How to Use Nearpod

Sakshi Garg

Nearpod is a formative assessment platform that provides teachers with tools to produce engaging teaching content for the students. It offers countless tools to make learning fun. Especially, right now with remote learning, it can be difficult to engage students’ attention. But with Nearpod, you can make lessons more interactive, and students will absorb them better.

Getting Started on Nearpod for Teachers

Teachers can create an account for free on Nearpod and access all of the free features. Nearpod also offers silver, gold, or platinum plans that unlock more features for you to use.

Go to nearpod.com and click on the ‘Sign up for Free’ option.

presentation view nearpod

Enter your name and email address to get started. Then, enter the name of your school, and select your role – in this case, teacher. Then, click on ‘Done’.

presentation view nearpod

The account creation is complete, and you will reach the dashboard for your Nearpod account.

Creating a Lesson

Now that you’ve created an account, the next step is to create a lesson. There are several ways to create a lesson for your students – you can create one from scratch, import it from other platforms such as Google Slides, or PowerPoint, and lastly, you can download one of the pre-made lectures available on Nearpod.

Let’s try creating one from scratch as it’s the most complicated, and yet probably the one you’ll use the most. Go to ‘My Library’ from the dashboard of Nearpod. Then, click on ‘Lesson in Nearpod’ option to create a new lesson.

presentation view nearpod

The screen for creating a lesson will open. Click on ‘Add slide’ to create a new slide.

presentation view nearpod

If you want to use material from an existing slide, click on ‘Upload files’ or drag and drop the file there.

presentation view nearpod

When you click the ‘Add Slide’ button, a window will open where you can select what type of content you want to add to the slide. There are two tabs in the window – Content, and Activity.

If you want to add a non-interactive content type, you can select it from the content tab. Nearpod lets you choose from these content types: Slide, Video, Web content, Nearpod 3D, Simulation, Field Trip (Nearpod VR), BBC video, Microsoft Sway, Slideshow, Audio, PDF viewer, and Live Twitter stream.

presentation view nearpod

For interactive content that lets students participate in the lesson, go to the ‘Activity’ tab and choose one of the following activities: Time to Climb, Open-Ended Question, Matching Pairs, Quiz, Flipgrid, Draw It, Collaborate!, Poll, Fill in the Blanks, Memory Test.

presentation view nearpod

You can add multiple slides to a lesson, each containing any of the content types mentioned above, i.e., your lesson can be an amalgam of all the content types Nearpod offers. So you can use any of the content types in a single lesson to make it more interesting and engaging.

You can have as many slides as you want in a lesson, but there are limitations on the size of the lesson with the free plan. The maximum size of the lesson with the free plan is 40 MB.

Once you have added all the slides, click on the ‘Save & Exit’ button to save the lesson. If you don’t save it, it will still appear as an unsaved lesson on your dashboard. But you need to save it to share it.

presentation view nearpod

A small window will open. Enter a title, and description (optional), and specify the grade and subject the lesson is for and click on the ‘Save & Exit’ button.

presentation view nearpod

Sharing the Lesson with Students

Now, the lesson will appear on your dashboard, and you can share it with your students. Hover on it, and a few options will appear. Now you can choose to share the lesson as a live lesson, student-paced lesson, or a live lesson with Zoom meeting (in beta).

Sharing as a Live Lesson

To share the lesson so students can participate in real-time, click on the ‘Live Participation’ option.

presentation view nearpod

A code will appear on your screen. Share this code with your students, and they will be able to join the live lesson. You can also use one of the other methods given in this window like email, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, link, etc. to share the lesson with the students.

presentation view nearpod

The first slide of the lesson will be an additional slide that will show the list of students who have joined the lesson. When all the students have joined, you can move to the next slide (technically the first slide you created in the lesson), and the lesson will start on the students’ screens.

You can also see the list of all the students during the lesson by clicking on the ‘People’ icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

presentation view nearpod

Sharing as a Live Session with Zoom

These days, when the only mode of teaching is through online classes, you’ll most probably be sharing live Nearpod lessons while teaching an online class. If you use Zoom to teach your class, this option in Nearpod will drastically reduce the number of steps involved.

You don’t need to create a meeting room separately and share the link for both the Nearpod lesson and the meeting room with your students. Instead, a single code would work for both.

