Using Technology to Enhance Your Presentation

Tips to help you stay in balance between your presentation and your presentation technology.

Technology and presentations have always gone hand-in-hand.  But truly great presenters make it appear seamless, forging a silent partnership between technology and presenter that allows each to do what they do best.  Here are some tips to help you stay in balance between your presentation and your presentation technology.

Unless you’re a riveting $100,000/day nationally recognized keynote speaker, you’ve had to try to balance presentation delivery with presenting technology. To be honest, we haven’t always done a stellar job as presenters. Some fearful presenters hide behind their technology to take focus away from mind-numbing content while the more bold wear it like a badge of honor. But in the end analysis, the truly great presenters forge a silent partnership between technology and presenter that allows each to do what they do best. Here are some tips to help you stay in balance.

Tip 1: The very best technology is stealthy

We get no incremental points with an audience because we enjoy playing with our presentation hardware. In fact, it can create anxiety if they sense last minute technology challenges. Get there early enough to set up, get an image on the wall and have your title slide displaying 20-30 minutes before your audience arrives. This is in your best interest as well as theirs. You don’t need the grief of last minute projector/laptop adjustments and they don’t need to be a part of the behind the scenes efforts that make your presentation possible. Today’s small and quieter projectors mean lower profile technology and less distraction for your audience. If you’re integrating live video from a VCR, learn to transition seamlessly between computer and VCR with a single non-dramatic click on the remote. If you have multiple presenters, use a switch box to quickly toggle between laptops so time (and focus) is not lost on less important matters. Bottom line, invisible technology serves us better than technology that displaces presenters by virtual of size, noise or undo attention.

Tip 2: A remote mouse is not a death ray.

Presenters everywhere have discovered the freedom of non-tethered presenting. With the remote mouse capability of many of today’s projectors or 3rd party remote devices, the potential exists to transition through images without fanfare. Unfortunately, with any presentation technology, we need to learn to use it correctly. Some presenters, with straight-arm, eye squinting accuracy, point their remote IR devices at the target to signal the advance of each presentation slide but miss the point. If we are to keep focus squarely on the presenter, it’s essential we practice sufficiently with the device so that images appear to move/change on screen effortlessly. This type of fluidity insures that our thoughts are not broken up like periods in a paragraph – but flow smoothly from image to image – almost at will. Practice talking through your slide transitions as imagery changes on screen. This simple technique alone will set you apart from the presentation crowd.

Tip 3: Good presenters can direct audience’s focus

Let’s face it, we want an audiences total attention. In fact, we get bummed out when someone two rows back appears disinterested or is checking accumulated email during the presentation. The frequent presenter realizes that the potential for competition is present between screen and presenter. Unfortunately, the outcome of that competition is often determined by who is bigger and louder. That battle is won with brains not brawn.

Presenters need to better refine the art of guiding the audience’s eye and directing their focus. Remember, the audience will take your lead. As you take a few steps forward towards them, their attention naturally moves to you. When there is movement on screen , it quickly shifts there. (This is a great case for only an appropriate use of animation effects). When you blank out the screen altogether (“b” key when in PowerPoint) attention goes to the single source of visual reinforcement – you. When you take a few steps back and towards the screen and focus your attention there, the audiences focus quickly follows. We are not helpless pawns in this process. We are the chess masters orchestrating all the elements of the “game.” Our delivery “plan” is as much a part of the presentation process as the graphics themselves. How well are you planning?

The ultimate goal for every presenter is to ensure that our presentations are more about products, not lumens- partnerships not resolution values – strategic messages not cables and duct tape. But our occasional preoccupation with the mechanics over the message means we often start our presentations at a distinct disadvantage. Our mental preparation gets diverted at a critical time. How prepared are you? Projectors manufacturers have done their part with smaller, brighter and quieter technology, now it’s time we remember what our role is and stick to it.

During my college days, I often saw professors present their slides up at the podium. After seeing dozens and dozens of presentations since then, I’ve noticed they all have one thing in common: technology.

