Advanced Academic Writing

Course description.

N.B. You should participate in this course about 6 months into your PhD project or longer, preferably when you are writing the pilot study.

The course focuses on writing effective, well-structured and coherent academic texts in English. It introduces strategies to improve the overall writing process, such as planning, outlining and becoming aware of disciplinary requirements. Other important course themes include writing effective and varied sentences, using punctuation marks effectively, improving text coherence and working with different techniques to improve the overall style of the text. Because the course participants typically use English as a second language (ESL), the course also pays attention to certain language issues that might arise at the level of vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and grammar. Throughout the course, the participants will work towards laying the foundation of one of the chapters of their dissertation (or an academic article/pilot study) and will write a considerable part of this text. They will receive detailed and extensive feedback on their writing from the course instructor, who will also use the participants’ texts as a basis for the course material.

To be able to complete the course successfully, the participants have to attend all classes. They should also submit at least two writing samples for feedback (1000-1200 words & 2500 words).

Important information about the course

Native speaker of English?

Although this is very much a writing course and most classes focus on different aspects of the writing process, improving style, different writing practices and so on, many participants write in English as a second language, so certain themes or questions that are particularly relevant for non-native speakers of English are also addressed. If English is your native language, then a quick Zoom intake meeting can be scheduled to discuss whether you would like to attend all classes or perhaps only a selection. Please note that the group does usually consist of a mix of native and non-native speakers and that, on the whole, the native speakers typically do attend all/most classes.

Have you started with the writing process?

Because this is a writing course, it is strongly recommend that you join the course once you've actually started with the writing process (chapter, article, pilot study). If you've just started with your PhD project, it might be better to join the course a bit later (this course is offered once in the fall semester and twice in the spring semester). Throughout the course you can submit various writing samples for feedback and participants find the combination of the group sessions and individual feedback particularly valuable.

The course will be taught by Lotte Tavecchio. Lotte holds a PhD in English Linguistics and has a special interest in sentence structure, punctuation, matters of style and contrastive linguistics. She works as a lecturer at Amsterdam University College (AUC) and is the owner of b-eloquent ( www.b-eloquent.nl ).

Writing Centre Workshops

This workshop covers common grammar, vocabulary and punctuation errors in student writing. Using real examples, we will discuss how best to correct such errors in order to ensure that your writing is as clear and explicit as possible. The workshop is interactive, with plenty of exercises and opportunities to ask questions.

This interactive workshop covers techniques for ensuring clarity, readability and conciseness in academic writing. Using examples from student writing, we will discuss how to avoid wordiness and unnecessary repetition in order to convey information as clearly as possible. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice and ask questions.

The focus of this interactive workshop is how to integrate outside sources into your own writing smoothly. After a short orientation on finding and evaluating sources and using citation systems, we discuss the difference between quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. We will go into further depth on each of these techniques, and there will be time for practice. Finally, we discuss (accidental) plagiarism and how to avoid it.

Ensuring your text is clear, readable and concise depends in large part on how you structure it. In this interactive workshop we will discuss how to effectively structure your paper as a whole, how to build up a paragraph, and how to structure your sentences in order to control the flow of information. There will be time for practice and questions.

Workshops animated by Marie Beauchamps , Amsterdam-based poet, creative entrepreneur, academic, and policy officer at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This series of workshops makes space to explore a diverse and creative pallet of writing styles in academic writing practices.

The choices we make when we write have profound effects on the reality that we observe. Giving an account of our observations requires a multitude of styles of writing for achieving the greatest accuracy. Finding the most accurate style of writing for a particular purpose sometimes implies letting go of a seemingly neutral style of writing, instead embracing a plurality of voices, such as staging a dialogue or exploring a more poetic style.

These workshops aim to explore what happens when we loosen up the frame of our habitual academic writing practice, inviting multi-layered stories to bubble up and become part of the conversation unfolding on the page. In these interactive workshops, I will lead you through a series of hands-on exercises to make you experience creative writing within your academic practice.

Introductory workshop: 2 x 3,5 hours

In this introductory workshop spread over two sessions, we practice writing scenes, working with sensory details , defining the main characters driving the story of our work, and staging conversations between them. All sessions are designed around sample texts, and include on-the-spot writing exercises. There will be time for peer-review, and we will take time to reflect on what it takes to make space for creativity within our academic work.

