Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 22, 2016 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 8

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

In today’s lesson, we are going to look at a question from IELTS speaking part 2 that asks you to describe a sportsperson . I will help you analyze the question, make notes, give some useful language, and then I will give you a helpful sample answer.

Note: I have updated this post since it was originally written to include a video lesson. You can find that at the bottom of this page.

Cue Card: Describe a Sportsperson

Here’s a common question from IELTS Speaking Part 2:

Describe a sportsperson you admire. You should say: who the person is what sport he or she does when did you first hear about this person and why you admire him or her.

Hopefully, everyone reading this is at least familiar with some famous sports stars. You don’t need to be a fanatic to answer this question well… but it might help! You just need to be able to think of a person, describe what he or she does, when and where you first encountered this person, and give some reasons why you admire them.

describe a sportsperson: american football

As always, you should be writing some short notes in preparation, rather than any sentences. Remember that you really don’t have enough time to write more than a few words.

Note down any vocabulary that comes to mind and which you think will help. But mostly write down words that will help you to structure your speech – this makes your words sound more natural.

See our article on how to improve your IELTS speaking .

Here are my notes:

describe a sportsperson - Leo Messi

Leo Messi Argentina-> Barcelona Disability Awards 10 years ago Perseverance

These are obviously very basic, but by looking at them I can speak confidently without missing any of the points from the cue card. There are two useful words of vocabulary – disability and perseverance . These words, if properly used, sound impressive and add meaningfully to the speaking task. They are examples of “less common vocabulary” and can help improve your score.

It is helpful to have an idea about this cue card in your head before the exam. Certain topics often appear in IELTS speaking part 2 and you should be quite familiar with them before you sit the IELTS. Here are some guides to common topics:

Sample answer

I have highlighted some useful constructions for describing a famous person. These are useful for describing Leo Messi but of course can be adapted to other people. Some are quite basic – like “some would say” – while others are more complex, such as “his inspiring story of perseverance.”

Remember: you should never memorize answers for IELTS, but it is helpful to remember collocations – that means groups of words that are commonly used together.

So here is my answer to the cue card above:

My favourite sports person is Leo Messi. He’s a famous football player, and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Argentina, where he was born, but moved to Barcelona, in Spain, when he was a teenager. He had a disability, for which the Spanish team agreed to pay his medical bills. Despite his health problems, Messi developed into a modern legend . He has won numerous trophies over the course of his career , including five “world footballer of the year” awards – which is a world record. I remember first hearing about him about ten years ago, when he was first making headlines .  His life story caught my attention just as much as his incredible skills. I admire him because of his triumph over adversity . I think that his inspiring story of perseverance is a lesson for us all.

The phrases “making headlines” and “modern legend” are really useful for talking about famous people. You can incorporate these into your IELTS speaking part 2 answer like this.

Lebron James is a modern legend in the field of basketball. He has been making headlines for more than a decade.

More Sports Vocabulary

Sports is a common IELTS topic and it may occur in other parts of the exam, so make sure you know some basic vocabulary. If there is a sport that you really care about, learn some of the words that are commonly used to describe it. Here is a great collection of sports words to study.

One of the tricky things about sports in English is that there are some very subtle differences in language from sport to sport and between cultures. Here are some examples:

Basketball is played on a basketball court . Football is played on a football pitch . Baseball is played on a baseball field .

And so on. Knowing these slight differences can really help elevate your IELTS speaking score. Also, keep in mind that you are not describing a sport. Instead, you have been asked to describe a sportsperson. This means that you should be good with vocabulary for describing people .

YouTube Video

I have converted this lesson into a video format. If you want to hear me giving my sample answer in an audio recording, you can watch this video. You might find it useful to repeat my sentences to improve your pronunciation .

Ok, folks. That’s all for today’s lesson. I hope you are now able to describe a sportsperson. You can put your own ideas into the comment section below and I will give you some feedback.

Hi Adel. I have corrected this for you:

I would like to talk about Mohammed Shalah, who is one of the most famous football players and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Egypt, where he was born, but moved to a lot of sports clubs around Europe until he transferred to Liverpool football club in England. There are several reasons why I admire him but for me, the most important factor is that I’m big fan of his play and performance. I have seen almost all of his matches with Liverpool and consider him to one of the world’s best players. Also, he is a source of motivation and inspiration after he was been awarded BBC prize for the best football player in England. He was not only but also candidate from the French football journal to win the African Prize for the best football player in Africa but also… [I don’t know what you want to say here]. In the future, if I had a chance to meet him, I would definitely ask him for his autograph, take photos with him, and post them on my Facebook wall. It would be a golden opportunity for me to talk with him, learn from him, and be inspired by this man.

IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

Describe a sportsperson/athlete that you admire You should say:

  • Who is the person?
  • What is his/her achievement
  • Why do you admire him?

Table of Contents

Being a sports enthusiast, I admire many sportspeople. However, one of them is exceptional, and hence, he is worth mentioning.

He is none other than the most outstanding batsman India has ever produced, Virat Kohli. His achievements are outstanding, and the first and foremost achievement is that under his captaincy, India won a test series in Australia for the first time.

India has played in Australia for 70 years but has never won a test series. When he became the captain, Virat Kohli worked with determination, dedication, and discipline to nurture the talent of his team players so that they would do remarkably well in Australia.

And the primary reason for admiring him is that Virat Kohli has this uncanny knack for thinking beyond the conventional domain. Most cricketers work on their skills, like batting or bowling; however, Virat Kohli has a different approach.

He works more on his fitness because he believes that having a fit body allows you to shine better in your cricketing career and this attitude of his works like a charm.

Now, many youngsters seek flashes of inspiration from him to lead their lives toward an impressive growth  trajectory , and by following Virat Kohli’s attitude, they can also climb the ladder to success. I admire him because he is a unique combination of determination, dedication, and discipline; a sportsman like him is a nation’s treasure.

Being a sports fanatic, I admire many sports persons. One of them is exceptional, and hence, he is worth mentioning. The person is the erstwhile captain of the Indian cricket team, and his name is Mr. Mehenders Singh Dhoni.

He has numerous achievements. The first and foremost is India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007. And after that, he won another World Cup in 2011. Besides that, under his charismatic leadership, India won the Champions Trophy in 2015.

I admire him for many reasons. First and foremost, he is one person who consistently exhibits immense confidence. There are such situations where the match could go to any side. But despite that, he always remains calm, and even the ordinary cricketers perform exceptionally well under his leadership. And he never complains that he doesn’t have the right kind of players. So, whatever team members he has, he always tries to bring the best out of them.

Apart from this, he always thinks beyond the conventional domain. He is a person who remains away from smartphones, media, and parties. He spends a simple life. These days, he is engaged in farming. So, he is setting a good precedent for people that he should care for our environment.

For a brief period, he worked in the Indian territorial army. He stayed with soldiers in inclement weather conditions. So, these are the things that make him unique. And he inspires others. That’s why most people seek flashes of inspiration from him to excel in their careers.

Although I admire many sportspersons, one of them is exceptional, and he is worth discussing. He is the current all-rounder player of the Indian cricket team, and his name is Ravinder Jadeja. His achievements are substantial. In cricket, we usually see good batters; some people are good at bowling, and some are good at fielding.

However, Ravindra Jadeja is a unique combination. He bats well in the middle order, where the task becomes difficult . Apart from this, he is a perfect left-arm spinner who tends to take a lot of wickets. Moreover, he is an agile fielder. He is good at throwing the ball. And due to this, there is terror among opposition batters against him.

And I admire him because he had a humble beginning; he was from a small family. And despite not being rich, he worked hard and led his career towards impressive growth.

Now he is around 35 years old, but still, the kind of effort set puts him. It looks like him. He is 18-20 years old, and other players also seek flashes of inspiration from him.

There is no denying this conviction that sports players are vital in our lives, and whenever we play sports at that time, it acts as a stress buster for us. There is one person I like, and his name is Cristiano Ronaldo, and he is a football player.

I admire him because he helps people in numerous ways, and in COVID-19, he organized many campaigns. He changed his 5-star hotel to a hospital to help others, which I like. He is a prominent businessman, and there are some companies from which he earns money. I also like some brands of his, and I want to wear those clothes.

Whenever I talk about Cristiano Ronaldo, my other friends also appreciate me, and I want to play football; most of the time, I play football with my friends and tell them I want to become Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most of my relatives also give me compliments on this topic, and sometimes, whenever I watch his videos on that time, I get immense inspiration. His videos inspire others and motivate them to do their best in their upcoming lives. So that’s the person that I like, and I want to become Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are many sportspeople whom I admire. But the most likely person is Usain Bolt. He was born in Jamaica in the mid-1980s. He belongs to a low-income family. But he is a very hard-working person. He started his journey from football. After that, his coach told him that he could go for athletics. So he started practising athletics for 100 to 200 meters. He is one of the best sportsmen in the world. He has a record of 100 meters in 9.68 seconds. He has won 10 times the Olympic champion for his country. He has won many prizes at the international level. He is very famous for his singing and cool nature. He inspires me to keep my diet plan. His hard work always pushes me to work hard. Because I have always wanted to be like him, he also serves poor people in an NGO, Which helps them to develop their skills. In every country, many people are very popular. But Usain Bolt is one of the most popular people in the world. I always follow him.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe a sportsperson/athlete that you admire  ”.

