Indiscipline among Secondary School Students and Ways of Curbing it

Secondary school is a crucial phase in the life of a student where they are not only acquiring knowledge but also developing their personality and character. However, in recent years the issue of indiscipline among secondary school students has become a cause for concern. It is not uncommon to hear stories of students engaging in acts of vandalism bullying substance abuse and even violence. This indiscipline not only affects the overall learning environment but also hinders students’ personal growth and future prospects.

Indiscipline among students can manifest in various ways. Some students may consistently skip classes or arrive late disrupting the flow of learning. Others may engage in disruptive behavior during class interrupting the teacher and distracting fellow students. Then there are those who resort to violence or bullying creating a hostile and unsafe atmosphere. All these instances of indiscipline have long-term consequences for the students themselves as well as for their peers and the school community as a whole.

There are several underlying causes of indiscipline among secondary school students. One primary factor is the lack of proper guidance and supervision from parents or guardians. In many cases parents are too preoccupied with their own lives or neglectful of their children’s activities leaving them to their own devices. This lack of attention and guidance can result in students seeking their own path often leading to indiscipline.

Furthermore the current education system often focuses solely on academic achievements putting immense pressure on students to perform well. This intense pressure can lead to stress anxiety and frustration among students making them more prone to indiscipline. It is imperative for schools to adopt a holistic approach to education considering the overall development of students’ physical mental and emotional well-being.

To curb the issue of indiscipline among secondary school students various measures can be implemented. Firstly there needs to be enhanced communication and collaboration between parents teachers and students. Regular parent-teacher meetings should be conducted to discuss student progress and any behavioral concerns. Parents should be actively involved in their child’s life providing guidance and support.

Additionally schools should prioritize character development and impart values such as respect empathy and responsibility. This can be done through extracurricular activities community service projects and workshops on life skills. By instilling these values early on students will be more likely to exhibit disciplined behavior and make positive choices in their lives.

Creating a safe and inclusive school environment is also crucial in curbing indiscipline. Schools should have strict policies against bullying violence and substance abuse with a zero-tolerance approach. Teachers should undergo training on conflict resolution and classroom management techniques to effectively deal with disciplinary issues. (ii) The teacher is wrongly blamed for imposing illegal fees, which indicates a misunderstanding of the teacher’s responsibilities and financial role within the educational system.

(5c) The irony of life highlighted in the passage is that the teacher, who is the builder of a nation’s human resources and plays a crucial role in national growth and development, is despised and neglected by the people and institutions he serves.

3. You are the chief speaker in a debate on the topic: The Establishment of Federal Government Colleges is a Blessing to the Nigerian Child. Write your argument for or against the proposition.

4. Write an article suitable for publication in your school magazine on the topic: Indiscipline among Secondary School Students and Ways of Curbing it.

SECTION B COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS) You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this section Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions on it. In this part of the world, one group that is yet to be appreciated by many is the “Teacher”. The teacher belongs to the noble profession. When religious leaders fail to impart the right knowledge, the teacher takes up the gawntlet for the re-orientation of the child when has been indoctrinated with the teaching of affluence and fanaticism This re-orierntation is done using moral instructions in schools. He emphasises the need for justice, love, honesty, sincerity, diigence, discipline, reward and punishment.

The teacher re-discovers the positive value in the mal-adjuned children. The  guidance counselor -a teacher-has been forced to perform the abandoned roles of the parents.

However, it is disappointing that all these become slave labour as the teacher has been seriously denigrated. The efforts of the teacher are not appreciated by the parents who  have neglected their duties, bandoning them to the techer. The teacher, a builder of nations” human resources”, is unfortunately despised and neglected by the people he made and institutions he is serving. The ruling class does not care about him. His issues ase not looked upon as important and are hardly remembered in parliament. His good work is remembered only during graduation ceremonies but forgotten as soon as the imparted knowledge places one in a position of authority.

The teacher who depends on the society which ought to protect him incidentally, has been enveloped by so much insensitivity of the society such that he is now abandoned to his fate.

The teacher has been unjustly accused of imposition of all forms of illegal levies and given all manner of names. He is the target of every othet group critical of the falling standard of education whereas the teacher has no power to improve on the infrastructure of the school and has no access to grants for impeovement of libraries or laboratorics. He is only to be seen and not to be beard. Consequently, the teacher cannot disabuse the mind of the misinformed public that has failed to ecognize his role as the greatest contributor to national growth and development.

