Importance of Happiness:

The opposite of happiness is sadness which is a state of negativity in the mindset. When we remain sad for an extended period of time it can lead to depression. To avoid this state of mind we must always remind ourselves of happenings in our lives that made us happy.

Conclusion:

Though life throws countless challenges at us on a daily basis, if we drown in those challenges we would definitely become depressed. It is important that we find positive things in our daily lives to get excited about and feel the happiness.

Happiness is a state of mind which makes you feel accomplished in life and having everything in this world without a single reason to repent. Well, although there can be no perfect definition of happiness; happiness is when you feel you’re at the top of the world where a sense of complete satisfaction prevails.

The meaning of happiness is relative and varies from people to people. For some, happiness is when you experience professional success, reunions with family and friends, eating out, reading books or watching good movies. While for others, happiness can be accomplished by some weekend activities which might help you de-stress and get the satisfaction of mind.

If you involve yourself in social activities where you help the needy and provide support to the weaker section of the society, you can experience happiness if not anything else. When a young boy flies a kite, plays with mud, and watches the nature, for him, that is the greatest happiness in the world.

The happiness of mind is often considered quite contrary to jealousy and anger which you experience once you have failed or unaccomplished any desired goal. You should always try to rehearse the ways of keeping yourself satisfied and keeping away from negativity to experience peace and happiness in life. True happiness begins where desire ends!

What is happiness? It is a state of being happy. But it does not mean to be happy all the time. Happiness is a feeling of something good that is happening in our life. We feel happy when we achieve something. But happiness is spread when our dear one is happy as well. Some people find true happiness in playing with their pets, while some may find happiness in staying engaged in creative work.

Happiness is often derived from channelizing thoughts to positive thinking. However, it is not as simple as it may sound.

To achieve the state of complete happiness one has to practice on improving the state of life by:

1. Staying contended in life with what you have. Cribbing and grumbling never lead to happiness.

2. Staying focused on the current life instead of daydreaming of the good days or old days.

3. Stop blaming for something that went terribly wrong in life. The life is all about moving on. Stop worrying and set new goals in life.

4. Being thankful to God for all the good things that you have in your life.

5. Having good people around you who can boost up positivity in your life.

Everyone desires to be happy in life. Happiness cannot be achieved without establishing complete control of one’s thoughts as it is very easy to be carried away by the waves of thoughts and emotions surrounding us. Remind yourself of the good things of your life and be thankful about it.

What is happiness? Some would state that happiness implies being well off. Others would state that for them, happiness intends to be sound. You will discover individuals saying that for them happiness implies having love in their life, having numerous companions, a great job, or accomplishing a specific objective. There are individuals, who trust that the want of a specific wish would make happiness in their life; however, it may not be so. Having true happiness is something which is desired by all.

The Path to Happiness:

There are small things which when incorporated into our daily lives, can lead us to the path of happiness. For instance, instead of thinking about problems, we should actually be thinking about the solutions. Not only will we be happier but we shall also be able to solve our problems faster. Similarly, once in a while, you start the day with the longing to achieve a few targets. Toward the day’s end, you may feel disappointed and miserable, in light of the fact that you haven’t possessed the capacity to do those things. Take a look at what you have done, not at what you have not possessed the capacity to do. Regularly, regardless of whether you have achieved a ton amid the day, you let yourself feel disappointed, due to some minor assignments you didn’t achieve. This takes away happiness from you.

Again, now and then, you go throughout the day effectively completing numerous plans, yet as opposed to feeling cheerful and fulfilled, you see what was not cultivated and feel troubled. It is out of line towards you.

Each day accomplishes something good which you enjoy doing. Happiness is defined by different people in different ways. Some find happiness in having a luxurious life while some find it in having loving people around them rather than money. True happiness lies within us and our expectation of happiness. It is something that should be felt and cannot be explained in words.

Even though this simple word has a lot of meaning hidden in it, many fail to understand the real one or feel the real happiness. Finding happiness in the outer world is the main reason for this failure. Nothing can buy you happiness, whether be the favorite thing you desire for or the person you love the most or the career you build, unless and until you feel it within yourself.

Ways to be Happy:

Bring happiness and soulful life to yourself rather than expecting it from the outside world like things, money, etc. Being happy is not as easy as advised to be one happier person. To be content and happy with whatever you have and yourself it takes time and patience. You should practice to be a happier person in all moments and eventually you will notice that no sorrow can sink you down.

Whatever good or bad happened in your past shouldn’t bother your present. Learn to live today with more happiness than yesterday and forget about your past sadness for a harmonious life. Thankfulness to the life you got is another important character you should acquire to be happy. If you compare yourself with someone with better luxurious life, then you will never be happy or content and do it the other way.

Don’t depress your mind with bad and negative thoughts about yourself and around. Try to find every goodness in a situation you face and accept the things that already happened, whether good or bad. Never forget to choose merrier and positive people to be closer to you so that their vibes will also help you in being one merrier person.

Whenever you feel low and depressed never hesitate to go to those around you to find happiness. But be aware of those negative ones that may pull you even deeper into the bad thoughts. Always surround yourself with positive thinking and motivating people so that you can rise higher even from the deepest fall.

Happiness is nothing but a feeling that will be seeded into your soul only if you wish to and nothing other than yourself can indulge this feeling in you. Don’t spoil your life finding happiness somewhere else.

Happiness is a very complicated thing. Happiness can be used both in emotional or mental state context and can vary largely from a feeling from contentment to very intense feeling of joy. It can also mean a life of satisfaction, good well-being and so many more. Happiness is a very difficult phenomenon to use words to describe as it is something that can be felt only. Happiness is very important if we want to lead a very good life. Sadly, happiness is absent from the lives of a lot of people nowadays. We all have our own very different concept of happiness. Some of us are of the opinion that we can get happiness through money, others believe they can only get true happiness in relationships, some even feel that happiness can only be gotten when they are excelling in their profession.

As we might probably know, happiness is nothing more than the state of one being content and happy. A lot of people in the past, present and some (even in the future will) have tried to define and explain what they think happiness really is. So far, the most reasonable one is the one that sees happiness as something that can only come from within a person and should not be sought for outside in the world.

Some very important points about happiness are discussed below:

1. Happiness can’t be bought with Money:

A lot of us try to find happiness where it is not. We associate and equate money with happiness. If at all there is happiness in money then all of the rich people we have around us would never feel sad. What we have come to see is that even the rich amongst us are the ones that suffer depression, relationship problems, stress, fear and even anxiousness. A lot of celebrities and successful people have committed suicide, this goes a long way to show that money or fame does not guarantee happiness. This does not mean that it is a bad thing to be rich and go after money. When you have money, you can afford many things that can make you and those around you very happy.

2. Happiness can only come from within:

There is a saying that explains that one can only get true happiness when one comes to the realisation that only one can make himself/herself happy. We can only find true happiness within ourselves and we can’t find it in other people. This saying and its meaning is always hammered on in different places but we still refuse to fully understand it and put it into good use. It is very important that we understand that happiness is nothing more than the state of a person’s mind. Happiness cannot come from all the physical things we see around us. Only we through our positive emotions that we can get through good thoughts have the ability to create true happiness.

Our emotions are created by our thoughts. Therefore, it is very important that we work on having only positive thoughts and this can be achieved when we see life in a positive light.

Happiness is desired by every person. However, there are very few persons that attain happiness easily in life.

