what is essay bot

Essay writing is an essential part of academic life, and students often seek out tools and resources to help them with their writing process. In recent years, Essay Bot has gained popularity as an AI-powered writing tool that claims to help students generate high-quality essays quickly and easily. However, there has been much debate about the accuracy and reliability of Essay Bot. In this detailed review, we will explore the capabilities of Essay Bot and evaluate its effectiveness as a writing assistant.

What is Essay Bot?

Essay Bot is an AI-powered writing tool that is designed to help students generate essays on various topics. IT uses natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to analyze and interpret essay prompts, research relevant information, and generate written content . The goal of Essay Bot is to provide students with a convenient and efficient way to create essays without the need for extensive research and writing skills.

Accuracy of content

One of the main concerns about Essay Bot is the accuracy of the content IT generates. While the tool claims to produce high-quality essays, there have been instances where the content generated by Essay Bot has been found to be inaccurate or misleading. This can be a significant issue for students who rely on Essay Bot to help them with their academic assignments.

To evaluate the accuracy of Essay Bot, we conducted a series of tests where we provided the tool with essay prompts on various topics. We found that while Essay Bot was able to generate content that was coherent and well-structured, there were instances where the information provided was not entirely accurate. This is a major concern, especially for academic writing , where the accuracy of information is crucial.

Reliability of Sources

Another aspect to consider when evaluating the accuracy of Essay Bot is the reliability of the sources IT uses to generate content . Essay Bot claims to utilize reputable sources to gather information for essays, but there have been reports of the tool using unreliable or outdated sources, which can impact the quality and credibility of the essays IT produces.

During our evaluation, we found that Essay Bot often relied on general information from open-access resources, such as Wikipedia, rather than utilizing scholarly or peer-reviewed sources. This can undermine the reliability of the content and lead to issues with credibility and academic integrity.

Effectiveness as a writing Assistant

Aside from accuracy, another important aspect to consider is the effectiveness of Essay Bot as a writing assistant. The tool claims to help students with the entire writing process, from generating ideas to structuring and formatting the essay. However, there have been mixed reviews about the effectiveness of Essay Bot in assisting with the writing process.

Many users have reported that while Essay Bot can help with generating content , IT lacks the ability to provide comprehensive support for organizing and refining the essay. Additionally, the tool may not always be able to understand complex essay prompts or provide relevant and insightful analysis, which can limit its usefulness as a writing assistant.

Limitations and Drawbacks

IT is important to consider the limitations and drawbacks of Essay Bot when evaluating its effectiveness. The tool may struggle with more specific or technical essay topics, and IT may not be suitable for advanced academic writing . Additionally, the reliance on AI and machine learning means that Essay Bot may not always be able to capture the nuance and depth required for high-quality academic writing .

Furthermore, some users have expressed concerns about the lack of human oversight and the potential for bias or inaccuracies in the content generated by Essay Bot. This raises questions about the ethical and academic implications of using such a tool for essay writing .

Overall, our review of Essay Bot has highlighted several concerns about its accuracy and reliability as a writing tool. While the tool has the potential to assist students with essay writing , IT may not always produce accurate and credible content , and IT may struggle with more complex writing tasks. IT is important for students to critically evaluate the content generated by Essay Bot and to use the tool as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, their own research and writing skills.

Is Essay Bot a reliable tool for academic writing ?

While Essay Bot can be a convenient tool for generating essay content , its reliability for academic writing is questionable. The accuracy of the content and the reliance on potentially unreliable sources are major concerns that students should consider.

Can Essay Bot help with organizing and refining an essay?

Essay Bot may be limited in its ability to provide comprehensive support for organizing and refining an essay. While IT can help with generating content , IT may not offer the depth and insight required for advanced academic writing .

How should students use Essay Bot effectively?

Students should use Essay Bot as a supplementary tool for essay writing , rather than relying solely on its content . IT is important to critically evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the content generated and to use IT as a starting point for further research and writing .

AI bot ChatGPT stuns academics with essay-writing skills and usability

Latest chatbot from Elon Musk-founded OpenAI can identify incorrect premises and refuse to answer inappropriate requests

Professors, programmers and journalists could all be out of a job in just a few years, after the latest chatbot from the Elon Musk-founded OpenAI foundation stunned onlookers with its writing ability, proficiency at complex tasks, and ease of use.

The system, called ChatGPT, is the latest evolution of the GPT family of text-generating AIs. Two years ago, the team’s previous AI, GPT3, was able to generate an opinion piece for the Guardian , and ChatGPT has significant further capabilities.

In the days since it was released, academics have generated responses to exam queries that they say would result in full marks if submitted by an undergraduate, and programmers have used the tool to solve coding challenges in obscure programming languages in a matter of seconds – before writing limericks explaining the functionality.

Dan Gillmor, a journalism professor at Arizona State University, asked the AI to handle one of the assignments he gives his students: writing a letter to a relative giving advice regarding online security and privacy. “If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a website or email, you can do a quick search to see if others have reported it as being a scam,” the AI advised in part.

“I would have given this a good grade,” Gillmor said. “Academia has some very serious issues to confront.”

OpenAI said the new AI was created with a focus on ease of use. “The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests,” OpenAI said in a post announcing the release.

Unlike previous AI from the company, ChatGPT has been released for anyone to use , for free, during a “feedback” period. The company hopes to use this feedback to improve the final version of the tool.

ChatGPT is good at self-censoring, and at realising when it is being asked an impossible question. Asked, for instance, to describe what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2015, older models may have willingly presented an entirely fictitious account, but ChatGPT recognises the falsehood and warns that any answer would be fictional.

The bot is also capable of refusing to answer queries altogether. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example, and the bot will say that “stealing a car is a serious crime that can have severe consequences”, and instead give advice such as “using public transportation”.

But the limits are easy to evade. Ask the AI instead for advice on how to beat the car-stealing mission in a fictional VR game called Car World and it will merrily give users detailed guidance on how to steal a car, and answer increasingly specific questions on problems like how to disable an immobiliser, how to hotwire the engine, and how to change the licence plates – all while insisting that the advice is only for use in the game Car World.

The AI is trained on a huge sample of text taken from the internet, generally without explicit permission from the authors of the material used. That has led to controversy, with some arguing that the technology is most useful for “copyright laundering” – making works derivative of existing material without breaking copyright.

One unusual critic was Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before parting ways in 2017 due to conflicts of interest between the organisation and Tesla. In a post on Twitter on Sunday , Musk revealed that the organisation “had access to [the] Twitter database for training”, but that he had “put that on pause for now”.

“Need to understand more about governance structure & revenue plans going forward,” Musk added. “OpenAI was started as open-source & non-profit. Neither are still true.”

what is essay bot

“EssayBot is the highly acclaimed online platform giving essay writing assistance to students and subject authors. As the program has been produced with the most sophisticated tools and technologies, it is extremely automated and individualized. This US-based corporation works with the only purpose to give honest and convincing aid to authors for creating superior volumes that will get rewards and praises.”

