CA & CS Aspiration

Thus, exploring and selecting relevant and meaningful topics for your project right from your first year of higher education is essential. However, the process is easier said than done. Hence, here we have mentioned tips and 7 of the major factors you can consider for making a choice about the research topic for your commerce project.

  • Evaluate Your Interests and Focus Areas

The first and foremost factor to consider is whether the project topic you are considering interests you enough to complete it with thorough research and effort. If you end up selecting a topic which does not align with your interests, then completing a full-term project in it or pursuing the project over a prolonged period of time can be especially challenging.

Hence the first step in selecting your commerce project–identify your major interest areas and research further in those areas to explore and find the right topic for yourself!

  • Evaluate Alignment with Current Trends & Developments in Commerce

In addition to paying close attention to one’s interests, it is also important to evaluate if the topic is in-sync or integrated with the current developments in the discipline. Going for a topic which is especially relevant with respect to current developments in commerce (for instance, the topic of e-commerce is garnering increasing attention each day) can add to the relevance of your project and its applicability.

  • Evaluate the Relevance to Commerce

It is important to understand how your project topic or its findings can contribute to the field of commerce and fill research gaps in the field. The relevance of a project is especially important for your career in the long-run as it can have important implications for the various fields of commerce and make a mark on both the discipline and your career.

  • Choose a Unique & Original Topic

While selecting a commerce project topic, one should refrain from merely replicating existing projects or topics in commerce. While drawing inspiration from existing projects or researches, choosing a topic which has some originality in it is also important to fill existing research gaps. Thus, selecting a topic which is original and unique (with respect to filling some research gap in the field) is quite important.

  • Consider the Feasibility of the Project

The feasibility of the project is quite important if you want to effectively complete it within a stipulated time, which is normally the case for curriculum-mandated projects that students take up. Thus, evaluating if a project or project design you select is practically feasible is also important to consider.

  • Consider the Applications of Topic

While indulging in basic and descriptive research studies and projects are important for the theoretical development of the field and filling research gaps, innovative projects with practical applicability are quite important and can help set your project apart, thus adding a leverage to your  career.

  • Align the Topic with Your Career Interests

Lastly, but certainly not the least, identifying a project topic that is interesting as well as fulfilling your future career interests can be strategically highly useful for profile building and enhancing available career opportunities for yourself. With thorough projects conducted in areas that align with your career goals, you can build a portfolio that shines through and sets you apart from your competitors.

Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing and managing risks to ensure that they are within an acceptable level of probability and impact.

It is an important part of any organization’s strategy and helps to ensure that business objectives are met.

There are several steps involved in risk management, including:

1. Identifying risks : This involves identifying the potential risks that could affect the achievement of business objectives.

2. Assessing risks : This involves assessing the likelihood and potential impact of each identified risk.

3. Managing risks : This involves putting in place plans and measures to mitigate or eliminate the identified risks.

4. Monitoring and reviewing risks : This involves regularly monitoring and reviewing risks to ensure that they remain within an acceptable level.

Risk management is an important process that helps organisations to protect themselves from potential risks. By identifying, assessing and managing risks, organisations can ensure that they can achieve their business objectives.

Portfolio management

Portfolio management is the art and science of making decisions about investment mix and policy, matching investments to objectives, asset allocation for individuals and institutions, and balancing risk against performance.

Portfolio managers are sometimes referred to as money managers, investment counsellors, or asset managers.

Financial management

Financial management is the process of planning, organizing, and controlling the financial resources of an organization. It includes the development and implementation of financial plans and policies, the management of financial risks, and the provision of financial services.

Financial management is essential to the success of any organization, as it ensures that the organization’s financial resources are best used to achieve its objectives.

Good financial management can help an organization to grow and prosper, while poor financial management can lead to financial difficulties and even failure.

Financial management is a complex and critical area of business, and organizations need to have skilled and experienced financial managers to ensure that their financial affairs are well-managed.

Strategic management

Strategic management is the process of making decisions about the direction and scope of an organization and then implementing those decisions to achieve the organization’s goals.

It involves setting objectives, analyzing the current situation, developing and implementing plans, and monitoring progress.

