France , Germany , Greece , Hungary , Iceland , Italy , Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal , Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain , Sweden, and Switzerland .

I should mention that this type of Denmark Visa only allows tourism purposes. You will not be able to work or permanently live in Denmark.

Quick Note: You must include your travel plans in your application if you intend to visit the other Schengen States. Be sure to add a complete travel itinerary as well as a cover letter (which indicates your travel plans) alongside your application.

As I've come to learn, not all nationals need to apply for a Denmark Tourist/Schengen Visa when visiting the country. So before you start your application, you first need to determine if you need a visa to enter the country.

US Citizens:

If you're a US citizen, you don't need to apply for a Denmark Tourist Visa. Instead, you enjoy visa-free travel to Denmark and the neighboring Schengen States for up to 90 days within every 180 days.

US Green Card Holders:

In some cases, US Green Card Holders need to apply for a visa to enter Denmark. This all depends on your nationality. If your country of origin requires a visa to enter Denmark, you'll need to apply for the Denmark Tourist Visa. On the other hand, you don't need to apply for a visa if you enjoy visa-free travel.

Third-world Nationals (non-EU countries):

Not all countries outside Europe enjoy the benefit of visa-free travel. Therefore, if you live in such a country, you must apply for a visa to enter Denmark. Here is a list of countries that need a visa to enter Denmark.

Nationals from the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and the Schengen Area don't need to apply for a visa when visiting Denmark.

Once you've submitted your visa, the visa processing time is generally around 15 business days. However, it may take 30+ days for your visa to be processed in extreme cases. Reasons for a delayed processing time include:

Missing documents

An incomplete/unclear application form

A sudden pandemic

A demand for Denmark Schengen Visas

You can start your application as early as 6 months before your trip to Denmark. Personally, I recommend starting your application at least 2 months before traveling.

"Why"

To ensure that you have enough time to complete your visa application, wait for your visa to be processed, and correct any errors that may occur (like missing documents or an incomplete application).

For adults: €80 (EUR)

For children between the ages 6 - 12: €40 (EUR)

For children under 6 years: Free

Finding where you need to apply can be quite tedious. Generally, you need to apply at the Embassy of Denmark or the Danish Consulate. However, in most cases, you'll need to apply at an authorized Application Center that handles Danish visa services.

The easiest way around this is to apply through Atlys. Atlys already knows where you need to apply. Additionally, Atlys will schedule a visa appointment for you .

If you're unsure where you need to apply, you can find the correct Danish Embassy/Consulate here .

If you don't already know, you must meet certain financial requirements to visit Denmark. Basically, you need to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself for the duration of your trip.

For a successful Denmark Tourist Visa application, you need to prove that you have a minimum of €67.24 per day (500 DKK). However, if you plan to stay in a hostel (or cheaper accommodation), the required amount is reduced to €47.07 (350 DKK).

Quick tip: If you pay for accommodation in advance, the minimum amount required will decrease even more.

Gone are the days when you had to fill in the application form with a pen or pencil. Instead, you can now complete the Denmark Tourist Visa application online .

Here's how it works:

Fill in the application

Pay the visa fee

Print and sign cover letter: The cover letter will be generated after completing your visa application form. Additionally, you can find it under the "My application" menu.

Quick note: You may experience an error paying for your visa (I did). The issue is currently being addressed by authorities. For any inquiries, you can contact [email protected] with information regarding your payment. You can avoid this entire situation when applying through Atlys.

Another Denmark Visa requirement is an invitation letter (if applicable).

Depending on the purpose of your trip, you'll need to submit an invitation letter from a host in Denmark. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark has a specific invitation letter you'll need to submit.

But, there's a problem:

To access the correct invitation letter, you'll need to create a NemID . But, at the time of my writing this post, the NemID portal is not working - making it pretty tedious to create a NemID. Nonetheless, I'll add printable invitation letters you can use.

If you plan to visit a relative or friend (a private visit), you'll need to submit this invitation letter .

Quick note: Once you can create a NemID, it's best to get your invitation letter through the official website . Be mindful that the website will not be translated to English in some cases. Once again, I recommend getting your visa through Atlys, which will save you a lot of frustration.

If your trip to Denmark is for business purposes (Schengen Business Visa), you'll need to submit this invitation letter .

Quick note: Once you can create a NemID, you can get your invitation letter through the official website .

If the purpose of your trip is purely for tourism purposes, you don't need to submit an invitation letter.

What Are The Required Documents For The Denmark Tourist Visa?