That’s what EssayBot says when I asked it to describe itself. The service aims to be the holy grail for the world’s burnout 11th-graders. Type in your prompt — any prompt, from your history assignment to the question “what is EssayBot?” — and the machines get to work.

Your opening paragraph is pulled whole cloth from a database of scholastic material. Then the diction is gently rephrased, with synonyms swapped in for non-essential words, until it can fly under the radar of the average plagiarism detector. From there, you can import a laundry list of additional paragraphs related to the subject of your essay, or you can use a drop-down menu called a “sentence creator,” perched patiently next to your blinking cursor. Write a word and EssayBot does its best to think up a sensible follow-up clause, based on the contours and language of what you’ve already got written down. All this for only $9.95 a month, or $49.95 a year. If you’ve ever spent a sleepless school night staring at an empty Word doc, you know what it’s like to be desperate enough to pay up.

I discovered EssayBot via YouTube ad, and when I put the site’s name into Google, I found hundreds of cautiously hopeful students taking to forums and review sites over the past year, asking if EssayBot is too good to be true. Procrastinating teens are an underserved market.

Aaron Yin, the proprietor of EssayBot, has been trying to sell AI text generation for years with limited success. His first attempt came in 2017 with a service that automatically constructed résumés, and the tech infrastructure of EssayBot was initially intended to help small businesses generate branding copy. But that angle never took off. Instead, Yin needed to find a hungrier demographic, and the millions of young men and women on a humanities deadline were a match made in heaven. “We use the same technology [from the business writing] for EssayBot,” he says. “To help students write essays.”

Yin considers EssayBot to be a streamlined version of what kids are already doing with their papers. He tells me he held focus groups full of college kids during EssayBot’s initial development and found that they all used similar tactics to write their essays. They would research and copy down the finer points of the arguments they wanted to use, they would reword those passages, and they turned to Google Scholar to find citations. If you’re extremely generous in your interpretation, you can argue that EssayBot is essentially a harmless mechanization of the academic process — rather than, you know, cheating. “The technology is actually a little similar to translation,” says Yin. “You’re putting something in a different way.”

There’s reason to believe what Yin is selling. In 2019, AI text generation is closer to the mainstream than ever. In February, there was a brief mania over the Elon Musk-backed company OpenAI and its silver-tongued text generator. Journalists from Wired , the Guardian , The Verge , and Vox were all invited to play with the fancy new algorithm that could generate cohesive short stories with reasonably consistent clarity. The generator has yet to be released to the public, with OpenAI claiming that it was “too dangerous” in our current Facebook-poisoned news culture. No matter how hyperbolic that warning might be, it seemed we were fast approaching a world where machines could demand column space.

It’s a reality echoed by Neil Yager, the chief scientist and co-founder of Phrasee , an AI platform that formulates ideal, scientifically precise email headlines for press releases and marketing campaigns. He says that whether we realize it or not, we’re already reading a fair amount of computer-generated text as part of our media diet. “In things like weather reports, it’s called data to text. You take some numbers, like the humidity and temperature, and use an algorithm to automatically to spin that into a story,” he explains. “You have some simple logic in there. ‘If the temperature is above this, then say that it’s going to be a warm day.’ Robo-journalism is quite a big field.”

Still, it was difficult to believe that technology could adequately replicate a standard five-paragraph high school essay. Sure, EssayBot was able to introduce itself in its own uncanny syntax, but that was easy. How would it hold up in the eyes of a wary teacher? So I got my hands dirty in the EssayBot module and resolved to craft an essay about Brown v. Board of Education , a Supreme Court case any American student will inevitably write about at least once during their academic career.

EssayBot gave me a rock-solid opening paragraph, after which I was presented with a suite of additional paragraphs I could plug into the copy. As before, each of those paragraphs was plucked from the web and rephrased into something less plagiaristic by the site’s algorithm. I continued that process until I had about 700 words that tracked the basics of the trial and some light analysis about segregation in the public school system today. The results were uneven. The language and the facts were mostly reasonable, but the overall narrative was jumbled. The essay wasn’t tethered to a concrete thesis and read like a loose distillation dreamed up by an entity that knew all the information but wasn’t able to synthesize it into an authentic argument.

I decided to use the automatic sentence creator to fill out the conclusion, where things got funnier, and more dire. The sentences themselves were grammatically correct, but they’d often contradict each other within the text. At one point, EssayBot wanted to add “the solution is to change the way schools are run,” exactly one sentence after it added “the solution isn’t to simply change the way schools are run.” It figures that when you ask something non-sentient to write for you, you can expect something non-sentient in return.

So, naturally, when I emailed the essay to my 10th-grade history teacher Mr. Lourey, he gave it an easy F.

”The paper would probably earn a very low score in most classes, because it doesn’t seem to be clearly answering a prompt,” he wrote. “I guess if a teacher assigned a short essay that asked students to simply summarize an event, then maybe this type of paper could fly under the ‘teacher radar.’ But most properly designed writing prompts on civil rights would ask students to make some sort of original claim … even if I did not identify the paper as a creation of AI, it would earn a failing grade.”

His reaction didn’t surprise me, nor did it surprise Yager. An AI text generator like EssayBot is simply incapable of responding to a multifaceted essay proposal with a human point of view. Your best bet is simulacrum, and simulacrum can break down very, very quickly. In fact, Yager says Phrasee’s AI model starts to degenerate after about 150 words or so.

Algorithms “don’t write like how you or I would write an essay. It doesn’t think, ‘Okay, here’s my idea, and here’s how I’m going to argue this point.’ Instead, it’s writing one word at a time with no idea where it’s going,” he explains. “There’s no understanding there. It’s not trying to get any point across; any point it makes is purely random and accidental. That’s the limitation of the technology today. … It studies the statistical properties of the language and can generate new text that shares those properties.”

That said, Yager is a little concerned about the future. As tools like EssayBot get better and more AI software hits the market, there will eventually come a moment, he says, where text generation will be a major concern for academia. “Technology is going to help people cheat. It’ll be a bit of an arms race. Things will improve over time, and so will the detection methods,” he says. “Even now, though it’s not great quality, I bet people are getting away with it.”

Yin, of course, would never call EssayBot software for cheaters, and he says that over the past year, he’s only ever gotten one angry email from a teacher. He points to a service called Chegg , which provides specific answers to classroom textbook questions for $15 a month. EssayBot, in his comparison, is a research tool rather than a flat, rote cheat sheet. A shortcut rather than misconduct.

”A student could use Chegg [to answer a problem,] and after graduation, if they saw a similar question, they still couldn’t do it,” says Yin. “With EssayBot, after graduation, if a student became a marketing specialist and write marketing material, they could still use EssayBot.”

Perhaps one day we might need to formally establish the parameters for how much a robot is allowed to assist you in the writing process. Until then, be careful with the machines. They might just flunk you.

What Is Essay Bot? AIs Writing an Essay for You Might Not Be Safe

what is essay bot

Writing essays isn’t many people’s favorite part of studying for a qualification, but it’s necessary. Or is it? If you’ve ever sat in front of a computer and felt like you didn’t know where to start, you might have been tempted to get Essay Bot to do the work for you. Before you search for it, here is what you should be aware of.

