How to Write a Speech About Someone I Admire

Kimberley McGee

Tips on Writing a Welcome Address at a High School Graduation

It is an honor to be asked or to be able to write a speech about someone that you admire. When the task is to write a speech, it can feel like a daunting endeavor, particularly when the subject is someone you look up to or who had a large impact on your life. Whether it is for an award ceremony or a school assignment, family reunion or wedding anniversary, cobbling together a compelling speech about someone you admire can be a moving moment as well as an enjoyable experience.

Getting Started on Speech Writing

Before you reach for all the words, begin with just a few. Create an outline that will touch on your key points. Consider the person and jot down what comes to mind when you concentrate on the individual as well as how he or she has made an impact on you and others. If it is a family member, reach into the past and showcase some of his or her early experiences.

Once you have a relatively rough outline of what you hope to touch on, write your introduction. The introduction sets the tone and grabs your audience. Some ways to craft an attention-grabbing introduction is to start with a question, a well-known joke or anecdote. Make sure it is something that the entire audience can understand.

Person I Admire Speech Body Basics

When writing a speech about someone you admire, turn your attention not only to the person, but accomplishments, inflections of speech or other personal traits. There are two objectives when giving a speech, to make a good impression and leave the audience with a clear and informative understanding of your subject. Consider your audience before sitting down to write your speech. The missive should reflect the occasion, either light and jovial or stern and touching. Focus your audience’s attention on the main facts quickly by giving a preview in the opening descriptive paragraph. Establish goodwill from the beginning and grab the crowd’s attention with a pithy turn of phrase or poignant piece of literature.

Reach Out for Inspiration

Look at an example of a speech about someone who was admired for speech writing tips. Comedian and actress Maya Rudolph gave a gripping commencement speech in 2015 that focused on people that she admired. These included her family as well as people she admired in the industry, including Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce. If you need moments of inspiration while you are writing your speech about someone you admire, turn to those who have gone before you. Studying compelling speeches can help you understand how to convey emotion and impact through your carefully chosen words. If you are writing about family members, ask those who have given speeches in the past for encouragement.

The Person I Admire The Most Essay

100 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

The person I admire the most is my sister. She is an inspiration to me. She motivates me to do things that I am not sure about. She takes care of me and supports me whenever I need her. She has achieved so much at such a young age. Her attitude, patience, and confidence really inspire me a lot. She does everything in such a perfect way and never complains about her responsibilities. She is such an inspiration to me that I try to infuse her values within me. She is a person who motivates me every time I need her.

200 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

When asked about a particular person, I admire the most, a lot of names come across my mind. These include my mother, sister, father, and even a few celebrities' names come to my mind. I can proudly tell that the person I admire is my grandmother. She is a woman to be looked upon. She is a great lady who has not only given enough to her home as well as to the world. She is a superwoman who handles her work beautifully simultaneously with her family. For people, Wonder Woman is Gal Gadot, but for me, Wonder Woman is my grandmother.

Why My Grandmother Is My Hero

My grandmother secured a gold medal at her graduation. She was the first female officer in the Audit General Office all over the Northeast. She is also a poet, writer, and novelist. Her work is being published, and it is getting all the love from its readers. She has also done much social work. Due to her social work, she still gets immense love from people. She inspires me a lot. She teaches me it does not matter if you are a girl or a boy, if you have the will to do a particular task you can do it. I still have a lot to learn from her, and I will continue admiring her.

500 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

We all have someone or another whom we admire the most. The person I admire the most is Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli - the Person I Admire The Most

Virat Kohli is considered one of the most successful international cricketers, and I try to imbibe some of his virtues that will help them succeed in life. Virat has always inspired me with supremacy, success, and class in his game. Regardless of the team's situation during the match, Virat always tries to finish the game with self-determination, bravery, talent, and the ability to win.

I also try to succeed in my studies by drawing inspiration from his personality traits. What made Virat Kohli a youth icon is his passion for playing cricket and winning matches for his country. His commitment to his game is no longer a hidden fact. Virat has amassed runs in his successful career due to his involvement in match runs as he does not hand wickets easily to bowlers.

Why I Admire Virat Kohli

I still remember the Ipl season of 2016 when he scored 973 in a single tournament. He shocked everyone that it is possible for a man to be so good at a craft. He had stitches in his hands despite that he made a brilliant century. This day opened my eyes that we can do it whatever may be the circumstances. That day he became an idol for me. He showed that our interest comes secondary to that of the team's interest. It is one such instance of why I love him so much.

Virat Kohli: An Inspiration

His professionalism inspires me to pursue my goals regardless of the circumstances. Virat Kohli is a fitness icon in the sports world, and athletes and their fans look up to him for his fitness. His commitment towards fitness teaches me the value of healthy living and fitness. Self-discipline and practice are the most important aspects of his personality. To master his game, Virat practised more and more to succeed.

Having firmly established himself in every format among many fierce rivals, Kohli is undoubtedly one of the crowning jewels of Indian cricket. Virat Kohli is a symbol of passion and dedication.

A source of inspiration to the youngster, he is a disciplined batsman and was a prolific captain who had led the Indian side to success under his captaincy. His never giving attitude really makes me his fan. He has always motivated me and showed me the ray of hope that with passion everything can be achieved. He is an inspiration to millions including me. His infused values will remain forever in me and he will continue to be my idol.

