Yashoda movie review: Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s good performance weakened by mindless narration

Yashoda movie review: samantha ruth prabhu brings grace to the role. but, the film's grindhouse treatment negates the impact of samantha's performance which has a lot of conviction..

Filmmakers Hari Shankar and Harish Narayan mock people’s intelligence with their latest film Yashoda , which stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead role . They have taken a fairly good idea that could have been a compelling popcorn entertainer and turned it into an insincere melodrama. Their treatment of the movie seems very much inspired by the drudgery of Indian soap operas and less influenced by passion, intelligence and artistry.

The movie begins with the death of a Hollywood actor under mysterious circumstances in Hyderabad . And enter two white people, who have no screen presence or acting skills, as the representatives of the US government. Their bad lip sync adds to the stink. The narration then jumps to another mysterious death. A supermodel and a rich businessman die in a car crash. At first, it seems a tragedy happened due to stupidity. The model tries to exchange a kiss with the businessman behind the wheels. The businessman indulges her, resulting in the crash. But, a hard-boiled investigator with an injured leg, Vasudev (Sampath Raj), walks in and declares: “This car accident is no accident. It’s a pre-planned murder!” “What? How?” exclaims the police commissioner, played by Murali Sharma.

With a lot of free time to kill, Vasudev is more than happy when he’s asked to assist in the investigation into the car accident. And then Vasudev begins to behave like a character straight out of C.I.D. He embodies the spirit of ACP Pradyuman as he makes it a point to state the most obvious things he sees at a crime scene.

Vasudev looks at a dead body and deduces, “Oh, he is dead!” Yes, we know what a dead man looks like. “He ate this food two days ago.” Yes, genius, we can see the date on the invoices attached to his food parcels. Do you have something better? “The dimensions of the freezer compartment are off.” Okay, that was an acceptable observation compared to all the low-hanging clues he picked earlier.

Vasudev’s unintentionally hilarious investigation runs parallel to Yashoda’s (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) story. She is at the end of her first trimester. And she is packed off to an undisclosed facility, which she will call home until she delivers her baby. She leaves her poor neighbourhood in an expensive car. It’s a wonder that it didn’t raise the alarm among her neighbours. Yashoda is given a pill. “What’s this for?” she asks her bruiser escort. And the guy does what could be termed a poor man’s Morpheus (The Matrix). An approximation of his dialogue. “You take the pill, we can go to the wonderland. Or you can go back to your life.” She takes the pill and wakes up in a well-furnished room; comfy blankets, fancy clothes, a fridge stacked with food, everything that a pregnant woman ever needs to stay happy. And there she befriends other women who have also become surrogate mothers for financial reasons.

But, the swanky building and the promises of a better future stand on the corpses of hundreds and hundreds of innocent lives. Yashoda is about to discover what she has got herself into and Madhu (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) and Gautham (Unni Mukundan) are about to find what Yashoda is made of.

Hari and Harish have a slew of interesting elements in the movie. But, instead of blending all these elements in a clever narration, they resort to exploitation. Instead of making the audience feel something, this movie exploits their feelings towards expecting mothers and unborn babies. And the filmmakers have not even been smart about that. The information dump is juvenile and lacks any discernible intelligence.

In the middle of a Mexican standoff of sorts, Yashoda feels it’s perfectly logical to recall her long-drawn sob backstory and explains why she came into this mess. And all the powerful guys involved in this large-scale, multinational, medical crime do everything by themselves. A corrupt cop video calls a central minister to live-stream the murder he is about to commit.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s performance as Madhu is so convincing and lacks any basic merits of movie acting. Samantha Ruth Prabhu brings grace to the role. But, the film’s unintelligent grindhouse treatment negates the impact of Samantha’s performance which has a lot of conviction. She was especially brilliant in action scenes. It’s a classic case of a good actor shining in a bad movie.

To be honest Yashoda was a snooze fest with never ending tedious sequences that treats it's audience as if they are fools. It lacks in every of those departments where a thriller has to be at it's best. It was extremely predictable, over that there was no solid punch in the screenplay which made the film look unengaging. How did this film even became a hit at the box office, Thyview you MF!!