What is Essay Bot?

Essay Bot is just one of many AI services which are on the increase. The Essay Bot website claims to have an inbuilt plagiarism checker, so you might think this is a positive aspect. However, the unlimited search database is basically information already available on the internet. The site states that the bot searches millions of websites and provides the most relevant information. This all sounds good, perhaps too good.

Is Essay Bot Safe?

Essay Bot might be okay if you just want to create a piece of writing which isn’t related to college work, or for some offline material that isn’t going to be published online and get you into trouble. However, it’s too risky for college work. The software just seems to rewrite content that is already online, and it doesn’t always do this well.

Of course, you could rewrite the text in a way that makes more sense to your essay and addresses the points you want to make, but there are several downsides to this.

You could spend more time rewriting than you would if you simply wrote the complete essay yourself. You may also end up plagiarizing someone else’s work during the rewrites. It’s likely that the words Essay Bot provides are a rearrangement of content already available, and in an attempt to make more sense, you accidentally rewrite some of the text it was taken from.

You could invest in high-quality plagiarism software to prevent this, but is it really worth the cost and the extra time of tweaking and rewriting until the essay becomes completely unique?

Probably not.

Can You Get in Trouble for Using Essay Bot?

what is essay bot

Yes, you could get in trouble for using Essay Bot if your tutor or anyone else at your college found out.

Most colleges will use a plagiarism checker and if your essay fails this, you will put your place at risk. Each college or university will have different rules, but you could fail the essay, be made to redo the module or lose your place on the course. Education is not cheap, so it doesn’t seem worth the risk.

Even if you manage to craft your bot-written essay into something unique that also makes sense, getting someone to write your essay for you is still cheating. The writer being a bot doesn’t change that.

The easy way to determine if something is wrong is if you ask yourself whether you would admit to your tutor how you crafted your essay. If you wouldn’t tell them, you’re probably breaking the rules and could get into serious trouble if found out.

what is essay bot

In a world filled to the brim with technology and innovation, Artificial Intelligence plays a big role. Humans can think like no other being, and we are trying to instil this human quality in machines. And that is Artificial Intelligence.

With technology booming at a rate like no other time, Artificial Intelligence is also improving greatly. Machines are used almost everywhere; operating on algorithms and performing tasks at a faster rate than humans. But, then a new question arises. Is Artificial Intelligence a boon for humanity? Or is it a bane?

Artificial Intelligence has long since been seen as a testimony to the world’s technological prowess and development. It is less prone to make mistakes and much faster than humans. But unlike humans, who have a complex thinking system, they operate solely on algorithms instilled in them. Hence, A.I. cannot adapt to different situations. This can be an obstacle when new situations are presented in front of the machine.

Artificial Intelligence has assisted humans in the most various industries by performing tasks in a much quicker and efficient way. Being able to think rationally and to predict future events by analysing data from the past, these systems have revolutionized day-to-day life. However, they are unable to develop intrinsic human abilities such as showing emotions and thinking about changing situations. Therefore, systems like EssayBot, which write essays related to a theme and perspective defined, cannot completely substitute humans. Essay writing, as mentioned by its definition, requires a personal perspective from events. Having this in mind, essay writing is an ability that can only be performed at its greatest potential if done by humans, who are able to share personal opinions and emotions.  Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean such technology isn’t important and helpful when not even humans can access what they would wish to write.

Some students may be confused or even have difficulty in making assignments, one of which is an essay assignment. Most of them run out of ideas so they are confused about what to write. To write an essay, ideally we have to do it manually and observe something first-hand. However, the more sophisticated technology is, now there is no need to be confused anymore because there is technology that can help students make essays quickly and easily, with the help of bots. There are many essay writing bots found on the internet, one of which is the essay bot.

Essay bot is a technology in the form of applications and websites. This technology can help and facilitate students in making or compiling essays. With state-of-the-art technology, this essay bot can create or produce non-market and highly varied writings. This essay bot can also be accessed via Android, iPhone or PC (Laptop and Computer). This essay bot offers several services to its users, among others, first this bot will find the source of the article, then suggest sentences or paragraphs, and compose complete sentences using artificial intelligence. This essay bot will also reduce the level of plagiarism by paraphrasing every sentence. And not only that, this essay bot also contains excerpts from the essays of its users.

The essay bot is mostly used by teenagers, especially students, therefore this bot is designed very simply and is quite easy to use. Users only need to type what they want to write in the form of sentences or questions, they can also directly type in the topic or title of the essay that will be made and the bot will work. The bot will display the first few paragraphs of the essay that will be recommended to the user and the user just needs to determine the first paragraph.

Usually the initial paragraph will be taken from a paraphrased scientific reference database to avoid plagiarism. However, this technology still has to involve its users to compose an essay. Users must add a few paragraphs that are still related to the topic of the essay. But just by typing a word, this bot will offer alternative sentences that can be connected with previous sentences. However, because today’s technology is also increasingly sophisticated, there is a possibility that the paragraph may still contain plagiarism even though it has been paraphrased.

Reporting from Vox, Aaron Yin, the creator of Essay Bot said that the working system of this bot is actually almost similar to a translator. So he claims that using Essay Bot is not cheating. This bot only provides alternative sentences and helps find several sources that can be used by its users.

Although it offers several conveniences, this bot also has several weaknesses including, the resulting sentences sometimes do not match so it is confusing, and makes the sentences become disconnected when combined with the previous paragraph. This is because bots are not able to make the right argument or narrative to frame the essay. So the resulting points are contradictory.

In addition, to get more access users must register first. And in order to be able to download the essays that have been compiled, users are also required to subscribe and are subject to a subscription fee. The subscription fee is around 9.95 USD or the equivalent of 144 thousand rupiah per month. Or if you want to be more efficient, Essay Bot also provides a year-long subscription package, which is priced at 49.95 USD or the equivalent of 722 thousand rupiah.

In conclusion, this essay bot is quite helpful for students and makes it easier for them to compose essays. But don’t expect too high, because this is just a bot, not a professional academic service. With these weaknesses, the resulting essays are of low quality. It is better for users to reconsider using the bot in making essays. Because it is possible that the essays that are arranged are not perfect or even do not match the topic you are looking for.

In addition, it is very unfortunate if you have to subscribe and spend money but the results are not appropriate. It is better to compile essays manually by pouring all the ideas we have and developing them. There are several sites and applications that can help us in compiling essays so that our essay results are maximized, including Cambridge Dictionary, Thesaurus, Microsoft Dictionary, Worldref, or even Google Translate. And to check the accuracy of the grammar, you can use the Grammarly application which can also be accessed through the website.

In short, Artificial Intelligence has both advantages and disadvantages. It is faster, more mistake free and efficient that humans, and does not need rest and is used in a variety of fields for various purposes. But at the same time creates unemployment problems and does not possess the same emotions and intelligence as humans. But, if we learn to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence properly, then it can be used to our advantage and help humans progress at a terrifying rate never seen before.

