Earlier, woods are burnt for cooking purposes, coal was used to run trains and other locomotives, carry out industrial processes, glow street lights, generate electricity, etc.

Fuels can be fossil fuels or biofuels. Fossil fuels are formed from the dead remains of plants and animals. They take millions of years in their formation. And hence they are considered non-renewable resources. Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are some examples of fossil fuels. However, fossil fuels produce a large amount of carbon during combustion which is harmful to our environment. Carbon is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

On the other hand, biofuels are the fuels generated from plant and animal wastes. They are environmentally friendly. We should focus to shift our usage of non-renewable resources to biofuels.

Types Of Fuel

Fuels can be present in different forms. According to their state of presence, they are categorized as solid fuel, liquid fuel, and fuel gas.

  • Solid Fuel: The type of fuel which is present in solid form and can produce energy through combustion. It means solid fuels can be burnt to produce energy. Some common examples of solid fuels are dunk, wood, charcoal, etc. Solid fuels are mainly used for household activities like cooking.
  • Liquid Fuel: Fuels are also present in the liquid form known as liquid fuel. Most of the liquid fuels are fossil fuels. Some liquid fuels are kerosene, diesel, petroleum, etc. They usually generate kinetic energy. These types of fuels are easy to use and transport.

In India, under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, an organization PCRA (Petroleum Conservation Research Association) was established in 1978. It is responsible for generating awareness among people regarding saving fuel.

The PCRA conducted a month-long save fuel campaign by the name ‘SAKSHAM’ on 16 Jan 2020. The campaign SAKSHAM stands for Sanrakshan Kshamata Mahotsava. The main aim of this campaign was to encourage save fuel techniques.

This program was supported on a large scale by popular gas distribution companies like GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited), BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited), HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited), IOC (Indian Oil Corporation), etc.

We are living at present, and we don’t bother about the future. Everybody talks to save fuel, save energy but in reality, nobody takes a single step towards saving the future. People organize rallies on vehicles which is directly wasting fuel, but the irony is that they do so just to encourage the public to save fuels. The selfishness of humans will cost them an amount that will be very difficult to repay.

One of the main reasons behind saving fuels is that many resources are non-renewable and we are fully dependent on them for our survival. People are using them as if they are unlimited. Therefore, measures should be taken to control the usage of resources that are limited on the Earth.

However, apart from ending soon the burning of various fuels especially fossil fuels produce harmful gases like carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gases. They are directly responsible for increasing the Earth’s temperature. If not taken seriously, the effect of global warming is not far away. We all are well aware of the difficulties we could face due to global warming. These harmful gases will be responsible for acidifying the oceans. The aquatic species will also be harmed.  It could raise various respiratory issues in humans.

Therefore, to save the environment and to save our lives, it is very important to try every possible step to save fuel.

How To Save Fuel/ Strategies To Save Fuel

Most of the fuel is consumed by vehicles. Today at outside, we can see vehicles more than people. Therefore, we should take some preventive steps to control the fuel efficiency in vehicles. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Quality Product In Cars: One should prefer quality products (spare parts) for vehicles like cars. Quality products will reduce the unnecessary requirement of fuel.
  • Promote Carpooling: Carpooling refers to sharing a car when going to the same route. It is a good idea which will save fuel as well as money.
  • Limit The Usage Of Air Conditioners: In cars, air conditioners also consume fuel. Therefore, using it unnecessarily is the wastage of fuel. You can limit the use of air conditioners by opening the window wherever possible.
  • Off When Idle: One should always off the vehicle when not in use. For example, during the traffic. You can save at least a few drops of fuel by doing this.

How to achieve speed and scale in the clean energy transition

The Stanford Forum on the Science of Energy Transition brought together scientific experts, technology innovators, and industry leaders to explore practical pathways to a decarbonized future.