Under this circumstance that the teacher has found himself, he has to work harder in order to train and produce better informed leaders. If he relaxes, things would get worse. If he works harder, there is hope that tomorrow would be better for the nation and for him.

6. SECTION C SUMMARY [30 MARKSĮ You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this section. Read the passage below carefully and answer the question on it.

A nation that is democratic usually would have democratic institutions. One of such institutions is the electoral commission. Constitutionally, the commission is a body responsible for organising and conducting elections in a political system. In other words, it is as an independent and impartial body mandated to organise and conduct elections in a given country. It has a chairman as the head and other members. For Instance, Nigeria has had several electoral commissions with different designations. Some of these are the Federal Electoral Commission of Nigeria (FEDECO), the National Electoral Commission (NEC), the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The above-named comnmissions are merely achange of nomenclature but the functions remain the same.

The statutory functions of the Commission need not be over-emphasised as they are aimed at conducting free and fair elections. The Commission is saddled with the responsibility of dividing the country into constituencies or electoral districts. The advantage is that it gives the electorate the opportunity to express their franchise easily. But the disadvantage is that it may lead to gerrymandering. That is, the leaders may construct the clectoral districts in such a way as to give the majority party more representations in the parliament. Political parties are registered according to laid down rules and regulations. In Nigeria, for example, before the conduct of the 2011 elections, INEC registered over 50 political parties that participated in the elections. In addition, the Commission also registered eligible voters. This is done manually or electronically. The expression of franchise by voters may take the form of restricted or universal adult suffrage. However, the latter is the most popular and universally acknowledged. It is constitutional and democratic because all qualified adults are allowed to vote and be voted for. The Cormnission educates the electorate about the necessary issues involved in elections. It informs the people about their rights, the method of voting to be adopted (either secret or open balloting), identification of party symbols and the proper manner of voting. The body also provides all necessary materials needed for an election (both sensitive and non-sensitive), such as ballot boxes, ballot papers, result sheets, etc. Moreso, aspirants for elections are properly screened and their eligibility duly ascertained before any election. This affirms the credibility of the candidate who is vying for any particular post.

Electoral officers like polling clerks, polling orderlies, presiding oficers and returning officers are appointed and trained by the Commission. These enhance the smooth conduct of elections. Finally, the Commission is responsible for the counting of votes and release of the results of each election conducted. This is to be done under strict supervision to avoid rigging of elections.

In conclusion, while Federal Government colleges may provide some level of education and resources to Nigerian children, the lack of resources and quality education as well as Limited access to facilities and services mean it is not a blessing to the Nigerian child and should not be accepted as one. The areas you will be tested in English Language OBJ are:

A. Words And Opposite (antonyms):  E.g Halima likes to dwell on trivial , rather than ___ matters.

The answer is simply C. The opposite of trivial is weighty. You need to practice as many synonyms and antonyms as possible.

The good news is that you don’t need to know all the synonyms and antonyms in the dictionary, you can use common sense to answer questions well.

B. Nearest in Meaningh (synonyms):  In this part, you will be asked questions and to look for words or group of words nearest in meaning.

E.g: Everyone has the urge to succeed in life. Find the word nearest in meaning to the underlined word.

A. Compulsion B. Desire C. Need D. Courage

Of course, the answer is desire. Simple right?

C. Complete Sentence : You will be given a sentence and asked to choose the word that best completes each of the following sentences.

E.g: We can ___ signal from one point to another.

A. Transmit B. Transmission C. Transmission Transmission D. I mean transmission

D. Fill In The Gap Neco Questions:  You shall be given questions with gaps and asked to find sentences that best completes the gap. Here, you are not filling the gap with a simple word but a prase or clause.

E.g: If Isaac had woken up earlier, he ___ breakfast.

A. Would not have missed B. Ought not to miss C. Shall have missed D. May have missed

In simple sentence, Isaac woke up late and he missed the breakfast. The correct answer is A.

E. Lexis structure and interpretations : You must also get questions from lexis and structure and interpretation. The good news is that if you understand A to D Objective questions for Neco above, you shall be good to go.

2020 NECO English language Questions

2023 NECO English language Questions: The National Examinations Council (NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate in Education in June/July and December/January respectively.