It is quite tough to get happiness in life as people usually link it with the things and the people around them. The simple fact is that happiness usually starts as well as finishes with your own life. All those people who understand this fact easily get the true happiness in their life.

Happiness in Relationships:

There are lots of people who link happiness with the money and there are few others also who link it with the personal relations. It is very important to know that if you are not happy with yourself then, it is not possible to remain happy in your relationship as well.

The problems in the relationship have been increasing speedily and the main cause behind it is the huge amount of expectation that we have from the other individual. We always want them to make us feel happy. For example, some people feel happy if their partner plans a surprise for them or if he/she buy them a new dress. But all these things are not a true source of happiness in life.

Ways of Developing Happiness:

The lack of happiness in the relationship not only exists in couples but also in the relationship of friends, sister – brother or parent-child.

The following are the few ways that help in creating happiness in the relationships:

1. Pay Attention to Yourself:

You should always pay attention to yourself to get happiness. You should not give importance to any other person in your life in comparison to yourself and also expect the same from that person. Giving too much importance to the other and not receiving anything back from them makes a person disappointed and happiness gets lost.

2. Have some Initiative:

You can make the plan of traveling outside yourself. Don’t wait for your parent, partner or kid to take you outside. You can ask them to come along with you if they want. But, if they decline your offer then, don’t get discouraged and carry on your trip plan along with full happiness.

3. Provide some Space:

It is necessary to provide some amount of space to every individual and spend some time with oneself. It helps in creating happiness.

Happiness is Necessary for Good Life:

It does not matter that whether you are a working expert, a schoolchild, a retired person or a housewife, happiness is necessary for everybody to live a good and happy life. Happiness is essential for an individual’s emotional comfort. A person who is not fit emotionally will feel an impact on his complete health that will drain very soon.

Unluckily, despite the fact that happiness is tremendously necessary, people do not give so much importance to all those habits which can keep them happy. They are so excessively captivated inside their professional lives as well as other nuts and bolts of life that they overlook to relish the happy memories of their life. It is also the main reason that problems like anxiety, stress, and depression are increasing gradually in people’s lives today.

Happiness is an internal feeling. It is a healthy emotion. Happiness helps us to stay fit both mentally and physically. Happiness helps in lowering stress and keeping away from any health issues. The reason of happiness may be different for different person. You just need to find out what actually makes you happy. So, if you want real happiness in life then, you need to understand that only you can make yourself happy.

“There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way” this sentence has been attributed to Buddha. Well, at least that’s what it says on one sticker in my dorm room. The fact is that man has occupied himself with the path to happiness for millennia. Something happened during our evolution that made us deeply question the purpose of our existence. People like Buddha are part of the answer, or at least they try to give us the answer.

Since these questions have troubled us there have been many who sought to answer them and by doing so, they formed philosophies and religions. The search for earthly happiness will make many do incredible deeds but if this energy is used in the wrong way it can cause great suffering. How can we know which recipe for happiness is the best one and what we should devote our time and attention to? The trick is, there is no right answer and as the first sentence of this essay states, there is no way to be happy because being happy is the way. That’s how I got my head around this problem, let me explain some more.

Source of Suffering:

At the expense of sounding Buddhist, when you think about most of the things that make us unhappy are material in nature. They are the things that we really do not need but they make us feel happy. This notion is not just something the wise man from the 6 th century BC India expressed but many more have said this before and after him. Socrates and Jesus to name just a few.

What I find interesting in the struggle for happiness is the paradox present in the instructions to reach it. One has a  thought all through life to be good and hard working so he can get the things he wants and needs later on in life but then as you start to struggle for the money you realize that your life is turning into a money grabbing game. So, the source of happiness and stability becomes the source of all your anxiety and aggression. Naturally, we can see how some people thought that all material things stand on the path to our happiness.

But what about the immaterial, what if you are in love with someone you are not supposed to love? The above instruction would tell you to surrender your heart’s desire and you will be free from constraints. Is this happiness? Or is it the struggle to do and achieve the impossible the real source of happiness?

Source of Happiness:

People often forget that they are animals and like all of them they have a logic to their nature and their own specific needs. Like all the other animal’s people are caught in the struggle for existence and sometimes surviving the day can be a real ordeal if you get caught in the wrong circumstances. Men has made himself safe from most of the things that could have harmed him in nature but in doing so he forgot what he has made.

Think about the present from a historical perspective. Even a hundred years ago most people lost up to 80% of all their children to diseases, clean water was a rarity for most of our existence, and people actually had to labor to make food and to have enough to feed their family all through the year. The fact is we have a lot to be grateful for in the present age and the fact that some of us are unhappy because we do not have all our heart’s desires is just a symptom of collective infancy. Having all of your loved ones around you, with a roof to shelter under and with lots of delicious food is the only source of happiness man needs everything else should just be a bonus.

Happiness cannot be found by rejecting everything that is material or by earning more money then you can spend. The trick is to find balance by looking at yourself and the lives of people around you and by understanding that there is a lot to be grateful for, the trick is to stop searching for a path and to understand that we are already walking on one. As long as we are making any type of list of the prerequisite for our life of happiness, we will end up unsatisfied because life does not grant wishes we are the ones that make them come true. Often the biggest change in our lives comes from a simple change of perspective rather than from anything we can own.

Happiness is the state of emotional wellbeing and being contented. Happiness is expressed through joyful moments and smiles. It is a desirable feeling that everybody want to have at all times. Being happy is influenced by situations, achievements and other circumstances. Happiness is an inner quality that reflects on the state of mind. A peaceful state of mind is considered to be happiness. The emotional state of happiness is mixture of feelings of joy, satisfaction, gratitude, euphoria and victory.

How happiness is achieved:

Happiness is achieved psychologically through having a peaceful state of mind. By a free state of mind, I mean that there should be no stressful factors to think about. Happiness is also achieved through accomplishment of goals that are set by individuals. There is always happiness that accompanies success and they present feelings of triumph and contentment.

To enable personal happiness in life, it is important that a person puts himself first and have good self-perception. Putting what makes you happy first, instead of putting other people or other things first is a true quest towards happiness. In life, people tend to disappoint and putting them as a priority always reduces happiness for individuals. There is also the concept of practicing self-love and self-acceptance. Loving oneself is the key to happiness because it will mean that it will not be hard to put yourself first when making decisions.

It is important for an individual to control the thoughts that goes on in their heads. A peaceful state of mind is achieved when thoughts are at peace. It is recommended that things that cause a stressful state of mind should be avoided.

Happiness is a personal decision that is influenced by choices made. There is a common phrase on happiness; “happiness is a choice” which is very true because people choose if they want to be happy or not. Happiness is caused by circumstances and people have the liberty to choose those circumstance and get away from those that make them unhappy.

Happiness is also achieved through the kind of support system that an individual has. Having a family or friends that are supportive will enable the achievement of happiness. Communicating and interacting with the outside world is important.

Factors Affecting Happiness:

Sleep patterns influence the state of mind thus influence happiness. Having enough sleep always leads to happy mornings and a good state of mind for rest of the day. Sleep that is adequate also affects the appearance of a person. There is satisfaction that comes with having enough sleep. Enough rest increases performance and productivity of an individual and thus more successes and achievements are realized and happiness is experienced.

Another factor affecting happiness is the support network of an individual. A strong support network of family and friends results in more happiness. Establishing good relationships with neighbors, friends and family through regular interactions brings more happiness to an individual. With support network, the incidences of stressful moments will be reduced because your family and friends will always be of help.