Much like Yashoda’s combo of perugu + ketchup 🤮, Yashoda the movie takes two of the best Indian movies (Pokiri + Kahaani) and creates a mashup that makes you want to leave your seat. 

Yet, Samantha’s terrific performance compelled to give me this Telugu iteration of the Don’t Worry Darling trope three stars. She’s extremely believable in all shades of her role, whether it’s the naive young woman looking for money, or the tough police officer cracking down on a system that exploits poor women, she knocks it out of the park in every scene of this film. Samantha understood the assignment. Rest all didn't. Core idea from real events is scary but nothing else in writing actually lands. Writing team seem to be patting their backs just for finishing the first draft. Needed more refining and atleast 5 more drafts. Would have been a sharp thriller film if they hadn't gone the "CLIMAX TWIST...SURPRISE!!!" way like a regular film. That was evident from a dialogue and the first fight scene of first half. No surprise whatsoever.

Take away the K-drama aesthetics and a flashback that feels like the funniest possible extension of Shankar's I (or expand it, idk), and you actually have a sturdy arrangement of dystopia tropes that otherwise feel really dead in western studio movies now. Samantha is both bland and awesome the same way Gal Gadot is in her superhero role, and this is zippy enough to be a harmless B-movie star vehicle for her.

Samantha's such a cutie y'all but the movie was just plain terrible.

Also was it just me or did the dubbing feel off? Like, way off! I watched the original Telugu version but the audio didn't sync with the lip movements in a lot of places, especially whenever Varalaxmi spoke. In fact, you'd see her saying something (and there are subtitles given for that as well) but you couldn't hear her voice. Just the background score.

Yashoda Movie Review: Samantha Shines As An Action Star In This Surrogacy Thriller

Yashoda is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language action thriller movie. Hari-Harish wrote the script and directed the film. Samantha Ruth Prabhu is in the lead role along with Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Murali Sharma, and Unni Mukundan. The movie was out on November 11, 2022. The concept, performances, storyline twists, and directing of the movie are top-notch.

Yashoda Story

Yashoda, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, is a woman in need of money desperately. She consents to be a surrogate for a billionaire to save the health of her sick sister. They then transfer her from the slums to Eva, a luxurious facility, where the owner, Madhu and Doctor Gowtam look after her.

However, inside the facility, unusual behavior and disappearances likely start. Yashoda begins to realize that nothing is as it seems to be. She becomes aware of unlawful surrogacy activities and embarks on a mission to punish those responsible.

Yashoda Movie Review

In Telugu cinema, the idea of surrogacy was never in combination with the sci-fi and thriller genres. Samantha Ruth Prabhu, one of the highest-paid South Indian actresses , is the film’s main star, and directors K. Hari Shankar and Hareesh Narayan rely heavily on her. The beginning of “Yashoda” is full of comic scenes that frequently look silly. The plot occasionally looks lengthy. The film also devotes a lot of time to letting the audience get to know the characters. Samantha Ruth Prabhu makes every effort to easily balance both funny and serious scenes. There are some intriguing moments, such as the death of a Hollywood celebrity and a model, but the plot is poorly connected overall. Yashoda’s second half becomes fascinating.

The mystery begins to come into focus, the cast receives more substantial roles, and the film tries to pull you back in. Samantha’s sequences are the only ones that will keep you glued to the screen since Yashoda eventually becomes too obvious. You get chills listening to Mani Sharma’s ambient music, which acts as an eerie element. In “Yashoda,” Samantha Ruth Prabhu proves once more why she is a powerful actor in addition to being a star. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar also admires Madhu in the movie and keeps improving with each new project. Moreover, the doctor, Unni Mukundan, also makes a good impression. The way the movie “Yashoda” was shot has to be the most notable aspect of it.

Final Verdict

Yashoda is a fusion of action and relationship drama. It speaks to the emotional link between a surrogate mother and the kid and sibling relationships. Yashoda has a fascinating backdrop and is a good movie to watch this weekend. The producers did everything possible to actively promote the movie, which generated a lot of hype. Additionally, it tries to present a new story while combining incredible sci-fi sequences with action. Samantha Ruth Prabhu carries all of the movie’s weight. The only reason to see Yashoda in a theatre is to see Samantha Ruth Prabhu. We give the film 3.5 stars out of 5.

