Rounding to the nearest 10 Worksheets

When you are rounding a number to the nearest 10, you are trying to find out which multiple of 10 your number is closest to.

The golden rule with rounding is that if a number is exactly halfway between two multiples of 10, you always round up.

How to round a number to the nearest 10

Look at the ones digit.

  • if it is less than 5 then round the number down by changing the ones digit to zero;
  • if it is 5 or more then round the number up by adding one on to the tens digit and changing the ones digit to zero.
  • 37 rounds up to 40 because the ones digit is 7.
  • 63 rounds down to 60 because the ones digit is 3.
  • 145 rounds up to 150 because the ones digit is a 5.

Here you will find a range of free printable math worksheets to help your child learn to round numbers to the nearest 10.

These sheets are carefully graded so that the easier sheets come first and give extra support.

The numbers in Sheets 1 to 4 go up to 100. Sheets 5 & 6 go up to 1000.

Each sheets comes with a separate printable answer sheet.

Rounding Word Problems Worksheets

In these free math worksheets, students practice how to use rounding to estimate and check the answers to word problems.

How to use estimation or rounding? Estimation or rounding is a useful tool for checking answers because it allows you to quickly determine if an answer is reasonable or not.

Here are some steps you can follow to use estimation to check an answer: Step 1: Make sure you understand what you are being asked to find and what information you have been given. Step 2: Round any numbers given in the problem to the nearest whole number, or to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand, depending on the level of accuracy needed. Step 3: Use mental math to perform calculations quickly. For example, if you need to add 23 and 45, round them both to 20 and 50 and add those instead. This will give you an estimate that is close to the actual answer. Step 4: Once you have an estimate, compare it to the actual answer you calculated. If the estimate is close to the actual answer, you can be confident that your calculation is correct. If the estimate is significantly different from the actual answer, you may need to review your work and make corrections.

By using estimation to check your answers, you can catch errors early and avoid making mistakes that could lead to incorrect results.

Reasoned Rounding printable sheet

This is a rounding game for two players.

11 circles, each split in half, with labels from 0 to 100 counting up in 10s

You will need a  recording sheet  shared between the two players. One sheet is enough for three games. The first player rolls a 0-9 dice twice and chooses which two-digit number they would like to make from the numbers rolled. They then round this number to the nearest 10, find the matching circle on the recording sheet and write their two digit number in one of the spaces in that circle. The second player rolls the dice twice to take their turn in a similar way. A circle is complete when it has two numbers in it and this scores a point for the person who wrote the second number in. (Even if the first number was written in by the other player.) The game is over when all the circles are full and then the points are counted up to find the winner.

Another way to develop a student's understanding of quantity is to teach him to round numbers. Rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundreds place is a foundational skill that will enable a student to estimate solutions to numerical operations (for example, 52 + 46 is close to 50 + 50, so the answer will be close to 100). This page includes intervention strategies that you can use to support your students in this area. As you read, consider which of these interventions best aligns with your student's strengths and needs in the whole-learner domains.

Explicit Instruction

If you are intervening to reinforce your student's ability to round numbers, you should start by explicitly teaching the skill. This sounds like:

  • Explain the Skill/Concept.  Define rounding, and explain activity. ( "Rounding numbers means that we figure out an easier number to work with that has a similar value to the number we start with. If working with two-digit numbers, we might round to the nearest ten. If working with three-digit numbers, we might round to the nearest 100." "Today, we are going to learn strategies for rounding to the nearest ten." )
  • Model Skill with Examples.  Think aloud about how to round a number.  ( "If I have a number, such as 36, I have to ask myself: Is 36 closer to or just about the same as 30 or 40. I can look at 36 on a number line to figure this out. When I look at 36 on a number line, I can see that it's closer to 40 than to 30, so I should round up to 40 because 36 is just about the same as 40." )
  • Model Skill with Non-Examples.  Think aloud about how to round a number incorrectly. ( "What if I rounded 36 down to 30? This number is actually further from 36 than 40 is , s o rounding down gives me a less accurate estimation than rounding up to 40. Rounding to the closest ten will be especially important as we complete operations with these numbers." )
  • Practice the Skill.  Engage in one or more of the activities below to practice the skill with your student, providing feedback as necessary. ( "Now you try. I'm going to show you..." )

Note:   The number 35 is halfway between 30 and 40, so the above strategy of seeing which decade number the number is closest to won't work. In this case, you need to teach the exception to the rule. Anytime you see a 5 in the place to the right of the digit you're rounding to, you round up.