Strategic management is a continuous process that helps an organization adapt to changing circumstances and achieve its long-term goals. It involves making decisions about the direction and scope of the organization and then implementing those decisions to achieve the organization’s goals.

The first step in the process is to set objectives. The organization’s goals should be realistic and achievable, and they should be aligned with the organization’s mission and values.

Next, the current situation must be analyzed. This includes understanding the organization’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and threats that it faces.

Once the current situation has been analyzed, plans can be developed to achieve the organization’s objectives. These plans should be designed to take advantage of the organization’s strengths and opportunities while mitigating its weaknesses and threats.

Finally, the progress of the organization towards its objectives should be monitored. This includes setting up systems to track progress and making adjustments to the plans as necessary.

Corporate accounts and cost accounts

Corporate accounts and cost accounts are two types of financial accounting that are used to track the financial performance of a business.

Corporate accounts are used to track the overall financial performance of a company, while cost accounts are used to track the financial performance of specific aspects of a company’s operations.

Both types of accounting are important in providing insights into a company’s financial health and performance.

Industrial laws

There are a variety of industrial laws that govern the workplace. These laws are designed to protect the safety and well-being of employees, and to ensure that businesses operate fairly and within the bounds of the law.

Industrial laws cover a wide range of topics, including occupational health and safety, equal employment opportunity, workers’ compensation, and industrial relations.

Occupational health and safety laws are designed to protect workers from risks that may arise in the course of their work. These laws cover a wide range of topics, including workplace safety, hazardous materials, and ergonomics.

Equal employment opportunity laws prohibit discrimination in the workplace based on race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristic. Workers’ compensation laws provide benefits to workers who are injured or who contract an illness as a result of their work.

Industrial relations laws govern the relationship between employers and employees and set out the rights and responsibilities of each party.

Special parliamentary acts formed companies

In India, a company is an association or collection of individuals, whether natural or legal, who come together for a common purpose. Companies are formed under special Indian parliamentary acts and are regulated by the Companies Act of 2013.

There are two types of companies in India: private and public. A private company has a minimum of two members and a maximum of fifty, while a public company has a minimum of seven members.

There are many benefits to forming a company, including the limited liability of shareholders, the ability to raise capital, and the continuity of the business. Additionally, companies are taxed at a lower rate than individuals.

Marketing management

Marketing management is the process of planning, executing, and controlling marketing activities to reach desired goals. It includes the coordination of four elements called the 4Ps of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion.

Marketing management is a process that starts with the identification of customer needs and ends with the satisfaction of those needs. In between, several steps must be taken to ensure that the needs of the customer are met effectively and efficiently.

The first step is to develop a marketing plan. This plan will identify the target market, the objectives to be achieved, the strategies to be used, and the resources that will be required.

Once the plan is in place, it is important to implement it in a way that ensures that all of the activities are carried out as intended.

Once the implementation phase is complete, it is important to monitor the results of the marketing activities and make adjustments where necessary. This feedback loop is essential to ensure that the goals of the marketing plan are being met.

The marketing management process is an ongoing cycle that requires constant attention and adjustment to be successful.

By following this process, businesses can ensure that they are meeting the needs of their customers and achieving their desired results.

Indian economy and evolution

The Indian economy is one of the best performing economies in the world. It has been eight years since India began its journey to reform the economy and implement the most modern economic principles and practices.

Today the future of India is bright and the country is poised for long and sustained economic growth.

Money and its circulation

The most basic function of money is to serve as a medium of exchange, and this function is reflected in the very name of the unit of currency.

Money is used to buy goods and services, and this function is reflected in the concept of purchasing power.

The second function of money is to serve as a store of value, and this function is reflected in the fact that people save money. The third function of money is to serve as a unit of account, and this function is reflected in the fact that prices are generally quoted in terms of money.

Business prototype

A business prototype is a scaled-down version of a proposed business that is used to test various aspects of the business concept. The prototype may be a physical model, a website, or a mock-up of the product or service.

The purpose of a business prototype is to allow entrepreneurs to test their business idea with potential customers or investors to get feedback about the concept before committing significant resources to the venture.

Emerging of E-commerce

E-commerce is the activity of buying or selling products on online services or over the Internet. Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange, inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.

Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web for at least one part of the transaction’s life cycle although it may also use other technologies such as e-mail.