Sexual satisfaction has been established to affect happiness. It is not just about getting the right partner anymore. It is about having a partner that will satisfy you sexually. There is a relationship between sex and happiness because of the hormones secreted during sexual intercourse. The hormone is called oxytocin and responsible for the happiness due to sexual satisfaction. Satisfaction also strengthens the relationships between the partners and that creates happiness.

Wealth also plays a significant role in happiness. There is a common phrase that is against money and happiness: “money cannot buy happiness” is this true? Personally, I believe that being financially stable contributes to happiness because you will always have peace of mind and many achievements. Peace of mind is possible for wealthy people because they do not have stressors here and then compared to poor people. Also, when a person is wealthy, they can afford to engage in luxurious activities that relaxes the mind and create happiness. For a person to be wealthy, they will have had many achievements in life. These achievement make them happy.

A good state of health is an important factor that influences the happiness of individuals. A healthy person will be happy because there are no worries of diseases or pain that they are experiencing. When a person is healthy, their state of mind is at peace because they are not afraid of death or any other health concerns. Not only the health of individuals is important, but also the health of the support system of the person. Friends and family’s state of health will always have an impact on what we feel as individuals because we care about them and we get worried whenever they are having bad health.

Communication and interactions are important in relation to an individual’s happiness. Having a support system is not enough because people need to communicate and interact freely. Whenever there are interactions like a social gathering where people talk and eat together, more happiness is experienced. This concept is witnessed in parties because people are always laughing and smiling in parties whenever they are with friends.

Communication is key to happiness because it helps in problem solving and relieving stressors in life. Sharing experiences with a support system creates a state of wellbeing after the solution is sought. Sometime when I am sad, I take my phone and call a friend or a family member and by the time the phone call is over, I always feel better and relieved of my worries.

Happiness is an important emotion that influences how we live and feel on a daily basis. Happiness is achieved in simple ways. People have the liberty to choose happiness because we are not bound by any circumstances for life. Factors that influence happiness are those that contribute to emotional wellbeing. Physical wellbeing also affects happiness. Every individual finds happiness in their own because they know what makes them happy and what doesn’t.

Peace is a word, which has multiple meanings. It is a word with several dimensions used in varying contexts. For instance, Anderson (2014) posited that peace can be used in macro as well as micro contexts.

Global peace (e.g., peace treaties between countries; the harmonious relationship between societies) is an example of macro context usage.

On the other hand, personal peace (e.g., interpersonal peace and inner peace) is an example of micro-context usages. In this article, we focus on the micro  context of peace. More specifically, inner peace in particular.

The dominant meaning of “peace” in Western civilization is the absence of violence (Anderson, 2004). However, the concept of associating inner peace within an individual is rooted in non-Western languages, cultures, and religions (Anderson, 2004). Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, and Sanskrit have several words for peace.

In Sanskrit, words for peace also include Shanti and Chaina , which refers to an individual’s spiritual or inner peace and mental calmness (Anderson, 2004). Apart from a linguistic inquiry into peace, in some religions (e.g., Buddhism, Jainism, etc.), peace is used to underscore inner dimension (i.e., the person) more than the outer dimension (i.e., the environment) (Barua, 2014).

In general, peace of mind or inner peace refers to a deliberate state of either psychological or spiritual calmness despite the potential presence of stressors. It is a homeostatic psychological state, which results in the optimal functioning of the mind.

It has to be noted that given the complexity of the word – peace or inner peace, there is no general consensus with regards to its precise definition. Therefore, for the sake of clarity with regards to this article, we prescribe to the inner peace definition proposed by Ward (2010), Barua (2014) and Gogava, Poghosyan, and Aslanov (2018), which has also been employed in several works (e.g., Day, Casey, Ward, Howells, & Vess, 2013).

Inner peace refers to

“a state of calm, serenity and tranquility of mind that arise due to having no sufferings or mental disturbances such as worry, anxiety, greed, desire, hatred, ill-will, delusion and/or other defilements”

(Gogava et al., 2018, p. 4).

“Inner peace refers to emotional self-regulation and the ability to achieve a state of dynamic emotional equilibrium and competence”

(Ward, 2010, p. 48).

Like peace, the word happiness is complex and subjective (for various definitions on happiness, see Kim-Prieto, Diener, Tamir, Scollon, & Diener, 2005 and Delle Fave et al., 2016). In fact, some scholars have even questioned the usefulness of happiness definition, equating it as a qualia concept (Wierzbicka, 2009).

For the sake of this article, we prescribe to the most popular definition that has been used by researchers from various fields (e.g., psychology and economists) (Delle Fave et al., 2016).

Happiness is typically associated with the concepts of life satisfaction and subjective wellbeing , which are a total score of cognitive and affective components of one’s mental state. Therefore, the following definition – happiness – refers to “to people’s evaluations of their lives – evaluations that are both affective and cognitive” (Diener, 2000, p. 34).

Peace and happiness are associated concepts (Cohrs, Christie, White, & Das, 2013). For instance, at the macro level, peaceful countries report a higher level of happiness in general. Likewise, a perusal of the definitions related to peace and happiness above makes their association quite clear. Some commonalities between these concepts include (Cohrs et al., 2013):

  • Peace and happiness concepts are related to positive psychology, which includes peace psychology as well.
  • Peace and happiness have been described as a positive human experience.
  • Peace is associated with terms such as serenity, harmony, happiness, and well-being.

Finding Inner Peace in Nature

That is, does peace lead to happiness? Or, conversely, does happiness lead to peace?

In other words, the causality is not clear. Perhaps, the best way to describe their relationship for the time being, lest empirical studies prove it otherwise is – there is a symbiotic relationship between these two concepts. To elucidate, both inner peace and happiness are associated with positive emotions (e.g., Lyubomirsky, King, & Diener 2005).

Therefore, experiencing positive emotions can lead to increment in one’s inner peace as well as happiness levels.

There are several ways of enhancing one’s inner peace and happiness. Below, we list three simple ways to achieve inner peace and happiness goals. Please be advised that the following ways are by no means an exhaustive list.

Several experts and philosophical treatise have alluded to human’s interaction with nature in increasing one’s inner peace. For instance, Robert Puff, a contributor to Psychology Today noted two types of human-nature interactions that can lead to increment in one’s inner peace and happiness levels.

  • Nature in the short-term: Taking short walks outside on an everyday basis while abstaining from using one’s electronic devices.
  • Nature in the long-term: Taking nature retreats for a few days. These retreats give us an opportunity to avoid day-to-day stress (e.g., work commute, workplace pressure, etc.) and focus on our bodies and minds. Retreats come in several forms and shapes such as visiting national parks, religious and non-religious retreat centers, among others.

The above proposition has been corroborated by several research studies (for an overview, see Capaldi, Dopko, & Zelenski, 2014). For instance, in their meta-analytic study, Capaldi et al. found that the human-nature relationship is connected such that being connected to nature can potentially lead to happiness.

2. Meditation

The health benefits of meditation have been well documented (e.g., Holzel et al., 2011). Examples of benefits include decrement in anxiety (Hofman, Sawyer, Witt, & Oh, 2010), reduction in cortisol levels (Carlson et al., 2007) and depression (Hofmann et al., 2010), among others.

