This thesis examines the role of the cultural discourse on the indigenous religious traditions of China and their place within an officially sanctioned construction of Chinese culture. It starts by examining the concept of culture as it developed in the modern era, its place within the construction of national identities, and the marginalizing effects this has on certain members of national populations. Next it turns to the development of the cultural discourse within China from the mid-1800s to the Cultural Revolution, highlighting the social and legal transformations as they restricted and reframed the practice and articulation of religious traditions in mainland China. Following these early articulations of a cultural discourse in China and the subjugation of religious traditions to secular standards of legitimation, it examines the official presentations and governmentally sanctioned forms of the Daoist tradition in post-Mao China during a “cultural revival,” through an analysis of official publications and online presentations. Finally, it examines the way teachers and administrators package Chinese culture for a foreign audience through the Confucius Institute.

This thesis argues that, despite greater freedom to explore indigenous traditions previously written off as “superstitious” within the cultural revival of contemporary China, the official cultural discourse in China continues to operate within the parameters of a modern cultural identity that marginalizes ritualistic forms of religion, allowing these religious forms to survive in an official space only as exotic images, sanitized and secularized activities, or ethical ideals.

Essay On Chinese Culture

The traditional Chinese cultures have a development process for thousand years, now we are creating another kind of traditional culture especially under the wave of globalization. Although the form of expressing or performing the culture experienced some changes but the basic idea and belief behind rarely changed. To promote Chinese culture we would refer to the essence of Chinese wisdom so the following is actual practicing of different dimensions of Chinese traditions which show the beauty of China . The family concept is the essence of Chinese culture. From ancient China to modern, the idea of family is always associated with love and harmonious which is also the basis of our nation and our country, therefore, I would like to include this …show more content…

But in China, this view seems cannot be fully correct as even China has different ethics group, but still, they could live together peacefully in general. Different aboriginal contain their local culture but they seem did not reject each other. China is a country with diverse ethnic groups, 56 recognized by PRC, so I would like to promote this special feature by using the sentence” This is China, this is home.” in different dialects at the end of this video. China has 7 major regional dialects and numerous sub-dialects including, Northern(北方話), Hakka(客家話), Wu (吳語), Min (閩語), Yue(粵語), Xiang(湘語) and Gan(贛語). Although this huge population not really share same dialects or language, but in general we could still have a harmonious relationship between different ethnic groups. Doubtless, Han is the main population in China, however, it does not mean that only Han culture is important, in opposite, a variety of dialects could be also a tool to maintain this harmonious condition and to keep different areas’ local culture which constructed our nation 's’ diversity. Dialect is an expression in cultural heritage, it carries regional culture, cultural characteristics of the area it is also the root of the folk culture. Therefore, government agencies and linguists should take active and effective measures to rescue endangered dialects and protect them so that they can inherit regional culture and promote social stability at the same time. Dialect should be cherished and protected, it constructed our beloved

Eurasia And Han China Essay

In the Classical era, two very comparable empires carried out the cycle of rising and falling on the far western and eastern ends of Eurasia. While only Rome had to struggle to grow from a single city to an enormous empire, both Rome and Han China rose to power on the backs of their brutal armies. And, the fall of both empires negatively impacted the life of common people as well as the cultivation of culture across Eurasia. In the beginning of its reign, the Roman empire labored to grow from an impoverished city-state into a more expansive political force.

Mingo Culture Essay

The Mingo were a highly developed culture and though displaced by Europeans, they have retained many of their customs and beliefs. This Native American tribe continues to show many aspects of its ancestry through daily practices and its religious and social structures even with European influence and displacement to reservations. A part of everyday life for Mingo Indians was the clothes that they wore. The men of the tribe wore breechcloths with leggings, and the women of the tribe usually wore kilts, wore wraparound skirts, short leggings, and overdresses.

Shang Dynasty Essay

Chinese Spring & Autumn Period (Shang and Zhou Dynasties): Significance of Sun Tzu & His Book “The Art of War” As we know it today, China has been one of the most successful countries in the world, early China is much different from what we know to be the Republic of China. Before becoming one massive country, China was divided into many kingdoms between two very significant rivers, the Yellow and Yangtze rivers. Today, historians conclude that they have been able to uncover facts about the Chinese dynasties to as early as 1700 B.C. Artifacts, bronze weapons, and written records show the successes of an era known as the Shang and Zhou dynasty.

Buddhism In China Dbq Essay

Buddhism in China DBQ A little before the Tang dynasty there was the Han dynasty where Confucianism was a staple of daily life and government. When the Han dynasty dissolved and the Tang dynasty took authority. Buddhism began to spread widely all over China. Buddhism was met with all types of responses: some saw buddhism as a threat to Confucian family values, while some saw Buddhism as a way to disregard worldly pleasures and luxuries that would only bring them harm, and lastly some mixed on the concept of Buddhism had an issue with the ascetic lifestyle led by its followers. One of the responses to Buddhism in China was that it was thought that Buddhism was a threat to Confucian family values.