Typical e-commerce transactions include the purchase of online books (such as Amazon) and music purchases (music downloads in the form of MP3 files).

The emergence of e-commerce has created a new economic model and a new way of conducting business. This has led to the development of new business models such as online stores, online auction sites, and online marketplaces.

The growth of e-commerce has also created new opportunities for businesses such as small businesses and home-based businesses.

Taxation and its impact

The tax system in any country is designed to raise revenue to fund the government’s expenditure. The tax burden, or the amount of taxes paid by individuals and businesses, can have a significant impact on the economy.

A high tax burden can discourage investment and consumption, leading to slower economic growth. Conversely, a low tax burden can boost economic activity by leaving more money in the hands of taxpayers.

The impact of taxation on the economy is an important consideration for policymakers when designing tax policy.

WhatsApp has just stepped into the payments sector: How are Indian Companies like Paytm and PhonePe going to survive?

WhatsApp has just announced that it is entering the payments sector in India. This is a big move that is likely to shake up the existing players in the space, like Paytm and PhonePe.

Both of these companies have been investing heavily in building up their payments businesses, and they will now have to contend with a new, well-funded competitor.

It remains to be seen how this will play out, but it is clear that the payments landscape in India is about to get a lot more competitive.

In a broad sense, governments work to control commerce to make their citizens happier and healthier by generating employment and producing useful goods and services.

Today, most businesses conduct their transactions on a massive scale, buying and selling goods and services. A transaction is the selling or acquisition of one item by a consumer. Commerce in an economy refers to all transactions involving that product. The majority of international trade is the exchange of goods between nations.

Importance of Commerce Education

Because it benefits business organizations, commerce is seen as an important subject. However, graduates in the field of commerce lack the necessary abilities. Importance of Commerce.

It is difficult for firms to survive in this cutthroat world due to globalization and technology trends. Due to this, students now place more value on business education.

For future managers to be prepared to meet the difficulties of the dynamic business environment, the school of commerce should play a crucial role in educating them on the newest commercial trends.

Here is the list of Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

1. Monetary incentives to improve employee performance

This is one of the best among the Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas.

The main objective of this Commerce Project topic is:

To recognize the link between financial rewards and worker performance.

Introduction

How to inspire employees to perform better is one of the main issues that most employers, in both the public and commercial sectors, face.

The foundation of economics is the idea that performance is improved by financial incentives. The widespread consensus is that financial incentives have a definite positive impact on employee performance, especially when they are substantial.

Bonuses appear to be determined by an employee’s performance, but since hard effort is intangible, it is not taken into account.

Given that the bonus and allowances are fixed based on a particular performance metric, it can be concluded that monetary incentives are independent of performance.

Additionally, a company’s failure to keep its commitment to pay out bonuses on schedule causes its employees to lose motivation and feel unappreciated.

Monetary Incentives. Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

Description of the Problem

This Commerce Project idea shows that a mix of monetary and non-monetary rewards can inspire employees to excel at their jobs.

Managers are always looking for ways to motivate staff members to go above and beyond the call of duty to accomplish organizational goals. Both monetary and non-monetary incentives are used as workplace motivators.

Financial incentives can vary while still comparably impacting associates. The goal of financial incentives is to financially commend individuals for outstanding work performance.

Accordingly, employees’ preferred financial incentives vary depending on their professional stage and generation.

Need for Incentives

  • The attitude toward ownership is increased by profit sharing, partnerships, ESOPS, etc.
  • Boosts staff engagement
  • Rewards for staff
  • Aids in finding talented people
  • The performance of the organization is improved
  • Reduces attrition
  • Improves employee contentment

To Conclude

This project will also attempt to demonstrate that incentives can be provided in the form of a total pay package or can be non-financial (praising an employee). They are also among the most popular ways to inspire staff.

2. Outsourcing Human Resources in Beverage and Food Firms

The above topic is considered to be the second best among the Top 5 Commerce Project topics & ideas.

The main objective of this Commerce Project Topic is:

To comprehend the effects of outsourcing human resource functions on the efficiency of organizations. This includes investigating potential advantages and determining how they affect worker productivity and mental processes directly.

