Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

Dogs are the best choice as a pet because they understand their owners very well and support them in whatever condition they are in. I decided to get a dog as a pet after realising my affection for both street dogs and other people's pet dogs. Dogs are regarded as a person's best friend. I was not sure which dog breed to choose, but in the end, I decided on the Pomeranian breed. I went to a pet store to check out the different coloured Pomeranian dogs. I was highly confused but at the end chose an adorable brown coloured Pomeranian. I named him 'Benji', he was only a month old when I took him home.

Dogs are the only animals who love their owners without any reason. They start trusting their owners completely. On the day when my mother and I were going to purchase my pet dog, I was overcome with excitement. We both have the same love of animals, so I was sure she would be confused once she entered the pet store. She questioned me after entering the store as to why I wanted a dog only as a pet rather than a cat or bird, and I told her that I have a special affection for dogs.

Benefits | Dogs can help their owners with their mental health issues, can teach us new skills, can act as living examples of what their owners have taught them, and, most importantly, need regular exercise, which also helps us to maintain good cardiovascular health.

We discussed which dog to buy for the complete two hours before deciding on a white Persian dog with large black eyes and a short tail. I was staring at my new pet the entire time I was returning home and I named him Pluto. Finally, we ended up happily having a handsome dog that improved our health and mood and we love him dearly.

New Member Of Our Family

I decided, along with my mother, to purchase a puppy from a pet store on December 10, 2022. We went in the evening to finalise the puppy after she gave her permission. At the pet store's corner, I noticed a stunning white pomeranian sitting quietly and observing us. He was sitting with his gorgeous fluffy tail moving from left to right. We looked at many dogs, but this one grabbed my attention. I asked the shop owner if I could hold him in my hands, and he agreed. The dog was so kind that he began to play with me and lick me. After choosing to take him home with me, we proceed to buy his food, treats, leashes, toys, and shampoo.

My dog, Shero, accompanied me around the entire store. He seemed genuinely happy to be with me, which thrilled me. I had some concerns about whether he would be comfortable in the car and whether he would become anxious while driving, but nothing of the sort occurred. Instead, he reacted exactly the opposite of what I imagined. He sat next to me in the car the entire time we were travelling home and was enjoying the scenery. I got the feeling that he perhaps thought that he could now enjoy his life in the outside world.

First Experience At Home

After returning home, he initially felt some fear of unfamiliar objects, smells, and environment, but with time he got attached to everything. He was jumping on the bed, the couch, and playing with the toys we had bought for him. After some time, he began to bark, and as it was my first day with him, I was unaware that he did this when he was hungry. After finishing his meal, he slept for two to three hours. My family and I talked about his trainer while he was asleep so that he might learn new tasks that would make him stronger and more active, both of which are excellent for his health. I was staring at him while he slept and wondering how the atmosphere in the house had changed. The atmosphere in the home was now cheerful, joyful, and entertaining. He is now a member of our family.

One day when I was walking back home from school, I saw a Spitz struggling to get its leg out of a cycle tyre. I immediately went to help it. It was someone’s pet but seemed like it had lost its way. I helped it get rid of the tyre and gave a pat on its head. Spitzs are known to be quite affectionate. It began licking my arm. I looked around for its master but could not find anyone. As I began walking home, it started following me. I kept taking it back to the place I had found it for weeks in the hope to find its master but did not find anyone. Since then, it stays with us. I repeated my wish and she again took it lightly. This infuriated me and I told her that I really wanted a pet. It was then that my mother realized that I was serious about it. So she made me sit and explained as to why we could not keep a pet.

Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.

The Lady with the Pet Dog is a short story written by Anton Chekhov in 1889. The story presents a love affair between Dmitry Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna who met at a sea resort in Yalta. Gurov is depicted as a character that has certain disrespect for women and considers them an inferior race; he is unhappy in his marriage and he seems to be a cynic with no ability to love. Anna, in her turn, is a romantic character; she is also married but her attitude towards marriage is not as biased as that of Gurov. After committing adultery, Anna is rather remorseful of her deed and becomes even more despondent than before taking the vacation (Smith 65). Narration plays a decisive role in this story because it allows discovering the characters’ feelings and emotions, as well as observing the events which unfold in it. The function of the narrator in The Lady with the Pet Dog is to reflect the inner feelings of the characters; in this story, Chekhov chooses a third-person narrative with a limited point of view because using this point of view when describing personal relations is especially convenient.