I am still attending presentations on a regular basis, but now they’re more professional and business-centered than those of my college days. As stated, all of these presentations have one thing in common. All of them use technology .

Technology can improve the overall quality of your presentation in many ways. But it is just one aspect of the presentation. The other factor is you . Your preparedness and presence of mind during the presentation is tremendously important.

How Well Do You Need to Prepare for Your Presentation?

You can easily differentiate between a well-planned presentation and a crammed, less organized presentation. Cramming too much into a presentation will cause you to fail in delivering the key message to your audience. Additionally, your presentation can exceed the time allotted for your presentation and this can hurt your credibility and your business.

Going into a conference room knowing that you’ve thoroughly prepared for your presentation gives you confidence. This boosts the quality of your presentation and your authority. Your message will be delivered with ease and efficiency.

I’ve also noticed that professionals that are prepared for their piece have mastered the tools that they need for their presentation. They use different kinds of technologies, ranging from PowerPoint presentations to augmented reality. And they have a full grasp of the technology that they are using.

Here are some tools that professionals commonly use in their presentations:

PowerPoint has been a stable platform from which to make your presentation. Although it’s an old dog in the competition, many professionals still use this platform because it is easy to use and readily available.

You can customize your slides and design it your own way. There are free PowerPoint templates that you can choose from online. In this way, you can customize your PowerPoint design to help you convey your message.

Keynote is Apple’s presentation software and an alternative to Microsoft’s software. It offers a variety of templates pre-installed on the software. You can also choose from different beautiful typographies.

Keynote is free to use as long as you log in with your Apple ID. This software is good for professionals that need practical presentation software.

The idea behind this presentation software goes beyond the traditional slide-by-slide format. In Prezi, you create a free-flowing web of ideas from a topic. You can then zoom in on these ideas to guide you and your audience throughout your presentation.

If you’re looking to add a creative touch to your presentation, Prezi is the way to go. You can access it free with limited functionality or get the whole package with their paid plans.

How Technology Improves Your Presentations

1. Make Interactive Presentations

Scrap those boring pamphlets. Technology makes your presentation more engaging and now, you can interact with your audience and find out what they have in mind.

You can also do live interactions with your presentation. You can draw, edit, and add content to your presentation through technology.

As an example, we will look at how Mentimeter is interactive and engaging for the audience. This presentation software allows you to invite your audience to interact with your slides. You can put a poll together or do a quick survey so you can learn more about your audience.

2. Expand Your Audience Reach

In prior years, we traveled to different conference rooms in different locations in order to make our presentation to a particular audience. But now, we can have a virtual meeting and a virtual presentation as well.

Your presentation can now reach audiences on the other side of the world without buying a plane ticket. All you need to have is a Zoom account and a good internet connection. You can live-stream your presentation and send invite links to your audience so they can join from their remote locations.

3. Provides Prior Knowledge of Your Audience

As a presenter, it is very important to know your target audience before any presentation. This action minimizes errors and maximizes your presentation’s impact. Your audience can and will relate to your presentation if you craft it for them.

Social media apps like Facebook and Twitter provide an avenue for you to promote your presentation and invite prospects as your audience. You can also host a webinar and post the invite link on your social media accounts.

Social media can be used to gather information about your audience. This builds interest from your audience, you’re able to hold their attention, and helps convert them to prospects.

Technology allows you to make 3D models for audience interaction. This holds the audience’s attention and the look is tech-savvy.

Embedding a 3D model into your presentation invites your audience to interact with your presentation. You can access these 3D models through PowerPoint 3D or other capable 3D software.

You can change how a 3D model looks in this software. This allows you to show your audience an actual 3D representation of your product that you can rotate, zoom, and pan through for better viewing.

5. Engage in VR Meetings

Virtual reality (VR) has now become our reality because of the coronavirus pandemic. And it’s not bad at all. Technology now allows us to shake hands with investors, even from miles away.

With the promising advancement that this technology offers, maybe this will replace Skype and Zoom in the future. Who knows?