Therefore we all have someone or the other who makes our love worth living. One who teaches us that the sky's the limit and one who always pushes us to go out of our comfort zone. They are the people who teach us to be the best version of ourselves and we should always hold onto these people and learn from them.

Speaking skills: A person you admire

Rich admires Manchester Utd's Antonio Valencia.

In this week's Premier Skills English Podcast, Jack and Rich talk about the backgrounds of some Premier League players and Rich talks about one player that he admires. Then, we ask you to tell us about someone you admire. The language focus is on the words 'for', 'since' and 'ago' and how we can use them to talk about time. We also focus on vocabulary connected to personality and look at how we use adjectives and nouns to talk about different personality characteristics. As always, we also have a new football phrase for you to guess. Enjoy!

Jack : What are you reading, Rich?

Rich : I’m reading this book about where footballers come from. It’s really interesting.

Jack : Footballers come from all over the world, that’s a photo of Yaya Toure, isn’t it?

Rich : Yes, yes it is.

Jack : Wasn’t he born in Ivory Coast?

Rich : Yep. It’s a really good read. Did you know that his two brothers were professional footballers, too?

Jack : I did. Kolo played for Liverpool and Arsenal.

Rich : It’s a really good book. I’ll lend it to you when I’ve finished it.

Welcome - Someone you admire

Rich : Hello my name’s Rich

Jack : and I’m Jack

Rich : and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast

Jack : Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack : What’s happening this week, Rich?

Rich : In this week’s podcast, we’re talking about famous people you admire. We’re going to talk about someone that we admire and we’re going to ask you to tell us about someone that you admire.

Jack : And we’re going to look at the words; since, for and ago.

Rich : We also have a set of adjectives for you to learn. The adjectives are all connected to positive characteristics.

Jack : So, the key word in this podcast is to admire. I think we should start by looking at this word in a bit more detail.

Rich : To admire means to respect someone because of something they have done or for their personal qualities.

Jack : I admire doctors and firefighters who work in dangerous situations. They are brave or courageous because they put their own lives at risk to help others.

Rich : Yes, I also have a lot of admiration for doctors and firefighters. But, admiration, doesn’t always have to be about something as important as life and death. For example, I admire footballers like James Milner at Liverpool and N’golo Kante at Chelsea. I admire them because they are tenacious - they never give up - they always give 100%.

Jack : Yes, Kante is not very tall and when he was younger lots of clubs didn’t give him a chance. But, he never gave up and look at him now!

Rich : There’s a section on N’golo Kante in this book I’m reading. I’m going to talk about one player I admire in the next section.

Topic Focus

Jack : Rich, you’ve already mentioned N’Golo Kante and Yaya Toure. Who else have you read about in that book?

Rich : There’s a section on Jamie Vardy.

Jack : Everyone knows that story! It’s a good story though. He was working in a factory just a few years ago and now he’s a Premier League Champion. There’s going to be a Hollywood movie about it.

Rich : Alright, well, there are lots of other interesting stories, too. Did you know that there are quite a few footballers that arrived in the UK as asylum seekers?

Jack : I know about Saido Berahino. He plays for Stoke now and he arrived from Burundi as a child.

Rich : Victor Moses at Chelsea came to the UK as an asylum seeker, too. And there are a few other footballers who were refugees when they were kids - like Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren who had to escape the war in Bosnia in the 1990s. Jack: Who are you reading about at the moment?

Rich : Antonio Valencia

Jack : Ah ...  The Manchester United player.

Rich : Yes, he has an interesting background, too. He grew up in poverty and now well ... I don’t think he needs to worry about money anymore.

Jack : Why do you admire him?

Rich : I’ve always admired him as a player because I think he’s really hardworking on the pitch. Like Kante and Milner I mentioned earlier. But now that I’ve read more about him I admire him even more.

Jack : He’s from Ecuador, isn’t he?

Rich : Yes, he is. He was born in a very poor, small town in the north-east of Ecuador 31 years ago. Valencia has said in interviews that kidnapping is a big problem in his hometown and one of the first things he did when he had enough money was to move his family to Quito - the capital.

Jack : He must have had an amazing journey - from there to Old Trafford!

Rich : As a kid, he used to play football barefoot - without any boots or socks. And he used to sell drinks outside a stadium with his mum and then after the match would look for empty plastic bottles that his family could sell for a little bit of money.

Jack : How did he find a club?

Rich : He didn’t play on a football pitch until he was 11 years old. And then, when he was 16, he was spotted by a scout and asked to play in Quito the capital. He didn’t tell his dad because he wanted him to finish his studies. His mum gave him the money for the bus ticket and said goodbye.

Jack : That’s really brave to leave home at just 16.

Rich : Yes, I think it shows real courage. Everything that I’ve read about Valencia is that he’s very determined and ambitious, too. He played in the capital for three years, and then, when he was just 19, he moved to Spain on his own.

Jack : Wow! That must have been difficult.

Rich : It wasn’t a great success and he only stayed in Spain for one year but Valencia was determined. He didn’t return home - he moved to England to play for Wigan. He has been living in the UK since 2006 - for over 10 years.