Note: Before using this feature, you must have a Zoom account and the desktop app for Zoom meetings. This feature is also only available on Nearpod for browsers, and not yet for Android/ iOS apps.

On the dashboard, click the ‘Live Participation + Zoom’ option on the lesson.

presentation view nearpod

A code will be generated. Turn on the toggle for ‘Make this a Zoom meeting’ beneath it. A button for ‘Create Your Zoom meeting’ will appear, click on it.

presentation view nearpod

A confirmation message will appear. Click on ‘Start Zoom’.

presentation view nearpod

If this is the first time you’re trying to use Nearpod with Zoom, you will need to sign in to your Zoom account and authorize Nearpod access to your account. But before you can authorize, you need to pre-approve the app. First, click on ‘Pre-approve’, and then click on ‘Authorize’. If you have an organization Zoom account, then your Zoom admin needs to pre-approve access to the app.

presentation view nearpod

Zoom desktop client will open and the meeting will begin. Share the Nearpod lesson code with your students so they can join the lesson and the Zoom meeting.

presentation view nearpod

Students only need to go to nearpod.com and enter the join code to enter the lesson as well as the Zoom meeting in one step.

Students will enter the waiting room in Zoom by default, and you need to admit them to the meeting.

presentation view nearpod

Sharing as a Student-Paced Lesson

To share the lesson as a student-paced lesson, hover on the presentation and select ‘Student-paced’ from the options.

presentation view nearpod

Similar to the live lesson, a code will appear on your screen which you can share with the students or use one of the other methods like email, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, link, etc. to share it with them.

A student-paced lesson will show something like ’29 days remaining’ on the window. This is the expiration date for the lesson code, or in other words, the number of days students have to complete the lesson. You can extend the number of days up to a year. Click on the ’29 days remaining’ option to open the calendar and increase/ decrease the number of days the lesson will remain accessible with that code.

presentation view nearpod

If the lesson has an activity that requires students’ responses, you can also turn on the toggle for ‘Require student submissions’. The students won’t be able to skip to the next slide until they have submitted the answers to the current slide with this mode on.

presentation view nearpod

Students can join a student-paced lesson similar to a live participation lesson, and don’t need an account for it. The only difference is that students control the presentation themselves in this lesson mode.

Joining a Nearpod Lesson as a Student

Whether the lesson is a live participation lesson, a live lesson with a Zoom room, or a student-paced lesson, the method of joining stays the same for students. Go to join.nearpod.com to join the lesson if the teacher has provided them with a code. If the teacher has instead shared a link, simply click on it to join.

The code will be a 5-letter code, and it is not case sensitive. Enter the code and click on the ‘Join’ button.

presentation view nearpod

Then enter your name and additional information like a roll number if the teacher requires you to (this is optional). Click the ‘Join session’ option, and you will enter the lesson.

presentation view nearpod

If it is a live participation lesson, you can only see the content of the presentation, and participate in the ‘activity-based’ slides but not control the actual presentation.

For a student-paced lesson, you will be the one in control. Click on the left and right arrows to move through the slide. If the teacher requires your submissions for activity-based questions, you won’t be able to go to the next slide until you submit an answer.

Viewing Student Reports

Teachers can view the reports for the lesson, whether it was a live participation session or a student-paced one. Hover over the lesson and then click on the ‘More’ icon (three dots). A menu will open; select ‘Reports’ from it.

presentation view nearpod

The window for reports will open. It will list the reports for all sessions, live and student-paced, of the lesson. Click on the one you want to view.

presentation view nearpod

Nearpod is the tool you need to bring that charm back to your classes and make them so engaging that your students will be always excited to learn. Nearpod even has plans for entire schools or whole districts if your school wants to use this tool to improve the level of education.

What is the tool?

Nearpod is a presentation  tool that allows teachers to design any lesson to be interactive, whether in a face-to-face classroom or an online environment. Teachers can create interactive presentations and activities for their lessons, that include polls, collaboration boards, and game-based quizzes. In addition, teachers can upload Powerpoint or Google Slides, PDFs, and YouTube videos or choose from ready-to-teach, customizable, standards-aligned, premade lessons, videos, and activities.

Nearpod allows the teacher to interact with students through different teaching modes like Live Participation, Student-paced, or Front of Class. Teachers can also engage students by using activities such as polling, quizzing, drawing, fill-in-the-blank, and matching, as well as embedded video, web content, and documents.

