The purpose of this paper is to present an integrated literature review exploring the nature of responsive, semantic and interactive Web 3.0 technologies applicable for academic libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted an integrated review of the literature combining a strategy of automated and keywords search. The main source for identifying the studies are Emerald Library Studies and Information & Knowledge Management eJournals, Web of Kn.edge and Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (EBSCO) databases. To this end, a sample of ( n = 140) studies was analyzed to characterize the Web 3.0 trends and its applications based on theme, years and document types.

A review of literature reveals that Web 3.0 needs evaluation as to what extent they are integrated, deployed and mainstreamed into library services and in information management practices. It is important to develop a conceptual framework that explores the linkages of Web 3.0 technologies and their applications in academic libraries.

Originality/value

This review shows how Web 3.0 technologies enhance library services in its holistic conceptualization and how academic libraries are moving into a more robust, inclusive and adaptable phase in their service values and innovation.

Sustainable Development, E-Learning and Web 3.0: A Descriptive Literature Review

The purpose of this paper is to present a descriptive literature review, a classification scheme for studies on sustainable development, e-learning, and Web 3.0 that contribute towards sustainable e-learning. The aims are to discover and highlight some ideas on developing a sustainable learning in higher education in Malaysia.

Teaching, learning and technology are colliding faster and more strongly than ever, as they are facing increasing pressures in respect to innovation and research while concurrently keeping costs at an absolute minimum and reducing the consumption of raw materials. New technology provides enormous possibilities for higher education to use it in an effective and efficient way and e-learning is considered as the new vehicle to exploit these opportunities to improve students’ skills and knowledge, which are not limited to the current study but can be utilized in the workplace in the future. However, the recycling of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) end products via e-learning becomes a major dilemma for users as well as the education sector. Currently, numerous e-learning frameworks aim to enhance students’ professional and personal skills, but are inadequate as a means of raising students’ awareness of sustainability in the context of teaching and learning, minimizing the environmental impact, and assisting Malaysia to become one of the developed countries by 2020. Therefore, this research aims to develop and evaluate a sustainable elearning framework for higher-education institutions in Malaysia. This framework will introduce new, sustainable teaching and learning principles, applications and technologies to improve students’ teaching and learning process, and reducing the environmental impact in Malaysia. Design Science Research Process and mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) will be employed to assess the new sustainable e-learning framework with various stakeholders. The research outcome is a sustainable e-learning framework to support students’ continuous, self-directed learning and provide new and meaningful resources to support e-learning to improve students’ learning interaction and satisfaction in Malaysia.

E-learning offers learning activities which allow users to use various learning tools within virtual learning environments via the Internet. The use of internet has shifted online education as it provides the fundamental structure to deliver the contents and multimedia. This means technology become the key of the modern information society and a booster to reach sustainability. Objective This paper aims to present a survey findings based on Malaysian students’ perspectives towards sustainable development via e-learning. Results: An online survey and a paper-based survey were distributed to four universities in Malaysia which were participated by 233 students are the main data collection method. Findings indicate several elements of e-learning that can support sustainable development, namely: sustainable technology, sustainable mobile learning, sustainable education, sustainable e-learning, consistent infrastructure, sustainable e-learning activities, supportable mobility, effective browsing and connectivity, communication and interaction, efficiency, and participation. Conclusion: The identification of these elements of sustainable e-learning is crucial to allow students to enjoy the benefits of e-learning while contributing towards sustainable development

The key to achieve sustainable development is the awareness of how important is the way to provide, mobilize and optimize the necessary resources and imagine tools that enhance the efficiency of the actions undertaken. In pursuit of sustainable development, various actions can be taken, and a number of them is effectively underway worldwide. The role of education, among others, has long been recognized as decisive in this kind of particular battle. The concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was explicitly acknowledged in Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 and four major actions were identified to begin the work of ESD: improve basic education, reorient existing education to address sustainable development, develop public understanding, awareness, and training. This paper aims to focus on the innovative use of information and communications technologies - synchronous as well as asynchronous activities - to increase access to quality higher education and training opportunities through the various forms of E-learning and Distance Learning Facilities. The aim is to demonstrate how E-learning in higher education can be considered as one of the fundamental principles of Sustainable Development Education as well as an efficient tool in meeting the needs of the present and future.