To begin with, the main function of the narrator in the story under consideration is to inform the readers and to reveal certain feelings and emotions hidden inside the story’s characters. Chekhov’s narration is unobtrusive; his main aim is to inform the readers about the events which unfold in the story without providing any personal opinions or imposing certain ideas on the readers. This is especially evident in the description of Gurov who has “something attractive and elusive which allured women and disposed of them in his favor” (Chekhov 2). Such description is rather vague and abstract, but, “in its abstract and static way, the description is effective in supporting the story of a man who experiences love through intellect rather than emotion” (McClanahan 82). Not only does Chekhov narrate about the events in the story, but he also tells how the characters perceive what is taking place in the story; for instance, he discloses Gurov’s feelings towards Anna by describing how “he thought about her in his room at the hotel – thought she would certainly meet him next day” (Chekhov 3). Thus, apart from informing, the role of the narrator in this story consists in revealing the character’s inner worries and sufferings.

In addition, the third-person narrative with a limited point of view is used by Chekhov in The Lady with the Pet Dog. A third-person narrator uses the pronouns “he”, “she”, and “they” when referring to the characters. At this, however, the point of view is limited because Chekhov presents the events from the perspective of Gurov only. It is seldom that he describes Anna thinking about Dmitry. For example, Chekhov mentions that Gurov was constantly thinking about Anna after they parted: “He would pace a long time about his room, remembering it all and smiling; then his memories passed into dreams, and in his fancy, the past was mingled with what was to come” (Chekhov 10). In contrast, Anna’s feelings are depicted only when she is with Gurov: “She glanced at him and turned pale, then glanced again with horror, unable to believe her eyes, and tightly gripped the fan and the lorgnette in her hands, evidently struggling with herself not to faint” (Chekhov 13). This presents the story purely from Gurov’s perspective, thus affecting its plot and overall meaning.

Finally, there are two main reasons why Chekhov chose namely this point of view. Firstly, using this point of view is quite convenient when depicting personal relations. It allows the author to take a neutral position of an informant who simply shares what is taking place with the readers. And, secondly, third person narration with limited point of view helps the author to avoid responsibility and be objective in presenting the facts. For instance, if there was narration with unlimited point of view, the narrator could seem biased when telling about the characters’ relations. In contrast, when making the readers witness what Gurov was experiencing, the narrator shared with them some intimate details of Gurov’s life, the details which the readers would have never discovered without the narrator. This has added value for the narrator because it allows establishing contact with the readers. Therefore, Chekhov has chosen the third-person narrative with limited perspective to get rid of responsibility, avoid bias, and earn the trust of the readers.

Drawing a conclusion, it can be stated that Chekhov was quite successful when choosing a particular point of view in the story. The narrator in The Lady with the Pet Dog is an informant who, from the third-person narration with limited perspective, informs the readers about the events taking place in the story and, at this, is unobtrusive and objective when describing personal relations between Gurov and Anna. This proves the talent of the author and his desire to present to the readers a decent piece of writing.

Why the Westminster Dog Show Made Me Appreciate Mutts

I spent three years among dogs with bloodlines like British royalty. In our world, they would be earls and duchesses. Their names are in stud books that go back countless generations. They are the product of centuries of careful breeding to make them the most perfect versions of themselves.

Eh. I like mutts better.

It’s not that I didn’t like the dogs I met at dog shows around the U.S.–including the most prestigious of them all, the Westminster Dog Show. They were beautiful specimens: athletic, combed to a high sheen, well-behaved. The only dog that growled at me the whole time was a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (shortened in the dog world to “PBGV”) at a show in Tennessee. It belongs to our beloved former vet, who shows dogs on the weekends. Maybe her dog thought I was a little too friendly.

