Authors push back on the growing number of AI 'scam' books on Amazon

Amazon.com started requiring writers who want to sell books through its e-book program to tell the company in advance whether their work includes material generated by artificial intelligence.

When the super-influential tech journalist Kara Swisher came out with her new memoir, Burn Book , there were reports of seemingly artificial intelligence-generated biographies of her suddenly coming up on Amazon. Swisher promptly responded, telling The New York Times' Hard Fork podcast , "I sent [Amazon CEO] Andy Jassy a note and said, 'What the f***?' You're costing me money," Swisher said.

But while Swisher was able to get the offending books removed from Amazon, the issue of AI-generated scam books has been of widespread concern for authors, most of whom aren't on email terms with the CEO of Amazon.

"Scam books on Amazon have been a problem for years," says Mary Rasenberger, CEO of the Authors Guild, a group that advocates for writers. But she says the problem has multiplied in recent months. "Every new book seems to have some kind of companion book, some book that's trying to steal sales."

Marie Arana is a writer who spent years researching and writing her book LatinoLand: A Portrait of America's Largest and Least Understood Minority . The book came out in February. The day after its release, she went on Amazon to see how it was doing. "Right below the cover of my book was another cover," Arana says. "The cover said 'America's Largest and Least Understood Minority. A Summary of Latinoland.'"

Arana sent NPR a photo of the search result on Amazon. The book says it was written by Clara Bailey. A review of Bailey's work showed that Bailey had published a number of these so-called summaries and put them up for sale on Amazon. NPR asked an Amazon spokesperson about Bailey but did not receive a related response. And the company did not offer anyone up for an interview when asked, generally, about AI-generated books. Since NPR's inquiry, Bailey's books have been removed from Amazon. Bailey's publishing history still appears on Goodreads , which is owned by Amazon.

AI-generated biographies, summaries and even copycat books tend to offer low-quality writing that makes it easy to flag as AI generated, says Jane Friedman, a writer and publishing industry analyst. She says there's a generic quality to the writing. "It just feels like a human didn't write these," she says. "Humans would — funnily enough — do a better job being bad."

Amazon spokesperson Lindsay Hamilton sent a statement that outlined the recent steps the company has taken on the AI front. Last year, the company implemented a policy where all publishers using Kindle Direct Publishing must provide information about whether their content is AI generated. There is also a cap to the number of titles that can be published in a day.

"We both proactively prevent books from being listed as well as remove books that do not adhere to those guidelines, including content that creates a poor customer experience," the statement says. "We have more recently begun limiting the publication of summaries and workbooks based on existing titles in our store." It adds: "When patterns of abuse warrant it, we also suspend publisher accounts to prevent repeated abuse."

Rasenberger says the publishers posting these books benefit from increasingly more sophisticated AI tools that can generate low-quality "scam" books quickly. "By the time Amazon finds out about them, they've already made some money and they move on to something else," she says.

But the issue of AI-generated books can harm more than just an author's sales numbers.

"It's reputational harm," Friedman says.

Last year, she wrote a blog post outlining her experience with books about publishing that purported to be by her but that she didn't write. "Even the most beginning reader would read it and say, 'This person is not going to give me any helpful information,'" she says. Friedman says that she makes most of her money through paid newsletters and classes she offers and that the books could be seen by potential customers. "And then off they go to find some other better resource."

And while it's possible to flag writing that's AI generated right now, Rasenberger and other writers are thinking ahead to a future where it won't be so easy.

Florence Nightingale is best known as the saintly “Lady With the Lamp,” patrolling the dark corridors of a British military hospital in Constantinople as she tended to wounded and dying soldiers shipped back from the front lines of the Crimean War. In her latest novel, FLIGHT OF THE WILD SWAN (Bellevue Literary Press, 416 pp., paperback, $18.99), Melissa Pritchard makes Nightingale’s heroism even more intimate — and more interesting — by portraying her not as “some sweet, feminine savior” but as a stubborn, tormented striver who spent her youth and early adulthood struggling to break free from the constraints of Victorian society.