For a successful Denmark Visa application, you'll need to submit the following required documents:

A complete Schengen Visa application form (completed online).

A valid passport or travel document. Your passport must be valid for 3 months after your trip and have 2 blank visa pages available.

A recent passport photo .

Copies of your passport and previous visas.

Proof of residency if you're a citizen applying in another country( such as a US Green Card )

A complete flight itinerary/Return flight ticket .

Proof of accommodation ( hotel reservation, Airbnb booking, etc. ).

Proof of financial means to support yourself ( bank statements, payslips, etc. ).

Documents that prove your employment statement ( employment contract , income tax returns, etc.).

Proof of Medical/Health insurance that provides a minimum of €30,000 in medical coverage.

An invitation letter ( if applicable )

A cover letter that includes the purpose of your trip, travel details, and personal information. ( This will be covered in the next section )

What Are The COVID-19 Entry Requirements For Denmark?

I'm afraid I won't be able to provide you with the exact covid restrictions and requirements. Because covid regulations change without notice, the information I provide might already be outdated. How To Apply For The Denmark Tourist Visa?

Finally, let's talk about the Denmark Tourist Visa application and the steps you need to take to get your visa. I've created 6 steps you can follow to successfully apply for your Denmark Tourist Visa.

1. Collect The Required Documents For Your Application

2. complete the online application form, 3. schedule a visa appointment, 4. attend your visa appointment, 5. wait for your visa to be processed, 6. collect your denmark tourist visa.

First things first. Collect the required documents for your visa application. Of course, you can do this later, but collecting your documents before starting the application will help you better understand the visa process.

Remember to make copies of all the required documents in case you misplace something.

Ok, now for the Schengen Visa application form. As you probably guessed, you'll need to complete the application form online .

The first step is to head over to the official website, register, and log in to your account. Once you've completed this, you'll need to read through the T&C's and continue with your application.

The required information is pretty basic, and you should have no problem filling it out. However, I just want to point out a few things:

Where to submit:

One of the first questions you'll be asked is, "Where are you submitting the application." Once you click the drop-down menu, you'll find a list of application centers available. Be sure to choose the correct center.

For example, in my case, I choose to submit my application at the Washington DC Visa Application Center (VFS).

So, suppose you're currently residing in another country with a residence permit (like a US Green Card). In that case, you must provide details regarding your Residence Permit.

Your invitation letter (if applicable):

Remember I mentioned that you may need an invitation letter when traveling to Denmark? This is where you can submit the invitation ID. Once you create an online invitation letter (when it finally works), you'll be able to upload it here. For now, you'll need to submit a printed invitation letter alongside your other required documents.

Pay for your visa:

Once you've completed your Schengen Visa application form, you'll be redirected to a secure payment portal. However, as mentioned, the payment system can cause some errors. So just be mindful of this.

Cover letter:

Basically, the cover letter proves the purpose of your trip. In addition, it includes information regarding your trip, accommodation, flight dates, and so on. This is a mandatory requirement for the Denmark Tourist Visa.

The cover letter is generated at the end of the application process and printed from there. Alternatively, you can access the letter via the 'My applications' menu.

Quick note: In most cases, Schengen Visa applications get denied due to mistakes made during the application process. I recommend researching the most common mistakes you should avoid when applying for the Schengen Visa .

Your visa application will not be processed if Embassy/Consulate authorities have not received your cover letter, required documents, and biometric information.

To submit these and all of the above, you'll need to schedule a visa appointment. Additionally, you must schedule an appointment at the Visa Application Center you specified in your online application.

Using the same example as before, I scheduled my visa appointment at the Washington DC Visa Application Center.

There are a few ways you can go about booking your Schengen Visa appointment:

Book your appointment using Atlys's appointment tool at the top of this page.

Contact the Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Application Center via email or phone call.

Use the online appointment tool found on most Visa Application Center's websites.

One more thing:

The first available appointment slot might not fit your schedule. For example: Suppose you want to schedule an appointment for the 1st of January. Likely, there won't be any appointment slots available. The next best slot might only be available on the 6th of January.

As the title suggests, you need to attend your visa appointment. Once you arrive for your appointment, you'll attend a short in-person interview with an Embassy/Consulate staff member.

You'll submit your Schengen Visa Application alongside all your required documents during the interview. Moreover, the staff member will ask you a few questions about the purpose of your trip. If you're stressed, don't be. I'm sure you'll ace your next Schengen Visa interview .