Yashoda Movie Review : Samantha’s much-anticipated film Yashoda has finally arrived today November 11, 2022, as the trailer got a brilliant response and the plot grabbed the attention, well, without any delay let’s delve into the in-depth review and find whether the film lives up to the expectations are not.

Yashoda(Samantha) is a middle-class girl who accepts to become a Surrogate and she becomes pregnant as She is instructed to abide by a few rules about her safety and physical well-being. However, once she gets to know about the shocking truths about Surrogacy, a series of incidents force Yashoda to live dangerously, endangering her health, Finally, how Yashoda gets out of that maze is the rest of the story.

Cast & Crew

Samantha, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Unni Mukundan, Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma, Sampath Raj, Shatru, Madhurima, Kalpika Ganesh, Divya Sripada, Priyanka Sharma, and others are playing major roles, and the film directed by Hari – Harish, while the cinematography has done by M. Sukumar, Music has composed by Manisharam and the film Produced by Sivalenka Krishna Prasad under the banner of Sridevi Movies.

Movie Verdict

The movie takes time to get into the actual story as we can see all the key characters’ introductions at the beginning of the film, however, once the twists unfold to Yashoda then the film gets interesting and makes you glued to the seat and from there the pace of the film fireworks as you can see unf0lding many layers of the story which are quite interesting to watch it on screen.

The major attraction of the film is the premise, a premise we have never seen in any film, Yashoda has all the elements that will surely connect all sections of the audience. The right amount of drama and a gripping screenplay made the first half engageable, The second half gets even more interesting when all the layers unfold, and also the second half focused on motherhood emotion, and that emotion land well.

We have seen a few movies made on the backdrop of ‘Surrogacy’ but this film stands out because it has many layers and all of them are somewhere related to the viewers. Yashoda has a few flaws as well, while Yashoda is trying to know who is behind this surrogate scam, the point itself is quite intriguing and the suspense is held by the makers quite well but once the twist is revealed, that was not convincing at all.

Samantha as Yashoda did a brilliant job as a Surrogate she showed her mettle in acting, there are many layers has Yashoda’s character and she effortlessly did it and it’s quite good to see her doing action scenes, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar, Unni Mukundan and Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma, Sampath Raj, Shatru, Madhurima, Kalpika Ganesh, Divya Sripada, Priyanka Sharma, all do their best in their respective roles.

The twin directors Hari – Harish came up with a brilliant tale and they delivered one of the finest films, though the writing deviated from the story the du0 succeeded in providing the right amount of thrill and the right amount of emotion. Many people are unaware of Surrogates as they showcased brilliantly how Surroagate scams are happening and how innocent women have been becoming victims.

Technically, Yashoda looks good, M. Sukumar’s cinematography is good as his framing, and shot composition takes you into the world of Yashoda, Manisharma’s songs are not up to the mark but he showed his experience in Background music, he makes us feel thrilled with his brilliant background score and  Ashok has done a brilliant artwork as the sets were erected so well and rest of the team did well.

Overall, Yashoda is well made Emotional Thriller and the film can be watchable by all sections of the audience.

Yashoda is a 2022 Indian Telugu -language action thriller film [7] written and directed by Hari–Harish . It stars Samantha in the title role alongside Unni Mukundan , Varalaxmi Sarathkumar , and Murali Sharma .

Principal photography commenced in December 2021 and ended in July 2022. The film's score was composed by Mani Sharma , while the cinematography and editing were handled by M. Sukumar and Marthand K. Venkatesh , respectively. The film was released on 11 November 2022. Yashoda received mixed reviews from critics. [5]

Yashoda, who works in Zomato , becomes a surrogate mother, as she needs to fund her sister's surgery. She is taken to Eva , a state-of-the-art surrogacy center owned by Dr. Madhubala. Yashoda befriends some of the surrogate mothers and spends time with them. All of them find out that each of them is poor, and in need of money.