Pa Chin's Family Character Analysis

Family by Pa Chin is a captivating novel that describes what life in China was like in the twentieth century. Confucianism, a big religion in China at the time, was heavily focused on filial piety. Filial piety is the relationship of obedience, in which the elders are to be respected by the younger generation (Wu, lecture notes, 2015). This religion was one of the main structures on how the society was ran. Chin represents how the younger generation was upset with how the old traditions of the Confucian system were ran and that they were ready to change it.

Importance Of Family In The Odyssey

The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. In life, there is a universal desire for oneness among people—we want to belong. It is why we collaborate, support common causes, cheer for sports teams, feel nationalism; it’s why we build villages, towns, and cities. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment.

Religion In Classical China Essay

Religion in Classical China Since human’s earliest years, we have relied on religion to guide us in countless situations; it influences almost everything we do. During the Classical Period in China, religion played large roles in many significant decisions. The three most prominently displayed religions at the time were Legalism, Confucianism, and Daoism. Though their unique teachings separated them from each other, each had equal impacts in the shaping of early Chinese civilization and culture.

Analysis Of Individualism And Collectivism In China

Chinese tradition is opposed to individual glorification and considers anyone who desires personal enhancement as a threat to collectivism (Pye, 1982). Chinese are more group-oriented, they value respect and friendship. China is more Egalitarian, meaning that they share power and share authority and spread the authority out evenly. They do not expect all power as some cultures do. Next is Performance orientation, which means when the community encourages and rewards good things done and completed.

Chinese Culture Personal Statement

Personal Statement I would like to confirm that it is my motivating of Chinese culture that ignited my passion for cultural and creative industry. As a Tourism Management major student, I was able to explore the Chinese diversified cultures and landscapes, which offered me an insightful understanding of the Chinese cultural development. Under the guidance of commercialization, some cultural heritages have developed into huge tourism souvenir markets full of counterfeit and shoddy products. The over-commercialization reveals the fact that the Chinese culture is facing a severe situation. The country calls for a better cultural development strategy, which cultural and creative industry can offer.

Ming Dynasty Essay

First and foremost, I greatly appreciated the third group’s effort in presenting the topic of Scientific Development in Ming Dynasty. The topic itself was dynamically unique, evolving around the scientists and intellects, which were often overlooked by the significance of Imperial authorities in describing Ming Dynasty. I admired how delicate the presentation was conducted with great coherence as the team members introduced one individual figure to another in the systematic timeline order along with their endeavors. Nevertheless, I believed that the otherwise outstanding presentation would be much improved if the members could briefly articulate on the period of Ming Dynasty itself and how the figures discussed were affected by the Dynasty’s

Gender Inequality In The Family

The family is viewed as an essential part of our society, it always has been and it always will be. Although the family as a unit is vital for the continuous running of our society it can no longer be known as a fixed category. The first definition of a family found online is “a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit”. This is still the only way many people can view a family. Another that deviates from this particular image is seemingly wrong or incomplete.

An Analysis Of Hometown, By Luis Cabalquinto

It is something each and ever person possess. The home in the context of the country and its dwellers is significant as it holds the smallest unit of government which is the family. Being a highly family-oriented country, Family is of utmost importance within our society. Our values, our upbringing and even culture is centralized around family. The word “family” is used profusely as it is not anomalous for Filipinos to treat every loved one as blood relatives.

Speech About Family

Family Family is one of the greatest gift and blessing from the Lord. Without family you can not feel love, care , satisfaction and happiness. They are the most treasured blessing that no one can take away from us. It is also like a fragile thing you consider as the most precious gem in your whole life. Family is a basic unit in the society traditionally consisting of parents and children.

In this chapter, the author first reconstructs the concept of globalization from seven aspects: (1) Globalization as a way of global economic operation, (2) as a historical process, (3) as a process of financial marketization and political democratization, (4) as a critical concept, (5) as a narrative category, (6) as a cultural construction and reconstruction, and (7) as a theoretic discourse. So China’s globalization practice is a sort of “glocalization”. The same is true of modernity in China, which could be viewed as an alternative modernity or modernities with Chinese characteristics. The impact of globalization on Chinese culture manifests itself in the following aspects: (1) it helped form a sort of Chinese modernity, or a sort of alternative modernity; (2) the popularization of Neo-Confucianism in the current era; and (3) the “Belt and Road” initiative and the building up of a community of shared future for mankind. The author also tries to offer his reconstruction of globalization with regard to its “glocalized” practices in China, mainly from a cultural and intellectual perspective. To the author, in the global era, modernity has taken on a new look, which is of different forms in different regions and which will contribute to global modernity.
