A very subtle way to lengthen your speech without seeming repetitive or dragging is to share some helpful resources on your topic towards the end.

How Does Sharing Resources Help?

Sharing resources and additional information has its pros. Mainly, it portrays the idea that you wish to help the audience gain more insight on the said topic and lets you gain some opinions and views from the audience. So, when you research and prepare the content for your delivery in the first place, you can save some resources in the form of articles, papers, videos, movies, books, and NGOs (whichever applies to your respective topic), which you can then provide in the form of presentations, pamphlets or even verbally.

For example: in this very article, I have tried my best to provide you resources through videos, website links, and examples. Similarly, if you were to talk about “Investment Strategies,” you can provide website links, news and journal articles, video suggestions, courses, and books that will assist them in understanding the concept at a deeper level.

Sharing helpful resources can take up approximately 2-3 minutes, often aiding in lengthening your speech helpfully and effectively.

7. Reiterate The Main Points to Lengthen Your Speech

Another way that you can make your speech longer yet more impactful is by repeating the main themes and points you want to convey to the audience. You can do so by paraphrasing and focusing on the tone and pauses through voice modulation.

For example, if “a happy mind is a key to a happy heart” is the message that I wish to convey, I can directly say this statement once at the start and once at the end. Other times, if I want to communicate the same idea subtly, I can include phrases like – “a happy heart often depends on a happy mind” or “happiness of mind and heart are linked.”  

So, I essentially wish to convey that by summarizing the essential pointers and phrasing the content, you can elongate your speech and gain the benefit of creating a substantial impact on the audience.

How to Shorten Your Presentation without Losing Impact

You can shorten your presentation without losing impact.

Imagine, you’ve done all the work to prepare and rehearse a major presentation and at the last minute you’re told, “I’m so sorry, but we’re short on time. Can you give us the five-minute version?”

Is it possible to shorten a presentation without losing all of your impact? Yes. Don’t panic. After all, a sound bite is often more powerful than a lengthy dissertation. Here’s how to condense your speech without losing impact:

1. Don’t apologize or mention that you usually have much more time. Find confidence in the fact you’ve prepared. You can still get your central message across in five minutes. 2. Begin quickly. Start with an attention-getting statement such as, “Your job won’t exist five years from now,” or “I will convince you the best action to take is…”

3. Use a strongly visual story. A very brief story can illustrate your point – how it is now, how it will or could be. Choose a story so vivid that the audience can “see” it.

4. Divide your five minutes into three parts. For example, you might present a problem, your solution, and the payoff.  For example: “The best advice I can give you in facing this challenge today is…” Then, let your story illustrate and support your point. In closing, your words should emphasize the positive outcome your audience can expect when they go with your solution or approach to the challenge.

What Is Bonking? Here’s Your Complete Guide

If you find yourself feeling totally tapped out on rides and struggling to make it to the end—a.k.a. bonking—you need this guide to maintaining energy.

Pro racer and cycling coach Tyler Williams has dealt with athletes who bonk and has been an athlete who has bonked himself many, many times. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, especially if you come from a more old-school cycling background. Even a decade ago, cyclists like Williams were taught to fuel minimally, encouraged to do fasted rides , and generally followed the idea that pushing through a bonk is a sign of strength. Spoiler alert: It’s not. Bonking leads to worse results, lower power outputs , and a general feeling of hating the ride.

Here, Williams and Stevie Lyn Smith , RD, sports dietitian based in Buffalo, New York, share their best tips for catching a bonk early and hopefully avoiding it in the future.

What is bonking?

“A true bonk is when the muscles have inadequate glycogen on-board and we see a reduction in muscle contractions with an increase in fatigue ,” saysSmith. This leads to an inability to perform on the bike, and it makes you feel terrible.

Glycogen is the fuel your legs and your brain need in order to function. We can only store so much in our muscles, which is why we need to take in fuel on longer, harder rides as those stores become depleted. Bonking is your body’s way of warning you that your glycogen stores are depleted—and that it’s past time to either refuel or stop.

To put it a little more simply: “I’ve had clients describe it as the lights going out,” says Williams. “Or they say it’s like their gas tank is empty.”

You’ll recognize symptoms of bonking beyond heavy legs and feeling like you just can’t go any farther. “[Bonking] will also include nausea , dizziness, cognitive impairment, lack of coordination, and physical weakness,” says Smith.

