Pericles Lewis

Yale university, welcome remarks for yale college international students class of 2021, speech by pericles lewis, vice president for global strategy and deputy provost for international affairs august 21, 2017 at yale university.

International Students of the Class of 2021,

Welcome to Yale College!

We are delighted that you’ve chosen to come to Yale. There are over 140 of you here from more than 60 countries. You are part of the largest class ever to matriculate in Yale College and also the largest group of international students ever to do so.

The history of international students at Yale goes back to the nineteenth century, when students came to New Haven from Colombia, China, Japan, Sierra Leone, and many other countries around the world. In the 21 st century, we have significantly increased Yale’s international profile and enhanced the experience for international students at Yale, partly through the creation of the Office of International Students and Scholars, which is hosting this orientation session.

In coming to Yale College, you have chosen to pursue a broad, liberal education in the arts and sciences. The idea of a liberal education comes down to us from ancient times, when it described the kind of education appropriate for a free citizen. So, a liberal education closely aligned with freedom—the freedom to pursue intellectual questions, the freedom to debate issues of common concern, freedoms that prepare a young person for full citizenship. The ancient world contrasted the “liberal arts” with the “servile arts,” that is, what we would call vocational education, or education for a particular job. While the skills you develop at Yale will be valuable to you in your future careers, they are broader than any one job and they will help you develop not only as a contributor to the economy but also more broadly as a citizen and a human being. Indeed, in a broader sense, liberal education should help you to find your “vocation” or calling, not only the career that you want to pursue but also your broader sense of purpose in life.

In Latin, the word “arts” refers to both the arts and sciences, and the middle ages recognized seven liberal arts: grammar, rhetoric, logic, geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy. Today a liberal arts education spans the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences. When people speak of a “liberal arts education,” they are generally referring to undergraduate education that stresses broad study of the arts and sciences rather than pre-professional training in such subjects as business, law, or medicine. In practice, at Yale, we have a variety of requirements that you will review tomorrow that encourage you to explore a range of subjects before deciding on a specialization. I would urge you, in selecting your courses, to expand your intellectual horizons and to challenge yourself by taking intellectually demanding courses that will introduce you to fields you have not already mastered in high school or your earlier education. Don’t choose the easiest path.

When we speak of a liberal education, then, we are not referring to any particular political viewpoint, but rather to an education that helps you to develop your broad capacities and to see how these fit into your role in a broader society. And a good part of this education takes place outside the classroom, in your informal interactions with classmates and in clubs, societies, and the residential colleges. One advantage of a Yale education is that we pay close attention to this broader learning environment beyond the classroom, and I hope you will take advantage of these extracurricular possibilities.

Today is a remarkable day here in the United States as we are experiencing a total solar eclipse. The sight of the sky darkening has historically brought a sense of foreboding, but today we can also see our understanding of the astronomical event, and our ability to predict it, as a triumph of science and human curiosity. What caused fear to our ancestors can rightly cause wonder and even a sort of pride for us.

It is also a remarkable time in the history of the United States, and I realize that some of you may experience some trepidation as you have undoubtedly heard about the broad divisions in U. S. politics and in particular the harshly negative attitudes to immigrants and to non-whites that have been expressed even in the highest office in the land. I would like to reassure you on this point. The vast majority of Americans are proud of our leadership in higher education and eager to welcome high-achieving students like yourselves to the United States. I think you will find New Haven and Yale to be very welcoming places in this regard. At the same time, it is likely you will encounter people with very differing experiences and sometimes very different views on social and political matters, and I hope you will take those encounters as an opportunity to learn and to test your own beliefs and perhaps broaden your horizons. The result of such encounters need not be total agreement. Sometimes we learn as much from a reasoned discussion that results in an agreement to disagree as we do from pursuing what may be a false consensus.

If you do have any experiences of discrimination or misconduct while you are here, I hope you will share them with us in the Office of International Students and Scholars and with your freshman counsellors, faculty advisers, or deans in your residential colleges. We are eager to make Yale a fully welcoming community in which all students have an opportunity to learn and grow and to contribute their views and efforts to the broader mission of the College, which, according to our mission statement, is:

“to seek exceptionally promising students of all backgrounds from across the nation and around the world and to educate them, through mental discipline and social experience, to develop their intellectual, moral, civic, and creative capacities to the fullest. The aim of this education is the cultivation of citizens with a rich awareness of our heritage to lead and serve in every sphere of human activity.”

In a sense, by coming to Yale, you have already indicated that you intend to become citizens of the world. I hope that your four years here in New Haven help you to achieve that goal; when you graduate four years from now, I hope that you will make great contributions to your home nations, or here in the United States, or to other communities that you may eventually join; and I hope that you will consider yourselves part of the Yale community not only for four years but for the rest of your lives. Thank you, and welcome.

Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

Welcome Address in English For Students

It’s natural for attendees of any event to expect an introductory speech, which sets the tone for the occasion. A host can easily command attention with an effective welcome. Even the longest speeches have the capacity to hold an audience’s interest when delivered in a catchy and impressive manner.

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Our steadfast yet affectionate teachers should be our role models. They inspire us daily and motivate us to reach our greatest potential. They impart wisdom so that we don’t only excel academically, but as good people and responsible members of our society.

Children’s innocence and love are incomparable and difficult to resist. Their smile is the closest thing to heaven that we can glimpse in the world.

School is your children’s second home, and we teachers are their second parents. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of and guide your little angels.

Join us to celebrate our students and make this day as eventful and fun as it can be!

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Welcome Speech Sample for a Business Conference

Good morning to everyone who came out to join us here today. My name is Julius Kaizer and I’ll be hosting today’s events.

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. It won’t be possible without your tireless dedication and contributions. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

Welcome Speech Samples for Family Functions

Huge family events often have speeches: weddings, birthdays, farewell parties, funerals, anniversaries, and so on. Some of these events normally have hosts and esteemed guests. Here are some tips and samples to inspire you.

Tips on Welcoming the Chief Guest?

If you’re searching for tips on how to make a welcome speech for guest, here are some things you can do:

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.
  • Smile and suggest they are being welcomed.
  • Address them formally with the usual Miss or Mr.
  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

Below is a sample of a welcome speech typically delivered during Annual Day. Substitute the appropriate details to match your information and use the framework in other speeches reserved for national holidays.

Welcome Speech for Annual Day

I am overjoyed to have this chance to welcome all of you to our elite institution’s 25th Annual Day. Today’s children are the hope of the next generation. All these graduates we see today, receiving awards for their achievements will go on to lead successful lives. Let them live up to the expectations set before them.

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

Welcome speeches are necessary at events. They usually set the tone or expectations of the people who attended or participated in the occasion. There are many ways in going about delivering a welcome address speech. Review the samples in this article and do your due diligence to craft an outline, framework, or skeleton from the contents that you can use in welcome speeches of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

50+ different ways to say welcome to your guests

By:  Susan Dugdale

The challenge of a welcome speech is to find alternate ways to express yourself sincerely without resorting to a string of undifferentiated "same-old, same-old" words and phrases that have become meaningless through overuse to greet your guests with.

And there's an additional question to answer. Is the event formal or informal? Your response will guide the language choices you make.

Do you need to use formal or informal language?

Is the welcome speech you're preparing formal or informal?

There are major differences. The words you use in an informal speech will be entirely out of place in a formal one. You need to know what is right for the occasion if you want your speech to be a success.

The video below explains the difference and provides six example speech openings to illustrate: three formal and three informal.

How to avoid repetition making your speech boring!

Repetition of a familiar word is easy to do and totally understandable.

Sometimes we can't find the words we want, and we get stuck in a vocabulary rut, using the same phrase or word over and over, and over again, trying to make it cover multiple and/or different situations.

Image: retro woman giving a welcome speech, and repeating the word "welcome" a lot. Text: Repetition can be very boring! Text in s

And yet we know, words are just like clothes. One size does does not fit all.

What's the solution?

Here's three suggestions to individualize or tailor your words to fit your event a little better. And they'll be more interesting for the audience to listen to!

With care you'll find most will adapt either formal or informal use.

1. Add an adjective to the word welcome

Try working in an adjective to describe the quality of your welcome more fully.

I've provided an example sentence or two alongside each adjective to show how it could be used in context.

I know some examples are much more successful, (smooth to say and read), than others.

Some, quite frankly, clunk a little. (I say this with a wry smile ☺!)

If you decide to use the feature word in those that do, perhaps you'll find a way to use it more eloquently!

What sort of welcome are you offering?

It could be a(n):

  • warm  welcome " Luckily the weather is on our side today! The sun and I are pleased to offer you a warm welcome."
  • hearty  welcome  "Here's a hearty welcome, big and warm enough to encompass you all! To say we are thrilled to see you is an understatement."
  • cheerful  welcome "It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all! Your presence makes us very happy."
  • cordial  welcome "Fellow members, please join me in giving our guests the most cordial of welcomes."
  • sociable  welcome "Let's hear it for a sociable welcome! On the count of three, turn to your neighbor and say 'hello'. There are no strangers here, only  friends we are yet to meet."
  • genial  welcome "It's my pleasant duty to bid you all a genial welcome."
  • convivial  welcome "On behalf of my colleagues, I wish you all a convivial welcome. We are going to have a merry and enjoyable time together."
  • agreeable  welcome "The flags are flying. The balloons are ready for release. It's a great day, one we've been planning and waiting for. I'm sure you'll concur, this is an agreeable welcome."
  • pleasing  welcome "It's gratifying to look around and see so many familiar faces. That's a pleasing welcome to what I know is a going to be a great  conference ... "

Or maybe it's a(n):

  • glad  welcome "It's a glad welcome we bring to you this morning, filled with the desires, hopes and dreams we all share."
  • hospitable  welcome "We're delighted to offer the most hospitable welcome we can."
  • amiable  welcome "Dear guests, look around you! An amiable welcome full of friendship is yours."
  • gracious  welcome "Our desire is to extend a gracious and inclusive welcome to all of you. For now let's put aside our differences and instead celebrate what brings us together!"

