A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible. 

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

On April 7, every year World Health Day is celebrated. It is an initiative taken by the WHO ( World Health Organization ) to raise awareness among people across the world. This day reminds people to take their health more seriously. The WHO organized local, regional and international events on this day. WHO helps in protecting health from the adverse effects of climate change, run campaigns to provide awareness among us.

Good Health

Good health doesn't only mean the absence of disease in the body but it is a complete mental, physical, spiritual as well as social well being of an individual.

It is always advisable to eat fresh food and fruits instead of junk or spicy food which are harmful to the body. Drinking sufficient amounts of water, intake of milk and seasonal food should be included in our food. Food in olden days was very naturally cultivated or grown but nowadays it is grown full of chemicals. This will harm our health.

Maintain a balanced diet daily. Using healthy oils, more veggies, intake of fruits and grains, and drinking sufficient amounts of water can be considered as a proper diet. Intake of food more than the body requires is also unhealthy .

Being physically active can improve your brain health, reduce the risk of disease, help to manage weight, strengthen bones and muscles and improve one's ability to do everyday activities. Most of the health issues which many one are facing today are due to the lack of physical work.

Health is wealth means that being healthy is more important than being wealthy. Wealth can be lost, but good health is priceless and cannot be bought with money. A person who is in good health is able to work efficiently and enjoy life to the fullest. On the other hand, a person who is constantly battling illness will find it difficult to lead a normal life, regardless of how much wealth they may have.

For example, consider a wealthy business person who falls ill and is unable to work for an extended period of time. Despite their wealth, they will not be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor and may even face financial difficulties due to the costs of medical treatment. In this situation, good health would have been a much more valuable asset than wealth.

Therefore, it is important to prioritise one's health and take steps to maintain it, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. By doing so, a person can enjoy both good health and wealth, and live a fulfilling life.

Scottish singer Lulu says she says practices “speech fasting” — staying completely silent until midday.

The 75-year-old crooner told The Guardian that she partakes in the practice in a bid to preserve her vocal cords.

“It helps take care of my instrument,” she stated in an interview published on Tuesday. “It allows me to sing.”

According to the publication, Lulu “isn’t even allowed to whisper” as she “exists in a state of extended silence.”

While speech fasting may be unconventional, The Guardian asserts that it “has a multitude of benefits that aren’t necessarily related to helping you perform.”

One 2005 study , published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), determined that periods of silence led to “dramatically lowered blood pressure” for participants who practiced speech fasting.

Meanwhile, a 2021 study, which is also featured on NIH, found the practice helped reduce levels of cortisol (a stress hormone).

Additionally, psychologist Dr. Robert N. Kraft has asserted that engaging in periods of prolonged silence helps a person to become a better listener.

While speech fasting may be unconventional, The Guardian asserts that it "has a multitude of benefits that aren’t necessarily related to helping you perform."

But there may be some downsides to speech fasting — excluding the obvious fact you can’t clearly and quickly communicate your needs.

The king’s remarks were pre-recorded and played during a Maundy Thursday service at Worcester Cathedral in England. At the start of the speech, Charles expressed his disappointment that he would not be able to physically be there for the service, before sharing a story about Jesus. “Ladies and gentlemen, it is for me a great sadness that I cannot be with you all today. The Maundy Service has a very special place in my heart. It has its origin in the life of our Lord, who knelt before his disciples and to their great surprise, washed their travel-weary feet,” he said. “As we have just heard, in doing so, he deliberately gave to them and to us all an example of how we should serve and care for each other.”

While speaking about the many organizations that help people across the U.K. and the “kindness” of different people who service their communities, Charles spoke about how friendship is very important during difficult times. “We need and benefit greatly from those who extend the hand of friendship to us, especially in our time of need,” he said.

As he concluded, he spoke about how he tries to follow in Jesus’ footsteps as he offered an Easter message to the congregation. This act of worship here in Worcester Cathedral reminds me of the pledge I made at the beginning of the coronation service to follow Christ’s example not to be served but to serve. That, I have always tried to do and continue to do with my whole heart. It is my special prayer today that our Lord’s example of serving one another might continue to inspire us and to strengthen all our communities,” he said. “May God bless you all this Easter.”

The speech came over a month after Charles announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, after undergoing a procedure for an enlarged prostate. While undergoing treatment, he’s continued to make occasional public appearances .

Charles’ Easter message also came about a week after his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton revealed that she’d also been diagnosed with cancer. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said that he’s very supportive of the Princess of Wales amid her own health battle. “[The king] is so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did,” they said in a statement to  Entertainment Tonight.

What is Physical Health?

Physical health tells about the state of our physical body. That how are we maintaining our body. This has nothing to do with the physical appearance, being slim or anything like that. It means that how our physical body is operating.

Speed dating is making a comeback as Gen Z ditches dating apps. We shouldn't be surprised.

After her three-year relatio nsh ip ended in 2023, 28-year-old executive assistant Kelly Carlson did as many young adults do: She downloaded a popular dating app to put herself out there again.

