What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be: 

• Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
• Reference letters 
• Statement of interest/research statement
• English language test scores
• Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants. 

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

Termination

Governing Law

You and TC Global agree that any cause of action arising out of or related to the Service must commence within one (1) year after the cause of action arose; otherwise, such cause of action is permanently barred.

Terms of Use and all other policies available on this Service shall be interpreted and construed in accordance with the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms of Use and/ or other policies available on this App, including any question regarding its existence, validity or termination, shall be referred to and finally resolved by arbitration administered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC") in accordance with the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC Rules") for the time being in force, which rules are deemed to be incorporated by reference in this clause. The Tribunal shall consist of 3 arbitrators. The seat and venue of Arbitration shall be Singapore and the language of proceedings shall be English. Subject to the foregoing, the Courts of Singapore shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes relating to the subject matter, herein.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a dispute arises with respect to the validity, scope, enforceability, inventorship, ownership, infringement, breach or unauthorised use of any patent, trademark, copyright or other intellectual property right or any non-proprietary data owned and/or controlled by TC Global, whether or not arising from the Terms of Use, such dispute (at the option of TC Global) shall not be submitted to arbitration and instead, TC Global shall be free to initiate litigation, including but not limited to a claim for interim injunctive relief, in a court of competent jurisdiction, in any country or other jurisdiction in which such rights apply.

Integration and Severability

These Terms of Use are the entire agreement between you and TC Global with respect to the Service and use of the Site, Service, Content or User Submissions, and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals (whether oral, written or electronic) between you and TC Global with respect to the Site. Will I be welcomed as an international student?

The UK and Canada are both welcoming to international students, with the UK being the second most popular study destination, in terms of the number of international students, and Canada being the fourth.

Both countries have favourable visa policies and a chance for international students to stay after their studies, such as the Post Study work visa for students coming to the UK . 

The UK might be an island, but it is greatly influenced by Europe and the world due to its high level of immigration over the decades, with about 14% of Brits being born overseas. The UK is such a melting pot that the unofficial national dish is curry.

Given the UK is made up of four countries (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland), the culture along with the accent will change every 25 miles. In Wales, they even have their own language, and Welsh is spoken alongside English.

Brits are known to be reserved and their politeness and need to apologize quite a bit, for no apparent reason, is well documented. Irony and sarcasm are heavily used in the humour. How does higher education differ between Canada and the UK?

The UK has over 100 public universities, and 11 are ranked in the top 100 universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education, with the University of Oxford being the world’s best university.

Canada has 90 universities of which 30 appear in world-rankings including the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Though many are high quality, they aren’t as prestigious as some British universities. The highest ranked university in Canada, the University of Toronto, is ranked 18th in the world, according to Times Higher Education.

How long do undergraduate and postgraduate degrees take?

An undergraduate degree in the UK is normally three years long. If you’re in Scotland, it’ll likely be four and most postgraduate programs take one year wherever you are in the UK.

Undergraduate degrees in Canada are usually four years long while postgraduate master’s degrees are a year or two, so you’re likely to be studying longer in Canada vs the UK.

What are the costs of studying in the UK vs Canada?

The average tuition cost in the UK is £12,705 and that excludes your accommodation and living costs. In order to get a better understanding of the total cost of studying in the UK , it is recommended that you research all the additional costs. 

Tuition for international students in Canada is much cheaper than the UK at around £5,855 a year. Your housing plan at a Canadian university might also include a meal plan. Overall, it is typically much cheaper to study in Canada compared to the UK.

How are courses structured?

Courses in the UK are mostly lecture-based, and a lot of your grade will come from exams and assignments. However, science and math students will spend more time in the lab or clinical classes while students in art-based degree programs will be in more discussion-based classes and will be busy creating!

Similarly, Canadian university grades also come from exams and assignments. However, there may be more research-based learning and projects. There are workshops, group projects, and assignments that will all factor into your final grade.

How does the grading differ between Canada and the UK?

The UK grading system uses honours in grades . The highest is first-class honours, which represents 70% or above. But, the lowest is without honours, usually 40% or lower. It’s known as a pass.

Similar to the US, Canada uses letter grades and GPA, or Grade Point Average. GPA is usually on 4.0 scale or sometimes a 9.0 scale. 9.0 represents a perfect grade, and on the 4.0 scale, 4.33 represents a perfect grade.

Can I work whilst I study?

You can work up to 20 hours a week, during term time and an unlimited number of hours outside term time, as an international student in the UK. Once you graduate, you can stay for up to two years working or searching for employment after earning a Post Study Work Visa.

With your visa, you can work 20 hours a week on campus or off campus in Canada. Canada grants post-graduation work permits, which can be between eight months to three years, depending on the length of your studies.  If you earn a higher degree, the length of your work permit is typically longer.