Born into a wealthy family, given more education than most women, Nightingale inhabited a gilded cage most would have found easy to accept. We first meet her in 1827 as a 7-year-old exploring her father’s Derbyshire estate and accompany her in her teens and 20s through European travels, a grand tour of Egypt and years of fending off marriage proposals from a well-connected member of Parliament. Yet Nightingale refuses to settle into the comfortable life her parents have planned for her. At 16, she privately dedicates herself to ending the suffering she sees all around, but it’s only when she’s in her early 30s, after surviving a suicide attempt, that she’s allowed to pursue her medical studies. Granted a yearly allowance, she’s finally “free as any man.”

By spending the first half of the novel acquainting readers with Nightingale’s thwarted ambitions, Pritchard adroitly prepares us for the high drama of her attempt to fulfill them in the combat zone. In addition to the appalling conditions she finds at the crumbling Turkish barracks that’s been turned into a hospital, Nightingale must do battle with incompetent bureaucrats and British medical officers who dismiss her band of nurses as “a garden tea party.” Small wonder that she exhausts herself and her companions; even her friends sometimes view her as a “monster.” However, Nightingale is equally hard on herself. By patching up men so they can return to the carnage, she is, she admits, “as much a murderer as any elite officer in this hellish enterprise.”

The friction between Nightingale and her jealous, unstable older sister provides a crucial undercurrent to the central action of Pritchard’s novel. In THE PAINTER’S DAUGHTERS (Simon & Schuster, 342 pp., $27.99), Emily Howes places the relationship of Peggy and Molly Gainsborough front and center. From the very beginning, it’s clear there’s something wrong with Molly. As Peggy puts it, “Her eyes flick onto mine, but she is not there.” Although one year younger, Peggy resolves to care for her sister by hiding her sporadic bouts of mental illness, terrified Molly will wind up in the “madhouse.” Eventually, the entire household is caught up in this charade, lest scandal threaten Thomas Gainsborough’s artistic career. “However much my father rises,” Peggy explains, “he remains a tradesman.”

Peggy is a sympathetic if painfully naïve narrator, and as the sisters grow older the tension between her protective instincts and her own aspirations erupt in a romantic rivalry that can only end in tragedy. Interspersed with Peggy’s account of her family is another narrative, set a generation earlier, that may explain the shameful mystery surrounding her mother’s background and perhaps even the root cause of Molly’s malady. “You are girls of lineage ,” their mother has insisted, “of heritage you cannot possibly understand.”

The malady that afflicted the Thoreau family was consumption, striking down three generations. The insidious influence of the disease, which we now call tuberculosis, lingers in the background of Helen Humphreys’s FOLLOWED BY THE LARK (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 240 pp., $27), in which she strings together a series of vignettes to form a poetic fictional biography of Henry David Thoreau. There are glimpses of his Transcendentalist circle, but Humphreys prefers to concentrate on friendships with the less well-known figures who join him on treks through woods and fields.

To Thoreau, the premature deaths of his brother and a close friend are agonizing reminders of the fragility of life, as are changes coming to Concord, Mass., and to the country as a whole in the decades before the Civil War. He revisits the site of his old house on Walden Pond: “When he listened for the sound of a bird in the forest, all he heard was the steady beat of the wood chopper’s ax.” The roar of a new train line is also audible everywhere. Earning his living as a surveyor, Thoreau has ample opportunity to gauge alterations to the world he once knew.

Still, nature’s glories can’t be eclipsed, and this is where Humphreys’s narrative is most evocative — particularly in the spring, when Thoreau finds it impossible to document so much new life in his journal. “He used to be frustrated by this,” Humphreys writes, “but now that he was older, he just gave over to it when it happened. He was even a bit relieved when it did happen, when spring became a green furnace that burned through every hour.” In the end, he finds individual words and voices less convincing than “the chorus of nature’s cacophony.”

From a creator of ‘The Outsiders’ musical, a novel about a troubled family

‘wolf at the table’ is a provocative but intimate domestic yarn that joins a fine tradition of robust american family sagas.