Activity A: Rounding with Number Lines or Hundreds Charts If your student is able to count with a number line or hundreds chart but struggles to round numbers to the nearest 10, teach him Rounding with Number Lines or Hundreds Charts (Petti, 2017). In this strategy, a teacher uses a number line or a hundreds chart to help a student conceptualize if the nearest ten is bigger or smaller than the number being rounded (for example, is 36 closer to 30 or 40?). To do this, the teacher gives the student a number, such as 36, and has him quantify the distance between 30 and 36 (6 spaces on the number line). Then, she has him quantify the distance between 36 and 40 (4 spaces on the number line). Then, the student has to decide which one is closer (40), which will be the decade number that the number should be rounded to. Note: This intervention can also be used to teach rounding to the nearest hundred, as long as students are able to skip count by 10s.

Rounding with Number Lines or Hundreds Charts in Action  Note: For purposes of clarity, the example below focuses on using a number line to teach this intervention.

Teacher: We are going to practice rounding a number to the nearest ten. I'll give you a number, and then you'll figure out whether it should be rounded to the ten below it or above it by figuring out which is closer. You'll figure it out by counting the spots from your number to the others. Your number is 36. First, how far is 36 from 30?

Student: [Starting at the number 30 and pointing to each tally on the number line up to 36.] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... It's 6.

Teacher: Now count from 36 up to 40.

Student: 1, 2, 3, 4... It's 4 units away. So 36 is closer to 40 than 30! We'd round 36 up to 40!

Activity B: Rounding with Base Ten Blocks If your student has learned how to use base ten blocks but struggles to round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, use these tools to teach rounding (Petti, 2017). In this intervention, a teacher gives a student a number (such as 36) and also a group of base ten blocks that represent that number. Then, she has the student line up the blocks and count how many blocks 36 is from 30 (6) or 40 (4) and decide which one is closer. This intervention can also be used to show that 5 is the cutoff point. In other words, if a student has a number that ends with 35, it is equally close to 30 or 40. However, if the number ends with a number less than 5, it is closer to the lower number (so the student should round down), and if it ends with a number greater than 5, it is closer to the upper number (so he should round up).

Rounding with Base Ten Blocks in Action Teacher: I'd like you to round 36 to the nearest ten. To do this, line up your base ten blocks, and see if 36 is closer to 30 or 40.  Student (after lining up blocks): Well, I can count the spaces between 36 and 30, and I'd need to take away 6 blocks. But if I count the spaces between 36 and 40, I'd only need to add 4 blocks. So, that must mean that 36 is closer to 40. That means I would round up.

Activity C: Teach and Practice the Rules Once a student has developed a conceptual understanding of what rounding means and is able to round to the nearest 10, you can teach him to round numbers to the nearest 100 or 1000. When she is rounding to the nearest 100, teach the student to look at the tens place to figure out which hundred the number is closer to (for example, in 126, there is a 2 in the tens place, so 126 is closer to 100 than 200). When she is learning how to round to the nearest 1000, teach the student to look at the hundreds place to round up or down (for example, in 1720. there is a 7 in the hundreds place, so 1720 is closer to 2000 than 1000. The student would round up to 2000). As the student builds fluency with this concept, teach her the rules below.

The rules are as follows:

  • If the number you are rounding ends with 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up!
  • If the number you are rounding ends with 1, 2, 3, or 4, round down!