Meanwhile, the local police investigate the accident of business tycoon, Shiva Reddy, and his girlfriend, Aarushi. They deduce that it was a pre-planned murder, and the police appoint Vasudeva IPS to lead the investigation. He learns that Aarushi was a model and checks her e-mails, mail, and text messages. He learns that Aarushi was advised by her friend to not promote a specific cosmetic brand, as it contains harmful chemicals that are unknown to scientists. Vasudeva and his team head to meet Aarushi's friend, but find that he was murdered two days ago. Vasudeva retrieves a cosmetic sample from his house and finds a connection with the death of Olivia, a deceased Hollywood actress, who was killed when she drank a drugged juice. When he checks into the owner of the cosmetic brand, he finds that the Central Minister , Giridhar, owns the patent.

After an attack by unknown men, Vasudeva learns that 122 models will be arriving in India, in six months. He learns that one model, Elena, has already arrived. Vasudev along with his team, and Police Commissioner Balram, follow her to a forest, but they are caught by the local tribals. Yashoda becomes suspicious of Eva , as she finds that her friends, Kajal and Leela, went missing after suffering from labor pains and undergoing surgery. To her shock, she learns that Eva is not situated in the city, but was actually shown to the surrogate mothers using a live-projector . Yashoda later sneaks into Zone-2, where she fights with Jenny, a fellow surrogate, who is faking her pregnancy and is a member of the Eva faculty. She tries to kill Yashoda, but Yashoda manages to kill her. Afterward, Yashoda finds many boxes containing dead children and surrogate mothers in the assets room, in which she finds Kajal and Leela's bodies and that of Leela's child.

Yashoda is then caught by the security guard under the command of Madhubala. When the security guard tries to rape her she fights against him and kills him too. She then tries to enter Madhubala’s cabin using Dr. Gautham’s badge to find out more about Eva but is caught by Madhubala. Madhubala reveals that she was suffering from a disease, which resulted in her losing her beauty and causes aging, but Gautham helped her by developing a drug that cured her illness. However, the drug is only a temporary solution, with its effects lasting only six months. Giridhar, who turns out to be Madhubala's husband, tells her to invent a new drug, by funding her research. Cut to the present, Madhubala and Gautham hold a meeting with their investors, while showing the live footage of the meeting, to Yashoda, who is being held captive in a separate room. The duo reveals that the plasma in the fetus is the secret ingredient used for the invention of the drug, and they hire poor women to become surrogate mothers, by paying them. After making them pregnant, inducing fake labor pains, and performing C-Section they remove the fetus, discreetly kill the woman, and retrieve the plasma.

They finally created the drug and sold it to rich women, mostly models, CEOs, and actresses. They also reveal that Olivia had died due to a drug–drug interaction . They had Aarushi and Shiva Reddy killed in the accident, as she learned that the cosmetic brand also contained the same drug, and threatened them of leaking it. In the forest, Vasudeva and his team learn that Balram is in cahoots with Madhubala and Gautham. Vasudeva and his team are brought to a den, to have them killed. At Eva , Yashoda finds that the facility is situated in a forest, and manages to escape through the emergency exit, but is knocked by Gautham, who brings her back. Gautham makes a video call to Balram, who is holding Vasudeva and his team, at gunpoint. However, Gautham, in turn, is held at gunpoint by Yashoda. It is revealed that Yashoda is actually a skilled IPS trainee, undercover at Eva . Despite being the academy topper, she was forced to arrange bribe, to join the police force.

One day, Yashoda learns about her sister, Brinda's disappearance, and finds that she had become a surrogate mother to arrange the money for her and was taken to Eva . In order to find her, Yashoda became a surrogate mother and planned everything from the start. A fight ensues, where Yashoda defeats the goons and Gautham but gets hit in the stomach, resulting in the death of her unborn baby . Meanwhile, Vasudeva and his team defeat the tribals and kill Balram. Yashoda meets up with her fellow surrogates and asks about Brinda but does not get any information about her.