Across a series of novels and acclaimed plays — including a much-hyped musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s YA classic “The Outsiders,” which opens on Broadway this spring — Adam Rapp has focused on troubled biological and found families. In his new novel “Wolf at the Table,” the dysfunction is allegorical: The scope and tone of “Wolf” suggest that emotional repression is America’s most reliable trait. Its cousin, violence, is a close second.

Early in this grim, engrossing new novel, we get to know Alec, a ne’er-do-well young man from New York state. He’s just been fired from his job at an orchard not long after getting kicked out of his house for stealing from his church. It’s 1964 and he has no marketable skills to speak of, but a fellow drifter he meets offers a suggestion. “Try the Midwest,” he says. “People are nice there.”

What follows is a pointed retort to that stereotype. In his Midwest, cruelty reigns. Alec arrives in the Chicago area in 1973 and soon has a brush with infamous mass killer John Wayne Gacy. In 1966, his sister Myra has a run-in of her own with Richard Speck, who killed eight nursing students. As the story moves into the 21st century, Myra and Alec take divergent paths from their shared experience with evil — altruism for Myra, sociopathy for Alec. But the siblings never quite lose their connection, braided symbols of hope and despair.

It’s a brash, widescreen achievement. “Wolf” joins a fine (if fading) tradition of robust American family sagas mastered by Jonathan Franzen, Jane Smiley and — especially — Joyce Carol Oates, the baroness of bad news in Rust Belt burgs. And much like those writers, Rapp at first seems to be crafting a provocative but intimate domestic yarn. When we meet the Larkin clan in 1951 Elmira, N.Y, the place is suffused with a Cleaver-esque glow of exurban charm. Alec is an altar boy, while Myra is a bookish girl (she’s enchanted by “The Catcher in the Rye”) who has a sweet-natured run-in with Yankees rookie Mickey Mantle. They and their siblings — prim-and-proper Lexy, intellectually challenged Joan, artsy rebel Fiona — are minded by a severely Catholic mother and pipe-smoking dad.

Of course, there’s rot in the rafters. Dad, a war vet, is suppressing undiagnosed PTSD, while Mom’s rigid religious fervor clouds her awareness of the crises her children face. Rapp is deft at slowly introducing the horrors that eventually consume this family. One moment, Alec is making an earnest attempt to get his life in order; the next, he’s accessory to a murder where “an arc of blood sprays onto a Virgin Mary statue dressed with many colorful beaded necklaces.” He communicates his contempt for mom’s neglect by sending her packages designed to stoke offense and fear.

Rapp suggests that the Larkins’ suppression is a national contagion: We’re remarkably talented at acknowledging the horrors in our midst while refusing to do much about them. “The invasion of Cambodia, Richard Nixon, the Beatles breaking up, famine, the assassination of MLK,” Fiona says in a letter to Myra in 1970. “How could a just and thoughtful God allow this kind of stuff to go on? What is there to believe in anymore?”

But, Rapp wants to know, how much can we do? The things God allows to happen won’t go away, after all — indeed, Rapp argues that it’s in our genes. In the Larkin home, psychic damage, if not outright psychosis, is passed on across generations. Dad’s PTSD re-emerges as Alec’s sociopathy; Myra’s husband’s schizophrenia is passed on, in terrifying form, to her son, Ronan, whose rising talent as a playwright is undermined by his own psychotic delusions. Good things in the Larkin’s universe tend to become tainted. “The Catcher in the Rye” goes from Myra’s beloved tale of youthful liberation to a stolen collectible. Mickey Mantle’s all-American good manners are undermined by an expensive Mantle rookie card that Alec uses as a grim bargaining chip.

“Wolf” isn’t explicitly political, but the book’s themes are attuned to a time when our social fractures seem persistent and irreparable. In a telling moment, a mentor of Ronan’s summarizes how the London press will respond to his new play: “They’ll see your doomed characters as victims of the American class system and applaud your blistering critique of a government that forgets its veterans and lost daughters.” He could be talking about “Wolf,” which is also chasing after big statements. Still, Rapp’s take is more nuanced. Myra is good-hearted but never simple — she carries too much baggage as a wife, mother and nurse. Alec is vile, tormenting family members up close and from a distance. But he’s not a one-note monster, and his horrors compel our attention — the novel is strongest when he’s on the stage. If we could figure him out, Rapp suggests, we might figure out other horrors besides.