In particular mindfulness meditation has been proposed to be a great way to enhance one’s wellbeing. Mindfulness refers to “ nonjudgmental attention to experiences in the present moment” (Holzel et al., 2011, p. 538), which can be cultivated by meditation practices such as sitting meditation, walking meditation, or mindful movements.

Meditation enhances an individual’s attention regulation (i.e., decrease in being distracted), emotion regulation (e.g., accepting one’s emotional state), and change in one’s self-perception (i.e., detachment from identification with a static sense of self) (Holzel et al., 2011) that leads to experiencing more positive emotions associated with happiness and inner peace.

In short, dedicating some time every day to practice mindfulness meditation is a definite route to increased inner peace and happiness. Here is further information related to meditation and practice .

3. Gratefulness

Being grateful for all that you have in life is one way to achieve inner peace and happiness.

Some scholars have even noted that happiness and gratefulness are one and the same. For example, the schematic hypothesis maintains that grateful individuals are more likely to notice positivity in life, and this influences their perception towards life events (Wood, Froh, & Geraghty, 2010).

It has been found that grateful people are well aware of life-challenges but choose not to focus on it. Instead, they underscore on the interconnectedness of life and are less propelled to materialistic goals than the general population (Easterbrook, 2003).

How to practice gratitude or being grateful? One approach to boost an individual’s gratefulness is the deliberate practice of counting one’s blessings and another means is to keep gratitude journals (Lai & O’Carroll, 2012).

In Sanskrit, the word “mantra” translates to mind tools or instruments. Considered to be sacred and to have a powerful impact on reprogramming our subconscious mind. When repeated frequently, it purifies one’s mind and soul.

“Happiness is our choice of not leaving our mind and soul at the mercy of the sways of excitement. Happiness cannot eliminate sorrow, suffering, pain or death from the scheme of things, but it can help keep fear, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, pessimism and other fathers of unhappiness at bay.”

Sultan discusses what happiness means to her personally. It provides an escape from all the dreariness and lousy news of daily life, not eliminating negative thoughts but keeping them at a distance, even just for a moment. She writes that to be happy; we should not base our happiness on the outcomes of our actions. We cannot control the world around us, so we should not link our happiness to it. If something doesn’t go our way, that is just how the world works. It is useless to be sad over what we cannot control.

4.   Happiness is Overrated by John Gorman

“Our souls do float across the sea of life, taking on water as they go, sinking ever so slightly — perhaps even imperceptibly — into despair. But our souls are not the bucket. Happiness itself is. And it’s the bucket we use to pour water out our souls and keep us afloat. What we really need is peace. Peace patches the holes in our souls and stops the leaking. Once we have peace, we will no longer need to seek happiness.”

In his essay, Gorman reflects on how he stopped trying to chase happiness and instead focused on finding peace in life. He writes that we are often so desperate looking for happiness that our lives become complicated, chaotic, and even depressing at times. It trivializes people’s misfortunes and sufferings, telling them to be happy with what they have instead. Mahajan opposes this, believing that everyone’s feelings are valid. She writes that it’s okay to be sad or angry at times, and the stigma around “negative feelings” should be erased. When we force ourselves to be happy, we may feel emotionally numb or even sad, the exact opposite of being happy.

Happiness underlying factors are considerable from two dimensions: endogenic factors (biological, cognitive, personality and ethical sub-factors) and exogenic factors (behavioral, socialcultural, economical, geographical, life events and aesthetics sub-factors). Among all endogenic factors, biological sub-factors are the significant predictors of happiness. Existence of significant differences in temperament and happiness of infants is an indicator of biological influences. Therefore, this study aimed to consider biological factors that underlie happiness. At the first, all of the biological factors in relation with happiness were searched from following websites: PubMed, Wiley& Sons, Science direct (1990–2014). Then, the articles divided into five sub-groups (genetic, brain and neurotransmitters, endocrinology and hormones, physical health, morphology and physical attractiveness). Finally, a systematic review performed based on existing information. Results of studies on genetic factors indicated an average effectiveness of genetic about 35 -50 percent on happiness. In spite of difficulties in finding special genes, several genes distributed to emotion and mood. Neuroscience studies showed that some part of brain (e.g. amygdala, hipocamp and limbic system) and neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine, serotonin, norepinefrine and endorphin) play a role in control of happiness. A few studies pointed to the role of cortisol and adrenaline (adrenal gland) and oxitocin (pituitary gland) in controlling happiness. Physical health and typology also concluded in most related studies to have a significant role in happiness. Therefore, according to previous research, it can be said that biological and health factors are critical in underlying happiness and its role in happiness is undeniable.

Introduction

During the history of psychology, this branch of science studied the human being disorders such as anxiety, depression, and violence and so on. First, the goal of clinical professions was treating patients’ states from negative to normal, or as Seligman suggested “from minus five to a zero”( 1 ). This perspective in psychology called negative psychology. After World War II, positive psychology developed as a new area. Positive psychology emphasized that psychology is not only studying impairments, injuries and disorders, but it can study the strengths and abilities of individuals. Positive psychology included such contents as Happiness, Life quality, Optimism and so on ( 2 ).

For decades, researchers tried to study and understand happiness predictors. Some researchers believe that happiness is due to genetic and inherited factors and others believe that happiness caused by environmental factors like: high income, education, being active during life. Results of previous studies suggest that happiness is not caused by just one or two factors but it is a result of integrated several factors. As a whole, two general factors influence emotions in individuals. Happiness as an emotion formed as a general interaction between internal (endogenic) and external (exogenic) factors. It must be noted that each factor has a different weight in this relation ( 2 – 4 ).

Biological factors as endogenic factor are significant predictors of happiness. Of course, happiness is not a typical subject that investigated by biologists, but a biological perspective is useful for interpretation of happiness or the quality of life ( 2 ). Therefore, this study aimed to consider biological factors that underlie happiness.

At the first, all of the biological factors in relation with happiness were searched from following websites: PubMed, Wiley& Sons, Science direct (1990–2014). Then, the articles divided into five sub-groups (genetic, brain and neurotransmitters, endocrinology and hormones, physical health, morphology and physical attractiveness). Finally, a systematic review performed based on existing information.

Genetics Factors

In the recent years appeared a new branch of human psychobiology: a genetic approach to well-being and happiness. Twin studies suggested that genetic factors count for 35 -50 percent of happiness ( 5 ).

In a comprehensive investigation, happiness (subjective well-being) was measured in a birth-record-based sample of several thousand middle-aged twins using the Well-Being scale of Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire. Socioeconomic status, educational attainment, family income, marital status, an indicant of religious commitment could not account for more than about 3% of the variance in well-being. However, from 44% to 52% of the variance in well-being were associated with genetic variation. When twins have been retested after few years, authors found that the heritability of the stable component of subjective well-being approaches 80% ( 6 ).

What kind of genetic mechanisms make a person happy? It is an important question in this field. Finding special genes in happiness is a difficult task, but recently progresses in molecule genetic open a new way to neurobiology markers of happiness. Therefore, we hope to find the answer and now several genes for mood and emotional characteristics identified ( Table 1 ). Most of studies focused on mood disorders such as depression ( 7 ). More specific studies about happiness needed to clarify our knowledge.