Jack : Ecuador to Wigan! I imagine that was a culture shock!

Rich : Yes, the book tells one story of Valencia being very shy and not being able to speak English or read Spanish but he also showed how independent and self-reliant he was. Within three days he had bought a car and rented a house by himself.

Jack : And he plays for Manchester Utd now - one of the biggest football clubs in the world!

Rich : He moved to Manchester Utd 8 years ago and has played over 200 times for the club, won the Premier League twice and has been captain of his country since 2014. I think his story is a good one and the qualities I admire most about him are probably his courage, his determination and his independence.

Jack : Yes, I agree, it’s a great story. Now, we want you to start thinking about a person you admire. It can be a footballer but it could also be another famous person or someone in your family or someone you know.

Rich : After you listen to the next section we want you to tell us about this person in the comments section including some of the language we are going to talk about now.

Language Focus

Jack : Let’s look at some of the language we used in that last section. We’re going to look at three words; for, since and ago.

Rich : All these words are used to talk about time. But we use them in slightly different ways.

Jack : Let’s look at ago first. We use ago to talk about something that happened at a specific time in the past. Rich ‘When did you leave the UK to go and live in Spain?’

Rich : Good question. About 10 years ago. I moved to Spain about 10 years ago.

Jack : When we use ago we talk in the past. We use the past simple in the example that Rich used in the last section. He said ‘He was born 31 years ago’.

Rich : Let’s move onto the next word since. We use since to talk about when something started in the past.

Jack : When we use since we usually use the present perfect. Rich, ‘How long have you lived in Spain?’

Rich : Erm ... since 2007.  I’ve lived in Spain since 2007.

Jack : You can see that Rich used the present perfect here. This is because he’s talking about something that started in the past; Rich moved to Spain, and hasn’t finished. Rich still lives in Spain today.

Rich : Also remember that we use since to show a starting point in time. So, the starting point could be a year like 2007, or a time, or month or an event. You could say I’ve been doing this since 2007, since 6 ’o'clock, since May, or since my birthday.

Jack : One example from the earlier section was ‘Antonio Valencia has been captain of his country since 2014.’

Rich : The third word we want to look at is ‘for’. We use for to talk about a period of time.

Jack : Rich, ‘How long have you been living in Spain?’

Rich : For about 10 years. I’ve been living in Spain for 10 years.

Jack : Rich said for 10 years. That’s the period of time. The period of time could be ten minutes, ten days, ten centuries whatever. Be careful with the pronunciation. When we use for as a preposition, it’s pronounced Fe, not for like the number.

Rich : You might have noticed that I used the present perfect in this example but for can be used in other tenses, too. For example, Antonio Valencia played in the capital for three years.

Jack : If you want to practise this a little more, we’ve got some activities to help you further down the page.

Rich : We also used lots of vocabulary earlier and we’ve got some activities to help you with that, too so don’t forget to have a look.

Can you work out this week’s football phrase?

Rich : Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack : Yes, I have, but first, last week’s football phrase. The phrase was  ‘memorabilia’.

Rich : Memorabilia is the stuff you collect that is connected to a famous person, an interesting place or activity. Jack collects football memorabilia. Old things connected to football. Old match programmes, coins and medals that kind of thing.

Jack : Well done to Liubomyr and Violinka from Ukraine, Elghoul from Algeria, Mon from Egypt, Anhduongspurs, and phhchoung123 from Vietnam, dvd023 from Spain, Emir from Bosnia, Ahmed Adam from Sudan, and Kwesimanifest from Ghana. You all got the right answer!

Rich : So, what’s this week’s football phrase, Jack?

Jack : This week’s phrase is **** *****. This is a difficult phrase to know. On the first of July the football season officially ends and many players are out of contract. This means that their contracts with their clubs officially end and they can sign for any other club and their previous club doesn’t receive a transfer fee. These players are called **** ****** and clubs like to buy them because they’re cheaper.

Rich : That is a difficult one. Let’s see if anybody can get it right. Maybe we’ll put a few clues in the comments section if nobody gets it.

Jack : Right, that’s all we have time for this week! Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions and make a guess at our football phrase in the comments below.

Rich : Bye for now and enjoy your football!

How much did you understand?

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used lots of adjectives connected to personality that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

Everything that I've read about Antonio Valencia tells me that he is very determined and ambitious .
Valencia was very shy and not able to speak English but he also showed how independent and self-reliant he was .

There were a few more tricky adjectives in the podcast. Did you know what they all meant? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

For, Since and Ago

All three of these words are used to talk about time in different ways.

For  is used to describe a period of time such as a number of minutes, days or years etc. For  can be used when we are talking about the present, past or the future. Take a look at this example from the podcast:

Antonio Valencia played in the capital (Quito) for three years.

Since  is used to describe a point in time in the past. This point could be a year (2012), a month (May), a time (6 o' clock), or an event (my birthday, last season) etc.  Since  is generally used with the present perfect to talk about something that started in the past and continues in the present. Take a look at this example from the podcast:

Antonio Valencia has been captain of his country since 2014.

Ago  is used to describe something that happened at a specific point in time in the past. When we use  ago  we talk in the past and we usually use the past simple. Take a look at this example from the podcast:

Antonio Valencia was born 31 years ago .