The root of Alec’s evil is familiar, but the despair under that cruelty is richly imagined: “We’re all just doomed to be what we are,” he manically fumes to himself. “Wolf at the Table” ends tragically, with plenty of doom for everybody. But it also suggests that everybody is on a moral spectrum, searching for some kind of goodness. It’s a novel unromantically but diligently looking for hope — some good luck — in a broken home and broken nation.

ഇത്‌ ഈ പുസ്‌തകത്തിന്റെ മാത്രം അല്ല എല്ലാ ബഷീര്‍ രചനകളുടെയും മാന്ത്രികതയാണ്‌. വായനക്കാര്‍ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ തങ്ങളിലേക്ക്‌ ആവാഹിക്കുന്ന പതിവ്‌ വിദ്യയില്‍ നിന്നും മാറി, കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ വായനക്കാരനെ അങ്ങോട്ട്‌ ആവാഹിക്കുന്നു ബാല്യകാലസഖിയില്‍. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ, ഒറ്റയിരിപ്പിനു വായിച്ചു തീര്‍ക്കാവുന്ന ഈ പുസ്‌തകം വായിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സാകെ കലുഷിതമാകുന്നു. ഈയൊരു അവസ്ഥയ്‌ക്ക്‌ കാരണം മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല, അതിശയോക്തി ഒട്ടും കലരാതെ, യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യത്തോട്‌ പരമാവതി ചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ നിന്നുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ഗ്രന്ഥകര്‍ത്താവ്‌ ബാല്യകാലസഖിയെ നമുക്ക്‌ സമ്മാനിച്ചത്‌.

അവതാരികയില്‍ ശരി. എംപി പോള്‍ പറഞ്ഞപോലെ “ബാല്യകാലസഖി ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നിന്നും വലിച്ചു ചീന്തി എടുത്ത ഒരേടാണ്‌. വക്കില്‍ രക്തം പൊടിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.” ജീവിതമെപ്പോഴും അങ്ങനെയാണെന്നല്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ഏറിയ പങ്കും അങ്ങനെയാണ്‌ താനും. ഒരേയൊരു കാര്യം, ഈ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം അംഗീകരിക്കാം നമ്മള്‍ തയ്യാറല്ല എന്നതാണ്‌.

ബഷീറിന്റെ ബാല്യകാലസഖിയെ കുറിച്ചോര്‍ക്കുമ്പോയൊക്കെ ആദ്യം മനസ്സിലേക്കോടിയെത്തുന്നത്‌ മജീദിന്റെയും സുഹറയുടെയും ബാല്യകാല സൗഹൃദത്തെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന മാഞ്ചുവടും, അവരുടെ പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ സ്‌മാരകമായ ചെമ്പരത്തി ചെടിയും, അവരുടെ വിരഹത്തിന്റെ മൂക സാക്ഷിയായ രാത്രികളുമാണ്‌. ഹോട്ടലിലെ പത്രം കഴുകല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു മജീദ്‌ സുഹറയെ ഓര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ട്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞ രാത്രികള്‍.

നക്ഷത്രങ്ങള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ നീലാകാശത്തിനു താഴെ ടെറസില്‍ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ ഉറങ്ങുന്ന സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ നടുവില്‍ കയറു കട്ടിലില്‍ സുഹറയെ ഓര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ട്‌ കിടക്കുന്ന മജീദ്‌. ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു ചിത്രം ബഷീര്‍ സങ്കല്‌പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്നെനിക്കറിയില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ബാല്യകലസഖിക്കൊപ്പം ഞാന്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്ന ആദ്യ ചിത്രം ഈ രാത്രിയുടെതാണ്‌.