The dogs on the dog-show circuit—a never-ending tour of big cities and small towns all over America, a rolling caravan that I came to think of as “Dogland”—have to meet brutal guidelines just to step into the ring. Each of the American Kennel Club’s 200 recognized breeds has a written standard that outlines what a prime example of the breed can and cannot be. Some breed standards run thousands of words. A brief rundown of flaws that can disqualify a dog from competition:

Doberman pinscher: Overbite of more than three-sixteenths of an inch, or underbite of more than one-eighth inch.

Papillion: All white or not having any white.

Shetland sheepdog: Height of less than 13 inches or more than 16 inches.

Dogs that meet all the rules and make it to the top of the show world are just about physically perfect. I spent a lot of time with a Samoyed named Striker who won more than 100 dog shows all over North America. One time I asked his handler, Laura King, to tell me where Striker fails to meet the Samoyed breed standard, which runs to 1,600 words. The only thing she could think of was a slight discoloration on the inside of his lip.

None of this is by accident. Breeders choose the puppies they believe to be “show quality” when they are just a few weeks old. (The other dogs in the litter are deemed “pet quality.” Dogland is the only place where that phrase serves as a dig.)

The ones who grow up to be champion show dogs are then bred with other champion show dogs to produce, naturally, even more champion show dogs. But that process, repeated over generations within a breed, leads to what people in Dogland refer to as “line breeding.” What it means, in practice, is that show dogs are inbred.

Inbreeding is fairly common among all types of animals. Intensive inbreeding, in situations like the show-dog world, can have long-term medical effects. That’s because recessive genes that could get muted by crossbreeding get amplified instead. This means that nearly every breed of purebred dog has chronic health problems that never get fixed. In 2015, a group of researchers analyzed the records of nearly 89 thousand dogs that came through a California veterinary hospital over a 15-year span. They found that purebreds were more likely than mutts to have any of 10 different genetic conditions—everything from cataracts to dermatitis to bloat (a distended stomach condition that can be fatal).

Perfection always comes with a price.

Thinking about that price led me to think about the parade of dogs I’ve been lucky enough to know throughout my life. Nearly all of them have been mutts, and you could tell just by looking at them. The dogs I’ve loved have had crooked teeth and scrawny butts. They walked a little sideways or drooled from one side of the mouth. They were all, in their own way, perfectly imperfect.

My wife and I had the great luck to live with a yellow Lab mutt, Fred, who arrived in our lives as a stray puppy in the ditch in our old front yard. We never figured out exactly what else he was. Our vet thought he had some German shorthaired pointer in him, which made sense, because occasionally he’d stop in the middle of the yard and go on point. As far as we could tell, he was never pointing at anything in particular. Something in his DNA must have told him he should point now and then, just to keep up the family tradition.

Fred wouldn’t have lasted five minutes in a show ring. His back end sometimes strayed when he walked, like a fishtailing car. But he was the most loving and lovable dog I’ve ever been around. Never once, in his entire life, did he harm another living thing. As far as I know, he never even ate a bug.

It broke our hearts when old age, and a tumor on his liver, finally got him. But he made it to 14 and a half years—more than two years longer than the average life of a purebred yellow Lab. I think of that now as extra innings, free baseball, a second helping of dessert. He blessed our lives and part of the blessing was how long he stayed.

There were many purebreds in Dogland that I would have taken home in a second if I’d had the chance. It was breathtaking to watch them sometimes, like being in the front row at an NBA game. But if you gave me all the dogs in the world to choose from, I’d start with the ones that are a little lopsided, asymmetrical, funky. Our quirks are features, not flaws. Give me a mutt.

M y mom died six years ago, a few hours after I sat on the edge of her bed at her nursing home in Georgia and talked with her for the last time. My wife, Alix, and I were staying with my brother and his wife, who lived just down the road. My brother got the phone call not long after midnight. He woke me up, and we went down to the nursing home and walked the dim, quiet hallway to her room. She was in her bed, cold and still. I touched her face. But I didn’t cry.