In this week's podcast, Rich and Jack used a few examples of for, since and ago.  In this activity, take a look at one section from the podcast and try to put the correct word in each gap.

Antonio Valencia was very poor as a child in Ecuador. He is now captain of his country.

Nouns and Adjectives

Earlier, you looked at ten adjectives to describe positive characteristics. Many of these adjectives were taken from this week's podcast. All ten adjectives can also be used as nouns. Look at these sentences from the podcast:

I think firefighters are courageous because they work in dangerous situations. One of the qualities I admire most about Antonio Valencia is his courage .

In the first example the adjective (courageous) is used but in the second sentence, we need to use the noun (courage) because we are not describing the person directly; we are talking about the quality. All ten of the adjectives we looked at in activity 1 can be changed into nouns. Do you think you know all ten? In this activity, take a look at the words and decide if they are adjectives or nouns.

Jamie Vardy was determined to get to the Premier League! He was working in a factory a few years ago!

Who do you admire?

In the podcast, Rich spoke about Antonio Valencia - a footballer who he admires. Can you remember the definition of admire ?

Admire means to respect someone because of what they have done or a personal quality that he/she has.

The noun is admiration and the definition is:

Admiration is the feeling of respect that you have for someone because of what they have done or a personal quality that they possess.

We would like you to tell us about a person that you admire. This person can be a footballer, a sports person, a celebrity, a politician, someone in your family or someone you know. We want to know:

  • Where does this person come from? What is his/her background?
  • What positive qualities does this person have?
  • What has this person done to earn your admiration? Why do you admire this person?

We would like you to write about this person in the comments section below. We like you to try and use some of the language (for, since, ago) and vocabulary (determined/determination) that you have studied in this lesson. We would also like you to respond to other user's comments and tell them what you know about the people that other users write about.

Rich - The Premier Skills English Team

Yes, U R right teacher, R!ch. He's the sportsman of the century, If I'm not mistaken.

He earned my admiration when payed about 700,000$ from his own pocket to save a mosque in Seville from being destroyed by the government. He also set up a series of Halal restaurants in Europe for Muslims and always does work for charity. He refuses to eat in Ramadan despite the league being on it's peak. He is determind, hard-working and humble, I admire him because of the work he does off the pitch rather than his work on the pitch.

I admire the Malian striker Fredrick Kanoute who was born 39 years ago in France. He started his professional career at Ligue A side Olympique Lyon in 1997. After that he joined the Hummers then Spurs in the Premier League. But his best moments were when playing for La Liga side Seville, winning two UEFA Cups (now Europa League) in a row, one UEFA Super Cup, Two Copa del Rey titles and one Super Copa de Espana. He has been playing for them for 7 years, becoming the club's highest scoring foreign player. He also won African Footballer of the Year in 2007, being the first player not born in Africa to have won it. He had an emotional farewell when the fans of FC Seville sang him (Oh Kanoute), a song of his own, then he moved to China in 2012. Since he retired in 2013, his news has been cut off.

  • Person you Admire

IELTS Cue Card Speaking Part 2 with Sample Answer:

person i admire presentation

Describe someone in your family who you really admire.

You should say:

  •  what relation this person is to you
  •  what are your first memories of this person
  •  how frequently you see this person

and explain why you really admire this person.

Sample Answer 1: My Father

Sample Answer, C1 English Level, Advanced, Band Score 6.5-7.5

I hold great love and respect for every member of my family, and while it is challenging to single out just one person, my father is the one I hold in highest regard. Our bond dates back to my earliest memories, and he is the one I trust most and confide in without hesitation. That’s not to say he’s been a perfect role model; he’s had his share of flaws, just like anyone else. But I’ve always looked up to him for several reasons.

First and foremost, my father possesses a wealth of wisdom. He has a profound comprehension of the world and is the go-to person in our family when anyone seeks advice. His life experiences have led him to impart invaluable guidance that has steered me towards the right path and taught me to hold my head high.

The second trait that I deeply admire in my father is his unflappable demeanor, even in the most trying of times. His tact and serenity in the midst of turmoil leave me in awe. I have learned from him to keep my emotions in check during challenging situations, but it’s still an ongoing process, and I have a long way to go to be like him.

Last but not least, my father has always been affectionate and attuned to our needs. He’s never indulged us in any way, but he’s always been there to lend his unwavering support when we’ve faced obstacles. What sets him apart is his approach; he’s never been pushy, despite teaching us discipline and good manners.

All in all, my father is such a  remarkable person that I cannot fathom where I’d be without him.

I have love and respect for everyone in my family, and it’s difficult to choose someone who I admire the most, but if I had to pick one, it would definitely be my father. Since childhood, I have always felt a strong bond with him. He is the person I truly trust and can share everything with. I’m not saying he was a perfect role model for me; everyone has their flaws, and so does my father. However, I have always looked up to him for a few reasons.

First, my father is a man of great wisdom. He has a deep understanding of things, and he is the person everyone in our family turns to when they are seeking advice. With his precious life experiences, he has guided me to the right path so that I can hold my head high and stand on my own feet.