Are you a candidate who is in search of 2023 NECO English language Questions? If so you are at the right place because Nkedugists Team is here to guide you on How the 2023 Neco English past questions are been set.

The NECO English Paper I – III consists of multiple choice questions, all of which should be answered within 1 hour for 40 marks. Paper II will consist of five essay topics and a passage each to test candidates’ comprehension and summary skills. Candidates will be expected to write an essay on one of the topics and answer all the questions on Comprehension and Summary passages which carries 100 marks.

Finally, paper IV will consist of sixty multiple-choice items on the Test of Orals for candidates in Nigeria and Liberia, and on Listening Comprehension for candidates in Ghana, Gambia, and Sierra Leone. All the questions will be answered in 45 minutes for 30 marks.

PAPER II SECTION A CONTINUOUS  WRITING

You are to answer only  one  question from this section. All questions carry equal marks. Your answer should not be less than  450 words . You are advised to spend about  45 minutes  on this section.

1. Since the inception of social media in Nigeria, there has been a rise in cyberbullying and the distribution of fake news.  Write an article suitable for publication in a national newspaper on the need for Government to regulate social media.

2. There have been many articles recently in the newspapers criticizing trafficking in children. Write an article for publication in one of your national dailies, condemning this practice.

3. A friend of yours confided in you that she intends to drop out of school to get. Write a letter to her giving, at least, three reasons why she should stay in school.

4. Your school has been performing poorly in public examinations for the past three years. Write a letter to your principal suggesting ways of making students more interested in academic work.

5. Write a story to illustrate the saying: I killed two birds with one stone.

2020 NECO English language Questions

SECTION B COMPREHENSION

The passage was interesting. The subject matter was within the experience and grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage. Nevertheless, some of the candidates did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the passage. Such candidates simply resorted to copying portions of the passage as answers.

SECTION C (SUMMARY)

Important Note To Candidates:  Some candidates lifts whole sentences without modification and presented them as answers while writing the summary part of the exam. Candidates must learn to paraphrase and must be able to separate the main points from illustrations and examples in given sentences. Copying portions of the set passage verbatim without regard to what is asked is certainly not summary writing.

Also, some candidates used preambles that when taken with the points, did not make good sentences. Candidates who decide to use preambles must ensure that they do so correctly. Candidates must understand what the passage says and what the questions demand if they must tackle the summary questions successfully.

In each of the following sentences, there is one underlined word and one gap. From the list of words lettered A to D, choose the one that is  most nearly opposite  in meaning to the underlined word and that will, at the same time, correctly fill the gap in the sentence.

  • Most African countries face poverty while few enjoy ……………… A.  influence B.  money C.  affluence D.  power.
  • Last year our farmers cultivated more crops than they…………… A.  destroyed B.  uprooted C.  harvested D.  yielded

From the words lettered A to D, choose the word that  best completes  each of the following sentences.

  • There would have been a riot in our school but for the timely ……….. of our staff. A.  intervention B.  interruption C.  interference D.  invasion.
  •  The armed robbers …every room in the bank to look for money. A.   explored B.  ransacked C.  raked D.  swept.

After each of the following sentences, a list of possible interpretations is given.   Choose the interpretation that you consider  most appropriate  for each sentence.

SECTION A: CONTINUOUS WRITING You are required to answer only one question from this section. Your answer should not be less than 450 words. All questions carry equal marks. You are advised to spend about 45 minutes on this section.

No (3) Good morning respected judges, my worthy opponents, My colleagues and audience,

I (your name) hereby standing for the motion that says religious studies should be made compulsory for students in secondary schools and if I have your permission I would like to begin by defining religious studies. Religious studies also known as the study of religion , is an academic field devoted to research into religious beliefs, behaviors , and institutions. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically based, and cross-cultural perspectives.

From The above definition it is obvious that religious studies is of great important and should be made compulsory in secondary schools with The following points of mine.

Firstly, One of the most common importance of Religious teachings is that it helps students understand the place of various religions in our society. It helps them resolve the important questions of their own inner self and this understanding contributes to a more just and cohesive society.

Secondly, Religious education in any school should not simply be a subject making up a proportion of the taught curriculum.

It needs to pervade the congenial environment in the school. Such an environment is not just good for the school but also for the society as a whole as well primarily because students are themselves the propagators of moral values and these are the values that are the most valued and cherished for the quality of relationships amongst the whole humanity.

