Testimonials
It's harder to work through the problem than being given the answer. But when I was looking at my required college curriculum, I realized that this work helped me prepare better for college. You understand the methods for solving the problem, instead of a teacher handing you the formula. You understand why it works that way.
Senior, (4th year of CPM)
We are already seeing the benefits of the program (after 3 years). Students seem to be better prepared for higher level math courses and stronger results are showing up on various standardized tests.
Peter, Director of Curriculum and Instruction
My daughter has always struggled with mathematics. But with CPM she began to like math and really understands what she is learning. All of the hands-on learning tools, like the Algebra tiles, have really helped her to finally succeed in math class.
Parent of CPM Student
One of the main things I've heard from the teachers is that the structure of the lessons gives them the ability to quickly identify how individuals, small groups and the entire class are doing during a lesson. As a result the teachers are able to interact with students or facilitate activities to provide immediate responses. Students are less likely to fall through the cracks and students continue to progress at a productive pace.
Travis, Math Coordinator
Students are organized into study teams and work on problem-based applications, team strategies and real-world applications. Many algebra teachers feel reenergized and are having more fun teaching math with the CPM approach. Algebra classes focus on both basic skills and problem solving strategies that are used to help students relate to and understand the concepts behind the problems. Our students are being taught Algebra in a more rigorous and relevant manner. It's really about discovering the math, rather than being told the math.

Meaningful Homework and CPM
I do not grade homework. I have been teaching a long time, so I have tired everything (see the list of blogs I have written about homework at the end of this post). Over the years I have graded homework for correctness and completion. In most cases I found that homework grades artificially inflated a students grades, and in some cases brought students grades down. Most importantly, because of help from friends, tutors and parents, homework grades rarely represent what the students actually know.
I would love for my students to engage with math outside of class time for about 20 minutes a day. I do not want my students feeling lost, overwhelmed, or frustrated at home if they do not understand the homework. And I want the students to feel that the homework is important because it is relevant to the work that we do in class.
I do not grade homework, but I do walk around each day to see if students had any questions on their homework (check if students are doing it). If they do not, I have them fill out a Homework Responsibility Sheet that I keep on file. Still, without the promise of a grade, homework completion has not been as consistent as I would like. I use the CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) curriculum, and the spiraling homework is an important part of the curriculum, as the problems increase in difficulty each time they appear in the Review/Preview. In CPM, the class lessons are a set of problems the students work through as a team in a “guided” discovery model. Then, they have a set of spiraling problems called “Review / Preview” that they do for homework. Since the homework is spiraling, it is not what the students have done in math classes before (example: 2 – 30 evens of the same exact type of problem they did in the lesson). So, some of my students do not feel that the homework is related to classwork. Additionally, the spiraling homework can be challenging if students have forgotten how to do a concept. So over Christmas Break, I came up with a new homework system.
Instead of assigning the “Review / Preview” problems at the end of the section for homework, I assign ONE problem from the next section.
This problem is usually the very first problem we would have worked on in class the next day. Usually the first problem is not too difficult for them to do, because it is an introductory problem that reviews past skills as an introduction to a new concept. When students come in the next day, they get the ONE problem out and talk about their answers. I walk around the room to check students answers and to see if everyone is participating. Once we are finished reviewing this problem, we can jump right into the next problem in the lesson. This “jump starts” the lesson, enabling us to finish the section early. And then, the students have time to work on their “Review / Preview” in class. This way they have each other, and me, as a resource while they tackle the more challenging review problems.
My students absolutely love the new system. The work that they are doing at home is not too difficult, and connects to the work that we are doing in class. The more difficult “Review / Preview” homework is done in class where other students and I can help them. I did have some students not doing the ONE problem when I first switched over, but since it was the first problem of the lesson, they felt lost through most of class, even when their classmates tried to catch them up. This has encouraged more consistent completion of their ONE homework problem. As I tell them, everyone usually has the time to do just ONE problem, right?