The second personality trait of my father that I truly admire is his ability to remain calm in stressful situations. I am always astonished by his tact and serenity in the midst of trouble and chaos. I have learned from him not to allow my emotions to get in the way during difficult times although I still find it hard to maintain my composure at such times, and I think I’ve got a long road ahead of me to be just like him.

Finally, my father has always been affectionate and incredibly attentive to our needs. Not that he has spoiled his children in any way, of course, but he has always lent us strong support when we ran into issues. What I particularly like about him is that even though he has taught us discipline and good manners, he has never acted like a pushy father.

Overall, my father is such a magnificent person that I cannot imagine where I would be without him.

I have deep admiration and profound respect for every member of my family. Nonetheless, if I had to choose one, it would undoubtedly be my father, with whom I have shared a strong bond since my childhood. He is the person I trust the most and with whom I feel comfortable sharing everything. Although he is not a perfect role model, I have always held him in high esteem for several reasons.

Firstly, my father is a man of great wisdom, possessing a profound understanding of various matters. He is the person that everyone in our family turns to when seeking advice. With his life experiences, he has skillfully guided me along the right path, instilling in me a sense of self-reliance and resilience.

Secondly, my father possesses a remarkable ability to maintain his composure and serenity in high-stress situations, an attribute that never ceases to amaze me. His tactful and collected nature during times of trouble and chaos has taught me the value of not allowing emotions to interfere with decision-making, a skill I have yet to fully master.

Finally, my father has always been a loving and attentive provider, always offering strong support whenever we faced difficulties, without spoiling us. While he instilled in us discipline and good manners, he never acted like an overbearing or pushy father, an attribute I genuinely appreciate.

In conclusion, my father is such a remarkable and inspiring figure in my life that I shudder to think where I would be without him.

Sample Answer 2: My Mother

One of the most admirable people in my family is my mother. She is a person who has always been there for me and has played an enormous role in shaping me into the person I am today.

My mother is my biological mother and has been a constant presence in my life since I was born. My earliest memories of her are of her singing lullabies to me and reading me bedtime stories. She was always so patient and kind, and I always felt safe and loved in her presence.

Even though I don’t live with my mother anymore, I still see her quite frequently. We speak on the phone almost every day and make sure to see each other in person at least once a month. I truly cherish the time I get to spend with her, and I know that she feels the same way.

There are a few reasons why I deeply admire my mother. Firstly, she’s an incredibly hardworking person. She has always been a role model to me when it comes to work ethic and determination. She has never let anything stand in her way, and she always puts 100% effort into everything she does.

Secondly, my mother is also an incredibly kind and compassionate person. She has always been the first person to lend a helping hand or to offer words of encouragement when I need it. Her compassion extends not just to her family, but also to everyone she encounters in her life.

Finally, my mother is an incredibly strong person. She has faced many challenges in her life, but she has never let them defeat her. Instead, she has faced them head-on and come out stronger on the other side. Her strength is an inspiration to me, and it gives me the courage to face my own challenges.

Overall, my mother is such a magnificent lady that I’ll always look up to her as a role model.

I really look up to my mother, who is a strong and influential figure in my life. She has taught me many valuable things, and I consider her my closest friend. From my earliest memories, my mother has always been there for me, taking care of me and making sure I was happy. As I grew older, she became my confidant and advisor, always ready to offer guidance and support whenever I needed it.

My mother and I live together, so we spend a lot of time together, chatting about everything. Even when we are busy, we make sure to prioritize spending time with each other. There are three things that I admire about my mother. First, she is extremely hardworking, always making sure that our family has everything we need. She takes pride in keeping our home clean and organized, and still manages to make time for her hobbies like reading and gardening.

Second, my mother is a very kind and empathetic person, always looking for ways to help others. She volunteers her time and resources to various charitable organizations and has taught me to be kind to everyone, regardless of their background or situation.

Last, my mother is a wise and intelligent person, with a wealth of life experience. She has always been a source of valuable advice and taught me important life lessons, like patience, respect, and perseverance. I admire her strength and resilience and aspire to be like her.

To sum up, my mother is such a remarkable woman that I will always cherish her.

The person I admire most in my family is undoubtedly my mother. Throughout my life, she has consistently been a strong role model for me and has taught me numerous invaluable lessons. Above all else, my mother is my closest friend and confidant, and I hold her in the highest regard.

From my earliest memories, my mother has always been an unwavering presence in my life. I recall her taking care of me as a child, reading me stories at bedtime, singing soothing lullabies, and ensuring my happiness and comfort. As I grew older, my mother became my trusted advisor, someone I could always turn to for guidance and support.

As we reside in the same household, I interact with my mother frequently. We enjoy spending time together, engaging in lively conversations and sharing our thoughts on a variety of subjects. Despite our busy schedules, we always make time for one another, and I have no doubt that I can depend on her to be there for me whenever I need her.

There are three primary reasons why I hold my mother in such high esteem. First and foremost, she is exceptionally hardworking, always striving to provide for our family and ensuring that we lack nothing. She takes immense pride in maintaining a clean and organized household, and despite her rigorous schedule, she makes time for her hobbies, which include reading and gardening.

Secondly, my mother possesses a deep sense of compassion and empathy. Her kind heart and willingness to assist those in need are truly remarkable. She is actively involved in several charitable organizations and contributes her time and resources to help others. My mother has instilled in me the importance of treating everyone with kindness, irrespective of their background or circumstances, and I am grateful for that valuable lesson.