Teach and Practice the Rules in Action Teacher: Now that we have learned to round to the nearest 10, we are going to practice rounding to the nearest 100. The rules are the same, but there is one big difference: when we round to the nearest 100, we look at the tens place, not the ones place, to figure out which 100 the number is closest to. What place do we look at?

Student: The tens place.

Teacher: Great! In the number 126, which is the tens place?

Student: The second number, 2, is in the tens place.

Teacher: So, should we round 126 to 100 or 200?

Student: 100.

Teacher: Why?

Student: Because 20 is closer to 0 than to the next 100.

Teacher: I wonder if that's a rule — "If there's a two in the place you're rounding, you'll always round down." Let's test that rule!

Baker, K. (2019, February 16).  How to Teach Rounding So Students Actually Understand . Teaching Made Practical. https://teachingmadepractical.com/teaching-rounding-so-students-understand/

Activity D: Estimating when Performing Operations  Once a student has mastered rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand, he can estimate numbers to get an approximate answer when performing operations (Petti, 2017). This will help a student get a general sense of the answer before he completes the problem using the exact numbers. In order to estimate when adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing, the teacher teaches the student to round all the numbers in the problem and then solve it. The place that the student will round to depends on the number of digits the numbers contain. Here are some guidelines:

  • Addition example: 42 + 64 = 40 + 60
  • Subtraction example: 58-12 = 60-10
  • Multiplication example: 62 x 13 = 60 x 10
  • Division example: 24/13 = 20/10
  • Addition example: 426 + 643 = 400 + 600
  • Subtraction example: 585-122 = 600-100
  • Multiplication example: 626 x 132 = 600 x 100
  • Division example: 246/134 = 200/100
  • Addition example: 4264 + 6433 = 4000 + 6000
  • Subtraction example: 5854-1223 = 6000-1000
  • Multiplication example: 6264 x 1322 = 6000 x 1000
  • Division example: 2465/1341 = 2000/1000

Estimating when Performing Operations in Action Teacher: Now that we have learned to round numbers, we are going to practice this strategy to get an estimate of an answer when solving a problem. Right now, we'll practice rounding with addition problems. If my problem was 42 + 64, I would round to the nearest ten to estimate my answer. By rounding before I solve the problem, I have an idea of what my actual answer will be close to. This will help me check that my answer is correct.

Teacher: So, I'll round 42 to 40 and 64 to 60, which makes the new problem: 40 + 60. Because I've rounded, I can quickly solve this problem in my head: 40 + 60 is 100. This means that my actual answer will be close to 100!

Teacher: Let me check. 42 + 64 = 106. Is that close to 100? Yes!

Teacher: Now, you'll try rounding numbers to solve addition problems.

Activity E: Rounding Decimals Once a student has been introduced to decimals, he can learn similar rules for rounding decimals. In order to carry out this process, he must demonstrate a strong understanding of place value, as well as the ability to round numbers to ten, hundred, and thousand. In this strategy, a student focuses on rounding the numbers after the decimal place. However, instead of rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand, the student rounds to the nearest ten th , hundred th , or thousand th , which is how place value is described for numbers behind the decimal point. When learning to round to the nearest tenth, the teacher teaches the student to look at the hundredths place to figure out whether to round up or down (for example, in 0.16, there is a 6 in the hundredths place, so the student would round to up to 0.2). When learning how to round to the nearest hundredth, the teacher teaches the student to look at the thousandths place (the number to the right of the hundredths place) to round up or down (for example, in 0.727 there is a 7 in the thousandths place, so the student would round up to 0.73). When rounding decimals, the same rules apply:

Rounding Decimals in Action Teacher: Now that we have learned about decimals, we are going to practice rounding decimals so that we can estimate the solutions to problems that include decimals. The rules are the same, but there is one big difference: when we round numbers located behind the decimal points, we look at the tenths, hundredths, or thousandths place, not the tens, hundreds, or thousands place. What place do we look at?

Student: The tenths, hundredths, or thousandths place.

