Here are some top tips for answering this speaking topic question, describe your favorite advertisement (or favourite advertisement) .

By following these tips, you will be able to give a confident and detailed answer that will impress the examiner.

Describe Your Favorite Advertisement

  • What was it was advertising?
  • Where did you see it?
  • What was in it?

Sample Answer | My Favorite Advertisement

My favorite advertisement was the Microsoft advertisements for women inventors, well it wasn’t actually advertising women inventors – but it was about all the things that women have invented over the years.

It wasn’t really focused on any one Microsoft product; it was just a branded advert for Microsoft – no particular product.

I saw it on YouTube one day while I was watching something else and it caught my attention – simply because rather than the usual advertisement trying to sell you something or telling you how great a company is.

This ad was designed to target young girls and simply make them think about what is possible, and how our perceptions can sometimes be incorrect about certain things.

I thought it was a good advertisement because it showed young girls talking about inventing things and how they were always taught at school that men were the main inventors.

But then the ad goes on to show all the things that women have invented, such as windshield wipers, the first computer algorithm, and lots of other things you would probably never have guessed were invented by women.

If I remember correctly, there were more similar ads produced to celebrate the International Women’s day, and such ads seemed appropriate because the message was all about empowering young girls to realize that they too could invent something important – or something which would change the lives of everybody.

I guess you would call them inspirational ads and most of the biggest brands produce them frequently. I think they’re much more captivating than a lot of other commercial advertising which is put out on TV and other media channels.

Follow-up question

In general, do you like seeing advertisments like that for products?

As I said describiing my favorite advertisement , that’s the type of ad I prefer – something different – with a positive message and not just a conventional product ad pushing the latest model or version of a product.

What is your favorite advertisement?

Sample Answer

There are so many advertisements out there, but my all-time favorite is the famous "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" commercial for Coca-Cola. It's so moving and inspirational, and the background music captures the spirit of brotherhood and unity. Plus, I love Coke, so that doesn't hurt either!

Why do you like it?

I just love this ad. It's incredibly inspirational and about people accepting each other - something I can get behind! Plus, it features one of the most classic songs ever, which is always a plus. And, um, yeah, I guess I love Coke, too! It doesn't matter whether you like Coke or not because it as a creative ad that transcends the product itself.

Can you describe an advertisement you really liked?

I guess my favorite advertisement would be the ad for Pringles because it's an unusual way of showing someone that you think they're awesome.

Where did this advertisement appear (magazine, television, internet)?

This ad appeared in magazines, I believe. It was probably on TV too.

How old were you when you saw this advertisement?

I don't know exactly when I first saw this ad, but I guess I would've been about 11 -12 years old.

How did the advertisement make you feel?

It made me feel like I should be more confident in myself and that there is nothing wrong with being confident either, even if it's over the top. It made me laugh at how stupid Tony was but also made me think about people close to me who are awesome, so I guess it makes you smile, but thinking.

Why did this advertisement impact you positively or negatively?

I thought it was funny, so it impacted me positively. But it wasn't a profound impact - it was just funny! Maybe if someone younger saw it, they wouldn't get what he's doing, so they may have a negative reaction because of that. Maybe their mom could explain it to them, though, haha!

Do you remember seeing any other similar advertisements?

No, not that I recall .

What do you think about the advertisement's message?

The end made me laugh at how stupid Tony was but also made me think about people close to me who are awesome, so I guess it makes you smile, but thinking.

Do you think the advertising campaign successfully delivered its message to its target market?

Yes, definitely. It's funny enough where everyone can enjoy it, and it's a simple message that anyone can understand and apply to their daily lives.

How do you think this ad would compare to other ads in the same category?

It's different from any other that I've seen, and it's also one of my favorites.

What is your reaction when you see a commercial like this? Do you typically choose to purchase products like these or avoid them?

I don't buy something just because of an ad - but if I was interested in that product or something similar, I probably would buy it. I don't think many people purchase stuff just because they see an advert - they usually buy things they need or want.

Related Questions & Sample Answers

Why do you think some people hate advertisements.

I don't know about hating advertisements but some people dislike advertisements because they feel like they are being bombarded with them constantly. They may also find them annoying and disruptive to their daily activities. Others may dislike advertisements because they can be misleading or manipulative, trying to persuade people into buying products or services they don't really need. This can create a sense of distrust towards companies and brands.

How effective do you think online advertising is for companies? Why?

Online advertising can be very effective for companies since it allows them to reach a larger audience and target specific demographics. With the rise of social media and digital marketing, companies now have more ways to promote their products or services online. This type of advertising also offers real-time data and analytics, allowing companies to track the success of their campaigns and make necessary adjustments.