What about a(n):

Image -young retro salesman. Text: What sort of welcome words do you want? We've got cheerful, hearty, warm (the classic) and delighted.

Then there's a:

  • pleasant  welcome "You know what's great about these events? You are always assured of a pleasant welcome. This is feel-good central and we aim ..."
  • companionable  welcome "Looking around I can see many familiar faces - peers, past and present colleagues. What a companionable welcome! It's great to see you all here ..."
  • grateful  welcome "Many of you have made a huge effort to join us today. On behalf of us all, we are deeply appreciative and offer you our most grateful welcome."
  • friendly  welcome "Today is the day we begin to learn to look through the eyes of others; to find out and experience what the world is like for them. It is also the day we grow bigger than our differences and offer to everyone regardless of historical rights and wrongs, a friendly welcome, an outstretched hand."

Perhaps a(n):

  • appreciative  welcome "Wow, what a gathering we have here tonight. We've got dignitaries, celebrities, fans, and organizational members all brought together for one cause. Ours. Here's an appreciative welcome to you all."
  • superb  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, the room is ready. The tables are set. The band is playing our theme song. And the waiting staff are preparing to take your orders. This is a superb welcome, fit for royalty, and that's what you are to us."
  • delighted  welcome "To our special guests; look around. See the smiles of everyone's faces? We are truly delighted to welcome you here today."
  • favored  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have stars in the sky, and on stage. We are favored to welcome some the brightest the world has seen."
  • honored  welcome "I look around the stage and am in awe with the collected expertise gathered here. We are deeply honored to welcome you."
  • big  welcome "Here's to a big welcome for our guests; Lady Amelia Thistledown and Sir Roger Godfrey!"
  • huge  welcome "Ladies and gentlemen, please give a huge welcome to ..."
  • rapturous  welcome "Do you hear the applause? The audience joins me in a rapturous welcome! We are thrilled to have you with us today."

2. What about the guests you want to welcome?

Think about the guests you want to welcome as part of your speech. What sort of guests are they?  Is there a word, or two, you could use to describe them more fully?

Accurate descriptions of the people coming to the event, either as especially invited guests, or as members of the audience, helps build credibility and trust.

The care you take to find the right words is an excellent investment for everybody involved.

Image: hand drawn crowd figures. Text: Honor your guests by using words to help them stand out from the crowd.

Could your guests be better described as:

  • esteemed  guests?
  • brilliant  guests?
  • celebrated  guests?
  • dear  guests?
  • admired  guests?
  • acclaimed  guests?
  • cherished  guests?
  • respected  guests?
  • revered  guests?
  • wonderful  guests?
  • popular  guests?
  • much-loved  guests?
  • famous  guests?
  • expert  guests?
  • distinguished  guests?
  • honored  guests?
  • valued  guests?
  • appreciated  guests?
  • remarkable  guests?
  • renowned  guests?
  • knowledgeable  guests?
  • treasured  guests?

3. What about the word "guests"?

Image: cross section of an audience. Text: Who, exactly, is your audience? Are these people your peers, colleagues, customers, work mates ...

Who are you talking to? Yes, everybody in the audience is a guest to your event but what could they be more accurately called?

Are these people your:

  • colleagues?
  • associates?
  • classmates?
  • co-collaborators?
  • fellow-travelers, nurses, teachers ... ? (insert the appropriate descriptor)
  • affiliates?
  • conspirators?
  • companions?

And lastly, have fun experimenting!

Do try mixing and matching your words and phrases to fit the occasion. After all there are more flavors to "welcome" than vanilla!

International Student Welcome

Welcome. As Chancellor, I want to personally welcome you to campus. We are glad that you are here. Congratulations!

You are part of a vital and thriving international community at CU-Boulder. We are proud to have a global campus with students from 90 nations!

This diversity of students from all corners of the world help broaden the base of understanding among all students about their neighbors in the world.

You will join and participate in a global community of students and faculty where we seek to share and develop broad cultural understanding and a more complete view of the world around us.

Clearly, we live and work in a global society. Studying, learning and sharing knowledge together prepares all of us for work and collaboration in a global society.