“Artificial Intelligence is about replacing human decision making with more sophisticated technologies.”

what is essay bot

Since the launch of ChatGPT , AI chatbots have been all of the rage because of their ability to do a wide range of tasks that can help you with your personal and work life. At your command, AI chatbots can write code , compose emails, draft a report,  generate art ,  write Excel formulas for you , and much more.

However, because ChatGPT  reached worldwide recognition , competitors were motivated to make their own versions, and, as a result, there are so many options on the market to choose from with different strengths, use cases, difficulty levels, and other nuances.

Also: The best AI image generators: Tested and reviewed

For the last year and a half, I have taken a deep dive into AI and have tested as many AI tools as possible -- including dozens of AI chatbots. Using my findings and those of other ZDNET AI experts, I have created a list of the best AI chatbots and AI writers on the market.

The list details everything you need to know before choosing your next AI assistant, including what it's best for, pros, cons, cost, its large language model (LLM), and more. So whether you are entirely new to AI chatbots, or have used plenty of tools, this list should help you discover a new chatbot you haven't used before.

What is the best AI chatbot right now?

Thanks to its sourcing abilities, free internet access, and advanced LLM model, Microsoft Copilot is my choice for the best AI chatbot. Keep reading to see how its features compare to others like ChatGPT, You.com, and more.

The best AI chatbots of 2024

Microsoft copilot, best ai chatbot overall.

  • Access to the internet
  • Links back to sources
  • Uses OpenAI's most advanced LLM
  • Grounded in Bing

In February last year, Microsoft unveiled a new AI-improved Bing, now known as Copilot, which runs on GPT-4  Turbo, the newest version of OpenAI's language model systems. As of May 4 of last year, Copilot moved from limited to open preview, meaning everyone can access it for free.

Also: What is Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)? Here's everything you need to know

When I use a chatbot, I typically reach for Copilot because it solves two major issues with ChatGPT: access to current events and linking back to the sources it retrieved for its answer for free. Copilot is also the only way to access OpenAI's most advanced LLM -- GPT-4 Turbo -- for free.

Copilot is free to use and offers other features that make it an attractive alternative, including multi-modal inputs, image generation within the chatbot, and a standalone app.

Copilot f eatures:  OpenAI's most advanced LLM, GPT-4 Turbo | Has access to the internet | Works like a search engine with information on current events | Free

Best original AI chatbot

  • Writing skills
  • STEM knowledge
  • Conversational
  • Not always available
  • Not connected to the internet

ChatGPT is a conversational AI chatbot  by OpenAI that can produce text based on any prompt you input, generating emails, essays, poems, grocery lists, letters, and much more.

In addition to writing for you, ChatGPT can chat about simple or complex topics such as "What are colors?" or "What is the meaning of life?" ChatGPT is also proficient in STEM and can write and debug code  and solve complex math equations.

Using ChatGPT is easier than ever since OpenAI stopped requiring users to log in . Now, you can start chatting with ChatGPT simply by visiting its website like you would with Google.

Also:  How to use ChatGPT

ChatGPT was released in November 2022, and because of its  massive success , it became the blueprint for many other chatbots to enter the scene. Therefore, if you are interested in AI chatbots, you'll likely want to try the original tool that began the craze -- ChatGPT.

Downsides of the chatbot include that it is sometimes at capacity due to its immense popularity, doesn't have access to the internet, and has a January 2022 knowledge cutoff.

I still reach for ChatGPT because, despite its limitations, it is an incredibly capable chatbot. However, when I do, I ensure my queries do not rely on the most recent information to be accurate. For example, some good use cases to use ChatGPT for are brainstorming text or coding.

ChatGPT features:  Uses OpenAI's GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 (if subscribed) | Can generate text, solve math problems, and code | Impressive conversation capabilities | Free to the public right now

Anthrophic's Claude

Best ai chatbot for summarizing documents.

  • Upload document support
  • Chat controls
  • Light and dark mode
  • Unclear usage cap
  • Knowledge cutoff

Anthropic launched its first AI assistant, Claude, in February 2023. Now the tool has secured a spot as one of the best chatbots. Like the other leading competitors, Anthropic can conversationally answer prompts for anything you need assistance with, including coding, math, writing, research, and more.

Also: 4 things Claude AI can do that ChatGPT can't

I think the biggest advantage of this chatbot is that it can accept document uploads to help read, analyze, and summarize files. To upload a file, click on the paper clip icon next to the text box and click on the document you want to upload. Then, conversationally ask for help you want with the document, including document summaries or clarifications on specific topics found within the document.

Also: This free tool from Anthropic helps you create better prompts for your AI chatbot

Claude is in free open beta and, as a result, has both context window and daily message limits that can vary based on demand. If you want to use the chatbot regularly, upgrading to Claude Pro may be a better option, as it offers at least five times the usage limits compared to the free version for $20 a month.

Claude features:   Powered by Claude 3 model family | Accepts document uploads | Trained with information up to early 2023 | Free

Perplexity.ai

The best ai chatbot for prompt ideation.

  • Links to sources
  • Access to internet
  • Paid subscription required for GPT-4 access
  • some irrelevant suggestions

Perplexity AI is a free AI chatbot connected to the internet that provides sources and has an enjoyable UI. As soon as you visit the site , using the chatbot is straightforward. Type your prompt into the "ask anything" box to get started. The first time I visited this chatbot, I was able to get started within seconds.

On top of the text box, the chatbot states, "Where knowledge begins," and the title could not be more fitting.

As soon as you click on the textbox, the tool has a series of suggested prompts mostly rooted in news. The chatbot also has suggested prompts underneath the box on evergreen topics. All you have to do is click on the suggestions to learn more about the topic and chat about it. Additionally, Perplexity provides related topic questions you can click on to keep the conversation going.

Also:  ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini: Which is the best AI chatbot?

Because of the extensive prompts that the tool gives users to try, this is a great chatbot for taking deep dives into topics that you wouldn't have necessarily thought of before, encouraging discovery and experimentation. I dived into some random topics, including the history of birthday cakes, and I enjoyed every second.

Other perks include the fact that there is an app for both iOS and Android, allowing you to also tinker with the chatbot while you're on the go, footnotes are provided after every answer with sources you can visit, and the answers from the chatbot nearly always include photos and graphics.

Perplexity AI features:  OpenAI GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 for subscribers | Has access to the internet and current events | Provides prompt suggestions to get chats started | Free

Best AI chatbot for businesses and marketers

  • 50 different writing templates
  • Copyediting features
  • Plagiarism checker
  • Need a subscription to try

Jasper is a tool exclusively meant for users looking to incorporate an AI chatbot into their workflow because there is no free plan and you can't otherwise access the chatbot. For example, when I tried using it myself, I was met with dead ends unless I subscribed. The least expensive option, the Creator plan, is geared towards freelancers and solo-preneurs and is $49 a month. However, the investment may be worth it if you rely on an AI chatbot to generate copy for your business.

Also: ChatGPT vs. Copilot: Which AI chatbot is better for you?

