Somehow my writing may be short on one point or another that’s why I usually encourage my readers to do their findings asides from what they have read on the blog.

Doing your personal findings is important. Who knows? You might even be able to share points I have missed in this article in the comment and we can all learn. 2. Get your Capital Needed

There is no specific capital needed to start a foodstuff business or grain business in Nigeria. But with that been said it does not mean you can start with any amount you have. So on average, to start a foodstuff business in Nigeria you will need a capital of N400,000 (N400K) – N1,000,000 (N1M).

We can also say the specific capital also depends on so many factors like if the area you want the business to be is a rural area (a village type of setting) or an urban area (a city kind of setting), how big you want to start and so on. 3. Rent a Shop to Sell Foodstuff

Foodstuff shop for your foodstuff business is very important because you cannot afford to expose your foodstuffs to things that will make them spoil on time. When you rent a shop for your foodstuff business, you are able to protect your foodstuff from rain which can cause massive spoilage, from the sun which is not also good, and lastly from rodents.

I will talk more about how you can prevent rodents even in your shop later in the article because this could also happen to your foodstuffs even if they are in your shop. If you want to go into foodstuff business wholesale I will advise you to rent a warehouse instead of a shop. The massive space will allow your foodstuff to breathe and will always give you the opportunity to buy more foodstuffs without fear.

4. Considerations Before Renting Shop

There are many things to consider when renting a shop for your foodstuff business in Nigeria.

A. Consider Location

You need to consider location and this is because it has a lot to do with how customers can easily locate you. When it comes to choosing a location you need to consider where thousands of likely customers will pass every day. It is at this kind of location or area you should rent a shop.

B. Money for Shop Rent

After deciding your location, you also need to consider how much you will pay for rent at least for the first few months. This money is often taken from your capital and to make it logical it must not pass more than 20% – 30% of your capital. For example , if the capital you have set aside for your foodstuff business is N1M this means the money for the yearly rent for your foodstuff shop must not exceed N300K.

C. Consider Shop Space

You need to consider the space also. Is the shop spacious enough? Can it contain your foodstuff now and will it be able to contain more foodstuff in the nearby future when the business starts growing? These are the 3 main factors you need to consider when renting a shop in Nigeria for this business.

5. Buy your Foodstuff in Bulk

It’s impossible to go into the sales of all types of foodstuff unless you are sure that you can really handle every part of it. Even Aliko Dangote did not go into the sales of all foodstuffs he specialized in some. However, here is the list of foodstuffs you can buy and sell in your foodstuff business in Nigeria.

Some of these foodstuffs are grain foodstuff while some are tuber foodstuff and lastly pepper. When you are ready to buy them you need to make sure you are buying it from the right source – a trusted customer who has built his or her reputation over the years and has gathered experience.

This customer must be a wholesaler of foodstuff so that the foodstuffs you will be buying from him or her will be at their lowest prices. This is to make sure you have a bigger profit margin when you finally start selling too.

6. Stock Foodstuff in your Shop

When it comes to stocking your shop with foodstuffs one needs to be extremely careful because how you place these foodstuffs will determine how long they will last in your shop before they start spoiling. If foodstuffs are well placed in your shop or store they should remain in good condition till you sell them.

This is why when you are about stocking your shop you are to make sure the floors of the shop or store are dry enough and you should not place the foodstuff on bare ground but on planks. The best planks I have seen shops around me place their foodstuff on pallets – the wooden pallets that come with goods from the seaports.

These wooden pallets are bought from ports and laid on the floor before placing the foodstuffs. Also, make sure the foodstuffs are not resting on the wall so that when rain falls water will not spoil the foodstuffs. After proper placement of the foodstuffs in your shop the next thing you should do is to do an inventory of all the foodstuffs.

This is to make sure all the foodstuffs bought are complete and none was missing during transport.

7. Start Selling Foodstuff

At this point, you can inform your friends and family about your new business so that they can start patronizing you from day one. Also because of where you are located, you will be able to start selling your foodstuffs immediately after you open. To draw people – potential customers closer to you, you can reduce the price of your foodstuffs a bit.

For example, if a paint of garri is sold for N500 in that area you can sell your own paint of garri for N480. This will attract the traffic of customers to your shop. Also, develop a good relationship with your customers. This was one of Aliko Dangote’s strengths.

He was able to keep customers for years and because of the way he treated them these customers also brought their friends to buy from him.