If you start to feel lightheaded, or you’re suddenly struggling on a climb that’s normally easy, think back: When was the last time you ate something?

How do you avoid bonking?

➥don’t start your ride depleted.

If you start a ride properly fueled, you’re in a better position even if you accidentally wait a little too long to start snacking . That means you should eat a meal within two hours of your ride. “This is highly individual but if you’re having breakfast a couple of hours preride , a great place to start is aiming for 2 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of bodyweight, plus a moderate amount of protein —around 15 to 20 grams—to keep you satiated,” says Smith. For example, this could look like a bowl of oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter and some berries, or some toast with two eggs.

➥Fuel and hydrate early and often

“The thing is, if you’re not fueling, then you’re digging a hole,” says Williams. “You want to be focused on fueling and have a plan from the start of your ride, rather than starting to fuel after a couple hours.”

Proper fueling practices will help you avoid bonking. For rides under an hour, just water is fine as long as you start the ride well-fueled. Anything longer means it’s time to start taking in carbs . Keep it simple: Aim to take in between 30 to 60 grams (120 to 240 calories) of carbohydrates per hour in the form of bars, gels, sports drinks, or gummies.

➥Carefully increase your carb intake to find your optimal fueling strategy

“I try to get most of my athletes, who are typically doing longer Gran Fondo-style racing , up to 80 to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour for events like that,” Williams says. “But that takes practice, so I’m always working with the athletes to fuel like that on their longer weekend rides so they know if 100 grams per hour feels better or is more doable than 80.”

Start slow if you want to up your carb intake: Williams has his athletes add 10 grams per hour to what they’ve been doing, tests that for a few rides, then adds another 10 if they’re feeling good. The goal is to find your sweet spot where you feel fueled and strong: Too little, and you bonk. But too much, and you’ll deal with digestive issues like cramping, gas, and bloating .

One caveat: Everyone is individual and has different energy needs. That’s why the range of hourly carbohydrate intake is so big. You may find that you need 400 calories per hour to feel good when you’re doing a really long, hard effort, while someone else needs 200. Your riding partner may not need to eat as much as you to avoid bonking, so don’t base your fueling strategy off of what your buddy is doing, stick to your plan.

➥Stay hydrated

While dehydration isn’t the same as bonking, staying properly hydrated both avoids symptoms of dehydration (that can feel similar to a bonk) and helps you digest your food. Imagine your gut like a sink drain: If you add in only food, it clogs the drain and doesn’t go anywhere. Your gut needs water to help it break down those carbohydrates into usable fuel for your muscles.

Aim for at least one bottle of water or sports drink per hour of riding, more if it’s hot or you’re a heavy sweater.

What are common reasons people tend to bonk?

➥focusing on weight loss.

Many cyclists find cycling because they’re trying to lose weight . But trying to lose weight by cutting calories is a recipe for disaster both on and off the bike. “You can’t do hard training and try to cut weight simultaneously,” says Williams. “Trying to cut 20 pounds and also perform at a high level is nearly impossible. And if you cut calories during your ride, you’ll be a less effective rider, you’ll hurt your recovery , and you’ll likely end up overeating later because you'll be hungry.”

In fact, fueling well during a ride is the best way to ensure that you’re able to focus on healthy eating off the bike. “If you’ve fueled your ride well, you’re generally less hungry after, so you’re going to make better decisions postride and have less weird cravings generally,” says Williams. “You’ll be better equipped to make healthy choices.”

➥Training fasted

The whole “no breakfast” movement has picked up steam in recent years under the banner of fasted cardio. If you’re on this bandwagon, there is a way to train in the morning without bonking, but it’s not going to be easy, and needs to be done carefully.

“Fasted rides should be done really methodically, and usually with coach supervision and advice,” says Williams. “They only make sense at certain points in your training.”

If you are training fasted, keep it short and easy. “If you deplete yourself by pushing past your endurance pace , you’re no longer burning fat, you’re burning whatever glycogen is left in your muscles, which will cause you to bonk,” Williams adds. “Stay in that easy zone, because if you start pushing the pace, you’re going to bonk or you’re going to finish the ride starving.”

