Alexandre Aja makes a very different kind of confined spaces thriller to follow up his great “ Crawl ” in this week’s also-great “Oxygen,” premiering today on Netflix. It may have been in development before the world knew anything about COVID-19 (and once had Anne Hathaway attached), but this truly feels like the most 'pandemic thriller' yet in its own unpredictable way. It’s a film about isolation, loss, and an uncertain future. Shot in July 2020, it clearly reflects all of the international concerns about diminishing oxygen intakes even as it unfolds in a manner that seems unimaginable. Most of all, it features a stunning performance from the great Mélanie Laurent (“ Inglourious Basterds ”), who owns the screen as the film’s only real character. With robust direction in an incredibly confined space and Laurent’s phenomenal work, “Oxygen” should feel like a breath of fresh air for people looking for something to watch on Netflix. (Sorry.)
Laurent plays Liz Hansen, a doctor who wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no memory of how she got there. In fact, her memories seem jumbled and inconsistent altogether, adding to her confusion. At first, she’s not even sure of her own name, or her professional or personal background. As these memories start to filter in, she communicates with an on-board computer named MILO (voiced by Mathieu Amalric ), who sometimes sounds only slightly less nefarious than HAL when it comes to projections regarding Hansen’s odds of survival. You see, the chamber is losing oxygen fast. Liz has to figure out who she is, why she’s there, and how to fix her nightmare situation. It’s not unlike “ Buried ” meets “2001: Space Odyssey,” which is a hell of an elevator pitch.
The first half-hour of “Oxygen” is its most effective as the film unfolds like a mystery wherein a victim has to ask the right questions to figure out how to save her life. She has a supercomputer at her disposal in MILO but it’s a system that only responds—it doesn’t think for itself. She can’t just tell MILO to figure shit out. She has to ask the right questions to get the truth of why she’s there and how she can escape. Why has no one responded to MILO’s distress signal? Why do calls to home and authorities seem to be getting her nowhere? Why can’t she even remember her own past other than in fleeting images? One of the fun things about “Oxygen” is that there are concrete answers to all of these questions by the time the movie is over. Unlike some recent high-concept sci-fi, the pieces fit in “Oxygen.” It might be neat to rewatch the film after all of its secrets have been revealed, but it’s that first view wherein we know only as much as Liz knows that’s so riveting.
Naturally, given the entire film (other than glimpses of flashbacks or memories) takes place in the chamber, Aja asks a lot of Laurent. She delivers and then some. Running an entire gamut of emotions from fear to anger to grief, Laurent gives what will easily be one of the best performances of 2021. She’s perfect for this part, reminding viewers of her incredible range while locked into a performance in which she basically only uses her face and voice.
Some people won’t be completely satisfied by the final act of “Oxygen,” but I think it holds together, and it’s undeniably remarkable even if judged purely as an acting exercise. Thanks largely to Aja’s momentum and Laurent’s performance, I also found it surprisingly moving for this kind of high-concept thriller. Liz wakes up to a situation she never imagined and has to figure out how to save herself before her oxygen runs out. Flashbacks to hospitals with masked patients and doctors place the tension even more firmly in the COVID era while never explicitly drawing that parallel in a way that heightens the tension. Without spoiling anything, it becomes a film that intertwines both grief and optimism, which kind of defines where so much of the world is at in 2021, assessing what we’ve lost while hoping for the future.
(Note: Netflix often defaults to dubbed versions. Watch this in French. Mine started dubbed and you'd lose so much of Laurent's performance if you let someone else speak for her.)

Film: Oxygen Cast: Gopichand, Raashi Khanna, Anu Emmanuel, Jagapati Babu, Shaam, Chandra Mohan, Ashish Vidyarthi, Sayaji Shinde, Abhimanyu Singh, Vennela Kishore, Ali, Brahmaji, Avantika Vandanapu, Jayan Prabhakar, Thagubothu Ramesh, Sithara, Sudha, Sakshi Chaudhary (item song) and others Dialogues: Surendra Krishna, Jothi Krishna Cinematography: Chota K Naidu, Vetri Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja Editing: Uddhav Action: Stunt Silva, Peter Hein Presents: A. M. Rathnam Banner: Sri Sai Raam Creations Produced by: S. Aishwarya Written and directed by: A. M. Jyothi Krishna Running time: 156 mins Release date: Nov 30, 2017 CBFC Rating: UA
What's it about Krishna Prasad (Gopichand) who comes to marry the daughter of businessman Raghupathi (Jagapathi Babu) finds that she is not entirely interested in marriage. After couple of songs and many teasing episodes, she (Raashi Khanna) agrees to marry him but then she comes to know the real Krishna Prasad. He has not come to marry her but to take revenge. Who really Krishna Prasad is? What his is mission? Why has he come to her home?
Analysis Director A M Jyothi Krishna debuted with "Nee Manasu Naaku Telusu" a decade and half ago and later made two more movies but he is known more for his debut movie that had Tarun, Shriya and Trisha and also hit music from Rehman. The director took huge gap to make another one and his latest is this "Oxygen" that features Gopichand. The film was launched with much fanfare in 2015 but it ran into many financial issues and stuck in the cans for long time.
The crux of "Oxygen" is about an operation called "Oxygen". Hero Gopichand, a military officer, takes this operation to root out the illegal business of lethal cigarettes that cause severe cancer quickly which are being circulated all over India. The cigarette packs doesn't carry the name of manufacturer. How this military officer finds out the manufacturer, why it has personally made him to take this up is told in regular commercial manner. While watching the entire first half of the movie, you don't get the whiff of the actual story because the writer-director has stored this for the post-interval. The entire first half is filled up with silly and outdated romantic episodes on Gopichand and Raashi Khanna which are tiresome.
Comedian Ali's comedy, which reeks of 1990's generation, induces boredom further. However, the interval bang is interesting though it was seen in recent commercial entertainers. The second half is handled far well but it doesn't make us feel or rooted for the hero's mission. That is the huge flaw in the narration. The so-called emotional scenes are also handled in mechanical manner. The lofty social message - kaala market of lethal-cigarettes is lost in this din of old-style mass sequences. Gopichand is okay. Jagapathi Babu has got different and meaty character. Raashi Khanna's role and her performance is boring. Anu Emmanuel's character reminds us of Asin in 'Ghajini'. Brahmaji, Shaam and Abhimanyu Singh as Jagapathi's brothers make their presence felt.
Cinematography (Chota K Naidu and Vetri) and production values are decent. Music is huge let down except the melodious romantic duet "Telusa Manasa". Editing is bad. Writer and director Jyothi Krishna has shown his mark in some episodes in the second half, but his screenplay is too clichéd.
Bottom - line : Jyothi Krishna directed Gopichand starrer 'Oxygen' is like watching two films on a single ticket. The entire first half runs on flimsy sequences. While the second half is handled fairly better way but by then we lose all interest in it. Uneven narration is major issue.