Today, you are one of 2,500 international students on campus and one of nearly 1,000 new students this year! Here, lifelong friendships are made, and you may meet future business or research partners.

Our international students are valued members of our community and we are here to support you. We have resources to support you throughout your academic career. We have a network of people across campus—faculty, your fellow students, Residence Life staff, the Office of International Education—they are all part of an academic team who will help you succeed. We are all here to assist you during your time on campus and after you graduate.

The moment you registered for classes at CU-Boulder, you became a Forever Buff. Being a Forever Buff is an opportunity, but also a commitment. It’s a commitment to stay engaged, stay in touch, and represent the university.

We want you to always be a part of our community, so please stay in touch with us. You stay in touch with your family when you are here … so please stay in touch with us when you are home. When you graduate, or return home to visit, we hope there is a piece of CU-Boulder in your mind and in your heart that returns home with you. And we hope that the networks and relationships you build while you are here on campus will go with you to your home country.

You have taken a courageous step in your academic career by choosing to pursue a degree at a foreign university, and unique opportunities await you both academically and socially. We applaud you for your willingness to embrace new cultural experiences. At the same time, we want you to honor your own personal heritage here in Colorado.

Introduction of the Global Ambassadors Program

There is much to be gained through international and intercultural connections, and at CU-Boulder we do everything we can to facilitate the exchange of people and ideas. This summer, I initiated a Global Ambassadors program.

Global Ambassadors are CU alumni and international leaders worldwide who advise us on how best to recruit, support and engage our international community, including students, alumni, parents and officials from countries around the world. You are now a valued member of this global community. Someday, we may be calling on you to be a Global Ambassador to support your successors here at the University of Colorado.

Introduction of new Dean of Students Akirah Bradley

Now it is my pleasure to introduce you to someone who is also new to campus, our new Dean of Students, Akirah Bradley. Akirah joins us at CU-Boulder from the University of California-Berkeley.

Akirah is one of the many people here to support you. She even knows a thing or two about international travel. She was chief conduct officer on a Semester at Sea international voyage.  I hope you are all able take some time to get to know Akirah during your time here.

Please help me welcome Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Akirah Bradley.

Are you on welcome speech duty for an upcoming program or event? You’ve got nothing to worry about—with the right format and tone, it’s super easy to write and present a welcome speech for just about any occasion. We’ve outlined everything you need to know, from your opening greetings and acknowledgments, to establishing the right tone and nailing your closing remarks. You’ve got this in the bag!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Patrick Muñoz

Patrick Muñoz

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. For example, you could try “Good evening ladies and gentlemen” if you’re introducing a formal event, or “Thank you everyone for coming on this sunny day” for a more relaxed occasion. After you’ve finished the greeting, introduce the event by talking about who organized it and what its purpose is. In the main body of your speech, acknowledge 2 or 3 people who played important parts in organizing the event. You should also emphasize special parts of the event that people should pay attention to, such as where dinner will be or where a conference session will take place. When you’re ready to conclude your speech, tell the audience to enjoy the event by saying something like “I hope you all enjoy the exciting speakers to come.” Finish your speech by thanking the audience for attending. Opening speech - International summer school 2014

Excellencies, deputy minister, students, faculty and staff of the International Summer School, ladies and gentlemen.

Dear international students. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the University of Oslo.  We are proud that you have chosen to spend six weeks in our city this summer. You - the 583 new students – represent 86 different countries.  Literally, the International Summer School is where the world meets.

Indeed, the world should meet much more often than it does today. The exchange of ideas, the fostering of understanding across geographical and cultural divides is of the essence. We are living in a time rife with conflicts and oppression. We are living in a time when the greatest challenges are those that affect us all. More than ever are our destinies intertwined. More than ever do we need knowledge and awareness of the threats and opportunities that lie ahead of us.

Awareness – an important word indeed.  You – our international students and future leaders – know that awareness is a prerequisite for action. Three days ago – on the 20ieth of June – the world observed the annual Refugee Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. The present day situation is a dismal one. Global forced displacement tops 50 million for first time in post-World War II era. A total of 51  million people were forcibly displaced by the end of 2013.

Forced displacement is one of the major global challenges that future leaders will need to tackle. Another one is that of climate change. This year, the International Summer School introduces a new master course - A Changing Arctic – that aims at instilling increased understanding of a region that stands out with its telltale signs of climate changes.

When challenges that affect all of us are discussed, the views from as many as possible of us should be brought to the fore. Over the past two years I have chaired an international commission – sponsored by our own Ministry of foreign affairs - that has looked into the root causes of why health is so unevenly distributed in today’s world. This commission has been a summer school of sorts, in so far as it has included delegates with diverse backgrounds from five different continents. I have experienced first-hand how debates are vitalized, energized and enlightened by recruiting many voices and summoning multifaceted views and perspectives.  In the same vein I trust the International Summer School will be energized by your voices and your perspectives. Yes, the International Summer School boasts superb leaders and teachers. But your own contribution to the learning environment remains essential. Leave an imprint. Expose your views. Let your voice being heard in the debates.

