“If the photographs in this picture aren’t enough to convince you, the countryside really is a beautiful place to grow up. When you’re a child, you definitely don’t feel sufficiently grateful for the beauty all around you, but now, I appreciate it all the more. East Anglia is full of tiny, picturesque villages, and even the cities are lovely. Norwich will always be one of my favourite places for a day out. The lack of light pollution at night time is another wonderful aspect of countryside living. Being able to gaze up at the beautiful stars on a clear evening is a magical experience, something I definitely wouldn’t trade.”

Ellis explores aspects of rural living based on her own childhood in Suffolk, England. She remembers the inconveniences she experienced and, in contrast, recalls the peace and beauty she observed in the countryside and the lessons she learned there. She ultimately concludes that after having lived in both the country and the city, she would not trade the life of her childhood; however, she would also be comfortable in a small village with some semblance of urban living.

“Life brings simple pleasures. Simple pleasures are the most satisfying that life has to offer. The morning coffee, being outside under a warm blue sky, hanging out with loved ones after dinner, a beautiful view, having a good laugh, sleeping in on a rainy day. There are lots of things to be satisfied about. The province life is living a simple but carefree life.”

This reflection is author Carol Padua Montero’s retelling of the time that she and her partner Neil visited her childhood home in Aurora province in the Philippines. She recalls their activities, their food, and the simple joys of being with family and nature. She emphasizes the easygoing manner of provincial Filipinos: despite not having as much, they live a happy life. 

“On our 300-cow dairy, we are in full swing chopping and baling hay, which means long days full of fieldwork and scrambling to fit chores and milking in between sun-up and sun-down. One of the best parts? Watching my nieces and nephews soak in all the craziness in the most innocent of ways. Their disbelief at how tall the corn is, how massive the pile of silage gets, or how much a calf’s tongue tickles as it licks them reminds me just how amazing our job is.”

Molly Schmitt describes her life as a farmer and as a “farm kid” in the countryside, where she has spent her whole life. She details her daily routine with her family and her children, but the most dominant part of her essay is about her own childhood. She recalls ten childhood memories that she cherishes dearly, involving family, food, and, of course, the farm. 

“There is a beautiful sandy beach on your doorstep, replete with endless rockpools. And all you have to do is to fling open the front door and walk for five minutes, and you’re on top of a cliff, with 180-degree views of the sea, salt wind in your face.”

Ley’s reflection on country life is quite introspective, as she remembers her life by the sea as a child, particularly the house she was raised in. She remembers how she felt in the serene, idyllic setting, exploring both the highs and lows of living there. But she comes to feel conflicted over the house as her mother considers selling it. She ultimately resigns to the idea of having to let go of that house after so many years, teaching us all a lesson about moving on.

Your personal experience may provide the best inspiration. Reflect on your experiences of the countryside, and think about how it makes you feel— happy, sad, scared, or lonely? Do not let others’ experiences influence you; focus on yourself. And if necessary, take a trip to the countryside and get some fresh perspective.

It is unconditionally set in our minds that a village or a rural area will have small huts and lots of green lands with different crops growing in them. But, it is much more complex than its simple definition.

Rural life is very diverse and is almost like a community which consists of people living together with similar interests, dialect, occupation (to a certain extent) and similar living standards.

What exactly is the meaning of a Rural Area?

As far as the Indian rural areas are concerned, the lifestyle of the people over here is very much different from that of the people living in the cities.

Some rural areas are present just on the outskirts of the cities but still have a very different lifestyle.

It is like when we step into the rural land the atmosphere in here changes and something like a calm breeze settles over us making us forget about the rush of the city life even if it is for a limited time.

This is what makes living in a rural area different from living in an urban area.

People living in rural areas have their own domestic occupation like agriculture, making pots, animal husbandry i.e. maintain the cattle and poultry houses. They basically have the habit of cultivating their own crops.

Agriculture: The Primary Job of a Farmer

The main objective of this agricultural occupation is to cultivate crops for themselves first and then sell them for profit.  They are basically called a farmer who cultivates the crops and sell them.

In a limited space of land, one cannot cultivate all types of cereals and legumes and vegetables.

So, it is a general understanding among the people living in that village that each person will cultivate some or the other crop and keep the required amount of the total yield for themselves and sell the remaining part of the harvested food grains or legumes or vegetables to the other people among the community.

This was the primitive principle of how the daily bread was earned. But as a majority of these people from the rural areas started migrating to the urban areas and these people started depending on the farmers in the rural areas or villages to provide them with all the crops and cereals.

As we all know that land availability in rural area is almost double the amount of land available in the urban areas. This allows a lot of agricultural activities to be carried out on this fertile land as it is untouched by the industrial chemicals.