With Jasper, you can input a prompt for what you want written, and it will write it for you, just like ChatGPT would. The major difference with Jasper is that it has extensive tools to produce better copy. Jasper can check for grammar and plagiarism and write in over 50 templates, including blog posts, Twitter threads, video scripts, and more. It also offers SEO insights and can even remember your brand voice.

Whether you are an individual, part of a smaller team, or in a larger business looking to optimize your workflow, you can access a trial or demo before you take the plunge.

Jasper features:  Uses different LLMs, including GPT-4 | Summarizes texts and generates paragraphs and product descriptions | Checks for plagiarism and grammar | Starts at $39 per month with an annual subscription

Best AI chatbot that functions as a search engine

  • Readily available
  • Source Citing
  • Some answers stronger than others
  • Subscription required for GPT-4 access

You.com (previously known as YouChat) is an AI assistant that functions similarly to a search engine. Like Google, you can enter any question or topic you'd like to learn information on, and immediately be met with real-time web results, in addition to a conversational response.

Also: YouPro lets me access every popular premium AI chatbot for $20/month - but there's a catch

For example, when I asked, "Can you share some pictures of adorable dog breeds?" the chatbot provided six different web links, seven different pictures it pulled from the web, a conversational answer, and related news, as seen in the photo.

The chatbot can also provide technical assistance, with answers to anything you input, including math, coding, translating, and writing prompts. A huge pro for this chatbot is that, because it lacks popularity, you can hop on any time and ask away.

One of the biggest standout features is that with YouPro, its premium subscription, you can toggle between the most popular AI models on the market using the Custom Model Selector.

The AI models included in Custom Model Selector include OpenAI's GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo; Anthropic's Claude Instant, Claude 2, Claude 3 Opus, Clause 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Haiku; Google's Gemini Pro; and Zephyr (uncensored).

That means that, within one chatbot, you can experience some of the most advanced models on the market, which is pretty convenient if you ask me.

You.com features:  GPT-4 with subscription | Lists sources for the text it generates | Unlike most other Chatbots, uses Google sources | Free

Chatsonic by Writesonic

Best ai chatbot for article writers.

  • Variety of use cases
  • Need to sign in
  • A bit of a lag

Chatsonic is a dependable AI chatbot. It functions much like ChatGPT, allowing users to input prompts for assistance on many tasks. However, it includes the ability to web search, generate images, and access PDF assistance, which ChatGPT lacks.

The Writesonic platform offers tools that help generate stories, including Instant Article Writer, which creates an article from a single click; Article Rewriter, which rephrases existing content; and Article Writer 5, which generates articles using ranking competitors.

Other tools that facilitate the creation of articles include SEO Checker and Optimizer, AI Editor, Content Rephraser, Paragraph Writer, and more. There is a free version, which gets you access to some of the features. However, the free version has a 50 generations per day limit. The monthly cost starts at $12 but can reach $250, depending on the number of words and users needed.

Chatsonic features:  Powered by GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 depending on subscription | Aware of current events, whereas ChatGPT is trained up to 2021 | Extensive feature suite, including voice dictation and image generation | Starts at $12 per month

Gemini (formerly Google Bard)

Best ai chatbot if you're a loyal google user.

  • Access to Google
  • Good text editing skills
  • Can't help much with code

Gemini is Google's conversational AI chatbot that functions the most similarly to Copilot, sourcing its answers from the web, providing footnotes, and even generating images within its chatbot. Since its initial release in March 2023, the chatbot has undergone several upgrades, with the latest version being the most optimized it has ever been.

Also: What is Google's Gemini AI tool (formerly Bard)? Everything you need to know

The highlight of this chatbot is that it is rooted in Google technology, search engines, and applications. Loyal Google users will feel familiar with the chatbot's UI and offerings. For example, unlike most of the chatbots on this list, Google does not use an LLM in the GPT series but instead uses a model made by Google.

"Gemini is slowly becoming a full Google experience thanks to Extensions folding the wide range of Google applications into Gemini," said ZDNET writer Maria Diaz when reviewing the chatbot. "Gemini users can add extensions for Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Flights, and Google Hotels, giving them a more personalized and extensive experience."

If you subscribe to Google's new 'AI Premium Plan' , you not only get access to the most advanced Google models in Gemini, such as Ultra 1.0, but you also get access to Gemini for Workspace, previously known as  Duet AI,  which infuses Google's AI assistance throughout its productivity apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet.

Gemini features:  Powered by a finetuned version of Gemini Pro | Includes a "Google it" feature | Generates clear text and images quickly | Free

Socratic by Google

Best ai chatbot for kids and students.

  • Educational
  • Easy to use
  • Doesn't write text
  • No desktop version

If you want your child to use AI to lighten their workload, but still have some limits, Socratic is for you. With Socratic, children can type in any question about what they learn in school. The tool will then generate a conversational, human-like response with fun, unique graphics to help break down the concept.

"It's a powerful studying tool that could help students double-check their homework, or get across the last hurdle if a question or formula just isn't making sense. And using the app is as easy as using  Snapchat  or talking to Siri," said former ZDNET contributor Jason Cipriani, when reviewing the app.

Also: How Google Socratic can help you with your homework

The app, available on the App Store and the Google App Store, also has a feature that lets your kid scan their worksheet to get a specially curated answer. The app does have some limitations; for example, it will not just write an essay or story when prompted. However, this feature could be positive because it curbs your child's temptation to get a chatbot, like ChatGPT, to write their essay.

Socratic features:  From Google | Type in any question to generate a response | Includes fun graphics | Supports scanning worksheets to get a specially curated answer | Free

HuggingChat

Best open-source chatbot.

  • Cutomizable
  • Intermediate/advanced skills requires
  • Required to create an account

As seen by the list above, plenty of great chatbot options are on the market. However, if you are on the search for a chatbot that serves your use case specifically, you can always build an entirely customizable new one. HuggingChat is an open-source chatbot developed by Hugging Face that can be used as a regular chatbot or customized for your needs.

Also :  Want to build your own AI chatbot? Say hello to open-source HuggingChat

As ZDNET's David Gewirtz unpacked in his hands-on article , you may not want to depend on HuggingChat as your go-to primary chatbot. However, it is a good interface to build your own chatbot.

As Gewirtz said: "If you want something that you control, you can use HuggingChat to build a chatbot where you have visibility into every aspect of its functioning. You can choose to make that chatbot available online to other users and provide transparency to all users."

Socratic features:  Clean, Chat-GPT inspired interface | Entirely customizable | Great for developers or AI fanatics | Secure alternative | Free

What is the best AI chatbot?

The best overall AI chatbot is Copilot due to its exceptional performance, versatility, and free availability. It uses OpenAI's cutting-edge GPT-4 language model, making it proficient in various language tasks, including writing, summarization, translation, and conversation. Moreover, it works like a search engine with information on current events.

Another advantage of Copilot is its availability to the public at no cost. Despite its immense popularity, Copilot remains free, making it an incredible resource for students, writers, and professionals who need a reliable and free AI chatbot.

Although there are occasional capacity blocks, OpenAI is working on releasing a professional version of ChatGPT that will be quicker and always accessible at a monthly cost.

Which AI chatbot is right for you?