UPDATE: We just reached the end of the chapter, and there were some important problems that we did not get to during class time, as it’s difficult for some students to finish all of the Review/Preview problems during class time. At the end of the chapter I assign the closure problems. There usually aren’t that many closure problems and the kids are always asking for more practice. So, I went back through the chapter and re-assigned the important problems that most students were not able to get to in addition to their closure problems. It did not add that many problems as I was careful not to assign duplicates, especially if they were easier ones that the closure problems. Since we work on closure problems in class, I am excited to know that the kids will have done almost all of the Review / Preview, in class, for probably the first time ever. I definitely expect this to strengthen their skills!

Love this idea. We use CPM as well and struggled with having time for homework review each day. We painstakingly went through and aligned each review/preview problem to one of our learning targets and now give students weekly “choice” assignments where they pick a certain number of problems based on learning targets where they need continued practice. I love the element of student self assessment and many more students buy in to the value of their homework because they see how practing their needed learning targets translates to higher formative/summarize assessment scores which is what we base our grades on.
I assigned standards to each hw problem as well! It’s still so tough for them to find enough time to do it though. And students don’t know how to do all of the problem, so I also give them optional Delta Math per standard. It’s a learning process! If you try this and have suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
How do you have time to do the review/preview problems during class? Sounds like a great idea! Do you do all the review/preview during class? Are they responsible for doing all of them? Is there some way you check?
I am having serious problems with homework. I hate assigning it because of the massive amount of copying. Most of them don’t use homework properly and it makes me crazy. I am looking for a new plan.
Students do not get through all of them. I have them do the most difficult, newer concepts in class. Once those are finished, they move on to the problems that are more review. I have them chose the ones they feel will be most challenging. This way, everyone is working on different problems, so there really isn’t much copying. I don’t grade or check homework bc so many students just do it to get the check or the grade, not for understanding – which defeats the point. Good luck! I know it’s a struggle!
You have clearly done your homework on this topic. What stands out for me is that by assigning just one problem you encourage a sense of manageability while also cultivating a habit. One problem per day becomes an avenue for math thinking that is doable and over time recognizable as time well invested. I teach PE. When I spend 5-7 minutes stretching every day, I notice that become more flexible over time. You may well be offering your students an even greater service by creating the conditions for long term efficacy in math and perhaps other areas.
I love your stretching analogy and am going to use it with my students! Thank you!
Well said! A constant struggle for me.
Thank you! It’s a struggle for all of us. It’s hard to convince every kid to do it, even when you make it relevant.
Love this idea! Will try it and let you know how it goes. We teach blocks every other day. What are your strategies for keeping students moving forward during class. I lose 25% of them, and I sometimes I just let it go bc I want to focus on the students who are trying to get educated. Thoughts? Thanks Julie!
My students work in groups, so that helps to keep all students going. But sometimes, whole groups can get distracted. I stop their group work intermittently throughout class to have whole group discussions, then start them off again. If a group isn’t moving forward, I will just have them skip working on the problem we just summarized and start fresh on the next problem. This keeps them moving along and helps keep them motivated, as sometimes students can get quagmired on certain problems.
Since reading problem sets out of the book can get old, I try to mix up how the students are working from day to day. Most days I have at least one problem where they must work through it for a few minutes on their own, and then I have them share out with their group. Some days we do Desmos for part or all of the lesson, which they love. On days when there are only one or two large problems, I project one problem at a time on the board for everyone to see and then let them use white boards.
I’m excited to hear how this works in your classroom! Let me know how it goes. 🙂
Our district is looking to adopt CPM for next year as we are scheduled to get new curriculum. We piloted from the program and really liked it but agree that the homework was a lot and did not have the desired results for our students. As a department we have discussed your post and had a couple of questions. First, do you check in the problem that is assigned for homework on a completion basis? Second, how do the students who do not complete the assigned problem fare the next day? Do you feel that they are able to get “caught up” well enough with their group discussion. Thank you! As we are looking at the possibility of adopting this curriculum it is wonderful to hear how other people are handling similar problems in their classes (especially when they are finding success!)