So now the farmer’s official occupation becomes agriculture i.e. now the farmer will not only cultivate crops for his own family but also for most of the families in the urban areas.

This is basically why most of the people living in the rural areas are involved in agricultural activities for most of the year and it has become a full-time job.

Some benefits of living in a village

People living in rural areas have access to a large area of land. It can also be called as a yard or a small garden in which children play.

This allows them to explore their physical abilities along with their mental ability of problem solving and being calm in dicey situations.

The actual meaning of outdoor games is understood well by the children in this rural area because they live it every day.

Equal importance or more importance is given to physical fitness as it is a very essential requirement for their family occupation that means if they are going to work in the field.

They might live in small houses, but they are always together which means that not a single family is left alone for living. There is a lot of unity as well as understanding among the people living as a community.

All of them talk to each other i.e. they basically live together and share their experiences, thoughts and also discuss if there are some social changes to be made.

Therefore, the political system of the rural area is also different consisting of the Gram Panchayat . The sarpanch is the village head who looks after the well-being of all the villagers.

If there is any problem, the people will tell the sarpanch and then the sarpanch will take further actions to bring a change by himself or by approaching the higher government body.

Are there any disadvantages of living in a village?

It cannot be said that living in a village consists of disadvantages, but it certainly has some drawbacks. The major drawback or limitation of the village lifestyle is that the mindset of the villagers does not change so much of globalization going on in the cities.

That is the main reason why whenever we step into a village land we immediately recognize the cultural difference, difference in the mindset and thinking, certain superstitions and other beliefs.

In the Indian Rural areas, it must be well experienced by some people that even if we have our own relatives living in that village, there are some restrictions put on the small children, the female members of our family, etc.

This is majorly because villagers think that people living in the urban areas are not fit enough to adapt to the rough life of the village.

They have strict and unbendable beliefs, for example, they think that the female members should only stick to working in the house and take of children and not go to offices.

This thinking has changed for the city people a long time ago but some of the villagers still stick to these beliefs.

There are also lesser or limited number of job opportunities in the villages as compared to the urban areas. This is the main reason why the younger generation is more attracted towards the urban areas.

There are also a variety of jobs other than the agricultural jobs of the villages for example, banking sector, jobs in the science and technology sector, etc.

Even though science and technology are developed in the urban sectors of the country, it is still just a new concept in the villages.

Today’s agricultural sector requires a lot of scientific technology for proper growth of crops and to make them adapt to the changing environment.

But still it will take a little more time for the farmers in the villages to accept that the development in today’s standard of living is equally important to preserving our values and culture.

The rural area is considered to be the backbone of our nation and hence, there should be proper measures taken to improve or speed up the development of the rural area and at the same time not forcing the villagers to adapt to this developing and changing circumstances.

We nowadays see that a lot of schemes are started by the Government to promote the growth and development of the rural areas and also to provide a lot more employment facilities than the urban areas.

A descriptive essay gives a vivid, detailed description of something—generally a place or object, but possibly something more abstract like an emotion. This type of essay , like the narrative essay , is more creative than most academic writing .

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

• Describe a place you love to spend time in.
• Describe an object that has sentimental value for you.

You might also be asked to describe something outside your own experience, in which case you’ll have to use your imagination.

• Describe the experience of a soldier in the trenches of World War I.
• Describe what it might be like to live on another planet.

Sometimes you’ll be asked to describe something more abstract, like an emotion.

If you’re not given a specific prompt, try to think of something you feel confident describing in detail. Think of objects and places you know well, that provoke specific feelings or sensations, and that you can describe in an interesting way.

The key to writing an effective descriptive essay is to find ways of bringing your subject to life for the reader. You’re not limited to providing a literal description as you would be in more formal essay types.

Make use of figurative language, sensory details, and strong word choices to create a memorable description.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

• My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
• My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

• My feline perambulates the allotment proficiently and capers atop the palisade to regard it from aloft.

An example of a short descriptive essay, written in response to the prompt “Describe a place you love to spend time in,” is shown below.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

Village life is always easy and simple. There are lots of people in the world who love to stay away from all the noise of cities. A village is a perfect place for them to live. It is possible to live there peacefully with harmony. 

Today I will share my view of village life as a villager. I have been living in a village for 5 years and I know the difference between city and village life. Lots of people ignore villages as their primary residence because they lack lots of facilities. But is it true? I don’t think so, let’s learn more from this essay. 

My Village:

I am a villager and my village’s name is Mohonpur. It is located in Bihar. It’s a big village with around 4000 people. It’s my native village and all of my ancestors are from this place. We moved to Mumbai a long time back, but we returned here a few years ago. 