1. Do teenagers like exercising in your country?

In my country, teenagers’ tendency to exercise has declined significantly because most remain engaged in gadgets and devices. Moreover, social media has made roads in their lives because they spend a boatload of time watching reels and short videos.

2. Do you think physical education is necessary?

Physical education is necessary because making money is secondary to our physical well-being. The first important asset we must have is our physical health, and getting an education about how to keep ourselves physically fit, what kind of food to eat, what kind of exercises to do, and what kind of exercises to avoid is a prudent idea. If we know these domains, then our physical health improves considerably.

3. How do you think physical education classes affect children’s development?

These classes lead to a paradigm shift in children’s thinking because their concepts become clear regarding how they can be fit. They come to know what they need to keep and what they need to avoid, which provides fruitful benefits both in the short and long term.

4. What kind of exercise do Indian people like to do?

Conventional physical exercises like yoga and going for a walk are popular among Indians. Most people refrain from exercising in a gym because they think that weight training can jeopardize the structure of their bones; due to this, they refrain from indulging in it.

He has won multiple trophies and awards for his unbelievable performance in the cricket.

Virat is really great inspiration for numerous cricket lovers in all over world. Well Virat doesn’t seem standoffish like some famous people and I guess this is why people love him. Although I have never seen him in the flesh but it’s been a lifelong dream to see him once in my life. His dedication for the sports and passion for cricket is incredibly admirable.

And explain why you admire them

describe a sports star/athlete that you admire

I first learned about him when I was just a kid, watching soccer with my dad at home. I remember he would always tell me how good Messi was and that one day I would regret not appreciating the unique skills and talent that Messi had.

Since then, I have watched countless matches featuring Messi and his old team, Barcelona. He’s incredibly gifted and has achieved a level of success that is almost unbelievable. He has scored more goals than any other player in La Liga history, and is the only player to win five Ballon d’Or awards.

Apart from his impressive list of achievements, there are a few other reasons why I admire this incredible footballer. He’s also incredibly down to earth  and has always remained true to himself. His determination and hardwork on the field is unwavering and it is truly inspiring to watch him show up day after day and give his all.

To sum it up, Lionel Messi is quite simply an iconic sports person and someone that I truly admire. He has achieved amazing things in the world of football, and his commitment and attitude is something that I will always look up to.

Thank you.”

The idiom to idolise means to admire someone or something greatly and feel great devotion to them. Example: My son idolises Lebron James and regularly watches his games.

The idiom “the GOAT” stands for “the Greatest of All Time” and is typically used in sports for an athlete or a team who has achieved an unprecedented level of success and longevity in a certain sport. Example: Many consider Michael Jordan to be the GOAT of basketball.

Down to earth is an idiom that means practical, realistic, and unpretentious. For example, “He’s very down to earth and never takes himself too seriously.”

To be iconic means to be incredibly popular and influential in a certain industry or field. Example: Brad Pitt is an iconic actor known for his talents and box office success.

Describe a sports person/athlete you admire – IELTS speaking part 3.

What qualities does a top athlete need to have?

a sports person you admire

I think they would need to be incredibly disciplined, both with regards to their training regime, and their nutrition.

As well as that, they also must have a very strong mentality and a burning desire to be the best.

On top of that, I guess they should have the capability to stay focused and driven, even when the going gets tough .

What’s more, a top sports person should have great sportsmanship, understanding and valuing the roles of their teammates and the importance of fair play.”

Are famous sports stars generally admired in your country?

“Yes,absolutely, sports stars and top athletes are very much admired and idolised here.

Everywhere you look, you see posters, advertisements, and TV shows featuring well-known athletes. People love to cheer on their favourite sports teams and idols.

For example, local football teams have passionate fan bases, and many people revere legendary footballers and basketball stars.

In short, sports stars in my country are seen as heroes and idols that just about everyone looks up to.”

Do you think that sports stars make good role models?

“Absolutely! I believe that sports stars are among some of the best role models out there. Not only do they inspire us to stay active and reach our goals, they also demonstrate the power of hard work, dedication, and integrity.