Yes, I only check it for completion, not accuracy. However I do go around to make sure their problem is accurate as they are discussing it in their groups. Usually at least two kids will have an accurate answer and that helps out students who may have missed it.
If they do not complete the problem, I have them sign a Homework Responsibility Form. Students who do not do the problem usually start “doing it” as soon as they sit down so they can catch up. They continue working while the other students review their answers. They rarely have time to finish it, but they at least hear the conversation. So while not totally up to speed, they are caught up enough to move on to the next question with their team. I’ve also put a couple of these questions (like the exact homework problem) as a quiz question. That has really motivated them!
One more thing I just did is go back through the chapter and re-assign important problems that we didn’t get to when I assign their closure. There aren’t that many closure problems and the kids are always asking for more practice. I found that this is the perfect way to give them more practice, while ensuring they got to any important homework problems we did not have time to get through during class time.
Good luck with your adoption! Year 1 was the hardest as we all adjusted, but it has been worth it! I love the curriculum, I was just struggling with the homework completion. With this new method, I feel like the whole thing is falling into place! It’s magical!

How should I be formatting my homework?
Neat homework can aid your comprehension and might make your teacher like you better. Purplemath's " Homework Guidelines for Mathematics " will give you a leg up, explaining in clear terms what your math teacher is looking for. The Guidelines link to examples of common errors, and demonstrate techniques that your instructors will love! In addition, students who get in the habit of explaining themselves clearly in their homework gain greater understanding of what they're doing, and therefore tend to do much better on their tests.
English teachers tell their students explicitly how to format their papers: what fonts, what page margins, what style guides, etc. Math teachers, on the other hand, frequently just complain amongst themselves in the faculty lounge about how messy their students' work is. Meanwhile, their students wonder why they've lost points on homework and tests.
Study these Guidelines , print out this " formatting " PDF, and improve your learning, retention, and test scores. Don't leave easy points on the table!

How can I measure my study skills?
Many students, from time to time, wonder, "Do I have what it takes to succeed in math?" Much of one's success or failure in algebra can be laid at the feet of one's study habits. Do you have good math study habits? Take this survey and find out.

A health psychologist was interested in the effects of vitamin supplements on the immune system. Three groups of adults were exposed (in a highly ethical way) to the cold virus; one group took no supplements for a week before exposure, another had vitamin C supplements, and a third had multivitamins (excluding C). The severity of the cold was measured as a percentage (0% = not contracted, 100% very severe symptoms). The psychologist also measured the number of cigarettes that each person smoked per day, as smoking suppresses the immune system. The psychologist was interested in the differences in the severity of the illnesses across different vitamin groups accounting for cigarette usage. What technique should be used to analyse these data?
A. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVA
B. Two-way independent ANOVA

The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT isn't the only one worth trying
Since the launch of ChatGPT , AI chatbots have been all of the rave because of their ability to do such a wide range of tasks which can help you with both your personal and work life. At your command, AI chatbots can write code , compose emails, draft a report, generate art , write Excel formulas for you , and much more.
However, because ChatGPT reached worldwide recognition , competitors were motivated to make their own versions, and, as a result, there are so many options on the market to choose from with different strengths, use cases, difficulty levels, and other nuances.
Also: The best AI image generators: Tested and reviewed
For the last year and a half, I have taken a deep dive into the world of AI, testing as many AI tools as I could get my hands on--including dozens of AI chatbots. Using my findings, as well as those of other ZDNET AI experts, I put together a list of the best AI chatbots and AI writers on the market.
The list details everything you need to know before choosing your next AI assistant, including what it's best for, pros, cons, cost, its large language model (LLM), and more. So whether you are entirely new to AI chatbots, or have used plenty before, this list should help you discover a new chatbot you haven't used before.
What is the best AI chatbot right now?
Thanks to its sourcing abilities, free internet access, and advanced LLM model, Microsoft Copilot is my first choice for the best AI chatbot. Keep reading to see how its features compare to others like ChatGPT, You.com, and more.