To increase the quality of their services and products, shorten production cycles, cut costs, increase their focus on core competencies, and generally improve organizational performance, organizations have recently outsourced an expanding range of tasks, including human resource management duties.

Organizations seem to be concentrating on a very small number of tasks, outsourcing the rest to outside vendors. Although outsourcing human resources is popular, there is little proof that it improves performance.

Both the pros and cons of outsourcing as a strategy for gaining a sustainable competitive advantage have been persuasively argued.

On the one hand, firms may be able to better concentrate on their most value-creating operations by outsourcing human resource management chores to specialized groups. This helps in maximizing the potential effectiveness of those activities.

Additionally, expenses may decrease and investments in facilities, equipment, and labor may be scaled back as outsourcing increases.

Outsoucing Human Resources in beverage and food firms. Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

A greater reliance on outsourcing, on the other hand, may result in less innovation, potential competition from outsourcing partners, and a loss of control over the work at hand. Outsourcing’s consequences on performance are so unknown.

Production, distribution, and marketing are all components of the commercial operations of beverage and food companies.

The product is produced by the production division, and it is delivered to retailers and wholesalers like supermarkets, eateries, and coffee shops by the distribution division. The marketing group is also in charge of providing the product to clients in a retail setting.

Because it has the potential to become something that adds value to the current human resource mechanism prominent in contemporary firms, many students choose this as their commerce project topic.

Human resource outsourcing is typically done to bring in more productive employees while also lowering costs for the business. However, neither of these conditions continues to be satisfied throughout time.

It is frequently noted that this causes a disconnect in the workforce, which manifests in their attitudes as they perform assigned responsibilities carelessly. Employee attrition is very high as a result of outsourcing.

This is particularly typical in the food and beverage sectors. Here the time-sensitive nature of business is difficult for human resource specialists.

3. Impact of Outsourcing Material Availability Decision-Making

This is the top third among the Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas to consider.

To identify the criteria utilized in the outsourced decision-making process, as well as formulate an outsourcing strategy.

The availability of materials can be greatly impacted by outsourcing. Companies may experience a lack of specific materials as a result of outsourcing. This may increase costs and result in lower-quality products.

It’s critical to comprehend the implications of outsourcing for material costs when creating a product. The cost of the materials needed to make a product that a company outsources will have an impact on the price of that product.

Depending on how much another company is ready to pay for the same resources, the price of obtaining those materials may likewise alter.

Determinations of material availability impact the supply’s quality and volume. As a result, it also affects customer satisfaction, operational expenses, and productivity. The capacity to control supply chain risk from a single source is further impacted when decision-making about material availability is outsourced.

Therefore, an aspirant can examine the procedure of buying raw materials from vendors at reasonable prices using this commerce project topic.

Outsourcing material availability. Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

Shortages of labor and raw materials have been a significant issue for businesses that outsource. According to research, the majority of businesses in developing nations fail because of waste that causes a shortage of supplies and poorly designed outsourcing processes and decisions.

Low-wage nations like China and India have seen tremendous growth in recent years. This is because of outsourcing goods and services to more advanced Western economies.

However, the internal infrastructures in developing nations are frequently unable to handle such rapid expansion. This leads to the accumulation of garbage.

Even while a company may have excellent designers, lawyers, etc., it may not have the expertise to manage to outsource. They must be able to compare various cost structures and comprehend the strategic risks involved in outsourcing to one partner as opposed to another. A successful outsourcing manager must be able to inspire partners to take the necessary action.

This popular project topic for students studying commerce also examines the advantages of outsourcing material availability, including improved departmental collaboration.

Additionally, outsourcing decisions regarding material availability frees up decision-makers to concentrate on other areas of their business, like marketing and sales.

It enables improved departmental communication. Ensuring that all pertinent information is appropriately conveyed, also helps avoid errors.

4. Role of E-Commerce in Reducing Operational Cost

The fourth best to consider among the Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas.

Doing a comparison analysis to determine how e-commerce contributes to the lowering of functional costs.

E-commerce, as used in business, is the practice of doing transactions electronically amongst several organizations to accomplish a hierarchical or personal objective.

Electronic exchange, also known as the advertisement and buying of labor and goods through the Internet. This is a vital part of the E-Commerce sector.