1. Sell off your foodstuff quickly . There is no need selling on higher prices when you have many competitors around. Let your price be fair and moderate you will attract many customers who will buy off your commodities.

No need hoarding goods, sometimes you will he here hoarding it whereas hustlers have sharply transport the commodity down by the time such commodities arrive they are fresh and everybody will want to go for them.

2. Understand season . Foodstuffs are seasonal, you should know the seasons for every commodity so that you can plan well. Probably this is when you need a business plan on foodstuff business. People buy down during crop season ahead of off season when they can make good profits. Business requires smartness so be smart about your foodstuff business.

3. Capital : no matter how things turn out don’t touch your capital. Make your personal expenses inside your profit, some smart persons pay themselves salary from their profits. It will help you to save, pay bills and reinvest.

4. Know where to buy what : in Akwa Ibom State traders go to Northern Cross River to buy yams, Garri, oranges, coco yam and foofoo. You can go there to buy or purchase from distributors.

5. Know your customers: find out what your customers like and satisfy them. For instance, in Delta State they people prefer Pepe yam anything other than that will be a struggle. In Akwa Ibom it is hand peeled melon, there is no chance for machine peeled melon. So understand your customer preference and stick to it.

6. Price fluctuations : some factors contributes to the rise and fall of commodity prices apart from the season. Examples of such factors incliudes, cost of transportation, shortage of commodity or scarcity. If you  understand the trend you can always make your customers happy.

7.Purchase and sell more of the commodity that has higher demand and less of what is on low demand. For instance, if your location Garri attracts much sales please buy more of Garri. Don’t go and buy a bag of rice and buy Garri half bag when you know you can finish a bag of Garri in a day while rice may take like 3 days before exhausting it. So put your money where it is needed most.

8. Be neat : many customers prefer someone who is neat. Now that we have graduates in food business who are bringing class to the business, it is good you rise to the trend.

9. Package your food well. See the kind of nylon used in packaging stock fish parts, very attractive, sometimes I purchase it even when it was not on my list. You can package some foodstuffs that are always left open people who are in a hurry or like it that way will buy before you know it others will copy.

10. Be customer friendly : the importance of this cannot be overemphasized. Many have loosed potential customers because of their attitudes. And many have sustained their customers because of their friendliness.

Hello Eno. This is quite informative but there is one area that you did not touch. Assuming that someone wants to go into this business big time, how can the person keep rodents and pests out of the stored goods? Are there special products to preserve it from pests and rodents? I remember one time I bought one bag of beans that pests eat up even though I put enough pepper inside the gallon that I used to store it.

Michael Pollan's deliciously simple meal plan to avoid ultra-processed foods — and where it falls short

Michael Pollan is probably best known for the seven simple words of diet advice he first used to open a New York Times essay in 2007, which later became the backbone of a bestselling book :

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants ."

He knows it's really not so simple.

"We all make compromises," Pollan told Business Insider ahead of the release of his latest documentary, Food, Inc. 2 , out April 12. "We do the best we can, and people pick out the issues they want to deal with, and can deal with."

At home, Pollan tries his best to avoid eating industrial meat, eggs, or any other product from big factory farms.

He and his wife have set up their life to make healthy eating easy and affordable. They keep a stash of well-sharpened knives, ready to chop and cook a rainbow of veggies for dinner most nights. Lately, his table's featured stir-frys and pasta dishes, as well as some wild salmon, since they happen to be running in Alaska this season. Pollan also enjoys cooking a firmer, more protein-rich form of tofu I'd never heard of called yuba, which is essentially a soymilk skin. Hearty stews , perhaps with Indian or Moroccan-inspired spices, are some of the other fan favorites simmering around his kitchen island in Berkeley, California.

It sounds very healthy, very delicious, very aspirational … and pretty impossible. Because it is.

The reality is that Pollan does participate in America's industrialized food system. He's spent the better part of two decades investigating the way food corporations combine chemicals, plants, and animals in some very toxic ways, and as a result he feels "really uncomfortable participating in a system that was so brutal, not just to the animals, but to the workers in it," he told BI. But he knows that, ultimately, if you want to participate in US society, some amount of toxic and unethical food is unavoidable.

"If you had me over to your house and you were cooking a pork shoulder, I wouldn't be rude I would eat it," he said. "I'm not so zealous about it."