വളരെ ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ തന്നെ മജീദും സുഹറയും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളായിരുന്നു. എനാല്‍ അതിനു മുമ്പ്‌്‌ അവര്‍ ശത്രുക്കളും ആയിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ ബാല്യകാലത്തിന്‌ നഖക്ഷതങ്ങളുടെ എരിവും മാമ്പഴതിന്റെ മധുരവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

കഥ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ഏതൊരു സാധാരണ ബാല്യം പോലെയും സുന്ദരവും കുസൃതി നിറഞ്ഞതുമായ ഒരു ബാല്യകാലമാണ്‌. എന്നാല്‍ ആ ബാല്യം വെറുതെയങ്ങു പറഞ്ഞു പോവുകയല്ല ബഷീര്‍ ചെയ്‌തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. മറിച്ച്‌ ആ ബാല്യം നമ്മെ അനുഭവിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്‌. അതുകൊണ്ട്‌ തന്നെ മജീദിന്റെയും സുഹറയുടെയും ബാല്യം നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം ബാല്യത്തെ പോലെ നമ്മുടെ ഹൃദയത്തോട്‌ ചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ബാല്യത്തില്‍ തന്നെ മജീദും സുഹറയും നമ്മുടെ ഹൃദയം കീഴടക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ ശത്രുതയും സൗഹൃദവും നമ്മളും അനുഭവിക്കുന്നു.

“ചെറുക്കാ, ആ മുയുത്തത്‌ രണ്ടും മുന്നം കണ്ടത്‌ ഞാനാ”, എന്ന്‌ പറയുന്ന സുഹറയെ നമുക്ക്‌ എങ്ങനെ സ്‌നേഹിക്കാതിരിക്കാനാവും! അതുപോലെ, “ഓ മിഷറ്‌്‌ കടിക്കുവല്ലോ!” എന്ന പരിഹാസത്തില്‍ ചവിട്ടി മാവില്‍ കയറുന്ന മജീദിനെയും.

ഒരു സ്വപ്‌ന ജീവിയായ മജീദ്‌ മരങ്ങളില്‍ കയറി ഉച്ചിയിലിരുന്നു വിശാലമായ ലോകത്തെ നോക്കി കാണാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മരത്തിന്റെ അടിയില്‍ നിന്നും “മക്കം കാണാമോ ചെറുക്കാ?” എന്നു ചോദിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മളും മരത്തിന്റെ ചോട്ടിലിരുന്നു മുകളിലേക്ക്‌ നോക്കിപോകും.

സുഹറയും മജീദും വളരുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച്‌ അവരുടെ മനസ്സും വളരുന്നത്‌ കാണാം . ഒട്ടും തന്നെ ഏച്ചുകെട്ടില്ലാത്ത ആ വളര്‍ച്ചയില്‍ ബാല്യകാല സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ പ്രണയിനികളാകുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ തീരെ അസ്വാഭാവികത തോന്നിക്കാതെ എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ വിജയിക്കുന്നു.

ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയിലാണ്‌ ബഷീര്‍ ജീവിതത്തിണ്ടേ സങ്കീര്‍ണതകളെ ഇവിടെ വരച്ചു കാട്ടുന്നത്‌. അതും വളരെ കുറച്ചു വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ.

മജീദ്‌, സുഹറ എന്നീ രണ്ടു കുട്ടികള്‍. അവരുടെ മനസ്സിലൂടെയുള്ള സഞ്ചാരം. ആ രണ്ടു കുട്ടികള്‍ വളരുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച്‌ അവരിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍. ഒരു ആണ്‍ക്കുട്ടിയുടെയും പെണ്‍ക്കുട്ടിയുടെയും ലോകങ്ങള്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം. ദാരിദ്ര്യം എങ്ങനെ നമ്മുടെ സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങളുടെ ചിറകൊടിക്കും. ഒരു മരണം ജീവിതത്തില്‍ എന്തെല്ലാം മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ വരുത്തും. ജീവിത നിലവാരത്തിലെ ഉയര്‍ച്ച താഴ്‌ചകള്‍. ഇതൊക്കെ ഈ ചെറിയ പുസ്‌തകത്തില്‍ ചുരുങ്ങിയ വാക്കുകളില്‍, എന്നാല്‍ ബ്രഹത്തായ അര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ പറയാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു ബഷീറിന്‌. അതുപോലെ കാതുകുത്ത്‌, സുന്നത്‌ കല്യാണം എന്നിവയൊക്കെ അന്ന്‌ എങ്ങനെ ആഘോഷിച്ചു എന്നും വളരെ വിശദമായി തന്നെ ഇതില്‍ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്‌.