By listening and responding to stories from religious traditions, students are assimilating it as part of their personal, social and emotional development. They have opportunities to take part in celebrations and special events whilst using their understanding in communication, language and literacy. Utilising artefacts, music, stories and art from varying cultures helps them in increasing their knowledge and understanding of the world increases as they ask questions about religion, culture and worship and develop attitudes of curiosity and respect.

Thirdly, It introduces students to different cultures and religions through various learning about stories, people, places and times of special importance, and artefacts and beliefs that are part of modern life and society. Students are encouraged to respond sensitively to all religions, traditions and cultures, using their imagination and sense of wonder. I believe I have confused you enough with my points. Their study of faiths develops appropriate, secular view of the world and a religious community with a significant local presence. Thank You.

No (4) Once upon a time there lived a carefree and complacent young man named, Jagu. He had high dreams but low actions. He often dreamed and boasted that one day he will amaze the world with his feats. His father was a very wise man. He wanted to put some sense in him. He wanted to instil in him that if he wanted to be successful, he must work for it. So, he made a plan to teach his lesson. He took the help of a fortuneteller.

He sent him to Jagu. The fortuneteller said to Jagu. “I am a famous fortuneteller; I know something big is going to happen in your life on the first day of the next month. Take this flower and keep it with you.” Jagu was quite excited to get the flower from the fortuneteller.

He went home and told the incident that success was coming his way. He will prove it to the world on the first day of the next month. He told all his friends and relatives. Everyone was curious to see as to what would happen on the first day of the next month. The most excited person was Jagu himself. The night before the first day of the next month he could not sleep. And the next morning as he woke up, he found the day to be as normal as the other days had been. No news of any success came. The day came and just went ordinarily. Jagu became quite dejected.

At the right time his father came and told Jagu, “Success does not come with dreaming and predictions, you have to work hard and win it and create it. Go out, and create your own success with efforts.” Jagu learnt the lesson and stopped counting his chickens before they were hatched.

COMPREHENSION

The NECO English Paper I – III consists of multiple choice questions, all of which should be answered within 1 hour for 40 marks.

Paper II will consist of five essay topics and a passage each to test candidates’ comprehension and summary skills.

Candidates will be expected to write an essay on one of the topics and answer all the questions on Comprehension and Summary passages which carries 100 marks.

Finally, paper IV will consist of sixty multiple-choice items on the Test of Orals for candidates in Nigeria and Liberia, and on Listening Comprehension for candidates in Ghana, Gambia, and Sierra Leone. All the questions will be answered in 45 minutes for 30 marks.

PAPER II: SECTION A ( Continuous Writing)

You are to answer only one question from this section. All questions carry equal marks. Your answer should not be less than 450 words. You are advised to spend about 45 minutes on this section.

1. Since the inception of social media in Nigeria, there has been a rise in cyberbullying and the distribution of fake news.  Write an article suitable for publication in a national newspaper on the need for Government to regulate social media.

2. There have been many articles recently in the newspapers criticizing trafficking in children. Write an article for publication in one of your national dailies, condemning this practice.

3. A friend of yours confided in you that she intends to drop out of school to get. Write a letter to her giving, at least, three reasons why she should stay in school.

4. Your school has been performing poorly in public examinations for the past three years. Write a letter to your principal suggesting ways of making students more interested in academic work.

5. Write a story to illustrate the saying: I killed two birds with one stone.

Section B: Comprehension

The passage was interesting. The subject matter was within the experience and grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage.

Nevertheless, some of the candidates did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the passage. Such candidates simply resorted to copying portions of the passage as answers.

Section C  (Summary)

Important Note to Candidates:  Some candidates lift whole sentences without modification and presented them as answers while writing the summary part of the exam. Candidates must learn to paraphrase and must be able to separate the main points from illustrations and examples in given sentences. Copying portions of the set passage verbatim without regard to what is asked is certainly not summary writing.

Also, some candidates used preambles that when taken with the points, did not make good sentences. Candidates who decide to use preambles must ensure that they do so correctly.

Candidates must understand what the passage says and what the questions demand if they must tackle the summary questions successfully.