And, like many others, she found the experience disappointing. Feeling a lack of romance with the app, Carlson wanted to find a better way of meeting people. So, when she saw a flyer at a nearby California brewery advertising $35 for a night of speed dating, she figured she'd give it a try.

"I wanted to be excited about dating again," Carlson says. Speed dating is "almost like going back to the time when we were all in office a lot more and you have a work crush, or you're in school and you have a crush. You kind of get a sense of someone... instead of just looking at people online and you have no sense of who they are and how they really relate."

Carlson's not alone. Amid an epidemic of loneliness , speed dating is making a comeback, especially, experts say, among Gen Z and millennials who are experiencing dating app fatigue. Dating experts say speed dating is a great option for those looking to get off their phones and meet people who may shine more in person than they do online.

"I'm a fan of anything that is going to get you meeting more single, like-minded people who are looking for relationships," Blaine Anderson, a dating coach for men, says. "So, if that's speed dating, I am all about it."

Speed dating's popularity is booming. We shouldn't be surprised.

Speed dating has surged in popularity over the past three years, according to Eventbrite, an event management and ticketing website where many speed-dating events are advertised.

The company saw a 63% surge in speed dating events from 2021 to 2022. According to data shared with USA TODAY, that trend seems to have continued, with the company reporting a 30% increase in singles and dating events in the United States from 2022 to 2023 and a 43% increase in attendance at these events over the same period.

Organizers for these events are also getting creative. Recent singles events on Eventbrite include board-game speed dating , tantra speed dating , outdoor strolls for singles and singles karaoke . Game-based and athletic dating events also increased from 2022 to 2023.

It makes sense people, particularly young adults, are gravitating toward speed dating, says Damona Hoffman , a dating coach and the author of "F the Fairy Tale: Rewrite the Dating Myths and Live Your Own Love Story." Because of COVID-19, many people moved most of their lives online. This is especially true for Gen Z, many of whom started dating just as the world shut down amid the pandemic.

"Many of them have never had that IRL dating experience really ever," Hoffman says. "So they kind of have this almost fantasy view of what it must have been like to meet someone at a bar or club or speed-dating event. It almost has this fantasy story around it that may not really exist in person when they get there, but the idea of it still feels fresh and new, and it's something different than what they've been doing the last four years."

So are dating apps canceled? Not so fast

Despite growing enthusiasm for speed dating, dating apps continue to reign as one of the most popular ways daters to meet. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center report, one-in-10 partnered adults met their current significant other on a dating app or website. That figure is one-in-five for those under 30.

Still, that doesn't mean everyone's happy with dating apps. In that same report, 46% of people said their experiences using a dating app or website were very or somewhat negative.

Gen Z is also less likely to use online dating services than millennials. According to a 2023 Statista report , people between the ages of 30 and 49 make up 61% of online dating users, while people between 18 and 29 make up only 26%.

For Carlson, one of the biggest downsides to online dating is the amount of users who aren't honest about their intentions. In contrast to dating apps, speed dating often requires more money and effort to participate. Though that's likely to deter some daters from trying it, it also means those who do invest in speed dating are more likely to take it seriously, Hoffman says.

"If they're going to sign up for a speed-dating event, they're not just looking for likes and pen pals," Hoffman says. "They're actually wanting to make some sort of a connection."

Andrea Ramirez, who hosts the Los Angeles speed-dating event Love in LA, says her event boasts an 80% match rate, meaning participants have an 80% chance of meeting someone there whom they want to see again. One pair who met at the event last March became engaged nine months later, she says.

"It used to be seen as this outdated method, and it was almost like a last resort that you would go to a speed dating event," Ramirez says. "Now, it's turning into a fun thing for girls to do together."

Meg Wray, 35, attended a speed dating event with her friends in Vancouver, Canada, last Thursday. She says the experience gave her an opportunity to consider people she may have otherwise passed on while online dating.

"I liked kind of the randomness of it all," Wray says. "Sometimes online I might overthink things a little bit. 'Is it a yes? Is it a no?' There's a lot of filters that we put people through before we actually make it to a date, and there wasn't a lot of filters on this (event)."

Interested in speed dating? Here are some tips

Experts offer the following tips for those looking to speed date:

  • Show up like you would on a normal date: That means looking your best and doing any pre-date rituals to feel your best, Anderson says.
  • Keep the conversation interesting: Speed dates are short, so ask interesting questions. Otherwise, it can feel like a series of interviews, Hoffman says.
  • Treat it as practice: Speed dating draws on a lot of skills most people who are used to online dating don't get to practice often. Like anything else, know speed dating takes time to get good at and don't put too much pressure on yourself, Hoffman says.

Carlson says she ended up matching with someone "really nice" at the speed dating event she went to. The two haven't scheduled a second date yet, but she thinks she might see him sometime within the next week.

Carlson encourages fellow singles to give speed dating a try. After all, what's the worst that could happen?

"You only have such a short amount of time," she says, "so, even if it goes terribly, you're only with that person for about five minutes."