Two years earlier, the veterinarian had come to our house in Charlotte, North Carolina, to see our old dog, Fred. He was a yellow Lab mix I had found as a puppy in the ditch in front of our house. We had him for 14 and a half years, until he got a tumor on his liver. He was too old for surgery to make any sense. Alix and I held him in our laps as the vet gave him two shots, one to make him sleep, the other to make him still. All three of us cried as he eased away in our arms.

By any measure, I loved my mom more than our dog. If I could bring one back, I’d pick her 100 times out of 100. So why, in the moment of their passing, did I cry for him but not for her?

That was one of the many questions in the back of my mind as I began to explore a fascinating subculture in the dog world: the dog-show circuit that culminates in the biggest event of all, the Westminster Dog Show. I wanted to understand the dogs and their human caretakers, the bond between them, and, more broadly, why the loss of a dog can hit so hard—harder, sometimes, than the loss of a person.

I spent three years on the road with show dogs, handlers, judges, and other dog people who roam the country like Deadheads with hair spray. I came to think of the world of dog shows as a traveling theme park called Dogland. It has its own rules, its own language, its own blend of sights and sounds and scents. It is generally a pleasant place. But it is built on a foundation of loss. Because everybody involved knows the cruel math built into loving a pet: Chances are, it will die before you do.

At a show near my home in Charlotte, I met a dog breeder and handler named Michelle Parris. Parris shows Italian greyhounds, known in Dogland as “IGs” or “iggies.” If a standard greyhound is a Dodge Charger, and a whippet is a Mustang, an iggie is a Mini Cooper. Regular greyhounds run 60 to 70 pounds , but a standard iggie weighs about 10. Parris loves iggies’ delicacy, their playfulness, the gorgeous S curves of their hind legs and back and belly. She used to show them frequently—even got one of her dogs into Westminster.

But in 2019, her life began to crumble. It started when she and her longtime partner, Mike, broke up. They split on good terms—he continued to back her dog-show dreams, emotionally and financially—but she decided to step away from the ring for a while.

In early 2020, COVID hit, and dog shows were canceled all over the United States. That fall, Mike died of heart failure. And the following March, one of Parris’s favorite dogs, Sky Guy, got sick. She drove him to a vet in West Virginia who is known in Dogland as an IG expert. He told her that Sky Guy had an incurable autoimmune disease. IGs usually live for 14 or 15 years. Sky Guy was not quite six.

Mike’s death had hurt Parris. But Sky Guy’s death nearly broke her. She had panic attacks. Friends came to help take care of her other dogs. Months passed before she was able to feel stable again. She told me this story in the middle of an arena lobby, with the general chaos of a dog show flowing all around us. It was a long, tearful conversation. But every so often, she would pause our chat to point out an especially beautiful dog walking by.

“We’re very passionate about our dogs,” she said.

Dogland is an odd place in that way. The dogs there are commodities—purebreds designed to draw top dollar for their “show quality,” the physical excellence and charisma required to become a champion show dog. The best of the best make money for their owners by delivering litters of other potential champions, or providing sperm that can be frozen indefinitely to create a lineage decades down the road. (A company called Infinity Canine sets up a tent at some big shows to collect semen from promising males. Their slogan: “Dogs love to come to us!”)

But dogs aren’t widgets. The people I met in Dogland had genuine affection for their animals, even when they were handlers who might be juggling 15 or 20 dogs at a single show. Most of the top handlers don’t own their dogs. The owners send them off to the handlers like parents might send a child who has a booming forehand off to a tennis academy. A show dog’s peak is four or five years at most. And then the handler, after bonding deeply with that dog, has to give it back to its owners. It is a rehearsal of sorts for the permanent parting.

M aybe the best way to illustrate the idea that people sometimes mourn harder for dogs than for humans is to tell the story of one grieving middle-aged retiree.