On top of that, they are generally relatable, with many of them having come from very humble beginnings and worked their way to the top.

As well as that, almost all sports stars have high moral values like teamwork, perseverance, respect, and good sportsmanship.

Role models like LeBron James and Serena Williams serve as shining examples that anything is possible with enough work and determination.”

Do you think that some sports stars/athletes get paid too much money?

an athlete/sports star you admire

With people all around the world living in poverty, I believe that it’s totally unfair.

Mind you, on the flipside, if you look at it from the perspective of the sports star, then some of that huge money compensates for the years of hard work, dedication, and skill needed to be one of the best. So I guess it’s understandable, but still pretty unnecessary when people are in need.”

Do you think that it’s good for children to be competitive in sports?

“Personally, I think it can be quite beneficial for kids to be competitive in sports, as it can teach them important life skills, such as self-confidence and teamwork.

As well as that, It also encourages children to stay active and healthy, rather than sitting at home playing video games or watching TV.

Having said that, it can also be a source of stress and cause them to become overly competitive, which I believe would have a negative impact on their development.

Kids need to recognize the importance of staying active and having a feeling of accomplishment, while also having lots of fun and making sure not to take it too seriously.

Ultimately,I think it’s important for parents and coaches to keep a positive environment and balance competition with a healthy attitude.”

IELTS SPEAKING CUE CARD

Describe a sportsperson/athlete that you admire, you should say:.

Who is the person?

What is his/her achievement

Why do you admire him?

Sample Answer

I’d like to talk about a sportsperson whom I truly admire, and that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, often referred to as “MS Dhoni.” He is a former Indian cricketer and one of the most successful cricket captains in the history of the Indian cricket team. MS Dhoni has a remarkable list of achievements, but one that stands out is his captaincy during the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, where India emerged victorious, marking the country’s first-ever T20 World Cup win.

Additionally, under his leadership, India achieved the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for the first time in 2009, and he led the team to victory in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. What sets Dhoni apart from others is not just his cricketing prowess but also his exceptional leadership skills.

His calm and composed demeanor under pressure earned him the nickname “Captain Cool.” His strategic decision-making on the field and ability to handle high-pressure situations make him a role model for aspiring cricketers and leaders alike. Furthermore, Dhoni’s journey from being a ticket collector in the Indian Railways to becoming one of the most celebrated cricket captains is truly inspirational.

It reflects his resilience, determination, and the belief that with hard work, anyone can overcome challenges to achieve greatness. All in all Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a sports icon whom I deeply admire for his outstanding cricketing achievements, leadership qualities, and the inspiring story of his rise to success.

Q1. Do teenagers like exercising in your country?

Answer – In my nation, children are really into exercising for various reasons. The first and foremost is that kids are well aware of the health benefits of exercise, so they prefer to do exercise in their free time in order to stay in shape. Apart from that, people also love exercising because it acts as a stress buster activity for them because these days they have a lot of pressure. Moreover, these days, they have a hectic schedule so they find exercising a good way to relax.

Q2. Do you think physical education is necessary? Why?

Answer – Without a doubt, physical education plays an important part in everyone’s life because In this era of technology, people are totally dependent on technology and doing everything online while sitting at one place and do not find the time to do any physical type of exercise. Moreover, due to a hectic schedule, they prefer to eat junk food more which is affecting their health badly. Thus, physical education is really necessary to teach them about the value and ways of staying healthy as well as to keep them away from the diseases.

Q3. How do you think physical education classes affect children’s development?

Answer – In my opinion, physical education classes affect children’s development in a positive way by various methods. First and foremost, physical education teaches children the proper amount of nutrients they require as well as the proper methods to perform any type of activity. Apart from that, physical education teaches kids the benefits of exercise, which aids in their brain growth. Furthermore, it teaches a variety of important qualities such as discipline, leadership, teamwork, communication, and many others.

Q4. What kind of exercises do Indian people like?