Consolidation session on storytelling: 1 x 3,5 hours

In this consolidation session, we work with the full narrative of our text and research. We study sample texts to see how writers convey their story, and discuss foundational storytelling tools to design our own text. Following on-the-spot writing exercises, we practice finding the stories driving our text and research; pausing on where it started, its importance, and the transformation it generates.

Modular follow up workshop series

Each session of 3,5 hours is designed around sample texts; it always includes time for on-the-spot writing exercises and for a peer review session.

Narrators : In this session, we play with narrators, writing and re-writing portions of our text using different kinds of narrators, exploring how the choice of narrator affects what we observe and say.

Tone : In this session, we play with tones, experimenting first with lyrical language, then with a purely matter of fact tone, erasing all metaphors and figurative traces, taking time to discuss the effects of tone on the text and the analysis.

Mood : In this session, we practice ways of creating an atmosphere by carefully choosing words to denote the quality of time, space, and affect of our text.

Individual consultation:

In individual conversations, I research what is the source of blockages that stand in the way, segmenting the task into graspable elements, suggesting hands-on exercises to unlock the writer’s creativity, with the aim to get back into a flow.

Workshop tailored to a research group:

I also offer workshops tailored to the specific needs of a research group. Together, we can research what kind of creative space is most needed, and which tools of creative writing would help best.

Do you enjoy writing and would you like to be able to write freely and creatively in English? Would you like to develop your creative writing style, or are you suffering from writer's block? Then English Creative Writing is the right course for you. During this course you will learn more about the creative writing process and how to engage in it, using various examples and assignments.

During the course each student writes a short story and a series of poems.

Skills you will have developed by the end of this course include being able to write poems and short stories, plus you will have found your own voice and will be able to use different writing styles.

Who is it for?

The English Creative Writing course is suitable for students with an advanced knowledge of English who are looking to develop their own writing style. Would you like to write travel stories or tales from your family? Or do you work as a content creator, blogger, marketing specialist or in another creative career that involves writing? Then this course is for you!

What will you learn?

How do I write a good story? During this course we will introduce an effective writing strategy to you and give you tips and tricks that lead to a successful creative text. You will learn how to write gripping articles and what makes a readable text. Aspects of this include sentence length and cohesion: the relationship between ideas within a sentence and between different sentences. For writing poetry and verse, the focus is on imagery, atmosphere, originality and rhyme. Use of vocabulary and its effect on the reader are also covered.

Who am I as a writer? Various general aspects are addressed, such as starting to write and finding your voice as a writer. Where do I find inspiration? What inspires you? How do you look at everyday objects or events? How do I incorporate personal experiences in my story?

Who is the narrator? How can I connect ideas in order to develop characters and build a story line? You will discuss the effect of direct and indirect speech and how to get your characters to express their thoughts.

What appeals to the reader? You will also be given advice on how to captivate the reader, how to catch and keep their attention. And just who is the reader anyway?

You will be given practical tips, like keeping a diary, and how to gather material. You will also be asked to keep a reading list. And, last but not least, issues such as editing, correction and proofreading will be covered.

Unleash Your Creativity: over 30 English-Taught Courses and Workshops in Amsterdam

We are so often caught up in the daily routine that we forget to think about developing our playful, creative side. We remember about that only when life hits us with a burnout or quarter/middle age crisis and only then (maybe) we do something about it. But it shouldn’t be that way.

I believe that experimenting with our creativity should be something we do regularly, because it has so many benefits!

It can be something you always wanted to try but life stood in your way, or you might discover that the only way to relax is by doing something creative. Unleashing your creativity can help when you feel stuck in any area of your life, by giving your brain a break from the repetitive thoughts and helping it find new solutions.

Amsterdam is a place that brings out the creative side in people; I’ve seen it many times in myself and others around me. But what do you if you don’t speak Dutch yet, or not enough? Fear not, because Amsterdam, being the shiny expat bubble that it is, has the solution: a good selection of courses taught in English .