The Internet, an electronic medium, has the potential to drastically reduce real-time exchange time, processing time, and operating costs. Also facilitates global access to information. E-commerce gained ground by posing a threat to company expenditure costs.

This usual stage has fostered the expansion of E-Commerce through the use of Intranets, Extranets, and the Internet because it has become less crucial to take into account issues like software distribution and setup at this point.

The growth of new businesses that provide information and other knowledge-based intangible commodities to customers throughout the world is also possible. Thanks to e-commerce, which opens up new channels for the international marketing of tangible items.

E-commerce is the term used to describe all interactive business transactions that are made feasible by computer networks.

These changes are essential for both the global economy and the economies of individual countries since e-commerce increases the efficiency of the global economy as a whole.

E-commerece in reducing operational cost. Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

The variety of e-commerce definitions has grown in recent years with the expansion of distributors. Most of the definitions were unambiguous: e-commerce has been defined as the exchange of goods and services through the Internet.

Later, when the term was developed, it was broadened to encompass both the “trade of things” and the “exchange of information.”

E-commerce, when used in the context of business, refers to the procedure of integrating all of an organization’s processes, activities, and services to facilitate the trading of goods and the exchange of information and assets with its partners via computer networks and electronic technologies.

This Commerce project focuses on the advantages of eCommerce in the modern environment. Also evident from the current pandemic is the exponential growth of electronic transactions.

When compared to firms that can operate remotely, a physical office will be much more expensive for an organization to maintain.

These expenses include shipping, office support, salesperson pay, storefront lease, energy, telephone, heating/cooling, taxes, displays, building repairs, and maintenance. On the other hand, the associated expenditures for a virtual office include web hosting fees, shopping cart software, and delivery costs.

5. Reducing Unemployment Through a Co-operative Movement

This is the last one to consider among the Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas.

To start a cooperative movement in a working society and assess how it will affect the people living there. It also assesses several facets of the cooperative movement that help team members.

The bedrock for transforming social and economic issues facing the populace as a whole is cooperation.

The goal of a cooperative society is to address the socioeconomic problems of its members by directly providing goods and services to them in their capacity as either owners-customers or owners-employees of the cooperative enterprise.

Cooperative societies are voluntary and democratic associations of people with variable membership and variable capital.

A cooperative is defined as an organization that is typically incorporated with economic goals, formed by or for individuals or co-ops, with common needs, roughly equal representation in management, roughly equal or proportional capital contributions, and receiving approximately equivalent services and benefits from it.

To advance the welfare of their members, cooperatives get involved in the most concrete undertakings, such as the construction of homes, schools, hospitals, recreation centers, markets, and industries.

In addition to acting as a stopgap for businesses and regional development organizations, cooperatives also work to create community-owned buildings.

Cooperative movement to reduce unemployment. Top 5 Commerce Project Topics & Ideas

The reality is that no nation can succeed in giving its population a decent quality of living. In light of the current situation, it is clear that our only remaining alternative is to adopt the socio-economic model of mutual aid, in which jobless people can voluntarily band together to form cooperative enterprises to accomplish a shared objective.

We are aware that cooperatives serve a variety of functions as an institutional framework for allocating limited resources, promoting economic growth, and improving economic welfare. Offering chances for revenue generation enhances the average income of the population.

There are several explanations provided for this dire employment scenario, some of which include the country’s rapid population expansion, the flow of capital toward the availability of cheap labor, and the effects of new technologies.

We can better comprehend the advantages of a cooperative movement in lowering unemployment thanks to this Commerce project.

According to the analysis’s findings, every organization should implement a cooperative movement because it promotes workers’ progress and well-being in terms of education.

It is advised that cooperative movements be made mandatory for every firm because they promote and encourage current workers to pursue higher education and training to expand their skill sets.

The initiative suggests providing organizations with financial assistance in the form of loans from cooperative banks to aid in the establishment of cooperatives. As a result, creating cooperative banks is seen as being quite advantageous.

The development of a nation’s economy and culture depends on trade, making it one of the most sought-after professions today. You can develop targeted methods to increase conversions and sales if you are an experienced commerce specialist.

Additionally, you may strengthen your connections with manufacturers and improve consumer satisfaction. Retailers and wholesalers, who work directly with customers, are also involved.