His wife, Helen, died after a long illness. Her death knocked him sideways. She left him a final gift and a note to go with it: John, I’m sorry I can’t be there for you. But you still need something, someone, to love, so start with this. John wept as he put down the note and looked at the crate that came with it. Inside was a beagle puppy named Daisy. John and Daisy bonded.

One day John was at a gas station, filling up his Mustang—a car his wife had bought him. Another car pulled up to the pumps. The men in the car turned out to be Russian-mob thugs. One of them, the mob boss’s son, admired John’s car. He asked John to name a price for it. John said it was not for sale. This upset the son.

That night, the thugs broke into John’s house, beat him senseless, and stole the car. During the beating, Daisy ran through the room whimpering. The mob boss’s son told one of the thugs to shut her up.

When John regained consciousness, he saw a trail of blood on the floor. Daisy had crawled to him and died by his side.

And that was the moment John Wick decided to come out of retirement and return to his life as the world’s most feared assassin.

I should probably be clear right here that John Wick is the fictional hero of the massively popular movie franchise starring Keanu Reeves. Just roll with the character for a moment. John Wick loved his wife more than anything. But the death of his dog released something deep inside him. He grieved hard. So damn hard. And the anger it released was a renewable resource: According to online body counts, during the course of four movies, John Wick kills more than 400 people—including those Russian-mob thugs.

At one point in the first movie, after Daisy is killed and John sets out to avenge her, the mob boss captures John and prepares to have him executed. The mob boss makes the fatal mistake of so many movie villains: First, he wants to talk. He has something to say: “It was just a fucking car. Just a fucking dog.”

“Just a dog,” John says, and lowers his head.

He goes on: “When Helen died, I lost everything, until that dog arrived on my doorstep. A final gift from my wife. In that moment, I received some semblance of hope. An opportunity to grieve unalone.”

Moments later, he escapes his captors and resumes his trail of vengeance.

You already know this story if you are one of the millions of people who have watched the John Wick movies. But some people know only one detail. Because, before deciding whether to see John Wick , they looked the movie up on a website created to answer a particular question about any movie. The question is embedded in the site’s name: doesthedogdie.com .

There, they discovered the answer was yes. And they decided they could not watch.

O f course, it’s not just the members of the Dogland road show or characters in movies who mourn their dogs deeply. One of the people I interviewed for the book was Scott Van Pelt, the anchor of the late-night SportsCenter broadcast on ESPN. In 2022, he gave a moving on-air eulogy for his family’s Rhodesian ridgeback, Otis. Van Pelt heard from thousands of viewers all over the world. I talked with him not long after about why Otis meant so much.

“There have been a couple of moments after he died that you just come in and sit there and know that he’s not coming and it’s just—”

“That absence, right?” I said.

“Oh God, it’s so heavy,” he said. “I’ve lost people. I’ve lost my dad and I’ve lost grandparents and it’s not comparative, but the difference is that this animal was with us every day of our life and in all ways of our life and was here every moment of our children’s lives. He’s the corner puzzle piece. So many things connect to that. You could put your whole puzzle together, and there’s that one corner that’s missing.”

Van Pelt was pointing to a couple of the reasons I think the death of a pet can hit harder, in the moment, than the death of a human loved one. The simplest reason is that, as he said, a pet is around you all the time. Most people don’t spend as many continuous hours around their parents, other family members, friends, even their grown kids. In many cases, a pet lives with its owner nearly every minute of its life, from wriggling puppyhood to final sleep. Its absence is profound.

The deeper reason is that our relationships with humans are far more complicated. We argue even with the people we love, and sometimes the conflicts crack us wide open. Every birthday, every Thanksgiving, builds upon a long and sometimes fraught history. There are things we can’t forget, though they might be long forgiven. Loving another human being can leave bruises and scars, even if every single one is worth it.

Loving a pet is simpler. Dogs, especially, live to please us. It is the way they have made themselves essential to our lives. Dogs don’t fight at the dinner table or have obnoxious political viewpoints. They don’t slam the door when they leave the house. They don’t ask why you’re not married yet.

When we mourn a dog, we mourn a life we often witnessed in full, and a source of something close to an unadulterated good.