What are the differences in living costs?

One big difference between the UK and Canada is that you will get access to free healthcare in the UK after you pay a surcharge of £150 for each academic year. This payment covers general practitioner visits, emergency treatment, family planning services, compulsory psychiatric treatment and diagnosis and treatment of some diseases, and your medicines will be subsidized by the government. 

Accommodation wise the average cost in the UK is around £1,250 a month and around £1,750 in Canada. You should budget around £150 to £200 for food and groceries in the UK and around £350 to £585 a month in the Ontario area in Canada. Like everywhere the main cities in both countries are the most expensive.

What salary can I expect after graduation?

The average annual salary after graduation in the UK is about £26,345. However, your salary will depend on your degree. In late 2020, the unemployment rate for college graduates in the UK was about 4.6%.

Canada is slightly better, with many graduates earing around $40,000 a year on average. Canada also has better rate of graduate employment and in 2020, the employment rate for Canadians with a Bachelor’s degree was around 70%.

What is there to see, do and visit?

The UK has a maritime climate, so there are plenty of outdoor activities in all seasons and you’re never more than 75 miles from the sea! It’s also pretty easy to travel to other European countries. The UK is a diverse place and each region has its attractions, so whether you like the buzz of cities, picturesque countryside or fancy seeing a castle or two you’ll be catered for!

PhD students from Nigeria can still bring dependents to UK, says British High Commissioner

Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated that although some international students are prohibited from bringing dependents, those enrolled in PhD programs are still allowed to bring dependents into the country.

Montgomery shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

He mentioned that the policy change, which was implemented earlier this year, prohibits international students in higher education from bringing dependents to the UK.

According to him, this decision was made to address the growing issue of many foreign students bringing dependents.

He noted that the unsustainable pressure on numerous universities due to the influx of dependents led to the introduction of these policy changes.

He pointed out that university Chancellors had raised concerns about the large student populations, specifically noting challenges such as limited accommodation, access to medical services through the National Health Service, and schooling for dependents.

Montgomery explained that the restrictions are not universal, highlighting that those pursuing long-term research degrees, such as PhDs or doctorates, are exempt from these limitations.

• “Those coming to the UK for doctorate can still bring their dependency but if you are coming to the UK with a study visa for an undergraduate degree, or short term master’s degree am afraid the rules have been changed.
• “People need to understand why this change was brought in, and it is a sensible change because we have a large higher education sector and most of these universities are in towns across the country.
• “I really like the demand but there are other factors at play in terms of schooling in the UK , the value of the Naira in the coming months will also determine how easy or hard it will be for many people to afford our education.
• “But I really hope that the number of people who bring dependents in UK may actually not be a majority, but a minority of people have tried to study in the UK so am hoping that the demand will be sustained,” he said.
• Earlier in January, Nairametrics reported that The UK government has recently introduced measures to restrict Nigerian and other international students from bringing their families as dependents while studying in the country, except in specific circumstances.
• It stated that these students will no longer be able to bring dependants with them unless they are on postgraduate courses that are currently designated as research programmes.
• The government under the new package said that it also removed the ability for international students to switch out of the student route and into work routes before their studies have been completed “to prevent misuse of the visa system.
• According to Sky News, this was made known by the UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, who said that this is part of the mechanism to reduce net migration.

Google’s Find My Device network seems to be slowly rolling out in the UK and beyond

But you might not have it yet

It's been a long wait for Google ’s Find My Device network , and while the service – which adds Bluetooth tracker compatibility and allows Android owners to track lost phones even when they’re offline – finally launched in early April, it was initially only available in the US and Canada. Now, though, it looks like it's expanding further.

As spotted by Android Authority , some X users have reported getting the service in other countries, with @willza3 claiming to have access in the UK, and @Nrnsasa5gmmwsub saying that they were able to use the Find My Device network in Japan.

Now, Google hasn’t officially said that the network has started rolling out beyond North America yet, but the company did say at launch that the rollout was simply “starting” in the US and Canada, which suggests it should be available elsewhere soon.

Coming soon but slowly

So, while it’s possible that these two users were accidentally given access, there’s a good chance that Google is simply expanding the reach of the Find My Device network slowly, rather than at a pace.

As such, you probably won’t have access yet if you’re outside the US or Canada, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for it in the coming days, as you might do soon.

As for exactly when you’re likely to gain access, well, Android Authority has heard from a spokesperson for Pebblebee – one of the companies making Bluetooth trackers compatible with the network – that these trackers “will be available to ship out globally as early as May 27”, which could mean the Find My Device network will also be active globally by then.

But if Google is gradually rolling it out, then a lot of people might get access before then, and we’d wager that there’s a good chance we’ll hear more about the rollout at Google I/O 2024 on May 14.