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

Presentation technology refers to a wide range of applications that enable instructors to display information during a lecture. Students also use these applications when they make presentations as part of class assignments. Used to help organize presentations, show examples, and provide visual interest, these applications usually allow for some combination of text and graphics as well as embedded video. While Microsoft PowerPoint is the most commonly used, there are a range of applications that fall under this category. 

• Displaying lecture outlines, visual examples (photos, graphs, diagrams, videos) and/or instructions for classroom activities
• Displaying sample test questions or concept questions to check student understanding (possibly used with personal response systems)
• Creating opportunities for students to organize content and present to peers as part of a lecture
• Providing "skeletal" outlines that facilitate student notetaking
• Providing a resource that guides students' review of lecture material (alone or in connection with audio/video recordings of lecture)

Tips for using slides effectively

While it is easy to create slides, it is also easy to overwhelm students with these programs. Common problems include showing far too many slides in a given time period, text-heavy slides that are often difficult to read, overuse of special effects, and slideshows that are designed to keep the instructor on track rather than supporting student learning.

In addition, slide-based lectures can put students in a very passive mode of trying to absorb and record large amounts of content without having the opportunities for active engagement and processing that are necessary for understanding and long-term retention of information. Finally, processing visuals (particularly text) at the same time as listening to a lecture can create cognitive overload that interferes with learning. 

General Recommendations for Formatting Slides

• Use font size large enough to be visible, including captions and legends (look at your slides from the back of your actual classroom to check)
• Use legible color combinations (keep in mind when refering to different color items that some students are color blind)
• Use graphs rather than word-heavy charts when possible
• Display only essential information and limit the number of words/bullets per slide
• Use slides for outlines and examples rather than trying to capture every point you make
• Display only the information that will help students; find other ways to keep yourself on track for the presentation
• Distribute the slides or another outline-style handout in advance to facilitate note taking
• Avoid overly flashy transitions and special effects that can be distracting 
• Have a backup plan should the technology fail

Recommendations from Research on Promoting Learning with PowerPoint

• Make slides available to students in advance of the lecture. Students retain more of a lecture when they have access to the instructor’s slides. When they do not have such handouts, students often try to copy down both the words on the slides and the notes from what they hear.
• Minimize the use of animation to introduce new points to a single slide. PowerPoint allows a presenter to reveal each bullet point on a slide separately. However, research indicates that such an approach leads to lower retention of information, possibly because there is less time to absorb all of the material on the slide.
• Use an assertion-evidence approach to constructing slides, instead of using the default format of a title followed by bullet subpoints. With this approach, the title becomes a 1-2 line sentence that makes an assertion. The rest of the slide shows evidence to support that assertion (preferably using visuals or a combination of visuals and short explanatory text). This approach helps avoid oversimplification inherent in PowerPoint’s linear approach.
• Segment your presentation and integrate active learning. This can range from simply pausing to allow the audience time to digest the material, to having students take a moment to write down what was confusing to them, answer “clicker” questions, discuss case studies, etc. CRLT’s website has a few   resources for incorporating active learning into lectures. • Provide names and definitions of key terms in advance of the lecture. Such “pre-training” allows students to better understand a complex description of a how a system works as a whole.
• Weed out any extraneous information included in the presentation. Such extraneous information puts additional demands on working memory, and decreases the ability to process and retain information.
• Signal to your audience which information is incidental (e.g., an anecdote relating to the topic) and which is essential. This can be helpful in minimizing the cognitive load of the presentation so that students are better able to process important information.
• Make sure that on-screen images and text are well aligned and synchronized, and make explicit which text applies to which image. A mismatch between visuals and verbal explanations can cause interference rather than increasing understanding.