When we mourn a human, even one we love deeply, our emotions are messier. That does not make our grief lesser. It just makes it part of a bigger experience, like an egg mixed into batter. At some point, you can no longer separate it out.

After spending all that time in Dogland, I came to think of it this way: When a loved one dies, it matters more. But when a dog dies, sometimes we feel it more.

W hy did I cry in the moment for my dog and not my mom? Maybe for all the reasons I’ve already talked about. But also, maybe, because I had cried for her, and with her, so many times already. I cried in her arms when I was a boy and fell in a patch of sandspurs. I cried on the phone when I got fired from my internship and had to slink back home. I cried when we argued about her smoking and my eating. I cried laughing when she would tell the story about the time the neighbor’s python got loose. I cried when we moved her out of her house and we both knew she was never coming back. I cried at her bedside in her final days when we said we loved each other. My grief for her was paid in full.

A dog might be able to sense those moments, but all we really have to go on is our own feelings. As close as humans are to dogs—a connection formed over thousands of years—parts of their world are still unknowable to us. That space between feeling and knowing—that’s where the tears live. But the people you love, if the connection is deep enough, become knowable in every dimension. And if you love someone enough, the tears don’t wait for death. They’re an essential part of life.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a potential GOP vice presidential candidate, is defending her actions after an excerpt from her upcoming book reveals she executed a dog on her family farm.

Noem reportedly writes that her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, got loose and killed a neighbor’s chickens — after which Noem lured the wirehair pointer to a gravel pit and shot it.

“I hated that dog,” reads an excerpt obtained by The Guardian . The book is slated to hit shelves May 7.

According to the 52-year-old Republican — whom Donald Trump is considering making his running mate in November’s election — Cricket was aggressive and untrainable, and the chicken-killing incident was the final straw.

Noem reportedly describes the “dangerous” dog as a “picture of pure joy” as she gleefully “grabbed one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another.”

Noam also claims the dog snapped at her as she attempted to stop the bloody scene.

Noem reimbursed the chickens’ owners for their dead birds and helped clean up the mess. But at that moment, Noem writes, she decided Cricket had to die.

While she was at it, Noem reportedly opted to kill a “disgusting, musky, rancid” goat her family owned as well. She dragged the animal into the same gravel pit and shot him too — but the “nasty and mean” goat survived its first gunshot. Noem went back to her truck, reloaded, and shot him again.

The right-wing politician apparently tells that story in the book to illustrate that “difficult, messy and ugly” things sometimes have to be done in life and in politics, according to The Guardian.

Noem linked to The Guardian’s article on X, where she explained, “We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm.”

According to her tweet, Noem’s family recently added three horses that had been with her family for 25 years to the body count.

Noem found herself cleaning up a different kind of mess last month when a nonprofit advocacy group sued the governor for making an “undisclosed advertisement ” for a Texas dental practice that allegedly violated consumer protection laws.

An arthritis drug helps old dogs, but some owners worry about side effects

Around the country, veterinarians are prescribing a breakthrough new arthritis drug for dogs — Librela — which is helping aging pets get moving again by easing the aches and pains of osteoarthritis.

Ana Maria Cepeda, a veterinarian at North River Animal Hospital in Parrish, Fla., said her first patient was her 14-year-old pit bull mix who in the past has relied on a concoction of pain medication and supplements to cope with severe arthritis and joint issues. “It showed excellent promise on my own dog,” she said. “That gave me more confidence to start trying it in other dogs.”

But not everyone is convinced. Fears about a range of side effects have spread rapidly on social media. A Facebook group shares stories from pet owners alleging that after being given the drug, their dogs had trouble walking or suffered kidney failure . An online petition has been circulating pushing to recall the drug until more study is done. The Food and Drug Administration says its reviewing reports of adverse events.

Veterinarians and the drugmaker say Librela has been shown to be safe and effective. A variety of factors may explain concerns about side effects, including the fact that the drugs are often used in older dogs, who may have a range of health issues.

We spoke to experts about Librela. Here’s what to know.