In his opening address, Einar Vannebo referred to Edvard Munch who speaks to us through the eleven paintings that adorn these walls. Munch’s theme is enlightenment, and the transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next. Some of the smaller paintings are dedicated to research. But the two major works – Alma Mater to your right, and The history to your left – clearly show how Munch places education at the core of the university’s responsibility. And note - in The history – that Munch insists that the dialogue across generations should be a symmetrical one. The teacher has climbed down from his ivory tower when he passes on his experience and narratives to an attentive boy.

Munch said of his works in this hall that the “visual expression is to be intrinsically Norwegian as well as universally human”. In saying this he anticipated the philosophy of the ISS. Thus, the undergraduate courses of the ISS focus mostly on Norwegian issues – language, culture, history, and contemporary society. But the perspective is international.

The international perspective pervades the history of this hall – the festive hall of the University of Oslo. As you know, it was Alfred Nobel’s will that the Peace Prize be handed out in Norway. From 1947 to 1989, the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony was arranged in this room – and from 1990 on in the City Hall, where we will meet for a reception later on today.

Many are the famous speeches that have been delivered from this very scene, in the context of the Nobel Prize ceremony.  A common theme has been international understanding and interconnectedness: the need to avoid letting national borders get in the way of empathy and support of those who need it; the need to recognize the one-ness of humanity.  In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1986, Elie Wiesel spoke from this podium and famously stated that indifference is the most insidious danger of all. He called for awareness and engagement. Twenty-two years earlier, in 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. asked for empathy across borders when he said that “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.” This is also the scene wherefrom Alva Myrdal spoke out against nuclear weapons and Mother Theresa talked about the virtues of togetherness.

In other words, with Munch and its historical backdrop this room provides the perfect setting for the opening of an international summer school.

So what kind of campus are you entering? The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest. It was founded in 1811, three years before Norway got its constitution and won national independence, after having been in union with Denmark for 400 years.

Indeed, this year – 2014 – is very much a year of celebration. We celebrate the bicentennial of the Norwegian constitution, one of the world’s oldest and most vital constitutions.  And we celebrate the role that our university played in paving the way for our independence in 1814. Then – as now – universities were considered essential for upholding democracy and independence and for safeguarding the rights embedded in the constitution.  Just a few years ago, the University of Oslo was heavily involved in the revision of our constitution’s article 100 – the one that guarantees our freedom of speech.

The International Summer School has for 68 years been a key institution in the internationalization efforts of the University of Oslo. Long before internationalization became a prioritized goal permeating the entire institution, the Summer School brought thousands of international students to the University. Through the years the Summer School has existed, it has hosted more than 27,000 students from 150 countries, and this summer you will be added to this number. The University is proud of the International Summer School, not least because it lives up to the quality standards that we aspire to for all our units.

I urge you to make the most out of the wonderful opportunity that the ISS offers. It is truly a learning experience that transcends boundaries. The courses at the ISS aim at contributing to increasing your competency in your field of study, but also, in a wider context, at contributing to the development of society.

I hope you will be inspired by the teaching and the learning environment at the ISS, and also that it will make you open to the possibility of returning to the University of Oslo to pursue a degree, to do research, or to work here. Quite a few Summer School students have done that. An important aspect of international student mobility is to promote the overall internationalization of academic life and of the academic community.

You are here to study, for sure – that is the main focus of an academic program. But I hope you will also have time to avail yourself of all the varied cultural and social programs that the ISS has to offer, and that you have time to enjoy each other’s company not only in the classroom. I understand from previous students that a lot of them during their six weeks at the ISS have established networks and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Last but not least, I hope that you take time to explore and enjoy Oslo. The interaction with the City of Oslo is important for the University, and we are proud of our city.  I hope that both the City and the University of Oslo will get another 583 new enthusiastic ambassadors when the summer is over.

With these words I declare the 68th session of the ISS opened.

How to Write Your Welcome Speech for International Webinar

Giving a speech for an international webinar can be exciting and nerve-wracking. Of course, you want to make a great first impression. But you also don’t want to overwhelm your audience with too much information.

So, what can you do to ensure your welcoming speech’s incredible success? Here are some tips on delivering a stellar introduction for your international webinar.

Table of Contents

Say Your Greetings

When giving a welcome speech, it’s always essential to start with a few pleasantries. Saying your greetings shows respect to your audience and sets the tone for the rest of the speech.

In some Asian countries, for example, it’s customary to bow when greeting someone. At the United Nations, delegates from all over the world shake hands when they meet.