Afterward, your biometric information will be collected. This consists of your digital photograph and fingerprints. This will not be required if you've visited the Schengen Area in the past 59 months.

The hard part is done. Now all you need to do is wait for your visa to be processed. As mentioned, this can take anywhere between 15 - 30 business days.

Once your visa has been processed, authorities will notify you via email, SMS, or phone call (depending on your preferred contact method).

After your visa has been approved, it's time to celebrate!

Oh, and you should head over to the Visa Application Center to collect your passport. Attached to it, you'll find your new Denmark Tourist Visa.

Quick note: It's possible to add prepaid return shipping labels alongside your other documents. After your visa is approved, authorities will return your passport via mail (only if this service is available).

After a tiresome visa application, you can finally sit back and relax. The only thing left is to plan your next adventure in Denmark.

A good cover letter

There's no such thing as a perfect cover letter. You can never be completely certain of what the person who's going to read it wants. Sometimes, not even they know what they want. But if you find that you aren't being invited for interviews with the cover letters you're sending out, try something new.

We've collected 10 tips for what a great cover letter should include. To write a great cover letter, the most important thing is to align what you write with the position. Your employer should be able to clearly see who you are, what you're capable of, and how you can solve their specific problems.

1. Start with research

Before you can write a cover letter, you need to know what kind of business you're applying to and what kinds of assumptions they operate under. In other words, you want to show a potential employer that you have a fundamental understanding of the business. That way, you can tailor your cover letter to show the employer that you know what kind of workplace you're applying to. Use Google, the business's website, and LinkedIn profiles for your research.

2. Call and inquire about the position if you're uncertain

Job postings often name a variety of tasks and responsibilities without indicating which ones are most important. That's why it's a good idea to call and inquire about the position if you have any doubts. What will your main task be, and how will your employer evaluate your success in completing it?

3. This isn't about you and your career dreams

Your cover letter shouldn't be about all the great things a position will do for your career, or how it's something you've always dreamt of. Instead, show the business that you understand what they do and have thought about how you can solve their problems.

4. Get into character

Use personal (but not private) language that shows who you are. Academic language full of kilometre-long sentences can get rather dry, and it doesn't say much about who you are as a person. Your cover letter and CV will give a potential employer their first impression of you, so be sure to arouse their curiosity.

5. Target your writing and show employers that you can solve their most important problems

Potential employers can easily tell if you've sent them a "mass-produced" CV. Make sure that the job description, your CV, and your cover letter are aligned, so it's clear that the CV and cover letter match the job description.

Use the job description as a starting point. What are the three most important problems you'll need to solve? In your CV and cover letter, make it clear that you can solve them.

Focus on the future in your cover letter. Think about how you can solve the employer's three most important challenges from their job posting in the first three months. By writing in the present or the future, with phrases like "I will be able to" or "I can contribute" instead of "I did", you can align your writing with the employer's problems, so they can easily see how you will solve them. On the other hand, your CV should focus on the past and your previous experiences. They serve as arguments that support your cover letter.

6. End with your chin held high and some professional pride

You don't need to make a quiet exit, saying that you hope your application will be considered and you look forward to meeting in person. Of course you do.

7. Remember — one page only

A cover letter should be no longer than one page. If your cover letter comes out longer, cut back some. Choose the three most important things in the job posting that you want to base your writing around. "Kill your darlings", consider moving a description to your CV, and maybe have a friend go over your cover letter. Don't bother changing the margins or the font size; you'll only risk irritating a potential employer.

8. Get the details right

Be sure to proofread your writing and avoid irritating a potential employer by sending in a cover letter that doesn't tell them what you have to offer. Include your contact information (name, email address, phone number) in your cover letter and CV. Last, but not least, always be sure to send your cover letter and CV as PDF files. If you sent them as Word files, you risk that your formatting won't be preserved, so your cover letter may look messy.

9. What about recommendations?

Recommendations are of limited value. They will only be read closely if they are particularly relevant. Consider asking if employers are interested in recommendations before including them. On LinkedIn, others can recommend you. Since most employers will check your LinkedIn, you can share recommendations with them there instead. In your CV, you can also write that references are available upon request. That also enables you to control which of your references are contacted and when.

10. Don't be afraid to try something new

If you find that you aren't being invited for interviews with the cover letters you're sending out, try something new. For example, you can try a new layout, rewrite your content in a different style, or highlight different things. Try calling places that haven't replied to you and ask why you weren't considered. Employers may be able to give you tips as to what you can do differently in the future.