Tips for using Prezi (or other non-linear presentation technology) creatively

Suggestions on best uses and practices for using Prezi: 

• build a resources and links (images, text, video) and build a variety of paths for connecting the material based on the audience and the place of the presentation in the curriculum; 
• experiment with a non-linear approach to a presentation in which your path through the material is not predetermined but driven by the interests of the audience; 
• use Prezi as an alternative to actually presenting, allowing audience members to work through the Prezi taking notes on important/useful points, and then engaing in a discussion in groups or with the whole class about the topic at hand; 
• use Prezi for helping students organize material, either by having them take your Prezi and think about how they’d present it, or by asking them to go through the process of laying out important information and then organizing it into a Prezi (a much less rigidly linear process than using PowerPoint).

PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides offer similar linear presentation style defaults (i.e. one primarily works through the slides one-at-time from beginning to end). PowerPoint can work across PC and Mac platforms, while Keynote is Mac specific and also works with iPads. Google Slides is part of the Google Apps suite designed to promote collaboration. This is a very pared down version of a presentation tool that allows multiple people to collaborate on a single presentation and store files on the web so they are available anywhere. Files can be imported into PowerPoint and made more complex.

An alternative to these products is a non-linear presentation tool, Prezi. Prezi is a web-based tool with different logic from those described above. It is based on a non-linear "palette" onto which a presenter can paste up combinations of text, images, video. Nonlinearity allows for different paths through the same information and development of a presentation based on graphic overview and easy embedding of YouTube videos. However, non-linearity can be both a challenge and an opportunity depending on your topic, how you organize your ideas, and your teaching style. In addition, zoom functions can lead to sea sickness if not used well.

Effectively Using Technology in Annual Meetings and Presentations

The explosion of technology over the past decade has made it much easier to entertain meeting participants, particularly those attending large events like annual corporate meetings. The advances, however, have not solved the age-old issue of audience engagement , since, too often, technology becomes a distraction rather than an enhancement. To put it bluntly, giving the same presentation and simply jazzing it up with additional graphics or multiple screens is no different than a teacher using a modern Smart Board instead of an old chalkboard.

PowerPoint ® typically comes to mind when thinking about incorporating technology. There are more options to consider, however.

• Prezi is an alternative to PowerPoint.
• Live polling can engage your audience directly.
• Professionally shot videos of your products in action, customer testimonials, or the global nature of your business can add tremendous value.
• And you can allow more people to attend – albeit virtually – through live streaming .

With this in mind, the following pros and cons are key to planning your integration of technology into more effective annual meetings, presentations, and conferences:

The presenter and message are the most important aspect of any presentation.

A dynamic presenter and compelling message is more important than any technological enhancement. Using technology is necessary, but in the end, technology cannot carry the weight for a poor presenter or a mediocre message. Any technology used in a meeting or presentation   should enhance the message ; the technology should never be used as the centerpiece. Speakers should be practiced and prepared; messaging should be polished.  Effective presentations are obsessively focused.  The best presentations are ones where the speakers are clear because they are focused on the core message; technology should reinforce that message.

Nothing can save a poorly organized agenda.

No amount of technology can compensate for inadequate planning. Guest speakers who don’t inspire, presenters who lecture rather than converse with the audience, sessions that run too long, or sessions that are not relevant to the attendees or unique to the annual meeting overpower any use of technology and make even excellent integration meaningless in the end.

Quality is more important than glitz.

For top-level presentations and events like annual meetings, using professional videos and high-quality visual images is a must. The investment in having a professional graphics designer create materials that bring attention to the most important elements of your company’s story is well worth it. Remember that your guests are attending many annual meetings in addition to yours – and you want yours to stand out from the pack.   Exceptional videos and images engage more the audience more effectively , so they can reach more people in more powerful ways.

Technology is best used to enhance content or facilitate participation not possible otherwise.

There are some instances when technology can make it possible to do things that would not be possible otherwise. These situations cannot be ignored or minimized in exceptional annual meetings. Microsoft PowerPoint is older than 30 now. In addition, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are increasing their prevalence. By 2020, the VR and AR market is estimated to reach $150 billion. Holograms and 3D animations also stand out as other technologies used to enrich presentations.

As a designer who designed presentations for different sectors, I had the chance to see how powerful the use of technology was for storytelling and engagement. However, on the other hand, when it was used incorrectly, I realised how technology dominates the whole presentation and prevents the message from reaching the audience.