Nearpod has a tiered subscription system, starting at a free level and ranging to a school-wide subscription.

What is Nearpod?

Teaching with the Tool

Nearpod is an online presentation and engagement tool that promotes engagement in instructional material and activities and tracks overall student participation. Teachers can create lessons by adding different interactive features to make lessons more engaging and collaborative. Nearpod can be used for:

Live Participation mode : Control the pace of a lesson and let students participate on their own devices in-person or with video conferencing. Student-paced mode : Personalize instruction for individual students, small group assignments, or homework to differentiate and allow students to work at their own pace. Front of Class mode : Watch a video as a class and stop to discuss key instructional moments using premade questions without devices.

Nearpod offers nine types of formative assessments to capture students’ understanding. Teachers can create customized Quizzes, Polls, Open-ended Questions, Matching Pairs, VR Field Trips, PhET Simulations, and more. Instruction can be adapted to  address misconceptions in-the-moment based on feedback from real-time data.

Presentations can be created from scratch in Nearpod, or from existing PowerPoints. Teachers can also choose from  ready-to-teach, customizable, standards-aligned premade lessons, videos, and activities.

Nearpod’s Collaborate Board can be utilized for discussions. Students can type in their thoughts, add a GIF, or upload an image or video onto a virtual note and post it on the board for all to see. Teachers and students can like and comment on the posts as well.

Implementation Process

Nearpod is committed to helping teachers create inclusive learning environments, and make continual improvements to ensure that the platform is accessible. Nearpod uses Immersive Reader to provide text-to-speech, translation, contrast, and additional text accessibility features within a lesson (available in web and iOS app version of Nearpod). For videos uploaded through YouTube that contain created-added captions (within Youtube), those captions will be available when the lesson is taught through Nearpod. To read more about accessibility features click here: Accessibility with Nearpod

During the Nearpod sign-up process teachers may be asked to provide some basic information such as first and last name, email address, school, grade level, password, role, and a profile photo. The use of the Nearpod Materials is subject to this Privacy Policy, the Nearpod Terms and Conditions, and any applicable separate agreement signed between Nearpod and the teacher. Nearpod complies with applicable law, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the CCPA, and SOPPA. Nearpod is a classroom presentation tool used to create interactive presentations and engage audiences with questions that test knowledge, gauge viewpoints, or gather general information. It allows learners to interact with the instructor, with peers, and with content through activities such as polling, quizzing, drawing, fill-in-the-blank, and matching as well as embedded video, web content, and documents.

This integration is in place for students and faculty in the College of Nursing.

There is a limit on the number of students who can attend a live presentation at any one time in the free version of Nearpod. See Nearpod's  notes on sharing  for more information.

Nearpod presentations run on mobile devices using the Nearpod app or from a desktop computer.

How do I get started?

Presentations can be created from scratch in Nearpod, or an existing PowerPoint can be uploaded and enhanced using the tools and activities in Nearpod. Create a free account in Nearpod to get started. You can share a Nearpod presentation with a live audience and control the pace at which they view the presentation, or it can be made available for asynchronous, student-paced access in Carmen or on a website. Nearpod has detailed instructions with screenshots to help you create your first Nearpod presentation.

Can I get participation information from Nearpod?

Nearpod shows you in real time how your audience is responding to quiz and poll questions, short answer questions, and drawing prompts. It also allows them to post sticky notes to a collaborative bulletin board that displays in a web page you can share later on social media or via a URL.

Nearpod produces reports on aggregate audience participation as well as individual reports that connect to SpeedGrader and the Carmen Gradebook. The instructor can then see, from the Carmen Gradebook, who participated in the Nearpod lesson and open each student's participation record in SpeedGrader in order to enter a grade, if desired. Alternatively, the Nearpod lesson can be added to a Module in Carmen if it does not need to be associated with a grade or assignment. Read more about how Nearpod integrates with the CarmenCanvas. .

Student Information

Students do not need to create an account to view Nearpod presentations. They simply enter a five-letter code you provide to them, or they access the presentation from Carmen with no code entry necessary. They can take notes on your presentation directly in their Nearpod interface and send the notes to their email address or save them to a folder in their Google Drive. The student notes include images of each slide with the student's annotations under each slide on a PDF document.