Still, he might have some intrusive thoughts while eating store-bought sliced white bread or fruit salad. He worries about the glyphosate that's doused on industrial wheat right before harvest and the harsh pesticides often sprayed on thin-skinned fruits like strawberries (he opts for organic whenever he can, but even that's not a guarantee of safety). "I think that the more you know about food, the more it shapes your diet," he said.

'Plant-based' is just a marketing trick from Big Food

Pollan's new documentary (in select theaters now, and streaming on Amazon Prime) is a follow-up to his Academy Award-nominated 2008 release "Food, Inc." "Food, Inc. 2" focuses on the few mega-companies that dominate our grocery stores and often end up deciding what we put in our mouths.

The film explores what happened at a Tyson meat processing plant in Waterloo, Iowa, during the first days of the COVID-19 outbreak (spoiler alert: it wasn't great.) It also features the voices of tomato pickers in Florida fighting for fair pay, Taco Bell employees asking for the same, one inventive farmer bringing a regenerative gizmo called the "clustercluck " to his cornfields, and Democratic Senator Jon Tester, who (when he's not in Washington) works an organic farm in Montana.

Over 90 minutes, the documentary takes you on a rather bleak journey through time, highlighting the many ways our food system has actually gotten worse since the release of the first Food Inc. 16 years ago.

And yet, it ends on a head-spinningly optimistic note. The shift is so stark it's almost funny. Just before the credits roll, the film encourages viewers to join the "movement" on its website, which encourages us to (surprise, surprise) eat fewer ultra-processed foods, support our local farmers by shopping at their markets when we can, reduce meat and dairy consumption, and then in our spare time, lobby for more antitrust law enforcement against the handful of big food companies that dominate the market for baby formula , meat, cereal, and other staples. Simple.

"The industry has a strong interest in complicating our relationship to food, creating problems that it can then solve — but it's a lot simpler than people think," Pollan says.

Is it though? Speaking to Pollan made me feel even more strongly than before that, even in a best-case scenario , for the thin slice of Americans who have the time, money, plus institutional and cultural support to adopt all of these grand ideas, some of the worst parts about our big, bad food system cannot be avoided. The emulsifiers that may mess with our gut bacteria in weird and poorly understood ways are sorely needed to keep food shelf-stable. And even if we stick to organics, the soil quality ain't what it used to be around here, meaning we derive less nutrients from the foods we eat.

"If you do eat food, not too much, mostly plants, you're going to be fine," Pollan tells me, doubling down on his old phrase.

But even he admits some caveats with his next breath. He's frustrated by the misleading "aura of health" that has sprung up around everything plant-based. That's a whole new game of whack-a-mole we have to play in the grocery store aisles. After all, sugar cane is a plant, and so is the corn that so many of our stabilizers, artificial sweeteners, flavors, and added ingredients come from. Plant-based diets aren't necessarily a beacon of health.

"I don't regard a lot of the stuff in the supermarket as food," he tells me.

But it's what we have.

Master franchise company, RJ Corp, that runs PepsiCo’s second-largest bottling plant outside the US, Varun Beverages, and Devyani International that runs KFC, Pizza Hut and Costa Coffee outlets in India, is looking into the next generation to take on the mantle. Ravi Jaipuria, Chairman of the $3 billion-RJ Corp, formalising the succession plan, has given the food and beverages business to his son, Varun, while the daughter, Devyani, has been given charge of the healthcare and education side.

According to a report in the Economic Times, Ravi Jaipuria told the financial daily that the succession planning of the conglomerate has been established, including a roadmap for Varun and Devyani to take on strategic leadership roles. He added that the daily operations would be run by the professionals as usual.

He will remain the chairman of RJ Corp, as well as oversee growth, policies, expansion and diversification. The 70-year-old billionaire said that the framework was envisaged with stability and continuity, as well as the addition of fresh perspectives into new leadership. The succession plan allows his children, Varun and Devyani, to focus on the broader strategic initiatives and long-term vision.

Jaipuria said that the professional team will continue to be central to the strategy, and that the blend of professional management and strategic leadership is key to driving RJ Corp forward.

WHAT VARUN AND DEVYANI JAIPURIA WILL GET

Varun Jaipuria, 36, has been given charge of Varun Beverages and Devyani International. Varun Beverages and Devyani International, named after the siblings, are listed.