What should the ones who want to use technology in their presentation and to confront the audience with the new generation presentations care about? What technologies should we use and where? Let’s talk now about the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in the presentation and take a look at what technologies we can use to design an effective presentation.

More attractive and easy-to focus

Presenters and presentation followers know that sometimes it is a painful task to keep attention alive during the presentation. Therefore, people who present and design the presentation should take this issue to the center. If the audience doesn’t really follow you, what you say loses importance.

One of the biggest advantages of the technology used correctly in the presentation is that it attracts the attention and prevents the distraction. In parallel with your project, you need to determine the most suitable one among many ideas such as 3D visualization of data accumulated over the years or creating interactivity through a mobile application.

Better-explained messages

Especially when the audience is not an expert in the subject matter, you need to make sure that what you say is explanatory. You can perform a more descriptive presentation using the possibilities of technology instead of just telling it with speech and text projected to the screen. For this, you can take advantage of visuals such as interactive graphics and 3D models created with real-time data.

May cause distraction

The use of technology in the presentation can be used to allow the audience focus easier as well as it may cause distractions. Application mistakes, such as excessive use of technology or incorrect creation of interactive fiction, disrupt the focus of the presentation, making it difficult for you to draw the audience’s attention to the desired points. Using the optimal technology and cooperating with experienced presentation designers must be your bullet points to consider in order to stay away from this disadvantage.

May disrupt the presentation flow

If the use of technology is in more complex structures than you can control through short rehearsals or repetitions, the presentation flow may be out of control. The person on stage must keep the whole environment under control for a successful presentation. This means that they must be able to control the technology used. For example, if you don’t have time to rehearse, instead of controlling your presentation with radar touch or similar 3D based motion control systems, you should choose to control your presentation with an interactive armband or transparent holographic display.

What technologies can you use for effective presentation design?

You need to choose the right technology and apply it to your presentation in the best way for an effective presentation design. The first thing to do is to find out what the options are. Now, let’s take a look at some of the technologies that you can take advantage of in the presentation design.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is actually a highly descriptive name because augmented reality, abbreviated as AR, expresses digitally enriched reality with technology.

The basic skill of AR technology can be summarised as rendering a static image and location alive by animating or graphically enriching it. For example, you can scan a movie poster with the AR app on your phone to watch the trailer of the movie or scan a product ad to see a pop-up that gives information about the product.

The use of AR in a presentation makes it more impressive, making it easier for the audience to integrate into the presentation because, with augmented reality, you give the audience an experience beyond their real perception.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) offers real-time simulation and interaction. There is no distracting element for the audience who join the simulated world with equipment that covers the ear and eyes. The entire hall is in the virtual world you set up. This eliminates the possibility for your message to be missed.

The VR allows audiences to interact with the surrounding objects and direct the presentation while providing an environment in which they can move 360 degrees. Therefore, using the VR, the lifespan of your message will be longer and more impressive.

3D Technology

3D technology enables you to achieve a much more realistic visualisation and a rich presentation. In particular, PowerPoint’s 3D model feature increases the number of users taking the advantage of 3D technology in presentations, but you can use 3D images in many different presentation design applications. Moreover, you can get more impressive presentation by enriching 3D images with animation.

Interactivity

There is no doubt that interactive presentations are very impressive. So, you can benefit from the equipment such as Leap Motion, RadarTOUCH and Myo Armband.

Leap Motion lets you control the presentation by simply moving your fingers without touching anything. Especially when combined with VR or AR, a unique experience comes out.

RadarTOUCH is a laser-based technology that allows interactivity on giant screens and projection walls. The multi-touch feature allows you to design enjoyable presentations with technology that enables multiple users to use them.

Myo Armband allows you to control digital technologies wirelessly. The high-tech bracelets measure the electrical activity in your muscles to detect 5 different movements you do with your hand. When used on the stage, Myo Armband helps you grasp the audience’s attention.