PowerPoints are all the rager.

Gen Z’s idea of “work-life balance” was stifled during the COVID-19 lockdown — and now their parties even feature PowerPoint presentations.

A PowerPoint party is pretty self-explanatory: People get together and show each other PP presentations on a topic of their choosing for “fun.”

The, um, point is for friends to get to know each other’s silly, niche interests and funny thoughts.

Photo of young happy excited happy ladies friends outdoors sitting using laptop computer make winner gesture.

The get-togethers rose in popularity during the pandemic, but they’re still a big hit among Gen Z today — despite utilizing something seen regularly in corporate environments.

Searching for PowerPoint parties on TikTok will bring up an endless stream of examples, with topics including A-list actor Pedro Pascal , “ Things that give me the ick ” and a meta presentation of “guessing what PowerPoint everyone prepared.”

It’s such a common occurrence that Cosmopolitan even put out a list of “55 PowerPoint Night Ideas to Spice Up Your Next at-Home Hang.” Some examples include Disney Channel movie supremacy, the most iconic set of twins in history, and the best chain restaurant and why.

People tend to be quite split on whether they find PowerPoint parties fun.

Group of students or teenagers with laptop and tablet pc computers at home having fun

McCall Mirabella told CNN that she asked all her friends to prepare a PowerPoint for her recent 21st birthday celebration — and she loved it.

“They’re so unserious,” she told the outlet of PP nights she’s attended and hosted. “Most of the time, people are left crying from laughing so hard, or bent over wheezing.”

Others disagree, thinking we should leave the PowerPoints in the office — and not bring them into the home.

“I love my friends, and also I absolutely do not want to do this with any of them,” Emily Stewart of Business Insider wrote about the “weird” craze. “Must we turn something we do at work into something we do in our personal lives? Just hanging out without a plan is fine and pleasant.”

Why Gen Z is so infatuated with PowerPoints as a fun pastime isn’t exactly clear.

Perhaps their work and personal lives are blurred due to remote work, or maybe they’re just used to interacting via technology rather than in person.

7 BREATHTAKING observation decks for spectacular views of Moscow

presentation view nearpod

1. Observation decks at Moscow City

presentation view nearpod

There are two main observation decks in the Moscow City business district. They offer a 360-degree panoramic view of the Russian capital.

The first is located on the 56th floor of the Empire Tower . It can only be accessed with a tour, which takes place every 30 minutes. It is located at a height of 215 meters, occupies an entire floor.

However, the highest observation deck – PANORAMA 360 – is located on the 89th floor of the Federation Tower.  It takes less than a minute to access it by elevator and you can visit it without a tour, but remember to purchase a ticket first!

Presnenskaya Naberezhnaya, 12

2. Ostankino TV Tower

presentation view nearpod

An excursion to the Ostankino TV Tower includes visits to two observation decks: a covered one at a height of 337 meters and an open one at a height of 340 meters. For a long time (until the PANORAMA 360 was opened), Ostankino Tower offered the highest observation point in Moscow. The viewing platforms here offer excellent views of VDNKh, the Botanical Gardens, the Moscow City skyscrapers and many other parts of Moscow.

Once you are here, it’s worth having a drink or something to eat at the café. It has a revolving floor and makes a full circle every 40 minutes!

3. Ivan the Great Bell Tower

presentation view nearpod

Once you are inside the Kremlin, you can climb 137 steps up to the viewing platform at the top of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower , which is 25 meters tall. From the top, you get splendid views of the Cathedral Square inside the Kremlin and the Moskva River embankments.

There is a small observation deck on the rooftop of the newly renovated Central Children's Store in Lubyanka, offering up-close views of central Moscow, including the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, Christ the Savior Cathedral and the city's central streets. You can use the tower viewers installed there to take a closer look at the Kremlin towers or the three-tier gilded inscription under the dome of Ivan the Great Bell Tower. 5. Sparrow Hills

The viewing platform on the steep bank of the Moskva River can be rightly called one of Moscow's main sites. Entrance is free and it offers panoramic views of central Moscow, the Luzhniki stadium and the famous Seven Sisters buildings.

Since 2018, it can also be reached by a cable car from the Luzhniki stadium – the views that you will experience during the ride in the cable car are no less spectacular!