Devyani Jaipuria, 39, has got the healthcare businesses, including hospital chain Cocoon, Delhi Public Schools in Gurugram and Jaipur, along with DPS International School in Gurgaon and Dharav High School in Jaipur.

Varun Beverages bottles and distributes PepsiCo beverages like Pepsi, Mirinda, 7UP, Mountain Dew fizzy drinks, Sting energy drink, Tropicana juice, Slice juice, and Aquafina water. It has 45 manufacturing facilities and operates in nine countries, including South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Devyani International runs KFC, Pizza Hut and has exclusive franchise of Costa Coffee, homegrown chain Vaango, and Food Street brand that runs food courts in malls, airports, highways and hospitals. It has its presence in Nepal, Nigeria and Thailand.

RJ Corp’s healthcare vertical includes Cryovia Biotech that provides umbilical cord blood stem collection, processing and storage. It operates in Thailand, Singapore, West Asia, Nepal, Vietnam and east Africa.

DPS, DPS International, Pravaah, Modern Montessori International London are part of its education vertical.

Business | Historic Markley Hotel will be redeveloped as small-business, retail hub with student housing next door

People in Baltimore’s Lauraville and Beverly Hills neighborhoods have long known the sprawling brick building in the 4500 block of Harford Road as The Markley Hotel, though it’s not clear whether it ever hosted overnight guests.

A new chapter is starting for the former D. Markley Supply Co. seed and general store and warehouse as a community hub, with student housing for Morgan State University next door.

The historic Markley building, which sits on a 3-acre, former industrial tract that Baltimore-based MCB Real Estate purchased in 2022, would become a hub where food and retail entrepreneurs run stalls and kiosks. The $7 million project also involves transforming a second-floor loft into a gathering and event space for entrepreneurs and young professionals, along with offices. Construction is expected to start this summer.

Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street, which works to revitalize the Harford Road commercial corridor, began planning the 24,000-square-foot center after MCB donated the Markley building to the nonprofit group.

On the site’s remaining land, MCB is building a 151-unit Class A apartment building to house students from Morgan State’s campus less than a mile away. The apartments are expected to open by summer 2025.

Revitalization of the 4500 block, which has long struggled with vacant and deteriorating buildings, was seen as a critical link to Harford Road’s redevelopment, including new stores and restaurants, that has occurred both north and south of the site, said Daniel Doty, executive director of the Main Street group.

“There was just this huge property that was very difficult to do anything with,” Doty said. The redevelopment “is helping to bring life to the entire area.”

The Main Street group is redeveloping the Markley with the help of MCB and The Cube Cowork, an existing Harford Road-based business that calls itself the nation’s largest Black woman-run coworking space. The Cube will expand to the Markley and become the anchor tenant, leading the effort to attract and retain entrepreneurs. It will continue to run its current Harford Road location, where entrepreneurs lease its offices, co-working space, conference rooms and event space.

“Because the demand has been so high, in the sense of other services that entrepreneurs need, when we saw this space we thought that this would be a great expansion,” said Tammira Lucas, The Cube’s leader and small-business adviser. “This gives them a home. Something that they lack is a place where they can actually be stable but also not have the extreme overhead of a brick and mortar space.”

MCB, the development firm that purchased and is redeveloping Harborplace, decided to donate the Markley and work to repurpose it as part of its mission to foster overall neighborhood growth through its projects, said Amy Bonitz, MCB’s vice president of community development.

The idea for the new facility is to offer space for companies to grow and later potentially open their own stores or restaurants on Harford Road, Doty said. The vision includes offering affordable space for small retailers, food-based businesses, including a pop-up cafe, small media companies and other entrepreneurs.

“We aim to build something truly impactful here,” he said.

The group also is relying on help from the business and entrepreneurial programs at Morgan State’s Graves School of Business and Management.

The project was awarded a $2.5 million state historic tax credit as well as a $1 million grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Plans call for restoring the building’s signature two-story wraparound porch.

The property was initially used as a general store around the turn of the last century, selling farm seed and equipment to farmers on their way to markets in Baltimore, and a warehouse that supplied coal, said Reni Lawal, a development associate with MCB who researched the property’s history when applying for the historic tax credit. The Markley family once lived in upstairs quarters. Lawal said she believes the last member of the Markley family moved out in 1955.

The Markley was later used by a magazine, an adult day care program and a church. It has been vacant for about a decade.
