Title: The Transformative Power of Yoga – Cultivating Harmony in Body, Mind, and Spirit

Introduction :

Yoga, an ancient practice originating from India, has gained global popularity for its holistic approach to health and well-being. Combining physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and ethical principles, yoga offers a comprehensive system for cultivating harmony in body, mind, and spirit. This essay explores the origins and philosophy of yoga, its physical and mental benefits, and its profound impact on personal transformation.

Origins and Philosophy

Yoga traces its roots back thousands of years to ancient Indian civilization. It is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy and encompasses various paths to self-realization. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” which means to unite or join. It refers to the union of the individual self (jiva) with the universal consciousness (Brahman).

The practice of yoga is guided by the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a foundational text that outlines the philosophy and principles of yoga. Patanjali describes yoga as the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind, leading to a state of inner stillness and self-awareness.

Physical Benefits of Yoga

Yoga offers numerous physical benefits that contribute to overall health and well-being. The practice of asanas, or physical postures, improves flexibility, strength, and balance. It enhances body awareness, alignment, and posture, reducing the risk of injuries. Regular yoga practice can alleviate chronic pain, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance the functioning of the respiratory, digestive, and immune systems.

Mental and Emotional Benefits of Yoga

Beyond the physical realm, yoga provides profound mental and emotional benefits. The practice of pranayama, or breathing techniques, calms the nervous system, reduces stress, and promotes relaxation. Meditation cultivates mindfulness, improving focus, concentration, and emotional stability. Yoga fosters self-acceptance, self-compassion, and resilience, helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with greater ease. It promotes mental clarity, creativity, and a sense of inner peace.

Ethical Principles of Yoga

Yoga is not just a physical exercise but a way of life. It encompasses ethical principles known as the Yamas and Niyamas, guiding practitioners towards a virtuous and mindful existence. The Yamas include non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, and non-possessiveness. The Niyamas include purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender to a higher power. These principles encourage individuals to cultivate positive relationships, live with integrity, and embrace self-reflection and personal growth.

Personal Transformation and Spirituality

Yoga is a transformative practice that goes beyond the physical and mental realms, opening doors to spiritual growth and self-realization. It provides a path for individuals to connect with their inner selves and tap into their innate wisdom and intuition. The practice of yoga fosters a sense of interconnectedness, recognizing the oneness of all beings and the unity of the universe. It invites individuals to explore their spiritual nature and cultivate a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in life.

The Global Impact of Yoga

Yoga’s profound impact has transcended cultural boundaries, reaching people of diverse backgrounds and belief systems worldwide. It has gained recognition for its ability to improve physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. In 2014, the United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day, highlighting its global significance. On this day, people around the world come together to celebrate and practice yoga, emphasizing its role in promoting peace, harmony, and unity.

Conclusion :

Yoga is a transformative practice that offers a holistic approach to health and well-being. It harmonizes the body, mind, and spirit, fostering physical strength, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. Through the practice of asanas, pranayama, meditation, and ethical principles, individuals can experience profound personal transformation. Yoga’s impact extends beyond the individual, promoting global unity, peace, and interconnectedness. As more people embrace yoga, its benefits continue to ripple through society, creating a positive impact on individuals, communities, and the world at large. An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga is the ancient way to attain physical, mental, and spiritual practice. Primarily originating in India, the word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit, meaning to unite. This unity signifies the ultimate union of the body with consciousness and thus attaining definitive peace.

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, on December 11 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 to be marked as the International Day of Yoga.

It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. This was looked up as a process and technique to interconnect the mind, body and soul together and take a step closer to enlightenment. As this practice gained popularity in the West, this started to be termed an exercise and relaxation method. This was also associated with the claims to alleviate any existing physical injuries and chronic pains.

The idea to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. It was during his UN General Assembly speech where the resolution was introduced by India's Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, to June 21 as International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.