 7. Observation deck at Gorky Park

A walk in Gorky Park would not be complete without a visit to its observation deck situated on the roof of the Main Entrance’s arch. From there you can see many interesting things, and if you make use of the tower viewers, you’ll be able to take a closer look at the park alleys, as well as the Krymsky Bridge, the Seven Sisters buildings and Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Fed Says Progress on Inflation Has Stalled, Keeps Rates Steady

Follow live coverage of the fomc meeting and the jerome powell's speech today..

Last Updated:

The Decision

The Federal Reserve acknowledged stalling progress in bringing down inflation to its 2% goal and opted to hold its benchmark interest rate at current levels.

Furthermore, Fed officials are “prepared to maintain the current target range for the federal funds rate for as long as appropriate,” Chairman Jerome Powell told reporters at the post-meeting press conference.

The central bank also said that it would slow the pace of reducing its balance sheet starting in June. That decision ensures money markets don’t experience an episode of volatility and stress as seen in September 2019, Powell noted.

Markets Continue to Price In Rate Cuts in Fall

Megan Leonhardt

Expectations around when the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates this year shifted only slightly following Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference on Wednesday, indicating that investors’ views had been in line with the bank’s thinking.

The odds of September and November rate cuts improved slightly following the conclusion of the Fed’s policy meeting, prices of interest-rate futures indicate. There is currently a 42.4% probability of the first rate cut coming during the September meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

The CME FedWatch Tool also showed that there are now thin odds of a rate increase at some point during the year.

There was a “collective sigh of relief in the financial markets” after the Fed refrained from increasing its hawkishness dramatically at the May meeting, wrote Jack McIntyre, portfolio manager at Brandywine Global.

“In interpreting the statement in the context of recent macro releases, it is clear that the future path of Fed policy has become more uncertain,” wrote Daniel Murray, deputy chief investment officer and global head of research at EFG Asset Management.

“Futures are now pricing only slightly more than one rate cut this year. While it is not the central view, there is clearly also an increased probability that the Fed has to hike again,” Murray said. That scenario would likely play out if the labor market continues to show strength and inflation remains stubbornly above the bank’s 2% target.

U.S. Economy, Monetary Policy Is Diverging from Other Developed Markets, Powell Says

Nicholas Jasinski

A new phase could be on the way in terms of global monetary policy.

While economies and central banks in developed markets have been on generally the same path for most of the past four years—policymakers sought to boost growth during the pandemic and then took a more restrictive stance to fight inflation afterward—that is likely to change this year. Economic and inflation data for early 2024, plus statements by the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and others, now suggest more divergent central bank policies.

“The difference between the United States and other countries that are now considering rate cuts is that they're just not having the kind of growth we're having,” Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday, while inflation rates abroad may be similar to those in the U.S. or lower.

Strong growth and low unemployment in the U.S. means the Fed has the “luxury,” Powell said, of holding interest rates steady for longer to continue to put downward pressure on inflation. Other central banks may be able to declare victory over inflation sooner than the Fed, but may also have to respond to weakening economic growth sooner.

“We will be careful and cautious as we approach the decision to cut rates, whereas I think other jurisdictions may go before that,” Powell said.

Higher interest rates for longer in the U.S., relative to abroad, are a recipe for a strong dollar. The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the dollar against a basket of other currencies, is up 4.5% so far this year.

As for emerging markets, Powell said that he sees less turmoil than in previous periods of higher Fed interest rates. “I think partly that’s because emerging market countries, many of them have much better monetary policy frameworks, much more credibility on inflation, and they're navigating this pretty well this time,” Powell said.

Unemployment Ticking Above 4% Likely Won’t Trigger Cuts

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday policymakers are ready to spring into action if the U.S. economy, particularly the labor market, experiences a sudden downturn.

But the key words are “unexpected weakening,” and the Fed would likely need to see more than simply the unemployment rate climbing above 4% from its current level of 3.8%.

“It would have to be meaningful and get our attention—and lead us to think that the labor market was really significantly weakening for us to want to react to it,” Powell said.

He added that unemployment increasing by a “a couple of tenths” of a percentage point would probably not do that.

“It would be a broader thing that would suggest that it would be appropriate to consider cutting” interest rates, Powell said. He added that the decision by Fed officials to lower rates depends on all the facts and circumstances, not just that one.