The best AI chatbots of 2024
Microsoft copilot, best ai chatbot overall.
- Access to the internet
- Links back to sources
- Uses OpenAI's most advanced LLM
- Grounded in Bing
Copilot f eatures: OpenAI's most advanced LLM, GPT-4 Turbo | Has access to the internet | Works like a search engine with information on current events | Free
In February last year, Microsoft unveiled a new AI-improved Bing, now known as Copilot, which runs on GPT-4 Turbo, the newest version of OpenAI's language model systems. As of May 4 of last year, Copilot moved from limited preview to open preview, meaning that now everyone can access it for free.
Also: What is Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)? Here's everything you need to know
When I use a chatbot, I typically reach for Copilot because I found that it solved two major issues with ChatGPT, including access to current events and linking back to the sources it retrieved its answer for free. It is also the only way to access OpenAI's most advanced LLM--GPT-4 Turbo--for free.
Copilot is free to use and offers a series of other features that make it an attractive alternative, including multi-modal inputs, image generation within the chatbot, and a standalone app.
Best original AI chatbot
- Writing skills
- STEM knowledge
- Conversational
- Not always available
- Not connected to the internet
ChatGPT features: Uses OpenAI's GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 (if subscribed) | Can generate text, solve math problems, and code | Impressive conversation capabilities | Free to the public right now
ChatGPT is a conversational AI chatbot by OpenAI that can produce text for you based on any prompt you input, generating emails, essays, poems, grocery lists, letters, and much more.
In addition to writing for you, ChatGPT can chat with you about simple or complex topics such as "What are colors?" or "What is the meaning of life?" If you want other technical assistance, ChatGPT is also proficient in STEM and can write and debug code , and even solve complex math equations.
Also: How to use ChatGPT
ChatGPT was released November 2022, and because of its massive success , it became the blueprint for many other chatbots to enter the scene, with many being found on the list now. Therefore, if you are interested in AI chatbots, you'll likely want to try the original that began the craze -- ChatGPT.
The downsides of the chatbot include that it is sometimes at capacity due to its immense popularity, doesn't have access to the internet, and has a knowledge cutoff.
I still reach for ChatGPT as, despite its limitations, it is an incredibly capable chatbot. However, when I do, I make sure that my queries do not rely on the most recent information to be accurate. For example, some good use cases to use ChatGPT for are brainstorming text or coding.
Anthrophic's Claude
Best ai chatbot for summarizing documents.
- Upload document support
- Chat controls
- Light and dark mode
- Unclear usage cap
- Knowledge cutoff
Claude features: Powered by Claude 3 model family | Accepts document uploads | Trained with information up to early 2023 | Free
Anthropic launched its first AI assistant, Claude, in February 2023, and in less than a year, it has secured a spot as one of the best chatbots in the space. Like the other leading competitors, Anthropic can conversationally answer prompts with anything you need assistance with, including coding, math, writing, research, and more.
Also: 4 things Claude AI can do that ChatGPT can't
Personally, the biggest advantage of this chatbot is that it can accept document uploads to help read, analyze, and summarize uploaded files. To upload a file, all I had to do was click on the paper clip icon next to the text box and click on the document I wanted to upload. Then, I was able to conversationally ask for the help I wanted with the document, including document summaries or clarifications on specific topics found within the document.
Also: This free tool from Anthropic helps you create better prompts for your AI chatbot
Claude is in free open beta, and, as a result, has context window and daily message limits which can vary based on demand, so if you are looking to use the chatbot regularly, upgrading to Claude Pro may be a better option, as it offers at least five times the usage limits compared to the free version for $20 a month.
Perplexity.ai
The best ai chatbot for prompt ideation.
- Links to sources
- Access to internet
- Paid subscription required for GPT-4 access
- some irrelevant suggestions
Perplexity AI features: OpenAI GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 for subscribers | Has access to the internet and current events | Provides prompt suggestions to get chats started | Free
Perplexity AI is a free AI chatbot that is connected to the internet, provides sources, and has a very enjoyable UI. As soon as you visit the site , using the chatbot is straightforward. All you have to do is type your prompt into the "ask anything" box to get started. The first time I ever visited this chatbot, I was able to get started within seconds.