A. 2021 NECO ENGLISH LANGUAGE (ESSAY) ANSWERS

QUESTION 1 It was Sunday evening. The family was relaxing and watching television when they first heard the reporter say, “China is suffering from a deadly virus known as corona virus or Covid-19.” Everyone stared at the television screen with curiosity that turned into alarm. Their hearts were pounding hard. Later that day, Michelle, the eldest daughter of the family, researched on the internet and found more about this disease from multiple sources. Every time she encountered a new fact, she prayed for safety from the deadly virus.

Weeks passed and it felt like people forgot about this new and highly contagious virus as it was something that was happening to people in China and there was nothing they had to be concerned about. Slowly and gradually, people stopped taking measures to prevent themselves from catching coronavirus. Several countries had closed borders with others to prevent the spread of the contagious disease. Life was back to normal.

Michelle and all her family members planned to visit Lagos and spend some good time together. They thought since the virus was mainly affecting China, it was safe to fly to Lagos. They all were extremely excited and after the start of the school’s August break, they flew to Lagos, Michelle ’ s dream State, unaware that a terrible experience awaited them.

Michelle’s family comprised four members, including her. Her father was a businessman, her mother was a housewife and she also had a sixteen year old younger brother. She loved her family and had planned this trip months ago. After they finally reached their destination, they booked into a hotel and had dinner and slept early as they were tired. They would do sightseeing the next day.

At half past seven in the morning, they ate breakfast and got ready to enjoy exploring the place. As they stepped out of the hotel, the management provided them with masks. They were completely surprised and looked at each other in complete amazement. However, they shunned the idea of using the mask as a preventive measure and went to the Ikeja City Mall.

The mall was a little far from the hotel and hence everyone was hungry again. Upon reaching the mall, they hurried to the food court where they saw nearly everyone wearing masks. They made fun of them, that the people were still scared of coronavirus and ate Amala And Ewedu Soup, one of the famous foods of the West. They enjoyed themselves a lot and later returned to the hotel to spend the night there. The next day when Michelle’s mother woke up, she saw that Michelle was having high fever and that she was constantly coughing. Terrified, they took her to the nearby hospital and came to know that she had coronavirus. The family immediately became depressed and sad, and upon the doctor’s prescription started to take measures to protect themselves. Michelle was kept in quarantine, and upon research the doctors found out that she got infected as she sat beside a virus-infected patient in the aircraft. The doctors tried their best to treat her and after 14 days her condition was stable enough for her to be discharged. All this time her family was kept away from her. Finally, when she was a little better and the doctors gave her the permission to travel and the family returned to their homeland. This incident made them learn the biggest lesson of life that, “Prevention is better than cure.”

QUESTION 2 Recent findings have revealed that students have lost the culture of reading. The reading culture among youths has been said to have waned away. This is unfortunate. In fact, the rate by which, Nigeria recorded failure by Nigerian students in the West African Examination Council WAEC, and National Examination Commission NECO including, other examinations taken in Nigeria is quite glaring that this is true. My first suggestion on how to go about improving the reading culture among students will be to organize trainings for youths and workshops for students. There should be series of such training programs for young people in the country on reading culture, and course of study counseling, and Parents Teachers training, including, child development workshops across the country. For instance, government and corporate organizations and non-governmental organizations should volunteer in hosting students of public secondary schools and students of private secondary schools across Nigeria, for instance, all for the purpose of enlightening the students on the important of imbibing the culture of reading, because this approach will help make these students brilliant and best brains, and subsequently make them responsible citizens in the future, that will contribute outstandingly to nation building. Another way that I think will improve and promote reading culture in among students will be in the area of students’ debate and students assay competition. I must tell you that this is one of the key factors that will actually help in achieving an improvement in the area of reading culture among youths and students.

Therefore, there is need to organize inter school debate competition and inter school essay writing competition for both students in public secondary schools and students in private secondary schools across the country. While organizing for these student competitions, prizes must be given to the best performing students in the competitions, as well as the participating schools. This gesture will encourage Nigerian students, as well as, their teachers to put more efforts, so that they can stand a chance of winning the prizes next time there is such competition. By so doing, there is all indications that, the reading culture among students will improve. Again, if free books can be donated to pupils and students in both private primary and secondary schools, as well as public primary and secondary schools it will contribute towards improving reading culture in among students.