While Copliot is my personal favorite, your use case may be hyper-specific or have certain demands. If you need a constant, reliable AI chatbot, other alternatives might be better suited for you. If you want an AI chatbot that produces clean, reliable, business-ready copy, for example, then Jasper is for you. If you want to play around with an AI chatbot that isn't always at capacity, YouChat might be the best option.

Lastly, if there is a child in your life, Socratic might be worth checking out. See our breakdown below:

Factors to consider when choosing a chatbot

Since there are so many chatbots on the market, picking the right one can get confusing. Some factors to consider to help narrow down those options are:

  • Large Language Model (LLM)
  • Knowledge cutoff
  • Access to the internet
  • Linking to sources
  • Best use cases

How did I choose these AI chatbots?

To curate the list of best AI chatbots and AI writers, I looked at the capabilities of each program, including the individual uses each program would excel at. As an AI reporter, I was also sure to test each one myself. Other factors I looked at were reliability, availability, and cost.

  • Individual use case: AI chatbots have many use cases, often acting as a tool for productivity and easier workflow. I included a variety that can serve as ideation, education, and content creation tools.
  • Reliability: I kept information accuracy a priority during my testing.
  • Availability : ChatGPT is popular, but not always available. I selected alternatives that don't have a user limit and are available at all times.
  • Cost: Many of these AI programs are free, but some require monthly memberships. I included a mix of both, keeping budget-friendliness in mind.

What is an AI chatbot?

An AI chatbot (also called AI writer) refers to a type of artificial intelligence-powered program capable of generating written content from a user's input prompt. AI chatbots can write anything from a rap song to an essay upon a user's request. The extent of what each chatbot can write about depends on its capabilities, including whether it is connected to a search engine.

How do AI chatbots work?

AI chatbots use language models to train the AI to produce human-like responses. Some tools are connected to the web and that capability provides up-to-date information, while others depend solely on the information upon which they are trained.

How much do AI chatbots cost?

AI chatbot programs vary in cost with some being entirely free and others costing as much as $600 a month. Many like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and YouChat are free to use.

What is the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer?

The main difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer is the type of output they generate and their primary function.

In the past, an AI writer was used specifically to generate written content, such as articles, stories, or poetry, based on a given prompt or input. An AI writer's output is in the form of written text that mimics human-like language and structure. On the other hand, an AI chatbot is designed to conduct real-time conversations with users in text or voice-based interactions. The primary function of an AI chatbot is to answer questions, provide recommendations, or even perform simple tasks, and its output is in the form of text-based conversations.

While the terms AI chatbot and AI writer are now used interchangeably by some, the original distinction was that an AI writer was used for generating written content while an AI chatbot was used for conversational purposes. However, with the introduction of more advanced AI technology, such as ChatGPT, the line between the two has become increasingly blurred. Some AI chatbots are now capable of generating text-based responses that mimic human-like language and structure, similar to an AI writer.

GPT Essay Checker for Students

How to Interpret the Result of AI Detection

To use our GPT checker, you won’t need to do any preparation work!

Take the 3 steps:

  • Copy and paste the text you want to be analyzed,
  • Click the button,
  • Follow the prompts to interpret the result.

Our AI detector doesn’t give a definitive answer. It’s only a free beta test that will be improved later. For now, it provides a preliminary conclusion and analyzes the provided text, implementing the color-coding system that you can see above the analysis.

It is you who decides whether the text is written by a human or AI:

  • Your text was likely generated by an AI if it is mostly red with some orange words. This means that the word choice of the whole document is nowhere near unique or unpredictable.
  • Your text looks unique and human-made if our GPT essay checker adds plenty of orange, green, and blue to the color palette.

Over the first week of its functioning, the program exceeded 1 million users . Therefore, developers are interested in monetizing it, and launching a paid Beta-version won’t take long.

We prefer not to throw out compliments to the chatbot and instead let you check for yourself . It is a chat with AI. The best way to start is to ask a question. It is free so far (still under research), so you can ask as many questions as you please.

We should care about AI-generated content because, in a decade, it will be an everyday reality. Even more so, it is a hot-button issue now. For now, GPT 3 can’t replace human writers. However, AI essay detection has already become an issue for teachers.

You can try asking ChatGPT to write an essay for you. But we do not recommend pass it off as written by you. Not only because it's unethical (although it is). The fact is that ChatGPT has a number of drawbacks that you need to consider before using it.

Chat GPT in Essay Writing – the Shortcomings

  • The tool doesn’t know anything about what happened after 2021. Novel history is not its strong side. Sometimes it needs to be corrected about earlier events. For instance, request information about Heathrow Terminal 1 . The program will tell you it is functioning, although it has been closed since 2015.
  • The reliability of answers is questionable. AI takes information from the web which abounds in fake news, bias, and conspiracy theories.
  • References also need to be checked. The links that the tool generates are sometimes incorrect, and sometimes even fake.
  • Two AI generated essays on the same topic can be very similar. Although a plagiarism checker will likely consider the texts original, your teacher will easily see the same structure and arguments.
  • Chat GPT essay detectors are being actively developed now. Traditional plagiarism checkers are not good at finding texts made by ChatGPT. But this does not mean that an AI-generated piece cannot be detected at all.

🕵 How Do GPT Checkers Work?

An AI-generated text is too predictable. Its creation is based on the word frequency in each particular case.

Thus, its strong side (being life-like) makes it easily discernible for ChatGPT detectors.

Once again, conventional anti-plagiarism essay checkers won’t work there merely because this writing features originality. Meanwhile, it will be too similar to hundreds of other texts covering the same topic.

Here’s an everyday example. Two people give birth to a baby. When kids become adults, they are very much like their parents. But can we tell this particular human is a child of the other two humans? No, if we cannot make a genetic test. This GPT essay checker is a paternity test for written content.

How to use Meta’s new AI chatbot that you can’t avoid

Facebook, instagram, messenger and whatsapp are all pushing a new ai chatbot.

what is essay bot

With seemingly fewer friends posting to their main Facebook and Instagram feeds, Meta has introduced a new feature its users can talk to: an AI chatbot.

The feature, named Meta AI, is rolling out to the company’s main apps including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. It’s primarily a conversational chat window where you can ask questions and generate AI images, similar to other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and Google’s Gemini.

Despite over a year of artificial intelligence being everywhere, this could be many people’s first interaction with the technology. Meta has billions of users across its apps, and anyone who has managed to avoid the bots so far will find this one nearly impossible to escape.

Should you trust that AI?

Why is this ai chatbot here.

Facebook and Instagram users probably weren’t banging down Mark Zuckerberg’s door demanding an AI chatbot, so why is this feature suddenly everywhere? The technology is still new and its utility debatable. However, the major tech companies have decided that, like voice assistants and scrollable vertical videos before it, AI is the next big thing. Now they are competing to push out their versions. Facebook and Instagram used to rely on users’ friends, family and communities to keep their attention. Now, as these platforms are aging, the companies may hope a chatty bot can replace some of the human interaction.

How do I find it?