How do we transition to clean energy with enough speed and scale to prevent the most extreme impacts of climate change? This question loomed large for many of the speakers and participants at the Stanford Forum on the Science of Energy Transition , held on campus April 10 for an audience of students and invited guests.

To stabilize global temperatures, we need to find ways to reduce and remove our carbon emissions from Earth’s atmosphere by tens of gigatons every single year. By comparison, gas-powered vehicles in the U.S. together produce about a gigaton of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Many of the speakers agreed action over the next few decades is critical, and addressing climate change will require coordinated efforts across the scientific community, climate technology innovators, government, the private sector, and others to transition the world’s $100 trillion economy to clean energy.

The forum, co-hosted by the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and Stanford Management Company , convened experts to explore challenges and opportunities to transform the power grid, rethink renewable fuels, remove greenhouse gases from our atmosphere, and address energy issues in tandem with other sustainability concerns.

The forum served as a powerful example of how Stanford leaders are educating changemakers in energy and facilitating connections that will help bring insights from scientific research to decisions that will affect global sustainability.

“Today, the energy transition will require us to forge new pathways, but we can’t just blindly strike out. That will lead us down too many dead ends, and time is of the essence. Instead, the paths we choose must be informed by science,” said Robert Wallace, the chief executive officer of Stanford Management Company.

Consider speed and scale from the get-go

Decarbonizing global energy production is a tall order. That’s before you consider the rising demand for energy as countries develop and look for opportunities to increase mobility, communication, security, and economic prosperity, multiple speakers said.

U.S. clean energy projects are on hold due to bottlenecks in the process for permitting new transmission lines and grid interconnections. The queue of projects waiting for approval by transmission operators would effectively triple the size of our generating resource, said Rajeev Ram , a professor of electrical engineering at MIT. Removing some of those logistical barriers through AI, modeling, and software tools can help accelerate the timeline for projects that could provide clean energy to the grid, said Ram.

Yi Cui , the director of Stanford’s Sustainability Accelerator , is one of the leading experts developing batteries for renewable energy storage. Scholars in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability – which celebrated its first anniversary in September – have embraced a core philosophy of thinking about scale at the beginning of the design process, which is a good sign, Cui said.

For example, the relative scarcity of some elements – such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel – in current battery designs could limit their potential for large-scale production at low cost. Cui emphasized that scientists could focus on designing battery materials based on more widely available minerals, like zinc, manganese, and iron .

“We need to figure out for each of these technologies what is already going on at the gigaton-scale – like natural cycles, like agriculture – and see what we can do to tweak it in the right way so that you can create a market and use market mechanisms to scale it,” said Arun Majumdar , the inaugural dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Others highlighted the importance of driving down costs for companies and consumers. If innovators can eliminate the green premium – the cost of choosing a clean energy technology over a traditional source – for their products, they will be competitive in the market.

Meanwhile, incentives like subsidies for renewable energy will need to be supplemented with policies that actively discourage use of carbon-intensive resources. “If we’re serious about addressing climate change, we’ve got to have a price on carbon,” whether through direct pricing per ton or indirectly through regulation, said Majumdar.

Powered by electrons versus molecules

The grid is essentially a system of wires that transports electrons from power plants to consumers. However, grid electrification will only get us about halfway to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noted Sally Benson , the Precourt Family Professor, who moderated one of the panels.

Eighty percent of global energy comes from fossil fuels. Much of this comes in the form of liquid fossil fuels for transportation – cars, planes, ships, and some trains. The challenges of developing batteries and grid storage capable of providing electricity without interruption could limit electrification of some parts of the transportation sector. Instead, renewable fuels like hydrogen, biofuels, and fuels made primarily from captured carbon dioxide may help reduce carbon emissions from heavy-duty transportation.

“Our challenge is to think that the future is electrification, but that doesn’t mean that electrons are going to do everything for us directly,” said Anthony Kovscek , the Keleen and Carlton Beal Professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Hydrogen could help bridge the gap to carbon neutrality, said Eric Toone , managing director and technical lead at Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

“Hydrogen is pure, reactive chemical energy. If you have enough hydrogen, you can do anything,” he said.