Teacher: We know that the tenths place is the first number after the decimal, the hundreds is the second number behind the decimal, and the thousandths number is the third place behind the decimal. If I asked you to round 0.25 to the nearest tenth, you would look at the number in the 100s place and decide whether to round up to the bigger tenth or down to the smaller tenth. What digit is in the hundredth place?

Student: 5. So I should round up to .3.

Teacher: Why?

Student: Because .25 is exactly between .2 and .3— if it's exactly in the middle, you always round up.

Think about the following scenario, which takes place after a teacher has explicitly taught a student strategies for rounding numbers.        Teacher: " Can you round 36 to the nearest ten? "        Student: " 36. Let's see. It's closer to 30 because it has a 3 in the front. "

In such a case, what might you do?

When you are planning your lessons, you should anticipate that your student will make errors throughout. Here are a series of prompts that you can use to respond to errors. Keep in mind that all students are different, and that some students might respond better to some types of feedback than to others.

If your student struggles to meet your objective, there are various techniques that you might try in order to adjust the activity so as best to meet your student's needs.

Round to the Nearest Ten Calculator

Meaning of rounding to ten, round to the nearest ten calculator, rounding ride at omni.

At some point in our lives, we need to round off numbers, which is why we created a "round to the nearest ten calculator". It is a one-stop solution to rounding numbers to their nearest tens . But if you need to know,

  • The meaning of rounding to ten; or
  • How to round to the nearest ten;

we still have you covered.

Consider the number 32 . According to the place value system , it is made of two numbers, 30 at the ten's position and 2 at the one's . The next ten is 40. But now observe, which one is closer to 32? Is it 30 or 40? Yes, you are right, it is 30.

This is the science behind rounding to the nearest ten. The rounding rules apply as usual. But here, you round the ten using the number at one's position. It means that if the number at one's is greater than 4, then we round up. Otherwise, we round down.

Let's consider an example. Suppose you want to round 47 47 47 to the nearest ten. Note the number at one's, 7 , is greater than four. Hence, we round up, and the number 47 now becomes 50 50 50 .

Suppose another number, 573 573 573 . Here the number at one's position is 3 , which obviously is less than four. Hence we round down, and the number 573 now becomes 570 570 570 . Notice how we didn't use or change the number at the hundred's position; that would only happen if we were rounding to the nearest hundred.

Our round to the nearest ten calculator is unique but easy to use . To round to ten, all you have to do is enter your desired number. And that is all. The rest will be handled efficiently by the tool. The rounded to ten number is displayed in the result.

For instance, you input 7689 7689 7689 ; the tool displays the result as 7690 7690 7690 . Since the 9, at one's, is greater than 4, the 89 is rounded up to 90. And the number becomes 7690.

And that is how to round to the nearest ten.

We made sure to create enough rounding tools for you to keep coming back for all your number rounding needs. Here is a list of Omni's rounding calculators:

  • Rounding calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest thousand calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest thousandth calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest hundred calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest hundredth calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest tenth calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest integer calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest dollar calculator ;
  • Round to the nearest cent calculator ; and
  • Round to the nearest penny calculator .

What is 22 rounded to the nearest ten?

22 rounded to its nearest ten is 20 .

Since 20 is closer than 30 to 22, the number is rounded down. But the principle here is to check the number at one's position. If it is greater than 4, the number is rounded up, else rounded down.

How do I convert a number to the nearest ten?

To round a number to the nearest ten, follow the steps:

  • Note down the number to be rounded;
  • Identify the number at the one's position
  • If the one's number is larger than 4 , round up the number at the ten . Otherwise, round it down.

Is a number at ten the same as tenth?

No, the number at ten is different than the number at tenth .

In the place value system, the number at ten is the one left to the number at one's. The tenth number exists only in decimals and is right after the decimal point.

In 85.2 , 80 is ten, 5 is one, and 2 is the tenth.