What is Librela and how does it work?

Librela, made by Zoetis, is the brand name for a monthly injectable drug to treat canine osteoarthritis , a condition that affects an estimated 80 percent of all dogs 8 years or older and as many as 35 percent of dogs of all ages. The drug is an anti-nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody.

The drug’s active ingredient is called bedinvetmab, a monoclonal antibody designed to target nerve growth factor, or NGF, a naturally produced protein that’s important for fetal and early development of the nervous system. In adulthood, NGF plays a role in pain transmission and the release of pro-inflammatory molecules. It’s found in high levels in dogs with osteoarthritis.

Librela works by neutralizing NGF in the joint, essentially shutting down the pain pathway and lowering the overall amount of NGF produced. “It reduces how many signals are going to the brain saying, ‘Hey, this hurts,’” said Katie Bennett, an anesthesia and pain management specialist at the Veterinary Specialty Center in Bannockburn, Ill. It also helps alleviate swelling, which causes discomfort.

It’s recommended that dogs receive a minimum of two doses 28 days apart to determine if it can help reduce their pain.

How long has Librela been available?

Librela launched in the United States in October , but it has been used in Europe for the last three years. A sister drug, Solensia, also by Zoetis, has been used to treat osteoarthritis in cats since 2022.

What are the known side effects?

According to Zoetis , side effects can include bacterial skin infections, dermatitis and renal and urinary disorders, including urinary tract infections. In Europe, elevated blood urea nitrogen, which may indicate a kidney issue, was a side effect.

More than 12 million doses of Librela have been sold globally over the last three years, and a fraction of the dogs using Librela (less than 0.20 percent) have experienced “an adverse event,” said Robert Polzer, president of research and development at Zoetis.

Polzer described Librela as “a very safe product.” The company takes adverse events “very seriously,” Polzer said, and continues to collect and analyze data. “To date, we haven’t seen any signals emerge as far as causation between Librela” and the negative outcomes being reported, he said.

“Every medication, whether a human or companion animal medication, has the potential for risk and adverse events,” Polzer said. “Certainly for any pet owner who’s had that experience with their pets, we are quite empathetic.”

On social media, dog owners say their pups’ mobility appeared to decline after using the drug, citing hind leg paralysis in some cases and an inability to walk. Others say their dogs experienced anorexia, lost control of their bowels or experienced kidney issues after using the drug.

Veterinarians said any adverse events should be reported. But they emphasize the drug’s largely positive results.

How much research has been conducted on Librela?

Two clinical trials in the United States and Europe recruited a total of 559 dogs and compared Librela with a placebo for three months each. Neither the dog owners nor the veterinary clinic personnel administering the doses knew if a pet was receiving the real treatment or a placebo.

In the U.S. study , 47.4 percent of dogs receiving Librela showed improvement after the first shot based on owner assessments, compared with 36.6 percent in the placebo group. In the European study , 43.5 percent improved after the first shot, compared with 16.9 percent on placebo. In both studies, the improvements were statistically meaningful. Adverse events were similar in the treatment and placebo groups. After three months of treatment in the European study, 89 dogs in the Librela group (63 percent) had responded positively based on owner and veterinarian assessments, and continued the treatment in a six-month open label phase of the study.

Anecdotally, veterinarians report success with the drug. Union Veterinary Clinic in Washington, D.C., has administered Librela to 49 dogs since October, and the majority are routinely receiving shots, according to Allison Gross, veterinarian and co-owner of the practice. Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston has administered approximately 350 shots, with largely positive results, said Susan O’Bell, veterinarian and internal medicine service director at Angell.

What animals should be given the drug?

Patient selection is important, vets say. The drug should only be prescribed to healthy dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis and is not recommended for dogs with kidney or neurological issues. The drug is not recommended for dogs who have limping or lameness from another cause, such as a cruciate tear, bone tumors or back or disc injuries. Librela is not recommended for dogs under 12 months, who are pregnant or lactating.