Zara Summers is the chief science officer at LanzaTech, a company that makes chemicals and fuels from carbon dioxide captured from factories and other industrial sources.

LanzaTech has been working to develop ethanol alternatives that make use of carbon from municipal waste or industrial emissions. These alternatives could serve as effective drop-in replacements for liquid fuels like gasoline, with the added benefit of easy adoption by the public and ability to tap into existing supply chains, but many current economic incentives specifically benefit corn-based ethanol.

“If you’re going to go big, you have to be at cost parity or better. But, you also have to fight against policy that’s written with a solution in mind, not an outcome,” said Summers. She highlighted how designing policies that are flexible and adaptable to new innovations will help bring solutions to scale.

Science as the bedrock

In addition to the challenge of rapidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the forum also explored solutions for removing historic carbon emissions from the atmosphere. During a panel on greenhouse gas removal strategies , speakers turned the focus to more low-tech solutions: carbon cycles in nature. For example, Benson enthusiastically described enhanced weathering, which builds on a naturally occurring process where rain interacts with certain rocks to form a mild acid. This acid then reacts with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form solid compounds that permanently store carbon.

Chris Field , the director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment , cited research published last month which found that adding crushed basalt rocks for enhanced weathering could increase productivity and soil health on croplands .

“It really highlights where you can potentially accomplish these big co-benefits that can make something that’s a real challenge logistically or financially come into the realm of possibility,” said Field.

The energy transition touches all of the major social-environmental systems. A final panel brought together experts on freshwater, oceans and aquatic foods, and agricultural technology to explore cultivating resilience amid climate pressures. “Agriculture sits at the very center of many of the pressures that we’re putting on Earth’s systems,” said Jim Leape , co-director of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions .

During a fireside chat, Majumdar discussed emerging trends in clean energy with Steven Chu , the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences . They mentioned the “low-hanging fruit” of energy efficiency, the future of nuclear fusion, and balancing the energy transition with national and economic security. Nevertheless, Chu brought the conversation back to the critical role of new inventions.

“As a physicist, when I stand back and look at things: What really changed the world? New materials are actually what changed the world,” said Chu, a former U.S. Secretary of Energy who embodies the impact of science-based decision-making in energy systems as the first scientist to hold a Cabinet position.

From the steam engine and the agricultural revolution to semiconductors and nuclear fission, leaps forward in technology have enabled global-scale changes and development. Highlighting the vision for the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Majumdar noted that when research institutions like Stanford collaborate with public and private entities, they can serve as a place where scholars can serve as incubators for translating novel ideas into impact.

Electric vehicles are better for the climate than gas-powered cars, but many Americans are still reluctant to buy them. One reason: The larger upfront cost.

New data published Thursday shows that despite the higher sticker price, electric cars may actually save drivers money in the long-run.

To reach this conclusion, a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology calculated both the carbon dioxide emissions and full lifetime cost — including purchase price, maintenance and fuel — for nearly every new car model on the market.

They found electric cars were easily more climate friendly than gas-burning ones. Over a lifetime, they were often cheaper, too.

Climate scientists say vehicle electrification is one of the best ways to reduce planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. In the United States, the transportation sector is the largest source of emissions, most of which come from cars and trucks .

Jessika Trancik, an associate professor of energy studies at M.I.T. who led the research, said she hoped the data would “help people learn about how those upfront costs are spread over the lifetime of the car.”

For electric cars, lower maintenance costs and the lower costs of charging compared with gasoline prices tend to offset the higher upfront price over time. (Battery-electric engines have fewer moving parts that can break compared with gas-powered engines and they don’t require oil changes. Electric vehicles also use regenerative braking, which reduces wear and tear.)