On the stage or holographic tables, you can easily impress the audience using hologram technology. The 3D hologram is one of the most impressive ways of showing a physically non-existent object as if it was there, and is a commonly used new media product.

Remote Presentation

Technology has become such a pitch that we can say that distances are no longer important. Many applications such as GoToMeeting, WebEx, Zoom, Skype for Business and Personify Presenter now allow us to present even from miles away.

The most important issues for presentations are to attract the viewer’s attention, communicate the message effectively, and be descriptive. For this reason, you may consider to benefit from the opportunities offered by technology. VR, AR, 3D, Hologram, as well as the applications enabling remote presentation and interactive presentation can help you with that. However, the misuse of the technology can lead to undesirable results while if used correctly, it supports you to get lasting efficiency from your presentation.

Google Slides: How to change the size of your presentation slides

G oogle Slides has an impressive number of templates for creating beautiful presentations. It's been the go-to choice for many users who don't use Microsoft PowerPoint and an easy-to-access alternative for well-equipped Chromebooks . If your slides are too small or too wide, they may not scale well to the content shown on the screen. This guide teaches you how to change the size of the slides in your Google Slides presentation on a browser to ensure you use the correct size.

What's the difference between Google Slides templates and themes?

It depends on where the presentation is viewed. Most computers use a 16:9 aspect ratio, but mobile devices prefer a 4:3 ratio. If unsure, test the slideshow on multiple devices and decide which gives the most optimal viewing experience.

How to resize your Google Slides on a Windows computer

You can decide the size of your slides before creating your presentation. Alternatively, open an old presentation and choose to resize your slides. Check the steps below to get started.

Changing Google Slides size on a new presentation

• Open a web browser and sign in to Google Slides .
• Go to File .
• Click Page setup .
• Click the drop-down box in the Page setup window to select the aspect ratio. Choose Standard 4:3 , Widescreen 16:9 , Widescreen 16:10 , or Custom .
• After making your selection, click Apply .

All the slides maintain the same aspect ratio you selected. If you're uncertain whether any default options suit your presentation, tweak the ratio by choosing Custom .

Changing Google Slides size on a saved presentation

• Navigate to File > Open .
• Select a saved Google Slides presentation and click Open .
• In the opened Google Slides presentation, go to File and select Page setup .
• In the Page setup window, choose another aspect ratio option from the drop-down menu and click Apply .

After swapping the aspect ratio, you may need to adjust your Google Slides presentation. In this example, we swapped the aspect ratio from Standard 4:3 to Widescreen 16:9, which changes the alignment of images and text on each slide.

How to resize your Google Slides on a Chromebook

You're likely sticking to Google's ecosystem while working on a Chromebook. Google Slides becomes an essential tool when building a presentation. Google Slides works like the Windows computer version, so changing the slides' size is simple. Here's how to do it:

• On a Chromebook, open Google Slides on a Chrome tab.
• Start a new presentation or open an existing one by going to File > Open .
• Click File > Page setup .
• In the Page setup window, select the drop-down box and choose Standard 4:3 , Widescreen 16:9 , Widescreen 16:10 , or Custom .
• Click Apply .

The Google Slides app works on Chromebooks but has the same (limited) functionality as the mobile app (the app you download from the Google Play Store is the Android app ported to Chromebooks).

How to expand the size of your Google Slides presentation

Sometimes, presentations can start in the wrong view. Fullscreen mode ensures the set aspect ratio of the slideshow remains the same on the screen. However, the audience may see another view if you select the wrong mode before starting your presentation. The view you can accidentally click is Presenter View.

Inside Presenter View, the audience sees a fullscreen presentation of your Google Slides (if presented on a different screen), while you see the speaker notes written below the slides and some settings. Seeing a busier screen can distract the speaker, especially if the slides remain in autoplay . As a result, you may prefer to set up fullscreen mode. Below are the steps to ensure your Google Slides start in fullscreen mode.