In his speech given in the UN, the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, gave the idea of making International Yoga important.

He said in his speech," Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

With this, the UN Assembly accepted this proposal and decided to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 every year. Also, there are several exercises being organized in the schools like writing International Yoga Day Essays for students in English and other vernacular languages.

Significance of Yoga

Shiva, also known as Adiyogi, is considered the originator and creator of Yoga. This was further brought to the masses by the Saptarishis. Then, seven people were impressed by his level of determination, so they decided to learn from him, and they sat still for more than 84 years.

What is yoga?

Most people know yoga as a kind of exercise which aims at developing strength and flexibility. To practise yoga, you learn a series of ‘postures’, where you put your body into different positions. The correct breathing is also important. However, yoga is really about more than just exercise. In 2014, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, asked the United Nations to create an International Day of Yoga, saying that yoga ‘is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature’. He felt that yoga could not just help people to be healthier but also help connect people to each other and to nature. The United Nations agreed, and International Yoga Day is now celebrated on 21 June.

Where did yoga come from?

The history of yoga goes back at least 5,000 years, and some people claim it is nearer 10,000 years ago. It was first developed in Northern India and at this stage was a spiritual as well as a physical form of exercise, connected with both Hinduism and Buddhism. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yoga was introduced to the Western world when Swami Vivekananda travelled to the United States to talk about yoga at a conference in Chicago in 1893. Others followed in the 1920s and 1930s, and by the 1960s yoga had become a very popular form of exercise in the United States and in Europe. Most people who practise yoga today do not do it for spiritual reasons.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga is good for the mind and body. Regular practice of yoga helps people to improve their balance and stamina. Although you won’t really get out of breath, like you might playing football or running, it does help to keep your heart healthy and you can lose weight. It can also help with back pain.

The breathing taught in yoga can help people to reduce stress and anxiety. There are lots of different possible breathing patterns you can do. Yoga also improves concentration and helps people to sleep better, so it’s great for anyone who’s under pressure at work or in their studies.

Different types of yoga

There are lots of different types of yoga, so you can choose what suits you best. Hatha Yoga is often good for beginners, because you hold each position for a few breaths. In Vinyasa Yoga you change position much more quickly and you might get out of breath. It’s quite challenging if you haven’t done much yoga before. Bikram Yoga is sometimes called ‘hot yoga’, because the room must be heated to around 40 degrees. As well as these and other more traditional forms of yoga, there are also some more unusual modern forms of yoga. For example, you might enjoy ‘laughter yoga’, where people do breathing exercises and laugh about nothing in particular – laughing is very good for your health. Or what about ‘Aeroyoga’, where you do yoga while you are hanging from the ceiling? It’s supposed to be very good for your back. Or ‘Doga’, where you do yoga together with your pet dog?

Whatever kind of yoga you choose, there are definitely some health benefits, and you should have fun too.

referring to the preparation exercise, wouldn't be better and more expectable, after a definition having an ''-ing'' form or an adjective, to expect us to find another similar part of speech (an -ing form or an adjective) with the same meaning. Or it could be written -for example-''[the state of] being able to stand...is... ''balance''. Does it make sense in English what I'm trying to say? Many thanks to all of you Nikos

Hello Nikos,

That's a good point. It's always difficult to balance clarity, completeness and simplicity. In this case, we chose simplicity.

All the best, Kirk The LearnEnglish Team

I'm in the B1 level, but I can easily understand all your B1-level articles and solve their tasks. Shall I shift to the B2-level articles and adapt to them? I've recently seen some B2-level articles, I can understand these articles easily again, but sometimes the new words are so challenging for me.

Hi arashjahanbakht,

Yes, that sounds like the right thing to do!

A level (e.g. B1) is a general category for a person's overall language proficiency, including all areas of their language, so it's quite common to have some particular areas (e.g. vocabulary, reading) that are stronger (or weaker) than the overall level.

Good luck with it!