The cars are greener over time, too, despite the more emissions-intensive battery manufacturing process. Dr. Trancik estimates that an electric vehicle’s production emissions would be offset in anywhere from six to 18 months, depending on how clean the energy grid is where the car is charging.

The new data showed hybrid cars, which run on a combination of fuel and battery power, and can sometimes be plugged in, had more mixed results for both emissions and costs. Some hybrids were cheaper and spewed less planet-warming carbon dioxide than regular cars, but others were in the same emissions and cost range as gas-only vehicles.

Traditional gas-burning cars were usually the least climate friendly option, though long-term costs and emissions spanned a wide range. Compact cars were usually cheaper and more efficient, while gas-powered SUVs and luxury sedans landed on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Dr. Trancik’s team released the data in an interactive online tool to help people quantify the true costs of their car-buying decisions — both for the planet and their budget. The new estimates update a study published in 2016 and add to a growing body of research underscoring the potential lifetime savings of electric cars.

Take the Tesla Model 3, the most popular electric car in the United States. The M.I.T. team estimated the lifetime cost of the most basic model as comparable to a Nissan Altima that sells for $11,000 less upfront. (That’s even though Tesla’s federal tax incentive for electric vehicles has ended.)

Toyota’s Hybrid RAV4 S.U.V. also ends up cheaper in the long run than a similar traditional RAV4, a national bestseller, despite a higher retail price.

The charts above use nationwide average prices for gasoline and electricity to estimate lifetime costs, but the results may shift depending on where potential buyers live. (The interactive tool allows users to input their local rates.)

Hawaii, Alaska and parts of New England have some of the highest average electricity costs , while parts of the Midwest, West and South tend to have lower rates. Gas prices are lower along the Gulf Coast and higher in California. But an analysis from the Union of Concerned Scientists still found that charging a vehicle was more cost effective than filling up at the pump across 50 major American cities. “We saw potential savings everywhere,” said David Reichmuth, a senior engineer for the group’s Clean Transportation Program.

Still, the upfront cost of an electric vehicle continues to be a barrier for many would-be owners.

The federal government offers a tax credit for some new electric vehicle purchases, but that does nothing to reduce the initial purchase price and does not apply to used cars. That means it disproportionately benefits wealthier Americans. Some states, like California, offer additional incentives. President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. has pledged to offer rebates that help consumers swap inefficient, old cars for cleaner new ones, and to create 500,000 more electric vehicle charging stations, too.

Chris Gearhart, director of the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, said electric cars will become more price competitive in coming years as battery prices drop. At the same time, new technologies to reduce exhaust emissions are making traditional cars more expensive. “With that trajectory, you can imagine that even immediately at the purchase price level, certain smaller sedans could reach purchase price parity in the next couple of years,” Dr. Gearhart said.

Although many fully electric vehicles (EVs) carry “zero emissions” badges, this claim is not quite true. Battery-electric cars may not emit greenhouse gases from their tailpipes, but some emissions are created in the process of building and charging the vehicles. Nevertheless, says Sergey Paltsev, Deputy Director of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, electric vehicles are clearly a lower-emissions option than cars with internal combustion engines. Over the course of their driving lifetimes, EVs will create fewer carbon emissions than gasoline-burning cars under nearly any conditions.

“We shouldn't claim victory that with this switch to electric cars, problem solved, we are going to have zero emissions,” he says. “No, that's not the case. But electric cars are actually much, much better in terms of the impact on the climate in comparison to internal combustion vehicles. And in time, that comparative advantage of electric cars is going to grow.”