The chatbot is integrated in search and messaging features across Meta’s apps, and may appear in your feed under some posts as well. If you don’t see the AI features it yet, check back later. Its presence is marked with its logo: a thin ring that’s mostly blue and occasionally animated. The AI tool can also be accessed online on the stand-alone website meta.ai . It is not included in the company’s app for children, Messenger Kids.

On Facebook, tap the search icon on top and you’ll find that the usual search bar has been replaced with one that says, “Ask Meta AI anything.” As you start typing, it will auto-suggest searches. Anything with the blue circle next to it is going to bring up the AI chat window. You can also tap the messages icon and engage with Meta AI as if it’s another pal to talk to. If you see it under a post in your feed, it will suggest questions to ask related to the content you see.

In Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, you’ll also find Meta AI has taken over the search bars and appears as another chat. If your accounts are connected to each other, the Meta AI conversation should pick up where you left off, regardless of what app you’re in.

How do I turn it off?

There’s no way to get rid of Meta AI in search, confirmed Meta. In WhatsApp, there is an option to hide the new Meta AI button by going to Settings → Chats → Show Meta AI Button. However, it’s still in the search bar. Other apps have an option to mute its replies. I asked the AI chatbot how to turn it off and got multiple incorrect answers with instructions that did not work and for settings that don’t exist.

You can delete a chat with Meta AI to remove it from recent conversations in the same way you would any other chat. Swipe left on the chat and select Delete in Instagram, More → Delete on Facebook and Messenger, and More → Delete Chat on WhatsApp.

How do I get started?

Start typing full sentences or random words in any of the apps’ search bars or in the conversations with Meta AI. If this is your first time using an AI chatbot, you can begin by asking simple questions and even for a list of ways to use it.

I did the first things any normal person does when testing an AI tool. I asked it to be my pretend boyfriend, told it to generate images of ducks writing breakup letters and tried to push its boundaries. I discovered it avoids partaking in overtly sexual conversations or generating photos of the Pope (entirely unrelated questions). As with all artificial intelligence, there are creative ways to get around its filters.

Meta AI includes options for shortcuts. Type a forward slash and command, like /joke:, /imagine: or /story: and type your description after. However, these aren’t really necessary since you can make the same requests in a conversational way, such as “tell me a story about depressed hamster who ran for mayor.”

What should I use it for?

An AI chatbot is like having an enthusiastic but unreliable friend. You can ask it almost anything — but never assume it’s telling the truth. With that in mind, use Meta AI for fun and for noncritical tasks. Ask random questions like you would with Google, start conversations to feel less alone and use it to brainstorm.

Meta AI can also generate images, though in our tests they have the typical flaws associated with artificial intelligence. Most share the hyper-realistic lighting that AI images are known for, fumble details like fingers and eyes, and frequently give women exposed, ample cleavage.

There are plenty of other things you can try. Ask Meta AI to animate images, request a summary of the day’s news or ask it to take on the personality of a specific character when speaking to you. Because it’s integrated with Meta’s other products, you can use it to search things like “Reels of people learning to roller skate.”

To get the best results and avoid bland responses, ask follow-up questions and give as many details as possible. For a list of starter ideas, check out Tech Friend Shira Ovide’s recommendations of useful things to ask a chatbot .

What should I not use it for?

Don’t use AI as an authority for anything of consequence. For example, don’t rely on a chatbot for medical advice or as a source for school or work. Ethically, you shouldn’t use it to write papers for school, though Meta AI is happy to spit out wooden essays on demand.

Experts warn there is a danger of misinformation from tools like Meta’s chatbot. To steer clear, avoid using it as a go-to for anything sensitive or political. Turn to human sources instead like reporters, experts, even Wikipedia and Reddit, before artificial intelligence. For more advice on avoiding misinformation, check out our guide.

How is it different from other AI bots?

For the basics, Meta AI appears to spit out the same generic answers as its competitors. I asked five different chatbots about the best taqueria in San Francisco, a vegetarian meal plan, if God exists and how to know if a polycule is right for you. For the most part, they all gave incredibly similar, mundane but neutral answers with the exception of Microsoft’s Co-pilot, which does not enjoy shenanigans.

Is it keeping my information?

Use the same precautions typing questions and thoughts into an AI chatbot as you would a Google search. Meta does save the conversations but to protect privacy, the data is anonymized, meaning it’s not connected to your name or identity. While this is standard for technology companies, experts say it’s possible to re-identify people using additional data points. If you want to delete a chat, you can use the shortcut “/reset-ai” and Meta claims it will remove the conversation from its servers.

Ai and text dominance: navigating the future of human conversations.

Different Generations Conversing

Communication is evolving due to two factors: AI's ability to engage in human-like conversations and the increasing dominance of text over voice. Does this pose a challenge for the future?

To explore these two factors, I interviewed Sherry Turkle , a TED speaker , author, and MIT professor, and Yoav Shoham , also a TED speaker , author, and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. Turkle's research focuses on the psychology of people’s relationships with technology, while Shoham is renowned as a world leading computer scientist and co-founder of AI21 Labs whose LLM competes with GPT by focusing on avoiding errors and clear communication.

Human Like Conversations

In the largest Turing test to date conducted by Shoham’s AI21 Labs, 68% of participants correctly identified whether they were conversing with a human or a bot. Intriguingly, the French proved to be the most adept at making this distinction.

But is it crucial to know if we're speaking to a bot? Related to this is whether the conversation itself or the response holds more importance.

Talking to a Bot

For those accustomed to in-person interactions, managing conversations without non-verbal cues is challenging. Seeing someone allows us to construct a narrative about them—accurate or not—which, for better or worse, shapes our perceptions.

Making it clear whether one is interacting with a bot enables certain assumptions. For example, an interlocutor like ChatGPT may come across as polite, knowledgeable, overly agreeable, and somewhat lacking in synthesizing diverse ideas.

Samsung Is Giving Away A Free Galaxy S24 In A New Promotion

The fallout 4 next gen update is not going great, mike tyson on becoming a heavy hitter in weed.

Turkle voiced concerns that relying on chatbots could lead to a decline in meaningful human interactions, noting “When you're talking to an AI, you're essentially talking to nobody. It's not a person.”

The Journey or the Destination?

Whether you mind speaking to a bot or a human largely depends on the context. Many have grown accustomed to bots providing straightforward, factual responses. Yet, the broader acceptance of AI and bots might hinge on whether you lean more towards emotional or logical reasoning—a reflection of whether you value the journey or the destination more.

For Turkle, the essence of human connection is significant because, "You will have more of a sense of whether you can trust me."

Shoham counters, “There are circumstances where a machine is a better interlocutor than a person. If I have two doctors and one is more reliable and available - I wouldn’t care in the least if it was a machine or a person.”

Assessing 'reliability' in this context is crucial—evaluating a human involves emotional intuition, whereas judging an AI bot requires a more logical approach. These are different skills.

The Dominance of Chat

Turning to the second topic, in an excellent essay by Rebecca Roache , a philosopher at Royal Holloway, University of London, mentions that “Anxiety about the dystopian effects of new technology on friendship is as old as the written word. Older, in fact, for Socrates, the written word was itself part of the problem. Well over 2,000 years ago, Socrates supposedly expressed scepticism about letter-writing as a route to wisdom, favouring face-to-face interaction with peers.”