➥Simply forgetting to eat

Most bonks happen accidentally. It’s easy to skip a gel or two if you’re highly focused and working hard in a race, on a technical mountain bike ride that requires full focus, or you simply didn’t pack enough snacks because you thought your ride would be shorter. You may need to reconsider your fueling strategy if you find yourself constantly bonking accidentally.

This might mean switching from gels and bars to sports drink in a race so that you can take in calories as you hydrate. On the mountain bike, it could mean swapping bottles for a hydration pack with sports drink so it’s easier to take quick sips even while riding on rocky single track. And if you’re someone who constantly forgets to pack enough, get a large bar bag or saddle bag and stuff them with extra snacks that come with you on every ride.

How do you come back from bonking?

If you miscalculated on your fueling and you’re starting to feel those flat legs, that drifty feeling in your brain, and a bit of a wobble to your pedal stroke, you may be heading toward a serious bonk. Can you come out of it?

Unfortunately, not fully, says Williams. “But you can start to feel a bit better [by eating something] and finish your ride,” he says. (Bonking in a race, though, means it’s very unlikely that you’ll get the result you were hoping for.)

Much like avoiding a bonk, coming back from one starts with fueling. “Eat and hydrate,” says Smith. “Bonking is clear feedback from your body that you’re depleted. Start to get some carbs, electrolytes , and fluids on board ASAP.”

If you’re riding outside and your bonk symptoms include any kind of cognitive impairment, don’t fuel while riding. Pull over and have a snack, and give your body a break. Otherwise, you’re at risk of crashing.

You also may need to cut your ride short or drop from doing intervals to pedaling at an easy pace if you’re not feeling better quickly. Don’t try to push the pace right away. “Always proceed with caution and pedal at an easy pace for a while, because depending on how depleted you are, just eating a gel or a bar might not get you fully ready to finish your workout,” says Smith. “It takes time for your body to process the carbs you’re taking in. Luckily, you should start to feel better within a few minutes.”

What are the downsides of continuously bonking?

A bonk used to be almost a badge of honor amongst old-school cyclists. It indicated that you went as hard as you could and you were finishing the ride with the tank empty. This is not something to celebrate, though.

“Bonking was such a frequent occurrence when I was first starting to ride,” says Williams. “Back then, I would just ride until I bonked, and that was considered good training. We thought that was finding our limit, but it turns out, you don’t really hit that limit if you fuel correctly.”

A bonk doesn’t just hurt you on that day. Continually running out of energy and depleting yourself on rides will delay recovery and make it hard for you to see improvements in your cycling. “Fueling your ride helps to keep from dipping too deep into your body’s glycogen stores and promotes a quicker recovery postride,” Smith adds.

Finally, bonking frequently can increase your risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), which happens when you’re not meeting your body’s energy demands. If you’re constantly finishing rides under-fueled, it can be hard to make up that deficit, especially if you lead a busy life. RED-S can make it impossible for you to train or race at the level you want to be at, and can cause long-term health damages, including lowering your immunity , and increasing your risk of injury .

Tiger Woods finishes Masters with his highest score as a pro and sets sights on upcoming majors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods finished the Masters on Sunday with a record he could do without, walking off the course with a 16-over 304, his highest 72-hole score in a career that spans three decades.

Woods’ previous high was 302 at the Memorial in 2015. He has only failed to break 300 one other time at the Masters two years ago when he shot 78-78 on the weekend and finished at 301.

Despite the score, Woods called it a “good week” and said he’s going to begin preparing for the other three majors including the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and the British Open in July.

“This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I’m going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon,” Woods said. “But that’s kind of the game plan.”

Overall, he wasn’t unhappy with how he played.

“Coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday,” Woods said. “Unfortunately (Saturday) didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”

It hardly mattered to the crowd.

The 48-year-old Woods, who is still dealing with the effects of numerous surgeries that have impacted his body and limited his playing time on the PGA Tour, received a huge roar from the crowd as he pitched close to the hole on No. 18 and made par.

Wearing his traditional Sunday red, Woods tipped his hat the crowd.

Woods has played only 24 holes in one tournament going into the Masters

“I’m just going to keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing,” Woods said. “Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.”

Woods was in last place among the 60 players who made the cut when he finished. The previous time he finished in last place was in the 2020 Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

Still, the patrons flocked to see the man who took golf’s popularity to new heights, even if he isn’t been the dominant player he once was at Augusta National.