One source of EV emissions is the creation of their large lithium-ion batteries . The use of minerals including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are crucial for modern EV batteries, requires using fossil fuels to mine those materials and heat them to high temperatures. As a result, building the 80 kWh lithium-ion battery found in a Tesla Model 3 creates between 2.5 and 16 metric tons of CO 2 (exactly how much depends greatly on what energy source is used to do the heating). 1 This intensive battery manufacturing means that building a new EV can produce around 80% more emissions than building a comparable gas-powered car. 2

But just like with gasoline cars, most emissions from today’s EVs come after they roll off the production floor. 3 The major source of EV emissions is the energy used to charge their batteries. These emissions, says Paltsev, vary enormously based on where the car is driven and what kind of energy is used there. The best case scenario looks like what’s happening today in Norway, Europe’s largest EV market: the nation draws most of its energy from hydropower, giving all those EVs a minuscule carbon footprint. In countries that get most of their energy from burning dirty coal, the emissions numbers for EVs don’t look nearly as good—but they’re still on par with or better than burning gasoline.

To illustrate how EVs create fewer emissions than their counterparts, Paltsev points to MIT’s Insights Into Future Mobility study from 2019. 4 This study looked at comparable vehicles like the Toyota Camry and Honda Clarity across their gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell configurations. The researchers found that, on average, gasoline cars emit more than 350 grams of CO 2 per mile driven over their lifetimes. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, meanwhile, scored at around 260 grams per mile of carbon dioxide, while the fully battery-electric vehicle created just 200 grams. Stats from the U.S. Department of Energy tell a similar story: Using the nationwide average of different energy sources, DOE found that EVs create 3,932 lbs. of CO 2 equivalent per year, compared to 5,772 lbs. for plug-in hybrids, 6,258 lbs. for typical hybrids, and 11,435 lbs. for gasoline vehicles. 5

MIT’s report shows how much these stats can swing based on a few key factors. For example, when the researchers used the average carbon intensity of America’s power grid , they found that a fully electric vehicle emits about 25 percent less carbon than a comparable hybrid car. But if they ran the numbers assuming the EV would charge up in hydropower-heavy Washington State, they found it would emit 61 percent less carbon than the hybrid. When they did the math for coal-heavy West Virginia, the EV actually created more carbon emissions than the hybrid, but still less than the gasoline car.

In fact, Paltsev says, it’s difficult to find a comparison in which EVs fare worse than internal combustion. If electric vehicles had a shorter lifespan than gas cars, that would hurt their numbers because they would have fewer low-emissions miles on the road to make up for the carbon-intensive manufacture of their batteries. Yet when the MIT study calculated a comparison in which EVs lasted only 90,000 miles on the road rather than 180,000 miles, they remained 15 percent better than a hybrid and far better than a gas car.

And while internal combustion engines are getting more efficient, EVs are poised to become greener by leaps and bounds as more countries add more clean energy to their mix. MIT’s report sees gasoline cars dropping from more than 350 grams of CO 2 per mile to around 225 grams by the year 2050. In that same span, however, battery EVs could drop to around 125 grams, and perhaps even down to 50 grams if the price of renewable energy were to drop significantly.

“Once we decarbonize the electric grid—once we get more and more clean sources to the grid—the comparison is getting better and better,” Paltsev says.

Hence we can clearly see we don’t run the fuels, but fuels run us. But what are “fuels”?

Fuels are those energy sources which the help of which various devices of daily use can be run, by using them in the same form or by converting one form of energy into another. Fuels can be categorized in two ways:-

  • Renewable energy- fuels that can be replenished after using.
  • Non- renewable energy- fuels that cannot be replenished after using.

So far the use of the second category of fuels is more than the first category. And this the major concern of the environment activists of today

Non- renewable energy

Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, crude oil, diesel, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) form the non renewable energy sources. They had been formed million of years ago when plants and animals and other vegetative matter got suppressed under tremendous pressure and heat and hence some of them fossilized and some turned to fossil fuels.

Today those are the fuels that run the world. Humans are heavily dependent on these fuels to fulfill all his Knick knacks. And this has endangered the reserves of these fuels. The demand is more than what the earth has. Hence the reserves are depleting fast and a time may come when there will be nothing left for the future generations.