How to enter fullscreen mode on Google Slides

• Open a saved Google Slides presentation on your computer.
• Click the arrow at the bottom of the Slideshow button and select Start from beginning .

Clicking the Slideshow button also puts your presentation in fullscreen mode.

How to resize your Google Slides on mobile

The slide size in Google Slides on the Android and iOS mobile apps cannot be manually changed. To get around this, open Google Slides on a computer and follow the steps above to adjust the size of your slides.

When Malcolm Turnbull talked up his "innovation agenda" after seizing the prime ministership in 2015, instead of sparking excitement about the future, all that many voters heard was that their jobs were on the line.

Innovation became code for dangerous change, according to Liberals on the frontline. While talking about tech and radical transformative change might sound bold and forward-thinking, a nervous electorate with change fatigue often only fears that life is about to get harder. Unless you take them with you on the change journey, cynicism prevails.

The truth is politics is consumed with the every day — from tax cuts, to housing prices and cost-of-living relief. But a quiet revolution is going on that threatens to change everything in our lives and oddly there is disturbingly little national debate about what we should do about it.

Our political leaders haven't really spent much time talking about it — but they should be and they should be engaging us.

Social media got away

On Q+A last Monday, former Australian Financial Review columnist and now author Joe Aston compared social media giants to big tobacco. The reality is that social media blew up so fast and accelerated so hard the consequences were barely debated.

We gave away our privacy, we overshared and allowed algorithms to tell us what we wanted and what we liked without really reckoning with what it meant and how we wanted to use it. We only started having deeper ethical deliberations after we were already addicts and had been mugged by the pace of change.

Now we are immersed in a debate about whether we should follow the US in banning TikTok because of its data vulnerability in China, but the horse has, in many ways, already bolted. Millions of young people are not only obsessed with the platform, but many have monetised it, making it a brave government that stands in the way of that basic economic reality.

In Australia, we risk doing more of the same unless we turn our collective attention to the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence in a meaningful way.

The new frontier

Artificial intelligence has already moved from sci-fi fantasy to everyday use — from facial recognition on our phones to the $100 billion ChatGPT program which generates human-like responses to every possible instruction.

I considered asking AI to write this column just to make the point. On Q+A most weeks, we've got audience members telling us they are using it to ask their questions. The opportunities are infinite, as are the concerns, from deepfakes with the potential to swing elections and damage democracy to workers being made redundant, which is an uncontested inevitability. All of it is happening in real-time. We just haven't worked out what we will accept and what we will repudiate.

When a group of industry leaders warned last year that the AI technology they were building might one day pose an existential threat to humanity and should be considered a societal risk similar to pandemics and nuclear wars, the world finally started to take notice.

"Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war," reads a one-sentence statement released by the Center for AI Safety , a nonprofit organisation. The open letter was signed by more than 350 executives, researchers and engineers working in AI.

That statement changed the game and ever since the world and nation-states like ours have been engaged. But is the pace of that engagement enough, and how do we get the balance right?

Moves to regulate AI

Last week, the European Union voted on world-leading legislation that says it will protect citizens from the possible risks of AI technology developing at incomprehensible speeds, while also maintaining innovation across Europe. Yep, there's that word again.

The EU wanted to pass the new laws since ChatGPT came along in late 2022, launching an AI race across the planet. It changed the game so quickly that most of our heads are still spinning.

The Albanese government has announced the creation of a new AI expert group to offer advice on what laws here will look like.

The group first met in February and will continue offering advice until June 30 this year. The government has said they will introduce a risk-based system to protect against the worst potential harms of AI and that risky technologies will have mandatory rules applied to them, including even independent assessments and audits. The government has said they will avoid stifling the growth of low-risk AI.

Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic, who is deeply exercised about this issue, has flagged the parameters of new laws, including plans for AI-generated content to be labelled so it can't be mistaken as real.

But even before the new laws have been finalised, AI is disrupting life as we know it.

The Sydney Morning Herald revealed last week that universities are catching hundreds of students in alleged cheating using ChatGPT or other artificial intelligence, as universities use new anti-plagiarism tools to catch people out.