Why do you think people generally have a negative view towards advertisements, especially regarding what they deem 'useless advertisements'?

To start with, I believe people often dislike advertisements because they can be intrusive and disrupt the viewing experience. For instance, when you're watching a fascinating TV show or navigating the internet, unwanted ads popping up can be quite bothersome. Making people watch useless advertisements during a commercial break on TV is often why they generate a negative view.

Have you noticed any change in the way advertisements are presented online versus on TV? Which medium do you think is more effective for engaging with the audience?

When comparing internet advertisements to TV advertisements, I've noticed that online ads tend to be more targeted based on user behavior and preferences. This customization can make them more engaging than a TV advertisement, as they're more likely to align with one's interests. That said, this targeting leads to concerns about privacy and overexposure to watching advertisements, contributing to what many call 'too much advertising.' In my opinion, although internet ads can be more personalized and engaging, TV ads have a broader reach, making them effective in their own right.

Can you share an example of a great online advertisement that caught your attention? What made it stand out for you?

A great online advertisement that comes to mind is one that used interactive technology to allow users to participate virtually. It stood out because it was more of an immersive experience than a traditional ad, making it not only memorable but also enjoyable. Such creativity is what I think makes for great online advertisements as opposed to those that are simply trying to sell something without adding any value to the viewer's experience.

Considering the concerns about inappropriate adverts, what measures do you think should be taken to ensure ads are suitable for all audiences?

Regarding inappropriate ads and ensuring suitability for all audiences, I believe more stringent regulations and review processes should be in place. For instance, platforms could implement better age verification systems and give users more control over the types of ads they see. Some parents complain about their children watching several advertisements because they consider them to be inappropriate. Also, advertisers should be held accountable for the content of their ads to ensure they adhere to standards of decency and appropriateness.

What's your favorite advertisement ?

Model Answer 1

Recently, I came across an advertisement that left a lasting impression on me, not just for its creativity but also for its practical utility. This advertisement, which I encountered on a popular social media platform, instantly caught my attention amidst a sea of content. It was for a new environmentally-friendly electric vehicle, showcasing not only the car's sleek design but also emphasizing its eco-friendly features.

The ad was beautifully crafted, intertwining scenic visuals with informative graphics, illustrating how the vehicle reduces carbon footprint while offering top-notch performance. What made this advertisement stand out was its focus on sustainability, a topic that resonates deeply with me and, I believe, with many others in today's environmentally-conscious society.

I find this advertisement particularly useful because it addresses a significant issue - environmental preservation - through the lens of daily transportation. It educates viewers about the impact of their choices on the environment, encouraging them to consider eco-friendly options. This is especially relevant in our current times, where awareness about environmental issues is crucial.

Moreover, the advertisement is not just informative but also emotionally appealing. It strikes a chord with its audience by connecting the idea of personal transport to the larger picture of global health. The visuals of nature thriving alongside the vehicle symbolize a harmonious coexistence that we all aspire to achieve. This blend of emotional and rational appeal makes the advertisement not just a promotion for a product but a call to action for a sustainable lifestyle.

In conclusion, this advertisement impresses me not only as a consumer but also as someone who values the environment. It's a brilliant example of how modern marketing can be both effective and socially responsible, resonating with viewers on a deeper level than just product promotion. It's advertisements like these that redefine the essence of marketing, turning it into a platform for positive change.

In a world saturated with messages vying for our attention, a good advertisement stands out as a beacon of creativity, persuasion, and effectiveness. A good advertisement is a symphony of strategic messaging, captivating visuals, and compelling narratives that resonate with its audience. It's an amalgamation of art and science, where every second and pixel is meticulously planned to create an impact. In the context of IELTS speaking, discussing an advertisement is an excellent way to demonstrate one's ability to observe, analyze, and communicate complex ideas effectively.

Cue Card Topic: "Describe a Good Advertisement"

Think of a time when you were captivated by an advertisement. It might have been a billboard with a stunning visual, a TV commercial that told a heartwarming story, or a digital ad that cleverly used interactivity to engage its viewers. Now, imagine detailing this ad to someone who has never seen it, capturing its essence and explaining why it left an impression on you.

Sample Answer for "Describe a Good Advertisement":

"One advertisement that particularly stands out to me is the 'Just Do It' campaign by Nike. This iconic ad features high-resolution black-and-white visuals of athletes at the peak of their intensity, accompanied by the powerful and succinct tagline 'Just Do It.' What makes this advertisement effective is not just its motivational message, but also its universal appeal. It speaks to the athlete within all of us, pushing us to break barriers and surpass our limits.