Not only this fossil fuels also leave behind a huge number of waste products after use. For example- coal leaves behind ash when burned for producing electricity, petrol and diesel leave behind harmful gaseous smoke when used in cars and it is released directly into atmosphere. Even nuclear power plants emit very dangerous radioactive wastes that have to be stored in pits deep below the ground otherwise it might mess up the human DNA due to radioactivity.

Only there are two sources which do not emit any harmful waste and they are LPG and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). These two fuels are now widely used in gas cylinders for cooking purposes and in autorickshaw’s. They are by products of crude oil. But there is a limitation. There reserves are very limited. Their availability is even lesser than petrol reserves hence they are not much dependable sources.

If we do not cut down our demands now a time may come when there will be no fuel left at all for us to use. What would we do then? Is this what we are gifting our future generations? An energy-less earth! What is the benefit of so much technological advancement then?

Renewable Energy Sources

Renewable energy sources are those sources which will never finish no matter how much you use it during your lifetime. Such sources consist of wind energy, hydral energy, solar energy. Sun is the greatest source of all energies.

These sources are omnipresent. They can be used to generate power. For example – solar panel use the energy of the sun to produce heat and then this heat sorted can be used to charge up cells which in turn give electrical energy, windmills use the energy of the wind: its velocity to generate electrical power.

Similarly hydro power plants use the kinetic energy of falling water to run turbines to generate power. Not only this certain manufacturer is now making ‘bio-cars’ which run on fuel made biologically by the oil of certain vegetable and plants.

Another replacement of the LPG gas for cooking is the gobar gas. It is a very clever installment. It uses the methane gas produced by domestic human excreta that is locked in chambers. Once formed the gas is channeled to the ovens and this serves as the cooking gas in place of LPG.

“where there is will, there is way”. We can develop newer energy -efficient methods if we want to. These methods don’t produce any harmful chemicals or residue and hence do not affect neither the health nor the environment. No radioactive waste to deal with, no harmful chemicals, to need to worry about renewal, no harm to the environment.

Scientists are developing better  gadgets  everyday which can use these resources because at the present rate of depletion, the extinction of fossil fuels is inevitable. Hence precaution is always better than cure. But before that we can also do something about it individually.

Ways to save fuel

There can be many ways to save fuel starting from the individual level. To enumerate a few are:-

  • Always switch off fans and lights while leaving a room.
  • Do not use air conditioners unless needed. Do not leave any door or window open while ac is on.
  • Take steps to upper floors rather than using escalator or an elevator
  • Use carpool to office or school rather than individual commodity.

Are Electric Vehicles Actually Good for the Climate?

There's a strong consensus that EVs are better for the environment than fossil fuel-driven cars. How do you convince the doubters?

Research shows electric vehicles are better for the climate and the environment than fossil-fuel driven cars.

When it comes to discussions about energy and emerging technology, it's not always easy to find a consensus. But from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and MIT researchers to BloombergNEF and Columbia Law School's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law , one opinion is consistent: Electric vehicles are better for the environment than their fossil-fueled counterparts. 

Why, then, do questions over that conclusion persist? 

For those working in the industry or advocating for clean energy, these recurring questions are nothing new. 

"I think that's just a natural part of that sort of adoption curve," said Ben Prochazka , executive director of nonpartisan, nonprofit organization The Electrification Coalition. 

Are EVs an improvement over cars powered by fossil fuels?

The calculation behind the claim that EVs are better for the environment is a complicated one, and must take into account everything from the vehicles themselves to the fuel they use and the processes required for both. 

But there is a general consensus. 

As a 2019 study led by David Keith, a senior lecturer in system dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management, found: "The rapid decarbonisation of transportation is critical if global efforts to mitigate the worst possible impacts of anthropogenic climate change are to be successful." 