Last but not least, my mother is an exceptionally wise and intelligent person, with a wealth of life experience. She has consistently been a valuable source of advice and wisdom, teaching me the significance of patience, respect, and perseverance in pursuing my dreams. I admire her strength and resilience, and I aspire to emulate her in every way possible.

In conclusion, my mother is such a great source of love, support, and inspiration in my life that I will always treasure her as my role model and closest friend.

A person you admire

Powered by RedCircle

Hello and welcome to Learn English Vocabulary. My name is Jack and I’m making this podcast for you to learn or revise English vocabulary. You can find a transcript of this podcast on LearnEnglishVocabulary.co.uk. There’s a page for this podcast with the transcript, an activity and a task for you to do in the comments section.

Today, I want to talk about people I admire. You see, a little while ago, I made a podcast about negative adjectives , adjectives you can use to describe people you don’t like and I thought I should make a podcast that focuses on positive characteristics . So I’m going to focus on adjectives that you can use to describe people you like, adjectives you can use to describe a person’s character and not their appearance.

I’m going to present this language in five short interviews. In each interview, I’m going to be answering questions about a person I admire. The verb admire has two main meanings. The first means to find something attractive to look at. So you might admire a friend’s new car or perhaps on a trip to Rome, you admire the architecture and all the historic buildings. However, if you admire a person, it means you respect them and like the way they behave. The five people I want to talk about today are all people I respect and I admire them because of their personalities and characteristics.

After the podcast, I have created some speaking activities that you can do on Learn English Vocabulary that will help you practise using the language and that will help you develop your fluency and speaking skills. There is a link on the Learn English Vocabulary website on the side of this page where you can sign up to join the speaking lessons.

OK … let’s get started.

Here’s interview one.

Tell me about a person that you admire., who are they and how do you know or know about them.

OK – someone I admire. Well, the first person that I admire is my grandfather. He was a very old fashioned man in many ways, but he had some characteristics that I think are quite rare these days.

Why do you admire him? What characteristics do you admire?

Well, he had integrity. He knew his own mind and was not prepared to compromise or change his principles. This was very important to him. He was straight-talking and completely honest. He was honourable in a way that you don’t often see these days. He was also a very intelligent man who managed to earn a degree without going to university. At least, that’s the story I was told. He managed to teach himself the knowledge required to sit the exams and passed, while working a full-time job.

Why do you think he was honourable?

This might sound strange, but he wasn’t ambitious and at work, he refused to suck up to his bosses. He did his job to the best of his ability, but at the end of the day, he put his pen down and went home. He would never have dreamed of lying or cheating anyone. But when he had done a fair days work, he stopped and went home to his family. I think he may have missed out on promotions because of this attitude, but I have always had a lot of respect for him because of it.

Interview number two

One person that I’ve always admired was a teacher at my school called Mrs Evans. She was my religious studies and theology teacher and she really taught me how to think. That sounds strange when I say it now, but it’s true.

Why do you admire Mrs. Evans? What characteristics do you admire?

Mrs Evans was a great teacher. One of the things I admired was that she was really open-minded. If anyone brought up a strange or new idea in class, she would always treat the ideas with respect and consider them, even if they seemed silly. She never dismissed anything without thinking about it first or at least gave me and my classmates the chance to discuss it first. She was also really flexible.

Why do you think she’s flexible?

Well, there was never a classroom situation that seemed to trouble her. If we were having a discussion and it went off in a strange direction and it would during most lessons, she would gently nudge and make suggestions until we were discussing the class material again. I think part of this was that she was very understanding. She could sense how people were feeling and offered help when they needed it and also challenged them when they needed it. She really challenged me a couple of times and it was difficult when it happened, but she was understanding enough to know that I needed it and could cope with it so I learnt a lot from the experience.

Interview number three

This time, I want to talk about a man called Michael. This is someone I have worked with for a long time now. Michael is a colleague of mine who actually interviewed me for a job almost 10 years ago.

Why do you admire Michael? What characteristics do you admire?

Michael is a really kind guy. He’s very open emotionally and is genuinely warm-hearted. He makes friends easily – he must have hundreds of friends, and he genuinely cares about all of them. He’s really generous with his time and money and loves being out with people.

Why do you think he’s kind?

This is quite difficult to say. It’s not like he’s into charity or grand acts of generosity. But when you are with him, he talks about himself openly, he’s not guarded or closed and he asks about me and my family with real interest and concern. And later, he remembers what I have told him and always asks with concern after my family. He’s just a really kind person.

Interview number four

OK – a person I admire is my wife. How do I know her? Well, I married her and we have two children. Being a parent with someone teaches you a lot about them.

Why do you admire your wife? What characteristics do you admire?

There are lots of characteristics that I admire. My wife is probably the bravest person I know. She has very protective instincts I think. She is also really sensitive. She’s a teacher as well, but mostly teaches young children and she has an incredible way of sensing how her pupils are feeling and getting on. She’s also incredibly supportive of me in my work and really patient.

Why do you think she’s brave and sensitive and supportive and patient?