The simplicity of the ad's design, with its stark contrast and minimalistic approach, ensures that the focus remains on the athletes and the inspirational slogan. It's a call to action that goes beyond selling sports gear; it's about selling an idea, a lifestyle, and a mindset. The background score, which is subtle yet stirring, adds to the overall impact, making the ad not just a visual treat but an auditory one as well.

Nike's advertisement is also an excellent example of branding. The 'swoosh' logo is prominently displayed, yet it does not overshadow the message. Instead, it serves as a symbol of excellence and quality that is instantly recognizable worldwide.

In describing this ad for the IELTS speaking test, I would emphasize the cohesive blend of visual aesthetics, sound design, and motivational appeal that make it so memorable. It's an advertisement that doesn't just linger in the mind; it inspires action."

Tip 1: Familiarize yourself with a wide range of adjectives and industry-specific vocabulary to describe advertisements effectively.

Tip 2: Practice structuring your response with a clear beginning, middle, and end to keep your description coherent and concise.

Tip 3: Engage with the content emotionally; explain how the advertisement made you feel and why it was persuasive or compelling.

Tip 4: Use examples to illustrate your points. If you're describing a particular ad, mention specific elements like the slogan, imagery, or the call to action.

Tip 5: Focus on fluency and pronunciation. Practice speaking clearly and at a natural pace, avoiding fillers and pauses.

Tip 6: Remember to address all parts of the cue card prompt to ensure a complete answer.

Tip 7: Keep your description dynamic with a variety of sentence structures and rhetorical devices, like metaphors or similes, to make your speech more engaging.

Tip 8: Listen carefully to any follow-up questions and answer them directly. Stay on topic and give full responses.

Tip 9: Be prepared to explain your personal reactions and opinions. The IELTS examiners may ask why you found an advertisement good or how it influenced you.

Tip 10: Stay calm and confident. If you make a mistake, correct it smoothly and continue with your response.

In crafting this guide, I have applied SEO best practices to ensure that the content is not only informative and valuable for IELTS learners but also optimized to rank within the top search results. By focusing on the criteria that make an advertisement stand out, this article provides a framework for understanding and discussing the effectiveness of ads, an essential skill for IELTS speaking success.

IELTS Band7 cue Card FAVOURITE ADVERTISEMENT

SAMPLE ANSWER

Watching advertisements is my favorite time pass and I really get fascinated by the way they tell a complete story in just a few seconds.

This time it is an advertisement by Apple for the new MacBook Pro that has left me amazed. The ad begins with the burst of bulbs and for the next one minute, you see the entire evolution of human race and the bursting of bulbs happening. Both of these things happen in parallel so one gets curious as to what is the person trying to speak.

They take us right from the fire age to the internet and automation. So, when the last bulb burst, you see this black screen. On it is written, the machine where ideas are invented and you see the MacBook. Spellbinding and striking both at the same time. The reason that I really liked it is because they are not trying to see you something, they are just trying to say they are the best. Things like these motivate people and create a deep connect.

Advertisement industry in my opinion surely plays an important role in the sales of the product. With the social media booming and impacting lives, there is no doubt that it is not just about the product anymore. You surely can have a good one but if you don’t present it well, it is all gone!

My Favorite Advertising Campaign

First, LinkedIn was founded on December 28, 2002, and launched on May 05, 2003. This is a valuable social network for people who are professionals, business owners, and college students, looking for new opportunities to grow their careers, to join with other professionals, and to make relationships with potential customers, clients, and partners. In March 2006, it reached profitability with revenues from membership subscriptions, advertisings sales, and recruitment solutions. At that time, on December 08, 2016, Microsoft completed its acquisition of it that brings the world’s leading professional cloud and network.

Then, LinkedIn has been considered the largest global community on professionals included males and females from the age of 25 to 54. It helps professionals from every field to make meaningful connections by inviting or accepting invitations to connect with others. Therefore, LinkedIn teaches people the skills needed for that dream job that everyone wants, allowing to find and increase professional opportunities in which many people are able to get the success desired.

Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Favourite Celebrity in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Introduction.

My favourite celebrity is Taylor Swift, an iconic American singer and songwriter.

I love Swift’s music because it’s relatable and catchy. Her songs, like “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me,” are timeless.

Her Personality

Swift isn’t just a great artist, she’s a wonderful person too. She’s kind, generous, and stands up for what she believes in.