NOTE: this article was updated in February 2023

CREATIVE WRITING

International Writers’ Collective : four levels of creative writing (8 weeks per module), personal coaching and various workshops organised throughout the year. They also organise periodical write-together meetings (open for everyone, student or not) and meetings with writers. This is the place where I re-discovered my taste for writing fiction; I did three modules and I hope one day I’ll be able to go back and continue. The method they use is the right one for me and I enjoy very much the community created around this school. There is also a workshop in the Hague and an online class which can be followed from anywhere.
Amsterdam Writing Workshops : as the name says, they have a few creative writing workshops from September to June. They also try to create a community to support writers in their endeavours and a safe place for receiving writing feedback.
Amsterdam Writers: an 8 weeks workshop cycle for both advanced and beginners. They claim that their workshops and seminars “keep writers fit, healthy and strong through invigorating and stimulating exercises”.
CREA : offers two levels for creative writing, memoir writing and more. There’s a tricky thing about CREA — you have to wait until their students enrol and only then you know if there are any spaces left and if you can apply.

Atelier Molenpad : Intuitive Painting Center for adults, all levels welcome. The intuitive painting classes aim to help you tap into your subconscious mind with art, and help you when you’re stuck, generating new ideas and feelings. The programme can be bought in one package, each session has a theme, and the content has a progressive flow. Atelier Molenpad also organises art retreats.
Ateliers Westerdok: develop your creative skills and knowledge about art (drawing and painting). They had to close during the pandemic, but looks like they are coming back soon. The main language is Dutch but English speakers are accepted and the teachers will give explanations is English too.
Vondelpark Atelier : a small international art school. The courses start every two months and there are also workshops organised upon request. You can choose from painting, drawing and photography courses, as well as workshops for collage, illustration, watercolours.
MK24 : offers a variety of courses, from painting and sculpting to ceramics and multimedia. The language is mainly Dutch but some classes accept English speaking students as well (you’ll have to check with them). You pay by module or the whole year. This is where I took a Model Painting class this year, and I loved the experience!
Impression Studio : this is a small studio run by Charissa van de Kerkhoff who teaches all the classes. All levels, English and Dutch.
CREA Amsterdam has a wide variety of classes, some of them being offered in English as well.
Vincent van Oss : two courses and a few workshops. Private lessons are a possibility too, and the particularity of this studio is the Male Nude course, every Thursday.
Station West INT : they have a couple of drawing workshops taught in English, that look very cool. I particularly love the Visual Journalling one.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND AUDIOVISUAL

SAE Institute : OK, this is more than “feeding a hobby” kind of thing. If you want to go very serious about it, you can enrol to one of the study programmes at SAE, which offers a comprehensive course portfolio in creative media fields (audio, film, animation, games development, music business, and web). They organise open-days from time to time, when you can get a taste of what the institute has to offer.
The FOTOfactory : this International Institute of Photography is the most prestigious private educational Institute in the Netherlands, with students from all over the world. They have a three years programme but also summer courses and workshops.
Vondelpark Atelier : crash course, basic and advanced photography courses plus a few workshops like street photography, photoshop. There’s also an animation course and film making workshops.
Amsterdam Photo Club : there’s a big community created around this club, and, apart from the usual courses and workshops, you can register for photowalks and other events such as portfolio reviews.
Megan Alter : basic and advanced courses, workshops on street or natural light photography and even private photo lessons.
Photography Courses Amsterdam : basic, intermediate and advanced courses, also private lessons.
Foam : the Photography Museum periodically organises workshops and some of them are in English.

ACTING AND IMPROV

The Mulholland Acting and Film Academy : offers short and long-term classes, combining European and American techniques (Strasberg and Meisner, Scene study etc). Beginner and advanced acting programs are available.
Theodora Voutsa : acting classes based on the Los Angeles method — a combination of acting and personal development techniques. There are a few levels, from beginner to “transformational masterclass”. Theodora created also a few online courses, like “How to be a Successful Storyteller” and “Habits”.
Boom Chicago Academy – the training branch of the well known Boom Chicago venue offers long-form improvisation classes (six levels), pitch trainings, presentation courses, and InterActing, a program for young people with autism. For business groups they offer creativity worksops and team building activities.
Easy Laugh : this international improvised comedy group offers improvisation and stand-up comedy classes, as well as occasional various workshops.
Act Attack – a new English speaking theatre group providing acting classes for everyone interested. You will be part of a happy and dynamic multicultural club, developing your skills and having fun. You won’t receive a professional acting diploma at the end, but you’ll get to perform in their shows.
Art Ceramics Studio : all levels ceramics courses, Raku and mold making, as well as workshops like “Pottery painting”. A nice feature is that you can join the course at any time, as long as there are still places available.
Studio Pansa : is an open access clay and ceramics workspace, providing all the necessary facilities for their members to work freely. If you already know your ceramics, you can get a membership, but if you’re a beginner, try one of their courses first.
Patty Schilder : sculptural ceramic classes for all levels. The course can be joined at any time. Patty also offers a few interesting workshops, like “Raku firing”, “Ceramics and wine tasting” or “Totem team building”.
Pansy : ceramic painting workshops in their cosy shop. You can choose from from a selection of cups, vases, trinket boxes and plates and you’ll be guided on how to transform the object into a pretty one.