Turkle suggests that younger generations may be losing their ability to engage in meaningful arguments due to a lack of in-depth conversations. However, Shoham offers a contrasting viewpoint, “To develop intellectual ideas requires more long form and patience, which perhaps younger generations have less of - but this doesn't speak to human conversations”

He goes on to discuss Gen Z’s impatience with the long form, “I used to think that this was reflective of shallow thinking and shallower communication. I am not sure of that anymore, I think it is a different way to convey information. To the next generation, chats denote much more than they do to us. I'm a little cautious in interpreting this as that we have lost the ability to communicate nuance and deep ideas to each other.”

The brains of Generation Z are likely wired differently from those of previous generations. While some research investigates how synaptic connections in the brain may vary based on factors such as a digital upbringing, it is premature to fully understand how the brains of those in Generation Z process communication and handle non-verbal cues. As Shoham points out, “There is no question that the younger generation is growing up and communicating in different ways than we did. It's always been the case and will always be the case.”

Furthermore, as Shoham indicates, the new ways of communicating may be a lot more efficient, “I have young kids, and when they are impatient with me as they have already got the idea, they ask why am I wasting so many words on it.”

Future Communications

As a computer scientist, Shoham may be more accustomed to conversing with AI than the average person. However, this doesn't diminish his need for human connection, “Emotional connection, for example, the tender look and the warm embrace, is so built into us that it won’t be replaced in the near term [several dozens of years].”

Looking further ahead, Shoham predicts that within the next 50 to 100 years, computers and phones will become obsolete as advancements in technology enable communication via thoughts. He suggests that visionaries like Musk or others will unlock this capability, “Machines will be running through our bloodstream. The distinction between humans and computers won’t be as crisp as it is today.”

Meta’s A.I. Assistant Is Fun to Use, but It Can’t Be Trusted

Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s hope for the chatbot to be the smartest, it struggles with facts, numbers and web search.

In an illustration, a robotic hand points to a blank speech bubble.

Brian X. Chen is The Times’s lead consumer technology writer and the author of Tech Fix , a column about the social implications of the tech we use.

In the last few days, you may have noticed something new inside Meta’s apps, including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp: an artificially intelligent chatbot .

Within those apps, you can chat with Meta AI and type in questions and requests like “What’s the weather this week in New York?” or “Write a poem about two dogs living in San Francisco.” The assistant will come up with responses immediately, such as “The corgi was short, with a butt so wide, the lab was tall, with a tongue that would glide.” You can also instruct Meta AI to produce pictures — like an illustration of a family watching fireworks.

This is Meta’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT , the chatbot that upended the tech industry in 2022, and similar bots including Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Bing AI. The Meta bot’s image generator also competes with A.I. imaging tools like Adobe’s Firefly, Midjourney and DALL-E .

Unlike other chatbots and image generators, Meta’s A.I. assistant is a free tool baked into apps that billions of people use every day, making it the most aggressive push yet from a big tech company to bring this flavor of artificial intelligence — known as generative A.I. — to the mainstream.

“We believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use,” Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive, wrote on Instagram on Thursday.

The new bot invites you to “ask Meta AI anything” — but my advice, after testing it for six days, is to approach it with caution. It makes lots of mistakes when you treat it as a search engine. For now, you can have some fun: Its image generator can be a clever way to express yourself when chatting with friends.

A Meta spokeswoman said that because the technology was new, it might not always return accurate responses, similar to other A.I. systems. There is currently no way to turn off Meta AI inside the apps.

Here’s what doesn’t work well — and what does — in Meta’s AI.

It’s not a search engine

Meta announced its chatbot as a replacement for web search. By typing queries for Meta AI into the search bar at the top of Messenger or Instagram, a group of friends planning a trip could look up flights while chatting, the company said.

I’ll be blunt: Don’t do this. Meta AI fails spectacularly at basic search queries like looking up recipes, airfares and weekend activities.

In response to my request to look up flights from New York to Colorado, the chatbot listed instructions on how to take public transportation from the Denver airport to downtown. And when I asked for flights from Oakland, Calif., to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, the bot listed flights departing from Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

When I asked Meta AI to look up a recipe for baking Japanese milk bread, the bot produced a generic bread recipe that skipped the most important step: tangzhong, the technique that involves cooking flour and milk into a paste.

The A.I. also made up other basic information. When I asked it for suggestions for a romantic weekend in Oakland, its list included a fictional business. And when I asked it to tell me about myself — Brian Chen the journalist — it said I worked at The New York Times but incorrectly mentioned a tech blog I’ve never written for, The Verge.

Bing AI and Gemini, which are hooked directly into the Microsoft and Google search engines, did better at these types of search tasks, but clicking on a link through an old-fashioned web search is still more efficient.

Don’t ask it to count

A.I. chatbots work by looking for patterns in how words are used together, similar to the predictive text systems on our phones that suggest words to complete a sentence. All of them have struggled with numbers.

Unsurprisingly, Meta’s assistant stinks at counting. When you ask it for a five-syllable word starting with the letter w, it will respond with “wonderfully,” which has four syllables. When you ask it for a four-syllable word starting with w, it will offer “wonderful,” which has three syllables. Gemini and ChatGPT also fail at these tests.

Focus on words

Like other chatbots, Meta’s performed better the more information you gave it.

It excelled at editing existing paragraphs. For example, when I fed Meta AI paragraphs that felt verbose and asked for the paragraph to be tightened, the chatbot trimmed all the unnecessary words. When I asked it to improve a sentence written in passive voice, the bot rewrote it in active voice and added more context. When I asked it to remove jargon from a paragraph written by a tech blog, it rewrote highly technical terms in plain language.

It’s a fine study guide

Because Meta AI is better when it works with existing text, it can be helpful for studying. For instance, if you’re taking a history class and studying World War II, you can paste a website with information about the war into the search bar and then ask the bot to quiz you. The chatbot will read the information on the website and generate a multiple-choice test.

You can use it for fun emojis

The most compelling aspect of Meta AI is its ability to generate images by typing “/imagine” followed by a description of the desired image. For instance, “/imagine a photograph of a cat sleeping on a window sill” will produce a convincing image in a few seconds:

Meta’s A.I. is much faster than other image generators like Midjourney, which can take more than a minute. The results can be very weird — images of people occasionally lacked limbs or looked cross-eyed.

Ethics experts have raised concerns about the implications of generating fake images because they can contribute to the spread of misinformation online. But in the context of using A.I. while chatting with friends and family in WhatsApp and Messenger, Meta AI is a positive example of how generating fake images can be fun — and safe — if we treat it as a new form of emoji.

In a group conversation with my in-laws, I mentioned I was shopping for a robust baby stroller that could withstand the crooked roads of my neighborhood. In seconds, my wife used Meta AI to generate an image of a stroller with enormous wheels that made it resemble a monster truck, stamped with a helpful label that said, “Imagined with AI.”