On top of the text box, the chatbot states, "Where knowledge begins," and the title could not be more fitting.
Also: ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini: Which is the best AI chatbot?
As soon as you click on the textbox, it has a series of suggested prompts which are all mostly rooted in news. It also has suggested prompts underneath the box on a variety of evergreen topics. All you have to do is click on any of the suggestions to learn more about the topic and chat about it. Additionally, Perplexity provides related topic questions you can click on to keep the conversation going.
Because of the extensive prompts it gives users to try, this is a great chatbot for taking deep dives into topics that you wouldn't have necessarily thought of before, encouraging discovery and experimentation. I personally deep dove into a couple of random topics myself, including the history of birthday cakes, and I enjoyed every second of it.
Other perks include that there is an app for both iOS and Android, allowing you to also tinker with the chatbot while you're on the go, footnotes are provided after every answer with sources you can visit and the answers nearly always include photos and graphics.
Best AI chatbot for businesses and marketers
- 50 different writing templates
- Copyediting features
- Plagiarism checker
- Need a subscription to try
Jasper features: Uses different LLMs, including GPT-4 | Summarizes texts and generates paragraphs and product descriptions | Checks for plagiarism and grammar | Starts at $39 per month with an annual subscription
Jasper is a tool exclusively meant for users who are looking to incorporate an AI chatbot into their workflow because there is no free plan, and you can't access the chatbot otherwise. For example, when I tried using it myself, I was met with dead ends unless I subscribed. The least expensive option, the Creator plan, is geared towards freelancers and solo-preneurs and is $49 a month. However, if you rely on an AI chatbot to generate copy for your business, the investment may be worth it.
Also: ChatGPT vs. Copilot: Which AI chatbot is better for you?
With Jasper, you can input a prompt for what you want to be written, and it will write it for you, just like ChatGPT would. The major difference with Jasper is that it has an extensive amount of tools to produce better copy. Jasper can check for grammar and plagiarism and write in over 50 different templates, including blog posts, Twitter threads, video scripts, and more. It also offers SEO insights and can even remember your brand voice, facilitating the creation of copy.
Whether you are an individual, small team, or larger business looking into optimizing your workflow, before you take the plunge, you can access a trial or demo.
Best AI chatbot that functions as a search engine
- Readily available
- Source Citing
- Some answers stronger than others
- Subscription required for GPT-4 access
You.com features: GPT-4 with subscription | Lists sources for the text it generates | Unlike most other Chatbots, uses Google sources | Free
You.com (previously known as YouChat) is an AI assistant that functions similarly to the way a search engine would. Like Google, you can enter any question, or topic you'd like to learn information on, and immediately be met with real-time web results, in addition to a conversational response.
For example, when I asked, "Can you share some pictures of adorable dog breeds?" the chatbot provided six different web links, as well as the seven different pictures it pulled from the web, a conversational answer and related news, as seen in the photo.
The chatbot can also provide technical assistance, with answers to anything you input, including math, coding, translating, and writing prompts. A huge pro for this chatbot is that, because it lacks popularity, you can hop on at any time and ask away.
Chatsonic by Writesonic
Best ai chatbot for article writers.
- Variety of use cases
- Need to sign-in
- A bit of a lag
Chatsonic features: Powered by GPT-3.5. or GPT-4 depending on subscription | Aware of current events, whereas ChatGPT is trained up to 2021 | Extensive feature suite, including voice dictation and image generation | Starts at $12 per month
Chatsonic is a dependable AI chatbot, with a function as an AI writing tool. It functions much like ChatGPT, allowing users to input prompts for assistance on a variety of tasks. However, it includes the ability to web search, generate images, and access PDF assistance, which ChatGPT lacks.