The LearnEnglish Team

Importance of Yoga in Todays Lifestyle

Yoga is practised all over the world. About 2.2 billion people practise yoga worldwide. According to a survey, the number of Americans who practise yoga has increased by 50% in recent years to over 36 million in 2016.

Yoga is an ancient practice of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, which originated in India and is now practised in various ways in the world. –

The Hindus know the meaning of yoga for decades, and for many years the entire world is talking, practising and embracing yoga and its benefits. People knew the importance and power of yoga over overtime.

Here are essays on the importance of yoga of different types that will help you on the subject whenever you need it. You can choose any meaning of yoga according to your needs:

Human beings comprise three elements: body, mind, and soul that satisfy these three needs: health, knowledge, and inner peace.

Health is a physical need, understanding of our psychological need, and the peace a spiritual need when all three available, there get improvements.

Two major types of Yoga

  • Yoga Asanas

Yoga brings relief from various diseases on the physical level. The exercise position (asanas) strengthens the body and creates a feeling of well-being.

From a psychological point of view, yoga improves the intellect and helps in concentration, calms emotions and encourages caring for others.

Practising breathing techniques (Pranayama) calms the mind. In the field of spiritual yoga, it brings awareness and the ability to calm down. We feel inner peace through meditation. Therefore, yoga is a practical philosophy that covers all aspects of human beings.

It teaches the individual’s evolution through the development of self-discipline and self-improvement . Everyone, regardless of their age, living standards and religion, can practice yoga. Yoga helps discipline our sense of strength with our strength. ”

Benefits of Yoga asanas and Pranayams in our life

It improves fitness, control stress, and well-being, mental clarity and a greater understanding of oneself. People of all ages can practice yoga and know its importance.

These asanas increase muscle strength, coordination, flexibility, and help maintain our cholesterol level by combining body control, reducing weight, normalizing blood pressure, and improving cardiovascular performance.

Also, reduce stress in the lives by comforting the mind. The body generally works to heal itself. It can be used not only as a way of shaping various levels but also as a tool for self-healing.

In today’s world of busy life and travel more, most people find it difficult to devote time to their health and fitness. This led to an increase in health problems and stress-related issues – the leading cause of death in modern times.

Unlike the first half of the century, when the disease infectious was the leading cause of death, current health problems are mainly related to lifestyle.

The cardiovascular system, heart disease, strokes and atherosclerosis, chronic lung diseases, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, suicide, and various types of cancer are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and behaviour. At some point, a doctor appears in everyone’s life.

Yoga is also self-diagnosis, cure, prevention, and maintenance. Millions of people practice safe and effective yoga and have never had doctors for thousands of years. By doing yoga, a person can monitor progress, and he will surely learn how yoga is beneficial.

In the matter of self-diagnosis, yoga postures and activities can be effortlessly presented, as well as with little likely effort. The illusion of yoga lies in the detail that when we start the rudimentary sections, we can immediately discover our deficiencies.

If we are ready, we should not be discouraged. We can practice yoga with a little care and patience. It unleashes our body’s natural adaptive and rejuvenating abilities.

If we do not use it, we lose it, and if we start to use it again, we can recover most. Some even say that yoga has given them more vitality than ever in their lives. Even those who started later in life also get benefits from their practice.

When it comes to athletes, yoga can be a significant improvement in regular training exercises. Adding yoga to a routine training program helps build strength, flexibility, range of motion and concentration, as well as reduce stress and tension.

The most important benefit of adding yoga to your training program is the impact on performance. It allows the athlete to train more and more because the movement is more significant and the fear of injury reduces.

Some believe this deity; others find it very addictive and effectively replace negative thoughts. It is good to say that if we practised daily yoga in our lives, 75% to 85 % of us would not suffer chronic back, neck and head pain.

Our body takes time in responding to it. Drink adequate water and eat nutritious meals along with regular moderate exercise and yoga.

