Research Scholars spend their work time producing novel research. They read about the latest advances in their area, propose and experiment with novel ideas, critically analyse their results, and publish and present their findings at highly selective international conferences and journals for peer-review and information dissemination. While doing so, they develop, under the apprenticeship of their faculty supervisors, skills for critical reading, ideation, experimental design, implementation, analysis, synthesis, writing, and communication. Many Research Scholars also help their faculty supervisors in informally guiding Master’s and Bachelor’s students on smaller projects, write proposals for research funding, and actively pursue collaborations with other research groups from around the world. PhD students are expected to take their own initiative and transition to become independent researchers over the course of time. To obtain a PhD, the Research Scholars have to publish their research in reputed journals and conferences, and produce a PhD thesis (dissertation).

PhD studies is also a time to develop a well-rounded personality by pursuing extra-curricular activities. Mumbai provides a cosmopolitan and metropolitan lifestyle, being the financial capital of India, with its experience of diverse cultures, cuisines, and industries. Most students can find accommodation in one of the hostels of the IIT Bombay campus. There are also studio apartments available for married students. The campus is well-equipped with numerous sports facilities and it has numerous student interest clubs.  .

The overall process for a successful Ph.D. includes completing the required coursework, qualifying, annual progress seminars, pre-synopsis, synopsis, provisional acceptance of the dissertation, dissertation defense, and final submission of the dissertation.

International students

Limited seats are available for international students to pursue a Ph.D. at IIT Bombay. More information for international students can be found below.

PhD Program

PhD in Design

Scholarly research is an important cornerstone that distinguishes professions from trades. Research and practice-oriented disciplines, like design, grow and remain relevant only if their professionals constantly contribute to and expand this body of knowledge.

Our Doctor of Philosophy in Design invites design practitioners and teachers, aspiring design researchers and experienced professionals with a passion for design — to proactively engage with and build into this growing body of design research. It urges introspective designers with years of practical experience to validate and formalize theories, tools and techniques within the scholarly framework. And encourages research in the fertile fields where design intersects with science, humanities, arts, and education.

To pursue a PhD here, your research must match our Faculty's areas of interest . As a first step, go through these and contact the concerned faculty to develop your proposed research.

If you meet the eligibility criteria and there is an opening for your area of research, you may complete the formalities of application through the IITB Admission Portal.

The commitment for our PhD is long term requiring a minimum of 3 to 4 years. Apart from strong commitment, you require good analytical abilities, excellent language skills, tenacity, self-motivation, and open-mindedness, along with humility and a willingness to learn.

Additional Information:

Course Work and Minimum CPI

The course requirement for a student joining PhD programme with M Tech/ME or equivalent or master’s degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, or equivalent as qualifying degree will be 2 courses and one seminar. Thus, the minimum credit requirement for such students would be 16.

Students joining PhD programme with B. Tech./B.E. or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, or related disciplines or M.Sc. or M.A as qualifying degree need to complete minimum of 44 credits. However, in view of Rule 4.2 (of rules and regulations of PhD programme), the minimum credit requirement in case of students with M.Sc./M.A. or equivalent as qualifying degree may be reduced to 34 with the approval of CPGC up on the recommendation of the supervisor.

Every PhD student must maintain a minimum CPI of 7.0 in the course work to continue in the PhD programme.

For the confirmation of a candidate’s PhD registration, a two-stage qualifier as per the following details is recommended.

Stage-1: The “credit seminar” will form Stage-1. This should be completed before the end of the first semester of joining. The credit seminar should be oriented towards formulation of the research proposal. It should include identification of the research topic and its importance, literature review and appraisal of current state-of-the-art, gaps in the area and motivation of the proposed work.

The panel of examiners for credit seminar evaluation should involve at least two faculty members in addition to the supervisor. If the grade earned is BC or less, then the candidate should be asked to repeat the seminar again within 3 months. This repeat seminar will not have any credits associated with it; however, if found unsatisfactory then the candidate should be given a final warning that the next stage i.e., PhD Qualifier Examination would be the last chance for continuation of PhD. These inputs will be passed on to the PhD Qualifier Committee.

Stage-2 : A “PhD Qualifier Examination” will form the Stage-2 of the qualifier. This should be conducted before the end of the second semester of joining. This PhD Qualifier Examination will be a oral examination conducted for evaluation of candidate’s aptitude towards carrying out the proposed research work. The knowledge of the candidate in the basic subject areas of the proposed research will be tested by the examiners in the PhD Qualifier Examination. The examination board for this will be named as “PhD Qualifier Committee” consisting of the research supervisor of the candidate and two relevant subject experts. The constitution of this committee needs to be approved by Centre PGC,

If the PhD Qualifier Examination is unsatisfactory and the candidate has cleared the Stage-1 in 1 st attempt, then the candidate should be asked to give repeat PhD Qualifier Examination within 3months. This repeat PhD Qualifier Examination would be the last chance for continuation of PhD.