Your presentational topics for commerce should combine and have an impact on several facets of life, much as global trade does.

Engage with the importance of commerce whether you use this list of project ideas or additional project themes for commerce students to choose your publishing topic or your 6th sem project concepts.

As a student of commerce, you can offer an analysis of the most basic level of important global events that are inaccessible to the general public.

You can improve your job-relevant skills, which can help you find your dream job, by using the list of commerce project ideas in this post. You are using a valuable commerce ability called decision-making when you choose one of these topics.

Experiential Learning: The Hill Concession Project

Posted in: Feliciano School of Business , Hospitality & Tourism

research project for commerce students

The Hill, a newly renovated concession area at the Yogi Berra Stadium, was part of a capstone project for the Hospitality and Tourism department senior seminar course. The name, the result of market research conducted by Feliciano students, makes the connection between Yogi Berra’s boyhood neighborhood in St. Louis and the elevated Red Hawks perch for the stadium and campus.

Under the guidance of Associate Professor Josh Lupinek (Department of Hospitality and Tourism), students will curate an enticing menu featuring a rotation of local businesses. The inaugural weekend showcased Montclair Brewery and Señor Tacos of Bridgewater, offering students hands-on experiences in community engagement, operations, and promoting partnerships through stadium concessions. This endeavor not only provides valuable practical experience but also strengthens our ties with the local community. We’re excited to see our students thrive in this collaborative and innovative project.

First-Year Students Expand Research Interests through Compendium Project at the MCSC

April 3, 2024

research project for commerce students

Through the MIT Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), first-year students have been working with the MIT Climate & Sustainability Consortium (MCSC) on a compendium project that allows them to explore diverse sustainability topics. The UROP program at the MCSC is an opportunity for undergraduate students to work with postdoctoral impact fellows and representatives from member companies on sustainability-related issues they are passionate about. The flexible model of this program allows students to chose project topics that resonate with their academic studies, interests, and passions. The projects align with the MCSC’s pathways and the students have the opportunity to collaborate with the Impact Fellows leading the work. A compendium, or collection of concise but detailed information about a particular subject, is typically used to summarize a larger body of work in a succinct manner. In this case, at the MCSC, students each contributed to the compendium through a literature review, which resulted in an entry to a larger piece that will be used by researchers at the MCSC in the future. The document features overviews of the topics so that future UROPs and Impact Fellows who are unfamiliar with the topics can learn more.

Students, who worked with the MCSC throughout MIT’s recent Independent Activities Period (IAP) in January, ended up preparing their own entry for the compendium. This consisted of reaching out to MIT Libraries,  as well as completing revisions in collaboration with Impact Fellows and other subject matter experts. They completed their work with a five-minute lightning talk on their topic to MCSC Impact Fellows, staff, MCSC community undergraduate researchers and their supervisors, and other students participating in the compendium project. A few students also got the opportunity to present the outcome of their research at MIT’s 2024 Winter Climate Showcase earlier this month. The MCSC News team caught up with a few of the students who recently completed their projects to learn more about their experience working with the MCSC, main takeaways, and future aspirations.

Green bonds and climate finance

Elise Echarte, a first-year student with an interest in the intersection of finance and sustainability, chose to focus on green bonds for her compendium entry, working with Aneil Tripathy, the MCSC Impact Fellow leading the Climate Finance pathway. Green bonds are debt securities that are used to finance or refinance green projects, and Elise found them particularly interesting because they make up a relatively small and new market. Her goal was to analyze their future potential.

Elise Echarte

Elise Echarte Undergraduate Researcher, MCSC

When she began her work, she was focusing more narrowly on defining green bonds, but as her research continued, she began to expand her research to  include their impact and the pricing differences they exhibited.

“So far, I have been very indecisive when it comes to deciding my major, and my work at MCSC reaffirmed this indecision,” Elise explained. “I have always known I wanted to work in climate and sustainability in some capacity, but working at the MCSC showed me the endless forms that this can take on. Despite doing a lot of work in the climate finance field, Aneil Tripathy’s PhD was in anthropology, and I found this trend of interdisciplinary work at MCSC to be quite common. It encouraged me to continue exploring before committing to a major.”