10 Exciting & Effective Rounding Games

  • Engagement , Math , Planning

This post contains affiliate links, meaning that at no additional cost to you, I will make a commission if you click through and make a purchase. You can read more about this on my disclosure page .

When you think “rounding,” your first thought probably isn’t about how exciting rounding games can be. In fact, I’m willing to bet you imagine something similar to rounding hills, like the ones I explore in my “ Remarkable Rounding ” post! However, rounding isn’t always as engaging as we’d like it to be, even if we use rounding roller coasters.

Regardless, rounding is so important in mathematics, especially in upper elementary classrooms. It’s the basis for understanding place value, how numbers work together, and so much more. In addition, having strong foundational skills in rounding helps students develop better number sense , which we all know is one of the most important ways we can help students succeed in math!

Unfortunately, I’ve heard the same thing time and time again from a variety of teachers: rounding can be a bit dull . That’s why I’ve come up with a list of ten ( ten! ) exciting and engaging rounding games and activities that can effectively up your rounding game in the upper elementary math classroom. Let’s take a look at my favorites!

Get ahead of the curve by teaching rounding skills and sparking interest through interactive rounding games, manipulatives, songs, and movement.

1. Rounding Card Game

Assigning symbols to help students learn rounding brings an abstract concept down to a more tangible level. One way to implement this concept is with a fan-favorite rounding game: A Garden of Rounding !

In this game, an adorable variety of vegetables are used to symbolize the rounding number. From small decimal squashes to large tomato millions, students can grow their own “gardens” while simultaneously growing their knowledge!

In addition, this game includes rounding to the nearest ten and hundred as well as rounding to thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions, and even decimals. Overall, rounding card games are an engaging way to teach rounding!

2. Rounding Riddles

Riddle me this: what’s another exciting, engaging rounding activity that will keep your students entertained through your math block? Rounding riddles!

Getting your kiddos laughing is always a reliable way of engaging learners. Teaching your students that math doesn’t have to be strictly boring textbooks is key to creating lifelong mathematicians! With a bit of humor, even rounding can be a thrilling ride.

I like to use Boom Cards to incorporate riddles into math subjects. To play, students solve the problem posed on the slide, such as rounding a given number to the nearest hundredth. They find their answer in the squares below; if they are correct, they’re moved to the next problem. This continues until they have found the answers on all the squares, at which point a fun riddle is revealed!

If you’re interested, you can check out my rounding decimals Boom Cards in my TPT store by clicking the link or the image below.

3. Color by Number Rounding

Coloring isn’t only for preschool and lower elementary classrooms. Plenty of upper elementary students (and even adults) enjoy it, too! Coloring is a wonderful way to wind students down while still maintaining engagement.

With those benefits in mind, I set to work to create a whole slew of color-by-number activities for a wide variety of math concepts, including rounding! In this rounding activity, students solve problems to reveal the appropriate color for each section of the picture. Once they complete the set of problems, they’ll have a lovely, colorful scene!

All you need for this activity are the sheets (which you can find here on my TPT store!) as well as colored pencils or crayons . Keep in mind, however, that these color-by-number math puzzles are tons of fun… Your students will be asking for all the rounding games they can get their hands on, from decimals to whole numbers and more!

4. Rounding Task Cards

I absolutely adore task cards, no matter the concept. In fact, I even took the time to write up a blog post about the many ways you can use task cards in your classroom! Task cards are extremely versatile and engaging, and they fit with just about any math or science subject you can think of. I use task cards for a wide array of concepts, and rounding is no exception.

My favorite rounding game with task cards is my “ Superhero Rounding ” game. This activity covers rounding to the tens and hundreds and serves as an excellent way to introduce rounding or even to reinforce the concept. In this activity, students receive their cards in small groups, stations, math centers, or independent work, and then round the number on the card. It’s a fun, effective way to practice rounding!