Genes related to mood and emotional characteristics ( 8 )

Among all related genes with mood and emotional characteristics, effects of two genes investigated directly on happiness: 5-HTTLPRand MAO-A Studies suggested an association between 5-HTTLPR and life satisfaction as a cognitive dimension of happiness ( 8 – 11 ). This gene is coding serotonin distribution in brain cells and therefore leads to mood regulation. There are two different functional forms for this gene: Long one (L), Short one (S). L produces transporter- protein molecules and conducts serotonin transmitter in nerve cells. S produces high-level activity for the serotonin — dependent brain system that regulates mood and behavior. Each person has two kind of a gene that called allele and each of them inherited from parents. However, some people have two S alleles and another people have one L and one S. people who have one L, their life satisfaction is 8% more than others are. Those who have two L allele, their life satisfaction are 17% more than people that have just one S allele. In subjects with L version 35% are very satisfied with life, 34% are satisfied while in subjects with S version only 19% are satisfied( 9 ). MAO-A is introduced as a gene that involved in regulating happiness. This gene that located on chromosome X involved in mood regulation and it is a catabolic enzyme for serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenalin ( 12 , 13 ).

“MAO-A, possesses a variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism (MAO-A-uVNTR), resulting in genotypes with low-activity (MAO-A-L) and high-activity (MAO-A-H) alleles” ( 13 ). The MAO-A-L allele is a risk factor for stress-related negative consequences such as alcoholism aggressiveness and antisocial problems ( 14 – 16 ).

Researches indicated that in women, the low expression allele of the monoamine oxidize (MAO-A-L) gene predicts higher self-reported happiness ( 13 ).

Brain and Neurotransmitters

All of the activities managed by brain. Thoughts, feelings, activities, learning and love, all conducted by brain. Mood and emotions are not except for this role.

“The emotion circuitry of the brain is complex, involving primarily structures in the prefrontal cortex, amygdale, hippocampus, anterior cingulated cortex, and insular cortex. These structures normally work together to process and generate emotional information and emotional behavior. Research has particularly focused on the prefrontal cortex which, unlike most other brain regions involved in emotion processing, shows asymmetric activation in relation to positive and negative emotions” ( 17 ). Davidson and his colleagues have reported large individual differences in baseline levels of asymmetric activation in prefrontal cortex, related to a person’s typical emotional style. Individuals with a positive emotional style show higher levels of left than right prefrontal activation at rest (using EEG or fMRI), while those with a negative emotional style tend to show higher levels of right than left prefrontal activation at rest ( 18 – 20 ). Davidson and colleagues have also reported that, independent of emotional style; induced negative mood increases relative right-sided activation, whereas induced positive mood increases relative left-sided activation ( 21 ).

Limbic system that is placed in the central area of brain has the most influence on identifying the form of emotions. Increasing in metabolism of limbic system leads to depression in individuals.

At the other hand, studies showed that positive and negative moods affected by brain chemical in several ways. Two of the most important neuro-transmitters that involved in mood are dopamine and serotonin. Positive mood and negative mood mediated by dopamine and serotonin levels.

Perhaps the most influential neurochemical theory of positive mood is presented by Ashby et al. ( 22 ). The two main elements of their theory are that: (i) positive mood is associated with (but not necessarily caused by) increased levels of dopamine in the brain and (ii) some of the changes in cognition observed in positive mood are due to the increased dopamine levels associated with positive mood.

In contrast, Ashby et al. argue that the effects of negative mood are against of positive mood. One might predict that negative mood is simply associated with lower dopamine levels ( 22 ).

Another neurochemical agent that associated with emotional states is serotonin (5HT). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that mediated satisfaction, happiness and optimism. Serotonin levels are reduced in depression, and most modern anti-depressant drugs, known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), act by increasing the amount of serotonin available to brain cells. However, what is the relationship between serotonin and positive mood? Researches indicated that increased of serotonin level was related to positive mood ( 23 ).

Norepinephrine is another neurotransmitter that associated with the level of happiness. Antidepressants such as the selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (Reboxetine) also induce a positive emotional perceptual bias in healthy subjects suggesting that norepinephrine positively colors the emotional perception of facial expressions in humans. “Recognition that norepinephrine regulates neuronal excitability in the basolateral amygdale by facilitation of GABA release, demonstrates a potential neuroanatomical locus for this effect”( 24 ).

Endorphin also studied as a neurotransmitter in happiness. Endorphins are endogenous opioid peptides that function as neurotransmitters. They are released during continuous exercise, fear, love, music, chocolates eating, laughter, sex, orgasm etc. Increased level of endorphin inhibited pain in the body and reduced level of endorphin inhibited positive feelings.

“In most of the diseases doctors suggest exercises such as walking, running, workouts, laughing exercise, meditation, listening music and all these exercises are responsible for the release of endorphin hormone or they are the stimuli to release this hormone which gives them strength, confidence and gives a good mood to them a mood of well-being and happy”( 25 ).

Melatonin or n- acetyl- 5- methoxytryptamine is a hormone that is made by the pineal gland in the brain during night. It is linked with how our body gets ready for sleep. Melatonin levels vary in 24-hour cycles and are controlled by being in bright light. Its level increase in general between 21 to 22 and then decrease in the morning ( 26 ). Studies showed that melatonin level is related to happiness level. Melatonin has a role in depression and some of antidepressants increase the melatonin in blood ( 26 ).

Since each neurotransmitter coded by a special gene, genetic factors have a clear and significant effect on happiness ( Fig.1 ).

Effects of genes on happiness neurotransmitters

Hormones and Endocrine glands

Endocrine glands with release hormones control various processes like growth, metabolism, and emotional regulation and so on. Endocrines included glands and other cells that produce hormone. In several studies, the role of some glands in regulating mood states indicated. Most related glands with mood states are pituitary and adrenal glands. Studies suggested that some released hormones from these glands have a fundamental role in happiness and mood regulation that explained in the following.

Hydrocortisone is a well-known Glucocorticoids in the body that is released from adrenal glands. This hormone release in response of inflammation or decrease the level of Glucocorticoid. This hormone regulate by CRH that release from hypothalamus and increase ACTH. ACTH increases Cortisol hormone. The role of this hormone in psychological process is managing stress. Several studies investigated the relation between Cortisol and depression as a contrary dimension of happiness.

Cortisol has been shown to be a consistent marker for depression. High levels of morning Cortisol have been linkedto depression and neuroticism. Also, atypical Cortisol secretion patterns have been linked to depression, stress, and anxiety( 27 ). Researchers, according to thesefindings, suggest that happiness related to level of Cortisol in the body. Is it a correct question?

Researches indicate that less salivary Cortisol is good predictor of happiness ( 28 ).

However, some researches directly investigated level of Cortisol on the body and its effect on happiness, findings showed that level of Cortisol is not a predictor of happiness ( 29 ). The relation of happiness and level of Cortisol needs to more studies.

Adrenaline (also known as Epinephrine) is a hormone and a neurotransmitter that releases from Adrenal glands. Adrenaline has many functions in the body, regulating heart rate, blood vessel and air passage diameters, and metabolic shifts; Adrenaline release is a crucial component of the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system.

Therefore, adrenaline produces similar effects to Cortisol, such as increased heart rate and immune system suppression. Researches indicate that urinary adrenaline is a good predictor of happiness ( 28 ).

Individuals with higher levels of “personal growth” and “purpose in life” registered lower and more stable levels of salivary Cortisol and urinary Adrenaline ( 28 ).