Ha ha – OK. Years ago, we were living in Cairo in Egypt. We had been on holiday in Dahab on the Red sea and had just got back to Cairo. One of my colleagues had been there at the same time with her mum. As we were getting off the bus, we were crossing the street and My colleague’s mum fell over. Me and my colleague both looked up the road to see if any traffic was coming and there was a bus heading straight towards us. I looked back to my friend’s mum and my wife was already there, picking her up. While I was assessing the situation and the danger, my wife hadn’t hesitated. This might not sound like a big deal, but the streets in Cairo are scary and at the time I felt shame that I had not reacted sooner but also huge admiration for my wife.

I think I explained why I think she is sensitive. She has a way with people, especially children and I think this is because she can sense or understands their feelings and needs.

She’s supportive of me – I’ve been working in different places and on different projects and this has meant moving away from her family and just being there for me when I have been having problems with my own work

And she’s patient because … well, she has put up with me and wait for me and deal with my problems and she very rarely complains. I think she has to be really patient to do that.

Interview number five

The last person I want to talk about is an old friend. I’ve not seen or spoken to him for a very long time now and he’s a very private person so I’m not going to use his real name. Instead, I’m going to call him Eric.

Why do you admire Eric? What characteristics do you admire?

Eric is possibly the best company I’ve ever had. He’s incredibly charming. When he wants to, he can make a room full of people like him. Everybody wants to be his friend.

He’s funny, he’s like a comedian. He doesn’t really tell jokes, he just has a funny way of looking at the world and he’s witty. This is like being funny, but it’s related to intelligence. So he makes clever funny comments and responds really quickly to funny situations.

Why do you think he’s charming?

I’m not sure. He’s not suave and sophisticated like James Bond, though he might like to think so. He’s got a bit of an attitude of not caring about things, like he’s a bit cool about most things so when he pays attention to you and wants to entertain you it makes you feel important or special in some way.

In these interviews, I have described people who are intelligent , honest and honourable , open – minded , flexible and understanding , kind , warm – hearted and generous , brave , sensitive , supportive and patient and funny , witty and charming .

I’m going to put an activity on the lesson page and a speaking activity together for people who want to join Learn English Vocabulary. These speaking classes are a new part of the Learn English Vocabulary website and at the moment, I’m going to offer some memberships for free, but in the future, there will have to be a small cost if they are popular as the platform and tools I’m using are not free. I would also really like to be able to work on these resources fulltime.

Netflix Ad Tier Hits 40M Monthly Active Users, Nearly Double Its Scale At Start Of 2024

Netflix’s 18-month-old advertising tier has nearly doubled in size since the start of 2024, reaching 40 million monthly active users around the world.

The streaming giant revealed the number at its first in-person upfronts presentation in New York. Last year, in a presentation conducted in a virtual format due to the WGA strike, the company said it had 5 million MAUs, and the number grew to 23 million by January.

Netflix President of Advertising Amy Reinhard told the crowd that 40% of all signups now come from the ads plan in countries where it is available. Pricing plays a role in that – at $7 a month, the plan is well below many other services and the company’s own ad-free options. It is also cheaper for an account holder to sign up to a new ad-supported account rather than pay to share their password.

After insisting for years that they would never accept advertising, citing privacy concerns and other factors, Netflix execs hastily announced their reversal on an earnings call in 2022. Microsoft was enlisted as a partner to help ramp up the capability, which reached the market in select territories later that year in a remarkable sprint from first public disclosure to first ad served.

Despite the bumpy start, advertising has come to be embraced by the company (and many bulls on Wall Street) as a key strategic initiative. As it has developed its ad tier, Netflix has also stocked it with live programming, from comedy to award shows to sports. Earlier Wednesday, Netflix and the NFL announced that the streaming giant would carry two Christmas Day games this season, and at least one holiday contest in two seasons after that.

In addition to the stats, Reinhard announced Netflix will launch an in-house ad tech platform. This will give advertisers new ways to buy, new insights to leverage, and new ways to measure impact.

"Bringing our ad tech in-house will allow us to power the ads plan with the same level of excellence that's made Netflix the leader in streaming technology today," she said.

Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria unveiled a number of new film and TV titles, but she also spent time giving advertisers a sense of audience engagement. More than 70% of Netflix's ad-supported subscribers watch for more than 10 hours a month, according to Nielsen, a 15% higher level of viewing than the nearest competitor.

“Our audiences are highly engaged - and by engaged I mean that they are choosing to spend their time watching Netflix,” she said. “That's important because engagement is the key to success in streaming. When people watch our shows and movies, they get more value from Netflix, they stick around longer, and they're more likely to recommend us to their friends. And this matters to all of you because you want to be where the audiences are, too.”

Peter Naylor, Vice President of Advertising Sales, closed the presentation on a final, upbeat note. "There's a lot to be excited about over the next year,” he said. “But the story of ads on Netflix this year is pretty simple: It's about growth and momentum."

OpenAI's big event: CTO Mira Murati announces GPT-4o, which gives ChatGPT a better voice and eyes

  • OpenAI's "Spring Update" revealed new updates to ChatGPT.
  • OpenAI CTO Mira Murati kicked off the event.
  • She announced GPT-4o, its next flagship AI model, with improved voice and vision capabilities.