Although Elise was focused on the climate finance pathway, she had the opportunity to gain exposure to the other work happening throughout the Consortium.

“It was great to mentor Elise on a financial instrument that has been central to my research,” said Aneil. “We were able to cover a range of green bond research topics from definitions to pricing and reporting. Elise was also able to support developing research on green bond use of proceeds at MIT. The IAP compendium format gave her the chance to synthesize these topics and research into a focused writeup on green bonds.”

“The MCSC worked to create a space for undergraduates to feel comfortable asking questions and partaking in conversations,” Elise concluded.“This experience of getting to not only hear postdocs discuss their research, but also being involved myself, was really exciting.”

Evaluating the environmental impact of polymers

Emma Hickman, majoring in Mechanical Engineering, was another undergraduate researcher with the MCSC, and she chose to focus on the differences between synthetic polymers, biopolymers, and recycled polymers in terms of their environmental impact, cost, and availability. Emma worked with Amanda Bischoff , an MCSC Impact Fellow working on the Nature-based solutions pathway. When looking at different papers and life cycle assessments in order to discover these qualities for each polymer type, Emma made sure to embrace the perspectives of three main entities: producers, consumers, and the environment. For example, when looking at the production of synthetic polymers, producers value their cheap production costs, while consumers prioritize high quality over low environmental impact. These trade-offs are very important to highlight when comparing polymer types.

Emma Hickman

Emma Hickman Undergraduate Researcher, MCSC

One realization that Emma had throughout her research period was that there is no such thing as an ideal green polymer.

“When comparing biopolymers and recycled polymers with two of my measured quantities, biopolymers have better biodegradability, but recycled polymers have a lower energy consumption,” she explained. “It is up to the producer and consumer to decide what they want to prioritize in terms of environmental impact, cost, and availability when choosing a polymer type.”

Emma’s research has a lot of real-world implications, which was one of the reasons she chose to focus on polymers.

“This research is very applicable to the modern day because modern consumption of goods is increasing, meaning a correlated increase in textiles and plastics,” she said.“There is a need for a more sustainable alternative to synthetic polymers as synthetic polymers are fossil fuel-based and damaging to the environment. I was drawn to the subject because I took solid state chemistry in the fall and had learned a little bit about materials that can and cannot be recycled in terms of their bond type. I found this really interesting, and when I saw this topic, I wanted to learn more”.

“Mentoring Emma allowed us to explore a topic of interest to myself and MCSC member companies, but which I am not involved in day-to-day in my work,” explained Amanda. “The format of this IAP really gave us the opportunity to learn from other fellows and researchers in the consortium and draw on previous work evaluating recycled polymers. It was really a win-win because Emma got to learn about the research process through exploring a topic that interested her, and she produced a great overview contrasting synthetic polymers, biopolymers, and recycled polymers that will act as a good reference for future projects.”

Solar Eclipse

On eclipse day, hundreds of students will send up balloons for science.

Student volunteers prepare a balloon for a morning launch in Cumberland, Md. On April 8, eclipse day, hundreds of balloons will be launched into the path of the eclipse to study the atmosphere.

CUMBERLAND, Md. — It's a chilly March morning, and Mary Bowden is standing in the parking lot of a local community college.

Bowden is a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland. Nearby, her students are hustling around on a bright blue tarp, rolling out heavy cylinders of compressed gas and fiddling with boxes of electronics.

"This is our final, final dress rehearsal," Bowden says as she surveys the scene.

At the start of next month, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the continental United States. It will begin in Texas and move north through a dozen states before exiting the country through Maine and into Canada.

On eclipse day — April 8 — dozens of student teams across the country will release hundreds of research balloons. The balloons will carry long, dangling strings of scientific instruments into the path of totality, the area on Earth's surface that will see the moon completely block the sun.

The effort, known as the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project , is backed by NASA. It's an opportunity to make unique atmospheric measurements that can only be done during an eclipse, and a chance for students to learn skills they may someday use to launch satellites and astronauts into orbit. Bowden is guiding the University of Maryland team, which is made up of about 30 to 40 students.

"It's just a club," says Daniel Grammer, a junior who will be leading the team on eclipse day. "Everybody here volunteers to do it because they like to do it."