Most veterinarians recommend bloodwork, a urinalysis and possibly other diagnostic tests before prescribing. “A lot is dependent too on the conversations with the client and what their ultimate goal is,” Cepeda said. “Some people, it’s a quality-of-life issue, some people have difficulty medicating, and some people have tried everything under the sun and are desperate for something else.”

Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease, and vets say controlling chronic pain requires time and patience. See how your dog responds to Librela, and discuss with your vet lowering the dosage of other medications.

“It is not a quick fix, not a magic bullet,” Bennett said. “Clients will have to work at it for a couple of months to learn a sweet spot.”

Weight management, water therapy, physiotherapy, laser treatments, acupuncture and a number of other therapeutics can collectively help manage not just joint pain but the disease’s overall effect on the body. “This is the long haul,” O’Bell said. Librela is “one more thing we have in our arsenal.”

How do you know if the drug is working?

Bennett asks owners to keep a daily journal of their dog’s progress and provides owners with a worksheet to measure improvement. Veterinarians suggest taking pictures and videos documenting changes in your dog’s body language, gait and demeanor.

Vets recommend trying two injections over two months before discontinuing Librela, which may not work for every patient. Some patients at Angell in Boston stopped Librela because owners did not see any big improvements, O’Bell said.

Bennett took her own senior dog off Librela after she developed a urinary tract infection. Not every dog will have a miraculous turn around, veterinarians caution. For some, the drug’s efficacy eventually wears off.

For dogs who regain their spark and spunk, experts advise easing them back into play. “Some dogs have become so active they injure themselves, because they go from not moving much at all to running around,” Gross said.

Noem Reportedly Describes Executing Her Pet in New Book: ‘I Hated That Dog’

Reaching for an example of her unflinching preparedness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if it needs to be done, Kristi Noem landed on a chilling example: the time she killed her pet dog, Cricket, in an execution-style gravel pit slaying.

The South Dakota governor, whose unbreakable devotion to Donald Trump has propelled her to somewhere near the top of his list of his potential 2024 running mates , reportedly included her disturbing tale of canicide in a book set to be published next month. “I guess if I were a better politician I wouldn’t tell the story here,” Noem writes, according to The Guardian , which obtained a copy.

According to the newspaper, Noem recounts the story of how she not only killed Cricket—a female “wirehair pointer, about 14 months old”—but then also proceeded to botch the killing of an unnamed goat that she owned to which she had taken a disliking.

Noem reportedly writes in her book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward, that Cricket had an “aggressive personality” and that Noem hoped taking her on a pheasant hunt with older dogs would help to calm the young Cricket down. Instead, Noem writes that Cricket spoiled the hunt by being “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life.”

The Republican reportedly writes that she failed to get Cricket under control with voice commands and an electronic collar, but then an even worse incident occurred after the hunt had ended. While traveling home, Noem writes that she stopped to speak to a local family—at which point Cricket escaped her truck and set about killing the family’s chickens, getting hold of one bird at a time, “crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another.”

The governor reportedly writes that Cricket tried to bite her when she eventually managed to grab the dog. The governor adds that she apologized profusely to the chickens’ weeping owner and cut the traumatized family a check “for the price they asked.” She also stuck around to help to clear up the aftermath of the massacre.

“I hated that dog,” Noem reportedly writes, adding that Cricket was simply “untrainable” and “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with.” It was then that she realized “I had to put her down,” she adds.

Noem explains that she grabbed her gun and took Cricket to a gravel pit. “It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “But it had to be done.” Afterward, she writes, she decided she also needed to kill a male goat she owned that was “nasty and mean” because it was uncastrated, complaining that the buck “loved to chase” Noem’s children around and would wreck their clothes by knocking them down.

She reportedly writes of the goat that she “dragged him to a gravel pit” like Cricket, but the killing did not go as smoothly. The goat jumped when she pulled the trigger, Noem says, meaning the goat survived the shot. She adds that she went to her truck to get another shell and then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down.”

Noem says that a construction crew had seen her killing both the dog and the goat. She also writes that when her daughter, Kennedy, came home from school, she “looked around confused” and asked: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”