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that composed of nine amino acids ( 30 ). A hormone released from pituitary gland and control uterine spasms and breast feeding stimulus. Recently researches showed that Oxytocin causes a wide spectrum of behavioral and physiological effects mediated through receptors within the brain, such as maternal, sexual and social behaviors ( 31 ). Oxitocin facilitates the relationship with others and associated with positive social behaviors, so it assumes that related with happiness. While relationship has a strong effect on life satisfactory and there is a significant correlation between happiness and social relationship, then Oxitocin can be a mechanism that produces happiness through facilitating social relations ( 32 , 33 ).

A biological model of happiness in presented in which one’s genes, developmental history and basal physiologic state effect the release of OXT after a positive social stimulus. The change in OXT affects Happiness. The change in OXT also affects happiness directly via the HOME (Human Oxytocin Mediated Empathy) circuit ( 34 )( Fig.2 ).

Effects of OXT on happiness

Physical health

Medicine and psychological findings showed that positive emotion reactions against life events can influence in various ways on physiologic characteristics. Therefore, several studies investigate the association between physical health and happiness. A group of researchers studied the general association between physical health and happiness and others investigate the relation between physical illness (hypertension, bulimia…) and happiness.

Recently, several studies concluded that positive mood in individuals is a strong predictor of physical health an there is a significant correlation between positive mood and physical health ( 35 – 38 ). Researchers stated that people with happiness experience a long life ( 39 ). People with happiness behave healthier (weight control and practice) than others ( 40 ). Moreover, people with happiness inhibited the risky behaviors ( 37 ).

Having positive mood and happiness correlated with decreasing some illnesses such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and fatness. Researchers find a strong relation between local of brain that manage weight and metabolism and areas that control cognition and emotions ( 41 ). Fatness is likely a risk factor for depression and then significantly decreases the quality of life ( 42 ).

Researchers indicated that rate of hypertension is low among happy societies ( 43 ). In addition, researchers concluded that special emotions like fear, anger and happy, play a clear and important role in psychopathology and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Recent studies showed that people with happiness can more fight with cancer and more survive. Some researchers used music therapy to increase positive emotions in individual with cancer; they conclude that music therapy has a significant effect on dealing with cancer ( 44 ). Van Dom 1989 described that positive attitudes can stop the serious disease and happiness is the best means against cancer ( 45 ). In addition, some researches indicated hypothesis of long life among happy cancers is invalid and some studies reported short life among cancers.

Typology and physical attraction

The first category of constitution, typology and physiognomy refer to Socrates. He divided humans into two distinctive categories: Habitus Apoplecticus, Habitus Phthisicus. New categories also formed based on mentioned category: Lepto-morph = Ectomorph, pyknomorph = Endo-morph and Athlet = mesomorph ( 46 ) ( Fig. 3 ).

Anthropometric typology

The relation between typology and mental and emotion characteristics or psychosomatic correlation involved a part of anthropology researches. For example, people with leptomorph style are sensitive, serious, manager, affective, optimism, intelligence introversion and vulnerable to schizophrenia, hypertension and ulcer. Based on studies assigned a group of signs to each type ( 46 ).

While the typology can form a specific emotion and behaviors, the image of our body can influence on this characteristics. It must be noted that imagination is affected by culture. Several studies investigate the relation between happiness and physical attractiveness and they found that there is a significant positive relation between them ( 46 ).

In social interaction, physical attractiveness leads tomany positive points. For example, other interested in choosing them as a friend, they are successful in choosing a partner, assessed by others positively and so on. Finally, it is important to know that there is a strong bias in assessing attractive people positively. Generally, attractive people perceived happier and successful than others ( 47 ). A Meta-analysis indicated that when people a person assessed as an attractive one, they assessed in comparison with non-attractive people more intelligent, kindly, socially and with more social skills ( 48 ). Bias to attractiveness is traceable in children. For example, teachers assess attractive children as lovely and intelligent students, unconsciously. This subject repeated in experimental condition and acquired same result.

Happiness is a new concept in positive psychology. Although, everyone uses this concept commonly as a clear concept, it has a complex meaning and composed of several factors. In ease, all effective factors divided into two dimensions: endogenic and exogenic. In spite of the influence of exogenic factors on happiness, endogenic factors form the basis of happiness. Biological factors as a part of endogenic factors, in ease, divided into five major areas: genetic factors, brain and neurotransmitters, endocrine glands and hormones, physical health and typology and attractiveness.

Twin studies suggested that genetic factors count for 35 -50 percent of happiness.

Recently studies have also focused on finding related genes in happiness. First, several genes identified in relation with mood and emotion and then among all mentioned genes, two genes suggested in relation with happiness: 5-HTTLPR and MAOA. We hope to clarify the genetic base of happiness in the future.

Brain studies have no clear findings about localization of happiness, but some part of brain introduced as emotion control centers: prefrontal cortex, amygdale, hippocampus, anterior cingulated cortex, and insular cortex. Neurotransmitters have no exact explain, but most related neurotransmitters in relation with happiness are as followed: endorphin, dopamine, serotonin, Nor-epinephrine, and melatonin.

Another factor that affected happiness in general is hormones and glands. Studies suggested that some released hormones (Cortisol, Adrenaline, Oxitocin) have a fundamental role in happiness and mood regulation.

Physical health and attractiveness also influence on happiness and they seem to be significant factor in comprising happiness

Finally, it can be said that genetic is all and other factors are additional. Based on special genetic structure, integrating related factors can result in happiness.

What outcome does our spiritual well-being have on our lives? In this interview, Glen Milstein shares how we can use spirituality and religion to benefit our lives individually and relationally.

Glen Milstein is an associate professor in Psychology at The City College of The City University of New York. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University with training at the Bellevue Hospital Center and an NIMH post-doctoral fellowship at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The foundation of Milstein's work with his colleagues is the lifespan development of beliefs: Since humans are born without a word or a prayer, Glen is interested in how the language(s) of religion(s) becomes us through our families, friends, partners, and communities.

In 2019, he guest-edited a section on Religion and Spirituality in the Context of Disaster for the journal, Psychological Trauma : Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy . In 2020, He co-edited an issue on Religion and Health for the Journal of Prevention & Intervention in the Community . He is currently part of a task force within the American Psychological Association that is collaborating on a document to provide religious and spiritual competency practice guidelines for psychologists.

Jamie Aten: How might readers apply what you found to their lives?

Glen Milstein: What we sought to clarify — which was demonstrated by our research — is that spiritual well-being is beneficial for religious persons. In our study, we found it was protective against depressive symptoms, even if one has strong social support. We learned that it is important to take notice of depressive symptoms and to intervene to reduce these symptoms, with both personal and clinical resources, in order to prevent experiencing worsened occupational distress or burnout .

If you have a spiritual wisdom tradition that has been a positive influence, we can recommend that you examine and discern how this may serve as a source of meaning, wellness, and emotional support. This — like any exercise — is worthy of time set aside consistently. For some people, this discernment may lead to strengthening current practices; for others, it may be a reclamation of a previous path, and for others, it could be a journey on a new path.

JA: How can readers use what you found to help others?

GM: Spiritual well-being is a journey, not a destination. The one constant in life is change, which paradoxically can give us more assurance as change shows both that we can work to heal what has been harmed, as well as strengthen what has been diminished.

We found evidence for this in the data from the ministers. For these clergy, 15 percent had a robust increase in their spiritual well-being (SWB) in ministry across one year and 17 percent in their personal SWB. Also, a different 16 percent had a decrease in their SWB in ministry across one year and 15 percent in their personal SWB.