Amid Health Concerns, Pope Delivers Strong Easter Message Calling for Gaza Cease-Fire

Pope Francis’ decisions to reduce his participation in two major Holy Week events had raised fears about his health.

Amid renewed concerns about his health, Pope Francis presided over Easter Sunday Mass, and with a hoarse but strong voice, he delivered a major annual message that touched on conflicts across the globe, with explicit appeals for peace in Israel, Gaza and Ukraine.

The appearance came after the pope decided to reduce his participation in two major Holy Week events, seemingly at the last minute.

Those decisions seemed to represent a new phase in a more than 11-year papacy throughout which Francis has made the acceptance of the limits that challenge and shape humanity a constant theme. Now, he seems to have entered a period in which he is himself scaling back to observe, and highlight, the limits imposed by his own health constraints, and to conserve strength for the most critical moments.

On Sunday after the Mass, Francis took a prolonged spin in his popemobile around St. Peter’s Square before ascending to a balcony overlooking it to deliver his traditional Easter message.

“Let us not allow the strengthening winds of war to blow on Europe and the Mediterranean,” he said to the tens of thousands of faithful, dignitaries, Swiss Guards and clergy filling the square.

Referring to the stone that had blocked the tomb of Jesus before his resurrection, which Easter celebrates, Francis said that “today, too, great stones, heavy stones, block the hopes of humanity.”

“The stone of war, the stone of humanitarian crises, the stone of human rights violations, the stone of human trafficking, and other stones as well,” he said.

The address was a compendium of Francis’ priorities, including the need to ease the suffering of people affected by war, natural disasters and famine in parts of the world he has himself visited. He addressed the plight of migrants, prayed for “consolation and hope” for the poor, and spoke against human trafficking and arms dealing.

But his focus, Francis said, was particularly turned toward the conflicts afflicting the world.

“My thoughts go especially to the victims of the many conflicts worldwide, beginning with those in Israel and Palestine, and in Ukraine,” he said, calling for the exchange of all prisoners between Russia and Ukraine.

“I appeal once again that access to humanitarian aid be ensured to Gaza, and call once more for the prompt release of the hostages seized on 7 October last and for an immediate cease-fire in the Strip,” he added.

Holy Week is one of the most demanding and significant on the Christian calendar, and Francis has been dogged all winter by what the Vatican has called the flu, bronchitis and cold-like symptoms. His doctor told the Italian news media on Saturday that Francis was in good shape for his age, but that flu season was difficult for him, as it was for many older people, partly because he had part of a lung removed as a young man.

In recent years, Francis’ health has declined. He had a significant portion of his large intestine removed in 2021, and last year he spent time in the hospital to remove potentially dangerous intestinal scar tissue from previous surgeries. Bad knee ligaments have often kept him to a wheelchair, and have required him to use a cane when he is on his feet.

Those ailments came to the fore last week when Francis skipped the homily , a sermon central to the Mass service, on Palm Sunday, and the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum — an event he missed last year because he was recovering from bronchitis.

But this year, a chair for him had been placed on a platform outside the Colosseum, suggesting that the decision not to attend came at the last minute. The Vatican said Francis had made the decision “to conserve his health” in preparation for events on Saturday and Sunday.

Francis did preside over the Holy Thursday ritual of washing the feet of the faithful at a women’s prison in Rome. He appeared both purposeful and strong, talking with the inmates and giving a chocolate Easter egg to one of their sons. Then on Saturday evening, he presided over a long and solemn Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica.

On Sunday, Francis waved and seemed in good spirits as people shouted, “Long live the pope,” during his spin around St. Peter’s Square. He then re-emerged on the basilica’s balcony, lined with flowers, where he spoke about the toll that conflicts take on civilians.

In what amounted to a survey of the world’s often-forgotten conflicts, the pope spoke about the continuing suffering in Syria because of “a long and devastating war.” He expressed concern for Lebanese people affected by hostilities on their country’s border with Israel. He prayed for an end to the “violence, devastation and bloodshed” in Haiti, an easing of the humanitarian crisis afflicting the Rohingya ethnic minority persecuted in Myanmar, and an end to the suffering in Sudan and in the Sahel region of Africa.

And in Gaza, he said the eyes of suffering children ask: “Why? Why all this death?”

Participants Needed for a Study on Listening Experiences

Researchers in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences are looking for persons 65 years old and older for a study about real-life listening difficulties.

Participants in the study will have two sessions with the researcher, one in-person and one via phone/videoconference. The in-person session will happen in a convenient location for the participant – either their residence or a community location such as a local library, or at a UMass lab in Amherst or Springfield.

During the study, which will last for one week, participants will respond to survey questions on their mobile phone. Participants will undergo a hearing screening, a memory screener and a phone interview about their listening experiences, and will be asked to answer a few questions 3-5 times per day about their listening experiences using a mobile phone app.

To be eligible for the study, participants must not be a current hearing-aid-user and must believe they have a hard time understanding speech in at least one situation. They will receive a $20 Amazon gift card for completing this study.