Woods hasn’t really been competitive here since 2020 when he finished tied for 38th one year after his stunning fifth victory at age 43.

He finished 13 over two years ago, then was forced to withdraw in 2023 in the third round due to injuries that weren’t helped by the cold, rainy weather that had taken an obvious physical toll on his body.

For a short time this week Woods showed glimpses of past greatness, relying mostly on his knowledge of the course.

He played the first two rounds in 1 over to make the cut for a record 24th time. But the final two rounds were a struggle for Woods, who posted his worst round of his career at a major with an 82 on Saturday.

“It’s always nice coming back here because I know the golf course, I know how to play it,” Woods said. “I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it’s never quite the same as getting out here and doing it.”

He played the final 36 holes in 15 over, shooting 77 on Sunday in his 100th career round at the Masters.

Before the round Woods appeared to receive some swing tips from his 15-year-old son Charlie on the practice range.

Things started off well enough, but that didn’t last long.

After playing the first two holes in 1 under, Woods made a bogey on No. 3 before things started to unravel on the par-4 fifth hole when he took an unplayable lie and had to be driven back to the tee box in a golf cart to hit again. He wound up with a triple-bogey 7.

He added another bogey on the 6th.

He nearly chipped in from the sand on No. 16, giving fans a thrill and bringing back fond memories of his iconic chip in in 2005 en route to the fourth of his five championships at Augusta.

Woods said the toughest part of the week for him was battling the wind, which reached 45 mph at times with gusts.

“What it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing,” Woods said. “It doesn’t take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot (Saturday) and a couple times today.”

The once-dominant Woods played with Neal Shipley, the only amateur to make the cut at the Masters.

It was a stark reminder of just how long Woods has been around.

Woods’ streak of cuts made at the Masters began in 1997, before the 23-year-old Shipley was born.

Even with Woods being out of contention he still attracting the usual huge throng of fans eager just to get a glimpse of the player that became the face of the sport. Fans applaud after every Woods’ shot — good or bad — and continue to shout encouragement his way.

WASHINGTON — With the April tax deadline arriving next week, the Internal Revenue Service today reminded millions of last-minute tax filers that the agency has a variety of free tools and resources available on IRS.gov.

From tax preparation, answers to tax law questions, refund tracking, tax law research to business topics and more, IRS.gov has everything needed for taxpayers to file on time or get an easy, automatic six-month extension to file. The IRS also has special Saturday hours available at 70 Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country to help taxpayers.

“Millions of taxpayers across the nation will be working on their tax returns during the final hours, and people should remember they have many ways to get last-minute help,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “We have a variety of free tools on IRS.gov that can help with basic tax law questions, provide free filing options, update refund status and even provide ways to request an extension for more time to file. We’re continuing our expanded special assistance for taxpayers right through the final weekend of tax season with special Saturday hours at 70 locations.”

For most of the nation, the tax deadline is April 15. Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts have until April 17 to file and pay taxes due this year. This is because these states observe the Patriots’ Day holiday on April 15 this year and April 16 is the Emancipation Day holiday in the District of Columbia. Other taxpayers in disaster areas, certain active-duty military members and citizens living abroad automatically get more time to file; more details are below.

For taxpayers who need an extension of time to file their taxes, there are several options to get an automatic extension through Oct. 15. Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes due on April 15, 2024. To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by the April 15 deadline.

The IRS estimates 19 million taxpayers will file for an automatic extension.

The IRS has already received more than 100 million tax returns, with tens of millions more expected to be filed as the tax deadline approaches.

“Delivering tax season is a massive undertaking, and we greatly appreciate people in many different areas working long hours to serve taxpayers as the tax deadline approaches,” Werfel added. “This effort reaches far beyond the IRS and includes hard-working tax professionals, software providers, the payroll community as well as our colleagues in the state tax agencies. Their work helping taxpayers makes a difference.”

Get tax help, day or night

For those needing last-minute help, taxpayers will find filing information for individuals as well as businesses and self-employed on IRS.gov. For last-minute filers looking for free resources, IRS Direct File remains an option as does IRS Free File . Anyone can use IRS Free File to submit an extension of time to file regardless of their income.