The power of yoga is to make the life process as efficient and enjoyable as possible. At first, it is vital to know the process of yoga, how to stretch, how to relax, and how to breathe.

Then we will be ready for safe training. Yoga does not deprive the characteristics of authenticity, health, compassion, but instils them in us.

When we start practicing simple asanas, we immediately find what to look for, paying attention to what it needs. The effects are immediate, and the results become increasingly visible. The longer and more often, we get involved in the pure and forgiving art of yoga.

The more this has a therapeutic effect on us. Yoga is no less magical than the force of life itself. Unlock the miracle of life and release hidden energies.

Thanks to this art, anyone can experience Divinity and enjoy the freedom from pain, ignorance, and other funny rewards such as longevity and happiness. It took some time to respond to us. Of course, unraveling takes time. If we still breathe, it is never early or late to start practising yoga.

Yoga is a beneficial practice, easy to do and helps get rid of some severe health problems that are common and widespread in today’s lifestyle. I hope you liked this amazing essay on the Importance of Yoga.

Essay on yoga

Yoga is one of the oldest healthcare systems in India, under which physical and mental balance is maintained at the highest order. The word yoga in Sanskrit means “to unite” and hence yoga refers to a unified discipline.

History of Yoga

The practice of yoga began 5000 years ago during the Indus Valley Civilization in northern India. The Indus Valley Civilization is the suggested origin of yoga as several yoga positions are depicted in seals including the Pashupati seal.

Its first mention is found in ‘Rigveda’. Yoga was gradually developed by Brahmins who eventually documented their practices and beliefs in the Upanishads. Initially, yoga lessons and teachings were transferred orally from teachers to disciples. These were followed by Patanjali in the first century in the name of ‘Yoga Sutras’. The ‘Yoga Sutras’ are the most credited source of yoga, hence Patanjali is known as the ‘Father of Yoga’.

International Yoga Day June 21

The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during his speech at the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly), on 25th September 2014. Following this initial resolution, UNGA held informal consultations on a draft resolution titled ‘International Day of Yoga’ on 14 October 2014.

India’s proposal for an International Day of Yoga received overwhelming support from 177 out of 193 members. June 21 was chosen as the day because it is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and holds special significance for many countries.

Origin of Yoga

The origins of yoga date back more than 4,000 years when Patanjali laid down the description of yoga, which has turned into a scientific method aimed at uniting the mind, body, and soul.

This union which comes through yoga is said to bring about not only physical benefits but mental benefits as well, taking the individual to a level that could not be reached by manipulating one factor alone.

Is yoga helpful during the COVID-19 lockdown?

It includes physical, mental, and spiritual exercises. Yoga is not only known to be beneficial for the heart and blood circulation, but its practice can provide the body with incredible immunity boosters to fight against COVID-19.

Essay on Importance of Yoga 500 Words

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word, ‘YUJ’. It means to join, connect or unite. It is the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Yoga is 5000 years old Indian philosophy. It was first mentioned in the oldest sacred text – The Rig Veda (Vedas were a collection of texts containing mantras, spiritual information, songs and rituals to be used by Brahmins, the Vedic priests.

Yoga is being practiced in the Indian society since thousands of years. A person doing yoga will move from one posture to the other called Asana. Yoga benefits people who practice it regularly.

The form of exercises performed in Yoga is called as ‘Asana’ which are capable of bringing about stability of body and mind. Yoga Asana are the simplest and easiest way to reduce our excess weight and keep fit.

ORIGIN OF YOGA

Yoga originated in ancient India thousands of years ago, long before the first religion or belief system was born. It is believed that Shiva is the first Yogi or Adiyogi and the first guru. Thousands of years ago, on the banks of Lake Kantisarovar in Himalayas, Adiyogi shared his knowledge into legendary seven sages as it was hard to put all his wisdom and knowledge in one person. The sages took this powerful yogic science to various parts of the world, including Asia, North Africa, Middle East, and South America. India is blessed to have found the yogic system in its fullest expression.