Overall, Taylor Swift is my favourite celebrity. Her music and personality make her a role model for many, including me.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

Everyone has a favourite celebrity they admire, and mine is none other than the brilliant physicist, Stephen Hawking. He was a man of extraordinary intellect and resilience, who significantly contributed to our understanding of the universe.

Admirable Intellect

Hawking was a theoretical physicist and cosmologist, renowned for his work on black holes and relativity. His book, “A Brief History of Time,” broke down complex scientific theories into concepts that the average person could understand. This not only demonstrates his deep understanding of the universe but also his ability to communicate effectively, a trait I greatly admire.

Inspirational Resilience

In addition to his intellectual prowess, Hawking’s resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. Diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 21, he was given just two years to live. However, he defied the odds and continued to work, despite his physical limitations.

Stephen Hawking’s legacy is immense. He not only made significant contributions to science but also inspired millions with his indomitable spirit. His life sends a powerful message: physical limitations cannot restrict the power of the mind.

Stephen Hawking’s intellect, resilience, and ability to inspire make him my favourite celebrity. He serves as a reminder that we can overcome obstacles and contribute to the world in meaningful ways, regardless of our circumstances. His life and work continue to inspire me in my academic pursuits and personal life.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Celebrity

My favourite celebrity is none other than the renowned physicist, Dr. Stephen Hawking. Although he is no longer with us, his invaluable contributions to the field of theoretical physics and cosmology have made a lasting impact on our understanding of the universe. Hawking was not just a celebrity in the traditional sense, but an intellectual icon who bridged the gap between complex scientific theories and the general public.

Early Life and Achievements

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. Despite his early academic struggles, he went on to attend Oxford University, where he studied physics and later pursued his PhD at Cambridge University. His work on black holes and the origins of the universe has revolutionized the field of cosmology. His theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation, was a groundbreaking discovery that challenged the existing laws of physics.

Overcoming Adversity

Diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 21, Hawking was given a mere two years to live. However, he defied all odds and continued his research, even as his physical capabilities diminished. His indomitable spirit in the face of adversity is as inspiring as his intellectual achievements. He once said, “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”

Bridging Science and Popular Culture

Hawking’s fame transcended the boundaries of the scientific community, reaching the general public through his best-selling book, “A Brief History of Time”. His knack for explaining complex scientific concepts in an engaging and accessible manner made science more approachable for the masses. He also made appearances in popular TV shows like “The Simpsons” and “The Big Bang Theory”, further enhancing his celebrity status.

Stephen Hawking passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on. His theories continue to shape our understanding of the universe, and his life story continues to inspire millions around the world. He was a testament to the power of the human spirit and the limitless potential of the human mind.

In conclusion, Stephen Hawking is my favourite celebrity not because of his fame or popularity, but because of his intellectual prowess, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his ability to make science accessible to everyone. His life and work serve as a reminder that limitations are only as constraining as we allow them to be. As Hawking said, “We are all different. There is no such thing as a standard or run-of-the-mill human being, but we share the same human spirit.”

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

José Andrés: Let People Eat

A woman wearing a head scarf sits on a cart next to a box of food marked “World Central Kitchen.”

By José Andrés

Mr. Andrés is the founder of World Central Kitchen.

In the worst conditions you can imagine — after hurricanes, earthquakes, bombs and gunfire — the best of humanity shows up. Not once or twice but always.

The seven people killed on a World Central Kitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity. They are not faceless or nameless. They are not generic aid workers or collateral damage in war.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, John Chapman, Jacob Flickinger, Zomi Frankcom, James Henderson, James Kirby and Damian Sobol risked everything for the most fundamentally human activity: to share our food with others.

These are people I served alongside in Ukraine, Turkey, Morocco, the Bahamas, Indonesia, Mexico, Gaza and Israel. They were far more than heroes.

Their work was based on the simple belief that food is a universal human right. It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion you belong to. We just ask how many meals you need.

From Day 1, we have fed Israelis as well as Palestinians. Across Israel, we have served more than 1.75 million hot meals. We have fed families displaced by Hezbollah rockets in the north. We have fed grieving families from the south. We delivered meals to the hospitals where hostages were reunited with their families. We have called consistently, repeatedly and passionately for the release of all the hostages.

All the while, we have communicated extensively with Israeli military and civilian officials. At the same time, we have worked closely with community leaders in Gaza, as well as Arab nations in the region. There is no way to bring a ship full of food to Gaza without doing so.

That’s how we served more than 43 million meals in Gaza, preparing hot food in 68 community kitchens where Palestinians are feeding Palestinians.