OTHER

Blog coaching with yours truly. You can book one-on-one coaching sessions with me, and I’ll guide you through the process. I can help you gain clarity, create a strategy for success (whatever that success means to you), give you tips and tricks I learned in 12+ years of blogging. Oh Pretty Paper : if you’d like to learn how to make pretty letters using a pointed pen and ink, join one of the modern calligraphy workshops.
De Steek : learn how to make your own clothes with sewing lessons (for all levels). Apart from the regular courses, the list of workshops is quite appealing: “Natural Dyeing”, “Lingerie Workshop”, “Upcycled Dress” — to name a few. They also have activities for kids.
Alexander Gershberg’s vegan Sundays : for those interested in learning how to cook easy and healthy vegan meals.
Natural DIY skin care workshop.
Mediamatic has different workshops all the time, from creating fragrance to making soap and growing your own funghi.

Creative Writing in Arnhem is a higher vocational course for those who want to become writers. It is the first such course on which you get to develop into a fully-fledged writer and creator, with the help of renowned writers, poets and professionals from the literary world. The emphasis on the course is on written text, but you can also choose to concentrate on other forms of presentation, such as zines, audio or performance. There is also a strong focus on creative research, so that you can identify where your talents, ambitions and opportunities lie.

The course turns ambitious new writers and storytellers into all-round story creators. Creative Writing

Admission requirements, description.

Creative writing encompasses forms of writing outside of professional, journalistic, academic, or technical writing. This course introduces students to the theory and practice of creative writing, with an emphasis on crafting prose. Students learn about the different tools that writers of fiction and creative nonfiction (also known as narrative nonfiction) employ to make these forms successful in a myriad of ways. Through reading, discussion, and practice, the class will explore the ways in which writers creatively manipulate structure and language. They’ll discuss how literary devices are employed to give their writing a unique tone and style.

Each week, the class will read and discuss examples of creative texts to analyze which stylistic elements make the pieces successful. Then, students will apply what they learn to their own writing through weekly writing exercises, and strengthen the work through subsequent feedback in workshop, culminating in one fully-formed piece of writing at the end of the course.

Course Objectives

By the end of the term, students:

Will have an understanding of the literary devices used in the craft of writing in fiction and narrative nonfiction prose.

Will have learned to read, write, and respond to their peers in a workshop setting.

Will have produced one polished piece of writing as well as various shorter writing assignments.

Will have the tools to continue a writing practice.

Mode of instruction

Class sessions will consist of lectures, discussion of the reading material, in-class writing exercises, and workshops in which class members will peer review each other’s work. These activities may be supplemented by question and answer sessions with visiting authors and/or multimedia material.

As always, students are expected to come to class prepared, having read the weekly reading material and their peers’ writing when applicable, for response.

Assessment Method

Students will be assessed on their completion of writing assignments, incorporation of feedback in revision, peer review/workshop responses, responses to reading material, a final portfolio, and participation in the academic process, as follows:

The Wisconsin Book Festival hosted the 2023-24 Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellows Wednesday evening, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Creative Writing.

The Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellows are a group of writers who are provided resources and community while working on their first book of poetry and fiction, according to the UW Creative Writing website . Not only is UW’s environment intended to improve the fellows’ writing skills, but it also provides them opportunities to develop as instructors, the website says.

UW creative writing professor Amy Quan Barry introduced the presenters, touching on the institute’s history — beginning with its founding in 1986 — and how it has developed numerous authors of acclaim.

The 2023-24 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow Elijah Bean presented first, reading from several poems, many of which concern ideas of home and reflection on the past. Bean’s poems are linked to memories such as a cramped living room, lawnmowers, dogs and writing alongside someone close to death and aware of their own mortality.