No matter the culture, taking a moment to say hello goes a long way toward making everyone feel at ease. And by greeting your participants in a culturally appropriate way, you show that you value their traditions.

With that, here are some ways to say “hello” in various countries around the world.

So whether you’re giving a speech to your classmates or business people, start with a warm hello. It’ll go a long way towards making your audience feel welcome.

Introduce Yourself and Any Seminar Delegates

As for the opening remarks , introducing yourself, and any seminar delegates is vital, although it may seem like a minor detail.

By taking the time to do this, you help create a sense of community and belonging among the participants. Plus, it helps set the tone for the rest of the seminar.

For example, you’re giving a talk at educational institutions. Introducing yourself as one of the respected teachers helps establish credibility.

But if it’s an informal event, you could say, “Dear colleagues, it’s a great pleasure to attend today’s seminar!” Doing so helps create a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Also, introducing yourself and your co-speaker—

  • Sets the tone for the rest of the speeches
  • Helps the audience understand your credentials
  • Allows you to establish rapport with the audience
  • Allows you to make an excellent first impression, and get the audience on your side from the start

Explain the Objectives of the Webinar

Introducing the objectives of the webinar at the start is an integral part of a welcome speech. It orients participants to the webinar coverage and why each one is crucial.

Likewise, it builds credibility by providing an overview of the topics. It also reinforces the purpose of attending the webinar.

All these factors combined create a more engaged and attentive audience, leading to a more successful webinar.

Here’s an example for this part.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our webinar on “Sustainable Development Goals!” My name is Lara, and I will be your speaker today.

Our objectives for this webinar are threefold:

  • To provide an overview of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • To discuss how you can implement the Sustainable Development Goals in the workplace
  • To answer any questions you may have about the Sustainable Development Goals

So, without further ado, let’s begin this webinar.

Outline the Key Points

Outlining the key points of the upcoming discussion is part of writing a welcome speech. Doing so ensures everyone in the audience understands the webinar’s coverage clearly.

Besides that, you can keep the discussion on track in your respective fields. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when creating your outline:

  • Introduce the topic of the discussion. Give a quick overview of what you will cover.
  • Identify the key points you’ll be covering in more detail. You’ll want to focus on these points during your speech.
  • Provide a summary of each key point. Doing so will orient everyone and give a better understanding of the discussion.
  • End with a call-to-action or a question for further discussion. This step will engage the audience and ensure everyone takes something away from the experience.

State the Date, Time, and Duration of the Webinar

Date, time, and duration let your attendees know when they need to be available. It also ensures that everyone is on the same page and knows how long the webinar will be.

By providing this information upfront, you can avoid confusion or frustration later. Additionally, stating these details in your welcome speech shows you’re an organized person.

More than that, it can instill confidence in your attendees. And it can encourage them to participate actively in the webinar.

Ultimately, including this crucial information sets the tone for an informative webinar.

To better understand it, here’s an example.

Hi everyone! Thanks for joining us today for our webinar on personal development.

Before we start, I want to let you know we’ll record this webinar. That said, it will be available on our website to watch later if you can’t make it today.

Also, I wanted to remind everyone that we will take questions at the presentation’s end. You can type your queries into the chat box, and we’ll answer as many as possible at the end.

Finally, I want to let you know that this webinar will last about 45 minutes, and we’ll be starting right on time at 2:00 pm EST.

Get More Resources

Provide a Brief Overview of the Topics

There are various issues to cover in your webinar. And it can be helpful to provide a brief overview of these topics in your welcome speech.

This way, your audience will better understand what you will discuss. Likewise, it sets the stage for the rest of your speech and ensures your audience can follow along and understand the main points of your talk.

What’s more, is that it—

  • Helps to ensure that everyone in the audience is on the same page
  • Provides a roadmap for the rest of the speech and can help keep the speaker on track
  • Gives the audience a hint of what they can expect to learn from the speech

Here’s an example.

Hello everyone!

Thank you for joining us here today. We gather to celebrate the importance of health, natural resources, and free expression. These are all essential components of a happy and productive life.

The importance of good health is something that we can all appreciate. A healthy body allows us to do the things we love and enjoy life to the fullest.

Of course, our natural resources are another vital part of a happy life. We need clean air and water to breathe and drink. Likewise, we need healthy plants and animals to provide us with sustenance.

Then, our freedom of expression is essential for a thriving democracy. And it’s something that we should all work hard to protect.

Thank you for joining us today. I hope you will take away some valuable insights as we go through our webinar to help you live a happier life.

Highlight How Participants Can Benefit from Attending the Webinar

It’s always a good idea to remind participants what they will get from the webinar. Doing so creates anticipation and excitement among the audience. It also helps increase attendance rates.