അത്ര സൂക്ഷ്‌മമായി പരിശോധിചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ത്തന്നെയും, ഗ്രന്ഥകാരന്റെ ആത്മകഥാംശങ്ങള്‍ ബാല്യകാലസഖിയില്‍ നിന്നും കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ കഴിയും. മജീദിനെ പോലെ ബഷീറും വീട്‌ വിട്ടു ഒരുപാടൊരുപാട്‌ അലഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. പല പല വേഷത്തില്‍, പല ദേശങ്ങളില്‍ അലഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. എല്ലാതരം ജോലികളും ചെയ്‌തിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. മജീദിനെ പോലെ ബഷീറും അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം സമ്പാദ്യമായി കൈയില്‍ കരുതി നാട്ടില്‍ തിരിചെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. മജീദിനെ പോലെ ബഷീറിനും പ്രതാപം നിറഞ്ഞ ബാല്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മജീദ്‌ വീടിലെ ദാരിദ്ര്യം കണ്ട പോലെ ബഷീറിനും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.

മജീദിനും ബഷീറിനും കാണുന്ന മറ്റൊരു സമാനത, ചെടികളിലുള്ള താല്‌പര്യമാണ്‌. ബഷീരിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലും പുസ്‌തകങ്ങളിലും ഒരു പോലെ പച്ച പിടിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്നതാണ്‌ ബഷീറും ചെടികളും തമ്മിലുള്ള ആത്മബന്ധം.

അയൽക്കാർ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബാല്യകാല പ്രണയം, കൗമാരപ്രായത്തിൽ വികാരാധീനമായ പ്രണയത്തിലേക്ക് വിരിഞ്ഞു. മജീദ്, സുഹറ ഇവരാണ് ഇതിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. മജീദിന്റെ പിതാവ് സമ്പന്നനായിരുന്നു, അതിനാൽ പഠനത്തിൽ ഉത്സാഹമില്ലാതിരുന്നിട്ട് കൂടിയും, അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പഠിക്കുവാനായി വിദൂര പട്ടണത്തിലെ ഒരു സ്കൂളിലേക്ക് അയച്ചു. മറുവശത്ത് സുഹ്‌റയുടെ പിതാവിന് രണ്ട് അറ്റങ്ങളും കൂട്ടിമുട്ടിക്കാൻ തന്നെ പ്രായാസപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യനായിരുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ മകളുടെ പഠനത്തിലുള്ള ഇഷ്ടം കണ്ടിട്ട്, മകളെ സ്കൂളിൽ അയയ്ക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ അവളുടെ പിതാവിന്റെ മരണം കൂടുതൽ പഠിക്കുവാനുള്ള അവളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷകളെല്ലാം തകർത്തു. സുഹ്‌റയുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം സ്പോൺസർ ചെയ്യാൻ മജീദ് പിതാവിനോട് അപേക്ഷിച്ചെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹം അത് നിരസിച്ചു.

അച്ഛനുമായുള്ള ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിനെത്തുടർന്ന് മജീദ് വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങുകയും നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് വളരെക്കാലം വിദൂര ദേശങ്ങളിൽ അലഞ്ഞുനടക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മടങ്ങിയെത്തുമ്പോൾ, തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ മുൻ സമ്പത്ത് എല്ലാം ഇല്ലാതായെന്നും തന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സുഹ്‌റ മറ്റൊരാളെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചതായും അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. സ്നേഹം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ ദുഖിതനായി. മുൻപ് വളരെ സുന്ദരിയും ഊർജ്ജസ്വലവുമായിരുന്ന സുഹ്‌റ ഇപ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്താൽ ക്ഷീണിതയായ ഒരു സ്ത്രീയായിരിക്കുന്നു .അങ്ങനെ സങ്കടത്തിലൂടെയാണ് നോവൽ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