5.  Rounding Bingo

Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned game of bingo? Rounding bingo works just like the classic game, but with a mathematical twist! First, you’ll use bingo cards with an array of numbers rounded to the nearest whole number (or decimal place). Then, call out numbers that need to be rounded. The first student to mark off five numbers in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line wins! This rounding game helps your kiddos fall into the rhythm of rounding numbers while keeping them engaged and entertained. If you want to make it even more engaging, try using the human DIY bingo version .

6. Rounding Mystery Puzzles

Another way to use rounding games to effectively reinforce your rounding lesson is with self-checking puzzles. Specifically, rounding mystery puzzles are my favorite! To use mystery puzzles, students first solve math equations (or, in this case, round the given number to its nearest tens or hundreds place) and cut out the mixed-up picture containing the answers in each square. Then, students glue each answer in the correct box, revealing the picture and the answer to the math riddle!

Self-checking activities are a wonderful way for students to receive instant feedback without the embarrassment of a low quiz score. In addition, keeping your classroom occupied and engaged with this rounding game allows you to meet one-on-one with students who need some extra encouragement. Rounding mystery puzzles are a wonderful resource, and so much fun for your learners!

7. Interactive Rounding Apps and Websites

I know, I know: I talk about the benefits of using technology in the classroom all the time. But, hey, I promise that it’s for good reason! Building technology skills while simultaneously enforcing math concepts is a win-win situation, don’t you think?

That being said, in addition to printable rounding games, there are plenty of interactive math apps and websites with a variety of rounding games and activities that are sure to help your students grasp rounding concepts. Let’s look at two of my favorites!

Math Doodles

Math Doodles is a hands-on app that focuses on math concepts. This app helps your students visualize numbers and rounding with the aid of super cool interactive pictures! Math Doodles is perfect for visual learners, of course, but just about any student will find it worthwhile. You can check out their website here !

Rocket Rounding

Rocket Rounding is a web-based rounding game where students round numbers to tens, hundreds and whole numbers. The neat part is that this website comes with baked-in differentiation! Rocket Rounding includes one mode with a number line to assist students in visualizing the rounding, as well as a separate mode with no number line. Students can challenge themselves by taking away the number line when they feel ready!

8. Rounding Song and Dance

Next to rounding games, rounding songs and dances are the next best things! If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you can try your hand at writing your own rounding song; otherwise, check out the Rounding Rap on Flocabulary, one of my favorite websites!

Once students understand the idea of the rounding game, you can even have your kiddos write their own rhymes or songs for rounding decimals and other rounding rules. They can even come up with cool dance moves and perform for the class if they’re feeling brave!

9. Number Line Rounding Hopscotch

If a song-and-dance routine doesn’t have enough engagement for you, then add a little physical movement to your rounding games! A great physical activity for exploring rounding is something I call “number line hopscotch.” This is an excellent choice if you can bring your classroom outside, but it can be done inside, too!

First, use sidewalk chalk or masking tape to make giant number lines on the floor for students to to physically hop to. Call out numbers and ask students to hop to the number that is to the closest decimal, tens, hundreds, and so on! Students are bound to love any rounding games that involve all this hands-on (and feet-on?) moving and leaping about!

10. Round -Up Movement

The final of these rounding games I have for you is somehow even more physically active than the last, and is a great way to encourage exercise in your students… Besides all the mental exercise you put them through, of course!

In this activity, you will call out unrounded numbers and your students will respond with exercise. For instance, if you call out a number like 437 and ask your classroom to round to the nearest tens place, students can use body movements such as jumping or skipping three times to get to the nearest ten!

Getting the body moving staves off boredom and helps students engage and remember their rounding skills. Of course, that’s assuming your students aren’t like me and round all their exercise down to zero! 😉

rounding to nearest 10 problem solving

No matter how you slice it, rounding is a critical skill in upper elementary mathematics, forming the basis for place value, number sense, and more. It’s crucial that we keep our students engaged during these lessons! Rounding games and activities can make your kiddos eager to start every day with rounding! Get ahead of the curve by teaching rounding skills and sparking interest through interactive rounding games, manipulatives, songs, and movement.