Albert Gore is the executive director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association, an industry-backed coalition of manufacturing companies and others in the transportation and energy world -- from LG and Siemens to Uber and the Tennessee Valley Authority -- working toward the adoption of electric vehicles for both personal and commercial use. 

In his experience, people often forget that the conversation around EVs and vehicles in general isn't just about the emissions they individually create, but the broader environment around how they're built, fueled and more. And often, people don't realize how much cleaner the electric grid is when compared with fossil fuels, especially as an increasing amount of our grid is powered by renewable sources . 

"I think it may be surprising to some folks that the carbon intensity of electricity on average is much, much lower than for gasoline as a transportation fuel," Gore said. "And gasoline is not really getting much cleaner. Electricity is getting cleaner very, very quickly."

What environmental challenges do EVs present?

Just because EVs are, in general, a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels doesn't mean they don't come with their own set of challenges and environmental hazards. And for those opposed to electric vehicles -- for one reason or another -- those challenges take front stage. 

For example, in March, a New York Post article claimed a 2022 study that had "attracted a wave of attention this week after being cited in a Wall Street Journal op-ed " had claimed "electric vehicles release more toxic particles into the atmosphere and are worse for the environment than their gas-powered counterparts." 

In fact, that study by UK-based Emissions Analytics -- who describes their focus as "real-world tailpipe emissions testing" -- was largely centered on the fact that tire particulate wear emissions were 1,000 times worse than exhaust emissions, and that heavier EVs can lead to more tire particulate wear emissions than their lighter gas-powered counterparts. 

But focusing on that one element doesn't paint a full picture, and it doesn't reckon with the production and refining of the fuel itself. And often, that conversation is too nuanced and complicated for quick armchair assessments. 

While the production of EVs -- involving different materials and production processes than traditional vehicles -- requires different things, those resources aren't necessarily worse or more harmful for the environment. And even if the negative outcomes of their production can rival traditional cars, that impact is offset through usage over a small period of time. And as more EVs are built and purchased, those processes are being refined. 

"We're transitioning from a fossil fuel economy to potentially a mineral-based economy, and anything we do ultimately has an impact," Prochazka said. "So it's, 'How do we have the least amount of impact?' It's important, as we do this transition, that we're moving towards transportation education. At this point, it's only a question of 'when' not 'if.' But as we transition, we've got to think through how we make sure we have access to critical minerals in a way that is the highest environmental standards and the highest labor standards and that we're sourcing them from countries that share our democratic values. All those things become important."

How can the EV industry convince its doubters? 

Advocates for EVs know that improving both adoption and trust in the technology won't happen overnight. But that inevitably slow crawl doesn't make the effort to educate and inform any less urgent. 

And for those who hope to see them dominate the roads one day, it's about doubling down on the benefits expected to come from wider adoption of EVs.  

"EVs are the only vehicle on the road that can get cleaner over time," Prochazka said. "You plug into a grid and the grid keeps getting cleaner. We're reducing our oil dependency, we're reducing our oil demand. It's good for economic and national security. But then, as the grid cleans up, we're also reducing the emissions profile of an EV and that's pretty amazing."

But the frequent questions and arguments over EVs' merits do frustrate supporters and those who have studied the issue, especially when they come in the form of misleading or inaccurate information. 

"I think people can see something that feels more disruptive to their daily lives and things that they care about than maybe it is, and it can lend itself to some reactionary misunderstandings," Gore said. "I think that we have really been trying to consistently put credible, third-party, validated, academic, objective and truthful data out to folks who are grappling with these questions. … But it's hard to continue to try to be patient and just say, 'Things will shake out over time' when there is a really concerted and well-funded effort to ensure that doesn't happen."

But Prochazka has faith in a tried and true method: the word of mouth. 

"There's the cul-de-sac effect," he said. "Once your neighbor gets one, you're much more likely to buy one. Once you've ridden in one, and then once you've driven and charged one, all of a sudden those things become demystified."