Insider Today

OpenAI just took the wraps off a big new update to ChatGPT.

Cofounder and CEO Sam Altman had teased "new stuff" coming to ChatGPT and GPT-4 , the AI model that powers its chatbot, and told his followers to tune in Monday at 1 p.m. ET for its "Spring Update" to learn more.

Also ahead of time, Altman ruled that the event would reveal GPT-5 or a new OpenAI search engine, which is reportedly in the works. OpenAI is reportedly planning to eventually take on internet search giant Google with its own AI-powered search product.

But the big news on Monday was OpenAI's new flagship AI model, GPT-4o, which will be free to all users and "can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time." It was CTO Mira Murati who delivered the updates with no appearance on the livestream from Altman.

There were a ton of demos intended to demonstrate the real-time smarts of GPT-4o.

OpenAI researchers showed how the new ChatGPT can quickly translate speech and help with basic linear algebra using its visual capabilities. The use of the tech on school assignments has been a polarizing topic in education since it first launched.

Say hello to GPT-4o, our new flagship model which can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time: https://t.co/MYHZB79UqN Text and image input rolling out today in API and ChatGPT with voice and video in the coming weeks. pic.twitter.com/uuthKZyzYx — OpenAI (@OpenAI) May 13, 2024

OpenAI posted another example to X of how one can interact with the new ChatGPT bot. It resembled a video call, and it got pretty meta.

In the video, ChatGPT takes in the room around it, discerns it's a recording setup, figures it might have something to do with OpenAI since the user is wearing a hoodie, and then gets told that the announcement has to do with the AI — it is the AI. It reacts with a voice that sounds more emotive.

OpenAI also announced the desktop version of ChatGPT, and a new and improved user interface.

In addition to GPT-4o and ChatGPT, OpenAI's other products include its AI-powered image generator DALL-E , its unreleased text-to-video generator Sora , and its GPT app store.

You can catch up on our liveblog of the event below.

That’s a wrap! OpenAI concludes the event without an appearance from Altman.

OpenAI says text and image input for GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT is launching today. Meanwhile, voice and video options will drop in the coming weeks, the company said.

Although Altman didn't step in front of the camera, the CEO posted videos from the audience on X.

He also teases "more stuff to share soon."

GPT-4o can also break down charts

The new AI model can interact with code bases, the OpenAI execs say. The next demo shows it analyzing a chart from some data.

It's a plot of global temperatures. GPT-4o gives some takeaways from what it sees, and CTO Mira Murati asks about the Y axis, which the AI explains.

ChatGPT reads human emotions — with a stumble

person i admire presentation

For the last live demo of the day, Zoph holds his phone up to his face and asks ChatGPT to tell him how he looks. Initially, it identifies him as a "wooden surface" — a reference to an earlier photo he had shared.

But after a second try, the model gives a better answer.

"It looks like you're feeling pretty happy and cheerful," ChatGPT says, noting the small smile on Zoph's face.

In one of the final tests, ChatGPT becomes a translator

person i admire presentation

In response to a request from an X user, Murati speaks to ChatGPT in Italian.

In turn, the bot translates her query into English for Zoph and Chen.

"Mike, she wonders if whales could talk, what would they tell us?" she said in English after hearing Murati's Italian.

It's pretty impressive.

The video demo shows how it could help with math homework, including basic linear algebra

person i admire presentation

OpenAI Research Lead Barret Zoph walks through an equation on a whiteboard (3x+1=4), and ChatGPT gives him hints as he finds the value of x — making it basically a real-time math tutor.

At the beginning, the bot jumped the gun.

"Whoops, I got too excited," it said after it tried to solve the math problem hadn't been uploaded yet.

But it then walked him through each step, recognizing his written work as he tried to solve the equation.

It was able to recognize math symbols, and even a heart.

OpenAI's first demo: Talking to GPT-4o

It's demo time!

The new bot has a voice that sounds like an American female, but no word yet if you can change it.

OpenAI Research Lead Mark Chen pulled out ChatGPT on his phone and asks for advice on giving a live presentation using Voice Mode.

"Mark, you're not a vacuum cleaner," it responds when he hyperventilates, appearing to perceive his nervousness. It then tells him to moderate his breathing.

Some big changes, you can interrupt the AI now, and there shouldn't be the usual 2 or 3-second delay with GPT-4o.

It can also detect emotion, according to OpenAI.

GPT-4o will have improved voice capabilities

person i admire presentation

Murati emphasizes the necessity of safety with the real-time voice and audio capabilities of the new GPT-4o model.

She says OpenAI is "continuing our iterative deployment to bring all the capabilities to you."

Murati says the big news is a "new flagship model" called GPT-4o.

The new model is called GPT-4o, and Murati says that OpenAI is making a "huge step forward" with ease of use with the new model.

It's free for users, and "allows us to bring GPT-4 class intelligence to our free users," Murati says.

And we're off!

person i admire presentation

The livestream began with CTO Mira Murati at OpenAI's offices.

OpenAI is going to be announcing 3 things today, she says. "That's it."

For those who want to watch live, you can view the whole event here.

OpenAI will be livestreaming its spring update, which kicks off in less than an hour.

Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, has a global deal to allow OpenAI to train its models on its media brands' reporting.