Highlighting webinar benefits also ensures attendees get the most out of the experience.

There are many different ways in which participants can benefit from a webinar. For example, they may learn new skills or gain accent improvement in new areas of their industry. They may also have the opportunity to talk with other professionals. Or they can discuss important topics related to their field.

Of course, you can also provide other materials, such as handouts and slides. Participants can use these materials to follow along during the webinar.

Thank Participants for Their Time

Thanking participants for their time is a critical element of any welcome speech. It’s a way to show your appreciation for their attendance. And it also sets the tone for the rest of the event.

By thanking participants, you’re signaling that you value their input. Plus, it shows that you want to create a positive, constructive environment.

To thank participants effectively, you need to speak in a conversational tone. Avoid sounding too formal or scripted. Just be polite and sincere, and take a moment to address each person in the room.

Here are some examples of things you might say:

  • “Thank you all for coming today. I appreciate your time and your participation.”
  • “Thank you for being here. I know this is an important issue, and I’m glad we have such a passionate group of people working on it.”
  • “Thanks again for coming. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas.”

Remind Participants to Use the Webinar Hashtag During the Event

Using a designated hashtag will put all the discussions from your webinar in one place. This way, it will be easy for participants to reference later.

In the same way, it can be great for marketing purposes . For example, you can include Twitter handles for all the speakers. Then, your followers who couldn’t attend the live event can still see what they missed. It will also create a buzz within the industry.

Welcome Speech For College Function In English For Students

Speeches are an essential component of every professional or formal event. A welcome speech is a type of speech given by a speaker or the function's host to greet the distinguished Chief Guest and the other guests and express gratitude for their presence. It helps to glorify the occasion.

Everybody expects an introductory speech for an event. And that is because the opening speech sets the tone for the entire event. One can easily attract the attention of the audience with a catchy first line and introduction. So it is very important to make a good first impression.

To make guests feel welcomed, you'll need a powerful speech. Here are some examples of speeches that you might use to impress your guests. These speeches are categorised under several headings. Any of these can be used for your forthcoming events.

Let’s go Through Some Long and Short Speeches

Long speech  .

This form of opening speech for an event is extremely important if one intends to take time and welcome and extend gratitude to everyone involved in making the event successful.

Good Morning everyone! A very warm welcome to the respected teachers and the incredible parents. I am so grateful to welcome our students to the commencement ceremony (mention the name of the event). I feel privileged to open this event and stand here, where many accomplished people who I admired and looked up to once stood.

A very special welcome to our Chief guest (mention their name). They truly set a benchmark for multi-hyphenated achievements. They are an entrepreneur, coach and author of the best selling books in our country and even abroad. Their quiet charitable endeavours at such a young age speak volumes of the person they are and the upbringing they had. Thank you for accepting our invitation to address our students who are about to start another new chapter in their lives.

I express my gratitude to our esteemed Principal (mention name) for their approval. They have assisted us in not just our development but also in enhancing our creativity and knowledge. And last but not the least, a heartfelt thanks to our esteemed lecturers, without whom we would be incomplete as students. They were always here to assist and advise us in unimaginable ways. They helped us with the development of ideas and the execution of those ideas.

Our Principal, professors, other associates, and the administration department have all supported us. I also can't help but admire my team's tenacious attitude, which went above and beyond to guarantee in successfully organising and completing the event. We all also owe a special appreciation to our sponsors without whom the yearly celebration would be incomplete.

We are all gathered here to mark the end of a year and receive our much-deserved appreciation and certificates. A semester has passed, and another year has come to an end. I am certain that you are all feeling anxious and giddy with excitement at the same time. This is the final official ceremony that we will ever attend in our prestigious school/college (mention the name). The ceremony will last until (mention time), after which our guests will give a message to the students. Our students will also have the opportunity to ask questions and converse with our speaker during a question-and-answer session. Tea and snacks will be offered at the end. Please stay until the end of the session to show your support for our participants.

Our Honourable Principal will address the gathering tonight. I'm confident that their speech will not just be a collection of words but a strong motivational speech.

For all of the freshmen attending the college this year, I would like to inform you that our college toasts its annual celebration with great excitement and festivities every year, creating amazing memories. Of course, preparing for this big day takes a lot of time and effort because it cannot be achieved overnight. It requires meticulous scrutiny of every element, as even the tiniest oversight might derail the entire endeavour. So please give a huge round of applause to all the organisers!

Let us applaud the efforts of all the contestants who have worked hard in order to shine in their performance. We were quite lucky in having the support of all parties, not just for the participants, but also for the backstage crew.

For today's celebration, a variety of performances have been scheduled. We have Dance performances, singing, and playing instruments, and a variety of other activities like quizzes and other competitions. So everyone! Get ready for some incredible performances from our students, and trust me when I say that you will not be able to take your gaze away from them.