That spiritual well-being varies, is an idea that might create a sense of personal stigma or disappointment in clergy and other religious persons. Therefore, clergy may benefit from recognizing the need to cultivate spiritual well-being across their lifespan. Psychologists can be among those who encourage persons to improve their spiritual well-being and then assess if this results in the positive outcomes suggested by our research.

JA: What are you currently working on that you might like to share?

GM: Our next project with the Clergy Health Initiative will be another examination of a core psychological question: How does one’s early religious upbringing influence one’s adult functioning?

We know that 90 percent of Catholic priests grew up Catholic. What percentage of Methodist ministers grew up Methodist? How does this upbringing appear to predict their occupational distress, ministry satisfaction, and spiritual well-being?

Because of the sustained work of CHI, we will be able to study 10 years of data to measure outcomes. Our initial hypothesis is that those ministers who grew up Methodist will be functioning better. An alternative hypothesis is that by choosing their spiritual path, those not raised Methodist will function better. It is — in the moment — invigorating not to know.

I am also currently preparing for my sabbatical, which will begin in Autumn 2021. I have accepted an invitation to be a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Divinity of Cambridge University. While there, I will have the opportunity to dialogue with colleagues as I research and write some of the integrative work I developed over the last 30 years. The working title of this sabbatical project is, “Utility of the Ineffable: Darwin, Religion, and The General Good."

I also plan to work with the Cambridge Interfaith Programme to offer COPE dialogues for collaboration between clergy and mental health care providers. I will direct my work to learn from human religious experiences in order to find more cogent and empathic ways to engage those people with lived experiences of mental and emotional distress whose strengths are sustained or challenged by their faith(s).

How hope can keep you happier and healthier, hope is more than just positive thinking..

Hope can erode when we perceive threats to our way of life, and these days, plenty are out there. As we age , we may struggle with a tragic loss or chronic disease. As we watch the news, we see our political system polarized , hopelessly locked in chaos. The coronavirus spreads wider daily ; U.S. markets signaled a lack of hope with a Dow Jones free fall. Losing hope sometimes leads to suicide .

When there is no hope—when people cannot picture a desired end to their struggles—they lose the motivation to endure. As professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University, I’ve studied positive psychology, forgiveness, wellness and the science of hope for more than 40 years. My website offers free resources and tools to help its readers live a more hopeful life.

What is hope?

First, hope is not Pollyannaish optimism— the assumption that a positive outcome is inevitable. Instead, hope is a motivation to persevere toward a goal or end state, even if we’re skeptical that a positive outcome is likely. Psychologists tell us hope involves activity, a can-do attitude and a belief that we have a pathway to our desired outcome. Hope is the willpower to change and the way-power to bring about that change.

With teens and with young or middle-aged adults, hope is a bit easier. But for older adults, it’s a bit harder. Aging often means running up against obstacles that appear unyielding—like recurring health or financial or family issues that just don’t seem to go away. Hope for older adults has to be “sticky,” persevering, a “ mature hope .”

How to build hope

Now the good news: this study , from Harvard’s “ Human Flourishing Program ,” recently published. Researchers examined the impact of hope on nearly 13,000 people with an average age of 66. They found those with more hope throughout their lives had better physical health, better health behaviors, better social support and a longer life. Hope also led to fewer chronic health problems, less depression, less anxiety and a lower risk of cancer.

So if maintaining hope in the long run is so good for us, how do we increase it? Or build hope if it’s MIA? Here are my four suggestions:

Attend a motivational speech —or watch, read or listen to one online, through YouTube, a blog or podcast. That increases hope, although usually the fix is short-lived. How can you build longer-term hope?

Engage with a religious or spiritual community. This has worked for millennia. Amidst a community of like believers, people have drawn strength, found peace and experienced the elevation of the human spirit, just by knowing there is something or someone much larger than them.

Forgive. Participating in a forgiveness group , or completing a forgiveness do-it-yourself workbook , builds hope, say scientists . It also reduces depression and anxiety, and increases (perhaps this is obvious) your capacity to forgive. That’s true even with long-held grudges. I’ve personally found that successfully forgiving someone provides a sense of both the willpower and way-power to change.

Choose a “hero of hope.” Some have changed history: Nelson Mandela endured 27 years of imprisonment yet persevered to build a new nation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought hope to millions for a decade during the Great Depression. Ronald Reagan brought hope to a world that seemed forever mired in the Cold War. From his fourth State of the Union address: “Tonight, I’ve spoken of great plans and great dreams. They’re dreams we can make come true. Two hundred years of American history should have taught us that nothing is impossible.”

Hope gets you unstuck

Hope changes systems that seem stuck. Katherine Johnson , the black mathematician whose critical role in the early days of NASA and the space race was featured in the movie “Hidden Figures,” recently died at age 101. The movie (and the book on which it was based) brought to light her persistence against a system that seemed forever stuck. Bryan Stevenson, who directs the Equal Justice Initiative , and the subject of the movie “Just Mercy,” has successfully fought to help those wrongly convicted or incompetently defended to get off death row.

Stevenson laments that he could not help everyone who needed it; he concluded that he lived in a broken system, and that, in fact, he too was a broken man. Yet he constantly reminded himself of what he had told everyone he tried to help: “Each of us,” he said, “is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done.” Hope changes all of us. By regaining his hope, Bryan Stevenson’s example inspires us.

Regardless of how hard we try, we cannot eliminate threats to hope. Bad stuff happens. But there are the endpoints of persistent hope: We become healthier and our relationships are happier. We can bring about that hope by buoying our willpower, bolstering our persistence, finding pathways to our goals and dreams, and looking for heroes of hope. And just perhaps, one day, we too can be such a hero.

It is commonly said that “A healthy man is a wealthy one”. Regular exercise helps us stay fit and also keeps our mind alert. Good health ensures an agile and active mind. Poor physical health can have a negative impact on an individual’s psychological well-being.

Recent studies have shown that the stress of modern life is causing various medical conditions, especially heart and neurological problems. Good health helps us maintain a positive attitude towards work and life in general.

Despite facing difficulties and obstacles, life is meant to be positive and joyful. To enjoy the beauty of life, we need energy and enthusiasm, which comes from having a healthy body capable of facing life’s challenges.

The foundation for good health is laid in childhood. It depends on the mother’s health and nutrition, as well as the hygiene of the surrounding environment. These are the two fundamental requirements for a healthy mother and baby. Many children suffer from dreadful illnesses such as polio, diphtheria, and typhoid. Therefore, preventing such diseases is crucial for children’s well-being.

Parents love their children and see them as their best hope. They dream of having healthy, intelligent kids and take responsibility for their physical and mental growth. However, it’s not just the parents’ responsibility to ensure their well-being as children are the future of the country and everyone’s hope.

A child’s development determines the kind of person they become, and a healthy child becomes a healthy adult. A well-rounded upbringing can produce a resourceful individual who can contribute to society and humanity. It’s perfectly fine for others to lend a helping hand in maintaining the good health and well-being of children.

Various individuals, such as educators, neighbors, friends, athletes, teachers, trainers, media personnel, social workers, doctors, and gymnasts, can inspire children to maintain good health and well-being.

In school, a child can develop physically and mentally. Good health and well-being have always been important, but in this competitive age, they are even more crucial to meet modern demands. Life has become fast-paced and stressful from an early age.