Oxygen Review, What’s Behind:
Action hero Gopichand is on poorest patch of career. After lot many postponements behind the screen, Oxygen directed by Jothi Krishna has hit the screens today. While Rashi Khanna, Anu Emmanuel filled the glamour part, there’s stellar casting in the film which made it a bit exciting. Has Oxygen got any meat in it?
Oxygen Story Review:
Krishna Prasad (Gopichand) lands in India and that too in Achuthapuram village to marry Shruti (Rashi Khanna), daughter of business tycoon Raghupathi (Jagapathi Babu) who has a very big family. On the other side, there is a hidden threat for Raghupathi’s family from an anonymous enemy who already killed Raghupathi’s elder brother (Jayaprakash). A huge twist is awaited when Krishna Prasad is believed to become a savior. Who is Krishna Prasad and what happened to his family including a medico girlfriend (Anu Emmanuel) is rest.
Oxygen Artists, Technicians Review:
Oxygen though sounds like an interesting film by its title but Jothi Krishna’s story, treatment and direction are completely flawed. Except having an interval twist and a message for smokers, rest everything is forced into screenplay. Neither the writing part nor the execution part, nowhere he had clarity. What begins as a boring romance and fun in rural backdrop loses track episode by episode testing the viewer patience. Only in second half when core element is revealed, there’s a bit of relief but derails immediately. Camera by Vetri and Chota K Naidu is inconsistent. Editing by Uddhav is bad and so is the music from Yuvan Shankar Raja along with background score from Chinna. Production standards from S Aishwarya are good.
Onto artists, Gopichand looked handsome throughout. He has got two shaded character, one as a good hero winning the hearts of heroine’s family members and second is of an Army man with a suffered family. He did a wonderful job in both. Rashi Khanna is beautiful in village belle costumes. Anu Emmanuel played a role with purpose. Jagapathi Babu missed his mark in a poorly etched role. Ali’s comedy is just ok. Of the rest there is a big batch of Brahmaji, Supreet, Amith, Sayaji Shinde, Kick Shyam, Ashish Vidyarthi, Abhimanyu Singh, Sithara, Sudha, Chandra Mohan and many more filling the screen.
Oxygen Review Positives:
Second Half Flashback
Oxygen Review Negatives:
Clichéd Narration
Predictability
Oxygen Review Rating Analysis:
Going by essence in title, do not expect any chemical reaction to happen in theater. For sure there will be an electrolyte imbalance for patrons as they feel the exasperation. While the thought of Jothi Krishna to educate the people on life threatening diseases to be caused by cigarette smoking to justify his title but the treatment he employed is full of carbon dioxide. No where he succeeded in raising the curiosity levels which dampened the whole show.
Beginning the first half with murder of Jayaprakash and introducing his brother Jagapathi Babu as industrialist before titles, obviously the much needed thrill factor was established. Once Gopichand enters and narrative shifts to Achuthapuram, its unstoppable boredom. Ali though provided laughter at instances, nothing worked right. In between Sayaji’s track was disgustingly shot. Bridge fight when Gopichand rescues Rashi Khanna family is pathetically picturized followed by a song. Interval is though an acceptable twist, it wasn’t nerve breaking.
Second half opens Gopichand flashback. His family and girlfriend Anu Emmanuel are a perfect fit while Army portions are weak. Whatever the message Jothi Krishna tried to convey in this part is appreciable. Rest is the formulaic revenge audience has to bear with. Addition of AshishVidyarthi track is also a time waste.
All in all, Oxygen did not breathe any fresh air for Gopichand’s dwindling career. His flop streak continues. Jothi Krishna’s poor direction has let the sincerity in message to dilute and drain away. Commercially, one might have to wait on how B, C center audience react. CJ goes with 2 stars.

What to Know
Oxygen gets the white-knuckle maximum out of its claustrophobic setting, with director Alexandre Aja and star Mélanie Laurent making this a must-watch thriller for sci-fi fans.
Viewers expecting standard sci-fi might be a little put off by some of its more unexpected choices, but Oxygen is tremendously creative and rarely less than engaging.