The Writesonic platform offers tools that are specifically meant to help generate stories, including Instant Article Writer, which generates an article from a single click; Article Rewriter, which rephrases existing content; and Article Writer 5, which generates articles using ranking competitors.
Other tools that facilitate the creation of articles include SEO Checker and Optimizer, AI Editor, Content Rephraser, Paragraph Writer, and more. There is a free version, which gets you access to some of the features; however, there is a 50 generations per day limit. The monthly cost starts at $12 per month but goes all the way up to $250 per month depending on the number of words and amount of users needed.
Gemini (formerly Google Bard)
Best ai chatbot if you're a loyal google user.
- Access to Google
- Good text editing skills
- Can't help much with code
Gemini features: Powered by a finetuned version of Gemini Pro | Includes a "Google it" feature | Generates clear text and images quickly | Free
Gemini is Google's conversational AI chatbot that functions the most similarly to Copilot, sourcing its answers from the web, providing footnotes, and even generating images within its chatbot. Since its initial release in March 2023, the chatbot has undergone several upgrades, with the latest version being the most optimized it has ever been.
Also: What is Google's Gemini AI tool (formerly Bard)? Everything you need to know
The highlight of this chatbot is that it is rooted in Google technology, search engines, and applications, and if you are a loyal Google user, you will feel familiar with the chatbot's UI and its offerings. For example, unlike most of the chatbots on this list, Google does not use an LLM in the GPT series but instead uses a model made by Google.
"Gemini is slowly becoming a full Google experience thanks to Extensions folding the wide range of Google applications into Gemini," said ZDNET writer Maria Diaz when reviewing the chatbot. "Gemini users can add extensions for Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Flights, and Google Hotels, giving them a more personalized and extensive experience."
If you subscribe to Google's new 'AI Premium Plan,' you not only get access to the most advanced Google models in Gemini, such as Ultra 1.0, but you also get access to Gemini for Workspace, previously known as Duet AI, which infuses Google's AI assistance throughout its productivity apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet.
Socratic by Google
Best ai chatbot for kids and students.
- Educational
- Easy to use
- Doesn't write text
- No desktop version
Socratic features: From Google | Type in any question to generate a response | Includes fun graphics | Supports scanning worksheets to get a specially curated answer | Free
If you want your child to also take advantage of AI to lighten their workload, but still have some limits, Socratic is for you. With Socratic, children can type in any question they may have about what they are learning in school, and Socratic will generate a conversational, human-like response with fun, unique graphics to help break down the concept.
"It's a powerful studying tool that could help students double-check their homework, or get across the last hurdle if a question or formula just isn't making sense. And using the app is as easy as using Snapchat or talking to Siri," said former ZDNET contributor Jason Cipriani, when reviewing the app.
The app, available on the App Store and the Google App Store, also has a feature that lets your kid scan their worksheet to get a specially curated answer. The app does have some limitations; for example, it will not just write an essay or story when prompted. However, this could be a positive thing because it curbs your child's temptation to get a chatbot, like ChatGPT, to write their essay for them.
HuggingChat
Best open-source chatbot.
- Cutomizable
- Intermediate/advanced skills requires
- Required to create an account
Socratic features: Clean, Chat-GPT inspired interface | entirely customizable | great for developers or AI fanatics | secure alternative | Free
As seen by the list above, plenty of great chatbot options are on the market. However, if you are on the search for a chatbot that serves your use case specifically, you can always build an entirely customizable new one. HuggingChat is an open-source chatbot developed by Hugging Face that can be used as a regular chatbot or customized for your needs.
Also : Want to build your own AI chatbot? Say hello to open-source HuggingChat
As ZDNET's David Gewirtz unpacked in his hands-on article , you may not want to depend on HuggingChat as your go-to primary chatbot. However, it is a good interface to build your own chatbot on. As Gewirtz said himself: "If you want something that you control, you can use HuggingChat to build a chatbot where you have visibility into every aspect of its functioning. You can choose to make that chatbot available online to other users and provide transparency to all users."
What is the best AI chatbot?