The educational curriculum is extensive, and expectations for students are high. Competitions are becoming increasingly difficult, and students must study hard and sit in the classroom for extended periods of time. Educational institutions should prioritize physical exercise and recreational programs to promote good health and well-being among students. This is the primary way for students to learn effectively and maintain their health.

A good school or educational institution is remembered for its facilities for sports and other activities that provide students with physical exercise and entertainment. After long periods of mental work, students need outdoor activities to refresh their minds and overcome mental fatigue.

Regardless of the career they choose, young individuals with a decent academic record and good health aim to achieve their life goals. Good education, good health, and well-being provide the necessary confidence to face challenges and achieve progress and success.

Further examination reveals that individuals with good health and well-being can perform better in any profession. Both physical and mental health are equally crucial for better performance and results. Therefore, it is essential for everyone to prioritize their health to become a result-oriented individual.

Even an untalented person can succeed in their occupation with good health and well-being. We can observe many physically fit people working on farms, putting in their energy to provide for themselves and their families. This work gives them a sense of mental satisfaction and a good night’s sleep. Additionally, physically and mentally strong individuals can provide better support to society and earn the appreciation of others.

Good health is a crucial requirement for various professions, such as the armed forces, paramilitary, police, and other similar forces. Individuals who are physically and mentally fit can excel in these fields and earn recognition and awards for their outstanding performance and bravery in difficult situations.

In the private sector, where professional skills are prioritized, a strong and healthy appearance is also valued. Good health is essential in every aspect of life and can have lifelong benefits.

A person’s mental state reflects on their physical appearance. Negative thoughts and emotions can lead to disappointment and disease, while positive thoughts and a healthy mind can bring a sparkle to a person’s face. The mind and body are closely connected and can trigger a cycle of reactions if not controlled.

Improving access to healthcare facilities is crucial in areas where people are suffering due to the lack of medical attention. In many rural areas, hospitals run without proper medical staff or supplies, leaving people with multiple diseases or injuries untreated. The poor cannot afford treatment in big cities or private hospitals. However, awareness and regular exercise can also play a significant role in maintaining good health.

People who prioritize their health often join gyms and yoga camps, inspiring others to follow suit and make efforts toward disease prevention and overall well-being. By freeing the mind of negative thoughts and focusing on physical health, a person can avoid most illnesses of psychological origin and achieve overall good health and a better state of mind.

This is why everyone is running in the rat race without thinking about their wellbeing. The compromise towards health becomes a costly affair later. In the cities, people are more affected by mental issues than physical ones. Constant stress and lack of physical activities contribute to the problem.

Proper health comprises many factors. It includes good food, proper routine, good sleeping habits, and eating habits. Apart from these personal traits, many external factors also control your wellbeing. People in the villages stay physically stronger due to freshness in the air, physical activities, and good food. People in the urban areas, on the contrary, prefer eating unhealthy food, lack physical agility, and cannot handle mental stress properly. In the same context, urban settlement has a better lifestyle and healthcare system. Considering all the components, a person needs to give equal importance to the factors and maintain a balance.

The elements of good health are physical and mental fitness. If both are maintained, a person will enjoy a better life. How can we achieve that state? First, we have to find out the factors influencing physical health. We have to learn about the lifestyle diseases that affect our health and check the ways to avoid or manage them. Secondly, we have to eat good food and maintain a healthy diet. We need to ensure a balanced diet and good food habits to provide nutrition to our systems. In this aspect, we also have to find out the harmful foods we generally prefer eating and avoid them. Regular exercise is the third most important part of good health. When we are physically active, our muscles remain functional. We get hurt very less and also recover faster. We can also maintain our body balance better when we are involved in physical activities.

The next phase is mental happiness. What makes us happy? One can be happy watching TV all the time. Sitting on the couch all day long can also make someone happy but is it a healthy choice? This type of lifestyle choice should be immediately avoided. Choosing a sedentary lifestyle is nothing but an invitation to different diseases. The current urban population is suffering from weight-related issues. Being overweight also makes the situation worse. Lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol elevation, cardiovascular diseases, etc develop at a young age.

We also need to make better choices when it comes to mental health. Playing sports with your buddies will help you relax and de-stress. You can also take a walk in the park and enjoy the greenery. Avoid spending more time on the screen and try to develop a hobby that suits you. In this way, you can become happier and stay healthier.

A person also needs to choose better social factors to remain free from social stigmas. Cognitive health and social health are equally important. Adding more stress will not be the solution. Keep exercising physically and mentally to remain fit and enjoy good health and longer life. Make your home stress-free with good habits and keep everyone healthy.

LESSON OVERVIEW

This free ESL lesson plan on happiness has been designed for adults and young adults at an intermediate (B1/B2) to advanced (C1/C2) level and should last around 45 to 60 minutes for one student.

Happiness can mean many things to many different people. For some people, happiness is family. For others, happiness is connected to experiences. Can money make you happy? Probably! What is certainly true is that happiness is strongly associated with good mental health and well-being. In this ESL lesson plan on happiness, students will have the opportunity to discuss and express their opinions on issues such as what makes them happy and what makes them unhappy.

This lesson plan could also be used with your students to debate these issues for the  International Day of Happiness , which takes place in March. For more lesson plans on international days and important holidays, see the  calendar of world days  to plan your classes for these special occasions.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Reading activity Before the English class, send the following article to the students and ask them to read it while making a list of any new vocabulary or phrases they find (explain any the students don’t understand in the class):

The Guardian | “Happiness depends on health and friends, not money, says new study”

The article refers to a study by the London School of Economics that found that happiness was more connected with our mental health than it was with money problems or poverty. At the start of the class, hold a brief discussion about what the students thought about the article. What do they think about the issues raised in the article? Do they agree with what was said? Can they think of any ways they might disagree with the content of the article?.

Video activity To save time in class for the conversation activities, the English teacher can ask the students to watch the video below and answer the listening questions in Section 3 of the lesson plan at home. There are intermediate listening questions and advanced listening questions so teachers can decide which would be more appropriate for their students. Check the answers in the class.

The video for this class is called “Top 10 Happiest Countries in The World” by WatchMojo and looks at what makes some nationalities so happy.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The focus in the class is on conversation in order to help improve students’ fluency and confidence when speaking in English as well as boosting their vocabulary.

This lesson opens with a short discussion about the article the students read before the class. Next, the students can give their opinion on the quote at the beginning of the lesson plan – what they think the quote means and if they agree with it. This is followed by an initial discussion on the topic including what happiness is, what made them happy this week and happy moments in life.

After this, students will learn some vocabulary connected with happiness such as good mood/bad mood , down in the dumps and over the moon . This vocabulary has been chosen to boost the students’ knowledge of less common vocabulary that could be useful for preparing for English exams like IELTS or TOEFL. The vocabulary is accompanied by a cloze activity and a speaking activity to test the students’ comprehension of these words.

If the students didn’t watch the video before the class, they can watch it after the vocabulary section and answer the listening questions. Before checking the answers, ask the students to give a brief summary of the video and what they thought about the content.

Finally, there is a more in-depth conversation about happiness. In this speaking activity, students will talk about issues such as whether rich people are happier than poor people, the happiest and unhappiest nationalities and whether real happiness comes from making others happy.

After the class, students will write about their opinion of happiness. This could be a short paragraph or a longer piece of writing depending on what level the student is at. The writing activity is designed to allow students to practise and improve their grammar with the feedback from their teacher. For students who intend to take an international English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL, there is an alternative essay question to practise their essay-writing skills.