IRS.gov is an important resource that can help in a number of areas:

  • For answers to tax law questions, taxpayers will find tools like the Interactive Tax Assistant or they can use the Frequently Asked Questions tool to find answers to dozens of topics.
  • To see federal tax information, taxpayers can use the Online Account . They'll find information such as a payoff amount, a balance owed, their payment history and key information from their current year tax return as originally filed. They can also get tax return transcripts.
  • Use the Get Transcript tool to view, print or download their tax transcripts after the IRS has processed a return.
  • Current and prior year forms , instructions and tax publications can be downloaded and printed anytime.
  • Special information is available about tax credits and deductions , some of which can be overlooked. Available to individuals and businesses, credits can reduce the amount of tax due while deductions can reduce the amount of taxable income.
  • Get the most up-to-date information about tax refunds using the Where's My Refund? tool and on the official IRS mobile app, IRS2Go .
  • For payment information, Direct Pay is free and allows people to securely pay their taxes directly from their checking or savings account without any fees or registration. They can schedule payments up to 365 days in advance. After submitting a payment through Direct Pay, they’ll receive immediate confirmation. For more payment options, visit IRS.gov/payments .

Go paperless

The IRS encourages all taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit to avoid refund delays. Filing on paper can significantly delay a refund. Tax software helps individuals steer clear of mistakes by doing the math. It also guides people through each section of their tax return using a question-and-answer format.

Some taxpayers get automatic extensions

Special rules offer some taxpayers more time without having to request an extension:

  • U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work outside of the United States and Puerto Rico get an automatic two-month extension, until June 15, to file their tax returns. However, tax payments are still due April 15 or interest will accrue on the unpaid tax.
  • Members of the military on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico also receive an automatic two-month extension to file. Those serving in combat zones have up to 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due. Details are available in Publication 3, Armed Forces' Tax Guide .
  • When the U.S. president makes a disaster area declaration, the IRS can postpone certain tax deadlines for taxpayers in affected areas. Taxpayers in qualified disaster areas do not need to submit an extension electronically or on paper. Information on the most recent tax relief for disaster situations can be found on the Extension of time to file your tax return page.

Find information on free local tax prep

The IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals, including:

  • People who generally make $64,000 or less.
  • People with disabilities.
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers.

The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program also offers free tax help for taxpayers, particularly those age 60 and older.

The VITA/TCE Site Locator can help eligible taxpayers find the nearest community-based site staffed by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. Demand is high for this service, so taxpayers may experience longer wait times for appointments. Taxpayers can use the locator tool to find an available site near them. It’s updated throughout the tax season, so individuals should check back or increase the distance from their location in their search if they don't see a nearby site listed.

MilTax , Military OneSource’s tax service, offers online software for eligible military members, veterans and their families to electronically file a federal return and up to three state returns for free.

Assistive technology options

At the online Alternative Media Center , taxpayers will find a variety of accessible products like screen reading software, refreshable Braille displays and screen magnifying software. These products include tax forms, instructions and publications. Many can be downloaded or viewed online as Section 508 compliant PDF, HTML, eBraille, text and large print.

Having trouble paying? IRS has options to help

For those who owe a payment with their tax return, the IRS has a number of payment options .

For taxpayers that are unable to pay in full by the tax deadline, the IRS recommends they should file their tax return and pay what they can, and apply for an online payment plan . By filing by the deadline, taxpayers will avoid failure to file penalties and interest – even if they’re unable to pay. Taxpayers can explore various payments options; they can receive an immediate response of payment plan acceptance or denial without calling or writing to the IRS. Online payment plan options include:

  • Short-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Additional time of up to 180 days to pay the balance in full.
  • Long-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $50,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Pay in monthly payments for up to 72 months. Payments may be set up using direct debit (automatic bank withdraw) which eliminates the need to send in a payment each month, saving postage costs and reducing the chance of default. For balances between $25,000 and $50,000, direct debit is required.

Though interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on any unpaid taxes after April 15, the failure to pay penalty is cut in half while an installment agreement is in effect. Adjust withholding to prevent tax "surprises"

Tax filing season is an excellent time for taxpayers to check their withholding to avoid a tax surprise when filing in 2025. Life events like marriage, divorce, having a child or an income change can all impact taxes.

The Tax Withholding Estimator helps people bring the tax they pay closer to what is owed. Employees can assess their income tax, credits, adjustments and deductions, and determine whether they need to change their withholding by submitting a new Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate to their employer, not the IRS.