The fossil remains of Indus-Saraswati civilization are an evidence of the presence of Yoga in ancient India. This presence finds a mention in the folk traditions. It is included in the Indus valley civilization, Buddhist and Jain traditions. According to the studies, Yoga was being practiced under the direct guidance of a Guru and its spiritual value was given a lot of importance. Sun was given the highest importance during Vedic period and that’s how Suryanamaskar was invented later on.

However, Maharishi Patanjali is known as the father of Modern Yoga. He did not invent Yoga as it was already there in various forms. He assimilated it into the system. He saw that it was getting quite complex for anyone to understand it in any meaningful way. So he assimilated and included all aspects into a certain format – Yoga Sutras.

The role of breath is very important in the practice of Asana or Yoga positions. Breath is a vital force and our body requirement of oxygen changes depending on our actions. If we exercise then we require more oxygen hence the breathing becomes faster and if we are relaxing then our breathing becomes relaxed and deep. In yoga, the focus is integrated on breath while indulging in slow movements as well as while doing complete Asana. Yoga promotes smooth and relaxed inhalation and exhalation during the practice.

Yoga is only partially understood as being limited to Asana. But people fail to realize the immense benefits Yoga offers in uniting the body, mind and breath. Yoga can be opted and practiced by any age group and any body size. It is possible for anyone to start. The size and the fitness level don’t matter as there are modifications for every yoga asana according to different people.

I will mention some of the psychological benefits of yoga in my essay on yoga as follows:

  • Yoga helps to relax and reduce stress, as meditation exercises reduce the secretion of the hormone cortisol, which is responsible for raising the level of stress.
  • Yoga has a great role in reducing anxiety, and this makes a person more stable when exposed to trauma, as he gains, through performing yoga exercises, a sense of peace and inner calm.

Benefits of yoga for weight loss

Yoga is like other types of sports in that it helps to lose weight and get rid of excess fat. Since yoga helps a person control the mind and body, this makes the person have a strong will and more resistance to his desire to eat.

Thus, he can follow a healthy diet easily, and he can control himself and refrain from forbidden foods during the diet.

All of this helps to lose weight in a healthy way.

At the end of my essay on yoga, I have presented you with the definition of yoga, its origins, as it was originally an ancient Indian sport practiced by Hindus and Buddhists, then moved to Western countries, and from there to the rest of the world.

Yoga is characterized as a physical and mental sport, and it has physical benefits such as strengthening the body and increasing its flexibility, increasing disease resistance, reducing pain and other physical benefits.

Can Weed Improve a Workout?

Some exercisers say cannabis eases their pain and anxiety — and makes fitness more fun.

Samantha O’Brien, with black headphones around her neck, holding a pair of purple weights.

By Hilary Achauer

The first time Samantha O’Brien took a boxing class at her building’s gym, she was overwhelmed with anxiety. The instructor was loud and intimidating and ran the class like a boot camp. If someone fell behind, everyone had to work harder.

Ms. O’Brien, 36, left the class thinking she’d never return. A few days later, her partner came home with some cannabis gummies he said might offer her a burst of energy. She thought of the boxing class, and how she wanted to show the instructor he hadn’t scared her off. So she ate half a gummy, got into her workout clothes and went to the class.

The shouting didn’t bother her anymore. “I was brighter, lighter,” Ms. O’Brien said, adding that the small dose kept her going through the session. Now she frequently mixes cannabis and exercise, regularly attending the boxing class along with Pilates and boot camp workouts after taking weed products.

Scientists have refuted the idea that marijuana is a performance enhancer for competitive athletes. But some amateurs are turning to it before exercise because it eases their chronic pain and anxiety — or just because it makes working out more fun.