That is why it is important and necessary for Nigerian government and other government agencies, including, non-governmental organizations and corporate organizations to take upon themselves the running of campaign programs, where free books can be donated to students in both private primary and secondary schools and public primary and secondary schools. Good enough, some students particularly, those ones in private schools are privileged to study in environments that have well equipped modern library facilities with books that even promotes reading culture and promote research but unfortunately, students have been carried away by those set of things that do not add value for their studies, for example, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and Twitter, as well as, other social media platforms which have distracts them from studying. In fact, some of those students, whose parents are wealthy and influential believed that, with their parents wealth disposition, they will sort their way out. These behaviours and attitudes on the part of students should be discouraged, and they should be redirected to path of being book friendly, as well as imbibing the culture of reading. Examination malpractice has remained one of the evils that have bewitched Nigerian students, to the extent that, the students have lost the culture of reading, let alone to read and prepare for examination. In my opinion, I will be suggesting that, there should be campaign and advocacy against examination malpractices. This platform can also serve as a forum, where issues concerning the role of stakeholders in investing their time and resources and energy towards eradicating examination malpractices in Nigeria can be discussed. It could also serve as platform, where members of the public can be sensitized on how they can collectively work to assist in complimenting the efforts of the government in eradicating examination malpractices in Nigeria, and promote reading culture. There is need therefore, for Nigerian government to rise up and be committed in making sure that it promote better education philosophy in the country and as well, restore reading culture for the purpose of eradicating the problem of examination malpractices in Nigerian schools.

Update on NECO English: How to Answer NECO Comprehension Questions 2023

1)  Avoid grammatical blunders because there is a penalty for the use of wrong grammar. There must be an agreement between the subject and verb in your sentence.

2) Do not spell words wrongly. Spelling your words correctly shows your diligence. Therefore, you must take pains to spell your words correctly.

3) Your answers must make sense before any part of it is accepted for scoring. Therefore, endeavour to give the correct answers.

4) Where you are asked to replace an underlined word in the passage with another word, your answer must fit in perfectly in terms of the contextual meaning and collocation. For example, if the underlined word is a noun, you must use another noun to replace it and it must have the contextual meaning of the underlined word.

5) If you are asked to show a comparison between two things or more in the passage, your answer must show such comparison.

6) Avoid mindless lifting. Though you are at liberty to use the words from the passage in your answers, you must be able to use your own words or expressions to show that you really understood the passage.

7) Your answers should be in sentences unless otherwise stated.

8) Read the passage very carefully more than ones (at least three times) and make sure you understand the passage. The first reading brings you into close contact with the underlying message/theme of the passage

(2) Recent findings have revealed that students have lost the culture of reading. The reading culture among youths has been said to have waned away. This is unfortunate. In fact, the rate by which, Nigeria recorded failure by Nigerian students in the West African Examination Council WAEC, and National Examination Commission NECO including, other examinations taken in Nigeria is quite glaring that this is true. My first suggestion on how to go about improving the reading culture among students will be to organize trainings for youths and workshops for students. There should be series of such training programs for young people in the country on reading culture, and course of study counseling, and Parents Teachers training, including, child development workshops across the country. For instance, government and corporate organizations and non-governmental organizations should volunteer in hosting students of public secondary schools and students of private secondary schools across Nigeria, for instance, all for the purpose of enlightening the students on the important of imbibing the culture of reading, because this approach will help make these students brilliant and best brains, and subsequently make them responsible citizens in the future, that will contribute outstandingly to nation building. Another way that I think will improve and promote reading culture in among students will be in the area of students’ debate and students assay competition. I must tell you that this is one of the key factors that will actually help in achieving an improvement in the area of reading culture among youths and students. Therefore, there is need to organize inter school debate competition and inter school essay writing competition for both students in public secondary schools and students in private secondary schools across the country. While organizing for these student competitions, prizes must be given to the best performing students in the competitions, as well as the participating schools. This gesture will encourage Nigerian students, as well as, their teachers to put more efforts, so that they can stand a chance of winning the prizes next time there is such competition. By so doing, there is all indications that, the reading culture among students will improve. Again, if free books can be donated to pupils and students in both private primary and secondary schools, as well as public primary and secondary schools it will contribute towards improving reading culture in among students. That is why it is important and necessary for Nigerian government and other government agencies, including, non-governmental organizations and corporate organizations to take upon themselves the running of campaign programs, where free books can be donated to students in both private primary and secondary schools and public primary and secondary schools. Good enough, some students particularly, those ones in private schools are privileged to study in environments that have well equipped modern library facilities with books that even promotes reading culture and promote research but unfortunately, students have been carried away by those set of things that do not add value for their studies, for example, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and Twitter, as well as, other social media platforms which have distracts them from studying. In fact, some of those students, whose parents are wealthy and influential believed that, with their parents wealth disposition, they will sort their way out. These behaviours and attitudes on the part of students should be discouraged, and they should be redirected to path of being book friendly, as well as imbibing the culture of reading. Examination malpractice has remained one of the evils that have bewitched Nigerian students, to the extent that, the students have lost the culture of reading, let alone to read and prepare for examination. In my opinion, I will be suggesting that, there should be campaign and advocacy against examination malpractices. This platform can also serve as a forum, where issues concerning the role of stakeholders in investing their time and resources and energy towards eradicating examination malpractices in Nigeria can be discussed. It could also serve as platform, where members of the public can be sensitized on how they can collectively work to assist in complimenting the efforts of the government in eradicating examination malpractices in Nigeria, and promote reading culture. There is need therefore, for Nigerian government to rise up and be committed in making sure that it promote better education philosophy in the country and as well, restore reading culture for the purpose of eradicating the problem of examination malpractices in Nigerian schools. ====================================