Floating laboratories

Deflated, the balloons look like giant party balloons. As they fill with helium, they begin to take shape — two white, upside-down teardrops bobbing gently in the spring air.

Saimah Siddiqui is a senior and one of the "inflation leads" responsible for filling the balloons.

"Where are we at?" she asks as another student bends over the regulator of the helium tank. Siddiqui seems confident, and with good reason.

"I've done this so many times — this is probably my 30th launch or something," she says.

The scientific goal of this project is to study the atmosphere. As the eclipse shadow travels from south to north across the U.S., it briefly cools the air. Bowden says it's like dragging a swizzle stick through a cup of hot coffee.

"The eclipse itself is kind of stirring up the atmosphere as it traverses across the country," Bowden says. "What we're looking for is the signature, or the effect, of the movement of the shadow."

The results will teach researchers more about how heat moves through the atmosphere. The data could be used to improve predictions of both weather and climate change.

When it comes to making these measurements, there's no better vehicle than a balloon . Unlike a rocket, balloons can drift gently in the eclipse zone for minutes or hours. And they travel at 75,000 to 80,000 feet in altitude, twice the altitude reached by a typical airliner.

Grammer says the view should be amazing.

"Hopefully we'll have livestream video from the balloon in flight," he says. "You'll see the shadow move across the Earth, and it'll be super cool to look at."

Runaway balloons

Things at the test launch appear to be going smoothly, but then, as Siddiqui begins to check her balloon to make sure it's got enough lifting power, it suddenly breaks loose and floats skyward.

Daniel Grammer, a junior, will be the flight director for the solar eclipse launch on April 8. "Everybody here volunteers to do it because they like to do it," he says.

The whole team watches as one of their two balloons drifts slowly away.

Nobody panics. The students put their heads together to figure out what happened. It turns out they forgot to reset a device that is supposed to cut the string at the end of the flight. Normally, this allows the balloon to float away, and the scientific equipment to parachute back to the ground, where it can be recovered.

Instead, the device cut the balloon loose before the payload was even attached.

"I've never seen that happen!" Meredith Embrey says with a laugh. The junior is in charge of tying the scientific equipment to the balloon.

"The good thing is, we didn't lose the payload itself, and we always bring two spare balloons and double the amount of helium we need," Embrey says. "So we will start inflating and do another balloon."

It's a moment to learn from, and that's exactly the point.

"The great thing about the program is that it's really both an education program and a research program," says Angela Des Jardins, a physicist at Montana State University and the principal investigator of the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project.

Across the U.S., over 750 students making up 53 teams are participating in this project. The budding engineers are in charge of everything from scientific instruments to flight direction, weather forecasting, tracking stations, and more.

"We're trying to give these students an opportunity outside the classroom," she says. The eclipse balloons are "a science project that gives them a little bit of a taste of what it would be like in the real world, working in an aerospace job."

Balloons are a perfect prelude to launching rockets, says Bowden. "It's a microcosm of a NASA launch, but cheap and fast — and you can do it again if you fail."

Which is exactly what the team is doing now. With their string-cutting device fixed, they're racing to inflate another balloon. They've got to be quick because the wind is picking up. Siddiqui seems to love it — using engineering to solve problems on the fly, under pressure. She says she hopes to someday have a career launching rockets.

"Maybe like a flight controller/flight operator-type person for my full-time job," she muses as she watches the second balloon fill.

Meanwhile, Embrey and her fellow tie-on specialist Dan Gribok are doing final checks on the scientific instruments. They use red tape to close up the boxes that hold the cameras, measuring devices and transmitters.

"Duct tape is an engineer's best friend, for sure," Grammer jokes as he looks on.

The radio crackles as the flight director, a spirited senior named Kruti Bhingradiya, calls out orders to the team.

"I hope you guys are ready, and if you're not, let me know right now," she says.

The payloads are tied to each balloon. Other students stand around, hands outstretched towards the floating spheres to make sure they don't bang into anything in the final moments before launch.

Bhingradiya calls for the launch area to be cleared of debris. Then she looks around. The team is ready.

"Three ... Two ... One ... Release!" she says.

And the students cheer as they watch their hard work drift off into the clouds.