The best overall AI chatbot is Copilot due to its exceptional performance, versatility, and free availability. It uses OpenAI's cutting-edge GPT-4 language model, making it highly proficient in various language tasks, including writing, summarization, translation, and conversation. Moreover, it works like a search engine with information on current events.
Another advantage of Copilot is its availability to the public at no cost. Despite its immense popularity, Copilot remains free, making it an incredible resource for students, writers, and professionals who need a reliable and free AI chatbot.
Although there are occasional capacity blocks, OpenAI is working on releasing a professional version of ChatGPT that will be quicker and always accessible at a monthly cost.
Which AI chatbot is right for you?
While Copliot is my personal favorite, your use case may be hyper-specific or have certain demands. If you need a constant, reliable AI chatbot, other alternatives might be better suited for you. If you just want an AI chatbot that produces clean, reliable, business-ready copy, for example, then Jasper is for you. If you want to play around with an AI chatbot that isn't always at capacity, YouChat might be the best option.
Lastly, if there is a child in your life, Socratic might be worth checking out. See our breakdown below:
Factors to consider when choosing a chatbot
Since there are so many chatbots on the market, picking the right one can get confusing. Some factors to consider to help narrow down those options are:
- Large Language Model (LLM)
- Knowledge cutoff
- Access to the internet
- Linking to sources
- Best use cases
How did I choose these AI chatbots?
In order to curate the list of best AI chatbots and AI writers, I looked at the capabilities of each individual program including the individual uses each program would excel at. As an AI reporter, I was also sure to test each one myself. Other factors I looked at were reliability, availability, and cost.
- Individual use case: AI chatbots have many use cases, often acting as a tool for productivity and easier workflow. I included a variety that can serve as ideation, education, and content creation tools.
- Reliability: I kept information accuracy a priority during my testing.
- Availability : ChatGPT is popular, but not always available. I selected alternatives that don't have a user limit and are available at all times.
- Cost: Many of these AI programs are free, but some require monthly memberships. I included a mix of both, keeping budget-friendliness in mind.
What is an AI chatbot?
An AI chatbot (also called AI writer) refers to a type of artificial intelligence-powered program that is capable of generating written content from a user's input prompt. AI chatbots are capable of writing anything from a rap song to an essay upon a user's request. The extent of what each chatbot is specifically able to write about depends on its individual capabilities including whether it is connected to a search engine or not.
How do AI chatbots work?
AI chatbots use language models to train the AI to produce human-like responses. Some are connected to the web and that is how they have up-to-date information, while others depend solely on the information they are trained with.
How much do AI chatbots cost?
AI chatbot programs vary in cost with some being entirely free and others costing as much as $600 a month. Many like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and YouChat are entirely free to use.
What is the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer?
The main difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer is the type of output they generate and their primary function.
In the past, an AI writer was used specifically to generate written content, such as articles, stories, or poetry, based on a given prompt or input. An AI writer's output is in the form of written text that mimics human-like language and structure. On the other hand, an AI chatbot is designed to conduct real-time conversations with users in text or voice-based interactions. The primary function of an AI chatbot is to answer questions, provide recommendations, or even perform simple tasks, and its output is in the form of text-based conversations.
While the terms AI chatbot and AI writer are now used interchangeably by some, the original distinction was that an AI writer was used for generating written content, while an AI chatbot was used for conversational purposes. However, with the introduction of more advanced AI technology, such as ChatGPT, the line between the two has become increasingly blurred. Some AI chatbots are now capable of generating text-based responses that mimic human-like language and structure, similar to an AI writer.

Artificial Intelligence

Will I ever need math? A mathematician explains how math is everywhere – from soap bubbles to Pixar movies
Curious Kids is a series for children of all ages. If you have a question you’d like an expert to answer, send it to [email protected] .
Will I ever need math besides for school or work? – Hadassah G., age 9, New Jersey
It can be easy to think that you need math only to do your algebra or geometry homework or if you have a job as an engineer. But, in fact, math pops up everywhere – even in the soap bubbles in your kitchen sink.