Madhubala tries to escape in a helicopter, but Yashoda manages to stop her. Madhubala reveals that she was also pregnant, but sacrificed her fetus by aborting it to improve and develop her beauty and research. The women get enraged upon learning about Madhubala's true face and her activities, and push her off the cliff, killing her. Gautham tries to escape but gets caught by Vasudeva and his team. Yashoda finds Brinda, who is in labor pain. The women assist Yashoda in delivering Brinda's child. Afterward, Giridhar's involvement too in the scandal is exposed, and he is arrested.

Actress Samantha signed a Telugu-Tamil bilingual film in October 2021, directed by the duo Hari Shankar and Harish Narayan under the production of Sridevi Movies . [8] The film's title was announced as Yashoda in December 2021. [9] After discussing with executive producer Senthil, the film was made only in Telugu. [10] [11]

With cinematography and editing by M. Sukumar and Marthand K. Venkatesh , respectively, principal photography began in December 2021. [12]

After shooting for 100 days, filming was completed by July 2022, except for one song. CGI work and post-production works began subsequently. [13]

Yashoda was initially scheduled to release on 12 August 2022, coinciding with Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan . [14] [15] It was postponed due to delay in filming. [13] On 17 October 2022, the new release date was announced as 11 November 2022 where the film will be released in Telugu in addition to dubbed versions of Tamil , Hindi , Kannada and Malayalam languages. [16] [17]

The film made a pre-release business of ₹55 crore, including theatrical and digital streaming rights, which were sold at a cost of ₹11.50 crore and ₹20 crore respectively. [5] [18]

The film was premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 9 December 2022 in Telugu along with dubbed versions of Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam languages. [19] The Telugu version was premiered on television on 5 February 2023 on ETV . [20]

Yashoda received mixed reviews from critics and audience. [21] [22] Neeshitha Nyayapathi of The Times of India rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Yashoda is the film to catch this weekend if you're looking for something beyond the usual masala fare or love stories." [23] Priyanka Sundar of Firstpost rated the film 2.75 out of 5 stars and wrote "Samantha is brilliant in Yashoda that falters in effectively landing its shocking twists and turns". [24] Manoj Kumar R of The Indian Express rated the film 2 out of 5 and wrote "Film's grindhouse treatment negates the impact of Samantha's performance which has a lot of conviction". [25] Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote " Yashoda has quite a few loose ends as it draws to a close, leaving the viewer dissatisfied". [26]

Sudhir Srinivasan of Cinema Express rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Fascinating ideas don't translate into exciting storytelling in this Samantha-led actioner". [27] Sangeetha Dundoo of The Hindu wrote "But despite the missteps, it manages to be engaging." [28] Arvind V of Pinkvilla rated the film 2.5 out of 5 and wrote "Mollywood actor Unni Mukundan is likely to become a sought-after name in Telugu cinema after this." [29] Haricharan Pudipeddi of Hindustan Times wrote "The production design deserves a special mention since most of the story unfolds inside a large facility and the setwork is commendable." [30] Janani K of India Today wrote "Yashoda could have been much better had the director duo concentrated on not stating the obvious." [31]

Shrishti Negi of News18 gave 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "Yashoda requires patience and attention. Once you get through the first half, the film holds your complete attention, making it worthy of your time." [32] A critic for India Herald wrote "Overall, the movie is at most mediocre. Samantha distinguishes out because she effortlessly handled a dual-shaded character. Excellent production values. The other casting is also excellent." [33]

Hari and Harish are pioneers as filmmakers of three consecutive first-of-its-kind movies in Tamil, namely Orr Eravuu (2010), India's First Viewpoint film, Ambuli (2012), first Stereoscopic 3D Tamil film and Aaaah (2014), first horror anthology Tamil film.

Kushi ( transl.  Happiness) is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Shiva Nirvana. Produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under the production banner Mythri Movie Makers, the film features Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha with Sachin Khedekar, Jayaram, Saranya Ponvannan and Murali Sharma in supporting roles.

Divya Sripada is an Indian actress who works in Telugu films. She started her career with the YouTube channel Girl Formula by Chai Bisket. She is known for her work in Telugu films including Colour Photo, Middle Class Melodies.

Neither a hit or miss operation.

A solid story about surrogate mothers and the worrying crimes happening around it. Unfortunately, it offers only minimal engagement and the pace is nowhere brisk, lacking gripping moments. (more)