(1) In April 1993, at a young and irresponsible age, I found out I was pregnant. With much prodding, I reluctantly and regretfully terminated the pregnancy. I struggled with what I had done and went through several years of feeling unbearably guilty. As a Catholic, I went to confession, but after a brief, tearful session, I figured the priest must not have heard me through my sobs because God couldn’t possibly forgive me with a couple of Hail Marys and Our Fathers. After dealing with several years of depression, I found myself on a different path of self-destructive behavior. I was motivated enough to go to college, but not for all of the right reasons. I did okay at school and attended class regularly, but I partied extensively and dabbled in drugs. Once again, I found myself pregnant. This pregnancy was the motivation I needed to get my act together. I moved home and finished the one class I needed to get an associate’s degree, and I picked up additional classes at the local technical college. After graduating from college with a couple of two-year degrees and then a bachelor’s degree, I felt like I had my act together. Still, two dates continued to haunt me: April 26th, the day I’d terminated the first pregnancy, and November 22nd, the day the baby was due. In July 2005, I got married to a wonderful man who was willing to accept me, my son and all of my baggage. We were fortunate to become pregnant that August, with a due date of May 23rd. We were ecstatic, and two ultrasounds at the beginning of the pregnancy revealed a healthy, growing baby. It wasn’t until our routine ultrasound in late December that we found out we were having twin boys. They pushed up my due date to the week of April 26th. I didn’t want to have the babies on that day. I had always vowed that I would think of my unborn baby daily, to somehow repent for what I’d taken away from that child. I felt like I needed to leave April 26th as a day of mourning. It was sacred in my mind. At a routine checkup on the morning of April 26th, my doctor found that I was five centimeters dilated. It was time to have my babies. As much as I was ready to meet my boys, I choked back tears and confided in her about the irony of the date. She held my hand and offered me different options, but I decided that God had His hand in this, and I needed to do what was intended. Although I am ashamed to admit it, despite the fact that my faith in God is true, I couldn’t get it out of the back of my mind that this was His opportunity to take something away from me as I had done thirteen years ago. Eleven hours later, I pushed out the first baby—a four-pound, eleven-ounce miracle. We knew the second baby was breech, and the plan was to turn him around and deliver him normally. After the expert medical staff turned him around and all was going as planned, he stuck his arm out in one last attempt to enjoy some space to himself. In their efforts to push his arm back in to deliver his head first, the cord got pinched between his arm and his head. With no vital signs on the delivery room monitors, my mind raced with the penance I must be paying now. Surely, the Hail Marys and Our Fathers had been enough. Surely, the guilt I’d carried with me for thirteen years had signified my repentance. My second baby was born via emergency C-section, all five pounds, fifteen ounces of healthy baby boy. After a very brief stay in the NICU, the babies were released to our care. For weeks after I had the twins, amidst the feelings of being overwhelmed and ecstatic, I could not help but question why God had not allowed me to keep that day to mourn and remember every year. I swear Prevention is better than cure. ====================================