We have all the relatives and family friends here. We are having an amazing life. There is a beautiful river beside my village. It’s really fascinating for me. I love to swim there. Our village has two schools and a college for education . 

People are very aware of education. They send their kids to school and colleges. We don’t need to go far for better education. Even lots of students come here from different nearby villages. We have a big village market too. 

People come here to buy and sell their products. Overall life is pretty amazing here. We have better roads and transportation services for moving one place to another. We don’t have traffic jams, electricity problems, or environmental issues. The air is very fresh here. 

Advantages of Village Life: 

There are lots of advantages of village life. The village people are very friendly. It’s easy to make a friend. They will find time for you. They love to chat and hangout. When you greet people in a good way, they will respect you a lot. 

Life is very simple and peaceful there. You can live without any hassle or problems. The food is amazing there. You will find every type of fruit, vegetables, fishes, or meat and they are fresh. I love to eat village vegetables. When I stay there, I go to a different village garden to buy vegetables. 

It’s so relaxing. The fishermen are catching fish from the river and you can get completely fresh fish from them. The environment is great. You can take a long and deep breath on pollution-free air. Overall there are tons of advantages of village life and I can’t complete writing here. 

Disadvantages of Village Life:

Along with lots of advantages, there are some disadvantages too. Some villages are very unprivileged. They don’t have electricity, gas, or a proper education system. I can tell you about some neighboring villages. 

They don’t have electricity and that has made their life very hard. It’s a fault of the system and government. We need to make our village able to live for everyone. The migration problem is getting huge in our country for fewer facilities in villages. 

People have a high intention to move to the cities. But we can make our villages amazing. The village has less opportunity for making a job or working space. If you want to get a better job, then you need to go to the city for sure.

That’s all about village life. Village life is perfect for lots of people. You can match there too if you want to lead a simple and easy life. The government should invest in villages to make jobs there. It could change the entire country.

It is rightly said that God made the country and man made the town.

In the villages, the people live in an open atmosphere. They get fresh air and sunlight. They inhale pure oxygen which they get form the trees and waving crops which grow in their fields.

As compared to the towns’ people , the people in the villages lead a tension free life. There is not much  noise in villages.

In  villages, people generally get fresh vegetables and pure milk. They also consume lesser amount of fast food which is very harmful.

There are , however  certain advantages which the urban people have over the villages.

There are much better employment avenues in towns. The security system is also better in towns.

In towns, the people often  do not feel bored, as they have several means of amusement and entertainment such as visiting different places of importance, a visit to the zoo, some museum of exhibition, etc.

In towns, people get better education as there are so many schools, colleges, universities and libraries.

Better medical facilities are available in towns, as there are so many big hospital and dispensaries there which are not available in villages.

In towns we can have more variety of goods including food and wearing articles. We can get the food of our choice at hotels and restaurants. There are thousands of shops in towns to cater to our needs.,

Thus , in certain ways, villages are better while in other , towns are better

What to know about the crisis of violence, politics and hunger engulfing Haiti

A long-simmering crisis over Haiti’s ability to govern itself, particularly after a series of natural disasters and an increasingly dire humanitarian emergency, has come to a head in the Caribbean nation, as its de facto president remains stranded in Puerto Rico and its people starve and live in fear of rampant violence. 

The chaos engulfing the country has been bubbling for more than a year, only for it to spill over on the global stage on Monday night, as Haiti’s unpopular prime minister, Ariel Henry, agreed to resign once a transitional government is brokered by other Caribbean nations and parties, including the U.S.

But the very idea of a transitional government brokered not by Haitians but by outsiders is one of the main reasons Haiti, a nation of 11 million, is on the brink, according to humanitarian workers and residents who have called for Haitian-led solutions. 

“What we’re seeing in Haiti has been building since the 2010 earthquake,” said Greg Beckett, an associate professor of anthropology at Western University in Canada. 

What is happening in Haiti and why?

In the power vacuum that followed the assassination of democratically elected President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Henry, who was prime minister under Moïse, assumed power, with the support of several nations, including the U.S. 

When Haiti failed to hold elections multiple times — Henry said it was due to logistical problems or violence — protests rang out against him. By the time Henry announced last year that elections would be postponed again, to 2025, armed groups that were already active in Port-au-Prince, the capital, dialed up the violence.

Even before Moïse’s assassination, these militias and armed groups existed alongside politicians who used them to do their bidding, including everything from intimidating the opposition to collecting votes . With the dwindling of the country’s elected officials, though, many of these rebel forces have engaged in excessively violent acts, and have taken control of at least 80% of the capital, according to a United Nations estimate. 