If the PhD Qualifier Examination is unsatisfactory and the candidate has cleared the Stage-1 in 2 nd attempt then the candidate will have to discontinue. There will not be any repeat PhD Qualifier Examination in this case.

The confirmation of the PhD program should be done after successful completion of the above two stages of assessment. The entire process of confirmation (i.e., course work and qualifier) should be completed within a maximum time of 1 year 3 months from the date of joining of the Ph.D. scholar.

*Phd Qualifier Requirement for students converting from MTech program to PhD

MTech student should have minimum BB or more in seminar and CPI of 7 or more in coursework for conversion into MTech – PhD dual degree programme. Such students have to clear only the stage 2 qualifier examination for confirmation of their registration. The student must appear for PhD qualifier examination within 6 months of the date of conversion from MTech to PhD and should complete it within a maximum period of 9months from the date of conversion.

IEOR offers a Ph.D. degree for students with M.Tech./ B.Tech./ B.E./ M.Sc. entering (qualifying) degree who gain admission and satisfy the requirements of the programme.  The Ph.D. programme is also available for students post B.Sc. in Mathematics or Statistics, through the JAM exam, as part of a  dual degree M.Sc-Ph.D, programme . Graduates of the Ph.D. programme demonstrate their ability to make original and significant contributions in the field of IEOR through their dissertation work.

The academic programme leading to the Ph.D. degree involves course-credit requirements and research work culminating in a dissertation.

Course-credit requirements & PhD registration

The student's qualification-wise (i.e., based on entering degree) credit requirements to be decided and administered by the IEOR IDPC, subject to minimum course credit requirements as prescribed by the Institute norms.

  • Students with qualifying degree as MTech or equivalent may be recommended up to 42 credits of coursework (excl. Seminar), depending on the student’s qualifying (entering) degree and prior coursework. If the recommended credits are more than 24 credits, then the student can take up to 2 semesters to complete the credit requirements.
  • Students with qualifying degree as BTech or MSc or equivalent may be recommended up to 56 credits of coursework (excl. Seminar), depending on their qualifying (entering) degree and prior coursework. The credit-requirement to be completed in the first 2 semesters.
  • All students to also do (i) IES801 Seminar course, and (ii) IExxx Communication Skills course as part of the credit requirements.

The proposed set of courses are to be identified in consultation with the faculty advisor , as part of the PhD registration process, at the time of joining the programme. The same to be submitted to IEOR IDPC for approval before registration.

Ph.D. Confirmation and Comprehensive Exam

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, the PhD registration will be confirmed, subject to the following requirements. The details of these PhD Qualifier requirements can be found here .

Grade requirements for Ph.D confirmation (This is applicable for PhD students of 2021-22 batch onwards): The students need to maintain a CPI of at least 7.00 at any time during the course of their PhD to continue the Ph.D. This will include all the prescribed coursework, including Seminar. Students may apply for one chance to take additional courses in subsequent semesters to clear this requirement, if applicable.

Comprehensive Exam for Ph.D confirmation : All students have to clear the comprehensive exam to qualify for Ph.D.

The grade requirement and comprehensive exam are independent requirements. Both need to be satisfied for confirmation of PhD registration.

Supervisor(s), Research Progress Committee and Annual Progress Seminar

Ph.D. students are encouraged to interact with all faculty members, and based on their research interest, sign up with any faculty as their PhD Supervisor. Joint or Co-Supervision is also possible. In consultation with his/her Supervisor, the Research Progress Committee (RPC) is to be setup. Details of these too are to be submitted along with the PhD Confirmation form.

The Annual Progress Seminar (APS) is an annual review of the student’s research progress by the RPC. The first APS is held in the 3rd semester (1 year) from joining.

Research work

The candidate eventually submits to the Institute a Thesis which will be judged by a panel of experts (both from IIT-B and outside) for "its contribution to advancement of knowledge."

Periodic dissemination of their findings in conferences, academic journals and factoring in the feedback of peer community is encouraged. Placement after completion of the programme is strongly influenced by this activity.

Scholarships and Support

The Institute TA scholarship is for a period of 5 years. This is the duration within which Ph.D. students should normally attempt to finish their requirements and submit their thesis.

Students admitted with scholarships (UGC-FA; IITB-Monash Academy) will be governed by the rule of those scholarships.
