Growing Crystals (Chemistry)

Growing crystals is a great way to introduce students to lab work and chemistry. Usually before this age they have already played around with the basic baking soda and vinegar type reactions , but if they haven’t definitely add those into the mix too. For crystals growing there are lots of different ways to grow crystals. Some use borax which is not available in some countries, but we also have crystal growing options using other solutions such as alum, salt or sugar! With sugar crystals (candy science), you can also explore taste, which ties into the human body studies too.

Building a Heart Model

Learning about the human body is fascinating and important. We want kids to understand their bodies, how they work, and how to properly care for their bodies. One of our favourite body learning activities was building a heart model that we made beat and move “blood” around. It was a great project for 5th years!

This Heart STEM activity to build a functioning heart model uses all 4 STEM pillars - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Kids will spend some time learning about their own heart rates, then how blood flows through the body. For the exciting conclusion engineer and build a functioning model of a beating heart.

I love when I can combine a great science project with a fantastic book. If you decide to try a windmill engineering challenge (a brilliant STEM Project for 5th grade) there is a fantastic book called The Book Who Harnessed the Wind. This unit study is fantastic because it brings together literacy/reading, history (it’s a true story) plus engineering and physics lessons. How to Keep Ice From Melting for a Longer Time? Purpose of Experiment Of course, it is easy to store ice in the freezer and maintain its state. However, once the cubes are outside the freezer, is there a way we can keep them from melting quickly? Can the variations in temperature affect the results?

Process You will need at least 1-2 bags of ice and various insulators (Styrofoam box, nylon-lined fabric, thermal insulator, plastic bag, etc.) to conduct the experiment. Volcanoes have captured the imaginations of science-fair participants for generations. The fun of simulating oozing lava and creating volcanic-like explosions is undeniable. Volcanoes play an important role in the topographical and meteorological patterns of Earth’s past, present and future. The complex science of volcanoes lends itself to a variety of science-project hypotheses.

Amateur Volcanologist

Volcanologists study both active and dormant volcanoes, how they formed, and their current and historic activity. According to the University of Oregon, most of the work of the volcanologist happens in the laboratory, not at the edge of a red-hot volcano writhing with molten lava. In fact, investigating data and coming up with hypotheses is one of the most important jobs of a volcanologist.

Hazardous Volcanoes

Volcanic eruptions have many hazards, from lava flows to spewing ash. Determining where the most hazardous volcanoes are located in the world is a good project hypothesis. First, students would need to determine the main hazards of a volcano and consider factors such as human life, plant and animal life, air quality and damage to property. Data would need to be collected on volcanoes in different parts of the world and students would need to form conclusions based on the same criteria for each volcano.

Effects on Earth System

Throughout history, volcanoes have had a profound effect on Earth’s systems. Volcanoes have changed the topography of the world and even destroyed civilizations. The effects on Earth’s systems by volcanoes that are currently active are more subtle, but they can still have an impact. Choosing an active volcano and hypothesizing about its impact on the environment around it would make an interesting project. Students can consider the impact to air quality, plant life and even the weather.

Chemistry and Volcanoes

A visually pleasing volcano project involves simulating an eruption. The intensity of volcanic eruptions varies widely and students can hypothesize which type of chemical reactions could cause the biggest eruptions. For example, a project could hypothesize that yeast combined with hydrogen peroxide would create a bigger explosion than vinegar combined with baking soda. Students, with adult supervision, can mix different components to demonstrate the power of volcanic eruptions.

By fifth grade you will have learned that science is a process of asking questions that can be answered by observing, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. You will be expected to use math and science skills you have previously learned and apply them to design scientific experiments and make observations. The experiement you choose to do can cover a variety of scientific topics including physical science, life science, and earth science. Below are just a few ideas you can use for a science fair or to complete on your own.

How Does Pollution Affect Plants?

Does a plant sprout more quickly in a polluted environment? Plant two pots of bean seeds. In the first one, fill with garden soil, water the seeds with tap water, and keep it in a clean environment. Fill the second pot with a mixture of soil and the seeds, a bit of trash, and some polluted water with oil in it. Next, pollute the pot’s environment by spraying chemicals around it. Observe which plant sprouts faster in a few days.

What is the Difference Between Field & Forest Soil?

Do fields and forests have different soil composition? Study the amount of water in different soils, soil salinity, and pH organisms that live in the soil by collecting samples from two or more locations. Soil without gardening or other development is best to study its natural composition. Dig soil 5-6 inches below the surface (away from large plants) and fill a clean jar halfway with it. Label the sample with the location name on the jar in permanent marker. Fill the jar with water at home, close it, and shake lightly until the soil breaks up in the water. Keep the jar in a safe place for a week and all soil components will settle. When rocks, pebbles, sand, silt, clay, and organic remains settle, measure the relative thickness of the layer and compare soil composition from the different locations.

How Does Soil Change as it is Further in the Earth?

Does the relative wetness of soil from various depths differ? Using the above procedure, measure the relative wetness of soil from different depths. Compare soil composition of the surface layer, a sample from 10 inches deep, and a sample from 2 feet deep.

Will Cold Water Freeze Faster than Warm?

Does the starting temperature of water affect how long ice takes to freeze? Make ice cubes with varying starting water temperatures and time which cube freezes first, second. . . and last.

How Does Light Affect Plant Growth?

Does colored light affect seed growth? Put seeds in three pots and place red colored lights in the first, white lights in the second, and blue lights in the third. Wait about a week and see which seeds grow more quickly. If the white light helps the plant grow more quickly (hint, hint!), why?

Will Differently Shaped Ice Melt at Different Speeds?

Does ice shape affect melting time? Put equal amounts of water into different shaped containers and freeze. Time how long it takes each piece of ice to melt.

Presenting Your Results

As a part of the science project , you will probably write a report describing your process and results. In the report, be sure to clearly state the question and the hypothesis, explain the procedure, identify the variables, and state the outcome. Use charts or tables to illustrate data. Draw conclusions by explaining why the outcome turned out the way it did. Finally, read over the typed report and check for mistakes in spelling and grammar.