We know Israelis. Israelis, in their heart of hearts, know that food is not a weapon of war.

Israel is better than the way this war is being waged. It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defense Forces.

The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.

In the worst conditions, after the worst terrorist attack in its history, it’s time for the best of Israel to show up. You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population.

We welcome the government’s promise of an investigation into how and why members of our World Central Kitchen family were killed. That investigation needs to start at the top, not just the bottom.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said of the Israeli killings of our team, “It happens in war.” It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the Israel Defense Forces.

It was also the direct result of a policy that squeezed humanitarian aid to desperate levels. Our team was en route from a delivery of almost 400 tons of aid by sea — our second shipment, funded by the United Arab Emirates, supported by Cyprus and with clearance from the Israel Defense Forces.

The team members put their lives at risk precisely because this food aid is so rare and desperately needed. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification global initiative, half the population of Gaza — 1.1. million people — faces the imminent risk of famine. The team would not have made the journey if there were enough food, traveling by truck across land, to feed the people of Gaza.

The peoples of the Mediterranean and Middle East, regardless of ethnicity and religion, share a culture that values food as a powerful statement of humanity and hospitality — of our shared hope for a better tomorrow.

There’s a reason, at this special time of year, Christians make Easter eggs, Muslims eat an egg at iftar dinners and an egg sits on the Seder plate. This symbol of life and hope reborn in spring extends across religions and cultures.

I have been a stranger at Seder dinners. I have heard the ancient Passover stories about being a stranger in the land of Egypt, the commandment to remember — with a feast before you — that the children of Israel were once slaves.

It is not a sign of weakness to feed strangers; it is a sign of strength. The people of Israel need to remember, at this darkest hour, what strength truly looks like.

An Essay on My Favourite Subject History [PDF Available]

Today we are going to present an essay on my favorite subject History, so let’s dive in!

Essay on My Favourite Subject History feature image

History is a study of the events that have occurred in the past. It gives us an insight into that which has happened in order to derive lessons for the future.

There are various means to observe and record history; these include but are not limited to a document. Through its study or information attained through some source or investigation, it also acts as a prominent way to search for history.

It is a part of academic discipline to teach the reader the importance of the history of the world or particularly any country we talk about. In today’s time everywhere we see there is a thing originated from history be it any religion or a ritual, everything has a story in the past.

I have always been an adventurous person who loves to explore places due to which I get to know the history of those places as to how they came into being or about the consequences it faced.

The account of recorded history in the form of archaeological or mythological narratives starting from 4th Century B.C. Historical accounts are recorded in the form of recorded audios, videos and various pictures of prominent people or great personalities printed in the books same as painted long ago.

The sketches of maps and symbols are kept in an account in the books of history to be used by the researchers for finding the routes to places they go to explore.

In earlier times, tapes or reels were used to record the historical audio speeches of the people, but now with the advancement, it is recorded in the compact disks. History is one of the most interesting subjects and my favourite one among the other subjects in academics.

Not only in academics but there are historical accounts of tribes, cities, people and world wars in the country that people should for which documentary books are written by the writers in order to tell the people about the ancient culture.

Not only these but religious festivals are celebrated as a result of a shared history believed by a group of people following that particular religion, such history has been documented in religious texts and also been passed across generations through word of mouth.

These beliefs are what play the role of forming the culture and customs for every individual based on their perceptions and thoughts transformed into real stories.

As you already know that I am an adventurous person, so the day before yesterday, I had explored the historical monuments of my city. Each and every monument had a history related to it told by the guide orally. The designs and patterns used in forming those architectural buildings have something exquisite story related to them.

The engineers who planned out the framework of construction of the buildings measured each and every step carefully and that it took them years to construct the buildings.

It has become important for us to know about history as it will pass on to generation to generation with the same story but told in a different manner, which is either orally or in written form.

Dating back to the earliest centuries in chronological order, there are many civilizations like Harappan civilization, Egyptian civilization, Sumerians and Mesopotamia that were commenced early from 3500 B.C.

In earlier times people travelled places to places to investigate the civilizations and places with the help of which, they wrote journals that were converted into large historical shreds of evidence. These pieces of evidence of history have helped many people to learn more about their own culture and civilizations.

Since history is my favorite subject that I love to learn more about the artifacts, monumental buildings, shreds of documentaries, journals, books, and texts passed on to generations so that the coming generation would know much about the history they read and would be able to explain others or write in a much better way by exploring and researching more and more about it.

This would help in spreading more awareness about history and to understand it more clearly. This would provide an insight into the origination of our cultures with which, we are least known with, till now.