After completing the first round of performances, there will be an awards event recognising the talents and efforts of our college students who competed at various zonal, state, and national level events.

There are no free lunches in the world. Just because you studied here doesn’t mean you are entitled to all the opportunities. You must remember to work hard and earn every opportunity you want. Take every challenge you face as an opportunity for another chance to prove your worth. Also, know the difference between people to whom you have to prove yourself and those you don’t have to. Always remember to have a sense of humour in life. Only that will get you through the tough times. Life is truly special and with patience and hard work, you will certainly make responsible decisions for yourself, your family and for your country as well.  Take accountability for your failures and learn from them. Don’t let anything bring you down. Stay as passionate and driven as you are today. Keep achieving and reach great heights with flying colours.

That is all from me, friends! I thank you all for your patience. I'll meet you after the event. I hope you relax and enjoy the evening.

Short Speech

This form of welcome speech for an event is helpful when the presenter wishes to keep it simple, short and effective without diverting focus from the main event.

Good Morning everyone! A warm welcome to respected teachers, parents and students. A special thanks to the Chief Guest of the day (mention his/her name). It's an honour to have such an accomplished author and entrepreneur among us. Thank you (sir/ ma’am/ mx) for accepting the invitation to deliver the keynote speech today and for guiding our students for new beginnings.

Your teachers have guided you in all your endeavours and your parents have constantly supported you through it. This would not be the same without them. I extend my sincere thanks to all the teachers and parents for their understanding and support.

This is a highly multi-talented batch of students in our school. Aside from academics, we value advancement in the arts, cultural activities, and sports. One of the best aspects of our college is that it places equal emphasis on all areas to develop the overall talents and personalities of the students. I stand here, feeling lucky to be a part of your life, even if it is only in a small way. This school is so proud of all you have accomplished and every achievement you have garnered for yourself.   You all have been excellent performers in academics and won so many olympiads and awards. And you didn’t hold back even in extracurricular activities like sports tournaments like martial arts, football, basketball and badminton. Our school has also been a top performer in inter-school events like dancing, singing, speech, elocution and debate. The book club that you have started which is now thriving also shows your innovative side.

Our students have put their best foot forward to make this college function a success. Preparations have been underway since last month. Let us all take a moment to appreciate them.

Let me provide the schedule for today's function before we get started. To begin with, we have our principal inviting our honoured guests. We then have a speech, followed by the pupils' performances. At last, our honoured visitors take the stage and relate their experiences. Our distinguished keynote guest will then present medals to the students.

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a good time at the celebration and I wish you all to take some lovely and happy memories with you. I now invite our Principal Shri (Name of your Principal) to speak a few words.

These are samples for a college event. To extend an understanding, let us go through a general guide for writing a speech.

Address the audience - "Good evening to everyone present here!" is an appropriate greeting. Then, using a sentence like "It is my pleasure to invite everyone to our magnificent venue tonight," welcomes the audience to the event. Keep the tone in check. If it's a special occasion, use a more solemn tone.

Welcome the guests - "A warm welcome to all the esteemed guests present here today!" is a simple and clear greeting to use. Use a sentence like "It's so nice to see you all here on this beautiful day" to make them feel welcome. More informal language may be suitable for an occasion with close friends and relatives. Include a few jokes in your speech to lighten it up.

Information about the event - Give a brief description of the event's name and purpose. If it's important, provide the event's name and age, and a little about the organisation that put it on.

Thank the helpers/aiders - Mention at least two people who assisted in making the event a reality. Mention their names as well as the roles they played.

Engage the audience - Mention any particularly noteworthy aspects of the incident. If applicable, introduce what's coming up later in the event or the future days. Pick the most significant elements and encourage people to stick around for or pay special attention to them.

Ending the speech - If appropriate, express your hope that the audience appreciates the event. Send your warmest greetings to them for the remainder of the event.

Duration   - Keep your discourse to a reasonable length. The event will determine the duration. A shorter speech is usually better because most people just want to get on with the event. Smaller events should last no more than 1-2 minutes, whereas larger and more formal events, such as conferences, should last no more than 5 minutes.

I am feeling proud in saying that the talent they have displayed here today is sufficient to say that they have the potential to become worthy citizens of our society. Education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom.

Undoubtedly we are very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers, and instructors who recognize this. If this infrastructure and teachers are the two resources available to the school, then definitely, we the students are the third ones. Really, one of the joys of teaching is to draw that creative, academic and sporting potential out of the students.

We all are gathered here on this Annual Day to motivate and inspire the young minds to showcase their talents. This is a highly important occasion for everyone. It is because of that apart from the fact that this celebration highlights our school’s continuous success in the area of education. And, this platform is also an opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest of today’s evening.
