GE5227 Internet GIS
A new paradigm has evolved. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) once considered the state of the art in geographic data handling, analysis and geovisualization are no longer packaged into single desktop based systems. The paradigm has shifted into cloud and mobile platforms and data representations are “mashed up” in web 2.0 applications. New data comes from volunteered geographic information (VGI) available in social media that is far more heterogeneous in its characterization of geography. In contrary, traditional geospatial data originated from authoritative sources. This new paradigm surfaces new questions regarding the production, usage, and sharing of data. Additionally, it also calls for an augmented set of skills for advanced users of geospatial technologies.
In this module we will explore state‐of‐the‐art ways of Internet GIS technologies and spatial theories to map and comprehend activities in virtual and real space. And the intersections between the two. Internet, an integral part of social life also provides students a venue to explore the implications of the digital transformations brought forth by the Internet. The course offers a combination of theory and practice of Internet GIS and the geoweb. We will cover subjects like VGI and how it changes our ideas about spatial data accuracy in terms of theory. In practical lab sessions students will design and develop Geoweb “apps”. The idea is not to learn specific skills, but to ‘learn how to learn’. This will allow students to anticipate innovations in geospatial technologies. This would also allow students to adapt to geospatial technologies that are ever-changing enabled by the technological landscape of internet.