Answer – Indians love to do different types of exercises as per their needs, as well as their likings and dislikes. Furthermore, it also depends from generation to generation. If I talk about the children, they love to do exercises in the outdoors because they love to play with their friends, like running, bicycling, swimming and many more. On the other hand, teenagers like to do different types of activities by participating in various recreational centers like Gyms as well as by participating in athlete sports. However, old people love to do different types of exercises that allow them to do at their home or at the nearby park like laughing, Yoga, meditation as well as some stretches.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Like majority of my fellow Indians, I love to watch the game of cricket. If I talk of cricket in my country, Sachin Tendulkar is one name which shines like a precious diamond. He was a former captain of the Indian national team and is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all times. Tendulkar started playing the game at the age of eleven and made his test debut against Pakistan at the age of sixteen. He is a record holder by scoring one hundred double centuries and completing more than 30,000 runs in international cricket. He is lovingly called the little master or master blaster by his fans. He is also considered as the god of cricket by his fans and fellow cricketers. The government of India felicitated him with numerous awards and honors such as Arjuna award, Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna award, Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan. He is also the youngest recipient of the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. Not only is he a great player but a wonderful human being also. He always motivates and supports young players of not just cricket but other sports as well. In the end I’d like to say that we all are extremely proud of Sachin Tendulkar and wish that all the young players continue to gain inspiration from this great personality.

Feel free to call for suggestions and queries.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Favourite Sportsperson: Milkha Singh

The word favourite sportsman brings a picture of Milkha Singh to my mind. I had a great liking for this sport as well as a sportsman from the beginning but was much impressed after watching the movie “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” which has been made on the life history of Milkha Singh.

The Life Story of Milkha Singh

The life of Milkha Singh is very was full of misery. He faced a lot of troubles in his childhood. He was born on 21st November 1929 as stated by records of Pakistan. In actual his birth date is uncertain. The place of his birth was Govindpura, a village 10 km from Muzaffargarh district which is now situated in Pakistan. The whole family of Milkha Singh was killed in the violence that arose during the partition, except him and a sister who had been married and was staying in Delhi. Milkha Sigh had witnessed the killing of his whole family and manages to escape to save himself. He came to India from Pakistan. He spent some years at his sister’s house as no one was left except a sister.

He was totally depressed because he was orphaned and left with no motive in his life. Later he was guided by Malkhan Singh to apply for the Indian Army recruitment. He also got selected over there. It was then he realized his own talent and capability of fast running. He was not selected when he first tried for 200m and 400m races. Her work is being published, and it is getting all the love from its readers. She has also done much social work. Due to her social work, she still gets immense love from people. She inspires me a lot. She teaches me it does not matter if you are a girl or a boy, if you have the will to do a particular task you can do it. I still have a lot to learn from her, and I will continue admiring her.

500 Words On The Person I Admire The Most Essay

We all have someone or another whom we admire the most. The person I admire the most is Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli - the Person I Admire The Most

Virat Kohli is considered one of the most successful international cricketers, and I try to imbibe some of his virtues that will help them succeed in life. Virat has always inspired me with supremacy, success, and class in his game. Regardless of the team's situation during the match, Virat always tries to finish the game with self-determination, bravery, talent, and the ability to win.

I also try to succeed in my studies by drawing inspiration from his personality traits. What made Virat Kohli a youth icon is his passion for playing cricket and winning matches for his country. His commitment to his game is no longer a hidden fact. Virat has amassed runs in his successful career due to his involvement in match runs as he does not hand wickets easily to bowlers.

Why I Admire Virat Kohli

I still remember the Ipl season of 2016 when he scored 973 in a single tournament. He shocked everyone that it is possible for a man to be so good at a craft. He had stitches in his hands despite that he made a brilliant century. This day opened my eyes that we can do it whatever may be the circumstances. That day he became an idol for me. He showed that our interest comes secondary to that of the team's interest. It is one such instance of why I love him so much.

Virat Kohli: An Inspiration

His professionalism inspires me to pursue my goals regardless of the circumstances. Virat Kohli is a fitness icon in the sports world, and athletes and their fans look up to him for his fitness. His commitment towards fitness teaches me the value of healthy living and fitness. Self-discipline and practice are the most important aspects of his personality. To master his game, Virat practised more and more to succeed.

Having firmly established himself in every format among many fierce rivals, Kohli is undoubtedly one of the crowning jewels of Indian cricket. Virat Kohli is a symbol of passion and dedication.

A source of inspiration to the youngster, he is a disciplined batsman and was a prolific captain who had led the Indian side to success under his captaincy. His never giving attitude really makes me his fan. He has always motivated me and showed me the ray of hope that with passion everything can be achieved. He is an inspiration to millions including me. His infused values will remain forever in me and he will continue to be my idol.

Therefore we all have someone or the other who makes our love worth living. One who teaches us that the sky's the limit and one who always pushes us to go out of our comfort zone. They are the people who teach us to be the best version of ourselves and we should always hold onto these people and learn from them.