Those groups, which include paramilitary and former police officers who pose as community leaders, have been responsible for the increase in killings, kidnappings and rapes since Moïse’s death, according to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program at Uppsala University in Sweden. According to a report from the U.N . released in January, more than 8,400 people were killed, injured or kidnapped in 2023, an increase of 122% increase from 2022.

“January and February have been the most violent months in the recent crisis, with thousands of people killed, or injured, or raped,” Beckett said.

Armed groups who had been calling for Henry’s resignation have already attacked airports, police stations, sea ports, the Central Bank and the country’s national soccer stadium. The situation reached critical mass earlier this month when the country’s two main prisons were raided , leading to the escape of about 4,000 prisoners. The beleaguered government called a 72-hour state of emergency, including a night-time curfew — but its authority had evaporated by then.

Aside from human-made catastrophes, Haiti still has not fully recovered from the devastating earthquake in 2010 that killed about 220,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless, many of them living in poorly built and exposed housing. More earthquakes, hurricanes and floods have followed, exacerbating efforts to rebuild infrastructure and a sense of national unity.

Since the earthquake, “there have been groups in Haiti trying to control that reconstruction process and the funding, the billions of dollars coming into the country to rebuild it,” said Beckett, who specializes in the Caribbean, particularly Haiti. 

Beckett said that control initially came from politicians and subsequently from armed groups supported by those politicians. Political “parties that controlled the government used the government for corruption to steal that money. We’re seeing the fallout from that.”

Many armed groups have formed in recent years claiming to be community groups carrying out essential work in underprivileged neighborhoods, but they have instead been accused of violence, even murder . One of the two main groups, G-9, is led by a former elite police officer, Jimmy Chérizier — also known as “Barbecue” — who has become the public face of the unrest and claimed credit for various attacks on public institutions. He has openly called for Henry to step down and called his campaign an “armed revolution.”

But caught in the crossfire are the residents of Haiti. In just one week, 15,000 people have been displaced from Port-au-Prince, according to a U.N. estimate. But people have been trying to flee the capital for well over a year, with one woman telling NBC News that she is currently hiding in a church with her three children and another family with eight children. The U.N. said about 160,000 people have left Port-au-Prince because of the swell of violence in the last several months. 

Deep poverty and famine are also a serious danger. Gangs have cut off access to the country’s largest port, Autorité Portuaire Nationale, and food could soon become scarce.

Haiti's uncertain future

A new transitional government may dismay the Haitians and their supporters who call for Haitian-led solutions to the crisis. 

But the creation of such a government would come after years of democratic disruption and the crumbling of Haiti’s political leadership. The country hasn’t held an election in eight years. 

Haitian advocates and scholars like Jemima Pierre, a professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, say foreign intervention, including from the U.S., is partially to blame for Haiti’s turmoil. The U.S. has routinely sent thousands of troops to Haiti , intervened in its government and supported unpopular leaders like Henry.

“What you have over the last 20 years is the consistent dismantling of the Haitian state,” Pierre said. “What intervention means for Haiti, what it has always meant, is death and destruction.”

In fact, the country’s situation was so dire that Henry was forced to travel abroad in the hope of securing a U.N. peacekeeping deal. He went to Kenya, which agreed to send 1,000 troops to coordinate an East African and U.N.-backed alliance to help restore order in Haiti, but the plan is now on hold . Kenya agreed last October to send a U.N.-sanctioned security force to Haiti, but Kenya’s courts decided it was unconstitutional. The result has been Haiti fending for itself. 

“A force like Kenya, they don’t speak Kreyòl, they don’t speak French,” Pierre said. “The Kenyan police are known for human rights abuses . So what does it tell us as Haitians that the only thing that you see that we deserve are not schools, not reparations for the cholera the U.N. brought , but more military with the mandate to use all kinds of force on our population? That is unacceptable.”  

Henry was forced to announce his planned resignation from Puerto Rico, as threats of violence — and armed groups taking over the airports — have prevented him from returning to his country.  

Now that Henry is to stand down, it is far from clear what the armed groups will do or demand next, aside from the right to govern. 

“It’s the Haitian people who know what they’re going through. It’s the Haitian people who are going to take destiny into their own hands. Haitian people will choose who will govern them,” Chérizier said recently, according to The Associated Press .

Haitians and their supporters have put forth their own solutions over the years, holding that foreign intervention routinely ignores the voices and desires of Haitians. 

In 2021, both Haitian and non-Haitian church leaders, women’s rights groups, lawyers, humanitarian workers, the Voodoo Sector and more created the Commission to Search for a Haitian Solution to the Crisis . The commission has proposed the “ Montana Accord ,” outlining a two-year interim government with oversight committees tasked with restoring order, eradicating corruption and establishing fair elections.