Following Bean was 2023-24 Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow Gothataone Moeng, who read an excerpt from the middle of the first chapter of her upcoming novel. Moeng’s work centered deeply around the meaning of human conversation and explored themes such as why people are drawn to certain others, becoming less ignorant of the world and the idea of possessing a great gift.

The 2023-24 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow Sadia Hassan presented next, with works heavily focused on the utilization of art as advocacy, and how poems can be written to represent one’s beliefs. The poems Hassan read involved themes such as dreaming, speaking out amongst a crowd and how to best confront the self-obsession that so heavily impacts American society.

Next was Ada Zhang, the 2023-24 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow, who read from a larger project in progress. Zhang’s work, which revolved around the life of a Chinese congregation moving into Texas and its subsequent role as a safe haven for immigrants, concerned the themes of religion, familial history and matching one’s identity with their family.

Lastly, 2023-24 Hoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow in Poetry Mandy Moe Pwint Tu read from two poems and an excerpt from her novel’s prologue. All three concerned the international student experience, from feeling like an outsider to managing the familial struggle across oceans.

All five of the Creative Writing Fellows showcased their unique styles of writing that earned their positions and will continue to develop their work in Wisconsin and beyond.

Chang proud to be part of Iowa’s writing legacy

Iowa Writers’ Workshop Director Lan Samantha Chang will have a lot to celebrate next month.

Chang, who also is a Writers’ Workshop alumna, is one of eight individuals who received an Arts and Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an achievement that will be celebrated at a ceremony in New York City in late May. But before the ceremony, she will head to New Hampshire to begin a residency as one of the most recent MacDowell Fellows.

“I’m really proud to be part of the Workshop,” she says. “I’m proud to be among the many Workshop graduates who have been honored this year by so many institutions.”

In addition to Chang, two Writers’ Workshop alumnae, Michelle Huneven and Elizabeth McCracken, also received Arts and Letters Awards. Awardees are given $10,000 to honor and encourage their creative work.

“For me, it’s a tremendous honor to be granted one of those prizes, because it’s a sign of confidence from the American writing establishment,” Chang says. “I spend a lot of my job trying to encourage people’s creative work, and there’s something kind of wonderful being on the receiving end of encouragement at this point. I feel lucky at this time in my life to have that encouragement to produce more work.”

Chang also is among the 155 artists—including writers, composers, architects, and filmmakers—selected from a pool of 2,417 applications for the spring-summer 2024 fellowship at MacDowell, one of the nation’s leading contemporary arts organizations. Fellows will have residencies at the MacDowell campus in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where they will have time and space to create in more than 30 artists’ studios.

“Because my job at Iowa is time-consuming and absorbing, it has been essential for me to go to residencies in order to get writing done,” Chang says. “I can say I’ve always done a lot of strong work at MacDowell. They make it possible for people to focus in a way that is unusual, even for a residency. For example, in the studios, Wi-Fi is not available. The story everyone says is, ‘Being there for a month, you get six months’ worth of work done.’ So, I’m extremely grateful to MacDowell. I’ll be starting something brand new, which is exciting.”

Chang’s previous work includes a collection of short stories, Hunger , and three novels: Inheritance ; All Is Forgotten, Nothing is Lost ; and The Family Chao . She has received creative writing fellowships from Stanford University, Princeton University, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Chang has directed the Iowa Writers’ Workshop since January 2006, and says she came to Iowa because the workshop changed her life.

“I felt that I could be a part of it in a meaningful way,” Chang says. “I’ve been very lucky that my job has been at a place that means a lot to me. I think it’s very rare and lucky when a person can spend so much of their adult life doing work that they find meaningful.”

Chang also finds inspiration in the students who come to Iowa for the workshop, which is known worldwide as the premier program of its kind.

“They are the best students in the world,” she says. “To have such a high concentration of gifted emerging writers is a very rare thing. I don’t know of anywhere else where it exists, the size and talent of the Workshop student body.”

Chang says she also thinks the university and Iowa City communities are unique in the value placed on writing.

“This is one of the few places in the country where writing is at the center of the conversation,” she says. “There’s something affirming to be able to walk into a restaurant and be in a room with poets and essayists and novelists, all those people living the lives of writers.”