Alex Friedrichs, 30, a manager of a chiropractic clinic in Vancouver, Canada, said that cannabis puts her in the moment during exercise. “I appreciate what my body is capable of, what my body is doing and the things I’m seeing around me,” she explained, “like running in a beautiful area or a pretty day.”

Addressing Chronic Pain

In a small 2019 study , the top reasons people used cannabis before exercise were to increase enjoyment and focus. But close behind was pain relief. Research has shown that marijuana can help some patients alleviate chronic pain , which affects some one in five people around the world. When the pain is treated, people become more functional, said Dr. Alan Bell, a physician and assistant professor at the University of Toronto who was the lead author on a set of clinical practice guidelines for using cannabis to treat chronic pain.

Cannabis “may bring muscle relaxation or a sense of ease, and so it allows people to increase and maintain their physical function,” said Dr. Deondra Asike, an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist at Johns Hopkins University. She added that once people’s fear of movement was gone, some would find they could do things such as yoga or taking hike.

That said, Dr. Bell does not recommend cannabis as a first-line treatment for pain, and only considers it when milder medications, like NSAIDs , aren’t effective.

Joanna Zeiger, an epidemiologist and former Olympic triathlete, was reluctant to use cannabis even after she flipped over her handlebars at the 2009 Ironman World Championship, breaking her collarbone and badly injuring her rib cage.

But after years of chronic pain resulting from her accident, she tried it. Initially it made her sleepy and dazed. But she eventually found a dosage that eased her pain and allowed her to exercise, an experience that led her to create the Canna Research Foundation. Dr. Zeiger, who was an author on the 2019 study, said that cannabis was not a panacea: “It’s a tool in my tool kit.”

Easing Anxiety

For Morgan English, it wasn’t pain that kept her from exercising, it was anxiety. A history of eating disorders and mental health struggles led her to dislike moving her body and view exercise as punishment, she said. Ms. English, 31, said cannabis helped her get past some of her fears.

“I didn’t have anxiety about what other people at the gym were thinking about me ,” she said about exercising with cannabis. “I was just very much in the zone and I was focused on how good it felt to move my legs.”

In 2019, Ms. English started a company called Stoned and Toned, which offers online workouts that combine cardio and cannabis.

This is not to say that weed can ease anxiety for everyone. While some people find it helps, it can also exacerbate those feelings, said Jill Stoddard, a clinical psychologist who specializes in managing stress and anxiety. And there is a risk that when someone uses cannabis to manage anxiety in one area of their life, Dr. Stoddard said, it can lead to dependence on the drug in every situation that provokes anxiety.

She recommended seeing a mental health practitioner for tools to address underlying anxiety before resorting to cannabis as a solution.

Not to Be Used Lightly

While recreational marijuana usage is now legal in 24 U.S. states, it is still banned in many places. The drug has a powerful effect on the brain and should not be combined with potentially dangerous sports — or with any activity you drive to.

Dr. Zeiger said people should only use cannabis before a workout if they have used it previously and know how they respond. She recommends talking with a physician first, to make sure the drug won’t have an adverse reaction with your other medications, and to choose a low-risk activity such as yoga or a body-weight workout. Also, it’s important to remember that cannabis can be abused, and around one-fifth of people who use it develop cannabis use disorder.

People who combine movement and marijuana repeated a well known piece of advice when it comes to cannabis: Start low, go slow. This is especially true when using edibles, which can take 45 minutes or longer to take effect.

Some said they kept a journal — or used an app like Tetragram, a medical cannabis log — to jot down how much they consumed before exercising and how it made them feel.

Otha Smith, the founder of Tetragram, runs about 30 miles a week. He uses cannabis to manage his joint pain, but said his first experiment was a bust: He tried a 10 milligram edible and never made it out the door. Finally, he settled on a 2.5 milligram gummy with a one-to-one ratio of CBD and THC, which he consumes about an hour before he goes on a run.

“It’s there to enhance your mind-body connection,” Ms. English said about the role of weed in a workout, “not to pull you out of reality.”