An International Monetary Fund study recently predicted that AI was poised to impact about 60 per cent of all jobs in advanced economies like ours, with about half of those to benefit from AI increasing productivity and the other half to be adversely impacted. That means job losses.

Husic wants the advice of his expert group on what he has called "mandatory guardrails" for high-risk AI settings. "With expertise in law, ethics and technology, I'm confident this group will get the balance right."

Husic says that at its best, AI can help improve the quality of life and how our economy functions. "At its worst, it can distort and divide. I have concerns about how biometrics are used, social scoring for example," he says.

"And of course, the use of AI which seeks to manipulate actions with a criminal intent."

Husic says the government has already got started on key initiatives.

"We've established a short-term expert advisory group to help guide the development of mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI, they will report back in June.

"Mandatory regulation for high-risk AI could be in place as early as the end of the year."

Husic says his strategy is to build trust and transparency in AI systems and he is working with industry to develop a voluntary AI safety standard, including labelling and watermarking of AI-generated material.

But he acknowledges the threat to jobs. "As with the introduction of any new technology, we need to be aware of the potential impact on employment, keeping in mind AI will help to build new industries and create well-paid secure jobs.

"We want to allow low-risk AI to flourish unimpeded."

Regulation should be clear and focused

Last November, Husic attended the UK AI Safety Summit where Australia — along with 27 other countries — signed up to the Bletchley Declaration. He says it was a big step toward creating a safe and trustworthy international framework to tackle the risks of AI.

"Australia is closely monitoring how other countries are responding to the challenges of AI, while getting cracking on its own regulatory framework. The days of self-regulation for technology are over," he says.

The opposition says they are aware of the risks of change but are also troubled by heavy regulation and reluctant to overly regulate in a way that stifles businesses that want to adopt AI to make tasks faster and easier. They are now starting to voice their parameters for what the mid-year legislation should look like.

Shadow communications minister David Coleman told ABC News the opportunity in AI is "bigger than in any technology since the creation of the internet itself". He says it's crucial that we develop and own AI intellectual property here in Australia. "The government needs to help make that happen by encouraging investment. Much more action is needed on this."

On regulation, Coleman says we need to be very clear and focused on where we should act and where we should not. "Most aspects of AI do not require regulation, and excessive government involvement would make Australia less competitive. While there are some positive aspects of the EU AI law, it errs too much on the side of regulation," he says.

"But there are very real risks from AI that will require regulation. We must ensure that sovereign nations always determine the red lines that must not be crossed by software. Australia should be playing a leading role in working with international partners to determine these rules. At present, there is little sign that the Australian government is providing intellectual leadership on these issues."

Before the government does anything to regulate and legislate, we need to have our own reckoning as a community about how we want to use this technology in our lives or face having those decisions made for us again.

CAMDEN — MSAD 28 and Five Town CSD are hosting a community presentation by Grace Chen on technology use and children, Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m., at Bisbee Theater, in Camden Rockport Middle School. The presentation is called “Screens and Kids: defining the categories of device usage, understanding the impact on our kids, and ideas for managing your family’s screen time.”

Parents and teachers in our community are seeing negative behaviors and outcomes that they attribute to kids’ screen time. What are the impacts of screen time?  Is all screen time the same? Grace will be providing an insider’s perspective into the different types of device usage, how/why they are built in a certain way, and how that affects today’s youth. While there is no single solution to the challenge, this presentation will cover frameworks for how to manage your family’s decisions for device usage.

Grace Chen has spent the last 20 years in the tech industry in Silicon Valley, building technology products and businesses. She has developed products for consumers, small businesses, and enterprise companies at some of the largest and most successful tech companies, including Google, Meta, and Square. In 2016 she co-founded a start-up that provided an affordable high-speed internet alternative to cable; she sold the company to Meta in 2020. She holds several patents for her technology product development work.

Chen began her career as an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She holds a B.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University.

Chen lives in Camden with her husband and two kids, who both attend Camden-Rockport Elementary School.