While washing dishes when I was 13, I noticed that the soap bubbles formed tiny 3D polygons, packed together like a honeycomb, but not all of these shapes were perfectly round. Why did some of the bubbles look like hexagons? Why were others shaped like squares full of air? Why didn’t I see any star-shaped bubbles, or bubbles with spikes?
When I learned that math could help answer these questions, I thought that was so cool! Now, as a professor of mathematics who studies how people learn math through play , I understand why bubbles are naturally lazy . I even studied the math behind the reason I saw only some shapes in soapy dishwater.
Besides helping explain the behavior of bubbles and other curiosities of nature, math is likely part of many of your everyday activities, along with the technology you enjoy and even the inner workings of your brain. Doing math isn’t just about computing, memorizing, solving an equation or doing word problems by yourself. It’s really about creative problem-solving and logical thinking with other people.
Math in everyday life
Many topics you learn in elementary school – like fractions, percentages and measurements – are useful in everyday life.
For example, if you want to build a fence around your house, paint your walls a new color or with a design , or sew yourself a new outfit or quilt , all of those activities require knowledge about measurement and scaling. More complicated construction projects, such as building a treehouse , require lots of mathematical problem-solving skills.
Once you’ve laid out the plans for one of these projects, you need to buy all the materials. Percentages – which are special kinds of fractions – are especially important to understand when managing money. Understanding percentages can help you budget your money and increase your net worth .
Beyond budgeting, you might find yourself using percentages when cooking a double batch of brownies, determining how much medicine to take when you’re sick or understanding the weather forecast .
Your favorite technology needs math
Math is an essential tool that animators use to make movies.
Studios like Pixar rely on ideas from geometry to bring characters like Ember from “Elemental” to life. With an understanding of geometric transformations like reflections, rotations and translations, you can use your computer to make your own animations.
Coordinate systems, which are fundamental to geometry, show up in video games like Minecraft. The 2D Minecraft world uses a 2D coordinate system – with an x-axis and a y-axis – where you can move north, south, east or west. In the 3D Minecraft world, there’s also a z-axis, allowing you to move up and down. Middle and high school teachers can even use Minecraft to help students learn math concepts.
Many high-paying jobs use math , especially probability – again, fractions. Understanding probability helps doctors identify how effective medical treatments are, informs coaches about ways their teams can improve and aids cryptographers in keeping private information – like your email password or ATM PIN – secret. Cryptography combines probability with number theory to create secret codes that are difficult to crack.
Math helps your brain
Math can have a big impact on your internal life, too. You can use math activities to train your brain the same way you would train your body for a sport. Doing math helps your brain become flexible so you can better handle new tasks and ideas of all kinds.
Even doing things that don’t look like your math homework, such as crossword puzzles, word searches and board games like Set and Blokus , are deeply mathematical activities that help your brain get stronger . This kind of mental training helps the brain pay attention and solve problems and improves memory. A strong working memory supports brain functions that lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia .
Having a stronger, more flexible brain also aids quantitative literacy , which can help you make sense of graphs that appear in the media, reflect critically about news and understand health and financial information.
Math can even help you outsmart artificial intelligence . With the rise of AI, it’s important to be able to think creatively, reason logically and make connections between concepts – whether mathematical or not. Puzzling through a difficult math problem nurtures these skills, even if you don’t get the right answer right away.
It’s important to remember that doing math doesn’t require you to be fast or to get the correct answer right away. In fact, you can learn a lot by getting the wrong answer . Working with other people can also help you to make sure you really understand the problem and builds communication and teamwork skills .
Math is so much more than memorizing times tables and filling out homework problem sets. So next time you kick back to watch your favorite animated movie, or start saving up for a fancy new tech gadget, hopefully you’ll appreciate how math is woven into so many parts of life.

Ratings and Reviews
This app is good but….
This app is good but one time I was using it but the first step was really confusing. The rest of this app is great but I recommend that you change it to showing the way how to do it with numbers instead. It’s way easier. So anyways my point is this app is great but it needs adjustments!
